council will be able to increase the plant from its current 5200 tonnes

capacity to 25,000 tonnes.

This would give the facility the scope to take in all the organic waste within the region and beyond.

The plant at Bowser is coming into its third year of operation and work is underway to ramp it up to

12,000 tonnes by mid-2022.

Mayor Dean Rees said a full and comprehensive business case to expand the facility further has been developed.

He said this would see capacity increased to 25,000 tonnes per annum and has

the potential to become a truly regional facility.

“Council backs Independent member for Indi Helen Haines’ proposal for a Commonwealth contribution of $8 million in the March federal budget,” Cr Rees said.

“This funding will allow Wangaratta to become a hub for processing organic waste in North East Victoria.

“Subject to funding, the availability of materials and Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approval, this expansion could be completed within two years.”

Volunteers sought by local group NEW volunteers are being sought by the Cancer Council Victoria Wangaratta Volunteer Group.

Now in its 41st year, the local group is looking for more people to help run events this year.

A meeting to discuss this will be held at 21 Billabong Drive, Wangaratta on Monday, February 21 at 7.15pm and anyone interested in being involved is invited to come along.

It will be a COVIDSafe meeting, with those attending needing to be fully vaccinated and wear a mask.

Fists and snowboard used in alpine assault A SEASONAL worker who assaulted two fellow employees at Falls Creek with a snowboard in an alcohol-induced fury last year has been fined $1500 and ordered to undergo anger management and alcohol abuse treatment.

The 27-year-old South Australian man faced Wangaratta Magistrates Court last week and pleaded guilty to one count of theft and two counts of intentionally cause injury after he found a woman with whom he had become infatuated in bed with another man.

Crown prosecutor Angela Liantzakis said the accused and a female victim had commenced a one-month relationship after beginning lift work together in early June, before the victim attempted to gently distance her-

self from the accused.

On the night of July 12, the female and a co-worker left a Falls Creek nightspot, before a mutual friend suggested the accused check on the female at her accommodation.

Ms Liantzakis said the accused had located the pair in bed, punching them repeatedly with a clenched fist before picking up a snowboard and continuing to land blows.

He then stole two snowboards from the room, before returning to the hotel, where his friends noticed his knuckles were bloodied.

Upon his arrest the following morning, the accused told police he had “acted in a way I wouldn’t usually”.

Defence lawyer Geoff Clancy said the altercation had been

“an instant reputation destroyer” for his client, who had immediately left the mountain and ultimately moved back to his home state of South Australia.

He said his client did not have any prior criminal history and said COVID impacts on the alpine community had meant workers had increased their alcohol intake as a result of increased down-time on the mountain.

Magistrate Ian Watkins said it was rare for someone accused of being “vicious towards a woman” came before the court with no prior history.

“Men are a little slower at picking up a relationship breakdown than women - that’s a fact of life,” he said.

“You didn’t cope with that particularly well - you should

have turned on your heels and got out of there.

“You have now been essentially ostracised from the Victorian alpine community.”

Mr Watkins said the accused would have been assessed for a community corrections order had he still been living in Victoria, however, there were significant challenges with transferring such an order interstate.

He summated a 12-month adjourned undertaking with conviction would address his concerns, and ordered the accused to undergo treatment for anger and alcohol abuse.

He was also ordered to contribute $1500 to the court fund, and pay $500 in restitution after one of the stolen snowboards that was not recovered.

Haines calls for $8 million to increase city’s green waste facility ■

From page 1 In Victoria, organic waste accounts for around 35 per cent of all household waste and it is estimated that around 57 per cent of that waste ends up in landfill when it could be recovered.

Removing organics from landfill saves 400kg of carbon dioxide per tonne of organic waste.

Dr Haines compiled a $350 million wish list for Treasurer Josh Frydenberg last week detailing the benefits of each project for Indi.

The environmental and financial rewards of the organics plant upscaling are significant.

With the plant running at 25,000 tonnes per annum, it would reduce C02 emissions by 10,000 tonnes per year or the equivalent of driving a medium sized car from Wangaratta to Melbourne 120,000 times (30 million kilometres).

Based on an additional 20,000 tonnes, an analysis of the cost of transport and processing at facilities further afield, versus bringing it to Wangaratta,

would result in annual savings of up to 33 per cent per year to other councils.

It is estimated 10 full time jobs would be created during construction with direct valueadd and indirect consumption adding a further $3 million to the local economy.

With the increased processing capacity of the facility, it is expected that a further five fulltime jobs will be created with a supply chain and value-add impact of $3.3 million to the local economy.

Hollywood comes to Winton Wetlands

WINTON Wetlands will be used as a location for an international feature film.

Amazon Studios’ epic production, Foe, recently began filming in the state, with locations to also include Docklands Studios Melbourne.

The star-studded cast includes Saoirse Ronan (Little Women, Brooklyn), Paul Mescal (Normal People) and Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad).

The production was attracted to the state through the Victorian Screen Incentive and the Regional Location Assistance Fund, and is expected to inject up to $32 million into the Victorian economy and create 950 jobs for Victorian cast and crew - including four leading head of department roles.

The sci-fi psychological thriller will be directed by Victorian filmmaker Garth Davis, best known for his Academy Award nominated film Lion.

Foe is based on the novel of the same name written by Ian

Reid, who is a co-writer of the adaptation alongside Mr Davis.

The production will engage over 500 local businesses from across Melbourne and regional Victoria, including construction companies and caterers.

Through Film Victoria’s skills development program, the State Government is supporting placements for three local practitioners to hone their specialist skills while working on the production - director Michael Hudson, costume buyer Ellen Stainstreet and set decorator Tom Herbert.

Winton Wetlands offers appeal to producers for the ‘gothic’ quality evident across parts of the reserve affected by the original creation of the artificial Lake Mokoan in the 1960s and later decommissioned, between 2004-2010.

When first created, around 200,000 trees died - many of them fully grown River Red Gums.

With the draining of the lake and a return to natural wetland conditions, these ghostly relics (known as

stags) include many Aboriginal scar trees that still stand today, having re-emerged from the lake as dead stags but with their scarring and their stories still evident.

The Winton Wetlands committee of management sees media production on-site as a way to help make more people aware of the reserve and boost revenue.

Production activities occur onsite only under strict environmental conditions, traffic management, safety, due respect to the customs and practices of local Yorta Yorta people, and other aspects.

“Subject to the activities happening in a carefully controlled and sensitive manner, we’re excited to see Winton Wetlands used a production site,” Winton Wetlands CEO Sue Lebish said.

“This links into one of the important objectives of the wetlands project which is to educate and inform.

“Our hope is that as people become curious about the location of a movie or program they have enjoyed, some will want to learn more

about Winton Wetlands - and discover its importance as an ecological restoration project and a site of cultural and historical significance.

“Anything that opens the door to people wanting to learn more can only be a good thing.

“As well as the educational and environmental dimensions, Winton Wetlands is obliged to pay its own way to the greatest extent possible too.

“When carefully managed, movies and other media productions on-site can earn much-needed revenue to help us pay for the ongoing operations of the reserve, including research and breeding programs.

“There are also important benefits to the local economy, with production crews needing accommodation, local jobs being created and regional businesses enjoying spin-off benefits.”

Recent productions made in part at Winton Wetlands include a feature film, The True History of the Kelly Gang, and an ABC television series, Books That Made Us, which aired in 2021.

Paul Kelly coming to Wangaratta in March AUSTRALIAN music legend Paul Kelly has added a Wangaratta show to his sold out On The Road Again Tour which starts next month.

Kelly announced yesterday he will play at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre on Thursday, March 10 - one of just three new shows added to the east coast tour.

Frontier Touring members will have access to presale tickets from 10am tomorrow, before tickets to the general public go on sale at 10am on Monday, February 14.

Kelly will be supported by his full band including Vika and Linda Bull, with special guest Gordi to open the Victorian shows.

THE upcoming Science Forum to be held at Winton Wetlands on March 1-2 will bring together leading experts in wetlands ecology and management, and feature three distinct sessions each packed with quality content.

The first of the three sessions - Rewilding of Iconic Species - asks the key question of what is “enough”?

It asks: “Is it enough to restore vegetation and animal communities from what exists onsite or is reintroduction rewilding - of key or iconic species necessary to ensure ecosystem functions occur, if those species are unlikely to be able to naturally recolonise?”

Five expert speakers will share their knowledge of these issues:  Peter Rose, NCCMA, on the “Small bodied native fish recovery through the Mid-Murray Floodplain Recovery Reach Program”;  Dr Nick Whiterod, NGT/Aquasave, on “There must be something in the water: the role of conservation translocations to recover neglected freshwater species”;

 Dr Laurence Berry, AWC, on “Mammal Re-introductions into fenced sanctuaries”;  Dr Ricky Spencer, UWS on “1 Million Turtles Project and turtle rewilding”;  Dr Lisa Farnsworth, Winton Wetlands, on “Rewilding of Iconic Species at Winton Wetlands” - an account of the fascinating work now getting under way at Winton Wetlands and its implications.

Mr Bowen’s visit will include a tour of the Wilson Transformer Company in Wodonga.

“Wilson is a big employer in Indi and a major player in the manufacture of key electrical infrastructure used in

renewable energy production,” Ms David said.

“Chris is keen to see how Australian manufacturing is already supporting renewable energy in the regions, and hear how we can grow our manufacturing industry from local workers and business owners.”

Making more of our Winton Wetlands NEWS that Winton Wetlands will again be used as a setting for an international feature film is not only good for the wetlands, it‘s good for the surrounding communities.

Apart from the economic benefit of having a large production company spending their dollars in the region, it can also provide worldwide coverage of the wetlands when the film is released through Amazon streaming service.

Winton Wetlands is certainly a rare if not unique landscape as we have covered many times in the Wangaratta Chronicle, but it is only in its infancy in being well known as a tourist destination state and nationwide.

By allowing film companies to use its magical settings, within strict guidelines to ensure the invaluable environment is not impacted negatively, it in effect becomes a promotional newsreel for television screens here and overseas.

Destinations including our capital cities spruik about attracting film companies for this very reason but they don‘t always find their way out into regional areas.

By becoming recognised as an extraordinary backdrop in such films, Winton Wetlands can become a specialist in the industry and hopefully develop a new revenue stream to help maintain and continually improve the wetland experience for visitors and better our understanding of its environment and the flora and fauna that lives there.

Winton Wetlands was an expensive and controversial project from the start and although there remains some who would still prefer it to revert to its former water storage operation, that is highly unlikely as we become more aware of its importance to our environment.

The more people who can utiliise the wetlands, and pay for the privilege, the more people will begin to appreciate its value.

Only option for MPs who value integrity TODAY the Attorney General admitted what we have known to be true for a long time: integrity is not a priority for the Liberal National Government.

For three years they have delayed, distracted and dragged their feet after promising to implement a federal integrity commission, and now that promise is broken.

What the government does prioritise is the ability to spend taxpayer money for political purposes, without proper scrutiny.

That is what we will see again in the upcoming budget and election campaign.

We knew a government that sees no difference between taxpayer money and Liberal National party money wouldn’t value integrity, but now they have proven it.

The only bill for a robust federal integrity commission with teeth to be developed in consultation with legal experts in this term of parliament is my Australian Federal Integrity Commission Bill.

As an independent I have tried to work with the government to progress a federal integrity commission with teeth, but today’s admission of failure by the attorney general shows the only way Australia will get a federal integrity commission is with my bill, coming from the crossbench.

I know the majority of MPs who do value integrity are ready to vote on my bill.

Voting with integrity means voting for integrity.

Liberal and National MPs who value integrity will get no chance in this parliament to vote in favour of an integrity commission bill drafted by their government.

There will be consequences at the ballot box for MPs who talk a big game on integrity but take no action in parliament.

Why does government ignore aged care crisis?

AGED care nurses and personal care workers are protesting today at Parliament House in Canberra and Federal Government buildings around the country to highlight the extreme private aged care staffing crisis and the consequences of neglect on them and their residents.

The protest numbers are low because there just are not enough nurses and carers.

They should not have to protest.

There was a crisis in private aged care before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sector is in dire straits now.

Duck calls a season political issue IT’S that time of year when Nationals MPs pop up to demand duck shooting - regardless of waterbird numbers or the impact on regional residents who endure annual assaults on their eardrums (“MP wants return of a full duck season”, Feb 7).

I wish these MPs would preface their remarks by stating whether they - or close family

members - have been involved in duck shooting themselves.

Journalists must declare potential conflicts of interest when they write a story. - why is there a lower standard for MPs? Take Nationals leader Peter Walsh for example.

His record in the Parliamentary Register of Interests was updated in February 2020 to acknowledge his membership of hunt lobby group Field & Game Australia. Co-incidentally that’s the same month his colleague Bridget McKenzie was demoted for not disclosing membership of Wangaratta Clay Target Club in the so-called “sport-rorts” affair.

Walsh has always backed hunters and was the minister responsible for hunting in the Baillieu-Napthine government 2010-2014.

Why was he so slow to acknowledge his personal links?

I have family connections to Wangaratta and enjoy visiting the region.

It devalues our wildlife when native ducks are “sold” to shooters for the bargain basement price of $60 (full-price licence) or $30 (for deer hunters) or $15 (for a concessional deer hunter).

Our waterbirds are a shared asset and would bring more economic benefits if promoted for wildlife tourism, instead of gun fodder for the 0.1 per cent of Victorians who kill or cripple them.

Inquiry into police pursuit death IN early September 2017 Jacqueline Vodden was a passenger in a stolen car that crashed into a power pole in Ballarat.

Ten days later the 16-yearold was killed when another stolen vehicle she was in hit a parked truck on the Western Freeway during a police pursuit.

She had become friends with the 17-year-old male driver just weeks before her death.

He had a significant criminal history, was linked to

a string of burglaries and thefts across Ballarat, and was on bail and subject to a police operation at the time.

Officers were out on patrol looking for him when they heard reports of a stolen van casing homes. In their search for the teen and the van, they found both and pursued.

Coroner Sarah Gebert is now investigating the pursuit and the circumstances leading to Ms Vodden’s death.

After spotting the van

just outside Ballan, officers turned on their lights and sirens, and tried to pull the car over.

There were four officers in the car, driven by a senior constable who has been excused from giving evidence to the inquest on health grounds.

The van did not stop and by the time they reached Ballan, they were officially in pursuit, reaching 100km/h in the township and once the van hit the freeway it got to 130km/h.

The driver tried to overtake a B-double truck in a service lane.

“I instantly felt that the pursuit should be terminated,” the officer behind the wheel wrote in a statement.

It was the first time the driver had given officers a reason to believe he was a danger to the public, but before they could ease off the van collided with a parked VicRoads truck in the service lane.

Ms Vodden was thrown from the van and suffered

fatal head, chest, pelvic and leg injuries.

The teen driver suffered minor injuries and ran off before stealing another car to get away.

He was later arrested and found to have had methamphetamine and other drugs in his system at the time of the crash.

He pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing Ms Vodden’s death and was jailed for eight years in 2018.

That sentence was reduced to six years, with a

The inquest is investigating decisions made in the lead-up to and during the police pursuit, including the risk assessment conducted by officers throughout, why some details about the van’s movements and speeds were not passed on to the pursuit controller, and whether the pursuit controller had adequate information to assess and understand the risks.

Emissions targets to be costly for grain growers A CSIRO report has found reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in the $13 billion Australian grains sector is likely to see a decrease in grain production.

The report released on Tuesday was produced by the national science agency for the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and looked at how the grains sector could help meet Australia’s climate targets.

The Australian Grains Baseline and Mitigation Assessment also

found emissions could be reduced by approximately 15 per cent by 2030 through a change in farming practices including regional crop rotations and a change in fertiliser use.

The report was co-authored by CSIRO Senior Research Scientist, Dr Maartje Sevenster who said it was important for the grains industry to understand the options.

“The Australian grains sector can contribute to managing global climate change by increasing

yields and reducing greenhouse gas intensity, but reducing on farm emissions is very hard to achieve,” she told AAP. “You can increase production without increasing emissions significantly...if it was about total emissions reduction you would very likely lose production from the system.”

“I don’t necessarily think that all sectors should contribute equally because it is more difficult for some sectors than others,” she said.

Morrison is sorry for assault, harassment SCOTT Morrison has apologised to former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins as well as others exploited, abused and harassed in federal parliament.

The prime minister said sorry as part of a landmark apology and acknowledgement delivered on the floor of parliament on Tuesday.

“I am sorry. We are sorry.

I am sorry to Ms Higgins for the terrible things that took place here,” Mr Morrison said.

“The place that should have been a place for safety and contribution turned out to be a nightmare.

“Over many decades, the culture that perpetuated web bullying, abuse, harassment and in some cases even violence became normalised.

“This has to change. It is changing, and I believe it will change.”

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese thanked Ms Higgins for her courage in speaking out.

Her allegation a year ago about her alleged 2019 rape in a minister’s office sparked multiple reviews of federal parliament’s culture.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to everyone in this building as well as every former staff

member who stepped up to share their experiences of workplace bullying and misconduct,” the Labor leader said.

The leaders’ apologies followed a statement by House of Representatives Speaker Andrew Wallace acknowledging harassment, assault and bullying across Commonwealth parliamentary workplaces.

It was one of 28 recommendations in a review by Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins.

About one third of staff surveyed had been sexually harassed on the job.

Dr Sevenster said the 18-month research initiative provided essential baseline data around the current level of greenhouse emissions for the Australian grains industry.

Australian agriculture has recently defined ambitious objectives which aim to reduce Australia’s emissions reductions while keeping the sector competitive on the global market.

GRDC Chair and Queensland grain grower, John Woods said the report established an important

baseline for the sector.

“The risks of climate change and climate variability including low rainfall and increased temperatures to the Australian grains sector are significant,” Mr Woods said.

“Yet climate challenge creates new opportunities for innovation and growth for the agricultural sector, and with the right approach, Australia’s grain sector can prosper in a changing environment.”

Border closures have big impact on hiring CLOSES international borders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and a sharp drop in skilled migration has meant 380,000 fewer people have entered the workforce at a cost of $32 billion to the Australian economy.

These findings in a new study by RMIT Online and Deloitte Access Economics also calculate that Australian economic growth could have grown by an additional $148 billion without the pandemic impacts.

“The closure of international borders brought Australia’s migration to a

virtual standstill and has exacerbated the talent shortage in Australia,” the study released on Tuesday shows.

It also warns the impacts of closing Australia’s international borders aren’t a temporary setback and without action, the economy will be permanently smaller than it otherwise would have been in absence of COVID-19.

“This means that reverting to pre-pandemic trends isn’t enough. Instead, even stronger growth is needed to correct for losses incurred during the pandem-

ic,” the study results read.

Border closures were cited by a quarter of employers as one of the key barriers to attracting new staff.

A survey of 413 business leaders and 1040 employees from mid-size and big companies across several Australian industries found more than half of Australian workers have taken steps to change their current employment.

“It’s no secret that employers across Australia are struggling to find great people with the right skills,” RMIT Online’s CEO Helen Souness said.

Victim reform requested WANGARATTA-based state MP Tania Maxwell yesterday continued her fight to obtain new rights for victims of crime throughout the state.

Ms Maxwell joined fellow Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party (DHJP) MP Stuart Grimley in proposing three amendments to the Justice Legislation Amendment (Criminal Procedure Disclosure and Other Matters) Bill 2021, which would see sweeping changes imposed upon the Victims’ Charter Act 2006.

Amendments presented to parliament included a requirement for the Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) to notify victims of their right to make a victim impact statement, as well as compel investigatory agencies to inform victims of their right to seek compensation or restitution from a convicted offender.

The third amendment would allow victims to seek a review of decisions by the OPP to accept a pleabargain, and require victims to be informed of this right.

“DHJP has seen time and again where victims are not advised of their right to make a victim impact statement ahead of sentencing,” he said.

“This is usually the only opportunity for them to participate formally in the criminal justice process, and it can be traumatic if they’re denied it.

“We also know that few victims are actually notified of their right to claim compensation for physical and mental injury, theft, property loss, and damage and destruction.

“The current law requires them to make a claim for compensation for mental or physical injuries within 12 months of a guilty verdict, so they need to act quickly.

“You can’t act on something you don’t know about.”

Car reversed into Appin Street business A WOMAN was taken to hospital on Monday morning, after she reversed over a kerb and into a building along the Appin Street shopping strip.

Firefighters and ambulance crews were on scene shortly after 8.30am, after multiple callers contacted Triple Zero (000) to report a woman had been involved in a single vehicle crash into a building.

No bystanders were injured in the crash, which saw a white Mazda hatchback narrowly avoid a pair of waste bins.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said the scene was declared safe by responding firefighters within five minutes of arriving on scene.

The driver was transferred to Northeast Health Wangaratta for observation by paramedics.

Police intercepted blades in smuggling attempt A WANGARATTA man who attempted to smuggle stanley knife blades into police custody has been convicted and fined $2000 after the weapons were intercepted by police.

Appearing via WebeX at Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Monday, the 21-year-old pleaded guilty to possess cannabis, fail to answer bail and exchange article related charges, after clothes he had delivered to Wangaratta Police Station for a family member were found to contain several small blades.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Stuart Pritchard told the court the man had attended the station on August 10, 2020, to deliver clothes to a family member who was in custody.

The waistband of a pair of sweatpants supplied was found to contain a piece of paper with messages of support, with stanley knife blades enclosed with sticky tape.

LSC Pritchard said the accused had provided a no comment interview to police the following day, and had not implicated anyone else in the operation.

Defence lawyer Nancy Battiato said her client had been heavily impacted by drugs at the time and had endeavoured to provide the blades for protection, after losing a cousin in custody only six months previous.

“He acted obviously very foolishly in supplying those blades,” she said.

He was previously intercepted by police in July 2019, after he was spotted riding a bicycle without a helmet near Greta Road.

A search of his person located approximately four grams of cannabis, an amount Ms Battiato said was purely for personal use.

Magistrate Peter Dunn refuted Ms Battiato’s request for a community corrections order sentence, instead ordering the accused to pay a $2000 fine with conviction.

It certainly didn’t take the older students long to settle back into school life.

For the new students, both the foundation students and new families to the school, there were some nerves, mixed with the excitement of a new beginning.

The foundation students entered their classroom with parents and siblings

at their side, to see a room full of variety and engaging activities that quickly absorbed their attention.

After a speedy goodbye to their families, they were into playing, sharing and meeting new friends.

A couple of days into the school routine, the foundation students were exposed to the first of many PE and Italian sessions.

They are also looking forward to working in the art room, exploring their creative skills.

1927 returns live and loud for 2022 A BAND whose debut album topped the charts for months in the eighties and whose songs still receive regular airplay today will play live at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre on February 25.

It was a golden era for Australian rock bands, but only a handful of bands stood the test of time to still be counted as icons to this day.

1927’s debut album went five times platinum and stayed in the ARIA chart for 46 weeks, and is still one of the top 10 most successful debut albums for an Australian artist.

They received multiple ARIA awards, a multi-platinum second album and chart success in Europe and America, but are also known for

Power Saving Bonus up for grabs THE Victorian Government is extending the popular $250 Power Saving Bonus payment to support more vulnerable households doing it tough with energy bills.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said that the extension would provide crucial financial support for eligible households who have yet to receive the payment. More than 350,000

Victorians have already accessed the one-off $250 payment since it was launched in February 2021, providing more than $87.5 million to those who need it most.

Households receiving payments through the Pensioner Concession, JobSeeker, Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance programs, or who hold a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card are eligible.

The payment is transferred electronically into bank accounts or provided via cheque on request, and typically takes about two weeks to arrive.

To assist eligible households who may not have access to a computer or require assistance with their application, the government is providing support through the Power Saving Bonus Community Outreach Program.

The $250 Power Saving Bonus is part of a $797 million household energy affordability package announced in November 2020.

It is delivered through the Victorian Energy Compare website, which receives more than one million visitors each year.

Victorian Energy Compare is a truly independent price comparison tool that helps consumers find the

best energy deal available.

Data shows that seven out of every ten users can save money by switching energy offers with a typical annual saving of $330.

cost of living pressures and she encourages all eligible households to apply for what could be a crucial $250 payment towards their energy bills.

Class begins for city’s newest kinder

TWENTY-TWO preschoolers brought the new Wangaratta Children’s Services Centre kindergarten to life yesterday.

The first session held at the new Bachelors Green facility capped years of planning and construction aimed at providing another gateway to learning for local youngsters.

The kinder has the capacity to cater for 33 children, and Rural City of Wangaratta director of community wellbeing Ruth Tai said it was pleasing

to have attracted 22 enrolments for the first year.

Ms Tai said planning undertaken in relation to future needs had identified that about 50 children in the municipality were not taking up kindergarten places.

There has also been strong demand for positions at other local kindergartens, including those overseen by the North East Regional Pre School Association.

It is hoped the new centre will increase the take-up of pre-school education, and ease the squeeze on other facilities within the rural city.

IT had been a long time between drinks, but the local community emerged out of isolation to get together once again for the Whitfield and District Golf Club’s annual membership drive on Sunday.

The club welcomed 251 members for the 2022 season, many who celebrated in style with a chicken and salad luncheon and a delicious array of desserts, plus plenty to quench the thirst.

Club president Greg Rosser said he was delighted by the attendance and a great day was had by all, as he thanked everyone for their support.

“Fellow local groups such as the

King Valley Football Netball Club, the Whitfield Recreation committee, the Good Neighborhood Program and very generous sponsors such a Red Feet, Dalzotto and Pizzini Wines, and the Mountain View Hotel got right behind the drive,” he said.

“Thanks also to the members of the Jubilee Golf Club who now enjoy dual-membership as their way of showing support to their Whitfield colleagues after enjoying a recent visit to our boutique course.”

Mr Rosser said while it was disappointing quite a few club stalwarts were unable to attend due to genuine COVID-related reasons, and the club’s desire to adhere to all the pan-

Aussies name Test squad for Pakistan

AUSTRALIA has named an 18-man squad for their first Test tour of Pakistan in 24 years.

Pat Cummins’ team will attempt to put the Justin Langer saga behind them when the three-Test series starts in Rawalpindi on March 4.

They are preparing for every scenario given no current player was even close to professional cricket the last time Australia played a Test in Pakistan in 1998.

The XI that appeared in the

final Ashes Test in Hobart, including Pakistan-born Usman Khawaja, have all been named.

Opener Marcus Harris, who was axed for Khawaja to end the series, has been given a reprieve.

Star quick Josh Hazlewood, who missed the final four Ashes Tests against England after suffering a niggling side injury, is among the selected bowlers.

Australian Olympic luger looks to generation next ALEX Ferlazzo is hopeful Australia’s Olympic best performance in luge will inspire the next generation to try riding a four-wheeled home-made sled down a hill.

The 26-year-old finished 16th in the luge at the Beijing Olympics, improving 12 places from his performance four years ago in PyeongChang.

Now a triple Olympian, Ferlaz-

zo took up the sport as a teenager in tropical Townsville and had to improvise by making his own sled before he got to some ice.

He hoped that his Beijing showing could inspire some other crazy young kids to pursue the luge, where athletes laying feet first hit 130km per hour down an icy track.

“I can’t wait to see some Aussie young ‘uns come through and give

it a crack, hopefully some kids watching tonight will be out there giving it a go soon,” Ferlazzo said.

“That really excites me, I feel like with the knowledge I have now I can help the next generation and that’s the goal.”

The event was won by German veteran Johannes Ludwig, with Austria’s Wolfgang Kindl and Italian Dominik Fischnaller rounding out the podium.

Gillespie: I don’t want to coach Australia JASON Gillespie says he doesn’t want to coach Australia’s cricket team while describing Justin Langer’s messy exit from the job as “heartbreaking”.

Gillespie, who is South Australia’s coach and a former coach of English county sides Sussex and Yorkshire, had been touted as potential replacement for Langer.

“I am not putting myself up for any job,” Gillespie told reporters on Tuesday.

“It’s nice to be thought of in that way but it’s certainly something I am not even thinking about entertaining.”

Gillespie has reached out to former Test teammate Langer, who quit on Saturday as Australia’s coach.

“Everyone has been pretty disappointed with how it has all played out - pretty heartbreaking to see, to be honest.,” Gillespie said.

“But unfortunately, it is what it is.

“Justin has handled himself very well ... the decision has been made and whatever decision they make, they make.

“But I think everyone is of the opinion that things probably could have been handled better.

“He is OK.

“He felt he had something to offer Australian cricket.

Cricket Australia felt differently.

“So move on, that’s part and parcel I suppose of being in professional sport and being a coach.”

Gillespie praised Langer’s four-year tenure as national coach.

“Justin will go on and do wonderful things that we all know he can,” he said.

“He has done a fine job with Australian cricket the last four years and we all wish him really well because he will succeed in whatever he puts his mind to.”

Disappointed at minor errors in his first two competition runs on Saturday, Ferlazzo showed his class with his fourth and final run time rivalling the top 10 finishers.

“I am ecstatic, it’s been a hell of a season. To put that final run down at the Olympics, I’m on top of the world,” said Ferlazzo, who trains with the United States team.

“I knew it was going to be a

great run as soon as I pulled off the handles, I just felt it.

“As soon as I lay down I was so calm, coming out of the spiral I had a moment, this is the flow state you find on a special run.

“That first day really spoke volumes on what nerves can do to an athlete, and today I’ve come in with a different mindset. That last run was my best all week, I’m stoked.”

Less is more for Wallabies coach Rennie RUGBY fans can expect a more settled Wallabies line-up in 2022 as coach Dave Rennie ramps up preparations for next year’s World Cup in France.

Rennie has introduced 20 newcomers to the Test arena since succeeding Michael Cheika in 2020 in a concerted effort to build a squad with sufficient experience to challenge for the Webb Ellis Cup again.

It will be a quarter of a century since Australia last raised the trophy for a second time - by the time the 10th edition of

the global showpiece rolls around in 2023.

Final defeats in 2003 and 2015 have been as close as the Wallabies have got to matching their 1991 and 1999 World Cup triumphs and Rennie knows striking the right balance between youth and know-how is key.

Hence why he won’t blooding another raft of fresh talent during the Wallabies’ 14 or 15 Tests this season, depending on the final program for the northern hemisphere spring tour in November.

“I’d expect us to have a

more settled look around the squad because we’ve got a lot of knowledge and we’ve got a lot of confidence in the guys we’re using,” Rennie said on Tuesday.

“But they’ve got to perform and, if they do that, hopefully they can build on what they’ve done so far.

“But we’re certainly not going to close the door on anyone jumping out of the pack.

“The door’s always open. If someone emerges from left field, they’ll be rewarded.”

Rory can’t stay ‘out’ of it THIS summer has seen many young, up-and-coming cricketers play their best on the field in their whites, but only one in the light-blue garb of a WDCA umpire.

For 14-year old Rory Harvey, the chance to stand in the centre once again was a dream.

“I did footy umpiring last year and I hurt my shoulder playing cricket last season for Rovers United Bruck and I wanted to get back into cricket but I didn’t know how because I couldn’t play,” he said.

“I was in under 14s and played a couple senior games - that’s where I did my shoulder.

“I heard that they (the WDCA) needed umpires and I thought it would be a great way to get back into it.”

Harvey said his knowledge and experience in the game helped him transition from player to umpire quite easily.

“It was pretty easy, especially if you’re into cricket and know the rules,” he said.

“You let them know you want to start and then you have just got to do a couple courses just to know the rules fully.

“There are a few things like local rules that you’ll need to know.

“Once you’ve done that you kind of just learn alongside them (other umpires) - it’s more line in-person learning than anything else.”

Harvey’s first umpiring job was a B grade match between Milawa and City Colts, and he spent the first 12 overs at the non-striker’s end with veteran WDCA umpire Jim Davidson guiding him through the process.

After finding his legs, Harvey held down an end by himself, alternating main umpire duties with Davidson for the

remainder of the match.

The call-up for his umpiring debut game only a day before.

“I was excited, I got all my stuff together because I just wanted to get back out there, get to the cricket again,” Harvey said.

“I was a bit nervous, but I wasn’t as nervous as I expected to be, because it was the same environment that I’d been around.

“Everyone was friendly enough, really welcoming.

“It was just good to know there wasn’t that much pressure on me.

“Hopefully I can work my way up to A grade and just keep going.

“I did like it, so I’d like to get some A grade cricket umpiring.

“I don’t really know what happens after this - all I know so far is I’ll just keep trying to do my best and keep trying to get the better games.”

Club Championships The Men’s and Women’s Club Singles Championship Finals were held last Thursday evening.

The conditions couldn’t have been much worse for the players with a strong southerly wind blowing straight down the green.

Jodie Fruend was always in control against Heather Coyle in the women’s final.

Fruend handled the blustery conditions with aplomb as she ran out an easy (25-8) winner.

Coyle had some great wins against Renee Hill, Rhoanna Smith and Barb McDonald to reach the final.

Jodie will represent Wangaratta in the O&M Champion of Champions event later this month.

Ethan Fruend won the first of what could be many men’s titles defeating Maurie Braden in the men’s final.

Fruend opened up a big lead before Braden staged a comeback, but Fruend had a big enough lead and won (25-17).

It was back-to-back runner-up finishes for Braden, while at just 20 years of age Fruend can look forward to many more attempts at the title.

Ethan will join Jodie in the O&M Champ of Champs later in the month.

Corowa Blue push ahead

Section 1 THE home town derby between Corowa Red and Corowa Blue was a dress rehearsal for the likely combatants for this year’s flag.

Both teams were missing key players but the standard was high and the evenness between the two teams is apparent as there were only a few games separating the teams in the finish.

The result was always up for grabs as both teams gained the ascendancy at different times of the match, early it was Blue then Red fought back to even up the contest.

Blue managed to win the tight sets early which gave them a healthy lead heading into the final stanza but Red won two of the final three sets to finish five games in arrears and were unlucky not to snatch victory at the death.

Helen Fuge (three sets) was Blue’s best and was ably assisted by Darrell Spencer and Jono Keys.

Red were lead by Marianne Spencer, Peter Filliponi and Anne Rhodes.

Lawn White enhanced their stranglehold on third position on the ladder with a convincing win over Wang Hardcourt.

Lawn took command early and never looked likely to relinquish the lead they had established, as they stretched their lead at every change to eventually run out 6-3 and 12 games winners.

Hardcourt stretched Lawn early when they went within a whisker of winning the first women’s set, something Lawn Blue aren’t use to, and if Hardcourt could have managed to sneak over the line it may have throw the Lawn team into a downward spiral.

North Wangaratta court upgrades works continue NORTH Wangaratta Football Netball Club is receiving two new netball courts as part of Rural City of Wangaratta’s North Wangaratta Recreation Reserve Upgrade.

Other works in stage two of the upgrade include the construction of a netball shelter and fencing, a power upgrade to the site, and new court lighting.

“In 2020 council was successful in obtained funding through the Federal Government’s Sport Australia funding program to upgrade the North Wangaratta Netball Court and deliver a lighting upgrade to the North Wangaratta Football Oval,” Rural City of Wangaratta director infrastructure services Marcus Goonan said.

“Stage two of the North Wangaratta Recreation Re-

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence opened applications for the 2021-22 Change Our Game, Community Activation Grants Program, which aims to drive and grow female participation in sporting clubs.

The program offers grants of up to $10,000 to eligible organisations providing more opportunities for women and girls at the grassroots level, to further gender equality in community sport.

The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation supports initiatives that bring together communities to celebrate gender equality in women’s sport, promote participation options for women and girls, and provide opportunities for clubs to gain relevant skills and knowledge of gender equality practices.

THE tennis weather gods were looking down on WLTC with nothing but positives as the sun was shining to a top of 29 degrees with a south easterly wind blowing at about five kilometres.

Section 1 Section one was sent out to court six and what a match it was with both John Brunner and Matt Allen going toe to toe with neither player budging to give the other any advantage.

John played the rallies from the back of the court with a dipping topspin forehand just clearing the net and then Matt took control of the net with some class volleys.

The two players ended the day with the scores being level at 23/19.

The two remaining players in Phil Peck and Sam Allen were at times a side-show alley, as they tried their best but were no match to the skill of those two.

Phil ended the day with 20/22 from Sam on 18/24.

Section 2 Frazer Judd had his big serve firing like a bullet out of a gun as he took each of his opponents apart at will to win section two.

Frazer won with a glass in hand

as his score of 24/14 confirms.

Nearest to Frazer was Frank Harris and Mark Brown, both of who finished on 19 games but Frank taking second position on games against.

Kevin Callahan was next in line with his flat forehand clearing the net with the barest of margins to finish with 17 games from Brian Scobie on 15 games.

Section 3 There are some in the club questioning the training regime/ medical supplement of one Brett Goodwin who won section three for the second week in a row with 22 games.

How can someone who doesn’t pick up a racquet during the week due to body fatigue from a long week at work, then come out and take apart some of the highest quality tennis players the club has seen?

Is it, pickle juice, is it magnesium tablets or is he just a finely tuned athlete?

Coming in equal second place was the master of slap in Matt Curran and the master of everything else (especially the lob) in Barry Sullivan, both ending the day with 21/19.

The good doc in Mike Falkenberg rounded out the section with 16 games.

Section 4 Ian McDonald was back down on the lawn after some weeks of R&R beside the pool.

The layoff was purely there as to get his body and mind ready for the upcoming country week and help it did as he won section four with 23 games.

Maree Sullivan and Greg Renner came in equal second with 21/20 from Mark Gorman on 17 games.

Section 5 The old silver fox in Pat Flynn and Russel Canning were seen patting each other on the back, gloating about what a match they had and how they tore apart the Copes (Andrew and Beth).

A volley here, a smash there, they could do no wrong as they equally won with a score of 22/16.

Andrew came in third with 18 games from Beth in fourth with 14 games.

Section 6 Geoff Allen took out section six with some classic whipping backhands down the line to assist with his winning score of 22/10.

Coming in second was Des Steele on 18 games from Terry Flynn in third with 16 games.

have picked up a new strain of the coronavirus and that being called the corona yips.

This week he finished the day with single figures to come in fourth position.

At day’s end he was seen with his psychologist in Russell ‘Troppo’ Canning who no doubt will get Max’s mind back on track, so all look out next week for Max to win with 24 games.

Section 7 It has been a long time coming for the old milko in John Shanley to get back on the winners list but back he did as he won section seven with a score of 23/13.

Coming in second was Geoff Davidson with 21 games from Peter Ablazej on 16 games.

The remaining spots were taken up by Tony Clarebrough (14 games) and Mick Keogh (12 games) with both players hitting some winners for the day, but not enough to worry the scorers too much.

WDCA Beechworth A Grade Women’s team is through to a second consecutive grand final after a 21 run win in the penultimate round.

A bye in the final round will see the team await a combatant in the final for season 2021/2022 of Goulburn Murray Cricket.

The penultimate game was a T20 played on home turf at Baarmutha Park in Beechworth against Shepparton Youth Club United who were second on the ladder. The WDCA Beechworth were sent into bat after losing the toss.

Openers Alex Randell and Crystal Stevens set the platform for the team with poise, working the singles and hitting over the field with any loose bowling.

The pair both reached the maximum 30 ball retirement with Randell scoring 19 and Stevens 29 in a brilliant batting display.

In the chase for quick runs late in the innings Sophie Panozzo and Bree Wojtowyez fell for three and one before coach Kate Burns was joined by Emmaline Howard.

This pair formed an excellent partnership and pushed the score to 100 in the final over, Howard making five runs.

Alyssa Priest came in and score one from three balls as Howard was dismissed off the last ball of the innings for 34 off 29 balls.

The team total was 4/103 off 20 overs.

After a short break, WDCA took to the crease and were able to bowling straight and full which restricted the runs from Shepparton Youth Club United with some excellent fielding capitalised on.

The highest scorer for the opposition was their number five batsman who scored 18 off 28 balls.

Only two other batsmen reached double figures with dot balls crucial to the WDCA Beechworth attack.

Neve White had figures of 0/16 off four overs; Alyssa Priest 0/13 off three overs; Sophie Pannozo 0/13 off four overs; Emmaline Howard 0/10 off two overs; Kate Burns 0/4 off two overs; Crystal Stevens 1/8 off three overs and taking her first wicket for the GMC season in just her second game was Erin Brond with 1/10 off two overs.

Two run outs were executed by Erin Brond and Sophie Panozzo.

After their 20 overs, Shepparton Youth Club United could only muster 4/82; giving the home team a wellearned 21 run victory.

WDCA Beechworth will play in the grand final on Sunday, February 20 most likely in Shepparton.

The final venue will be announced following the final round next Sunday.

Wangaratta g Lawn Tennis Club enters five teams into Swan Hill’s Countryy Week next week

THE Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club has entered five teams into the highly anticipated Victorian Country Week to be held in Swan Hill.

The event will run from Monday, February 14 through to Friday, February 18 with over 1000 players set to call Swan Hill home for the week and play off for the chance to lift a trophy in one of the 23 grades on offer.

Wangaratta Blue in the B Special 1 competition and cannot wait to hit the court in Swan Hill.

“It’s really exciting to be heading to Swan Hill, especially after missing out again last year,” Sullivan said.

“It’s a fantastic venue and it’s going to be great to catch up with some players who we’ve been playing

against for 20 years.

“There are great friendships and camaraderie at the tournament but the tennis is definitely competitive.”

Sullivan’s team will include Phil Peck, Kevin Callahan, John Brunner, Frazer Judd and Frank Harris with all players in fantastic form at club level.

“We’re really happy with how our team is looking,” Sullivan said.

“John Brunner and Phil Peck have been playing a lot of tennis and are in

form at the moment and then you have the stalwarts of Kevin Callahan, Frank Harris and myself with also the inclusion of some talented youth in Frazer Judd who hits the ball really well and has mobility on his side.”

Although the social side of country week is a big part of the tournament, Sullivan said all players are there to play as well as possible.

“No doubt the social side is a key motivation but once we’re on court the

competitive juices definitely come out,” he said.

“We all want to put our best foot forward and be as competitive as we can.

“We’ll go through a few bags of ice to get ourselves up for every match.”

All matches in all grades are played in doubles only with each pair of one team playing both pairs of the opposing team.

Play hits off at 9am on Monday all the way through to finals on Friday.
