Government’s fire services tax hike, not on our watch CFA volunteers, council and farmers rise up calling on crossbenchers to vote against tax

AN 11th hour bid to stop the controversial Emergency Services Volunteers Fund (ESVF) from passing the Victorian upper house next week has been made with a last-ditch appeal to all crossbench MPs. Victorian Fire Brigades Victoria District 23 president and veteran firefighter Garry Nash has written to 59 MPs along with the Premier Jacinta Allan and Treasurer Jaclyn Symes.

Under the ESVF, primary producers face triple the tax for each parcel of land to what they’re paying now, and residential property taxes would double.

Mr Nash’s latest push to force a stay on the legislation, which passed the lower house in March, was on Thursday, backed by Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Irene Grant and Deputy Mayor Harvey Benton, local firefighters, and farmers.

They gathered out the front of council’s municipal offices and Mr Nash briefed the gathering on letters to politicians calling for the ESVF to be scrapped, and he led off with a quote by Albert Einstein.

“Those who have the privilege to know, have the duty to act,” Mr Nash recited.

“The duty to act for me was prompted by the disrespect this current government has had for our volunteers, our rural and regional communities, and the government not consulting about the new levy.”

Mr Nash canned the ‘volunteers fund’ saying it was a “smoke screen” and he said volunteerism is not part of the fund and he rather described it as “an absolute tax grab”.

“I was more passionate about this when, after I wrote to the premier and the treas-

“That didn’t quite infuriate me, but it made me more determined to do something further so I have written letters to 59 MPs and I must say they have been very positive in their responses.

“An MP communicated with me today that its mutton dressed up as lamb and it’s an insult to volunteers and the community.

“This is why the Rural City of Wangaratta and other stakeholders see this as exactly the same and we need to have consultation as we go forward.”

Mayor Grant said council has been made very much aware of the levy by the community in how it will be another financial imposition they will have to manage.

“We’ve spoken to Jaclyn Symes and she’s been quite clear that this levy will go

as a councillor in terms of the way it’s been done and the methodology to use council as “the whipping horse” for government.

“It’s the equivalent of a 10 per cent rate rise on top of what people are paying now and once this goes through it could go up further in the next 12 months without consultation,” he said.

“To bring it back to the people in the urban area, it’s another 10 per cent you’ve got to find, it’s going to hurt for example renters, as much as it will the CFA. “For volunteers to pay for being a volunteer is absolute stupidity.”

The next session of the Legislative Council is scheduled for Tuesday, 13 May.

Man charged with theft of nearly $280,000 from farming business AN alleged farm stock fraudster charged with stealing nearly $280,000 worth of farm supplies from a local business over an eight-year period will face a one-day committal hearing in Wangaratta in October.

The 60-year-old is facing 157 charges of stealing, obtaining property by deception and falsifying tax and

payment documents from Everton Fuel and Farm (EFF) from 2013 to 2021.

The accused appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court last week, sitting silently on the crossbench as the matter was adjourned for a one-day committal hearing on 16 October.

The court heard three witnesses were sought to take

part in the hearing.

Police are accusing the alleged fraudster of taking copious amounts of farm supplies including sheep and cattle feed, fencing equipment, crop, wire, gate sets, generators, batteries, fertiliser, seeds, vaccines and hardware.

He also allegedly took supplies from dog, cat and fish food, to boots, socket sets

and various household items.

Police allege the man utilised false bank accounts to fraudulently pay for the stock.

The first of the alleged thefts took place between 23 September and 10 October, 2013, when the accused allegedly stole $432 worth of hardware items from the business.

Ms Fifis said the new equipment combines warming technology with integrated resuscitation features, allowing clinicians to respond rapidly and safely while keeping the baby close to the mother, ensuring both

She said NHW’s maternity ward has had a busy start to the year.

“We’ve had 276 births from January to April this year,” Ms Fifis said, with the ward and its facilities catering to a catchment including Yarrawonga, Benalla, Myrtleford and Bright.

NHW’s campaign will run from 9 May to 13 June, giving com-

munity members, businesses and local groups an opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of families right here in the Wangaratta region.

SPRINGHURST Cemetery Trust (Narimga Cemetery) will be running a ground penetrating radar across the grounds looking for unmarked graves tomorrow.

The project is running ahead of the cemetery trust’s plan to build new structures on the premises, including a toilet block and rotunda.

Springhurst Cemetery Trust secretary Jill Nash said the endeavour will identify any unmarked graves before they finalise their building plans.

“The cemetery has been there since the 1800s and the trust members are all volunteers so in time some of the records may have been lost or disposed of,” she said.

“According to our records, we have some graves that are unmarked, so before we start pouring concrete or structural work, we need to put a penetrating radar across the cemetery to protect the resting graves of those who are already there.

“We just didn’t want to pour concrete on some poor soul’s grave.”

Jill said due to the associated costs, they would not exhume any graves found.

“We have completely digitalised the cemetery so the graves’ locations will go on a digital map and a historic map,” she said.

“If anything gives us a lead in our records we could contact relatives if they are still living.

“But if there aren’t any living relatives, we’ll just mark the grave so that that person is not dug up or compromised in anyway.”

Visitors and interested cemetery trust members are welcome to observe after 11am and are asked to keep a fair distance from the operator so as not to disturb the works.

verything Caidyn Hayes loves about her mum Kylie will be evident during the pair’s involvement in Wangaratta’s Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday.

“She’s spending her Mother’s Day helping me volunteer; if you ask her to do something, she will do it at 150 per cent, and she also likes to support her community and help others,” Caidyn said.

Most importantly, Kylie and Caidyn will have a chance to spend time together as they walk/run the 3km section of the course and volunteer at the event, which has returned to Wangaratta after a number of years.

Participants walking or running the 3km, 5km or 10km stretch of the course beginning at the Wangaratta Rodeo Ground from 9.30am on Sunday will be raising awareness and funds for research into breast and ovarian cancer.

Organised by locals Gracie Reid and Chantelle West and supported by the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre, the event is open to all ages, with prams and four-legged friends welcome.

Those taking part are encouraged to dress in pink or purple if they wish, in accordance with the twin causes, and there will be spot prizes for best-dressed entrants.

So far, more than 150 people have registered to take part, and more are expected to join the gathering in Sunday’s predicted fine weather, to kick off their Mother’s Day in an active, community-focused way.

Caidyn said the dual causes of the Mother’s Day Classic were close to her family’s collective heart, with a family friend having recently finished treatment for breast cancer, and her dad, Ben, having lost his own mum to ovarian cancer the year Caidyn was born; Ben will also be volunteering on Sunday.

“I think it’s a good reminder that mums sacrifice a lot - that’s why we celebrate Mother’s Day - and through all those sacrifices made and love given by mothers, many women are also plagued by these diseases,” she said.

“It’s a good chance to recognise that, and to show support for all the mothers, and people who are like mothers, for all they do for us.

“You can acknowledge Mother’s Day in whatever way you wish, but it’s nice to be able to do it in this way - it’s something different.”

Kylie said she was impressed that the event had been revived in Wangaratta by young women eager to bring locals together for a great cause.

“It’s inspiring to see young people organising it and wanting to support their community,” she said.

rganiser Chantelle’s mother, Elvie West, said she would complete the 3km course pushing Chantelle’s 15-month-old daughter Giovanna in the pram as, like many families, hers had a connection to the cause.

“The BRCA2 gene is in our family - my son and youngest daughter have the gene,” she said.

Elvie said if people knew they carried the gene, it could be possible to eliminate it from a family line through careful testing and treatment, so events like the Mother’s Day Classic were a chance to raise awareness, and much-needed research funds to identify possibilities such as this.

“That was my main reason for taking part, as well as to volunteer on the day - to get awareness out there about the BRCA2 gene, so that people can learn more and understand it,” Elvie said.

“Also, my mother-in-law had ovarian cancer; there are not many families who are not touched by cancer.”

POLICE have made multiple arrests within Wangaratta and the North East following a major ongoing investigation into organised crime across the region.

Detective Sergeant Chris Hill of Wangaratta Criminal Investigation Unit said a 33-year-old Wangaratta man, a 37-year-old Yarrawonga man, a 36-yearold Wangaratta man, a 33-year-old Wangaratta woman and a 22-yearold Cobram woman were taken into custody on Wednesday.

The three men were remanded in custody and faced Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Thursday while the women were charged and bailed.

Det Sgt Hill said the 33-year-old Wangaratta man was charged and remanded on a number of charges including trafficking commercial amounts of meth and cocaine, gun trafficking, arson and insurance fraud.

The Yarrawonga man was also charged with drug and gun trafficking and conduct endangering life.

Det Sgt Hill said the 37-year-old man allegedly fired multiple shots from a firearm at a vehicle in Warrick Street, Yarrawonga on 5 March.

The 36-year-old man was charged with trafficking ecstasy, acquiring firearms and illicit ammunition and possession of a trafficable quantity of marijuana.

A 33-year-old Wangaratta woman was charged with three counts of drug trafficking, including MDMA and cocaine, while in Cobram, a 22-year-old woman was charged with two counts of drug trafficking and possession of prohibitive weapons and an imitation firearm.

Det Sgt Hill said the arrests came following a long-term investigation spanning more than 12 months into organised crime from Cobram to Wangaratta.

Battery subsidies start 1 July HOME batteries are set to change the energy landscape with household subsidies to solar and storage systems to deliver benefits to household power bills and take strain off the energy grid.

The Smart Energy Council has predicted $1.3 billion would be saved on wholesale power prices each year if one million batteries were installed in Australia, delivering benefit to all consumers.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program will allow Australian households with-

out solar to save up to $2300 a year if they get solar and a solar battery, while those with solar can save up to an extra $1100 by adding a solar battery.

There are currently 77 solar batteries on the Australian market, starting at around $4000 for a 5kWh battery.

Helen Haines, re-elected Independent federal MP for Indi, said her home batteries policy, which was adopted by the Labor government during the election, will transform how households

benefit from their rooftop solar and substantially reduce their annual energy bills.

“The scheme starts on 1 July but batteries can be purchased and installed now and be eligible for the subsidy in the new financial year,” Dr Haines said.

“I spent two years prosecuting this policy to the government, knowing the potential for households to substantially reduce their energy bills if we could increase their access to home batteries.

“I was thrilled when Labor committed to my policy so that home battery subsidies will be available to people across Indi and the nation to benefit from energy generated by their home solar to store and use during peak periods.

“Home batteries will deliver immediate bill relief for households and community groups, and over time we will see this benefit extend to all consumers by reducing overall pressure on the grid.

“Batteries allow households with solar to store

energy generated by the sun, then use it at times when the sun isn’t shining, like at night time. It can also help even out the amount of energy in the grid when household solar is producing more energy than the grid needs.”

Dr Haines said in addition to her home battery policy, she would extend her focus to micro-grids and community energy to help towns that experience repeat power outages in extreme weather and at edge-of-grid.

Budget change lifts public engagement

A SHIFT by council to consult with the community during the development of the council budget has improved the level of public engagement for the the Rural City of Wangaratta.

Council director of corporate and leisure, Sarah Brindley, said in accordance with the LGA2020 the focus has shifted to engaging with the community during the development of the budget, in place of the previous requirement of 28 days of public exhibition once it had been drafted.

She said the rural city undertook a budget consultation process between December 2024 and January 2025 to help inform the development of the 2025/26 budget.

“As a result, council has seen much higher rates of community engagement with 138 community survey responses and 47 community budget request submissions having been made this year,” she said.

“Council received 11 submissions for 24/25, and seven for 23/24.

“The 2025/26 budget is scheduled to be presented to council for adoption at a council meeting in June 2025.”

A THREE-acre scrub fire in the Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park was contained by local brigades on Tuesday afternoon.

A CFA spokesperson said 10 CFA units responsed to the blaze around 2:27pm on Barambogie Road, Chiltern.

Among those brigades was the Beechworth Fire Brigade, who said the fire “escalated quickly” due to dry and windy conditions.

The CFA spokesperson said the fire was burning slowly in a westerly direction and fire-

“Crews remained on scene providing fire suppression,” they said.

The scene was deemed safe by 4:55pm.

The incident comes as CFA and emergency services urged landowners to take extra precautions before an expected surge of planned burn-offs this month.

CFA and Triple Zero Victoria expect a surge in burn-off registrations over the coming weeks with fire restrictions eased across the state.

Give to the NHW neonatal appeal IT can be easy to forget how blessed we are to live where we do, and essential to that fortune is the high standard of care we have access to via our public hospital.

Over the next month, we have the chance to help boost the quality of that care and the wellbeing of local families, and donations don’t come much more valuable than that.

Northeast Health’s timely launch of their appeal for essential newborn baby equipment brings to our attention the value of appropriate support to newborns and their mothers.

Without it, we simply wouldn’t be able to have the luxury of accessing maternity care just a few minutes away rather than risking an extra hour in uncomfortable transport for a mother about to give birth.

The hospital not only serves our local needs, but it is the point of maternity care for such a large and wideranging area in the region, and that doesn’t include the mass visitation we experience throughout holiday seasons.

Whether it be a donation big or small, anything we can give to those on the frontline to giving our newest community members the help they need is vital.

Our neonatal staff need to have the the most modern, up-to-date equipment available to provide the best maternal care possible for our newborns.

Farmer groups unite for clean energy access THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) and Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) have united to call for fair regional power.

To bring regional poles and wires and other infrastructure to a better service level will see an investment of $3.6 billion from Powercor.

Some of the proposed upgrades include: • $63 million to upgrade Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) lines; • $2.2 million for energy literacy programs; • $2.3 million for expert energy advisory services; • $5.3 million for communities to enhance inclusion in the renewable energy shift; • 6.5 million for vulnerable customer assistance to support electrification.

Powercor estimates that the $3.6bn of enhancements would result in an increase of approximately $4 per year on household bills but it would give country people the same access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy that city people have.

The country people who grow our food and power our cities deserve upgraded poles and wires so they can have a reliable energy supply.

Country people and farmers want to take

part in the clean energy shift, and benefit from it, and they need upgraded poles and wires to be able to do that.

There’s not much point putting solar panels on your roof if you can’t export any electricity because the power line near your house is too small to take the power from your panels.

This investment would strengthen local economies and cut downtime during storms and heatwaves.

It’s crucial local energy networks are able to give regional Victorians fair access to reliable electricity.

Rural Victorians are doing the heavy lifting in the clean energy shift by hosting transmission lines, wind turbines, and solar farms.

Farmers and country people deserve updated poles, wires and basic electricity infrastructure in our communities that give us the secure and reliable energy we need to run our homes and businesses.

FCA and Powercor, hosted the Rural and Regional Energy Summit in Bendigo last October.

The summit brought together Powercor customers from Western Victoria to discuss the 2026-31 Regulatory Reset and heard from nowVFF President, Brett Hosking. Participants agreed on the need for significant upgrades to the region’s energy infrastructure.

City’s shooting star fondly remembered

Joyce Helen Asquith: 24 January, 1935 - 27 April, 2025

WANGARATTA and its rifle clubs lost a much-loved resident and celebrated member when Joyce Asquith passed away last month.

A life member of both the Wangaratta Rifle Club and the Wangaratta Small Bore Rifle Club, and of the Victorian Rifle Association and Target Rifle Association, Joyce was a dedicated sportswoman who enjoyed all aspects of rifle shooting, was an amazing markswoman and a great club contributor.

She filled roles including secretary, treasurer, handicapper and selection committee member over many years, and is also remembered for the wonderful sandwiches she would contribute to afternoon teas.

Joyce, who represented both full bore and small bore shooting at state level, joined the Wangaratta Small Bore Rifle Club in 1955.

In 1978, she joined the Wangaratta Rifle Club, advancing to the roles of club handicapper (a position she held from 1980 to 2021) and vice-captain within a couple of years.

In 2004-’05 she served as club captain, and also captained the Victorian ladies team.

The third daughter of Laurence and Edith Ramage, and younger sister to Dawn and Kathleen, Joyce was born on 24 January, 1935.

She attended Chisholm Street Primary School and Wangaratta High School, and married her best mate, Reg Asquith, on 27 April, 1957.

Ten months later, the couple moved into a house in O’Meara Street which had been carefully constructed

by Joyce’s builder father.

Her early working life was spent with a prominent local accounting firm as a clerk, and it was there that Joyce developed the skills of adding and subtracting with impeccable accuracy that would be used to the benefit of local rifle clubs for many years as she kept club records, scores and handicapping details.

Her accuracy and attention to detail was second to none, and she also became a regular visitor to the Wangaratta Chronicle office, delivering rifle club notes for publication in the paper.

Joyce had many passions in life - among them fishing, hunting and spending time camping with Reg and his brother Kevin, especially at Bundalong.

Showing and judging dogs, particularly labradors, was a favourite pastime, and Joyce was extremely proud when her dog Task was named grand champion at the Royal Melbourne Show.

A strong advocate of wildlife and an avid supporter of the RSPCA, Joyce loved feeding local birdlife, especially magpies and kookaburras.

She was a member of the Wangaratta Kennel Club, a guitarist in her early days, and in more recent years she relished playing Lifeball - doing her best to score a goal or two each week.

Target shooting was a huge part of Joyce’s life, and at the Wangaratta Rifle Club range at Glenrowan she kept scores, cleaned the clubhouse and ablutions block and produced afternoon tea, including her famous ham and corned beef sandwiches.

Joyce and Reg, along with Don Doig, went on to become great mentors to many young people who joined the club, and her record as a shooter speaks for itself.

She was at one point selected in the state small bore team, and had the honour of competing in the Slazenger Cup event contested by the 20 best shots in Australia.

While Jim Brock was undoubtedly local and state champion in that era, winning a string of championships, Joyce managed to break through to win the club title twice over a 20year period.

As time went on, she concentrated on full bore shooting; she enjoyed the process of scoring for each other and following the fortunes of and mingling with other competitors.

Joyce represented the Victorian women’s team on 10 occasions, winning the national titles three times, and was selected in the Australian women’s teams in 1988, ‘89 and ‘91.

Shooting took Joyce at least six times to New Zealand, where she was proud to wear the green and gold.

Free screenings next week of ‘Live the life you please’

FILM screenings in Wangaratta next week hope to encourage open conversations about end of life decisions.

The film is being run in conjunction with this year’s National Palliative Care Week, from 11 to 17 May, and its campaign of “What’s your plan?”

It’s a direct approach to Australians and their loved ones to talk about what matters most at the end of life and to make a plan that empowers and respects their choices during the last years, months, and days of life.

To raise awareness about the important issue, the Northeast Health Wangaratta Community Palliative care team will screenings of the highly acclaimed film, ‘Live the life you please’.

The film is about living and dying in Australia and explores the nature of palliative care through a series of personal stories.

It might change the way you think about the last chapter of life.

The film will be screened on Thursday, 15 May at 3.30pm at NHW Melbourne teaching learning centre, and on Friday, 16 May at the Wangaratta Library Community Room.

Funding climate solutions THE Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal (FRRR) are inviting applications from not-for-profit groups (NFPs) in remote, rural and regional communities for funding to support projects that reduce emissions and address the impacts of climate change.

FRRR’s Community Led Climate Solutions program (CLCS) is offering grants to NFPs via two streams, with a total funding pool of $650,000 available for initiatives that address climate change at a local level.

Grants in either stream

can be used for a range of purposes, including to educate local people; adopt clean energy practices; support First Nations climate focused initiatives; reduce emissions; implement low carbon power sources; embrace reuse and regenerative practices; support solutions that deliver sustainable agriculture and food systems; encourage biodiverse ecosystems; or ensuring the transition is just for all.

Sarah Matthee, climate solutions portfolio lead at FRRR, said the CLCS program

was flexible and funds a wide range of initiatives because FRRR recognises that different communities are at different stages of their climate journey.

Performers ready for 2025 Wangaratta Festival of Dance

By ANITA MCPHERSON THE 2025 Wangaratta Festival of Dance kicks off at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre on Friday, 16 May and runs over five big days.

Now in its 27th year, the event brings together young dancers from across the region and beyond to perform and compete as soloists and in troupes in their chosen dance styles.

Hundreds of competitors will take part in the event which is spread over two weekends, showcasing their dance, showmanship and choreography skills across some 12 genres including classical ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary hip hop, musical theatre and lyrical styles.

Coordinating the event is considerable undertaking for festival committee president Terri Dillow and the team who work with up to 900 dancers and their families and studios, who may have prepared for up to a year for the event.

Terri said entries opened in February for this year’s competition and were fully subscribed in 20 minutes, and while many local danc-

“We usually have a full house on our troupe day, and

it’s free entry, so anyone can come and watch.”

This year’s adjudicator will be Tania Attard-O’Dwyer, described as a dance and theatre powerhouse, with a career spanning over 35 years

Terri said a lot of care goes into creating a positive, professional experience for dancers including carefully selecting their adjudicators, booking them in advance, and asking them not to judge other local competitions for three months beforehand, so they will have “fresh eyes and a fair perspective”.

While a small committee of five brings the festival together, Terri said technological improvements have greatly assisted them with the process, as has having nearly 20 years of her own experience.

“It’s fairly easy for me because I’ve been doing it for such a long time, so it just happens,” she said.

Express your inner artistry at Benalla Art Gallery workshops OVER the coming months, Benalla Art Gallery presents a range of workshops designed to ignite creativity, allowing participants to explore different mediums to create individual, unique art works.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, jewellery designer and experienced teacher Sue Plumb will lead a workshop on Saturday, 10 May from 10am to 1pm in the Patricia (Pat) Gardner Studio.

Participants will use traditional jewellery-making tools and techniques to craft a simple pendant necklace from a range of materials and metals, including silver.

“You will have an opportunity to stamp a message to yourself or someone close to your heart for this special day,” Sue said.

“Maybe it is about your children, your mother, mothering, or just love.”

Cost is $90 for members, $100 non-members.

Sue’s jewellery can also be viewed and purchased in the gallery shop for the remainder of the month.

‘Flowers in Oils’, a workshop with Strathbogie-based artist Anna Mackrell, will be held on Saturday, 17 May from 11am to 3pm in the Patricia (Pat) Gardner Studio.

Join Anna for a workshop exploring her practice and more specifically her techniques and approach to painting flowers with oils.

Coinciding with her exhibition in the Simpson Gallery, this workshop will cover both charcoal and painting mediums, reflective of Anna’s prolific body of work.

IN BLOOM: The ‘Flower in Oils’ workshop will be led by artist Anna Mackrell.

All materials, including oil paints and canvases, will be provided.

A fun series of mosaic workshops led by experienced artist Kate van Nooten

will be held on Saturday, 14 June and Saturday, 21 June from 10.30am to 2pm in the Patricia (Pat) Gardner Studio.

The series will begin with an introduction to mosaic tools, materials, process and design, before selecting

a piece of pre-cut cementsheet as a base.

Participants will choose a colour scheme to begin the mosaic process.

Once complete and the grout solidifies, paint is added to the surrounds of the piece.

Kate van Nooten began making mosaics in 2004, joining a team working alongside Melbourne sculptor, Deborah Halpern, including assisting with the restoration of the NGV’s Angel sculpture at Birrarung Marr.

All materials will be provided.

Cost is $140 for members, $150 non-members.

Time capsule to be unearthed on Saturday

A TIME capsule originally buried by the Rotary Club of Appin Park in January, 1977 will be unearthed on Saturday in an event at Wangaratta’s Rotary Park.

The 11am gathering hosted by the Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta will feature the opening of the capsule and the recovery of envelopes by subscribers to a club fundraiser held 48 years ago.

The time capsule was originally buried on the corner of Rowan and Baker streets, where Morris Bros Real Estate now operates, and was relocated some time ago to Rotary Park, which borders Evans, Swan and Edwards streets.

It was sealed on 28 January, 1977 by then-City of Wangaratta Mayor Kevin Howard.

Saturday’s celebrations surrounding the opening will include a barbecue in the pleasant surrounds of Rotary Park from 11am.

Stepping toward more reliable, cost-effective renewable energy

By BEN McGOWAN for Electrify Wangaratta INDIGO Power installed one of the first community batteries in Yackandandah in 2021.

Since then, community batteries have gained traction as a practical solution to the challenges faced by rural and regional communities in the energy transition.

Community batteries are an essential tool in the broader push towards renewable energy, particularly for areas with plenty of solar penetration.

The rise of rooftop solar across Victoria has created both opportunities and challenges.

More solar generation often exceeds local electricity demand, so there’s an overabundance of energy that the grid cannot immediately absorb.

The mismatch between supply and demand can cause voltage rises, frequency imbalances, and place pressure on existing grid infrastructure.

When this happens, grid operators may need to limit solar exports, resulting in wasted clean, renewable energy.

Over-generation is particularly common during the day when solar energy is abundant but demand is low.

The issue of grid stability is intensified as demand peaks in the evening when solar production is low.

Community batteries offer a practical solution to these problems.

These batteries store excess solar energy generated during the day and release it in the evening when demand rises.

By discharging the stored energy during peak times, community batteries help smooth out the supply/demand fluctuations, so they create a more stable and reliable energy system.

ENERGY SAVER: Community batteries can release energy accumulated from the day at night when consumer demand is higher.

It also addresses the issue of wasted solar energy, which is generated but not required at the home site of generation.

It cannot be exported and shared with the local community.

This boom-and-bust solar cycle contributes to instability in electricity prices.

Daytime prices drop when solar energy is abundant and feed-in tariffs fall, only to surge in the evening as demand rises and solar generation fades.

This unpredictability makes it harder for retailers to hedge effectively, often leading to higher costs during peak times across the late afternoon and early evening.

Community batteries can help

manage these price peaks by storing cheap solar energy when it is plentiful and releasing it when demand - and prices - are at their highest.

Managing the risk of a volatile electricity supply market with expensive evening peak prices is expected to lead to lower wholesale electricity costs, which can be handed onto customers.

Wangaratta is one of eight towns expected to benefit from this innovative approach of a community battery.

Indigo Power has prepared a business case for a community battery in Wangaratta and has recently won funding from the Australian Renewable Energy

New exhibition

by Marie Salinger explores Lunasa A NEW exhibition of paintings by resident artist Marie Salinger has opened at Wangaratta’s Art Gallery on Ovens.

Inspired by Lúnasa, a word which refers to a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of the harvest season, Marie said the creative “seeds” for the series of paintings were “germinated” during an artist residency at the Museum of Loss and Renewal in Collemacchia, Italy, last year.

On return to her Beechworth studio at Mayday Hills, Marie said she began the process of developing her ideas into something more substantial.

“This creative ‘harvest’ has produced vibrant acrylic paintings in-

corporating collaged monoprints which were created in the Italian TMOLAR studio,” she said.

“The works explore the natural world as well as worlds that lie hidden just beyond our perception and invite the viewer to contemplate what might be just below the surface.”

Marie is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work echoes the organic qualities of nature and explores the notion of transience, liminal spaces, and the interconnectedness of all life forms.

Marie said the residency in Italy

offered her the opportunity to go deeper into her practice and to be open to developing her artistic expression and voice.

She said immersing herself fully also gave her the time and space to take risks, experiment with compositional elements, to innovate and to learn, which, as an emerging artist, was “an extraordinary gift.”

Lunasa is open now at the Art Gallery on Ovens in the laneway off Murphy Street and runs until Monday, 19 May, with Marie in attendance each day.

An opening celebration will be held this Saturday, 10 May from 12pm to 2pm, with all welcome to come along and find out more about Marie and her art practice.

Ladies high tea raised $2000 for WWII nurses’ memorial SHARING HISTORY: Jan Vincent’s poignant speech described the work of the group who are honouring the nurses’ memories.

TEAM EFFORT: Oxley residents Margot Ingwersen and Annette Woods welcomed guests to the beautifully decorated hall.

THE annual Ladies High Tea was held in the historic Oxley Shire Hall on Saturday, 3 May, raising $2000 to support a local memorial.

The 70 ladies present were greeted with a glass of champagne as they entered the hall, beautifully set up with lace tablecloths, antique crockery, flowers and delicious sweet and savoury treats, all home made and donated by the Oxley community.

On behalf of the Oxley Residents’ Association and the Oxley Shire Hall committee, Erica Pike welcomed the guests, including Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Irene Grant, before introducing guest speaker Jan Vincent.

Jan told the poignant story of the Cheshunt World War II nurses Caroline Ennis and Dorothy “Bud” Elmes - who died tragically at Bangka Island in 1942 as victims of war.

Busts of these two courageous women are to be erected at the Oxley Memorial Park, where their names are on the Cenotaph.

Descendants of the nurses to be honoured were present at the event.

The Oxley Residents’ Association and Oxley Shire Hall committee were proud to be able to donate the $2000 proceeds of the high tea to support this worthy cause.

Nominations open to recognise Victorian seniors THE State Government is encouraging all Victorians to recognise the valuable contributions of older members of the community by nominating them for the 2025 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.

Nominations are now open for this year’s awards, which celebrate older Victorians who generously share their time, skills and experience to benefit their communities.

Minister for ageing Ingrid Stitt said the awards are about shining a light on the incredible efforts of seniors

who make a difference every day.

Mandy Reich - a caring mother and carer for all OBITUARY: AMANDA ‘MANDY’ REICH

AMANDA Magdalene Jericho was born in 1934 at Cleve S.A. Her grandparents history was German as well, immigrating to Australia in 1870.

She met Manfred Reich, a migrant from Berlin, having just come through Bonegilla migrant camp in 1958.

They bought a housing block in the West End of Wangaratta and returned to Berlin to get married in Germany.

In 1962 Amanda and Manfred returned to Wangaratta and 1963 saw the start of building their new house.

Three children were born: Simon - Henry - Wendy - all went to school in Wangaratta and are now spread all over Australia.

Simon, an artist in filmmaking, acclaimed musician and graphic design, just produced “Bonegilla-The migrant’s journey” at the WPAC to sellout crowds.

Henry runs a furniture business in Buderim QLD and Wendy is a schoolteacher in Melbourne.

This might sound like a big introduction to a life lived in Wangaratta but more is to follow.

Behind every family (husband – children - successful business) is a wife that holds it all together and that was Mandy.

When in nursing homes, she was called Amanda the German name but before her sickness she was Mandy to all and sundry.

The family home was finished in 1965 and they have lived in it until today.

“That was our ‘forever home’ between all the trips we took to Germany and beyond, always coming back to good old Wangaratta our resting place,” Manfred said.

When school was finished for the children, they went off to other places to pursue their dreams.

That’s understandable as they forged their own identity.

“As a father and mother, we would say well done,” Manfred said.

Mandy, as a wife, kept the house fires burning, not only for the family, but also for others who needed some home cooking, baking or amazing meals.

Manfred pursued his profession as interior decorator in the North East of Victoria.

While he was on his rounds working, Mandy was always looking after the children and the customers.

“I, Manfred, thank the Lord that I found a woman that has fulfilled everything I dreamed of and even more,” he said.

Both Mandy and Manfred took over the Wangaratta Christian Book Centre and operated it for 17 and a half years.

The Wangaratta Christian Book Centre was the Bible Society distribution center for the North East.

The couple encouraged people to read the scriptures.

Mandy and Manfred started a youth drop-in centre in the middle of Reid Street resulting in up to 100 young folk coming in and spending hours playing games, drinking coffee and tea all supplied by the traders of Wangaratta and rent was paid by 10 churches.

They had a team of 65 young and old people to help, including Mandy organising the kitchen.

They also, once a month, held a church service in the various places of worship including pubs.

In all of these avenues Mandy was the catalyst.

Both Mandy and Manfred taught religious education for 20 years in the schools around the North East, running the floorcoverings - bookshop - church services, friendship groups as well as youth outings.

In a successful marriage both partners will and must pull together or it will not work.

“I just thank our God and Master, that he gave me a wonderful wife like Mandy, so far away from my birthplace in Germany,” Manfred said.

“To make all these things come to pass, a successful family, running diverse businesses, help needy people, doing preaching, evangelising and visiting those in need around Wan-

garatta, all of this would not have been possible had it not been for a supportive and hands on wife like Mandy.

“She was an avid gardener, loved plants and trees, created fauna displays around the front and back of our house.

“Mandy was an avid seamstress for our children and others as well as a housecleaner for the Wangaratta council.

“We love her dearly and she will be very sadly missed.

“Thank you, dear God. “Mandy rest in peace.”

The celebration of Mandy’s life will be held at Mason Park Chapel, 95 Mason Street, Wangaratta at 2pm Thursday, 22 May. Manfred requested those attending to wear, if possible, red or blue to send Mandy off in a colourful way.

First 100 days vital to make healthcare affordable A NATIONAL peak body for health is pushing the reelected federal Labor government to capitalise on its first 100 days to make healthcare more affordable, accessible, and consumer-centric.

As the cost of living continues to climb, coupled with extensive wait times and a complicated health system, Consumers Health Forum of Australia (CHF) emphasised the urgent need for action.

CHF CEO Dr Elizabeth Deveny said the government’s re-election hinged on promises of healthcare reform and investment.

“Importantly the voices and needs of healthcare consumers must be involved as the government’s election promises are rolled out,” Dr Deveny said.

CHF is calling on the government to prioritise several key areas.

They want the government to work with consumers and GPs to achieve the goal of 90 per cent of GP visits bulk billed by 2030.

On cheaper medicines, CHF wants the government to publicise the upcoming $25 PBS co-payment cap so consumers can plan and benefit.

CHF also wants the government to introduce a system for automatic application of Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Safety Net pricing.

The expansion of urgent care clinics should coincide with an independent, consumerfocused review of existing clinics to ensure services are meeting expectations.

They have also called on the government to fund CHF to roll out the Understanding Medicare – Understanding Your Health program and support the Coalition for Preventative Health Funding to move toward the 5 per cent target of total health expenditure by 2030.

Finally, CHF calls for progress towards universal dental care, starting with seniors and low-income dental schemes linked to concession cards.

They also call for increased funding for public dental services.

And they call for the appointment of a Commonwealth chief dental/oral health officer, recognising oral health as a core component of overall healthcare.

A walk through the bush in the Warby Range, Killawarra and the hills around Chiltern and Eldorado can provide rewarding sightings.

Probus clubs keeping busy WANGARATTA WEST COMBINED PROBUS AT the April meeting, president Greg Porter inducted new member Mary Alesiani into the club.

Mary was welcomed with acclamation.

Several interested guests were also welcomed to the meeting.

Members of regular groups including dolphins, garden group, walkers and talkers, movie group and Sunday lunches to name a few - are enjoying their activities.

Several members recently enjoyed a cruise from Sydney along the coast to Port Douglas and another group of members and friends are about to depart on a trip to Singapore.

In July, there is a trip to Alice Springs and Uluru being organised.

The April meeting had an Easter theme with several members wearing their Easter bunny ears.

Members guessed how many tiny eggs were in a container, and others won lovely hampers of Easter goodies on the draw of the lucky ticket.

Member John Duncan, originally from Liverpool UK, was the very entertaining guest speaker on the day.

John told of his experiences during WWII, many of them incongruous.

A number of members are not well at present; the club wishes them a speedy recovery.

WANGARATTA CENTRAL COMBINED PROBUS THE general meeting of the Wangaratta Central Combined Probus Club was held on Friday, 17 April at the Wangaratta Bowls Club, Park Lane Wangaratta.

The meeting opened at 10am by new president Sally Haynes who welcomed those members present and guest Keith Fyffe.

The current membership is 73.

Coming events for the club include on 22 May, a ‘mystery tour’.

Members are required to meet at Wareena Park in Swan Street at 9.30am.

A 10-day Norfolk Island Tour is planned for 2 September, priced at $5645.

Also planned is a six-night Princess Cruise starting Monday, 20 October through Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney.

The inside cabin costs $1629 per person.

Kia Sorento comes with a face-lift and hybrid variants

■ IMPROVEMENTS: With interior and exterior design inspired by the EV9, the Sorento boasts an updated look.

By CHRIS RILEY, MARQUE MOTORING IT’s becoming harder to tell internal combustion from electric vehicles, and even more difficult to identify the in-betweeners - the hybrids and plug-in hybrids that combine technologies.

The new product-enhanced Sorento takes its styling cues from the fullyelectric EV9 and sees changes to the exterior and interior design, comfort and convenience technology, with additional safety features thrown in.

New Sorento offers a range of drivetrains including hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, which arrive in top-spec GT-Line guise only, adding to the price of the technology - or perhaps absorbing the cost.

Service is due every 12 months or 10,000km.

STYLING Taking design cues from the EV9, the face-lifted Sorento line-up boasts a restyled face, as well as a new-look lower bumper and revised LED tail-lights at the rear.

Inside, a larger 12.3-inch infotainment system with the latest ‘ccNC’ software brings wireless functionality to both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The sweeping, ultra-wide display panel also houses a second 12.3-inch screen for the instrumentation, plus a smaller 5.0-inch screen for the aircon which separates them.

The latter replicates the physical buttons that sit under the screen and can also

be used to control the climate system.

GT-Line also offers a Digital Centre Mirror (DCM) which lets users switch between a standard rear view mirror and a camera display for maximum rear visibility without any heads or headrests blocking the view.

Other new additions include a revised shift-by-wire gear selector and new USBC charging ports.

Kia Connect telematics has also been added, allowing improved remote car controls via smartphone.

However, the “enhancements” have largely been cosmetic, with no changes to the actual hybrid drivetrains which power the large, seven-seat wagon.

Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloys, quilted Nappa leather, two-zone climate air, rear air outlets and controls, heated steering wheel, power adjust front seats with heating and cooling, plus heated outer second row seats, alloy sports pedals, door scuff strips and a power-operated panoramic sunroof.

There’s also head-up display, smart cruise control, passenger talk intercom, remote smart parking assist, auto lights and wipers, auto-dip on reverse mirrors, interior mood lighting, eight cupholders and four bottle holders, second row sunscreens, privacy glass (rear windows and tailgate) plus a hands-free power tailgate.

Parking Distance Warning (front, side and rear) has been added on side detection zones to provide a more comprehensive warning system that will warn the driver when a collision is likely during parking.

Sorento offers four ISOFix and five top tether child restraint anchor points.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The combined output of the hybrid is 169kW of power and 350Nm of torque, while the plug-in with a more powerful electric motor delivers 195kW and 350Nm. While both get the same six-speed ‘Sports-Matic’ transmission, the hybrid comes in front- and all-wheel drive, while the top-of-the-

line plug-in is all-wheel drive only.

DRIVING Sorento gets better with every outing.

GT-Line especially looks and feels like the premium product that it is and deserves a larger slice of the cake.

But it currently trails the Toyota Prado, Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X in the sales race.

At a length of 4185mm and with a 2815mm wheelbase, Sorento can seat seven in relative comfort, but is still no replacement for a purposebuilt people mover.

While the hybrid and plugin hybrid versions of Sorento are based on the same 1.6-litre turbocharged fourcylinder engine, the electric assistance each receives is substantially different.

There are three drive modes - Eco, Sport and Smart mode.

The PHEV can perform as an electric vehicle, hybrid or internal combustion vehicle.

On paper it’s got all the bases covered.

Fuel consumption is a claimed 5.4L/100km for the front-drive, 5.7L/100km for the all-wheel drive and 1.6L/100km for the plug-in allwheel drive hybrid.

This compares with 6.0L/100km for the turbo-diesel and 9.8L/100km for the 3.5-litre petrol V6 engines which are also offered.

However, to achieve 1.6L/100km the plug-in must be recharged every 100km.

The plug-in’s all-electric range is 68km - 57km under the more realistic WLTP standard.

The small 14 kWh lithiumion polymer battery pack is secreted under the second row of seats and can be charged via AC single-phase power.

It will take as little as three hours and 25 minutes to charge from 15 to 95 per cent.

We clocked up 470km at a rate of 6.8L/100km.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to recharge the battery and to be frank, this will happen with most drivers, which negates the big outlay for the PHEV in the first place.

Anecdotally, many lease vehicles are returned with the charge cable untouched.

The trip computer in our test vehicle showed a longterm average of 6.4L/100km and it takes premium 95 unleaded.

Questions of charging aside, the PHEV is likeable and easy to drive, if not entirely convincing when it comes to performance.

With an emphasis on fuel economy, it’s more a case of being adequate rather than responding strongly to the

throttle in a straight line – for example overtaking.

If you’re okay with this read on, otherwise Kia still offers diesel and petrol-V6 alternatives that will deliver higher levels of performance.

The steering is light and it is easy to manoeuvre when it comes to parking.

The ride for the most part is pretty good and a reflection of Kia’s local tuning efforts, occasionally delivering a sharper than expected response depending on the surface you are travelling over.

Forget the digital rear vision mirror if you wear multifocal glasses, though.

It is almost impossible to bring into focus quickly and nauseating when you get there.

SUMMING UP The Sorento PHEV will appeal to buyers who want to put a foot in the electric pool, but don’t want to go in for a swim.

The price won’t!

Rangers unveil Indigenous jersey for proud junior baseballers

WANGARATTA’s junior baseballers will be the envy of the league after the club unveiled a new Indigenous design for their playing jerseys.

At a special ceremony after junior training on Wednesday evening at the club’s base at Targoora Park, the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club revealed their new junior jerseys, the club’s vibrant orange top adorned with grey Indigenous designs.

Created by local Bpangerang man, artist and former Ranger Kevin Cooper, the jersey incorporates artwork and themes surrounding community, unity, and young people learning from elders.

“This design shows the exact image of the King River and the Ovens River as seen by the creator, the natural meeting place Wangaratta that has been utilised by the Traditional Owners for hundreds of years,” he said.

“We hope it serves as a meaningful contribution to reconciliation, while celebrating the vibrant cultural heritage of the local Aboriginal community.”

Preuzzo said the club was fortunate to have such a renowned local Indigenous artist as a former player.

“We’re pretty honoured to have Kev Cooper come as a Bpangerang artist and also a former player, he knows what it takes to come up as a junior and play as a senior,” she said.

“It’s very much a family club, a lot of the young kids are playing with their parents, which is lovely to see.”

Rangers experience mixed fortunes in home park fixture

ROUND two of the North Eastern Baseball Association was played in Wangaratta at Targoora Park on Sunday with all teams playing at the one venue.

Rangers Orange in the under 12s only had seven players turn up, but everyone got at least two safe hits off the bat but were unable to find the gaps in the field with the opposition getting the lead runner out.

Porepunkah won 10-2.

In the other under 12s game, Rangers Black had a close game with Albury Bears Gold.

Although Rangers kept getting safe hits, Bears’ fielding was better to get the outs defeating Rangers Black 28-8.

Tia Wells, Kyah Currie and Hudson Kiker all had three safe hits for Rangers.

In C Grade, Wangaratta Rangers Black played Porepunkah Panthers.

Panthers batted first, with their first batter getting on base from a walk they came home before Rangers’ pitcher found the strike zone.

Panthers then started to hit safely, but left the bases loaded when their third out was lost.

Rangers Black batted through eight batters in their first inning to score two runs but they too left bases loaded when they lost their third out.

With two outs and one run in, Panthers started to bat a bit better and brought in an-

other five runs before they lost their third out.

They added another four runs to take the lead which they held for the rest of the game.

Rangers Black defeated Panthers 9-7.

Rangers Black played Bears Gold in one of the two B grade games.

The Bears got their first batter on base with a two base hit to right field, but he was left out there when they lost their next three batters.

Rangers leadoff batter hit a three baser to leftfield, then came home when their next batter was caught stealing, then brought in one more run to lead two runs to zip.

Bears only had four batters face the pitcher before they lost their three outs.

With one run in and two runners out, Rangers Black stepped up a gear and brought in another three runs before losing their third out and take back the lead.

Neither team added to their score in the last dig and Rangers Black won by two runs, 8-6.

In the other B grade game, Rangers Orange played Porepunkah Panthers.

Panthers batted first and got their first two batters home before they lost their third out with only six batters facing the plate.

Rangers Orange scored four runs for the dig to trail

by just one run going into the fourth.

Panthers could only score one more run in their next three innings while Rangers Orange came home running, adding another seven runs in

their turns at bat to win 1210.

The A grade game against Rangers Orange and Panthers saw Panthers’ leadoff batter come home to score their only run for the dig before they lost their third out.

The Orange leadoff batter was put out at first, but the team started to bat well.

With one out, two runs in and a runner on second, Oranges fifth batter, Brendon Cameron hit a home run, bringing in two runs and another two runs were added before they lost their third out.

Orange scored another two runs in their second innings while Panthers brought in one to trail Orange two runs to eight at the top of the third inning.

Safe hits were hard to get in the next two inning for either side.

Panthers brought in two more runs in their next turn at bat, and Orange added four to their score to end the game winning 12-4.

Wangaratta Rangers Black A grade and the under 15s had the bye.

A NUMBER of Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club players are heading to Berri, South Australia to play in a three-day tennis tournament on 17, 18 and 19 May. It marks 37 years of the annual event, which sees upwards of 800 players from across the nation each year.

A few members of the Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club will be travelling to Berri for the fourth time.

This year team members Geoff Allen, Peter Ablazej, Noel Boyd, Phil Dryden and Russel O’Brien are dedicating their participation to Mick Keogh.

“Mick is a legend of the Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club and at 87 years old, is still playing very competitive tennis,” team manager Noel Boyd said.

“The boys decided to play this year in recognition of Mick’s longevity and consequently will play in Berri under the name of ‘Mates of Mr Mick’.”

Noel said he thinks Mick might be the oldest male player to play in the tournament, and he and the team are ready to play alongside him in spirit.

Non-stop, riveting action at Oxley social table tennis WHILE the NRL held its Magic Round last weekend, nothing could have been more magical than the atmosphere in the Oxley Hall, where 19 players, including three ‘newbies’ arrived in high spirits to take part in the action at the Oxley social table tennis competition last Monday night.

Ripping straight into action, Alison Stephens and Paul Lawrence stepped up to the plate to take on June Uebergang and Martin Butcher in a game which displayed shot-making of all standards and innovation.

Plenty of ‘gotchas’ and the occasional swish and miss shots ensured the contest was tightly fought from the first point.

The lead fluctuated throughout the game, but ultimately one pair finally won the tie-breaker.

A great hit-out was on show when ‘new boy’ Peter Day and ‘old boy’ Neil Brock challenged ‘fly-bynight’ Kate Cole and ‘hard drive’ Clive Brooker to a tenacious test of talent and durability.

Each player played to their different styles of action to test their opponents’ ability in serving and stroke-making, with Clive and Peter’s

After a browbeater effort by all, the ‘long and the short of it’ saw Kate and Clive win narrowly.

Planning their course of action were Neil Spurgeon and William Bonwick, who plated up to ‘long time no see’ Jason Mullins and ‘perennial’ Paul Lawrence in a

game from which everyone learned a thing or two.

Red-hot action was delivered by both pairs, and with each player capitalising on his partner’s ‘set-ups’ from which to play the ‘killer shot’, it was a feast of fun for players and onlookers alike.

No scores were recorded.

After having each played their ‘umpteenth’ game, ‘table draper’ Janet Heath lined

up alongside ‘no stopping’ Adrian Brunken in a very noisy and entertaining encounter against ‘LOL’ Lucy Uebergang and ‘the man who maps out his delivery’, Graham Stephens.

From start to finish, it was a battle of the brave, with laughter deafening in both victory and loss of points.

But the standard of stroke playing, table coverage and out-smarting their opponents was no joke, as each player delivered a creditable performance which was deemed a win for all.

Another evening of physical and social enjoyment was followed by a cuppa and supper.

Adults and secondary students of all ages and abilities are most welcome to join the group which meets at the Oxley hall each Monday night, beginning at 7pm.

Dragons’ courage holds true WANGARATTA Dragons Hockey Club teams took to the field to contest Hockey Albury Wodonga round five for the seniors and round two for the juniors.

DIVISION TWO MEN It was another hard-fought game for the men’s div two team.

Wodonga are a strong team in midfield but the Dragons worked hard all the first quarter to defend and have some attempts at goal.

Devils striving to go three in a row

FOR the first time this season, Wangaratta City has a chance to seal a hat-trick of wins in the division one men’s competition.

It’s been a slow start to the year, but the senior Devils are starting to find some tangible growth, having notched up two wins in as many weeks in emphatic fashion.

The Devils ran rampant over Twin City Wanderers 6-1 a fortnight ago, and are fresh off a 4-1 result over Wodonga Heart.

While senior coach Vitaly Leschen said the results were “expected” against two of the lower ranked teams, he said it was a positive to gain some momentum.

“It’s good to get two wins under our belt, it’s good for a bit of morale and confidence,” he said.

“In games like the weekend and the week before, you’re probably battling yourself more than the opposition.

“Both the last two weeks we’ve absolutely dominated, which is what we want to see and what we want to take into the weekend.

“We need to prove ourselves up against a more competitive team, it’s an opportunity for the boys to get a result on the weekend.”

This weekend, the Devils will be up against Albury Hotspurs, who currently sit fifth on the ladder and are playing exceptionally well with just the two losses for the year.

“This weekend will be interesting, Hotspurs have been going quite well, it’s a good test,” Leschen said.

“I would say Hotspurs this year are one of the teams who are going to be up there by the looks of things.

“I know they’ve got a lot of

young players across from the Murray set-up which is good to see – Hotspurs, for a few years now, haven’t been up at the top end of the table.

“It’ll be a good contest, but all niceties aside, hopefully we walk away with the chocolates, but it’s going to be a very good test.”

Leschen said the mix of youth and experience in the Devils’ set up has been helping the side grow week on week.

“Across the pitch we’ve been getting a bit better balance, the pieces are falling into place more now in terms of our best 11 and overall team chemistry.

“Keenan’s [Peruzzo] a good young kid, he’s been around the club for a few years in the junior set-up - it’s good to get exposure for a couple of these younger kids, like Keenan, Fraser [D’Agostino], Jacob Saunders, the next generation of Wangaratta lo-

Brief respite for Magpies and Rovers netballers IT’S been a tough start for both Wangaratta clubs in the 2024 Ovens and Murray A grade netball season with two wins between them in their first five games.

And both of those went to Wangaratta Magpies leaving the Hawks yet to open their account.

After this weekend’s round all teams would have completed five games each and the state-of-play should be a little clearer although the competition for a tip five spot will be extremely competitive until the midway point of the season at the completion of round nine.

At this stage, North Albury

and Corowa-Rutherglen are the only undefeated teams and don’t play each other until round eight, however, before then the Hoppers face Wodonga Raiders (currently fourth) and then the Magpies, who only lost to Corowa-Rutherglen by a goal in the opening round, while the Roos play teams outside the top five.

After this weekend’s bye, Wangaratta Magpies meet three teams above them in succession and could put themselves well in contention if they win each one; basically, they still have their destiny in their hands.

They also have the depth with each of their teams in

the lower grades all in top four positions.

Wangaratta Rovers have different aims to mark their progress as they continue their overall strengthening of their netball program.

Of course every side wants to win games but Rovers remain focused on solidifying their game plan with a relatively young squad so it is consistently competitive at the highest level of the competition.

Similar to their crosslaneway rivals, the Hawks B, C and 17 and Under teams are also in top five positions so the foundations are well and truly their to work towards their goals.

By NATHAN DE VRIES THE season may already be welcoming round seven of competition, but it’s a long overdue homecoming for Benalla All Blacks, who are amped up for their second home game of the year.

Barring round three, the Panthers have played away or had the bye every single week so far, getting the bulk of their travel out of the way early.

This weekend, they’re back at Friendlies Oval, with the A grade netball squad

licking their lips at the prospect of taking on a youthful and athletic Moyhu squad.

The A grade Panthers sit ninth overall with a record of 1-4, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at them.

“We are having so much fun it’s ridiculous,” A grade co-coach Georgia Spencer said.

“Obviously everyone wants to get wins on the board, but having our five netball teams back, I don’t think anything can get us down even if we don’t get the wins on the board.

“The feeling down at the club between everyone is great.”

On top of the travel baked into the fixture for Benalla, they’ve also been dealt a tough hand in terms of opponents.

The Panthers have taken on Tarrawingee and Goorambat - both of whom are undefeated - as well as reigning premiers Bonnie Doon and contenders Whorouly.

Spencer said playing the top end of town early had its advantages.

“In our first game against

Tarrawingee, we knew it was going to be very hard the way their team moves is something that we want to aspire to,” she said.

“Having to play them in the first round helped us on things to work on from the get-go.

“Rather than waiting to play the top teams later in the year and only playing them once, we’re lucky enough to get to play them twice.”

The Panthers have a golden opportunity to take the four points when they host

Moyhu on Saturday.

The Hoppers have only one more win on the board than Benalla, with the fixture making for a scintillating contest.

“Moyhu are a great team, they’re sort of underdogs every year, everybody doesn’t expect them then they come out and hit really hard,” Spencer said.

“It’ll definitely be hard fought down in the defensive end.

“We’ve got Jessie Ellis, she missed last week so she’ll be back this week - hopefully

having her down there, with her athleticism, can really stop that and bring the ball down the midcourt.

“Hopefully ‘Larsy’ [Alara Jones] and I get our shots in and we can manage to get a second win on the board.”

Elsewhere, reigning premiers Bonnie Doon will be up against the undefeated Tarrawingee in what is sure to be a must-watch clash.

Whorouly is home to mercurial Greta, The Bats host the Demons, and the Hawks head up the mountain to take on Bright.

“We’ve played him in a couple of different positions, his ball use across half back has been a standout I think.

“Our back six have been very solid throughout the year, that’s one line where we haven’t really had too many injuries as such, it’s been a positive.

“We got scored against against Bright, obviously that was a bit of a funny game with

injuries, but in all the other games we haven’t been heavily scored against.”

Up against the premiership Blues, Newton said it would come down to persistence, negating Greta’s key players, and most importantly belief.

“For us, it’s just about putting a full team performance in, and we’ve got to make sure we bring a four-quarter effort,” he said.

“They’ve obviously got multiple goalscoring options there, [James] McClounan can kick goals through the middle, Frazer Judd and Cody Crawford,

guys like that who are very dangerous threats going forward, so we’ve got to make sure we’re on defensively.

“We’re trying to create that self-belief within the group, which has been non-existent over the last couple of years because it’s been such a battle.

“The conversation in the past has been ‘how do we stop them beating us by over 100’, whereas now we’ve got to have the belief in the group that we’re going there to win and win well.”

The Lions host Greta at Whorouly Recreation Reserve, with the

seconds football from 12pm and seniors from 2pm.

In other matches, Goorambat are at home to Milawa in what’s sure to be a great contest.

The Bats and Demons have not faced each other since late August, when Goorambat sent Milawa packing from the finals series by more than 10 goals.
