They join the Australian Labor Party’s candidate and Buffalo River resident Zuvele Leschen who was first to officially nominate, and the Greens’ first timer Zoe Kromar.

their intention to nominate but yet to register are Nationals’ incumbent member Tim McCurdy, and Liberal Democrats’ Julian Fidge.

Nominations for registered political party endorsed candidates close 12 noon tomorrow, with the cut off for independents at 12 noon on Friday, followed by the ballot draw at 1pm.

It’s the first time

nominating for the Freedom Party’s Mr Bugge, who has lived in Cobram most of his life and works as an excavator and truck driver after spending a decade as a baker.

“I’m just a run of the mill bloke trying to stand up for people’s freedoms and rights like farmers who have been decimated by government policy,” Mr Bugge said.

“I’ve been standing up

for farmers in the Murray Darling basin and I have definitely been against the plans and the destruction on the farmers.

“I will be standing for the freedoms that were taken away due to COVID and I will definitely be standing against lockdowns and mandates.

“Being a country boy, I will be standing up for the freedoms and rights in

relation to camping, fishing and hunting.”

Early voting for the election is from November 14-25 and election day is on November 26.

As of yesterday there were 34 people who have nominated for the upper house seat of Northern Victoria, including incumbents ALP’s Jaclyn Symes, and Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party’s Tania Maxwell.

Suspended driver fined for dangerous crash A NORTH East man who failed to adequately give way at Tarrawingee while driving with his licence suspended has expressed his remorse, after two victims in their 90s were hospitalised following a collision last year.

Facing Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court yesterday, the defendant in his 50s, pleaded guilty to charges of failing to give way and drive while suspended.

The court heard the man

had attempted to merge onto the Great Alpine Road from Beechworth Road on the morning of August 19, forcing an eastbound vehicle into a table drain.

The defendant approached police upon their arrival, and informed them he had been driving while unlicenced.

His wife and young child were also in the vehicle, which the accused man said he had been driving to the

Royal Children’s Hospital after his wife expressed she was too tired to drive.

Both victims in the other vehicle were treated for minor injuries at Northeast Health Wangaratta and later discharged.

Constable Victoria Lennon said the accused had been cooperative with police, telling officers during a formal interview “I’m not going to piss in your pocket, I’m unlicenced, I feel really bad about it”.

Police officers at the time stated the victims had been lucky they had been driving in the town’s 60kph zone at the time of the collision, speculating a crash at higher speed may well have had serious consequences.

Defence counsel Sally Wilson said her client had previously been sentenced to an 18 month corrections order earlier this year, with the man’s most recent matter not included in a consoli-

dated summary due to a lack of information forthcoming from police.

She said despite her client claiming he had indeed stopped at the intersection, it was clear he had failed to see the oncoming traffic.

Judicial Registrar Allison Vaughn noted the accused had exhibited significant remorse in the immediate aftermath of the crash, remorse the accused again reiterated to the court while

appearing via WebeX. However, she noted his extensive driving history could be problematic if he returned to court in the future.

“Quite frankly with your history if you keep coming back with these matters you are a prospect for imprisonment,” she said.

She convicted and fined the man $500, noting the matter should have been part of a consolidated plea heard in May.

City service to mark 104 years since Armistice A SERVICE marking the 104th anniversary of the Armistice, ending hostilities in World War I, will be held at the Wangaratta Cenotaph starting at 10.40am this Friday.

The Remembrance Day service, which will include a catafalque party, will enable local people to remember the sacrifices made during all wars and conflicts since.

Dignitaries will be present for the commemoration including state MP for Northern Victoria Tania Maxwell, Lieutenant Colonel John Armour - Commanding Officer, Army Logistics Training Centre Bandiana, Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees, Holy Trinity Cathedral Dean, Father Ken Goodger, and Galen Catholic College student Ruby Cook.

SPEAKER: Galen Catholic College year 11 student Ruby Cook will recite ‘In Flanders Fields’ at Friday’s Remembrance Day service.

The service will include the hymn ‘Abide with Me’, followed

by The Lord’s Prayer, with Colonel Armour to address the congregation as guest speaker.

Mayor Rees will then move the motion of loyalty and Miss Cook will recite ‘In Flanders Fields’.

Wangaratta RSL vice president Ron Sneddon will recite ‘The Ode’ and a bugler will sound ‘Last Post’ at 11am.

Various organisations and individuals will be given the opportunity to lay a wreath at the cenotaph.

Everyone present will join in the singing of the Australian National Anthem and Fr Goodger will give the final blessing.

An unveiling of a new memorial near the cenotaph, originally planned to take place tomorrow, has been postponed until early 2023.

The Wangaratta Cenotaph is located at the corner of Docker and Ovens streets, Wangaratta.

WANGARATTA is one of the first five locations where new social inclusion action groups will be established by the State Government over the next year.

Groups are also set to be created in Benalla, Mansfield, Frankston and Latrobe, in a move aimed at helping Victorians build connections in their local communities and assist their mental health and wellbeing.

The initiative is part of the State Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, which recognised that communities are best-placed to understand and drive local social connection and inclusion to support mental health and wellbeing.

A total of $9 million has been set aside to establish the first 10 social inclusion action groups over the next four years, with the next five groups to be set up in 2024 and ‘25.

The groups will involve community members and leaders across local government areas working together to deliver initiative and activities which boost social inclusion and connection, developed by locals who know their communities.

They will be made up of a diverse range of community members and local leaders of all ages and backgrounds, including people with lived experience, Aboriginal people, and those from LGBTIQ+, disability and culturally diverse communities.

Springhurst brigade getting tanker boost State backs local CFA efforts to bolster all-terrain capabilities p SPRINGHURST CFA brigade’s fire preparedness is set to be bolstered to the tune of more than $370,000, with the unit set to receive a state-of-the-art medium tanker in the coming months.

Largely funded through the state’s Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP), the new tanker will be able to carry 2350 litres of water while transporting five crew members in fourwheel drive (4WD) conditions.

The vehicles cost around $435,000, of which $375,000 will be courtesy of a state grant.

Springhurst brigade captain Stuart Maxwell said the new addition would be a valuable upgrade on the brigade’s existing fleet.

“The medium tanker is like an all-abilities unit and the country around Springhurst includes cropping land as well as rougher terrain, so having 4WD accessibility will be very helpful,” he said.

“Being a twin-cab vehicle is excellent as the safety and wellbeing of our members is paramount, and having the best equipment is fantastic for our small community that gives so much.

“We’re very grateful to everyone in the community who has helped fundraise for this, including individuals and businesses as they really help make our brigade as strong as we can be.”

Springhurst was one of three CFA brigades across the state to receive the maximum funding boost in the most recent round of VESEP grants, in which Wangaratta North will also be provided with $50,000

Power restored at Stamps Lane POWER has been fully restored to hundreds of rural city homes and businesses affected by the Stamps Lane power outage.

All houses were connected back to the power lines Friday evening.

Some 600 households had been provided with temporary electricity generators for the latter part of last week while 13 homes, including manufacturer business Alpine MDF, were made to wait for power lines - downed by fallen trees in flood waters - to be fully restored.

Initial estimates had power line restoration set for Thursday this week, but crews were able to access the fault earlier than anticipated to restore power lines by 5.50pm last Friday.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said VESEP grants helped to provide brigades with significant funding for life-saving equipment.

“This program provides $2 for every $1 of funding from the brigade, and helps with the purchase of equipment such as vehicles,

trucks, tankers, watercraft, trailers, and can also include minor facility improvements,” he said.

“The contributions from the government towards equipment means brigades like Springhurst have a great incentive to fundraise in their communities and apply for a VESEP grant.

“There are also special access

grants available to provide a further financial boost for brigades that face challenges with fundraising.”

Other big winners in the North East included Wooragee and Browns Plains CFA brigades, each receiving $214,000 towards a new CFA vehicle, and Porepunkah CFA, which received $80,000 to upgrade facilities.

A REMEMBRANCE Day service being held in Oxley this Friday will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the unveiling of the Oxley Shire Soldiers Memorial and all are welcome to attend.

The special event will begin at 10.30am and include a Catafalque party, address by Wangaratta RSL sub-branch president Lieutenant General (Retired) Ash Power, and the unveiling of a centenary plaque, with refreshments to follow at the Oxley Shire Hall.

Organics plant could double in capacity

By STEVE KELLY THE capacity of Wangaratta’s Organics Processing plant could more than double in size to 25,000 tonne per annum if a feasibility study supports the growth.

Rural City of Wangaratta Council has received $160,000 to carry out design works to increase capacity as the facility evolves as a processing plant for the region.

Council director of community

and infrastructure, Marcus Goonan, said it’s part of latest round of the Victorian Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund and Investment Fast Track Fund.

“The current design capacity of the facility is 12,000 tonnes per annum, with the possibility to expand to 25,000 tonnes per annum and establish the facility as a true regional organics processing facility,” Mr Goonan said.

“The State Infrastructure Plan

and the Regional Waste Management Plan recognise the significance of this facility in the development of a circular economy approach to waste management.”

Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre’s aging roof received $20,000 and Bellbridge Boathouse at Lake Hume was successful receiving $324,493.

The three projects are part of 38 in rural and regional communities that will share in $20 million

in funding from the Labor Government.

There are 14 successful grants as part of the Regional Infrastructure Fund and 24 successful grants from the Investment Fast Track Fund in the latest round.

Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, said she was delighted to announce support for these projects to help towns and regions reach their full potential with more jobs and exciting projects.

Scam losses tipped to top $4b AUSTRALIANS are being urged to learn how best to identify a scam, with nationwide losses on track to pass $4 billion in 2022.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) received 166,000 scam reports between January and September, subsequently expanding efforts to improve awareness around scams due to estimates only 13 per cent of victims report to either Scamwatch or to the government or financial sectors.

As part of Scams Awareness Week, which comes to a close this Friday, ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said losses of $424.8m so far this year represented a 90 per cent increase on 2021 figures, when more than $2 billion was lost to scammers.

“With millions of Australians more vulnerable to scams following the recent spate of large-scale data breaches, there has never been a more important time to know the tell-tale signs of a scammer,” she said.

“We know scammers are relentlessly targeting Australians - research commissioned by the ACCC shows that 96 per cent of the population was exposed to a scam in the five years to 2021.

“Half of the survey’s respondents were contacted weekly or daily by scammers, a figure expected to rise given current cyber security concerns.

“Scammers evolve quickly, and their tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated and unscrupulous - there have been hundreds of reports to Scamwatch in the weeks after the recent high-profile data breaches and that is expected to continue.

“Cyber criminals have capitalized on the data breach by impersonating government departments and businesses to carry out identity theft and remote access scams.

“While there is a great deal of work underway to disrupt scammers, our best defence against these types of scams is education - we want Australians to know what to look for, so they don’t get caught out.”

So far this year, phone and SMS scams have accounted for more than 100,000 Scamwatch reports, while people aged 65 and over have made the most reports (35,343) and experienced the highest losses ($87.4m).

A DONATION of more than $3000 from Wangaratta’s Bicycle User Group (BUG) means the world to Cycling Without Age Wangaratta, the local branch of a charity which offers free ebike trishaw rides to older people, and those with disabilities or reduced mobility.

“The donation allows us to concentrate on taking people for rides instead of running (fundraising) barbecues,” Gigi Blanch from Cycling Without Age said.

“We are also hoping to get a second trike, so it will help with that too.

“We would love to be able to pair up the bikes and enable more people to have excursions together.”

The $3435 donation came from the BUG’s coffers, having been

raised through Labour Day weekend bike rides staged by the group in Wangaratta several years ago.

“We hadn’t used the money for some time, and found some likeminded people who could use it,” BUG president Tony Ransom said.

“We can see it coming over the horizon that we will be in the passenger seat too, so we were pleased to provide the money to Cycling Without Age.” Wangaratta BUG has about 30 active riders who meet for three official weekly rides, on Saturday,

Wednesday and a short course on Friday, and also gather in groups for additional rides during the week.

Some members, including Tony, also volunteer their time as pilots and accompanying riders on the Cycling Without Age outings, which are growing in popularity.

Gigi said passengers were coming from local aged care homes, as well as the wider community, including people who set up the opportunity for friends.

“The number of people looking out for their mates and organising rides is wonderful; that generosity is beautiful to see,” she said.

“We also get some referrals from physios, and people who just see the trike around and want to have a ride.

“Some people will pull over in their cars and say hello - the get so much delight from seeing it in action.”

Gigi said the number of available volunteers for pilot roles was the only limiting factor at the moment for the group, which would love to hear from anyone interested in volunteering their time.

Tony encouraged others to consider the volunteer opportunity: “Being an ebike, you don’t have to be super fit or strong, and it’s a great social outing for the people who come along for a ride, so it’s great to be part of that.”

Support announced to deal with Centre’s enrolment downturn

Council plea for grit, resilience money

By STEVE KELLY FUNDING for the renowned Grit and Resilience Program is due to end in June next year and Rural City of Wangaratta leaders are championing the cause for extra money to perpetuate the life-changing initiative.

Rural City of Wangaratta May Dean Rees, chief executive officer Brendan McGrath, and program coordinator Bek Nash-Webster visited Canberra recently to discuss the program with the chief of staff for Federal Minister for Health Mark Butler.

Some $1.2 million was funded by the Federal Government to support the program over three years but that funding will end next June.

“We would like at least the same money again over another three years because we feel the program is building and getting momentum with more programs,” Cr Rees said.

“Grit and Resilience produced Project 365 which now raises its own money to put back into our community towards mental health as well,” Cr Rees said.

Project 365 is a group of members who have all been impacted by mental health or suicide, either through their own experience, or by supporting others on their journey.

With a shared love of music, the group formed a band titled ‘U Can Cry’ and raised $30,000 from their performance which they donated to Give Wangaratta.

Cr Rees said postvention sup-

port for people is a facet the Grit and Resilience Program needs funding support for to assist people living with the impact of suicide.

The program was mentioned as a case study in the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

It aims to drive positive mental health and wellbeing in the area by supporting the local community to unite, build strength, overcome hardship, and develop courage and a connection with each other.

One of the main components is that the Grit and Resilience is a community-driven initiative, a program coordinated by Ms Nash-Webster, though council.

“The groups have funding for whatever activities they want to do, and while we have a project

logic that helps groups to map out the project and determine what they hope to see in 12 months’ time, the activities they decide to do within the community is completely up to the community group that will be designing and delivering it,” Ms Nash-Webster told the Royal Commission when it visited Wangaratta.

Recent events included the Grit and Resilience Festival that was held earlier this month to coincide with World Mental Health Day. Other events included Art is in Our Heat workshops in July and September, Mindframe training, Grit and Resilience Heatbeat, and the Winter Solstice.

THE Adult, Community and Further Education Board (ACFE) and the Department of Education and Training last week announced additional support for The Centre in Wangaratta and other Learn Locals and community-based training providers to help deal with lower student numbers and interrupted operations this year.

Carol Nolan, chair of the board, said The Centre appreciated the support.

“We, and other community-based training providers, are very grateful to the Department of Education and Training and the ACFE Board for their help at a very difficult time,” Ms Nolan said.

“This support recognises the exceptionally difficult circumstances and the important work we all do in our communities and will ensure the continuity of our programs and courses into the next year.”

The Centre announced back in September that enrolments in certificate courses, for people who pay the full fee,was more than 30 per cent less than expected and there were 25 per cent fewer enrolments for ACFE funded courses, which focus on adult learners who are seeking to prepare for study or work.

Free TAFE courses and a strong labour market were thought to have been the major reasons for the reduction in demand for community based training courses.

The package of support measures provided by the ACFE Board included a grant for innovation of training delivery to meet local need and an increase in the funding rate from 2023.

The Department of Education and Training is providing a one-off support payment to eligible communitybased Skills First training providers, in recognition that the anticipated quick recovery in student numbers following COVID-19 had not occurred, and to support preparations for delivery in 2023.

“In the past months, The Centre has taken tough measures to reduce its staff and cut costs where possible, and I want to express my regret again to those staff and their families who are impacted,” Ms Nolan said.

“The support of the Department of Education and Training and the ACFE Board secures our future and provides the capacity to continue our important work.”

State‘s backing of rural brigades timely THE financial support local fire brigades have received in the aftermath of horrific ‘campaign‘ fires has drastically improved the safety and capability of the local fire response.

In late October, both Springhurst and Wooragee were announced as recipients of more than $200,000 in state funding each, building on generous financial donations from communities which have been avid supporters of their town‘s firefighting efforts.

Despite persistent rain and colder temperatures continuing throughout spring as part of a third consecutive year of La Nina, residents can never neglect or forget the imminent threat of fire in the North East.

These extremes have become the norm in recent years, with local residents only required to cast their minds back to the start of 2020 to recall the extreme dry weather which quickly endangered homes and livelihoods throughout the region.

Rural fire brigades are invariably the lifeblood of rural communities, and as a result we cannot support them enough.

There is no doubt further support is required to bolster the region‘s response, particularly in finding a suitable permanent home for Wangaratta CFA Group‘s operations base.

However, the steps made to better equip our local brigades to respond to blazes before they grow out of control, through the provision of state–of–the–art equipment and facilities upgrades, are to be commended.

The fact that state funding under the new grants doubles the money raised by the brigade within the community is a testament to the importance the community places on fire preparedness.

Long may it continue.

FACEBOOK users this week commented on the State Government’s election promise that if re-elected later this month, it will cut V/Line rail or bus service fares from Wangaratta to Southern Cross Station from $67.60 to $9.20.

CATHOLIC Health Australia welcomes the Fair Work Commission’s (FWC) interim decision to award aged care nurses a 15 per cent pay rise.

But we believe it is critical that support workers also receive a boost to stop them leaving the sector.

The FWC on Friday ruled that nurses should immediately get a 15 per cent interim increase to their minimum wages - but crucial support workers including kitchen, laundry and maintenance staff are still awaiting their fate.

These workers, who are essential to the provision of good quality age care, also deserved a wage increase.

Better wages and conditions are key to attracting and retaining workers, and to restoring dignity to the carers who do such important work for society.

The commission has not yet decided on whether around 100,000 administration and support workers will also receive a pay rise, and if so, how much.

These workers are critical to delivering quality aged care and deserve a pay rise.

CHA supports immediately passing increases on and delivering a much-needed boost to the workforce.

We look forward to the government delivering on its promise to fully fund the wage increase.

Earlier this year a CHA survey found there were almost 50,000 nursing and care worker vacancies in the sector so this is a welcome step to plugging that gap.

The government should also consider other policies to make sure the aged care sector where more than half of facilities are running at a loss - can recruit and retain staff.

There are several measures that can help improve the recruitment of aged care workers such as affordable, flexible, out of hours childcare options for care workers; reform nurse training practices to get nurses into aged care facilities sooner, and streamlining the immigration process by listing aged care workers as a priority cohort and reducing fees and processing times.

We estimate 9-18 per cent (441,000 tonnes conservatively) of the material in council provided waste bins is recyclable, while a massive 41-52 per cent (2,000,900 tonnes conservatively) could be composted at home or organic processing facilities.

These results show that about half of what Australians currently send to landfill could actually be recycled, composted or otherwise processed, which is clearly far too much.

The good news is that with just small changes to our recycling behaviours and further investment in large scale food processing and composting facilities for garden and food waste, which is already underway, we could significantly reduce the quantity of waste going to landfill.

National Recycling Week is an excellent reminder that much of what we currently send to landfill is actually valuable material that could be reused, repurposed or recycled.

This year’s theme “Waste isn’t waste until it’s wasted” is all about providing simple and practical tips that enable Australians to keep those valuable materials in circulation, whether at home, work or school.

According to our research, the annual recycling rate in Australia has increased from just seven per cent to more than 60 per cent of all disposed materials since 1996.

In total quantities, we have gone from recycling just 1.5 million tonnes of material to a massive 43 million tonnes each year.

But there is still more we could be doing to ensure valuable resources don’t end up wasted in landfill.

That’s why this year Planet Ark wants people to pause and think about what they are currently sending to landfill and ask whether it is waste after all.

Candidate is up for challenge

By STEVE KELLY ENTHUSIASTIC 22-year-old Mount Beauty resident Zoe Kromar announced her candidacy for the Greens in the Ovens Valley electorate last week and she’s inspired to take on the challenges and needs of the region.

The first-time candidate lists her qualities as having “a strong sense of community” and a “passion for environmental protection and preservation”.

“It has been an amazing experience so far and the Greens, my friends, my family and the community have been very supportive,” she said.

She is flying the Greens’ flag when it comes to taking urgent action on the climate crisis and highlighted that the Greens want to replace all coal and gas with 100 per cent renewables by 2030.

Ms Kromar said the Greens want to invest in public transport and electric vehicles, ban political donations from the fossil fuels sector, support homes and businesses in moving towards renewable electricity and end land clearing and native forest logging.

“We have already seen the devastating effects that the climate crisis has had on our own region, with bushfires and now the floods,” she said.

“These plans are essential

“This will create long term sustainable jobs for our region, bringing more workers to the area, and growing our economy.

“The Ovens Valley district would be provided with not only the opportunity of employment for ourselves, but also for generations to come.”

The Greens plan to build a million new and sustainable public and social homes over the next 20 years across cities,

towns, regions and remote areas.

Ms Kromar said this will help the many in our region who are struggling to find available and affordable houses, and will provide the opportunity for thousands of quality jobs.

“We plan to limit rent increases to stop out of control rent rises,” she said.

“This will greatly assist our community with our issue of growing rental prices, which significantly affects low income families and young people.

“I have faced this myself when I struggled to find a rental in the rapidly growing town of Bright, and know many friends who have had to move away from the area and from their work because of rental price increases.

“This has also seen many businesses in the hospitality industry suffer with staff shortages, causing many to have to close for weeks at a time.

“More homes in our area will bring the workers we need to support this quickly growing industry.”

After the past few years working in the hospitality and tourism industry in Bright and Falls Creek, she is looking forward to attending university to study politics and sociology.

Election day is on November 26, with pre-poll voting starting on November 14.

$800k contract to reseal roads

A ROAD reseal contract for council roads valued at $800,966 has been awarded to Boral Resources Pty Ltd. Council director of community and infrastructure Marcus Goonan said as a part of the Rural City of Wangaratta’s asset renewal program, council completes an Annual Road Reseal Program based on road condition data.

He said the reseal program consists of the preparation for and bitumen sealing of selected roads in urban and rural areas and as a provisional item to the tender, asphalt works were included.

Council is part of an alliance with five other councils who summoned the expertise of Procurement Australia to contract a panel of suppliers for the annual reseal programs over three years, with the potential for two 12-month options.

The 2022/23 financial year is the fifth year and the final year of this panel and this will be reviewed next year.

Cr Irene Grant, in moving the motion to award the contract at the October ordinary council meeting, said it was one of the most important aspects in the awarding of tenders by councils.

their councils and we endeavour to maintain our roads in the best possible way,” Ms Grant said.

Council issued a statement on the condition of city roads last week, indicating that persistent rain was still impacting works delivery.

“It is slowing down capital works programs and is preventing us from being able to complete required maintenance to our existing infrastructure,” Mr Goonan said.

Council has submitted a claim under the Victorian Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements for around $3 million with further works still to be completed.

Step by step: Electrifying a home to cut costs and improve liveability

A

ll electric houses are cheaper to run and have less emissions than those using gas. Making the switch is good for the household budget, and good for the environment.

Planning to make the switch from gas powered heating systems, hot water services and stoves to all electric, preferably powered from rooftop solar, is planning to save money, as well as reducing your home’s emissions and making it healthier.

One approach is to replace things as they break down, but planning is essential to avoid an emergency replacement where another gas appliance goes in because it’s easy and quick.

Replacing gas appliances before they fail assures the benefits of the switch, and avoids pressured decisions and possibly days of discomfort and inconvenience.

And in Victoria, there is significant government help to pay for the switch.

Where to start?

Get the biggest savings by replacing the appliances which cost the most to run first. A much bigger gas bill in winter than summer usually means swapping out the gas space heating system for an electric heat pump (reverse cycle air conditioning) system will save the most.

The gas hot water system comes next. It is important to make this switch before the gas system fails and leaves you without hot water in the middle of winter.

The stove is usually the smallest consumer of gas, and so probably the last to go.

But if a kitchen renovation is due, getting an induction cooktop in place of the old gas hob will save money overall, and end the health risks posed by the waste gases from the old appliance.

Once the last gas appliance is gone, the gas connection can go too, along with the daily gas connection fee. That saves another $279 a year. Every year.

Year after year.

An all-electric household is more efficient than gas. It’s

cheaper to run because there’s no more paying for the waste energy that goes up the flue.

The savings will be even greater with rooftop solar.

Rooftop solar can provide much of the power appliances need.

Running washing machines, driers, dishwashers in the middle of the day will add to savings.

Adding a home battery that saves electricity when there is more than needed for later use will decrease power bills.

Victoria's Gas Substitution Roadmap details of how solar households can save $1,250 a year by electrification, with another $550 saved each year with a medium sized home battery.

Paying For It All The Victorian Government has announced rebates of $2,600 to replace ducted gas and evaporative systems with heat pumps, and $300 rebates to swap gas hot water with electric heat pumps. Extra assistance for solar and batteries is available for a short time if you join those in Wangaratta already participating in Project Edge which will trial and test a possible future electricity trading system.

Edge needs solar systems and batteries across the Hume Region for the trial and will give extra help for solar and batteries by reducing the upfront cost.

Bus network expansion promised

AN elected Coalition government will look to expand bus services throughout regional Victoria, pledging to undertake a root and branch review of Wangaratta’s public transport network if successful at the November 26 election.

Liberals leader Matthew Guy announced the significant review would be undertaken as part of the Coalition's long-term economic plan, with $160m promised to be injected into the state's transport provision, in an effort to deliver at least 45 new or expanded bus services within Victoria.

Mr Guy also outlined plans to introduce uniform-

ity across V/Line’s midweek timetable, introduce a weekend service from Bright, Myrtleford and Beechworth to Wangaratta and then onto Melbourne, and also increase Wangaratta to Bendigo services via Shepparton to five days a week.

The announcement follows the Coalition's commitment to halve V/line fares and cap metropolitan public transport at a $2 flat fare.

“Unlike some, I want to govern for all Victorians, and that starts by delivering on good ideas that have a real impact on those living in every corner of our state,” Mr Guy said.

“People shouldn’t have to

rely on taxis or rideshare services to get to a train station, a bus should get them there.

“We will deliver an affordable, better public transport system so Victorians can put those savings into what really matters.”

Coalition plans also outlined the development of a dedicated bus route for Yarrawonga to replace the existing taxi service, while funds would assist in increasing the frequency of Bright to Mount Hotham's ALPS LINK service.

Shadow minister for public transport, Danny O'Brien, said regional Victorians were deserving of improved bus routes.

‘Pitcher This’ rolls out across the rural city ON the back of the successful launch of Pitcher This at Whorouly last month, Rural City of Wangaratta is rolling out the placemaking project in communities across the municipality.

Pitcher This seeks to empower rural communities to present ideas about their own public spaces, events, and gatherings, and how these should be developed for the greatest benefit in each community.

Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Cr Dean Rees said Pitcher This aims to inspire people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community.

At Whorouly three groups pitched their ideas and the town’s

beautification plan received the main award of $1000.

The Glenrowan Recreation Reserve mural and seating plan received $500 and Whitfield Recreation Reserve received $250 to hold a community barbecue and pizza party.

“Pitcher This is being held in our rural communities to enhance community connection and hear inspiring ideas that will lead to more great events and projects around our rural communities,” Cr Rees said.

“The Whorouly Family Fun Day where the Whorouly beautification plan was pitched was a great example of a community led idea that everyone enjoyed.

NORTH East Security Services and SSX Group have both been awarded a contract to provide security services to nominated Rural City of Wangaratta Council properties to ensure they’re protected, safe and secure.

Part A of the contract, valued at $123,348, was awarded to North East Security Services and part B, valued at $684,453, was awarded to SSX Group.

The terms of the contracts will be for a period of three years, with the option to two one-year extensions.

School sports Wangaratta High School FOUR year 12 students competed at the School Sport Victoria (SSV) State Athletics Competition last month.

Even with cold and windy conditions, Jack Boulton won both the 200m and 400m events demonstrating his speed, focus, humility and sincere sportsmanship.

The three other relay boys Thomas Solimo, Vincent Chisholm and Jarrod Bell arrived late afternoon to go through their warm-up paces with Jack, before seriously taking it to the three metro schools, who came one to three, with Wangaratta High School being fourth by half a metre.

Coming fourth in the state was an incredible achievement which made the school proud.

Wangaratta Primary School THE school community recently celebrated Italian Day. Students were encouraged to come dressed in Italian-themed costumes and there was an array of attire including pizza chefs, flag inspired outfits, gelato sales, Leonardo da Vinci’s and even the Mona Lisa artwork.

The day was filled with Italian-based activities such as building the Leaning Tower of Pisa from newspaper, drawing the Mona Lisa, playing bocce and constructing masks for Pinocchio.

To top it off, students enjoyed a scrumptious serving of pizza for lunch.

The foundation students are certainly helping Chloe experience all facets of teaching, including curriculum and classroom management.

Asbestos - the 20 point checklist THIS handy, 20 point checklist will help you learn about asbestos and how to deal with it if you find it in your home.

1. At least one in three Australian brick, weatherboard, fibro and clad homes and apartments contain asbestos.

2. Asbestos was widely used in building materials before 1987 so if your home was built or renovated before 1987, it most likely contains asbestos.

3. If asbestos is disturbed during renovations or maintenance, your health and the health of your family could be at risk.

4. DIY is not recommended where asbestos is present.

5. When renovating or working in and around homes, if in doubt assume asbestos materials are present and take every precaution.

6. Dealing with asbestos is important and serious, but it’s not overwhelming - It is manageable.

7. If you’re not sure if asbestos is in your home you can have it inspected by a licenced removalist or a licensed asbestos assessor.

8. Products made from asbestos cement include fibro sheeting (flat and corrugated), water, drainage and flue pipes, roofing shingles, guttering and floor and wall coverings.

PLAY IT SAFE: Don’t play renovation roulette if you know or suspect your home contains asbestos.

9. If you find asbestos in your home: don’t cut it, drill it, drop it, sand it, saw it, scrape it, scrub it, dismantle it, water blast it, demolish it and definitely don’t dump it.

10. If left undisturbed asbestos materials in good, stable condition are unlikely to release dangerous fibres and pose a health risk.

Generally, you don’t need to remove the asbestos. Paint it and

leave it alone but remember to check it occasionally for any signs of wear and tear.

11. There are legal requirements regarding asbestos management, its removal and disposal.

12. While some might follow the regulations and safety requirements to remove small amounts of asbestos, the safest way to manage its removal is to retain a licenced professional

asbestos removalist equipped to protect you and your family from the dangers of asbestos dust and fibres.

13. Where asbestos fibres are friable (loose and not bonded into building materials), only licenced friable asbestos removalists are allowed to remove it.

14. Professional removal of asbestos is affordable - you can’t afford not to use a professional.

15. The cost of asbestos removal by a licenced professional is comparable to most licenced tradesmen including electricians, plumbers and tilers.

16. The cost of disposal at a lawful site is often included with the cost of removal by a licenced professional.

17. If you must work with any material that may contain asbestos or remove asbestos yourself, protect yourself and your family and follow the legal and safety requirements for the management of asbestos to minimise the release of dust or small particles from the asbestos materials.

18. There are a number of safety precautions you will need to take including wearing specific protective clothing, the correct mask or breathing apparatus and ensure you minimise dust and dispose of it legally.

19. Never use power tools such as electric drills, angle grinders, circular saws and electric sanders on asbestos materials as they will make asbestos fibres airborne.

Never use high pressure water blasters or compressed air.

20. Don’t play renovation roulette. Think Smart. Think Safe.

Fun and fitness for all in the King Valley Challenge COOL weather, continual rain and even some flooding in the lead-up to the event didn’t deter competitors from taking part in the 2022 King Valley Challenge held in the region on Saturday.

Around 80 competitors tested their resolve over the course in what turned out to be perfect conditions; beginning with the three, six and 14 kilometre runs from Lake William Hovell, started by Rural City of Wangaratta councillor Harry Bussell.

For the first time in 13 years the run course was changed due to Evans Creek flowing too high and even turning the 4WD track into a creek for 200 metres.

Race director Liam Delany said the long run course was shortened from 15km to 14km but had more hill climbing (on the Evans NORTH East Prostate Cancer Support Group meets at the North Eastern Hotel (Northo) in Spearing Street today from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

Members are welcome to come along earlier at 6.45pm for dinner prior to the meeting.

Beautiful garden reopens for Carevan fundraiser A SPECTACULAR display of roses now in full bloom will hopefully attract hundreds of garden lovers to return to Sable Park, when Les and Rosemary Bolitho open their garden this Sunday in support of Carevan Wangaratta.

The couple showed their support for the organisation as part of an open garden event in October, but ongoing wet weather and the threat of floods meant numbers were fewer than originally expected.

With warmer weather forecast more this time around, visitors are once again invited to come and wander around the nearly five-acre property, with the recent sunshine bringing out the best in its over 700 beautiful roses.

Country stacks up in VCE

A STUDENT’S ability to apply themselves during their schooling is a large part of how they perform in VCE, but there are many other factors that contribute their desired outcome such as getting into a university course of their choice.

Despite students dealing with adversity from the pandemic in 2020 and the touted country-city education divide, they performed reasonably well judging by the VCE study scores released by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCCA).

Teens look to the future with uni

WANGARATTA High School year 12 graduates Kayla Fisher and Amy Henderson were among hundreds of local students, and tens of thousands around the state, who received their first round university offers yesterday.

The pair are both interested in humanitarian work and development, and were offered their first choice course at their chosen universities.

Kayla, 17, has been offered a

double degree in Arts and Public Policy with a major in third-world development at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“I was happy with my ATAR score even if I thought I could do better but it’s been a tough year,” Kayla said.

“It was difficult not having feedback from classmates because I didn’t know if I was doing okay or needed to improve.

“But, I got there in the end and am

looking forward to the next step.”

Amy, 18, will be doing occupational therapy at Deakin but hopes to branch into humanitarian work in third world countries.

“I had hoped for a higher ATAR but I didn’t need one, I’m pretty happy with how I went,” Amy said.

The late change didn’t affect Wangaratta though as they went about posting their first win of the season.

MULWALA will host some of the best water skiers in the world this summer in a series of major events.

Oceania Games November 17-19 The Oceania Games between Australia and New Zealand, showcasing the best skiers from both countries, will include three event skiing ( jumps, tricks and slalom), barefooting, disabled skiing, ski racing, show skiing and wakeboarding.

Yarrawonga’s Chloe Mills, former Junior world champion pro wakeboarder will lead the field in the women’s wakeboard event.

Yarrawonga’s Pete O’Neill, 10-times Australian barefoot champion and member of the Australian World Champion Barefoot team four times, will headline the men’s barefoot competition.

The three-event competition will be held at the Max Kirwan Ski Park at Mulwala and the wakeboard competition at Major’s Creek, Bundalong from November 17-19, with the ski jumping competition under lights from 8pm on Saturday, November 19 at the Max Kirwan Ski Park.

IWWF Barefoot World Championships February 14 - 19 2023 This event at the Max Kirwan Ski Park in Mulwala, will attract the best barefoot skiers in the world as they vie for world champion status.

Competitors will come from around the globe including the USA, Finland, Sweden, England, Germany, France, Canada, and New Zealand.

Queensland’s Ashleigh Steebeings, seven times world champion and broadly considered the greatest female barefoot water skier of all time, will be a star attraction in leading the Australian team.

The Australian team will also include Yarrawonga’s Keenan Derry and Connor Rogers, both who coach water skiing out of the Mulwala Water Ski Club Pro Shop, Harry Hogan and Macy Peebles on Australian teams as well as Zali Peebles, Zeke Peebles and Rhys Driscol who qualified to ski as independence (skiers who don’t score for the team but reach the qualifying scores).

Australian Show Ski Championships March 25-26 2023 The Mulwala Water Ski Show team will vie for a fifth Australian title at the Australian Show Ski Championships from March 25-26 2023, having won the coveted title on four of the last five occasions.

Teams complete tricks and skills in their one-hour performance, often including a four-skier high pyramid.

The local team will include reigning Australian Show Ski Doubles Champions Boden Strawhorn from Bundalong and Kate Green from Yarrawonga.

Also competing will be current world champion in individual swivel, Alisha Stewart from the Carrum Downs Southern Waters Show Ski Team.

Teams are expected from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and possibly Tasmania making their first appearance.

Joe hits his way to the top

THE weather is finally starting to turn with a few breaks of sunshine peeking through the cumulus stratus cloud events.

This sunshine will definitely assist with the drying out and the growth of grass to the courts and with that will allow more people the chance to get down to Merriwa Park for a good hit out.

A changing of the guard on top of the aggregate ladder has started with none other than another Allen having a good win in section one.

It is now the left hander in Joe’s time to shine with some classic top spin forehands making their mark by either a down the line winner or a deft glancing cross court winner.

He eventually won the day with 22 games.

Coming in second was the old stager in Kevin Callahan on 20/14 from Mario Pane with 20/19.

Matt Allen had a grin from ear to ear as he watched Joe ply his craft, but the grin was not there for too long as Matt came in fourth with 19 games from Mark Brown in fifth with 11 games.

Barry Sullivan turned back the clock and took home a glass with his win (24 games) in section two.

Barry mixed his game up with a few top spin backhands and equally a few lobs as he took out Brian Scobie in second position with 22 games.

There was no damage done to the remaining two players in Mike Lairson and Maree Sullivan who both finished equal third with a score of 19/23.

Section three had Alan Busk’s name written all over it as he put serve after serve into the corners of the box to eventually come out on top with 23 games.

Coming in second was Mark Wettern on 22 games from Julian Taylor with 17/20.

‘Philthy’ Phil Dryden was next in line with 17/21 from Andrew Cope in

fifth place with 17/24.

Des Steele and Geoff Allen were at each other all day with at one stage a slashing forehand sliced through the wiry frame of Des. Des glanced at Geoff as if to say is that the best you got and then proceeded to craft his way into points and glide another winner down the line.

In the end the two could not be separated with both finishing on 22/17.

Russell Canning, the man who huffed and puffed and blew the house down, came in third with 18 games from the silver fox (Pat Flynn) and his little brother Terry finishing equal on 17/21.

Section five saw Greg Renner hand out a clinic to his opponents as he won with 24/10.

Noel Boyd came in second with 17 games from Peter Curran on 15 games with Amy Lairson bring up the rear with 12 games.

Another glass went out of the clubrooms and this time it was Russell O’Brien who won with 24/14.

Beth Cope came in second with 20 games from Geoff Davidson in third with 18 games.

It was tight for finishing fourth with John Shanley scrapping in on games against with 13/21 to Tony Clarebrough on 13/22.

There is word on the street that Mick Keogh has been sighted bathing in pool very similar to one used in the Cocoon as his body seems to have turned back time as he won section seven with 20 games.

Coming in second was Sue Piper with 19 games from Max McAulliffe on 18 games and Peter Ablazej with 17 games.

From back page “Being under ‘Vasa’ this season was awesome, he always knows how to react,” Molinaro said.

“I think the way he talks to his players is something I’ll take away from him, he’s so composed and always transparent so he had great relationships with the players.

“In terms of game play though he comes from a national background so I got a great insight into a lot of things in that area that I can hopefully build on this season.”

With both men’s teams making grand finals in 2022 but losing, Molinaro will be hoping he can take the division one team one step further.

“The club is in a great position at the moment with both teams making grand finals this season,” Molinaro said.

“It was the first time the division one and two teams both made the grand final so we’re really lucky with the depth we have and, hopefully, we’ll have something similar next season.

“Compared to 10-15 years ago we’ve got a great base of players in their mid to late 20s who all work in Wangaratta and are sticking around the area.

“Hopefully I can build on that.”

Dale’s hot start to 2022/23 IT’S been a fantastic couple of weeks for Wangaratta horse trainers with locals combining for seven winners.

Andrew Dale was the standout with four victors, while Craig Weeding grabbed two and James Fraser managed one.

Dale’s Malabar Jack and Wynsome Maid kicked the stable into form with a double at Narrandera on October 29, Garros scored by more than two lengths at Albury on Friday and stable star Mescaminto notched up her fifth career win at Benalla on Sunday.

For Weeding, it was Battle Talent who saluted in his maiden at Echuca last Tuesday (November 2), while Choice Harvest won convincingly at Benalla.

James Fraser’s Faithful Maryanne took out her first career win at Bendigo, also last Tuesday.

Dale’s stable is now up to 16 winners this season.

“It’s been a good start to the year,” Dale said.

“It’s our best start ever and that probably comes down to the fact that we’re having lots of runners per meeting.

“There’s definitely a bit of luck involved but I think we’re just presenting our horses well and running them in the right races.

“We work on the philosophy that you just have to present your horses in a healthy and well condition.”

Eight-year-old gelding Garros’ victory was the surprise though, not only winning by more than two lengths, but also saluting at $41 for happy punters.

“He was definitely racing out of his grade so it probably was a bit of a surprise,” he said.

“We bought him as a tried horse and you’re always going to be taking a risk when

you do that but he does have ability.

“You look back to previous times with him when he was a four and five-year-old and he was winning benchmark 70 races at Canberra so he lost his way a bit but he’s got ability and we’ve just got to try and extract that out of him.

“It can be difficult with him too because some days he’ll be ready to go and some he mightn’t turn up but he’s a ripper.”

Five-year-old mare Mescaminto took out her third career win at $3.20 in race five (0-58 handicap) at Benalla on Monday.

After winning her first two within her first five starts it’s been a while between drinks for the handy mare who took out her third victory in her 20th run.

“She probably reached her level pretty quickly so it’s taken a while to get her third win but she’s come close on a number of occasions (eight placings),” Dale said.

“She’s had some problems though, she had quite a serious colic attack but she’s back and racing well.

“It’s good for her owners that she’s now back and generating consistent rev-

enue for them so it’s a good result.”

With the weather on the improvement, at least for now, Dale will be looking to make the most of some firmer tracks.

“It’s been a difficult few months with the weather and rain,” Dale said.

“You never know where you’re going to be taking your horses and it’s also harder to manage them in weather like we’ve had.

“They can get foot abscesses and skin conditions because of the climate they’re living in so hopefully we’re getting a bit of a break in the weather now.

“We’ve got a couple of options coming up but we’ll look to Gundagai’s Snake Gully Cup weekend on Friday and Saturday and hopefully look forward to some better tracks and regular racing.”

WANGARATTA City has announced Raff Molinaro as their coach for the 2023 season.

Molinaro will replace Daniel Vasilevski at the helm after leading the Devils’ division two men’s team to their first grand final in 20 years last season.

Molinaro can’t wait to step up to the challenge.

“I’m replacing ‘Vasa’ (Vasilevski) so I’ve definitely got big shoes to

fill,”Molinaro said.

“To be a player that started my career with Wangaratta as a junior and then worked my way through seniors to now coaching is pretty special.

“It’s a great opportunity that I’m really looking forward to.”

Molinaro admitted it’s a

weird feeling coaching the club he rose through the grades with.

“It sort of feels like a bit of imposter syndrome,” he said.

“I started as a junior and all I wanted to do was work my way into seniors and all of a sudden I’m coaching the senior side.

“It’s pretty crazy that now people are looking for my experience and learnings from my time at the club but it’s definitely a great feeling.”

Molinaro worked closely with Vasilevski last season and believes he learned plenty of valuable lessons.
