council will be able to increase the plant from its current 5200 tonnes
capacity to 25,000 tonnes. This would give the facility the scope to take in all the organic waste within the region and beyond. The plant at Bowser is coming into its third year of operation and work is underway to ramp it up to
12,000 tonnes by mid-2022. Mayor Dean Rees said a full and comprehensive business case to expand the facility further has been developed. He said this would see capacity increased to 25,000 tonnes per annum and has
the potential to become a truly regional facility. “Council backs Independent member for Indi Helen Haines’ proposal for a Commonwealth contribution of $8 million in the March federal budget,” Cr Rees said.
“This funding will allow Wangaratta to become a hub for processing organic waste in North East Victoria. “Subject to funding, the availability of materials and Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approval, this expansion could be completed within two years.” ■ Continued page 2
