A WANGARATTA man alleged to have been speeding and drinking alcohol before a crash which claimed the life of one passenger and severely injured two others has been granted bail. The 23-year-old fronted Benalla Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, successfully applying for bail after

accused’s two surviving male passengers had been airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Sunday night, after the white Jeep came to rest in a paddock off Greta Road around 7.15pm, having allegedly failed to navigate a sweeping right hand turn north of Clarkes Lane in Wangaratta.
The 24-year-old was said to be in a stable condition, while the 16-year-old remained critical after sustaining major head trauma in the crash. The accused faces charges of culpable driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and negligent driving causing
serious injury. A summary of the incident was detailed to the court, alleging the vehicle had skidded while heading north on Greta Road, crossing the oncoming lane and grass shoulder and glancing a tree as it crashed through a nearby wire fence before rolling onto its roof.
According to Detective Leading Senior Constable Sonia Cameron of the Major Collision Investigation Unit, the vehicle “lost control due to what appears to be excessive speed”, with early indications the vehicle could have been travelling at up to 120kph prior to the crash. ■ Continued page 3
