Heartfelt boost Pacemaker surgeries g at Wangaratta’s g p public hospital p

THE arrival of a new cardiologist at Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) is allowing regional residents to receive intricate pacemaker surgeries close to home.

Since Dr Bob Gerber commenced work at the hospital earlier this year, eight patients have had pacemakers inserted, rendering travel to Melbourne for the procedure unnecessary.

According to Dr Gerber,

patients have been pleased with the accessibility of the surgery.

“It means they don’t have to travel to a major hospital to have this procedure,” he said.

“For a lot of patients, travel to Melbourne can be a barrier that can prevent them from having a pacemaker inserted.

“We have an excellent theatre and day stay team here at NHW and they have ensured these procedures can be carried out safely.

“It has been a delight to work in a positive culture which has resulted in the procedures being done for our local population.”

Yarrawonga resident Alan Demmery required a pacemaker to be inserted after experiencing a fluctuating heart rate and blood pressure problems, and said he had noticed a considerable uptick in his wellbeing since undergoing treatment at NHW. “I feel a lot more confident

about my health and more able to carry out daily tasks, which I might have avoided in the past,” he said.

“Having the procedure done just 35 minutes away from home meant I could be back home in my own bed by the end of the day.

“Dr Gerber was great at explaining the process to me and that made me more comfortable about the whole thing.”

WILL Moore is in awe after receiving his new van thanks to the generosity of the community and local businesses.

The Wangaratta resident, who has cerebral palsy, has had to find other means to get around since his modified van was taken off the road in July last year after the ramp which gave him and his wheelchair access broke down.

It took nine months of effort

by Will and his supporters but with the help and generosity of the community, he was able to raise over $80,000 to purchase a brand new 2022 Toyota Hiace, with assistance from Benalla Toyota.

While the NDIS would not help with repairing the van due to its age, it did pay for the new van’s modifications to aid Will’s needs.

Will thanked all the local businesses who supported his fundraising efforts including the Wangaratta Lions Club Wangaratta, OAK FM and Wangaratta Chronicle.

“I am very excited and cannot wait to travel to all the places I’ve been waiting for,” he said.

“I’m now saving more than $300 a month in taxi fares which helps with my living costs.

Get Your Move On aims to encourage school-aged children to consider new and unusual ways to get active.

It emerged from Victorian Department of Education and Training research which showed parents often underestimate the amount of physical activity children need, with only 40 per cent of Victorian parents aware that children and teenagers should have 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

The research also showed that Victorian teenagers preferred activities with their friends (58 per cent) over their family (21 per cent), while both parents and teenagers reported the mental and physical benefits of physical activity.

Ninety per cent of Victorian parents said their children experienced better physical health and 87 per cent said they experienced better mental health after being active, while 78 per cent said their children saw better sleep quality, 77 per cent said it improved their confidence, and 73 per cent said it improved their social skills.

A HIATUS is on the cards for the Wangaratta Digital Hub from the end of this month, as it explores future funding possibilities beyond June.

The hub, which has been based in the same Docker Street building as the Wangaratta Library (to the left of the library’s entrance) since 2019, was initially funded as a pilot project by the State Government for three years - a term which is drawing to a close.

Over that time, it has worked to increase levels of digital inclusion in the local community by providing a welcoming space offering affordable access to a range of digital technologies, skill development opportunities and support networks.

While the hub has previously been open between 12pm and 6pm, Tuesday to Thursday, opening hours have been temporarily reduced to Wednesday afternoons, as future funding options for the pilot project beyond the initial State Government provision are discussed.

Current funding will enable these reduced hours to continue until the end of June.

Forward-planning of activities and programs has also been challenging without the certainty of future funding.

However, she said the initiative had still managed to achieve positive outcomes and generate support, goodwill and hope in the community - particularly in helping

locals deal with the technological needs that came with the pandemic.

“We’ve helped hundreds of people, and are still helping them; people who came to us initially for help are coming back for general digital support,” Ms Aldous said.

As a result, she said the wheels were in motion - with assistance from advocates for the service - to attract funding which would allow

the hub to operate beyond June.

“We do have a few balls in the air, but it’s in limbo at the moment,” Ms Aldous said.

“In the meantime, we’re continuing to stay very busy.”

Ms Aldous said the hub was working through avenues to secure funding for a further 12 months, to consolidate the progress it had made during COVID-19 restriction periods.

Speaking in Parliament

yesterday, Wangaratta-based state MP Tania Maxwell (MLC, Northern Victoria) raised the issue of future funding for the service, directing a question to Minister for the Digital Economy Jaala Pulford about whether the State Government would continue to support the digital hub.

She said Ms Pulford visited the digital hub last year, and had seen first-hand the great work it did.

“Digital service delivery will only continue to grow, and the 2020 digital inclusion score for this region is still substantially below the state average. (The hub is) running on saved funds and reduced hours to meet community demand, and their situation is desperate,” she said.

Fellow Wangaratta-based state MP Tim McCurdy (MLA, Ovens Valley) also urged the State Government to consider the funding need, saying he would raise the issue at the next opportunity in Parliament.

Brewers reveal collaborative beer for 2022 AFTER a two year hiatus the annual collaboration between Victoria’s High Country brewers known as Rule 47 has been released for 2022.

Rule 47 showcases Alpine grown hops and also celebrates the trail connecting seven unique breweries across the High Country Brewery Trail.

to support the 2022 collaborative brew launch and entice Melburnians to venture to Victoria’s High Country this winter and indulge in the region’s world class food and drink offering.

This year’s brew of Rule 47 started with a meeting of the minds to decide how to present the distinctive ingredients and flavours of the High Country.

The ‘recipe’ was then brewed by Nathan Munt from King River Brewing in Whitfield, who created a style of the beer know as New World Lager or Pils, as part of a limited edition.

Nathan was recently awarded the Trophy for Best Amber/ Dark Lager at the 2022 Australian International Beer Awards.

LIBERAL Democrats MP for Northern Victoria, Tim Quilty, has urged the Victorian Government to get behind a scheme that frees up emergency services by allowing home visits by paramedics.

Founded last year, the HMS Collective is a group of highly qualified paramedics who provide medical attention for people who don’t need to be taken to hospital.

Modelled after successful schemes in Canada and the UK, the home visits prevent the over-use of ambulances and long wait times at emergency wards.

HMS Collective started in the Macedon Ranges and now has patients in Sunbury, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Melbourne’s north and west where they have reduced ambulance call out times by an average of 90 hours a week.

They provide services for a fraction of the cost of ambulance call-outs and are currently funded by the NDIS, aged care packages or directly by patients.

“It is a no-brainer that the State Government should expand the scheme,” Mr Quilty said.

“It means people get earlier attention in their homes while ambulances and hospitals can focus on emergency cases.

“It also saves both public money and the money of patients who are required to pay more than $1800 in regional Victoria for a ride in an ambulance.

“For the last three years, I have been asking the government why areas such as Indigo Shire have the slowest ambulance response times in the state.

“No adequate answers have been given.

“I asked for the minister to meet with them back in February, and they were ignored.

“Since then, medical services in Victoria are being stretched beyond breaking point.

“I will be pressuring the government to expand the service to Northern Victoria.”

Using funding from the Victorian Government Outdoor Activation Fund 2021, council has set up 12 official busking sites around the CBD in an effort to bring colour, inspiration and excitement back into the streets.

Beth Code and Georgina Stellard are performing their chosen folk songs at around 10am and midday, joining many others busking this Saturday.

Georgina participated in the Battle of the Buskers in a duet with Viveka Pizzini-Smith, and they were asked to come back for the free busking by council’s events team leader, Kelly Timms.

A NORTH East bus provider has raised doubts over the Victorian Government’s transition to zero emissions buses, suggesting the move isn’t on schedule and may not work for regional routes.

The Victorian Government has pledged that all new bus purchases will be zero emission buses (ZEBs) from 2025, but Brock Fallon, owner of Fallons Bus Service, said he doubts the State Government will be able to make the transition on time due to a lack of infrastructure.

“I’m not sure that that’s going to be achievable in regional and especially rural areas because you’ve got to have the infrastructure to charge batteries or fuel hydrogen cell vehicles,” he said.

“We’ve got two and a half years - I don’t see it happening.”

Fallon’s Bus Service is required to start purchasing ZEBs from 2025 under Victorian government contracts, which allow it to run school bus and route services.

“I welcome it for sure, especially for those buses we run around town all day,” Mr Fallon said.

“But achievable by 2025,

I’m not sure that that’s going to be achievable in regional and especially rural areas because you’ve got to have the infrastructure to charge batteries or fuel hydrogen cell vehicles.”

Mr Fallon also raised concerns over the cost of ZEBs. “We’re buying school buses at the moment and buses that go around town, the low floors which we run in Wang,” he said.

“To go to electric is double the price.”

Fallon’s Bus Service runs buses across North East Victoria, including Wangaratta, Benalla, Beechworth and Mt Beauty.

The Victorian Government is currently undergoing a $20 million ZEB trial to understand the network and infrastructure requirements

for the ZEB transition.

As part of the trial the government announced last week that two hydrogen fuel cell buses and nine electric buses are planned to run in West Melbourne from March next year.

“The Zero Emissions Bus Trial will analyse hydrogen

and electric buses on existing routes, providing confidence to the government and bus operators of the best path to transition to a diesel-free bus fleet,” a Department of Transport spokesperson said.

“Whether the future of zero emissions buses in regional Victoria is hydrogen-

fuelled, electric batteryoperated or a combination of both will be informed by the learnings of our industry-based trials underway across the state.

“Our regional Victorian bus network makes up more than half the state’s bus fleet and will play a pivotal role in the Victorian Government’s transition to net zero emissions by 2050.”

According to the Department of Transport, Victoria’s transport sector accounts for about 20 per cent of total state emissions, and these emissions are growing at the fastest rate of all sectors due to increases in population and associated economic activity.

Roy Dyson, regional operations manager in Victoria and NSW for bus provider Dyson, said his company was fully committed to the ZEB transition and are working with the Victorian Department of Transport.

According to Mr Dyson, the company will be trialling an electric bus in Wodonga in July.

Mr Dyson predicted the company will have ZEBs in their fleet in 12-24 months, and suggested that Victoria’s bus fleet will be a mixture of electric and hydrogen buses.

“Electric doesn’t have the range,” he said.

“They’re more suited to urban route buses.”

Plastic bag phase out for council THE Rural City of Wangaratta is phasing out its use of single-use plastic bags in an effort to reduce its plastic footprint.

Council announced its 12-month Engaging in Plastic-free Innovation for Change (EPIC) business program on Wednesday, to coincide with World Oceans Day. “As an organisation, Rural City of Wangaratta is committed to take a lead on changing behaviours to ensure the future health of our environment,” council chief executive officer, Brendan McGrath, said.

“Council recognises the importance of healthy waterways and this is highlighted in our Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2021-2026.

“Reducing single-use plastics is in line with global concern about the impact plastic pollution has on our waterways and marine environment.

“While Wangaratta might be a long way from the coast, ultimately our rivers flow into the Murray, which

The program will be delivered by the Plastic Oceans Australasia (POA), an environmental non-forprofit organisation that

works throughout Australasia to change society’s perception that this indestructible substance can be treated as ‘disposable’.

POA will assist council staff to conduct surveys to measure plastic waste, deliver behaviour change workshops to council staff,

and advise on alternatives to single use plastics that deliver benefits to council’s bottom line.

Executive director Ricki Hersburgh said now more than ever we truly need to be responsible to change our habits to reduce single-use plastics from our workplaces, homes, and communities.

“POA is delighted to support the Rural City of Wangaratta and its staff on their journey to achieving this in 2022 and beyond,” she said.

“If businesses and communities are serious about reducing the impact of plastic on our waterways and marine environments, then they need to start looking at how much plastic they use and begin to find alternatives.

“The EPIC program provides step-by-step instructions and actions to be able to make a real difference.”

The EPIC Program equips councils and businesses with the knowledge and skills to drive public awareness about the global plastic problem.

ONLY 25 minutes of exercise can significantly reduce the chance of having a stroke, according to a new study by South Australian researchers and San Diego State University.

The research found that people who spend 13 or more hours a day sedentary or sitting down exhibited a 44 per cent increase in risk of stroke compared to those who are more active.

It also revealed that 25 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity significantly decreased the stroke risk, in some instances by 43 per cent.

Light physical activity was also associated with reducing stroke risk.

Stroke Foundation South Australia state manager Luke Hays said all Australians, regardless of their age, should prioritise physical activity.

“Being active daily, whether it’s walking the dog or going for a swim, goes a long way in reducing the likelihood of having a stroke because it reduces those key risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.”

The 77-year old started playing lifeball after being a keen squash and racquetball player.

“I saw it advertised in the senior’s magazine and I thought, ‘well, I’m not active enough to play racquetball any more’,” she said.

“So I went down and saw it and I said, ‘this is for me’.

“It’s active but in a gentle way.”

According to Lifeball Australia, the game is particularly suited to older adults as it improves heart and lung function, increases circulation and relieves stiffness.

It helps prevent fall injuries as it improves balance, coordination, flexibility, mobility, and mental stimulation.

The Wangaratta club play for an hour on Tuesday afternoons at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre.

“Anything to get you up and moving instead of just sitting at home alone,” Ms Broadway said.

Police urge alpine caution

LOCAL police have called for caution on the region’s roads, following major alpine snow dumps to mark the beginning of winter.

Almost 100cm of snow has fallen at Mount Hotham and Falls Creek resorts in the last week, leading police anticipating an influx of metropolitan and regional motorists to the North East to take to the slopes over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

According to Wangaratta Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Colin Provan, regional police will be out in force along major thoroughfares throughout the weekend, in an effort to minimise instances of road trauma in dangerous driving conditions.

“The Queen’s Birthday weekend ordinarily coincides with the opening of snow season - we’ve had amazing snowfall in the last week,” he said.

“We can anticipate a high volume of traffic flow towards Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, so police will be focusing on major arterial roads in alpine areas.

“Travelling on alpine roads presents challenges,

All motorists travelling to the alpine resorts will be expected to carry snow chains in their vehicle and be able to fit them when directed.

The state’s road toll has risen by 18 per cent on last

year’s numbers, with 105 motorists having lost their lives so far in 2022.

Some 63 fatalities have occurred on regional roads, compared to 46 last year.

Rural City of Wangaratta has recorded two fatalities, while 19 people have died on roadways in the Hume

region since the beginning of the year.

Snr Sgt Provan said simple measures could be taken throughout the alpine regions to minimise the risk of a fatal incident.

“We’re encouraging holidaymakers to check the weather conditions along

the route to their destination,” he said.

“In wet conditions, it’s important drivers allow extra distance between themselves and the vehicle in front - in areas where the roads are icy or have snow, such as on Mt Hotham or Falls Creek, this is vital.

Operation Regal will run through to 11:59 on Monday evening, with police aiming to intercept motorists undertaking risk-taking behaviour in unforgiving driving conditions throughout the weekend.

Transport Accident Commission chief executive officer Joe Calafiore said authorities were endeavouring to draw a line in the sand following a “deeply concerning” start to the year.

“Day after day at the TAC we see the devastating impacts of road trauma on our clients, their families, and loved ones of people who have lost their lives - and it could happen to any of us,” he said.

“We will continue to do everything we can to make our roads safe, whether that’s campaigns and education, supporting enforcement efforts or investing in road safety infrastructure, but we need all Victorians to play a part.

“We are urging Victorians to drive safely for everyone this long weekend - by slowing down, buckling up, putting our phones away and separating drinking from driving, we can all help make our roads safe.”

Expanded capacity a healthy sign WANGARATTA continues to expand its medical support capacities in a major boon for the local community.

Procedures and surgeries which not so long ago would require an arduous journey to a metropolitan hospital are becoming increasingly accessible in the rural city, allowing local residents more complete immediate care than ever before.

With the recent addition of a cardiologist to NHW‘s surgical team, local patients will be able to receive vital heart care while remaining close to home.

Hospitals have faced unprecedented workloads over the last two years, and as they further expand their treatment capacity in the coming years, the hospitals are naturally going to need to expand their staffing capacity.

Already in 2022, Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) have benefited from a $300k grant to purchase a state–of–the art ultrasound machine and specialist biopsy equipment to support safer prostate cancer treatment, which had previously only been available in Wodonga.

Wangaratta Private Hospital‘s elective surgery capacity was also strengthened earlier this year through the addition of a Mako Stryker robot, which provides surgeons greater precision when undertaking knee and hip replacements.

Going to hospital is often a stressful time for any patient but, by providing care locally regional hospitals can alleviate the additional panic a lengthy journey to an unfamiliar part of the state could potentially create.

The opportunity to expand local healthcare infrastructure is one that needs to be grasped with both hands, to ensure vital support can be provided to North East residents who need it most.

Keep an eye out for local scammers PHONE calls from scammers appears to be accepted as a regular minor inconveniences, which in some cases turns into a financial disaster for the vulnerable in our society including the elderly, lonely and disenfranchised.

What is more disturbing than the phone calls are some of the people who actually live in this city masquerading to be model citizens who in fact are miserable, greedy, money hungry opportunists preying on the unsuspecting victims offering friendship as a means which enables them to further their quest for wealth.

There is no doubt many people reading this letter would be familiar with this scenario of falsifying friendship, particularly with elderly, infirm and vulnerable people for no other reason than personal gain.

One can write at length with many examples of fraud, theft by deception, misappropriation of funds and various disgusting misdeeds committed by some people in our community.

My suggestion to ensure we have a safe environment for those most vulnerable is to be mindful of any changes to their normal routine and other factors that ring alarm bells to family, mutual friends and neighbours to investigate.

More support for veterans’ families VETERANS’ families and carers will be supported by a new program run by Melbourne Legacy and backed by the State Government, as the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide continues its investigations.

Victorian Veteran Family Services, in which the State Government has invested $500,000, will offer individualised support to the families and carers of veterans.

The VVFS will provide extended eligibility and referral pathways for families and loved ones of veterans, complementing existing support programs already available to the veteran community.

Families and carers of veterans can also reach out for extra wellbeing support through a new phone number, 1800 VET FAM, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Funding boost will help with our waste disposal A $4m funding boost for the state’s ‘Detox Your Home’ program in this year’s state budget will see Wangaratta host a free pop-up waste disposal event later this year.

Wangaratta Transfer Station continues to host one of only 30 permanent collection sites across the state which accepts household batteries, fluorescent lights, paint and motor oil on a daily basis.

Under normal operation, the Wangaratta Transfer Station has disposed of almost 50,000kg of paint since February 2020.

However, a special ‘Detox Your Home’ event is currently in the works for the second half of the year, which would facilitate the disposal of household chemicals and dangerous goods during a free one-day event run by local council.

Expert chemists are on hand at every event to identify and sort chemicals, which are then transported to a dedicated facility where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal.

According to Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, up to 40 events across the state throughout the year will ensure chemicals are not left to damage the environment.

Victorians on average bring a 23kg of waste for disposal, with two thirds of attendees reporting they’ve had their toxic materials for over five years.

The most commonly collected chemicals include petrol, kerosene, turpentine, cooking oils, methylated spirits, pesticides and herbicides.

Winter prompts smoke alarm check, for safety

LOCAL fire agencies are urging community members to install smoke alarms in bedrooms, living areas and hallways, where some 72 per cent of fatal house fires begin.

With the local region well and truly in the thick of winter weather, fire officials have called for community members to check the working order of their smoke alarms before cranking their wood fire or heating utilities within the home.

While state laws require a smoke alarm to be installed outside sleeping areas on each storey of a household, fire officials have long advocated for homeowners to install interconnected systems in each bedroom and living area of a home, allowing no fire to go unnoticed by occupants.

According to Wangaratta-based CFA District 23 acting assistant chief fire officer Rod Railton, smoke alarms are a relatively cheap way of ensuring the safety of homeowners in the event of a house fire.

“It’s important that smoke alarms are interconnected and in bedrooms,” he said.

“There have been some studies that show people in a bedroom with the door closed often can’t hear a smoke alarm in a hallway.

“A $20 smoke alarm could save your life.”

CFA acting chief officer Garry Cook said fires became increasingly fatal during night-time hours, when residents are left unable to smell their surroundings.

“People lose their sense of smell when they are sleeping, and the carbon monoxide in smoke will put

you into a deeper sleep,” he said.

“Without a working smoke alarm in bedrooms and living areas, you may not wake up.”

Smoke alarms are purchasable with a 10-year lithium battery, however, existing alarms using replaceable or rechargeable batteries should be changed annually.

Mr Railton urged homeowners to

develop a routine which would allow them to regularly check the function of their home’s smoke alarms.

“You can check your clock and then check your smoke alarm batteries,” he said.

“You should test your smoke alarms regularly - at least once a month.

“There’s not much point having a smoke alarm if it doesn’t work.”

Bonus $3000 payments for health staff

VICTORIAN nurses, midwives, doctors and paramedics will be handed $3000 in bonus payments to attract and retain them in the state’s strained health system.

All staff working in public hospitals and ambulance services will be offered the cash and free meals as the sector braces for a busy winter plagued by more COVID-19 and flu cases.

To be eligible, workers must be employed in the state’s public health service by July 1 and still be employed on September 30.

The first $1500 payment will be made on August 15 and the second at the end of September, as part of the $353 million package from the Victorian government.

“This is all about encouraging people to take up shifts if they can, to go from being part-time to maybe working some further hours,” Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters on Thursday.

“It’s also about bringing people back into the system.

“It’s also a fundamental acknowledgement of the extreme pressure, the really sig-

nificant challenge that there is in our health system at the moment.”

Former Royal Australasian College of Physicians president John Wilson recently raised worker burnout and falling care standards as major problems confronting the health sector.

Thousands of Victorian staff in both clinical and nonclinical roles will be provided the bonus payments, including those working in cleaning, food services and laundry services.

nurse unit manager Susan Harding said healthcare workers endured “dark days” over the COVID-19 pandemic and the cash was recognition of their hard work and stress.

“Every staff member that we work with ... they go home to a family,” she said.

“It was really confronting hoping we were making good decisions to get them home safely at the end of the day while we were watching mass graves being dug overseas.”

Workers in Victoria’s private health system won’t get the extra cash.

Lisa Fitzpatrick, Victorian branch secretary of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, said the union would write to private acute care providers to push for a separate payment for those workers.

“It’s time that the private acute care employers stepped up and recognised their amazing staff in the way that the state government has done,” she said.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the $3000 payments were a good move and well deserved.

Otherwise healthy children who have received two vaccine doses are still considered to be well protected against severe disease.

OECD warns of lurking upside inflation risk THE Reserve Bank of Australia may need to hike interest rates more aggressively to contain inflation, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has warned.

Australia’s central bank has so far raised the cash rate by a total 75 basis points at its past two monthly board meetings, taking it to 0.85 per cent.

In its latest Economic Outlook released on Wednesday - but finalised before this week’s RBA board meeting - the OECD said it expected the cash

rate to reach 2.5 per cent by the end of 2023.

But it warned strong global inflationary pressures and a tight labour market pose further upside risk to inflation in Australia. “(This) could lead the Reserve Bank of Australia to tighten monetary policy more aggressively, with potential negative implications for consumption, investment and economic growth more generally,” the OECD said.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the report is an important contribution

to the understanding of the substantial challenges facing the economy.

“High and rising inflation, rising interest rates and falling real wages all have consequences for our economy at a time of serious international uncertainty as well,” Dr Chalmers told AAP. All of Australia’s big four banks - ANZ, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank and Westpac - have passed-on the 50 basispoint RBA rate hike to their variable rate mortgage customers in full.

Training to help community safely talk about suicide and prevention MINDFRAME training will be available to locals next month, aiming to equip the community and local organisations with the skills to safely communicate about suicide and suicide prevention.

The online training will be delivered locally through a partnership between the Wangaratta Grit and Resilience Program and Everymind, a leading national institute dedicated to reducing mental ill-health, reducing

suicide and improving wellbeing.

The Grit and Resilience Program is a four-year initiative, supported by Federal Government funding, which is taking a community-driven approach to building and sustaining grit and resilience in the Rural City of Wangaratta.

The way suicide and mental ill-health are reported, portrayed, or communicated can impact the way vulnerable people access help-seek-

ing information and services.

Mindframe provides evidence-based knowledge and context surrounding safe and

responsible ways to communicate about suicide or suicide prevention.

Two online training sessions will be delivered this July for the Rural City of Wangaratta.

The first session, on Tuesday, July 5 from 9.30am to 12.30pm, will be for organisations, communications teams and local media, with a focus on upskilling key spokespeople and those in media and communication roles to pro-

vide safe comment and reporting.

The second session on Wednesday, July 6 from 5.30pm to 7pm, will be open for all community members and will provide an in-depth look at the Mindframe guidelines, and safe and responsible ways to communicate, including about personal experience, help-seeking and self-care.

Keeping bikes bush-safe

By RYAN MALCOLM A CRASH course in motorcycle safety is set to provide inexperienced dirt bikers with the opportunity to hone their skills during an overnight escape to Mulwala later this month.

Provisioned by RoadSafe North East (RSNE), the two day outdoor seminar will allow riders new to ‘going bush’ to practice vital skills in the company of experienced riders, with special emphasis on appropriate bike set up and emergency

management when riding in groups.

Held on a private property in Mulwala, attendees will absorb two hours of practical information around appropriate paper mapping, understanding emergency procedures and riding skills before camping overnight.

Riders will then be given an opportunity to ride on a private track in the company of other attendees, managing real obstacles and further developing their skills.

The session will also cover

laws while riding in the bush.

According to RSNE spokesperson John Weinert, the program had undergone significant change since it was last run prior to the pandemic.

“We haven’t done it for two years,” he said.

“We used to try and cram it into one full day but now it is spread over two - there’s a lot more practical riding this time around.

“Our target audience is inexperienced riders who are young, but you find even experienced riders don’t

necessarily know how to set their bike up.

“It’s about setting the bike up and setting the person up to ride in the bush - it’s all the preparation work.”

Tickets for the June 25 weekend are available for $100, and include training and food.

Attendees are urged to organise their own accommodation, however, free camping is available on-site, with secure storage for motorcycles.

L2P celebrates decade of support, with 250 graduates MORE than 250 local learner drivers have secured their probationary licences with the help of North East Support and Action for Youth’s (NESAY) TAC L2P, which celebrated its 10th birthday on Tuesday after a slew of COVID delays.

Initially commencing in 2011, the local initiative has seen some 266 local drivers between the ages of 16 and 21 benefit from almost 8900 hours of supervised driving practise with volunteer mentors, with approximately 134 going on to pass their driving test.

According to long-time local mentor Merrilyn Dews, the decision to volunteer her vehicle and her time to support a young driver had inherently improved her own driving.

“I joined the program because I felt it would make a real difference in the participants’ lives,” she said.

Hundreds competed at 2022 Wangaratta Festival of Dance YOUNG dancers from across the region and beyond took centre stage at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre this year for the 2022 Wangaratta Festival of Dance.

Hundreds of competitors enjoyed five days of competition in over 12 genres of dance styles.

Joining the North East Victorian contingent were dancers from as far away as Griffith, Melbourne and Warragul, competing in junior, senior or troupe sections of the event.

Cathy Nesbitt from Wangaratta Festival of Dance said there were also three school troupes entered this year which is something they would like to see more of in the years to come.

“The committee was delighted to see so many entries to the event and we loved that people are willing to travel such distances,” she said.

“After the disruptions we’ve had over the last couple of years it was great to see people who were able to come up for the event from metropolitan Melbourne.”

Another highlight of this year’s event was the Wangaratta Festival of Dance Cup - now in its second year which comes with $250 prize money for both the junior and senior winners.

The committee introduced the cup to encourage dancers to step outside their comfort zones, with eligibility requiring dancers taking part to enter both an ‘improvisation’ and ‘own

choreography’ section - both of which have no teacher assistance.

They are then required to perform one unseen dance in the Wangaratta Festival of Dance Cup. This year the Junior Cup was awarded to Dakota Denyer (DanzWorx) with second place to Macy Cartwright (Le Beat Dance Academy) and third place to Scarlet Maloney (MT Dance Creative).

The Senior Cup was awarded to Ainslea Esplana (Janolo Classical Coaching) and second place to Learna Torresan (Jodi’s Dance Company).

Cathy Nesbitt said the Cup is something they hope to see grow over the years and they will be encouraging more dancers to enter next year.

The next event for the Wangaratta Festival of Dance committee is the mini competition to be held later this year with details soon to be released.

Mountains of snow to enjoy MORE lifts will be rolling, and more terrain open this weekend at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek alpine resorts, as they prepare to welcome thousands of visitors to celebrate arguably their best Queen’s Birthday weekend in more than 20 years.

Snowfalls throughout this week have already taken both resorts’ snow depth to around one metre, and more snow and below freezing temperatures are forecast today, tomorrow and Sunday, with Monday expected to have clearing skies.

Close bond forged by unusual schooling year

By SIMONE KERWIN SCHOOL reunions can often be a catch-up of many years, but for a group of former Wangaratta High School students, regular gatherings since their school days have ensured they’ve stayed remarkably close.

Members of the class of 1954, which began its secondary education on the site of the newly-constructed Yarrunga Primary School before completion of the new Edwards Street high school, have built a unique bond which most recently saw them gather in Wangaratta last week for a combined 80th birthday celebration.

“Some are 81, some are 79, but we thought we’d all get together to celebrate 80 together,” former student Lyn Canning said.

As happens when longtime friends get together, the stories and laughs flowed freely during the luncheon at the Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway.

The group reminisced about hiding in cupboards on the newly-opened six-room White Street site to avoid classes; the need to take drinking water to school as plumbing wasn’t completed until term two; wandering around mounds of yellow clay, as landscaping was still to be finished and there was little seating in the yard; and country students’ recollections of boarding at the hostel located across the road from the original Chisholm Street high school, overseen by the then-Church of England.

Regardless of any obstacles, the former students remember school as being great fun

for the 150 young people based in White Street, and many believe it moulded their resilience and tested their common sense, as they found their way without the guidance of senior students.

The spectacular Black Kite

EVER WATCHFUL, EVER HUNGRY: A Black Kite perched on the end of a branch.

BLACK Kites are spectacular birds, soaring effortlessly in the wind, their long-forked tails constantly twisting to manoeuvre the bird while searching for food on the ground below, or skillfully catching insects on the wing.

A medium-sized raptor, from a distance the Black Kite appears almost black, with a light brown bar on the shoulder.

The plumage is actually dark brown, with scattered light brown and rufous markings, particularly on the head, neck and underparts.

The tail is forked and barred with darker brown.

This feature gives the bird its other name of Fork-tailed Kite.

The eyes are dark brown and the bill is black with a yellow cere (area of skin around the nostrils).

Both sexes are similar.

Young Black Kites are generally lighter in colour than the adults and have a comparatively shallower forked tail.

The range of the black kite covers much of the Australian mainland, as well

as Africa, Asia and Europe.

The Black Kite is arguably the most numerous species of raptor in the world.

They are found in a variety of habitats, from timbered watercourses to open lightly timbered agricultural land, but generally not dense forest.

Locally, it is normally seen in small groups, rather than the huge flocks of many thousands of birds that form during grasshopper plagues further north.

Their numbers vary in our region between a few scattered groups to many in those years following very good breeding conditions in inland and northern Australia.

The Black Kite prey on lizards, small mammals, insects and especially grasshoppers.

They are also scavengers and frequent tips on the outskirts of towns.

They are readily attracted to fire and are often seen wheeling about in the smoke above stubble burning in croplands in autumn, where

they search ahead of the firefront and eagerly pounce on small animals as these flee the flames or picking up the burnt remains of those that did not escape.

Both live and dead (carrion) prey are eaten.

Black Kites have been recorded in northern Australia holding burning sticks from a burnt area and flying a distance to drop them on unburnt ground, presumably to increase the availability of fleeing prey.

Black Kites nest in isolated pairs or in small, scattered colonies.

As with other raptors, a ritualised aerial courtship display is performed by both sexes.

This involves loud calling, grappling of feet (talons), and tumbling or cartwheeling.

The nest is a bulky cup of sticks, lined with softer material, and is placed in the fork of a tree branch.

The female incubates the eggs while the male provides food.

Black Kites are best observed in the warmer months, identified by their forked tails, soaring above large wetland areas of farmland north of Wangaratta.

In come the deer, up go the fences

WANDILIGONG orchardist Don Nightingale began putting in fencing for sambar deer around six years ago, and he hasn't stopped since, most recently putting in fencing for a chestnut plantation.

The Nightingale Bros fruit producers have put in the 1.8 metre tall deer fencing at their properties in Wandiligong, Buckland and Stanley to protect new fruit and nut trees.

It costs nearly $1000 a metre.

“Now we’ve got the burden of the cost, and deer fence is very expensive,” Mr Nightingale said.

Like Mr Nightingale, many Alpine businesses have taken the feral deer issue into their own hands over the past five years, spending big to stop the pests’ indis-

criminate grazing.

John Atkins, part owner of an accommodation business in Harrietville, erected a 2km electric fence to stop deer entering their property.

“If we hadn’t the garden would have been destroyed,” he said.

According to Mr Atkins, it cost around $3000 just for the materials.

One of his major concerns is the deer’s environmental impact, suggesting that they are destroying the Alpine region’s native vegetation and ferns, but he also said the deer’s increasing numbers will impact people’s quality of life.

“Every indication is that deer numbers are doubling every three to four years,” he said.

Buckland Valley cattle farmer Craig Hore upgraded around five to six kilometres of fencing on his 40 hectare property, including installing a new electric fence energiser, to stop deer grazing on his property and destroying his fences.

He used to be able to see a herd of deer from his back porch when he would shine

a torch into the night.

“They’d run straightaway,” he said.

“You’d hear the fences go twang as they charged through them.”

But according to Mr Hore, since hunters moved in deer numbers have shrunk, and he knew of one hunter in the Buckland Valley who shoots 300 to 400 deer a year, and another

Germantown-based hunter who works commercially.

He also said the Victorian Government’s deer culling program had made a noticeable difference.

Parks Victoria has been conducting ground and aerial shooting in both the Alpine and Buffalo National Parks between October 2021 and June 2022, following the government's $18.25

million investment over four years and $4.4 million per year ongoing investment on deer control.

But back in Wandiligong, Mr Nightingale said nothing has been done to stop the big sambar deer.

“They’re walking down the main street in Wandi,” he said.

“Most nights you hear them honking.”

Women are honing their woodwork skills at Bright Men’s Shed

By MARTIN DAVIS MANY people know the men’s shed is for men who want to go and build anything from tables to benches and has been great for men’s mental health, but what about the ladies who enjoy construction and building?

In conjunction with Bright United Men’s Shed (BUMS), a new group of ladies through U3A Bright District has joined to create the BULS to help get more women into woodworking.

After conversations with BUMS president Kevin Hancock, Jessica Short started up the BULS with more than

50 women who come and work on various DIY projects.

“I love being creative and I haven’t got into wood working since school so I wanted to know if there was anywhere I could go in Bright after recently purchasing a house and wanting to do some DIY,” Ms Short said.

“I found the men’s shed and talked to Kevin who was quite supportive of the idea, so we started a Facebook group which has 120 ladies on it.

“We have inducted 55 ladies who bring their own projects and it is able to give people something unique to do rather than the normal sport which Bright is known for.”

Ms Short said Kevin’s outlook on getting women involved has been huge for BULS. “When we did first come in there was a bit of ‘what are you doing here?’ but throughout time, some of the guys have come in and watched us use the tools, and we aren’t too bad,” she said.

The BULS are now are part of the shed each Thursday from 5:30pm, with new people being inducted at the start of every month.

ALPINE Shire’s rental crisis is being caused by a perfect storm of holiday letting, remote workers and high property prices, according to local real estate agents.

Kay Alexander, director and property manager at Alexander’s First National Real Estate in Bright, said the rental shortage was going through the worst period she had seen in nearly 30 years in the business.

■ WITHIN REACH: MG HS +EV (nee PHEV) is the Chinese carmaker’s first plug-In hybrid.

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY THE ongoing growth in Australian sales of MG vehicles continues to gather pace with the Chinese importer now sitting in seventh place of 2022 yearto-date sales at the end of April.

The company’s success is all the more impressive given that there are only three models in its range, the MG3 hatchback, ZS small SUV and HS midsized SUV. The two SUVs are offered with different levels of electrification, the ZS is fully electric while the HS is a plug-in hybrid. Both come with the choice of Excite and Essence equipment levels.

The subject of this week’s review is the HS plug-in, originally branded, logically, as the HS PHEV but subsequently renamed, probably at the behest of the company’s marketing branch, as the HS +EV. We were in the higher-specced Essence variant.

STYLING MG HS +EV is a neat and stylish vehicle without anything to make it stand out from the SUV crowd.

The front is dominated by a large honeycomb grille with the familiar ‘MG’ badge at front-and-centre.

INTERIOR Rear legroom is acceptable and there’s plenty of

headroom despite the Essence’s panoramic sunroof.

Excite comes with polyurethane/PVC seats while the Essence steps up to two-tone leather front sports seats with power adjustment and heating as well as LED ambient lighting.

The battery charging cable is stored below the boot floor meaning that there’s no room for a spare wheel, instead you’ll need to rely upon the supplied tyre repair kit if you get a puncture, a growing risk in pot-hole riddled Eastern Australia.

POWERTRAIN MG HS +EV combines a 1.5-litre 119 kW / 250 Nm turbo-petrol engine with a battery providing 90kW / 230 Nm to the electric motor for a combined output of 189 kW and 370 Nm. All-wheel drive is available in the petrol-only HS but, at this stage, the +EV is front-wheel drive only.

INFOTAINMENT Inside there are two large screens, a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster with built-in satellite navigation and a 10.1-inch multi-function high-definition infotainment colour touch screen with large user-friendly displays.

DRIVING As is the norm with hybrids, the HS +EV moves off under battery power

with the engine kicking in at around 30 kph or earlier under hard acceleration.

Tapping the ‘EV’ button on the centre console ensures that the engine doesn’t activate while ever there is charge in the battery.

Factory tested fuel consumption figures had us scratching our heads with the city cycle showing 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres and the combined city/highway cycle just 1.7 L/100 km.

That latter figure is dependent upon the battery being fully charged to start with and supplying the first 63 kilometres of the hypothetical 100-km trip with zero fuel being used and the remaining 37 km, under hybrid mode, using the 1.7 litres.

To extend that 1.7 L/100 km beyond that 100 km would require the battery to be fully re-charged before proceeding.

We tested the fuel consumption with no charge in the battery and averaged 6.9 L/100km on our predominantly motorway drive from Gosford to Sydney helped along by the usual brake regeneration feature of most hybrid.

These issues aside we found the plug-in MG to be a very impressive vehicle.

The instant torque and silent running of EVs contribute to a very enjoyable driving experience.

Testing in EV mode with the battery fully charged,

and driving conservatively over flat roads, we were able to just about match the claimed range of 63 kilometres.

Performance is capable but unexciting as is the norm with vehicles in the SUV segment. Steering is a little heavy but responsive enough.

Unlike other EVs the amount of brake regeneration when decelerating cannot be adjusted but we found that the level was just right, effective without being too intrusive.

The twin information screens are easy to read and operate although, as is becoming increasingly common, too many of the most-used features needed screen taps rather than being physical knobs.

While we appreciate that the lane-correction safety feature can assist lazy and inattentive drivers, like almost everyone that we’ve talked to, we turn it off at the earliest opportunity.

In the HS +EV it’s simply a

matter of giving two taps on a button at the end of turn indicator on the steering wheel stalk.

AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE HS 1.5 CORE 2WD:

SUMMING UP The MG HS +EV competes against the wellestablished Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the just-realised Ford Escape PHEV in the mid-sized SUV segment.

With driveaway prices starting at $46,990 it’s the cheapest of the three and comes with the longest (seven-year) warranty.

Whether the extra $10k for the +EV over its petrolonly HS equivalents can be justified will depend on buyer’s individual circumstances.

For urban buyers with short distance commutes and a home wallbox it would make sense.

Importantly, with long waiting times for most of its competitors, buyers can get into most MG models within weeks rather than waiting many months or even years.

Blues’ McKay to make surprise return

CARLTON have received a rare dose of good news on the injury front after spearhead Harry McKay was given the green light to return for Friday night’s clash with Essendon at the MCG. McKay was initially set to miss around six weeks after undergoing knee surgery to repair the lateral meniscus he tore during the roundeight win over Adelaide.

But the 24-year has made a quicker than expected recovery and will be a sur-

prise inclusion against the Bombers.

“He’s been fairly uninterrupted with his preparation. He’s an absolute pro so that’s given him the best chance to get out there,” Carlton coach Michael Voss said on Thursday.

“He came off the operation quite well and that’s always a great start, plus he was able to get into his rehab fairly quickly.

“He’s maybe a week or two ahead of where he should

be, but if you ask Harry, he always had an eye on this round.

“We’re pleased he’s back.

We’ve done a fantastic job trying to manoeuvre our team around and there’s been some flow-on effects, but we can get our team settled again in the front half and around the ball.”

McKay and Charlie Curnow combined for 45 goals across the opening eight games, and the pair will be aiming to wreak

havoc on hapless Essendon.

The Blues have been ravaged by injuries this season, with the likes of Marc Pittonet, Jacob Weitering, Zac Williams, Mitch McGovern, Ed Curnow, and Oscar McDonald among their walking wounded.

But their luck could be finally turning, with even Caleb Marchbank to feature against the Bombers in what will be his first AFL match since round 16, 2019.

Marchbank’s 2019 campaign was prematurely ended by a fractured vertebrae in his neck, his 2020 season was wiped out by knee and calf issues, and he didn’t make an AFL appearance in 2021 after rupturing his ACL. The 16th-placed Bombers (2-9) are set to welcome back Jake Stringer (hamstring) and Matt Guelfi (hamstring), while Mason Redman returns from suspension.

Socceroos’ belief has never wavered: Behich AS the Socceroos begin preparations for arguably their biggest game since the 2005 play-off against Uruguay, fullback Aziz Behich has rejected the suggestion Australia had lost any belief that they could reach this year’s World Cup. The Socceroos face Peru in Qatar on Monday (Tuesday AEST) in an inter-continental play-off with the winner sealing a spot at November’s finals.

Australia reached that match with a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates in an Asian playoff on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST), just their second win

from their past eight qualifiers.

Having seemingly been on track to qualify automatically following a record 11-game winning run, the Socceroos’ campaign stalled after a 2-1 loss to Japan in Saitama where Behich was the unfortunate soul to concede a late own goal that handed the Samurai Blue victory.

Despite that dispiriting run, Behich said belief inside the squad had never wavered and they’ll head into the clash with the world No.22ranked Peruvians confident they can cause an upset.

“We’ve always had belief,” Behich said.

“Obviously, the campaign didn’t go the way we wanted but it’s not the first time we’ve had our backs against the wall.

“We did it last campaign as well and we’ve got belief going in against Peru.”

Behich is one of six players in the current squad who played the South Americans at the 2018 World Cup. Backed by a large travelling contingent of supporters keen to experience their first appearance at a World Cup since 1982, goals from Andre Carillo and Paolo Guerrero sealed a 2-0 win for Peru over the Socceroos.

Ponting joins Hurricanes as BBL strategist CRICKET great Ricky Ponting is joining the Hobart Hurricanes as head of strategy for the BBL franchise.

Ponting, regarded as one of cricket’s most astute minds, has signed a three-year deal with the Hurricanes.

The former Australian Test captain’s immediate task is spearheading the Hurricanes’ search for a new coach after the departure of Adam Griffiths.

“I’m passionate about the progression of Tasmanian and Australian cricket across all forms of the game so to be asked to take on such a critical role for the Hurricanes is

really special,” Ponting said in a statement on Thursday.

“I’m looking forward to getting to work and securing the best coach for what we need then building a plan for the team to execute next season.

“With a few tweaks in a couple of key areas, I believe the Hurricanes have the foundations to win our first BBL trophy.”

Ponting has been one of the most-sought after identities in world cricket, holding specialist coaching roles with the Australian team.

He has also had successful coaching stints in the

Indian Premier League with the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils/Capitals.

Cricket Tasmania had long coveted Ponting’s return to the state in some form.

“To be honest, I think Ricky probably just said ‘yes’ as he was sick of me hassling him to come and join us,” Cricket Tasmania’s chief executive officer Dominic Baker said.

“Really, it is such a win for not only the Hurricanes and Tasmanian cricket, but for the (Big Bash) League itself.

“In my mind, Ricky is undoubtedly the best T20 strategist in the world.”

Stadium needed for Tas AFL bid: McLachlan AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has indicated Tasmania’s bid for a 19th licence is contingent on the island state building a new stadium.

McLachlan met with recently appointed Tasmania premier Jeremy Rockliff in Hobart on Thursday ahead of a vote of the 18 club presidents on expansion in August.

McLachlan confirmed the league would only consider issuing a new licence, rather than relocating an existing club to Tasmania.

The state government in March announced plans to develop a multi-purpose sta-

dium at Hobart’s waterfront, costing an estimated $750 million.

“If you look around this country ... and you look at the cities where AFL and other sports (are) being played, you need a stadium that can compete in 2022, or 2025, 2026,” McLachlan said.

“Whether it’s contingent or however you want to frame it ... this team needs and will have a new stadium if it wants a licence. And I think Tasmanians will expect that.”

Tasmania’s government has pledged $150 million towards the bid, made up of $50 million for a high perfor-

mance centre and $10 million per year over a decade.

Mr Rockliff described the talks as progressive and said the funding pledge showed the government was “bloody serious” about the bid.

“We’re on the one page in terms of progressing a Tasmanian licence. We believe very much as a state government we have a very strong offer on the table,” he said.

Tasmania currently hosts AFL matches at Hobart’s Blundstone Arena with a capacity of 19,500, and at University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston which holds roughly 20,000 people. -AAP

Scrum call no excuse for Blues loss

NEW South Wales prop Junior Paulo has refused to pin blame on being held back in a scrum that led to a Queensland try as an excuse for the Blues’ loss.

Queensland took a 1-0 lead in the State of Origin series, courtesy of a 1610 win in Sydney on Wednesday.

The Maroons hit the front foot when Daly Cherry-Evans took the ball off a scrum and waltzed through unchallenged to score under the sticks in the 48th minute.

Replays appeared to show Paulo was being held back by the Maroons front row, but despite NSW captain James Tedesco appealing to referee Ashley Klein the try was given.

“You can’t make excuses,” Paulo said.

“They obviously checked it. Teddy went and questioned the ref and a try is a try.

“That’s not why we lost the game, we had plenty of opportunities, we just have to be more desperate there.”

Referee boss Gerard Maxwell was still reviewing footage on Thursday, but the NRL were happy with Klein’s performance and the decision to award the Cherry-Evans try.

Paulo put more stock in NSW’s ina-

bility to get on the front foot in the middle as the key reason for their defeat.

Payne Haas was the only NSW forward to run for more than 100 metres, while the Maroons had five forwards who hit treble figures.

Part of that was the Blues’ choice of rotations, with Paulo and Cameron Murray benched at the expense of Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Liam Martin respectively come kick-off.

Paulo was told of the move on Tuesday.

He has played just three games off the bench for Parramatta in as many seasons but on Wednesday he was unable to replicate the form which has made him one of the game’s most devastating front-rowers.

“Whatever role I had I thought it was going to work well for us,” he said.

“They (the Maroons) certainly wanted it more and I thought their middles generated quick ruck speed and they were able to capitalise off the back of that.

“We obviously didn’t win that battle even though our back five were tremendous getting us on the front foot.”

Our leisurely drive along the Lima East Road was bursting with wildlife but the day was foggy and then chilly.

Gloves and beanies were worn by some and there was always the slight chance of a little rain in the early afternoon.

Once suitably prepared for whatever mother nature might throw at us, we set off.

The first part of the walk was a gentle short amble in the forest not far from a stream.

A junction was soon reached where we turned left to head towards Lightning Ridge Track.

It was this section of the walk that determined it to be labelled a hard walk.

Not a mission impossible, but certainly somewhat challenging.

We crossed the small stream and began our ascent.

Over the course of about 1.4km we climbed from 400m to 650m.

This track was once a 4WD track, but now only motorcycles and hardy walkers are able to navigate the climb.

Upon reaching the top and the Lightning Ridge Track, walkers

were rewarded with the customary “slightly’ sugary snakes.

Some fallen tree logs and rays of glorious sunshine made this the best opportunity to take morning tea.

We continued our walk along Lightning Ridge Track passing several huge granite boulders close to the track.

These are the result of geological processes some 300 to 400 million years ago.

The more senior members in our group could not confirm that history.

A little further on we reached a scenic point called Carter’s Lookout.

A short scramble over granite boulders to the top, provided good views.

In the distance the peaks of Mount Samaria State Park were visible, however, Lake Nillahcootie was shrouded in fog.

Satisfied with what we had seen, we returned to the ridge track.

The highest point of the walk was reached at almost 800m.

Our pace was quite lively along the track, and it wasn’t long before we reached the junction with Moonee Creek Track.

This was a wide area which made a suitable lunch stop and was the halfway point of our walk.

After lunch we continued along the track.

We reached the cars after some 15km of hiking and in a time of five hours.

Our end to the day was a short drive to the James Reserve Camping area.

Here we consumed a welcomed cuppa and biscuits, thanks to an absent Pat, who still looked after us all with wonderful refreshments.

Thanks to the walking group for joining us on this day and helping me complete my trilogy of walks in the Strathbogie State Forest. Michael.

NO SENIORS: Shaun O’Neil and his senior Rangers teammates were rained out on the weekend.

THE rain held off long enough for the two junior games in North East Baseball to complete their games on Sunday.

Wangaratta Rangers went to Springdale Heights to play Albury Bears in the under 11s.

Bears had 12 players turn up with the Rangers having 15.

Rangers started the game well when they brought in six runs in their first turn at bat, then Bears equaled that score in their innings.

Both teams ran hard to keep warm in the very cold conditions,

but it was the Bears that were scoring runs when they added another 12 runs in their next two innings while holding Rangers to add just two and run out winners 18 runs to Rangers eight.

The Rangers held the upper hand in the under 15s game when the two pitchers they used for the game, Clarence Lampa and Tanner Godenzi, were both throwing strikes and making the batters swing.

The Bears had trouble finding the strike zone and batters were

walked to first base forcing the runners around to score runs.

Rangers won 16 runs to Bears four.

All other games were called off when the rain started.

There is no round of North East Baseball this weekend as the association is sending a squad to Geelong for the long weekend carnival of country baseball with teams from Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Sunraysia, Latrobe Valley, North East and one from the city of Melbourne playing a

round robin for the championship.

This year the North East Baseball Association will host the under 14s carnival which will be held at Targoora Park, Wangaratta on the weekend of July 2 and 3.

This is the first year that a junior carnival has been held in the North East for five years and our local juniors are keen to show their skills against other associations.

The under 18s carnival will be held in Ballarat on June 26 and 27.

LAST Sunday the Wangaratta Knights travelled to Corowa to endeavour to continue the wins over Corowa.

The day began with another Knights teammate Matt Ferguson playing his 50th game.

With a simple plan of wet weather footy at hand that is exactly what the Knights began with, getting to half-time with the score Knights 20 to Corowa 0.

Coach Drage told the team to continue to stick to the plan and they will have the win, however, that talk fell on deaf ears with several players wanting to try a different strategy which cost the Knights the game.

Drage was livid and told the team they lost the game themselves by not staying true to the plan.

Full-time score Knights 22 Corowa 24.

The Lady Knights played Wodonga Storm at Corowa and they played a blinder of a game with only 10 players available to play against Storm’s 15 players.

Coach Gavin Drage told them to keep their defence tight which they did and Storm had no rebuttal to the Knights tries.

Full-time score 20-0.

The Knights have a general bye this weekend.

Milawa Racquets Club push through finals THE Monday night racquetball autumn competition at Milawa Racquets Club has now finished - uninterrupted for the first time in two years.

The club had five teams of six playing with a very even competition.

It was their first final on Monday night and it was a very tight contest.

Team Ariel won over Snow White and now they will move straight into the grand final on Friday, June 17.

There was a very tight tussle between teams Cinderella and Rapunzel with Rapunzel finally winning by just one game.

It went right down to the wire.

Snow White and Rapunzel will play off on June 13 for the right to meet Ariel in the grand final.

Our racquetball grand final along with the Thursday night squash final will be held with our usual family barbecue on Friday, June 17 along with the presentation of the autumn aggregate winners.

Once the finals are done we will be offering two nights of “Come and Try” for racquetball on June 20 and/or June 27.

These events are free for everyone.

It will be for mixed ages and abilities from ages 12 to 90 and will be starting at 7pm.

Racquets and balls provided.

So far, so good for O&K

By NATHAN DE VRIES COMPARED to the logistical calamity of the previous two years, the 2022 Ovens and King season has gone off with barely a hitch, as the competition moves through its second half.

Due to past complications from COVID and state lockdowns, the competition is set to play out its full fixture for the first time since 2019.

O&K general manager Cam Green said clubs deserved all the credit for navigating the COVID climate and still putting up competitive teams every week.

“I think this time last year we were just getting back into it after that first initial hard lockdown, the circuit breaker,” he said.

“Last year we couldn’t play footy at certain times purely because of those COVID numbers, but now as we’re starting to live with it a bit more, there are three or four at a club who are potentially out each week from the football and netball sides.

“You take three or four out of two footy sides, you can manage it a little bit, but if you take three or four out of the netball side of things and everything drops away really quickly in terms of bodies available on the court.

“That’s on top of impact injuries in footy, and overuse injuries in netball and the footy as well.

“These clubs are doing it super tough in terms of that, they’re actually doing a really good job to manage that throughout the year as it has been.”

Green said it was fantastic to see a tight competition across both the football and netball aspects of the league, which spectators and players are over the moon about.

“This year, this is the closest competition we’ve had in many years everyone’s won a game and everyone’s lost a game,” he said.

“It just proves that on their day, every side’s beatable, which is fantastic.

“As exciting as it is for those clubs that do happen to go through undefeated or do have some really good purple patches of form and they absolutely dominate, for them to actually experience a loss early in the season, it almost gave everyone a bit of hope, I suppose.

With nine rounds of competition left before finals commence, the race is on for sides to make their final big push for a flag.

IT’S the matchup with the longest trip in the Ovens and King Football Netball League, but the reward is by far the sweetest, when Bonnie Doon make their way up the Hume Freeway to take on Bright at Pioneer Park tomorrow.

The Queen’s Birthday split round in the O&K sees the round 12 fixture spread over a fortnight, with the Bombers/Bright clash the only match on the docket this weekend.

The Bombers have been having an exceptional season in the seniors footy, sitting at fourth on the ladder just a game behind sides like Bright and Milawa, but the side has the potential to be number one.

“We’ve had a couple of close losses in there too, things could’ve gone a little bit differently in a few games, and that’s going to be the difference at the end of the day in a very tight top five

or six,” coach Ken Murray said.

“You need to take your chances when they come along and whilst we were pretty disappointed we never took the chance on the weekend against Benalla.

“We led for the majority of the game and we felt like we’ve certainly got what it takes on our day to take it up to the best sides.

“We were disappointed not to get the points, to be honest, but that sort of echoed a bit of good energy through the group as we build up to our bye week.”

Murray said the Mountain Men were going to be hard to overcome, with the Bombers set to be without

some senior players through the midfield.

“Bright are flying, they’re a very strong side, they’re always hard to beat up there so we’ll have to play our absolute best footy to stay in the game and give ourselves a chance,” he said.

“I think it could be a bit of a wet affair which doesn’t necessarily make it a great spectacle, but it does make it a pretty fierce contest.

“We’ll just have to do everything we can to stay in the game from the outset and hopefully build throughout.

“I think with a substantial part of our midfield group out of the equation at the moment - unfortunately there’s a wedding in Ireland so that’s sucked quite a few of our top end guys away - it just means that that next level and next tier of guys who maybe don’t start in those key

midfield roles are going to start to play a role.

“They did a fantastic job last week against arguably the best midfield in the competition in Benalla and I think if we can repeat that intensity and effort, we’ll be in it up to our armpits.”

Bright coach Paul Harrison said the contest will be a good measuring bar for his side as they move through the second half of the competition.

“It definitely will be a challenge, it’s a really big test for us,” he said.

“Our ground’s holding up fairly well at the moment, and we’ve got a couple more mids coming back into the team this week in James O’Shea and Nathan Lyons, who are two really good ins for us.

“Hopefully we can run them off our feet, play our own game style, and I’ll back us in.”

BONNIE Doon will be looking to back up their spectacular one goal win from last weekend with another scalp when the Bombers take on Bright tomorrow.

The match up will be a good testing ground for both sides, having not gone head to head since 2019.

Bombers’ A grade coach Michelle Tanner said the match will be a loud and tightly contested four quarters.

“We don’t underestimate anyone - Bright’s going to be tough, especially over there, and it’s going to be freezing, no doubt,” she said.

“We had a pretty good training session on Tuesday night, a quick

fitness one, so everyone’s pretty happy.

“We didn’t get to play them last year because of COVID, so we haven’t played them in two years.

“I think they’re probably similar to us in that people underestimate us a bit and we fight hard.

“They always have been, they’ve always been on a level playing field with us, but I don’t know what they’ll do.”

With a less than full strength side hopping on the bus from Bonnie Doon, Tanner said the younger players will have a shot at stepping up and making their name in the A grade competition.

“I think Portia’s (Keatch) on the way up - she didn’t have a very good week last week, I think she got intimidated by the physicality

of Benalla,” she said.

“She sometimes does that then she’ll come out and have a breakout game, so I’m hoping she’ll do that this week.

“She’s only 17, so standing up in the A grade, she’s got a lot of pressure on her.

“Because Mia (Tanner) is down in defence, she usually has that support there, so she’ll have to have a good game this week, I think.

“I think Mia down there in defence as well, she had a really good game last week, she killed it, so I’m hoping she’ll do the same.”

THE best pickleball players across Victoria and New South Wales will face off this weekend in Wangaratta’s Battle of the Border Tournament.

The sport, a mix of tennis, ping pong and badminton, will be showcased in a free two-day event at Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre (WSAC) as the best 10 players from both states compete to see which state can lay claim to the ‘Golden Paddle’.

“It’s an opportunity to see the best in the state play and not have to pay anything to do it - which is a bonus,” said Wangaratta Pickleball club president Bryan Wilson, who will be competing in the Victorian team.

On Saturday men’s and women’s teams will compete, while on Sunday mixed teams will play against each other.

The 22-player state teams will accumulate points with each win to determine which region can claim to have the

greatest pickleball players.

The better team will win the ‘Golden Paddle’, a golden oversized pickleball paddle, as well as individual medals.

Players awarded best and fairest will also receive a watch from Citizen, a sponsor of the event.

The Wangaratta Pickleball Club will be hosting a raffle to raise money for an automatic defibrillator, giving players and spectators the chance to win a number of prize packs donated

“The golf driving range has been a revelation for our club, and the number of people using the facility has been enormous since opening,” Hill said.

“Our membership has increased beyond the committee’s expectation, and we are seeing people of all ages and fitness levels coming out and using the facility.

“The driving range being undercover also makes it an activity that can be used 12 months a year.

“We are finding that the addition of the driving range is drawing people in from further afield, with people visiting from Beechworth, Yarrawonga and Myrtleford traveling to experience the range.”

Three Magpie greats to be welcomed into Hall of Fame Graham Woods,, Tom Sanderson and Jason Lappin pp honoured for their service WANGARATTA Magpies will admit three more club legends into its Hall of Fame tomorrow night.

Six-time premiership player Graham Woods, trainer for more than four decades Tom Sanderson, and dual premiership coach Jason Lappin will be honoured for their service to the club at the Magpies clubrooms after the derby tomorrow.

Graham Woods Graham was part of the legendary black and white teams that won a record four successive flags from 1949 to 1952 before adding two more in 1957 and 1961 for good measure.

He joined the club in 1948 after having a couple of runs with Rutherglen where little interest was shown in his talents.

The Boorhaman boy followed in his father Vic’s boot steps, who as a young player was a member of the 1920 Magpies Ovens and King premiership side.

Graham became a regular in the Mac Holten coached teams which also earned him selection in O&M representative teams from 1952 to 1954.

He was awarded club life membership in 1959 and was the club’s games record holder with 249 for more than 30 years.

He was equally committed off the field and was a Wangaratta Shire councillor for 12 years including one year as shire president in 1972.

Tom Sanderson Few can boast Tom’s 41 years’ service with the club from goal umpire in 1945 to trainer in 1949-50 and then head trainer for a remarkable 36 years from 1951 to 1986.

He and his wife Ida joined the club from Eldorado and both committed themselves fully and each eventually received a life membership.

After a year waving the flags, Tom was appointed trainer under long-time head trainer Marty Bean and, with legendary South Melbourne

 Tom Sanderson. full forward Laurie Nash as coach, they were part of the 1946 premiership team.

Tom became head trainer in 1951 and remained in the role until his retirement in 1986.

He had a front row seat through the club’s golden years, on the sidelines for eight O&M premierships, as well as head trainer for the O&M representative teams during that period.

He became a life member of the VCFL in 1983 and the O&M league in 1984.

He joined the Magpies in 1992 and won the first of his four best and fairest awards with the club the following year at just 19 years of age.

He had stints at a number of clubs after that before being drafted in 1996 by the Western Bulldogs but a broken leg saw his season lost and he moved onto Coburg in the VFA where he won another B&F before returning to the Magpies as assistant playing coach.

As non-playing coach he enjoyed ultimate team success, winning the drought breaking premierships of 2007 and 2008 and in 2009, his last at the helm at Wangaratta, he was awarded the VCFL Medal as senior coach of the year.

He was head of football performance for North Melbourne until the end of 2020 and has now joined the Geelong coaching staff as a football analyst.

Rovers eye derby improvement

FOR Wangaratta Rovers, Saturday’s derby is just about redemption after a 121 point thrashing by Wangaratta in their round one clash.

This time around though the match that divides a town will be played at WJ Findlay Oval, a place where the Hawks always put up a fight.

Wangaratta Rovers forward Alex Marklew is keen to have a crack at the undefeated Magpies at home.

“This time around we’re on our home deck and we love playing there,” Marklew said.

“Having our own supporters there that get behind us makes a huge difference I think.

“It was really challenging at Norm Minns earlier on the year, we just hate going there so hopefully being back at home will be a bit of an advantage.”

Wangaratta Rovers struggled across the whole field against Wangaratta earlier on in the year, especially in the contest.

The Magpies won both the contested possession (13893) and contested marking (20-8) stats by a large margin which will have to be fixed by the Rovers if they’re to stand a chance.

“I think we just need to improve around the contest,” Marklew said.

Confidence will be flowing ahead of derby

By WILLSON MACK WANGARATTA Rovers netballers will no doubt take confidence from their two goal loss to North Albury last weekend when they meet Wangaratta tomorrow in the derby.

The Hawks made a brilliant comeback in the final quarter after being six goals down at the last break but couldn’t find the final three goals to snatch victory.

The Hoppers beat Wangaratta in round four which will further fill the Hawks girls boots with confidence.

However, the Magpies have rediscovered their mojo off the back of a whopping 19 goal victory over premiership fancies Lavington last weekend.

After coming off a loss to Wodonga Raiders before the bye, the Magpies were eager to re-stamp their authority on the rest of the competition.

Crimmins said her girls can’t wait for the derby.

“It’s always good to play in the derby,” Crimmins said.

“We are looking forward it and hoping we can produce another good game.

“They are showing improvement, last time it was a close game and will most likely be another close game.

“We’re just hoping we are able to play a great four quarter performance and really stick to our game.”

It’ll be a mouth-watering battle in Wangaratta’s offense with two of the best players in the league set to go head-to-head.

Magpies shooter Georgia Clark has quickly announced herself as one of the best in the competition, while Wangaratta Rovers defenders Mikaela Trethowan and Jenna McLeod have been pillars in defence all year for their team.

The Rovers also return to their home court, a place the club always performs well at.

“We’re nowhere near as tall as them so if we win the ball we can then try and beat them on the outside and control the footy with our skills.

“We need to slow them down when going into attack and put them under pressure that way.”

The ever reliable Shane Gaston was out with injury when the pair last met and his presence will no doubt make a huge difference, especially after getting smashed in the hit outs 5418 last time around.

“Not having ‘Gatto’ (Gaston) last time was really hard,” Marklew said.

“We just weren’t getting first use of the ball so having him back will be huge.”

It will no doubt be another battle of the midfields with both sides boasting some of the best players in the league in that department.

The likes of Joe Richards, Abe Ankers and Jackson Clark will go head-to-head with Lukas Webb, Dylan Stone and Todd Bryant which will be worth the admission price alone.

Saturday’s match starts at 2pm.

O&M induct two more to hall of fame FORMER Corowa premiership player and Yarrawonga best and fairest Robert Tait and former Wodonga triple premiership player the late David Turner, were both inducted into the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League Hall of Fame yesterday.

Tait played 76 games for the Roos and 174 games for the Pigeons, was an O&M representative eight times, an O&M board member for seven years and is a life member of the Yarrawonga Football Club.

Turner, who tragically died from a brain tumour aged 39, booted 582 goals in 232 games for the Bulldogs and played in the club’s 1981, 1987 and 1992 premiership sides.

He won the Bulldogs’ goalkicking seven times and is a member of the club’s Hall of Fame and Team of the Century.

WANGARATTA coach Ben Reid expects an improved Wangaratta Rovers team in tomorrow’s derby at WJ Findlay Oval.

Despite crushing the Hawks by 121 points in round one, the Magpies won’t be complacent going into this weekend’s clash.

Wangaratta Rovers gain some important players this time around with star ruckman Shane Gaston and athletic forward Tom Boyd in the fold for this derby.

“It’ll be a good match,” Reid said.

“They’ve got some different players in this time around like ‘Gatto’ (Gaston) in the ruck and Boyd up forward so they’re two quality players that are back in the line up that we’re going to have to be mindful of.

“Any derby’s a good game

no matter where both sides are on the ladder.”

After their clash in round one, Reid expects the Hawks to roll out a similar style of play.

“We know the way they want to play, they want to take care of the ball and get the ball in the hands of their good kicks,” he said.

“Our team defence is going to be really important if we want to stop their ball movement.

“They move the ball really well when they’re allowed

to so we’re going to have to limit that.

“Players like Sam Murray off half back is someone who’s good in the air for his size and uses the ball really well so he’s someone we’re going to have to be mindful of because otherwise he’ll hurt us.”

The Hawks are always strong at home and Wangaratta were on the receiving end of that last season when they took out the first derby.

“It’s pretty crazy how a road between two grounds is

somehow a huge advantage to the home team,” Reid said.

“Last year the game there was a great game of footy but there’s definitely a little bit of extra motivation to win there because we haven’t for a few years.

“It’s always good fun playing over there though and I’m sure both teams are looking forward to it.”

“We’ll be wearing coloured armbands and all funds raised from our sock sales will go to the Albury Wodonga cancer facility,” Reid said.

“It’s a great initiative that we’re pleased to be a part of.”

Tomorrow’s derby clash starts at 2pm.
