Smith races to biggest win of his career
MELBOURNE Cup fever was everywhere on Tuesday across the rural city as most locals made the most of the public holiday including some keen 'racegoers' at the Wangaratta Turf Club. A good crowd turned out in the Oaks Room to make the most of the carnival atmosphere despite the lack of ontrack action. CURFEW REVIEW Council cat p policyy to consider North East outcomes,, consult with communityy
WANGARATTA council will review the outcomes of cat curfews nationally and in the North East before assessing whether to implement similar constraints locally. Indigo Shire councillors last week green-lit a 24/7 cat curfew to begin six months from now, with the goal of

preventing domestic cats from leaving the boundary of their registered property unless under supervision. Some 86.18 per cent
of the 904 Indigo Shire community members surveyed were supportive of cat containment measures being introduced, with 60.18pc in favour of a 24hour curfew as opposed to a dusk to dawn constraint. Protecting local wildlife (94.5pc) was the major reason cited by those in
support of the move. Rural City of Wangaratta director sustainability and culture, Stephen Swart, said the success of cat curfews across the nation would be assessed as part of council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan review process. “Council does not
currently have a cat curfew in place and will review this by considering lessons learnt from other councils and appropriate measures tailored to our community,” he said. “Any future proposal to introduce a cat curfew will be informed by community engagement and will be
put forward as part of council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan review process.” Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability president Russell Sully said he would encourage council not to rule out implementing a curfew, particularly at night. ■ Continued page 2
