GUIDE

IT’S been 70 years since Gino Corsini left Italy for Australia at the age of 19, overcoming the challenges of an entirely different language and culture, to eventually establish a home for his family at La Cantina King Valley. Gino reflects on the remarkable milestone, which is being commemorated by his children with a limited release wine. Read his story on page 25. PHOTO: Anita McPherson

Call for court Sport

Local stakeholders want specialist p familyy violence legal g services to meet demand

By RYAN MALCOLM CALLS for a family violence court to be established in the North East are being ramped up by local stakeholders, in an effort to improve outcomes for victim survivors and increase the availability of supports for perpetrators and their victims. A motion recently put to state parliament by

Wangaratta-based MP Tania Maxwell called on the State Government to act on the 227 recommendations handed down by the 2015 Royal Commission into Family Violence, with high rates of domestic violence in rural and regional areas identified as a key issue. Wangaratta, Benalla and Wodonga each have family violence incidence rates well

above the state average (56pc, 92pc and 46pc respectively), compounded by a number of barriers to affordable legal assistance and appropriate facilities in the region. Speaking near Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Monday, Ms Maxwell, Centre Against Violence chief executive Jaime Chubb and Hume Riverina Community Legal Service principal lawyer Alison

Maher said a specialist family violence court would play a key role in improving the availability of supports in the region. “It can start with the facilities like separate entries and exits and waiting rooms - the magistrates have special powers - they can actually order counselling for perpetrators rather than just make an order for a referral to a men’s behaviour change

service,” Ms Maher said. “We just don’t have the resources in our regional courts - in the specialist family violence courts there are applicant workers and respondent workers - in our courts we don’t even have those support services. “I think that in what is already a really stressful and traumatic time, it just aids that recovery - it allows people to have the supports

that they need to actually navigate what is a really tricky court system, and it’s the support afterwards - it’s being supported on that journey.” The nearest specialist family violence court for the North East is Shepparton, an almost two hour journey by car from places such as Wodonga and even longer if utilising public transport. ■ Continued page 3
