“We would love to see more disabled parking, or longer parking times,” Ms Jackson said.

She said the car park at the end of Appin Street was quickly filled each school day by teachers from both WDSS and neighbouring Appin Park Primary School, and families delivering their children to school.

The issue has been further impacted by the loss of car parks on both school sites in the street due to building works.

The parking issue was raised with council earlier this year by Vanichya Contessa, whose daughter Tash began attending WDSS as a junior student last year following the family’s move from Melbourne.

Mrs Contessa said she was surprised there were only two disabled parking spots outside the school, and felt more consideration was needed.

“We came from a school in Melbourne which is a

similar size and had six disabled parking spots and at least 20 other spots for parents to park, so it was a bit of an eye-opener to see the parking availability here,” she said.

“There is space in front of the school for six cars, but some parents drive longer cars fitted for disabilities, which often need a two metre clearance, so that means less space.

“In (nearby) Hulme Drive, there are about four parking spots available, and they fill quickly.”

Mrs Contessa said for students like Tash, who has hypotonia (low muscle tone), there needed to be

more practical solutions for school drop-off and pick-up than current parking restrictions allowed.

“This year I think it’s been more of an issue because there are more junior students needing one-on-one assistance, including with wheelchairs, and the younger students are more likely to be driven in to school rather than going on the bus,” she said.

“I think that whole area near the school should be available for parking.

“I know for residents it may be a pain, but it’s literally for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at the end of the school day.

“The ‘no standing’ limit only applies during school times - the rest of the time residents can park there.

“If someone has parked over a driveway, that’s absolutely a no-no, but apart from that, it should be available for parking.

“Six car parks and two disabled car parks are not enough for the whole school population.

“Parents feel it’s really unfair, and I think there just needs to be a bit of empathy for the position parents are in with their children.

“It’s a hard slog; it’s not an easy thing to be a full-time carer, and some parents may have more than one

child at the school, so to not be able to park close enough to take them in or pick them up from school makes it more difficult.

“These are some of the most vulnerable people in the community, and it’s about disability access.”

Mrs Contessa said she had contacted the Rural City of Wangaratta in the first week of February with her concerns about the need for an increase in parking availability, and it was addressed during question time at council’s last meeting on February 28.

Mr Goonan said at the meeting that “unfortunately, schools are exempt

from most of the planning requirements, which often means that the parking is inadequate”.

“It often then falls back on council to resolve these parking issues,” he said.

“Officers have assessed the school and surrounding residents’ parking requirements. “(They) believe there is room for an additional on street all-abilities parking bay.

“Officers will also review the existing parking limits in consultation with residents and the school to see if any timing changes would assist.

“I would expect the work to be completed in four to six weeks.”

“March is historically a high-risk month for road trauma and we cannot afford complacency on our roads complacency is the true contributor to road trauma.”

Police warn over complacency danger

By RYAN MALCOLM POLICE are determined to turn around a “shocking” start to the year on the roads, with a statewide enforcement effort to be conducted over the Labour Day long weekend.

So far this year, 68 lives have been lost on Victorian roads, 18 more than at the same time last year, and a 45 per cent increase on the fiveyear average.

Rural roads account for 42 deaths across the state, a figure 57 per cent higher than its five-year average, and more than half of this year’s fatalities have involved single-vehicle collisions, 80 per cent of which have involved vehicles leaving the road and colliding with a roadside object - predominantly trees.

Police’s Operation Arid initiative, which commences today and will run through to 11.59pm on Monday, will see additional officers deployed to target high-risk driving and non-compliance as part of a concerted effort to limit road trauma.

Eastern region division four road policing advisor, Acting Senior Sergeant Colleen Sheridan, said all police units in the Wangaratta area would have road safety at the forefront of their minds throughout the weekend.

“Unfortunately March has historically been a high-risk period for road trauma across the state,” she said.

“We would like everyone to make it to their destination safely, be it those travelling from afar to visit our

“Road safety is everyone’s business - the police, our partner agencies and community are all responsible for safety on the roads.

“Our message is slow down, put down the mobile phone, pay attention to road signs and other drivers, and concentrate on your surroundings - look out for yourselves and your mates, and if you are drinking, find

a designated driver.”

Last year’s Labour Day long weekend operation detected almost 7200 traffic offences across the state, with 2987 speeding offences, 284 drink drivers, 231 drug drivers and 239 mobile phone offences.

Victoria Police assistant commissioner road policing, Glenn Weir, said it was vital drivers avoided becoming complacent, particularly on regional roads.

Court hears that efforts to save Bruck were “futile” THERE was a sense of “futility” around the operation of Bruck Textiles in the weeks ahead of the Wangaratta business’ eventual sale, a Melbourne court has heard.

Three former Bruck executives are currently facing a committal hearing in Melbourne over allegations they each entered into agreements to withhold or significantly reduce access to employee entitlements following the

business’ sale in July 2014.

Board chair Philip Bart, as well as chief executive officer Geoffrey Parker and chief financial officer Ron Johnson returned to Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday for day four of a hearing expected to continue into next month, when several key witnesses were cross examined by the defence.

The sale of the business for $1 to Mr Johnson and Mr Parker’s new business Aus-

tralian Textile Mills (ATM) left up to 60 Wangaratta employees redundant and unable to access entitlements worth up to $3.48m.

Yesterday, former Ferrier Hodgson accountant John Lindholm said Mr Bart had expressed a sense of “futility” during an alleged meeting between the two and Mr Parker in late May 2014, weeks before the business’ ultimate sale.

He said he could not remember whether Mr Bart

had attended the meeting in person or via telephone, but said the trio had discussed the pros and cons of placing the business into voluntary administration.

The court had previously heard executives had explored ways to legally reduce their workforce since 2012, as they attempted to manage debt through the peaks and troughs associated with the textile business.

Mr Lindholm said he was aware the business faced

significant financial challenges and that Mr Bart had acknowledged it was unlikely the business could be sold within Australia or internationally.

“A sale to another party wasn’t an option in Mr Bart’s mind,” he told the court.

Mr Lindholm explained how liquidating the company would see the entire Bruck workforce left unemployed, and noted the trio had discussed potentially appointing an administrator

in an effort to save a number of jobs and a valuable defence force contract.

However, he said Mr Bart was “pretty firmly of the view” that if Bruck went into administration, the business would end up with nothing.

He said he had warned Bruck executives a potential sale internally would not go under the radar of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

The hearing continues.

CCTV cameras installed in Wangaratta’s CBD are helping curb vandalism, with council planning to extend surveillance into other areas.

According to the Rural City of Wangaratta’s latest quarterly review of its four-year council plan, CCTV cameras have been installed in prime vandalism areas including the Bike Hub (on Murphy Street) and “they appear to be having a significant impact”.

The review says the task is 85 per cent complete and it has resulted in a “reduced amount of vandalism”.

Mitchell Avenue, which has been transformed over the last seven years into a popular recreational area for people to visit with attractions such as a splash park, bike pump track, children’s garden and dog park, is also proposed to receive CCTV cameras.

Council’s latest review of the four-year plan identifies all proposed projects’ statuses as being either ‘on track’, ‘at risk’ or ‘off track’.

According to the update, council is 80 per cent through the development of a traffic management plan to improve vehicle traffic flow throughout the CBD, including both short-term and long-term solutions.

The project was awarded to One Mile and is currently underway with initial data collection of traffic profiles.

Council director corporate and leisure, Sarah Brindley, said councillors adopted their four-year council plan with engagement and consultation with the community, and the quarterly update provides a record of transparency and a demonstration of the work that’s been undertaken.

Some of the other key indicators reported as ‘on track’ include:  days to close a customer request, at four days less than the target of 14 days;  food safety assessments, at 94 per cent complete against a target of 88 per cent;  annual number of building permits issued for new dwellings, at 127 against a target of 75; and  annual number of new

residential lots released, at 103 against a target of 75.

Indicators reported as ‘at risk’ are:  increase in WSAC visitation and council is in the process of transitioning to a new approach to recording visitation figures via the POS system and entry gates and updated reporting will be provided once this is in place; and  kerbside collection waste diverted to landfill.

Indicators reported as ‘off track’ are:  planning applications made within required time frame (issues caused by resource challenges); and  planning application processing days (issues caused by resource challenges).

Council’s planning applications enquiry desk is now only open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday due to staff shortages.

Driver uninjured in car crash in city CBD EMERGENCY service crews were called to Faithfull Street in Wangaratta early yesterday morning, after a vehicle drove through and displaced a park bench near Victoria Parade.

Fire Rescue Victoria, police and ambulance staff were called to the scene around 8.20am, following reports a vehicle had crashed into a building.

The vehicle, which came to rest in a car park out the front of the Centrelink building, suffered significant front-end damage.

Firefighters assisted the driver from the vehicle, before handing them over to paramedics, who deemed no emergency treatment or transport would be required.

Streetscape meeting in Cheshunt next week THE Rural City of Wangaratta is inviting the community to attend a dropin session next week to discuss the upcoming Cheshunt streetscape works.

The session will be held on Wednesday, March 15 at the Cheshunt Hall from 6pm to 7.30pm and attended by council officers.

The Cheshunt streetscape works are being funded as part of the $4M King Valley Prosecco Road Revitalisation Project and are designed to deliver key outcomes identified by the community as a part of the Rural Placemaking Program.

The meeting follows recent com-

munity feedback on social media citing concerns such as an inadequate number of carparks and lack of provisions for buses and heavy vehicles.

Council director infrastructure services, Marcus Goonan, said on social media the works are due to start on March 20 and five community meetings and drop-in sessions have already been held, but there is still time to for community members to have their say and “changes can still be made if required and within reason”.

Couple set to soak up community atmosphere THE chance to enjoy a morning walk together, while being part of a larger community event focused on keeping people active, was too good to pass up for Wangaratta couple Susan and John Cuthbert.

Susan and John have signed up to take part in the 5km distance in the Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Run 2023, when it’s staged on March 19 from the Wangaratta Showgrounds.

“I did the 5km pre-COVID, and I enjoyed it, so this time we’re walking together,” Susan said.

“I usually do Parkrun every Saturday morning, walking the 5km course. I had thought it was just for runners, but was

told you could walk it, and I’ve really loved that.

“It attracts large groups of people on a Saturday, and a lot of them are training for the marathon.”

When people remark on her name, Susan jokes that she tells people she’s “like Betty, but not as fast”.

“Like Parkrun, this event is not stressful at all; you can go at your own pace, so there’s no need to walk fast,” she said.

Susan loves the community aspect of the marathon and fun run, and seeing so many people getting enthusiastic about keeping active and fit.

“Other family members have done it in the past too, so it’s a great way to bring people of all ages out for an event like this, particularly older people.

“I fit into that demographic now, and I think it’s so important to keep moving and stay busy. You’ve got to do it for your mental health, as much as your physical health.

“And for the young ones, it’s good to see them out enjoying being active.

“I’d encourage others to take

part - it’s a wonderful course along the river.”

The Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Run includes several different options for athletes, from the marathon (42.2km) and half-marathon (21.1km) the latter of which welcomes walkers - to the Wangaratta Engineering 10km walk/run, the Wangaratta-Benalla Motor Group 5km walk/run, and the RJ Sanderson 2km primary school challenge walk/run.

New-look Cathedral Shop focuses on fair trade

By SIMONE KERWIN A REVAMPED Cathedral Shop will be open during Saturday’s Wangaratta Farmers’ Market, held in the grounds of Holy Trinity Cathedral, for visitors to explore its new range of fair trade gift items.

Manager Stephanie Goodger said she believed the shop - located next to the cathedral - was one of the few places in the rural city offering fair trade products, which assist producers in developing countries, as well as First Nations people, to achieve equitable trade relationships.

“We have not only Christian gifts, but are promoting Christian values through stocking the fair trade items, including a large range of First Nations art which ensures the artists receive royalties,” Mrs Goodger said.

“A lot of the work is done by women, so in patriarchal societies, the money then goes back into families to support them.

“Many items use the

traditional crafts of the region, or use what is available to them, repurposing what would otherwise be waste into beautiful things.

“The fair trade concept fits in with the message of the cathedral: to do things with justice.”

Available items range from Nativity sets to jewellery, bags, shopping baskets, and even teddy bears made using alpaca fleece.

Mrs Goodger said the response to the revamped interior of the shop had been positive, and she hoped people would take time to look around during the Farmers’ Market tomorrow.

The Cathedral Shop is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 4pm, and also during special occasions such as the Farmers’ Market.

Erratic driver jailed A DRIVER has been jailed and banned from driving for three years, after he collided with a number of vehicles in the Wangaratta township before ditching his vehicle on the Hume Freeway last month.

Bernard Jarman, 41, was told his erratic driving after entering the Wangaratta CBD from the north shortly after 5pm on February 16 was fortunate not to seriously injure a number of victims, after he repeatedly ran red lights, overtook vehicles and drove on the wrong side of the road while towing a trailer.

The Bundaberg man faced Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court via WebeX from custody at Fulham Correctional Centre on Wednesday, pleading guilty to a number

of charges including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving under the influence of drugs and drug possession.

The court heard Jarman had been moving from Queensland to his partner’s home in Rosebud when the offending occurred, as the methylamphetamine-affected driver became lost in the rural city after exiting the freeway.

According to police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Stuart Pritchard, the accused had first collided with a vehicle at the Faithfull Street intersection with Murphy Street, before running a red light at Reid Street and hitting a car at the Ford Street roundabout.

He was said to have driven over the roundabout onto Ryley Street, when he began overtaking vehicles and driving erratically at speed, before running another red light as he turned right onto Sisely Avenue.

Police were unable to intercept Jarman, who was later reported to have returned to the Ryley Street, doing loops before continuing down the wrong side of Greta Road near the Vincent Road intersection.

A series of witnesses reported the vehicle driving over the Joyce Way roundabout at up to 80kph, before Jarman’s vehicle merged northbound onto the Hume Freeway, crashing into at least one other car before

completing a u-turn and ditching his vehicle near the Eldorado Road.

After being confronted by police, Jarman was said to have ran across two lanes of traffic, jumping the wire fence along the median strip before attempting to crawl under a b-double which had screeched to a stop.

He was eventually arrested shortly before 6pm and conveyed to Wangaratta Police Station, where he provided a largely no comment interview before noting he largely had no recollection of the events.

LSC Pritchard said Jarman had cooperated with police and had assisted them in accessing a locked safe found in the rear of his

vehicle, which contained two illegal gel blasters, a butterfly knife, cash and deal bags containing an amount of drugs.

Jarman’s pet snake had also been found in the vehicle, and had been surrendered to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action at a previous hearing.

Defence counsel Anthony Coote said his client had admitted his wrongdoing from the outset, and acknowledged he was fortunate not to be facing more serious charges.

He said Jarman had not been fleeing police during the offending, and had instead become lost due to his use of methylampheta-

mine, a notion LSC Pritchard agreed with.

“He feels terrible about it - he could have killed someone,” he said.

Magistrate Peter Mithen imposed a four month prison sentence and fined Jarman $1000 for the offending, before banning him from driving for three years. “(This is) one of the worst examples of driving under the influence of a drug,” he said.

“It was a reprehensible piece of conduct where people were put in danger - the scary thing is you have no recollection of it other than walking along the highway.”

He also ordered the drugs and weapons be forfeited to police.

Enjoy parks, keep them clean LABOUR Day long weekend travellers heading for the North East’s great outdoors have been urged to stay safe and keep public land clean.

The Conservation Regulator, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and Parks Victoria are urging visitors to spend their time on public land responsibly, particular-

ly when extinguishing their campfires and cleaning up at the end of their stay.

Authorised officers from all three agencies will be patrolling forests, parks and reserves targeting littering and unsafe campfires.

Whether staying for a day or the whole weekend, visitors to parks and forests are reminded not to leave rub-

bish behind at the end of their stay.

David Nugent, director fire, emergency and enforcement, Parks Victoria, said authorised officers have detected 219 cases of illegal rubbish dumping on public land over the recent summer period.

He said dumping of rubbish on public land is ille-

gal and can have significant impacts on the environment and human health.

“All rubbish must be taken home, not dumped or burned,” he said.

On a positive note, Mr Nugent said there was a reduction in the number of unattended campfires reported over the summer period.

He said campfires should

never be left unattended, and they must be put out with water, not soil, and be cool to the touch before leaving.

“Remember to check the Parks Victoria website for the latest updates before you head into nature this long weekend,” Mr Nugent said.

“There is a wealth of information about camping and hiking safely and re-

spectfully, firewood regulations and fire safety.”

Anyone who witnesses illegal vehicle use or rubbish dumping on public land is encouraged to report it on 136 186.

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN DRAG performances, live music, stallholders and more are set to fill the King George Gardens with plenty of colour and entertainment this afternoon for Wangaratta’s inaugural Pride Fair Day. Pride Fair Day, organised by LINE Wangaratta, will be celebrating the diversity of LGBTQIA+ people and allies within the region and is an opportunity for people to create connections with each other and raise awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The fair day runs from 4pm-7pm with free entry and will include family-friendly games, stalls from local businesses and community groups, live music, drag performances, face painting, food trucks, showbags and free activities for kids.

Headlining the entertainment today will be the drag festival company Dragged Out Beechworth.

Local ambassador, Tim Cole-Jarrod, or better known as stage name ‘Sarah Belle’, said he will be putting on a couple of different shows as Sarah and operating the festival’s stall at the fair.

COMING TO TOWN: Beechworth local Sarah Belle will be showing off some of her moves today at the Pride Fair Day in the King George Gardens starting from 4pm until 7pm.

“Mainly what we’ll be doing and what I think the pride event is about is just having a bit of fun and showing some inclusivity; people can be who they are and who they want to be and be free to do so,” he said.

Dragged Out Beechworth held its inaugural festival last year which was a big hit in regional Victoria

and will be hosting another festival in Beechworth later this year.

Mr Cole-Jarrod said while there’s some uncertainty with how the event will look being the first of its kind in Wangaratta, he was confident the community will rally behind it.

One of the many stallholders signed up for the event will be Wangaratta based Victoria Guimaraes and her handmade accessories of Lazy Daisy Creations, putting items such as earrings, necklaces, pins and badge reels.

Ms Guimaraes said she has a great working relationship with LINE Wangaratta, helping each other raise funds and awareness at markets in the past.

“Mostly I wanted to support the event, because my pride stuff sells really well,” she said.

“Every market I do people keep asking me for more stuff, even all the parents ask for some ally products to be able to support their kids so I’ve been trying to make some more things for Friday so I’m able to have pride products, trans products and products for allies.

“I’m really excited for the community to be able have a safe place here in Wangaratta because I know it’s hard, a lot of people have some older mentalities and aren’t up to date with everything, so I think especially for the young people right now to know there’s allies to support them here in the community to help slowly change the mindset.”

Old remnant trees another solar victim THE solar development at Meadow Creek is not just loss of productive farmland, the impact on waterways and the catchment, but also the loss of trees and biodiversity.

The solar development at North Wangaratta is proposing to remove 34 large old remnant trees and have a look at Glenrowan to see how many trees have been bulldozed recently.

How many large old remnant trees hundreds of years old are going to be bulldozed at Meadow Creek?

These large old remnant trees provide habitat for 58 species of hollow dependent fauna in North East Victoria, with 11 of these listed as threatened in Victoria.

They also store large amounts of carbon.

The loss of these remnant old trees and biodiversity is cumulative, with new plantings taking hundreds of years to supply the same habitat value.

housing crisis DEAR Treasurer Chalmers and Minister Collins, we are writing to urge you to maintain funding for homelessness services and not cut $65 million from programs that provide critical support to people who have lost, or risk losing their home.

Record rent increases over the past couple of years and record low vacancy rates mean homelessness services are under immense pressure.

Rising interest rates will only add to the challenge. In 2020-21 services were unable to assist 288 people per day, of whom two thirds were women and children, many fleeing domestic and family violence.

It is estimated that these cuts would result in a loss of 650 homelessness workers across the country, three quarters of whom are women.

With less workers to provide the help people need, more people will be turned away.

These service cuts will have a devastating impact on vulnerable people using homelessness services.

Of those needing help: 39 per cent are women and children and other survivors who have experienced domestic and family violence; 42 per cent are children or young people under 24 and more than 25,000 are over 55.

We note that in the 2022 budget, the Federal Government committed $560 million to Commonwealth funded community services to meet the ongoing costs of the Equal Remunera-

This funding was welcome and will provide important ongoing capacity in these services.

We are seeking equity in treatment of Commonwealth funded services to provide ongoing funding for the costs of ERO faced by homelessness services funded through the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement.

We understand that the NHHA is being rolled over for 12 months to align the new agreement with the National Housing and Homelessness Plan.

The new Agreement will be an opportunity to better match housing and homelessness investment to the scale of need.

But over the 12 month extension, it is critical that funding levels are maintained, and not cut, as a minimum.

In 2023, the Federal Government will deliver an Action Plan to end violence against women and children and develop a National Housing and Homelessness Plan.

Group unites CFA women

FEMALE firefighters from across the North East are banding together to provide support and training opportunities for each other as part of a cross-district networking group.

Some 70 staff and volunteers from CFA District 23 (Wangaratta & Mansfield) and District 22 (Shepparton) gathered in Benalla last month to launch the initiative, which is touted to effect real change within the CFA. Playing a key role in the group’s inception was Jamieson Fire Brigade 4th lieutenant, Janene Ridley, whose role as D23’s representative on the statewide Women’s Advisory Committee sees her meet regularly with CFA chief executive officer Natalie McDonald and chief fire officer Jason Heffernan.

“The turnout for the launch of the new women’s networking group demonstrated that there are many

members who are women who are interested in sharing their expertise to support one another,” Ms Ridley said.

“It’s important that we keep the momentum going right now, so we’re inviting all women within D23 and D22 to join our online meetings to help us work toward making the changes we want to see within CFA.” Ms McDonald, as well as Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) program manager for Aboriginal partnerships, Donna Sherwen, and Fire Rescue Victoria Wodonga senior station officer Claire Healy, also spoke at the event.

The CFA CEO said the event saw the largest gathering of CFA women in one room she had been a part of since her appointment in early 2021.

Celebrating Wangaratta’s lifeblood donors this month

By CHLOE JAENICKE ON International Women’s Day, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood teamed up with iconic Australian female designer Jenny Kee to celebrate those who give blood.

Ms Kee first witnessed the power of blood donation during the 1977 Granville train disaster when thousands of Australians donated blood to save the lives of those who had been injured.

Inspired by International

Women’s Day, Ms Kee has created a limited-edition bandage, which will be wrapped around the arms of donors who roll up their sleeves to donate throughout March.

The bold bandage, which is emblazoned with some of Ms Kee’s signature motifs, including doves, hearts and waratahs, pays tribute to the generous and giving women of Australia who change lives.

Shae Burns said Lifeblood was thrilled to work with Ms Kee to acknowledge Australia’s generous donors, including the dozens of donors who come in to the Wangaratta Donor Centre each week, and raise awareness of their life-saving contributions.

“One donation is needed every 18 seconds in Australia and a new blood donor is needed every four minutes,” Ms Burns said.

“Just over half of Australian donors are female (51 per

cent), while 55 per cent of new donors in Australia are women, but we always need more.

“More donors are always needed at the Wangaratta Donor Centre, which is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.”

Vicki Mason was among those at the Wangaratta Donor Centre giving blood on International Women’s Day. Ms Mason has been donating for five years as a way to give back to the community

and Wednesday was her 221st donation.

“I think it’s a rewarding thing to do and you are just helping people,” she said.

“You may not know who you’re helping but you’re still helping.”

Rob and Di Worthington are retiring after 36 years of ownership of West End Lotto and Wool

Hanging up the tickets

FTER almost 36 years of ownership at the Phillipson Street West End Lotto and Wool store, Rob and Di Worthington will miss the memories of serving generations of customers as they head into retirement next week.

Putting the store on sale late last year, West End Lotto and Wool was sold to Michelle and Bob Johns who prepare to take over from Monday.

Originally residing and having their children Mark and Jayne in Melbourne, Ms Worthington said in the spring of 1986 the family was looking for a change and to escape the crowded city environment.

“We used to always come up here to visit Rob’s sister who married a tobacco farmer at Markwood, his mother lived here and his brother was out at Whorouly; so we were up here lots of weekends and we thought it’d be a nice lifestyle for our family,” she said.

“We then saw this little ad in the paper for a business for sale, we happened to be going on holidays to Queensland in the October, it was a road trip, and we thought on the way back we would call in at Rob’s sisters place and have a look.

“From there it eventuated and we moved here in the April of 1987.

“Our daughter was in prep when we moved here but our son was in the store with us most of the time and the customers used to love that, he pretty much grew up in the shop.”

The store quickly became known as “the little gem in the west”, as the Worthington’s embraced the changes over the years from the traditional Wednesday and Saturday lotto days bought with Tatts tickets, to the introduction of Powerball, Ozlotto, Keno and daily draws.

The couple has also operated their wide selection of knitting yarns and accessories, which Ms Worthington said she enjoyed the challenge of keeping up with the style and trends of the time, particularly in baby and children clothing.

Ms Worthington said they liked to promote themselves as the “little old fashion community store”, which they thought appealed to the strength and togetherness of the community and interest of visitors out of town.

“We love what we’re doing,

we love dealing with all the public and the community, our children have been involved in the community through school and the two of them are into their sport; we’ve been involved with them,” she said.

“It’s a good community town and that’s what we’ve loved about it and we’ve loved the lifestyle we’ve had as well, it’s so much more relaxed.

“The other week we went to the Rovers function when Paddy Dangerfield was there.

“Rob and I were sitting at the table and we looked around and said ‘look at all the families that are here, isn’t it great’.

“It wasn’t just a blokes night out, it was family, and that’s what we love.”

Ms Worthington said she is going to miss the daily interactions with customers the most about being involved

in the business, where most conversations stemmed from either Rob’s Tigers or Di’s Cats in the AFL. “Rob and I love our football, and customers would come in and you get stirred up on Monday mornings; you’d have that banter and we’re actually going to miss that,” she said.

“You’d have your discussions throughout the day with various customers...I had the bragging rights last year and I did brag to a few of those Collingwood supporters.

“Because we’ve been here for so long you get to know your customers so well and if they go away on a holiday you remember to ask them about it when they get back, if they haven’t been well you chat to them and it’s actually nice to go around the counter, give them a cuddle and tell them it’s ok.”

“A lot of people say to us ‘you’re going to be sick of being home all the time’, no we won’t,” she said.

“Rob said he’ll probably get in the car and come down here thinking he’s going to work because we’ve done it for so long.

“We just want to be able to throw some things in the car and take off a week at a time and explore Victoria, which other than sporting stadiums or cricket grounds, we haven’t seen a lot of it.”

Taxi teething problems A Automated d booking system still in process of plotting Wangaratta p township

By RYAN MALCOLM WANGARATTA’S local taxi network has responded to community concern, following a move to the nationwide 13 CABS automated booking system six months ago.

The new program aims to streamline the booking process, allowing customers to order a taxi either through a mobile application or by calling and placing a booking through an automated machine.

The option to speak to a human operator remains, according to a 13 CABS spokesperson, however, some locals, including Susan Cassidy, have expressed concern around the challenge of getting real-time updates of a taxi’s whereabouts through the automated system.

In a letter penned to the Wangaratta Chronicle, Ms Cassidy explained her experience booking a taxi through the automated system, when she said she had waited 51 minutes for a taxi on a Wednesday night before deciding to drive to her dinner reservation.

“As I didn’t know this at the time and had no information if there was a delay or a problem with my booking, we were left high and dry.”

A 13 CABS spokesperson said there was no reason why the new automated system would differ from the previous despatch system.

“We understand that when you introduce a new system and a new technology, some people find that difficult, and we don’t discount

those people,” the spokesperson said.

“Rick (longtime Wangaratta Taxis staffer Rick Thewlis) and the guys are going to work as hard as they can to make sure (customers) get the service they want in the form they want it.

“We understand that with new

technology come challenges for some people in the community we’re not abandoning them, we’re not discounting their concerns, but like every company you have to move with the times and increase your technological capacity.”

The spokesperson said incorporating the new automated system across a town the size of Wangaratta could potentially take as many as 12 months to properly ‘plot’ the city.

They said staff were still in the process of manually inserting nicknames for venues and colloquialisms for areas within the township to improve the efficiency of the booking system.

“Six months in and it’s gone well so far, but there’s always more information you can find,” the spokesperson said.

“When a customer from a local area calls in, our system recognises that name and knows where to despatch the cab to, without the customer having to explain at length where they actually are.

“Thankfully we use Google Maps and that makes it a bit easier, but there are still those times, particularly in country towns, where someone might say ‘I want to be picked up under the bridge’ - now that might be a common term within that community, but we have to physically input that into the system so it can do that booking.

“You’d be hoping that within 12 months that would be complete it’s a bit like a new suburb coming along, you have to add that into the system.”

Mini touring car champs decided AFTER five months of competitive racing, the final of the Northeast Radio Control Car Club’s Kysoho Championship was held on Saturday at the Mitchell Avenue track in Wangaratta.

Competition in the Winton Motor Raceway/Hobbies Direct Kysoho Championship series for 1/10 on-road touring cars was as fierce as it comes, with no driver giving an inch amid the possibility of points from second to sixth positions changing on the day.

With awards and trophies for the event on display thanks to the major sponsors, plus the monthly awards from Wangaratta Pet and Hobby, there was a combined value of more than $1100 on offer for the series winners.

The timing and track set-up at Mitchell Avenue is now as good as any racetrack for onroad 1/10 electric cars, while the Kysoho Mk2 on-road cars make for close racing, and are an economical racing class for drivers of all ages.

In Saturday’s 35 degree conditions, tyres were hot and motors were even hotter, so allowing the motors to cool down during the event was critical.

From eight registered starters, only five were able to compete, due to car damage or health.

The day started with seeding, then qualifying for start position, and for the remainder of the day there was action aplenty.

Series winner Doug Anderson was trying to stay car one on the road, but was having trouble as the rest of the field was all over him.

Every driver was averaging 13 or 14 second laps, with the best lap time on the day 12.6 seconds.

With 21 laps within the five minute race time, concentration in the heat took its toll at times.

At the end of a competitive race day, the final results ended the series, with first outright winner Dougy Anderson in front of second outright Russel Begg.

Third outright and first junior was Tyler Lewis, and the best car body prize also went to Russel Begg.

The club’s first-ever championship has attracted lots of interest in recent months, and the club looks forward to supporting future close racing series events at the Mitchell Avenue on-road track.

ONE thousand households will get a new and much larger recycling bin as part of a trial in the rural cities of Wangaratta and Benalla from this month.

NevRwaste, together with the Rural City of Wangaratta and Benalla Rural City Council, are launching the trial to determine whether the new 340-litre recycling bins, which can carry 40 per cent more co-mingled recyclable product, will encourage more recycling and result in less waste going to landfill.

Localities with larger households have been identified to take part in the trial.

Each week, measurements of the general waste bins and the larger recycling bins will be recorded to monitor the percentage of landfill versus recyclable waste.

Each truck load of general waste and recycling from the trial areas will also be weighed.

“The bigger bin option is being trialled because research has shown larger households may experience an overflow of recycling between fortnightly collections,” Rural City of Wangaratta mayor Rozi Parisotto said.

Mind your step with the Australasian Pipit

By IAN DAVIDSON and CHRIS TZAROS THE Australasian Pipit is a well-camouflaged, brown ground-dwelling bird that is often seen walking, running orr taking short flights ahead of a vehicle or when walking along g dirt tracks in mostly cleared grassland paddocks.

They have a somewhat stripy appearance with darkerr brown streaks above and pale creamy white stripes on the eyebrows and below the cheeks.

Underparts are creamy white, spotted and streaked dark on the breast.

Wings and tail are dark brown, with the outermost tail ill feathers being white. Bill and feet are pale pink-grey.

Sexes are similar while young birds are generally paler.

They differ from other similar brown birds inhabiting g grasslands by being larger, 16619cm and having longer tail feathers with prominent whitee edges that are often waggled..

The Australasian Pipit is found in open country, in a

range of habitat types from saltmarshes to dry shrublandss and open woodland clearings. s.

They readily occupy pasture re and croplands, roadsides and d even golf courses.

They are found wherever suitable grassy habitat occurss across Australia, Their diet consists of insects tss and their larvae, as well as seeds and they forage in jerky, darting motion, stopping to perch on low stones or shrubs, wagging their tail up and down.

The Australasian Pipit establish breeding pairs after an elaborate courtship ritual, with males making swooping dives from a height, accompanied by a sweet trilling song.

The nest is a depression in the ground, sometimes sheltered by a grass tussock, stone or piece of wood, and lined with grasses and hairs.

The female incubates three

top four greyish eggs with grey-brown flecks and feeds the young alone.

Locally, these birds are typically found walking around on the ground or foraging with a bobbing gait or perched on fenceposts or tree stumps.

They are generally sedentary in our region, but they are mostly observed in spring when they are most active with courting displays and breeding.

Cycling for cancer care FAMILIES are being encouraged to get on their bikes for the Jayco Albury Wodonga Lake Hume Cycle Challenge this Sunday, with children under 12 set to ride for free.

Primary-school aged children taking part in the 15km Kiewa River Family Ride will have their fee waived, while all other funds raised through the 80km Bethanga Beast, 65km Tangambalanga-Sandy Creek Loop and 40km Tallangatta Rail Trail Tour will go towards

the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.

Having been diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago, Geoff Slocomb is set to complete the 15km ride with granddaughters Amelia, 13, and Stella, 11, and said he was looking forward to supporting the cancer centre which helped saved his life.

“I first rode the cycle challenge in 2016 and it’s a great event for family and friends,” he said.

Chook auction set for return WANGARATTA will be the centre of the poultry world on Sunday, March 19 when up to 400 pens of birds are placed on the auction block at the Wangaratta Poultry Club shed at the showgrounds.

Metry Auctions, one of Australia’s leading poultry auctioneers, is organising the event with Braham Metry holding the gavel on the day.

The auction starting at 11am will feature a choice of purebred poultry and point of laying hens from many of the leading breeders from southern NSW and Victoria with buyers expected from around the state including Melbourne.

Penning will take place from 8am to 10am with a maximum of 400 pens averaging three birds a pen, plus poultry equipment up for sale.

“We are professional poultry auctioneers and valuers and before COVID-19 we would sell around 100,000 birds a year at three locations,” Braham Metry from Metry Auctions said.

“We just held a successful auction at Euroa and are looking forward to Wangaratta next.

“We hope to get back to having two sales a year there.”

“We sell anything from the average cross-breed right up to the higher

end show birds.

“Anything can turn up.”

Mr Metry said birds could range in price from $2 upwards with prices of $300 to $400 common for the show birds.

He said there was big demand at present for roosters as well as Muscovy drakes.

There will also be a dispersal flock of SilverLaced Wyandottes chooks offered.

Catering on the day will be provided by Wangaratta Poultry Club and everyone is welcome.

Aquathon raises $16,600 for Big Brothers Big Sisters AN aquathon held at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre last Sunday raised more than $16,600 for Wangaratta’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

The success of the day has sparked plans for a follow-up next year, after 100 keen competitors filled all categories of Sunday’s event, and a crowd gathered to cheer them on.

Funds raised through registration, sponsorship, donations, food sales, merchandising and a raffle on the day will be put to good use in supporting the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in the rural city.

“We are enormously grateful for the generous sponsorship of this event from Alpine Truss Pty Ltd, along with the Rural City of Wangaratta, the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre, and organisations like Encompass Electrical, North East Float and Motion, Salt of the Earth and Black Venom Clothing,” Bec Lanham, one of the event coordinators, said.

“There were also more than 50 volunteers who pitched in and did a wonderful job.”

The aquathon offered a chance to hear about the work BBBS has been doing for the last 12 months to connect young people to mentors.

In the same vein, Bec said Sunday’s aquathon was a fantastic way to bring community members together to support each other as they reached for their goals in the event’s various categories.

“Whether you were one of the more seasoned Marlin, a young and enthusiastic Goldfish, or a ‘give it all you’ve got’ Clownfish, the vibe was upbeat and enthusiastic,” she said.

Bec said the support offered through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program was echoed by one of the highlights of the day: the performance of the aquathon’s youngest competitor, Arlo Hyde.

The four-year-old took part in the Goldfish event (a 500m run and 50m swim, followed by a final lap of the 500m course).

“Arlo’s persistence and commitment could not be questioned, but his energy ebbed in the last couple of hundred metres,” Bec said.

“However, the crowd rallied to cheer him home.

“A few Goldfish who had already finished ran back out onto the track to encourage Arlo and join him on the run to the finish, spurring him on to cross line, to cheers and clapping from all who watched.

“It was a moment for all to remember.”

1000km bike ride for charity

A DEDICATED team of 29 riders along with six support personnel will head off on a seven-day 1000km bike ride starting in Wangaratta on Saturday, March 18.

Rocan, a not-for-profit charity has been hosting bike rides like this for 20 years and their aim is to provide relief to cancer patients and their families, raising money towards specific research into ovarian cancer and early screening tests.

One of the support team members on the ride, Damien Hynes, said their current

project was to help for the creation of an accommodation and wellness centre for patients, their families and their carers in Melbourne.

“We are looking at working in with a like-minded charity - construction of a new accommodation centre in Flemington road near relevant hospitals,” he said.

“The new state of the art facility will be within walking distance of major cancer hospitals in Melbourne.”

“It is relevant to country people who require extended accommodation for treatment.”

Last year the bike ride raised more than $80,000.

The bike ride will travel from Wangaratta to Rutherglen on Saturday, March 18; Rutherglen to Albury on Sunday, March 19; Albury to Old Tallangatta back to Albury on Monday, March 20; Albury to Bright on Tuesday, March 21; Bright to Harrietville to Porpunkah to Wandiligong and back to Bright on Wednesday March 22; Bright to Wangaratta on Thursday, March 23; Wangaratta to Devenish to Goorambat back to Wangaratta on Friday March 24.

SES volunteers honoured following Bright water rescue TWELVE volunteers from the Bright SES unit received a rare ‘Commendation for Service Award’ last week for the rescue of a 16-year-old on January 7, who had been swept over a low weir dam into swift water during flood conditions at Bright Centennial Park.

The volunteers were led by crew leader Marcus Warner and incident agency commander (IAC) Graham Gales, and included crew members Trina Friend, James Sadgrove,

Jon Miller, Gabrielle Stratton, Paul Watson, Russell Maunder, Dermot Meany and Jarrod Vanderree.

Two other members, Gordon Thomas and Roy Kennedy, also coordinated resources for the response from the local headquarters .

The citation identified that the volunteers “displayed exceptional leadership, rescue principles, and safety considerations during the improvised rescue, in what was a confronting event”.

Moira Shire Council sacked

MOIRA Shire Council has been sacked in the wake of a damning independent inquiry which found a litany of governance failures, including events that led to the murder of a senior manager.

Local Government Minister Melissa Horne tabled the independent report and its “deeply concerning” findings in parliament on Tuesday and accepted its recommendation to dismiss the council entirely and appoint an interim administrator for three months.

Minister Horne said an ongoing panel of administrators will follow the interim appointment and will be charged

with addressing the “serious issues” identified in the report so that elections can be held at Moira Shire in 2028.

The inquiry by commissioners Frances O’Brien KC and John Tanner AM, found that governance had deteriorated to a level that council “can no longer effectively carry out its responsibilites in accordance with the Local Government Act”.

The report found council had failed to manage the performance of the CEO and “council and its administration failed to take necessary action to ensure the health and safety of employees in the

council’s depots and other outdoor locations.”

Commissioners noted the events leading up to the tragic murder of Rick Devlin, Moira Shire Council manager of operations by employee Andrew Paterson on August 5, 2021.

They said Mr Paterson was set-up by his co-workers at a council depot and stood down in November 2019 following a false allegation of the theft of a small quantity of kerosene used to clean tar from staff ’s shoes, clothes and their car.

They said Mr Paterson did not return to work and was on WorkCover and requested a voluntary redundancy pack-

age 15 months prior to Mr Devlin’s murder.

“Such requests were not uncommon and often approved, but Mr Paterson’s request was rejected out of hand,” the report said.

“Had these events not occurred, it is questionable whether the subsequent course of events would have transpired.

“The works depot was the epicentre of a bitterly divided workforce riven by victimisation, threats, bullying, harassment, accusation and counter accusation.

“It was not the only depot or outdoors work site to suffer

from these behaviours but it was the setting in which the factors and events leading to Mr Devlin’s death played out without any constructive intervention by council administration.”

The inquiry found council and its administration’s failure to meet their obligations to provide and maintain a safe place of work had been “very damaging”, with council’s Workers Compensation claims predicted to increase from $130,000 in 2020-21 to $811,000 in 2021-22 and to $2.25 million in 2023-24.

The inquiry also found the actions of the council and its administration “in transfer-

ring asbestos contaminated waste to the Tungamah and Strathmerton waste stations which were not licensed to receive it constituted serious misconduct putting council staff, contractors and residents at potential risk of exposure to asbestos”.

The inquiry also cited council and its administration’s “mismanagement” of two major capital works, their failure to implementation approved flood mitigation measures at Numurkah, their “failure” to provide adequate community representation, and “serious mismanagement of procurement”.

Classic car tour coming to Bright and Mt Hotham A FOUR-day motoring festival, the Targa Classica, will be winding its way up the Great Alpine Road in late March, visiting Bright and Mount Hotham.

In its fifth year in Australia, the Targa Classica 2023 has attracted 220 competitors from all over Australia and NZ. Vintage classics join modern supercars to take on the challenge as they wind their way to top of the mountain in the leadup to the Australian Grand Prix.

Drivers can compete in two categories: the Classica Trofeo, classic cars pre-1976; and the Legend Trofeo, classic cars post1976 to modern.

Each category will follow the same course and take in the same stages.

The event covers around

1000kms over four days and involves 70-80 competition stages.

On March 28, the classic cars will travel from Healesville, through Myrtleford, and stop at Bright from 3-5pm at Ireland Street.

They will then travel to Mount Hotham, where the cars will be on display in the Corral carpark, and spectators can view the vehicles and meet the competitors.

Andrew Lawson, director of Targa Classica, said Mount Hotham’s winding roads are the perfect backdrop for the event.

“The village will be abuzz with excitement and fun, the street lined with more than 100 cars from 1924 to now,” he said.

Falls Creek access by April 25

FALLS Creek has confirmed the winter season will be business as usual with public access to the resort direct from Mt Beauty opening by April 25.

After what has been a tough summer, with a landslide cutting off the main access to Falls Creek Village via the Bogong High Plains Road in October, authorities have confirmed that there will be single lane access

well in time for the winter season and two lanes will be open by the peak season in late June.

The announcement this week follows the commitment from Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) that the access road will be open between Mount Beauty and Falls Creek by April 25 so pre-season preparations can commence.

Since taking over the

management of the landslip recovery works Major Road Projects Victoria has carefully assessed the situation and have advised that they are now confident that it will be able to provide at least a single lane of access to through traffic by April 25, ahead of winter.

Falls Creek chief operating officer, Stuart Smythe, said the news was exciting after what had been a “really

NEW-GROWTH FORESTER SHOWS OFF DEEP-ROOTED CHOPS

■ RELIABLE AS EVER: The latest Forester SUV has not wandered far from the well-worn wagon trail.

By DEREK OGDEN THE Subaru Forester came to life in 1997 as a barebones, no-nonsense crossover vehicle ready to take on the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Using the Impreza platform, but built in the style of a station wagon, with a taller stance, higher hip-point seating and all-wheel drive, over the years it has gained in size, sophistication and popularity, becoming a top seller.

A late addition to the small SUV segment a quarter of a century ago, the Forester, along the way, has boasted some of the Japanese automobile manufacturer’s most advanced driving aids and safety systems.

The subject of some minor design upgrades in 2022, the MY23 range opens at $37,890, plus on-road costs for the 2.5i petrol and peaks with the Hybrid S at $49,340.

Price increases range from $1900 to $2150, which Subaru Australia claims are due to production and logistic costs.

The MY23 model stays much the same except for minor specification changes, with the high-spec Forester 2.5i Sport, 2.5i-S (the test vehicle) and Hybrid S all getting an auto-dimming rear-view mirror as standard.

The outgoing Dark Blue Pearl exterior paint option has been replaced by Sapphire Blue Pearl.

All Forester variants now include Lane Centring Function, Lane Departure Prevention and Autonomous Emergency Steering, designed to avoid frontal collisions, lane drifting and low speed impacts.

It can ‘lock on’ to vehicles directly in front and, when used together with Adaptive Cruise Control, can slow, stop and accelerate to maintain a safe driving distance.

It also recognises pedestrians, motorcycles and cyclists within its field of vision.

Depending on conditions, the Pre-Collision Braking System can help to minimise impact and damage.

If the speed is less than 30 km/h, the car can be brought to a complete stop before impact.

Then there’s the Driver Monitoring System that uses a camera to monitor the driver for signs of fatigue or distraction and warns them if it detects that the driver is not focused or keeping eyes on the road ahead.

It also features advanced temperature adjustment, allowing the driver to have complete control of the temperature through simple hand gestures.

The 2023 Subaru Forester has a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty with three or five-year servicing schemes, costing $1277.90 and $2422.38, respectively.

STYLING The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Unlike many of its younger rivals, the latest Forester has eschewed modern design trends with a somewhat staid station wagon-like appearance.

And, with misty-eyed memories and massive sales, that is how the fans, and maker, like it.

INTERIOR The Forester is a spacious five-seater with the 2.5i-S perches clad in qual-

ity leather upholstery.

Twin cup holders are centred between driver and front seat passenger.

A large comfortable armrest is home to a storage area with USB ports.

Rear passengers are treated to spacious surroundings thanks to the Forester’s traditional station wagon styling.

Boot space also takes advantage of the vehicle’s square old-world character.

There is 498 litres with all seats up and 1704 litres with rear two seat backs folded.

There is room under the floor for a full-size spare wheel - an off-road bonus.

SAFETY ANCAP awarded the Subaru Forester a five-star safety score in 2019, with the latest list of standard safety equipment on all models including autonomous emergency braking and steering, blindspot monitoring, rear crosstraffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane centring and adaptive cruise control.

As mentioned above, all but the base 2.5i come standard with a facial recognition camera to detect driver drowsiness or distraction, as well as rear autonomous emergency braking.

INFOTAINMENT The MY23 model has maintained a full house of information displaying fixtures and fittings of former Foresters.

With three sets of screens, it does veer on the side of overcapitalisation.

Main centre of infotainment focuses on a centredash mounted 8-inch screen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, integrated satellite navigation, and AM / FM / DAB+ radio, the last from an eight-speaker harman / kardon sound system.

DRIVING Fire up the engine and the cabin is filled with the signature sound of the 2.5 Subaru horizontally opposed unit some might find it intrusive - Boxer fans not so.

There’s no mistaking the note through the whole rev range, with responsive action to the accelerator pedal.

All Foresters run on 91RON regular unleaded fuel, with non-hybrid combined consumption of 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres.

The test car recorded 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the daily city commute and 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres when cut free on the open road.

All-wheel drive has the Forester steady and reliable on bitumen business, while ventilated discs all round maintain a high level of efficiency when called on in spirited driving.

Off road going can be tamed by X-Mode, a system that has two modes - Snow / Dirt and Deep Snow / Mud each yielding improved grip

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The MY23 non-hybrid models are powered by the same naturally aspirated 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine putting out 136 kW peak power and 239 Nm of torque.

Mated with a continuously variable automatic transmission, power is distributed permanently through all four wheels.

SUMMARY Subaru Australia claims 97 per cent of Foresters sold in the past 10 years are still on the road today, so that says a lot about the pedigree of the vehicle.

The addition of hybrid technology, plus the promise of turbo power, are bound to keep Forester to the fore-

front of responsible driving.

Wednesday morning attracted a small number of players due to cooler and wet weather.

Terry Wilson defeated Lauren Kazenwadel 26/13 in a game of ricochet during which Lauren achieved a 25 yard roquet and played better than the score indicated.

Wednesday evening saw nine members play in nice cool conditions until it was dark.

At present contractors are working on installing drainage under court one with funding obtained from grants.

Playing times are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 8:30am and Wednesday (Twilight) at 6pm.

Ricochet will commence at 7:30am each Wednesday until further notice.

Visitors are welcome.

TUESDAY, March 7 Full Moon Walk, Everton Station to Everton and back, by moonlight.

Sting sang “Giant steps are what we took walking under the moon”.

21 delighted club members ambled along a short section of the Murray to Mountains Rail covering just over 7kms.

The conditions were great for a 6:30pm start from the old station building, being warm with a very slight breeze.

Cecily led a very social mob into Everton village where we enjoyed excellent salad rolls and carrot cake prepared at the store.

Pat’s now internationally famous cuppa box was present to supply sufficient moisture to the walkers who trudged back to their cars in full glorious lunar luminescence.

An easy to medium loop walk of about 7km from the Spring Creek Picnic Area, taking in the sawmill kiln ruins and the ruins of the Tramway Braking Station.

Wangaratta double in mid-week finals

A1: WANGARATTA claimed back-to-back mid-week pennant titles with a nail-biting win over YMGCR at Wodonga in Tuesday’s grand final.

In what has become the norm over the last two season’s, the two sides went shot for shot for the entire game with the leading margin for either team always in single figures.

Wangaratta looked to have the advantage late in the game when they led by as many as eight shots but YMGCR reduced the margin to one shot with three ends to play.

Ian Brimblecombe, Laurie and Barb McDonald and Leon Quartermain (16-14) then scored two shots on their last end to push the margin to three in Wangaratta’s favor before Trevor Selwood, Jodie Fruend, Greg McDonald, and Graeme Smith (19-20) dropped a single shot on their last end.

Maurie Braden, Chris Randell, Phil Davern, and Lorna Martinelli (20-20) played the last end with a two shot advantage and didn’t have to play the last bowl with YMGCR only holding one shot.

Wangaratta will represent the O&M at the State Pennant Finals in Moama on May 8 and 9.

Dederang dominated the first half of the match as they pushed the margin out to 25 shots.

Wangaratta began to slowly reduce the margin but things still looked grim before a late surge

saw them level the scores before hitting the front for the first time in the game, and then managed to hang on to clinch a memorable victory.

Bev Hogan, Ron McAuliffe, Gary King, and Heather Coyle (24-13) were big winners for Wangaratta, while Gary Fenlon, Peter Selwood, Gayle King, and Steve Bihun were down 10 to nil

before a big comeback saw them win (20-14).

Gary Chambers, Terry Corrigan, Lyn Kahlefeldt and Chris Bell (12-26) suffered a loss, but managed to limit the margin in the second half to help the overall cause.

Plenty of action at Avian Park for cup day

By WILLSON MACK THE always popular Wangaratta Trotters and Pacers Cup will be run this Sunday at Avian Park.

The Wangaratta Harness Club will be hosting a nine race card with gates opening at 5pm with the first race scheduled for 5:45pm.

Entry will be free for all with plenty of entertainment on offer for all families so the club encourages spectators to bring a chair and picnic rug to sit along the fence and enjoy all the action.

DJ Steve Bowen will be on deck to entertain the crowd, while there will be a $1000 sweep on the Pacing Cup and face painting for the kids.

Bar facilities will run as normal and there will be a variety of foods available including pizza, curries, chips, hotdogs, soft serve ice cream, coffee etc.

Tote and bookmaker services will be available but will be limited to cash only.

BYO alcohol will not be permitted.

A number of locals will attack the cups with Chiltern’s Peter Romero bring a trio to the feature event with Dustonthebeach (R1), Sonic Express (R4) and Sheetweb Weaver (R6) all vying for victory.

Wangaratta’s Sharon Hahne will have Olly Odd Potts run in race two, while Mark Buckingham will be hopinh Tara Leeann, owned by the Carey’s, can claim winning honours in race three.

Chiltern trainers Leigh Shannon, Wayne Anderson and Barry Healey will also bring runners of their own to Wangaratta/ Shannon’s Oktolove will try his hand in race four, Anderson’s The Golden Cross will feature in race seven and Healey’s Barwen Storm will take his place in race seven.

In the Trotters Cup, Benji Hall and Blue Coman are sharing early favourtism at $3, while in the Pacing Cup Boy From Bondi has been labelled the $2.70 favourite.

Round one challenge for new-look Devils

Here come the Lady Devils

AFTER months of preparation and anticipation, the Wangaratta Devils division one women are just days away from taking on the 2023 Albury Wodonga Football Association, with their round one match set to be played at South Wangaratta against Cobram.

Coach Dan Kelly said the preseason was hard work, but is sure to hold the squad in good stead throughout the year.

“We’ve had a really good preseason, it’s been pretty intense, but the training sessions, the numbers and the quality we’ve had have been really good, and I think they’re just itching to kick off round one now,” he said.

“I’ve had some good feedback already from some of the girls and some of the girls’ parents because we’ve got a few youngsters in there.

“It’s pretty easy when you’ve got really good girls like the bunch I’ve got this year, it makes the job so much easier.

“Everyone’s getting on, there’re no massive characters and there are no shy people, everyone are mates.

“It’s a really good group to have and it’s a really good group to work with.”

Kelly said numbers were incredibly positive, with young players ready to step up alongside some of the best the club has seen in recent years.

“We’ve got some returning players this year, some of the older girls have come back in, and the youngsters have looked up to them or were even coached by the girls in their junior group,” he said.

“We’ve got Beth Cope, she doesn’t do much talking loudly but the way she plays the game just shows she’s a real leader.

“If she starts fiery, everyone else around her picks up.

“Bianca Mulqueen has come back, she’s a prolific goal scorer.

“We’ve got some real quality through the middle with experience, with Sarah Morris up top.

“I’m really interested to see the juniors, we’ve got some great juniors this year like Reese Chuck, she’s been on fire from the training sessions.”

In front of their home crowd on their home ground, the Lady Devils will look to take a positive step forward in the 2023 season, angling for victory over Cobram.

“I think, when it comes to Sunday and if it was going to be a close game and maybe we pip them, they can see we pipped them because of the hard work we put into preseason has come to fruition,” Kelly said.

“When you’re in a winning environment, you just want to keep doing the same things because repetition is very important in soccer.

“The Wangaratta ladies have had a great previous couple of seasons, they’ve been up in the grand final and it’s definitely time again that we get back there this year with the squad we’ve got, if we can stick together and grind results out.”

The senior women kick off their 2023 campaign on Sunday from 11.20am at South Wangaratta Recreation Reserve.

WANGARATTA City will kick off their 2023 campaign with a clash against the highly touted Cobram at South Wangaratta Reserve on Sunday.

Cobram were one of the standout teams in 2022, finishing the year in the top three before bowing out of the finals in the semis.

Wangaratta City coach Raff Molinaro said he’s expecting a tough challenge.

“I definitely think Cobram will be strong again,” Molinaro said.

“They’ve brought in some players but have also lost some but I think they’ll be a top three side again this year and continue to be strong so it’ll be a good test.

“Being at home will be a good way to start the year and also show everyone our fresh faces who will hopefully be competitive against Cobram.”

Former players Jaxon Osmotherly, Ryan Van Der Steeg and Rahul Pahina have returned to the club but Molinaro admits he isn’t sure how his side will shape up.

“I’m not really sure what to expect but any result against Cobram gives us a bit of a starting point,” he said.

“We’ve had three or four good practice matches and intra clubs so everyone is in good condition but we haven’t had a full strength side on the park together in any of those.

“We’ve been playing around with a few different structures that will allow us to play more from the back,” Molinaro said.

“We want to take control of possession as much as we can because

back when I played, the more we had control of the ball the easier it becaome to move forward and control the game.

“Our fitness has also been a big part of pre-season so hopefully we can run out a full 90 minute game.”

The senior men’s round one clash against the Roar starts at 3pm.

“On paper I’m hoping we will field a strong side with a good balance between young guys and senior players.”

The Devils will no doubt be a new look side under Molinaro as he takes the reigns from star coach Daniel Vasilevski.

Popular twilight tennis wraps up

By DAVID GODKIN THE very popular mixed team twilight competition finished this week for the 2022-23 season and was declared by all participants another success.

The coordinators Steve Russell and Sean Ablezaj agreed saying “We’ve had a ball!”

“We love seeing the courts in use with lots of players out there enjoying themselves,” Sean said.

This was the first twilight competition to go right through without lockdown interruptions since 2020.

Of course there were the usual interruptions for rain delays and the occasional frantic phone calls to find replacement players who

couldn’t play, but both the Monday and Tuesday teams have had good tennis and lots of social fun.

Results: Every team played on Monday and Tuesday as a sort of final.

1 versus 2, 3 versus 4 etc.

On Monday the Premier Panels team were the premier team with a strong win over the Worklocker team.

However, on Tuesday night the grand final was extremely tight between the Flynns team and the Garry Nash & co team.

At the end of the normal sets the teams were 24 games all so a super 10-point tiebreak was played under lights in front of the crowd who had gathered for the end of play barbeque.

The tie-break was won by Flynn’s Michelle Flynn and Joe Allan 10-8 over Mark Brown and Wendy Hogan.

Most of the other matches played were also very close in games.

A very even and fitting end to the competition.

Club secretary Michael Falkenberg spoke to the assembled players and supporters, after thanking Sean and Steve for their contributions.

“This sort of midweek twilight competition is very important to the club and tennis generally as it encourages more women to engage in the sport,” Falkenberg said.

“The club had a very successful ANA tournament in January with

record high participant numbers and the club did very well financially.

“The club is now going to examine ways to focus on ways of making tennis relevant to the current times.

“We need to encourage more family focused nights and perhaps ladies only nights.”

He encouraged the current twilight players to plan ahead and recruit for next season.

“There are many lapsed players out there and we need to entice them back into the sport again in some way,” Falkenberg saud.

“We have a wonderful community resource here in Merriwa Park and we need to encourage more usage.”

Colts poised for thrilling finish to WDCA season CITY Colts are on the precipice of clinching a stunning win over Delatite when the two sides conclude their season this weekend at Lords Reserve in Mansfield.

Delatite will resume their innings at 2/26, chasing the Colts’ total of 118.

The Colts were bowled out within 59 overs last weekend, but two early wickets from skipper Kent Braden have the tables even heading into the final day of play for the two sides’ season.

Braden said the match was on a knife’s edge and either team could take the win.

“We obviously didn’t make as

many runs as we would’ve liked but taking two late wickets puts us in a position where we’re in with a shot,” he said.

“The scorecard probably sums (our season) up.

“Tyler (Nanson) wafted at one outside off stump, me and Josh (Nanson) had a good partnership and then Josh went a bit hard at one.

“I got strangled down leg side, and it just went from there.

“They bowled really well and strangled us a bit, so it was tough going, but we would’ve liked another 30 or 40 on the board, that’s for sure.”

Braden said his bowlers and fielders had to be on from the first delivery last weekend, and they’ll have to do it again tomorrow if the Colts are to secure a victory.

“The aim was to make them play as much as possible, it’s a nasty time to bat - I think they had 14 overs, they’d spent the majority of the day in the field and it’s a tough time,” he said.

“We probably didn’t make them play as much as I would’ve liked but

in the end we got it right towards the back end and put a bit of pressure on them and hopefully we can carry that on in this weekend.

“There’s every chance it could go down to the wire.

“They’ve got some good bats, and we’re going to have to bowl extremely well and field well, but if we can do that I think we’re in with a massive chance.

“It would be a good way to finish the season off.”

Delatite will resume at 2/26 tomorrow from 1pm at Lords Reserve in Mansfield, needing a further 93 runs with eight wickets in hand for victory over City Colts.

“The semi-final loss to them last season still hurts so we definitely want to get one back.”

Yarrawonga Mulwala have enjoyed a solid season without dominating, sitting in third with a six-wins, five losses record.

But Clarke believes his side is well placed to give finals a shakeup.

“We’ve got our 12 players settled and we feel like we haven’t fired on all cylinders in any game this season so there’s plenty of improvement there,” he said.

“We definitely feel like if things go our way we have plenty of match winners there that can win finals.

“We’re confident that on our day we can beat anyone.”

In other matches, Delatite will be looking to chase down City Colts’ 118, Wangaratta Magpies will be hoping to defend their 223 against Beechworth and Benalla will need to make 163 to beat Ovens Valley United.

Finals fever across junior cricket AS summer comes to an end, it means crunch time has come for all junior cricketers in the Wangaratta and Distract Cricket Association, with finals set to be played across the three junior divisions.

In the under 12s, last weekend’s two division champions will face off tomorrow for the Bill Daniel Shield and the glory of being the undisputed champions of their age group, with City Colts White and Yarrawonga Mulwala Bulls going toe to toe at Wareena Park.

The semi-finals get underway in the under 14 and under 16 competitions, with Saturday-Sunday games scheduled on turf decks across the region.

Rovers United Bruck are well represented in the under 14 semi-finals, with the

Top speedway action brings a fleet of champions

By DEAN THOMPSON THIS Saturday and Sunday from 5pm each evening, Wangaratta City Raceway will rock along to some of the best action you can expect to see this summer.

More than 60 competitors will be out to try and claim the Standard Saloon state number one plate from Jacob Vuillermin, while 20 competitors will try to secure the ‘W’ over the new Victorian Production Sedan champion Brendan Harper in the North East Nationals.

Vuillermin, from the Latrobe Valley, will have his hands full with another amazing title field for his Victorian Speedway Council Standard Saloon category that includes Chiltern resident Warrick Howie, just one of the favourites that has nominated.

There are so many of the state’s best competitors, that some of them just won’t qualify for the main event on Sunday.

Battling it out on water and land

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN WEEKENDS don’t get much busier than for Wangaratta’s multi-sport wonder Declan O’Sullivan, who will be tackling some of the state’s best in both swimming and Little Athletics from today through to Sunday.

Declan, 16, will be participating in the under 16 50m freestyle this morning in day one of the State Age Long Course Swimming Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, before heading across the road and changing the swim cap for spikes on Saturday and Sunday, competing in the Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships.

Declan, who had achieved a similar feat competing at the Country Long Course Championships and the Wangaratta Carnival on the same day in January, said it’s a busy schedule to keep up with, especially as training heats up before the big events.

“It’s pretty tough, I’ve got to figure out what’s on every weekend and plan ahead, if there’s a double up I’ve got to decide what I want to do,” he said.

“I don’t have a lot of free time, I make sure I use every day wisely, if I have an early training with swimming I know I need to go to bed early, get my stuff ready early so I can just be ready to go out the door.

“After doing it for a while I’ve

With a big cash pool up for grabs for the Speedway Sedans Australia governed Production Sedans, competitors from New South Wales, Canberra, and across Victoria have nominated to compete with Wangaratta members Raymond Ussher, Chris Lack, Michael Sayers, Tom Barnard, Chris Fitzgerald, Leighton Evans and Harper keen to keep the cash in house.

Fitzgerald has been strong in heat racing and had some bad luck in the finals, watch to see if his luck changes this weekend.

They will compete with the likes of Trevor Mills from Corowa and Stephen Laidlaw, both two times Australian champions, Jacob Mills from Howlong a one-time national

champion, Scott Hawkins, Stuey Robinson, who just won last week in Horsham, Craig and Damien McAllister from the Goulburn New South Wales area, Danny Harrison, Jack Murphy and Rodney Anderson all from New South Wales.

Entry fee to enjoy the racing across two days is $50 per adult, $40 for aged and disabled concession, $20 for kids aged six through to 16, children under six free and a family ticket is $120 for two adults and two kids over the age of six.

One day passes are half the listed price.

The gates to the public open from 2pm and racing begins from 5pm.

Club champions crowned

THE Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club junior and senior club championships were held over the past two weekends with some epic games being played.

The under 12 girls singles was taken out by Tessa Koop, Tessa’s forehand passing shot won many a point to help secure the win, but equally Alice Rendell had some shots of her own but just missed on a couple of vital points to end the day as runner up.

Nick Liddell was successful in winning the boys under 10 grade against a hard hitting Sam Lewis.

In the under 12s it was Archie Knobel’s turn to step up and take the serve and serve he did as he won his singles grade against runner up Reegan Monk.

It was a hard hitting affair in the boys under 14s with Nathan Costa and Leo Sammon going at each other with some long rallies.

In the end Nathan edged ahead to win in a close match.

The girls 14 singles was won by Emily Liddell.

Emily did not have it her own way though as Isabelle McMahon pulled out a few of her own tricks, but not when needed most to go down in a close one.

The under 16 singles was a win for another Liddell but this time it was Chloe who stepped up to hit the winning smash and take the title against an equally hard-hitting opponent in Matilda Dean.

The under 16 boys singles final was the last to be played on Saturday morning and what a match it turned out to be with one break of serve being enough to decide the match.

Cashen Monk won the title 6-3 from Lucas Alexander.

The men’s seniors were next up with a father/son battle with the elder statesman in Matt taking on Sam to decide who would hold the trophy aloft.

Sam started with all guns blazing and within a blink of the eye he had won the first set 6/1.

Matt turned the game around somewhat but it ended up being a nearly set as Sam took the second in a tiebreaker 7/6.

A great match was had but in the end it came down to some big serving and hitting from Sam who seems to

The ladies singles was a tough three setter with Michelle Flynn taking on Mandy Allen.

The match was played with many a rally and each player had a one a set a

piece 6/3 with not many easy points being granted to either player.

With the game score sitting at 5/5 in the third it was time for some change of tactics with a drop shot by Michelle for a winner and then a lob by Mandy for another.

It came down to a fitting tiebreaker to end the match with Michelle taking out the title.

This game will go down as one of the finer exhibitions of tennis held during club championships.

The next match featured

doubles final against Matt and Joe Allen.

The combination of Kevin and Sam seemed to work well in the first set as they won it 6/2 with Kevin playing the backhand side of the court to perfection and then Sam would take over to hit a winning forehand.

Not to be outdone Matt and Joe regrouped and at one stage held a 4/1 lead in the second set.

At change of ends Sam and Kevin changed up there match by hitting the ball deep and keeping Joe and Matt from the net.

This tactic seemed to pay dividends as they won the second set 7/5 and the title.

The ladies doubles final saw Georgia Allen and Beth Cope taking on Mandy Allen and Michelle Flynn.

Georgia and Beth started off well but just could not put a stop to the ball returning off the racquet of both Mandy and Michelle.

By days end it was a 6/2, 6/1 victory to Mandy and Michelle.

The combination of John Brunner and Michelle Hill was too strong in the mixed doubles final as they won the day with a 6/2, 6/0 victory over Sam and Mandy Allen.

John and Michelle were too consistent in the rallies for the hard hitting of Sam and the deft lob of Mandy.

The B grade men’s singles and doubles were played in the aggregate style with Lachie Canning taking out the singles from Colin Mckay.

Tom Gerrish and Russell Canning fought out the minor placings.

The doubles was won by Colin Mckay and Tom Gerrish in two tightly contested sets which were both won 8/6.

The combinations of Lachie/Russell Canning and Geoff Davidson/Pat Flynn could not quite get over the line but a great day was had with some fine commentary under the old oak tree at day’s end.

“We haven’t played them in a while but since then I’ve heard he’s in pretty good form.

“He’ll go pretty hard so hopefully he’ll give us a few chances so we’ll have to be ready for them.

“We’ve got a few different plans

for him but we’re just going to have to be disciplined with the ball.”

Clarke said a win against the ladder leaders would be a massive boost ahead of finals.

“Any win at the back end of the season is crucial for confidence,” he said.

“Beating Rovers on their home ground would be massive ahead of finals.
