PROUDLY LOCAL WANGARATTA Rovers played host to the Ovens and Murray Football League’s first ever indigenous round at the weekend, welcoming Lavington to the WJ Findlay Oval as the Hawks ran away with a 22-point victory. As part of the celebration of the region’s indigenous peoples, Bpangerang elder Darren ‘Uncle Dozer’ Atkinson conducted a smoking ceremony prior to the first bounce, and treated the crowd to traditional dances alongside the Damu Damu dancers. ago, the Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation Ovens Valley has outlined plans to establish a presence in the rural city before the end of August. An unofficial opening
was held at the 53 Ryley Street premises on Tuesday, when officials and local Bpangerang representatives gathered for a traditional smoking ceremony and showcased the new space, with a range of services set to be made available to the local community in the coming weeks. Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation
Ovens Valley chief executive officer John Martin said the Ryley Street offices would become a one-stop-shop for health, justice and bushfire recovery support for the local indigenous community. “Here it will be an outpost - general linking up, coming in and having a cuppa and being linked
up to all the services we have whether they be here in Wangaratta or from our (Wodonga) office,” he said. “It will be more of a coordination point - a community hub - where we can link up and facilitate wellbeing-type programs for a lot of our community. “We’re looking to have a practice nurse here with a GP in the very near
future, so whilst it’s easier to have that in Wodonga and the surrounding areas, we need our people to receive those services that are culturally appropriate because their health and wellbeing is critical, but we’ve got to have the right clinicians in place that service our people in the right way.” ■ Continued page 3
