No complacency
Fire authorities urge g communityy p preparedness p ahead of expected p shorter fire season IT may be a wet spring, with the forecast of a milder summer, but local fire authorities are urging against complacency around fire preparedness throughout the rural city. Heavy spring rainfall is expected to continue late into the year, as the nation experiences the La Nina weather event for the second time in as many years.

CFA crews were kept largely quiet last summer, as consistent downpours left forested areas damp and at low-risk of igniting, however, significant growth in grassland areas posed
challenges as weather began to fine up in the early new year. CFA Wangaratta Group leader Lachie Gales said crews were expecting similar conditions in the coming months, with a shortened, more-intense season anticipated. “The season is looking like what we might say would be a kinder season for us,” he said.
“We will have a fire season - the demands from a fire season are often linked to its length. “It won’t be like in 2019, where crews were busy from October to March. “It’s likely we’ll see a fire season more like three months than six this time around.” Mr Gales said Wangaratta Group would gather local
brigades for a large-scale training exercise in the coming weeks, although initial plans to stage the demonstration in Boorhaman had been shelved due to the region’s sodden paddocks. He said a revised excercise would be conducted at Wangaratta’s Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre (VEMTC) on Shanley Street, and
would be key to ramping fire brigade activities into the fire season. “One of the challenges is the risk of complacency,” he said. “Soon enough it will be January and things will be dried out. “We need our people to be ready and we need the community to do the work now to manage fuel loads.”
