Young panner strikes gold

By CHLOE JAENICKE ELEVEN year old Sharlotte Bourne of Wangaratta won a national under 12s gold panning competition in Blackwood last Saturday.

Sharlotte was introduced to the hobby at the age of five through her Dad, Clint Bourne, and started competing three years ago.

“My Dad gold pans a lot and we also go out camping and do it,” she said.

“When I first (competed) I got bronze, now this year I’ve won.”

The aim of the competition is to pan the most amount of gold in the

least amount of time without making mistakes.

“They would melt gold into little squares and then hide it in some dirt and we had to pan it out and if you got the most in the least amount of time you win,” Sharlotte said.

Mr Bourne said there are even time penalties if they make mistakes.

“There’s six bits (of gold) in each heat and if you get all six bits in the least amount of time you win,” he said.

“If you lose you get a three minute penalty and if you don’t put a lid on the vile (a glass container to put the gold flecks in)

you get a two minute penalty.”

Mr Bourne even has a business where he manufactures and sells gold panning equipment.

“It was an interest from when I was a kid,” he said.

“I just tried to make the hobby into a job really and I’m sort of still in the process of still doing it and Sharlotte enjoys it as well.”

Sharlotte won a gold medal, a gold mining pack which had a vile filled with gold and a pan.

Community Heartbeat event later this month WANGARATTA’S Grit and Resilience Program is set to hold its sixth Heartbeat event for the local community at Boorhaman Golf Club later this month.

The Heartbeat events have formed the framework upon which the Grit and Resilience Program has developed, and coordinator Bek Nash-Webster believes the upcoming March 23 event will be equally as important.

“We would love community members to join us for a bit of fun, to hear what’s planned for the program and to share with us their ideas for building social connection and supporting community mental health and wellbeing,” she said.

“The sixth Heartbeat will also be a time for reflecting on the program and identifying the learning we want to take forward

as the program evolves into its next stage now that we have secured recurrent funding from the Victorian Government under the Social Inclusion Action Group Program.

“This is an opportunity for people to get involved in the Grit and Resilience Program, to connect and have fun.

“Heartbeat events have been a great opportunity to contribute to the shape of the program

and this role will be even more important moving forward - we want and need to work closely with the community as we evolve.”

The event is set to run from 5.30pm to 7pm, with a barbecue dinner provided and a game of footgolf available.

The court heard Catanzariti had previously advised Mr Parker during the latter’s tenure as chief executive officer of Australian Weaving Mills, and had been consulted regularly regarding plans to legally reduce Bruck’s workforce from as early as 2012 in order to manage “peaks and troughs” associated with the textile industry.

Mr Parker was said to have also sought ways to legally re-

duce the amount of redundancy pay available to staff, which, under a previous enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) had been capped at 75 weeks (with workers accruing 3.5 weeks per year of service).

Efforts to reduce the working week to four days for staff in order to manage a limited workload, as well as a voluntary retirement scheme for long-term staff to then be rehired on a casual basis were

also detailed before the court.

The court heard that a file note kept by Catanzariti following a conversation with Mr Parker in May 2014 detailed Bruck executives had committed to liquidating the company and selling to another, and asked for advice as to how to best pay out staff who would not be rehired following the eventual sale to ATM. Earlier on Monday, Ernst and Young tax advisor David Vigolo sat in the witness stand

as he was questioned over advice provided to Mr Johnson regarding a tax restructure in late 2011, which would aid the incorporation of Bruck Properties, Bruck Textiles and Bruck Sales and Marketing under the holding company Bruck Group.

He said he had also explored the potential to expand the group into the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

Climate leaders set to gather in Wangaratta CLIMATE change will be the centre of attention at a series of forums which kick off in Wangaratta this Friday.

Speakers from the political, legal, health, financial, public, and private sectors will discuss the business of climate change from their unique perspectives at the 2023 Goulburn Murray Climate Leaders Forum.

The forum’s three sessions will be held this Friday, as well as Friday, March 24 and Friday, April 28 in Wangaratta and will focus on three topics: Advocacy, sponsorship and support in a time of climate change; What is resilience in the face of extreme events; and Governance, legal and risk: impli-

cations of climate change.

Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees said council was thrilled to be participating in, and supporting, the forum in the rural city.

“The forum will bring experts from a range of sectors together to work on the challenges climate change presents in our region,” he said.

Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance (GMCA) host this inaugural forum which is also supported by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Alpine Valleys Community Leadership and North East Catchment Management Authority.

ecutive officer, said the forum is designed for decision-makers in local government in our region.

“A collection of informed, experienced speakers will present to participants,” Ms Hammond said.

Car enthusiasts revving to go WANGARATTA’S All GM Day motor show is attracting people from across the North East to Apex Park this Sunday, from 9am to 2pm.

All General Motors branded vehicles or machines are welcome, with entrants expected to come from all over Australia to show off their pride and joy.

With Holden manufacturing on Australian shores finished and even the Holden Supercars running their last race at the Adelaide 500 last December, all lovers of General Motors machinery should mark the date in their diaries.

Myrtleford resident Anthony Bell will be attending the event with his 1977 Holden A9X Torana.

“It probably took about four or five years to rebuild from the ground up,” he said.

“It was just a bare shell and I built it up from there.”

The 51-year-old was a mechanic for 29 years before starting up a screen and security door company, which is sponsoring the event.

“I started my apprenticeship at Holden back in the 80s and just fell in love with Holden cars,” he said.

This will be the first All GM day after missing the last two years due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A 65-year-old Wangaratta man has died following an incident that occurred while moving cattle at a Yarrawonga South property last week.

WorkSafe reported that it was understood the man was helping load cattle into a truck at about 11am on Tuesday, February 28 when he was hit by a pen gate and fell backwards, hitting his head on the ground.

Ambulance Victoria attended the scene and conveyed the man to hospital, however, he later passed away from injuries sustained.

WorkSafe is investigating the incident.

The death is the second workplace fatality this year, compared to 10 at the same time last year.

Images released earlier this week depicted a male riding an electronic bike, who police believe may be able to assist their investigation into a number of fraudulent purchases in the Wangaratta CBD in early January.

Time together is child’s play

RECENT research from Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital reveals that while most Australian parents recognise the importance of play for a child’s health, one in five believe it is not essential.

The RCH’s latest National Child Health Poll, conducted late last year, drew on data collected from a nationally representative sample of parents whose children were aged between one month and 17 years.

It explored outdoor play, digital play, and play away from the home.

The poll, ‘Australian Families: How We Play’, found that one in three parents sometimes don’t know how to play with their child, while one in eight parents believe play is mostly a waste of time.

While most parents said they enjoyed playing with their child, two thirds said they often found playing with their child hard or boring - the latter reported more often by fathers than mothers.

Encouragingly, 94 per cent of parents recognised play was important for a child’s health, including their physical wellbeing and brain development.

However, although 80 per cent of parents would like their children to spend more time outdoors, the poll found that less than

A third of parents said play should always be supervised by an adult, and a similar number believed it was not good for play to involve risk.

Paediatrician and poll director Dr Anthea Rhodes said the findings showed that while parents recognised the importance of play, there were still some knowledge gaps.

“Play is a crucial part of children’s learning and development, with so many benefits for physical, mental and social health,” she said.

That’s a feeling echoed by

Maddy Atkin, who in 2021 initiated Mullinmur Nature Play.

The nature playgroup meets at Wangaratta’s Mullinmur Billabong on Wednesdays during school terms, with each session attracting up to 10 families with young children who enjoy activities aimed at connecting kids to nature all for a gold coin donation.

A teacher, and mum to Jack and Pippa, Maddy said she had been keen to connect with like-minded families when she became a mother, but couldn’t find any outdoor-focused groups.

“Having kids during COVID, we didn’t get to interact with other families and kids as much as you

usually would, so it was a great opportunity for that,” she said.

“We started in April, 2021, and being outdoors, we didn’t have as many restrictions as there may have been for indoor activities. It’s just grown and grown.”

Maddy said she could relate to some of the results of the RCH study.

“It can be quite isolating at home at times, and play can sometimes feel boring, but kids love being outside.

It’s a chance to use your imagination a bit more, and play can be more kiddriven,” she said.

“Getting out and going to a playgroup is one way to do something differently and think outside the box with

“Or just simplify it, and go outside for a walk.”

Maddy said she was surprised by the number of parents who thought play shouldn’t involve risk.

“Play is all about kids testing the boundaries. It’s their job to play, and you’re just there to be a safety net if they need it,” she said.

Dr Rhodes agreed: “It can sometimes be challenging to identify the difference between a healthy level of risk and a situation that is hazardous, when it comes to children’s play.

“It’s about allowing

children and young people to have experiences that challenge and test them, without putting them in danger. That line will be different for every child.”

She said one of the most encouraging findings of the report was that almost all parents understood play was vital for a child’s physical wellbeing, brain development, social and emotional learning and mental health.

“Even though there is some hesitancy, most parents are keen to learn more about how to play with their child. And of course, play is not just for kids, play is also important for adults to keep us physically and mentally healthy too,” she said.

Sharing desire to see more women stand for council

WANGARATTA councillor Irene Grant is encouraging women considering nomination for council at next year’s election to think about enrolling in a program to help them decide by understanding what’s involved.

Applications have opened for the second round of the Labor Government’s Women Leading Locally Program, which aims to build gender equality on local government councils by 2025.

The program is equipping 125 local leaders with the connections and tools to campaign as candidates in the 2024 council elections.

Cr Grant, who has had two stints on council, plus three years as an administrator, said as women make up half the community in number it would be logical, even necessary for a whole lot of reasons to see women represented on council.

“Anyone interested in their community and willing to put in time to work at the council table should put up their hand,” she said.

“Programs which give people an ‘idea’ of what is required to be on council are particularly helpful - and helps people make up their minds before they put up their hands for election.

“Being a councillor, a mayor and administrator with the Rural City of Wangaratta has been rewarding.

“The ability to help make a positive difference to the community through decisions made at the council table is gratifying.”

Minister for Local Government, Melissa Horne, said this program is a fantastic tool in their goal of achieving 50-50 gender parity in local government by 2025.

“There is no better time to celebrate this than on International Women’s Day,” Ms Horne said.

“We’re breaking down the barriers many women face to stand for leadership positions, giving them the skills and resources to campaign with confidence.”

At the last local government elections in 2020, Victoria set a new national record for female representation with women making up 43.8 per cent of elected councillors.

The Women Leading Locally Program is being delivered by the Institute of Community Directors Australia in partnership with Women for Election - the first round has provided training and mentoring to 60 women from local government areas with low female representation.

The second round is open to women from a further 32 areas.

Applications for round two of the Women Leading Locally Program are open until Friday, April 14.

Embracing equity on International Women’s Day NORTHEAST Health Wangaratta (NHW) has continued key conversations around gender equity as it heads towards International Women’s Day today.

The international theme for 2023 is #embraceequity and the health service said it would encourage its team to think about how their work impacts gender equality.

NHW chief executive officer, Libby Fifis, said NHW is committed to progressing gender equity, understanding that gender balance is not

solely a women’s issue.

“We know that about 80 per cent of our workforce identify as female and we have strong female leadership, however, that doesn’t mean we are kicking all of the gender equity goals,” Ms Fifis said.

NHW’s Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-26 has a strong focus on education and training, as well as practical measures such as providing breastfeeding spaces at NHW campuses.

“Our Gender Equality Action Plan was developed in consul-

tation with our staff, including surveys and audits, and sets out key goals to further support gender equality across our service,” Ms Fifis said.

“From our previous workforce gender audit, we know that women are taking on the majority of caring responsibilities and some areas are still subject to gender stereotypes.

“We are excited to see progression in areas such as longer paid parental leave, provisions of superannuation payment when on unpaid pa-

rental leave, and more opportunities to learn about challenging biases and becoming more inclusive.

“Our message on International Women’s Day is that embracing equity looks different for everyone, so we encourage everyone to find their way to embrace equity.

“This could be listening to a podcast read a book about gender equity, or thinking about how their approach to work or play impacts on gender equity.”

INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Celebrating achievements of Australian women has dramatically increased in recent years across all areas of society.

More and more women are being elected at all levels of government, and more women are playing key roles in business although men still dominate the percentage of chief executive officers in top 200 companies.

But there is some way to go before true parity is achieved.

The gender pay gap remains with women on average earning 13 per cent less than their male counterparts.

Women’s retirement savings are even more out of whack, according to superannuation company MLC Australian women retire, on average, with 35 percent less super than men and one in three women across all age groups have no super at all.

A report released in August 2020 by Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) and Social Ventures Australia found that the number of older women at risk of homelessness in Australia is a staggering 405,000.

This includes 165,000 women aged between 45 – 55 years and 240,000 women aged 55 years and over.

The figures will be even worse now as the housing crisis, particularly rentals, has only become worse.

This year the IWD global campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity.

It encourages all of us to challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and seek out inclusion.

Collective activism, it says, is what drives change.

In other words, we all have a role to play, every day.

Greater prevention to combat COVID-19 IN its update to “Guidance to Certifying Deaths Due To Coronavirus Disease” in February 2023, the USA Centre for Disease Control has this to say, “emerging evidence suggests that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19, can have lasting effects on nearly every organ and organ system of the body, weeks, months and potentially years after infection.”

How is it that although the majority of deaths are in those supposedly past their use by date, that is the aged and those with pre existing health issues (a heartless and ethically dubious viewpoint), we are all now so comfortable with children and younger adults getting one dose after another?

Why, unlike other countries such as Belgium and France, have we not legislated updated indoor air quality standards for ventilation to reduce virus loads in public facilities and most importantly classrooms to reduce viral transmission?

Apparently the nation’s parliaments have upgraded ventilation where needed.

Vaccines and boosters may reduce the chances of serious acute illness and the chance of Long Covid but they don’t protect against getting infected with the virus.

Time we all woke up again to the need to avoid infection in the first place.

That means top quality ventilation of indoor areas, HEPA air filtration, masks (N95 standard) particularly where lots of people are breathing and rebreathing each other’s shared air, accurate tests and isolation when sick as part of long-term action.

For the sake of the long-term health of our children and grandchildren at the very least.

Income support increases too little THE Australian Council of Social Service is calling for a real increase to income support payments because routine indexation in line with CPI does little to address the inadequacy of income support.

On March 20, income support payments including JobSeeker will be increased by 3.7 per cent in line with CPI changes from June to December last year, as part of routine indexation of payments.

PHOTO: Kurt Hickling This increase will not deal with the fact that JobSeeker is not enough to cover food, utilities and medicines, not to mention keep up with the cost of essentials, with rent up by more than 10 per cent, food by 9.2 per cent and electricity up 8.6 per cent in the 12 months to December.

The JobSeeker indexation increase is just $1.77 a day, taking the payment for a single person from $48 to $50 day.

The payment will still be 57 per cent below the minimum wage, 34 per cent below the pension and well below the poverty line.

People receiving Youth Allowance currently $40 a day - will not receive any increase, as Youth Allowance and other student payments are only indexed once a year.

The government must deliver a real increase to JobSeeker and related payments to at least bring them in line with the pension, currently $73 a day.

People on JobSeeker and related payments cannot afford to eat enough, cannot get essential medication or healthcare, and often go into debt to pay their energy bills.

Being forced to go without the basics like enough food impairs people’s ability to look for paid work and engage in their community.

While every little bit extra helps, this

indexation will not ensure that people can cover basic costs because their incomes were grossly inadequate before prices rose.

The only way to address this problem is to deliver a real increase to JobSeeker and related payments so that they are lifted to at least the same level as the pension.

ACOSS research last year found that 96 per cent of people receiving these payments who were in private rental were paying more than 30 per cent of their income in rent.

Almost all respondents said that their inadequate income negatively affected their physical health and wellbeing.

TARRAWINGEE residents relished the opportunity to tuck into free coffee and plenty of treats on February 25, for Tarrawingee’s Community Day organised by ‘Pitcher This’ winner Annette Shanley.

The local ‘Pitcher This’ competition, run by the Rural City of Wangaratta, was held at the Plough Inn on November 10, when Annette pitched her idea of a free community coffee morn-

ing as a way to introduce her new business, Nets Little Tarravan.

She was voted the winner by the community, with other funded projects on the night including ground improvements at the old Tarrawingee public school, Boys to the Bush speedball construction and Everton Hall’s bush dance.

The community coffee day had locals huddled around Nets Little Tarravan at the Plough Inn, where free coffee and samples of treats including muffins and sau-

sage rolls were offered.

Annette said the idea came about as a way to bring the community together and for her to get to know her neighbours.

“It was just a lovely day, so nice to be able to introduce the neighbours I knew to each other and I was able to meet a lot of new faces as well, it was fantastic,” she said.

“I live in Tarrawingee but I don’t know a lot of locals, so it was my way to get to know them and also for me to thank the regulars

Annette has been operating her coffee and treats van beside the Plough Inn since December last year, after leaving her previous job to pursue her passion.

YARRUNGA Primary School, Wangaratta Primary School and Galen Catholic College were privileged to welcome Elena Salerno, Chantelle Van Der Hoek, Dann Wilkinson and Troy Schrieber from the Australian Ballet to their schools last week.

Students from all three schools spent time with the performers in preparation for a free performance for their families and home schooling students at the Wangaratta Performing Arts & Convention Centre (WPACC) on Friday morning.

During the workshops, students took the themes and motifs of Romeo and Juliet and developed their own choreography.

The central theme of love was evident throughout all performances, even with dramatic music colouring their movements.

Following the school students’ performances, the professionals performed their 24 minute version of Romeo and Juliet.

Yarrunga students from grades three and four were also lucky enough to have a workshop with the troupe and their instruction and dancing left positive memories for a number of students including nine year old Tyson Twitchett-Marsh.

“Watching them act and do the ballet, it was very nice,” Tyson said, noting he learnt some new steps and was eager to share them with staff members after the workshop.

Principal Fran Waterman said having the performers working with year three to six students was wonderful and “many surprised us with their enthusiasm”.

“Being able to offer experiences such as this to our students is of great benefit to them; it brings out hidden talents, promotes self-confidence and can spark new future pathways that they may not have thought of,” Ms Waterman said.

Local schools are looking forward to a number of activities and experiences during 2023 and with any luck, they will encourage more students to find enjoyment from new experiences as well as deepen their current interests.

Digital literacy for gender equality

By CHLOE JAENICKE WOMEN’S Health Goulburn North East is launching new interactive online courses exploring topics such as equity and digital inclusion.

Their first event will be a free event held on International Women’s Day today with the theme of Cracking the Code: Innovation for Gender Equality.

Amanda Kelly, Women’s Health Goulburn North East’s chief executive officer, said the event is open to everyone regardless of gender and will focus on digital literacy.

“The eLearning platform is designed for people of all genders in our region that are working towards a more equal and accessible community,” she said.

“The event will provide participants with an overview of the issues that we face in our region regarding digital access and literacy.”

The event will feature Tammy Atkins, a digital literacy educator, as a guest speaker.

The focus of the event will be fostering safe and inclusive online spaces and digital inclusion in rural context as well as exploring digital

literacy, gender equity and rurality interact.

Ms Kelly said they plan on running the event through a series of presentations from different speakers.

“The event is short, just half an hour with presentations from the WHGNE CEO, Amanda Kelly, Tammy Atkins and a brief demonstration of our eLearning platform from Dani Kline, our instructional designer,” she said “We will make some time for questions from the audience.”

Bushfire dirties the waters for city Wednesday, March 6, 2013

A SLUG of dirty water has been flowing down the Ovens River since Monday, affecting Wangaratta and Glenrowan’s water supply.

The Wangaratta Wastewater Treatment Plant has been forced to stop treating water, which was visibly dark and muddy because remaining ash and dirt from the Harrietville bushfire was washed into the river during thunderstorms in Bright last week.

The issue prompted North East Water (NEW) to ask Wangaratta and Glenrowan residents to only use water for essential needs to ease demand on the system until supplies were brought back up again.

But NEW spokesman, Luke Jobson, said the Ovens River started to clear yesterday afternoon and water should

start to be treated at the plant again today.

“Things should be back to normal,” he said.

NEW operations executive manager, John Day, said the corporation had been closely observing water quality and aimed to get through the short period without imposing water restrictions on Wangaratta and Glenrowan.

“Supplies are being supplemented with groundwater along with the existing stored water,” he said on Monday.

Mr Jobson warned dirty water could get into the Ovens River again in the future as Harietville recovers from the fire.

“It’s probably going to be an issue whenever there’s rain over the next few months,” he said.

Customers in Harrietville and Bright also heeded the call to reduce water usage last week because of mud in that section of the river.

Day in the life of Falls Creek snow groomer Kenton Ford AFTER working in race and events teams at Falls Creek and Whistler Blackcomb, Kenton Ford (26) made the change to snowmaking five years ago and towards his lifelong dream of becoming a snow groomer.

“I basically get to drive Tonka trucks around all night - it’s the best,” says Kenton, who grew up in Falls Creek and has been on skis since before he could walk thanks to parents who worked on the mountain - dad Campbell was a lift operations supervisor and mum Karen was a lift operator.

During the winter season, he works in both snowmaking and grooming with his day starting at 6:30pm when he’ll make toast for ‘breakfast’ while his housemates are cooking steak for dinner, admitting his appetite and body clock are “all over the place”.

He’ll head to the mountain for an 8pm start when his team will come together to plan the night shift, see what the weather is doing and figure out what the snow will be like.

Then they get rugged up and jump on snowmobiles to get the snow guns ready, deicing them in preparation.

“There’s nothing better than when the sun comes up and you can see how many snowmaking whales you’ve made and see the groomers

pushing it out - it’s a pretty satisfying job.”

At Falls Creek, there’s a grooming crew of nine through the night with 6-7 snowmakers working at the same time.

Kenton said they all get on really well and are there to help each other.

“Riding around on the sleds, looking at the stars and watching the sunrises and sunsets in all sorts of colours from up on the mountain is great,” he said.

“Sometimes there are meteor showers, which are cool to watch because they take you by surprise.”

He said there are all sorts of spots and runs to make snow on, but he loves Wombats, which is home to one of Australia’s longest ski races.

“You’re fighting the wind on that long run, but it makes the time go quickly,” Kenton said.

“And when the snowguns

turn off and it’s dead quiet on the mountain it can be really peaceful.”

After working at Whistler Blackcomb for a couple of seasons, he’s experienced negative 24C temperatures, but he was still surprised at how cold it gets in Australia and he makes sure he layers up with an extra jumper or two when the temperatures dip below zero.

After work finishes around 8:30am, he’ll jump on his skis for a quick couple of runs before heading to bed around 10am.

It doesn’t leave him much time for a social life, but his other role as a DJ gets him out among more people in a few bars and a nightclub around Falls Creek on his nights off.

He’s also into kite skiing, which he says gets him up the top of a hill really quickly.

He said being a snowmaker and groomer is fantastic if you’re prepared to work hard and he loves it, adding: “I’m in my dream job now and I’ll stick with it for the rest of my life.”

Carboor Upper Road remains closed

IN 2017, Joseph Robertson, Eli Hack, Maddison Rea and Shylah Witte all took part in the Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Run. The four were just starting their primary school journey as prep students at St Patrick’s and helped to edge out the other schools to win the 2km Primary School Challenge and $1000 cash prize.

Now in grade six, it will be the last time they can participate in the 2km challenge and they’d like to see their school back on the winner’s podium for the third time.

St Patrick’s went back-toback in 2016 and 2017 and were narrowly beaten by St Bernard’s in 2018 so there’s plenty of pride at stake.

Should St Patrick’s claim the win this year, it will see them equalling the number of wins by Wangaratta Primary School who took out back-to-back-to-back wins in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Wangaratta West Primary School also took out back-toback wins in 2019 and 2020 while Milawa was crowned the winner in 2015 and Cathedral

As with the event last year, there will be two ‘waves’ for the Primary School Challenge - Racers and Chasers.

The Racers wave is for Prep/Foundation to year six students who want to race hard and challenge themselves to achieve their best.

The Chasers wave is for all primary school aged

children, along with siblings, parents, grandparents or carers who just want to participate without ‘racing’ to the finish line.

All children in both waves will receive a medal at the finish and their official time will be published on the website and in the Wangaratta Chronicle newspaper the following week.

The winning school will be awarded a $1000 cash

prize thanks to event partner R J Sanderson & Associates and will be given a perpetual trophy to display for 12 months.

A presentation will be arranged to take place at the winning school within a couple of weeks of the event.

CARBOOR Upper Road remains closed to all traffic after sustaining significant damage in the flooding events of late 2022.

“A recent inspection of the road has highlighted further damage and the road is at risk of total failure,” according to Rural City of Wangaratta director, community and infrastructure, Marcus Goonan.

“We will have a final design completed next week and the tender process for the works will start.

“We expect the works to be completed by end of May, weather dependent.

“We understand this is frustrating but please don’t drive around or remove the road closure signs.

“You may think you know the road but someone else may not.

“If you require access for some reason please ring the council office and we can work through a safe option.”

While Carboor Upper Road remains closed to traffic, detours will be in place on Lake Buffalo and Gum Flats Creek roads.

Motorists are asked to follow the detour signs.

Budding exhibition at Art Gallery on Ovens AN exhibition of new work by Judi McCann and Rachel Flynn which is based around a floral theme, has opened at the Art Gallery on Ovens in Wangaratta this week.

Called Budding, it is a combination of the old and the new - bringing together traditional floral art and still life, with works made utilising new digital technology.

Budding’s Rachel Flynn is best known as a writer of picture books and novels for children as well as short fiction and poetry for adults.

Art has been on ongoing interest, and she now has the opportunity and time to participate.

She describes her collection as digital collage - each piece comprises photographic and illustrative elements layered to create the final composition.

“The content of my work is sourced from my home and from the homes of friends, as well as from op shops,” she said.

“Flowers have come from gardens around my neighbourhood or have been sent as photographs from friends.”

While Rachel’s work is confined to interiors, Judi McCann’s works steps outside into the garden and on to the street.

Her grade five teacher said of her many years ago, that ‘she

had the highest art potential of the grade’, but that potential was only realised in recent times when she adopted new digital technology and rediscovered art.

She now works intensively to produce her digital artworks and is pleased to consider herself a ‘budding’ artist.

In this exhibition, Judi presents her digital paintings of garden-variety flowers in stunning close-up or in context in the gardens of suburban houses.

The exceptions are the whimsical flowers of her own creation, in a series of still lifes set in artists’ rooms.

The concerts will feature Josef Haydn’s String Quartet No 67 in F major, Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte and Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No 11 in F minor “Serioso”.

The imaginary artists have set up the vases of flowers and other items in preparation for their own still life works.

“Art is a way of holding memories, both for the artist and the viewer,” said Judi.

“The flowers, objects and views included in this series say something about us and about the times and places in which we live - they are scenes familiar to the viewer.

Budding is open every day from 10am until 4pm (except Sunday, when it will be open from 10am until 2pm.)

An opening celebration will be held on Saturday from 2.30pm and all are welcome.

It’s a wrap for community bowls in Moyhu The ultimate fifth and final round of Moyhu Community Bowls was held last Friday with a large crowd attending to see some great bowling over three games.

After three rounds, Greta Cricket Club was the team to beat followed by Edi Fire Brigade and Moyhu Netballers who were locked in equal second place.

Round four did not alter much, and so it was left to the final round for those three or four challengers to bridge the gap.

Round five winning team was Moyhu Netballers represented by Sonia Kogan, Georgia Sampson and Olivia Baker and tense moments ensued as Max Baker and assistants tallied the final scores.

Despite the enthusiastic vocal encouragement of their supporters, the chasers were unable to rise to the occasion and Greta Cricketers - represented by John Salafia and David Allen - were the champions, taking the $100 cheque from Edi Fire Brigade and Moyhu Netballers, who tied in second place.

The $400 raffle prize was won by Moyhu Historical Motors represented by Corey Sloan, Sam McKenzie and Rob Hulley and the meat tray raffle was won by club secretary, Mary Grimshaw.

Moyhu Bowls Club thanked all who participated and look forward to running its popular community bowls event again.

Solar upsize aim PROPONENTS behind a solar farm at North Wangaratta are looking to upsize, increasing the facility from a 33MW capacity to 40MW. A planning permit for a renewable energy facility was granted by Wangaratta council in 2016 and since then Clean Peak Energy has purchased an adjacent 17.5 hectare parcel of industrial land at 109 WangarattaEldorado Road, North Wangaratta.

Close to the corner of Bowser Road and Coleman Road is the North Wangaratta Family Motel - a small commercial motel that previously objected to the expansion of the solar facility.

To the south of the site over WangarattaEldorado Road is the North Wangaratta Industrial Precinct and immediately to the northwest of the site is the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.

As part of the proposed expansion of the facility, a review of the existing native vegetation to be retained and removed across the whole site has been undertaken.

A native vegetation report has been prepared by a qualified consultant outlining a holistic approach to addressing the remnant native vegetation, with the aim of maximising both the biodiversity values and the layout of solar arrays across the site.

The amendment states that the new parcel of land is “largely devoid of remnant vegetation” and

several native trees along the boundary will be retained to offset the removal of others.

However, to create “greater efficiencies and generation capacity” across the whole site, the report proposes the removal of an additional 19 scattered remnant native trees, on top of the 14 (plus one dead tree) already approved.

The plan shows the proposed expansion of

parcel of land.

Solar arrays are located in blocks with orientation to maximise solar exposure and space between them for maintenance and emergency vehicles to traverse the site.

A continuation of the perimeter firebreak and access track is proposed along the western boundary of the new parcel where it abuts 210 Bourke Road.

Plenty of positives from Hawks’ first hit out

WANGARATTA Rovers had their first hit out for the year on Saturday.

The Hawks faced Mansfield at Mansfield in a five period affair which proved a solid first match for the year.

It was the club’s first look at new recruits including forward Tom Baulch and big man Daniel Hughes.

Wangaratta Rovers football operations manager Barry Sullivan

said there were plenty of positives to take from the match.

“It was a very good hit out for our first one of the year,” Sullivan said.

“Mansfield are a good opposition with good credentials having finished third in the Goulburn Valley League last season.

“In the first half we showed that we could match it with their better line-up and then, after that both sides interchanged a few players so, we ran 36 blokes throughout the five quarters.

“It was pleasing to see the hard

work done in pre-season culminate in a practice match.”

Sullivan had plenty of praise for a number of players.

“We had a number of younger guys like Cam Chamberlain, Jack Gerrish and Ky Williamson all play well but we also had proven performers like Alex Marklew and Dylan Stone do well and Cody Schutt was stable down back too,” he said.

“Daniel Hughes did what we expected and was athletic and strong in the contest so he’ll be a valuable asset to us as well.

“’Prime Train’ (Baulch) has finished his NTFL season with the Darwin Buffaloes and he was very serviceable as well, he only played three quarters but his athleticism and coverage of the ground was very impressive.”

The Rovers have another two practice matches lined up before their round one derby against Wangaratta on Good Friday (April 7).

The Hawks will meet Lavington at Cathedral College on March 18, followed by Euroa at Euroa the following weekend.

2023 AWFA season is upon us

THE Albury Wodonga Football Association season is almost here and Wangaratta City is ready to go.

The Devils kick off their season against Cobram in both the division one men and women as months of pre-season work gets put into practice.

It’s an exciting time of the year for all soccer-goers, including Wangaratta City first year coach Raff Molinaro.

“It feels a bit strange having done all the preparation for round one and it’s now just around the corner,” Molinaro said.

“I remember back to November, December and we were just doing light sessions and all of a sudden round one’s here.

“We’ve played some practice games and got some fitness into everyone’s legs and also play one tonight (Tuesday night) so hopefully that’ll set everyone’s minds to this weekend.

“We’ve been able to give a lot of the young players a go in the practice games and haven’t had a full squad in one game yet so it’ll be interesting to see how we go this weekend.”

A number of former Devils players have returned to the club including goalkeeper Jaxon Osmotherly, Ryan Van Der Steeg and Rahul Pahina.

“It’s been encouraging to see a few former Wangaratta City players come back to the club,” Molinaro said.

“Jaxon Osmotherly is back and

has a lot of experience in the senior team so he’ll be a great cover for Tommy McCarron who was our Irish keeper last year.

“Ryan Van Der Steeg is back after a few years off and once he finds fitness he’ll be a great inclusion, and Rahul Pahina is also back after a year off.

“It’s a credit to the atmosphere at Wangaratta that former players want to come back to the club.”

The Lady Devils will field sides in both the division one and two competitions.

FORMER North Wangaratta coach Josh Warren is returning to the Tallangatta and District League.

After three years at the Hawks, Warren has signed as assistant coach of Dederang Mount Beauty as he looks to keep the side as a finals threat.

Warren said he thoroughly enjoyed his first job in coaching at North Wangaratta.

Warren was replaced at North Wangaratta by non-playing coach Steve Manning.

“A lot of people at the time told me I was crazy to take the job at North Wangaratta but I really loved the challenge,” Warren said.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the club who took a chance on a rookie coach.

“Being a football coach is a lot different from cricket.

“I found that you have to be a lot more sympathetic in regards to all the excuses why blokes can’t train.

“You also have to be a life coach and psychiatrist all rolled into one.

“But I wouldn’t change a thing and have made some lifelong friends at the club and I hope they can go well this season.”

Aggregate competition heating up

By PHIL PECK WITH only three rounds to go of the 2022/23 season, the aggregate title is still up for grabs with a number of people in the running.

In the men’s aggregate the winner will come from either Matt Allen, Greg Renner, Max McAulliffe, Geoff Davidson and there is no leaving out Russell Canning who seems to strive on the pressure of a close tussle come end of year.

The ladies title appears to be out of two with Beth Cope and Maree Sullivan fighting it out down the straight.

Saturday’s competition saw six sections take to the courts.

Section one saw John Brunner win all four sets to end the day with a glass on 24/13.

In second position and hitting the off backhand well was Matt Allen with 20 games from Kevin Callahan on 19 games.

Mark Brown and Frazer Judd fought out the remaining places with Mark edging ahead at the end of the day to take fourth position.

It was like a day at the races in section three as Ben Kneebone won in a canter down the straight with a score of 24/10.

The stewards will need to

make an adjustment to the ladder as he most definitely will rise up the All-Star Mile rankings.

In second position was Greg Renner on 20 games from Matt Murray with 17 games.

It was tight for fourth and fifth position with a couple of old stagers baring there molars to breeze in the last set as Pat Flynn (14 games) and Peter Curran (12 games) fought it out to the line.

Mark Gorman and Jamie Almond had a titanic battle in section four with Mark

edging ahead with 23 games versus Jamie’s 22 games.

The left handed swinging serve of Phil Dryden was not hitting the lines as they were the previous week as he finished in third with 21 games.

Andrew Cope came in fourth position with 20 games from Alan Busk on 18 games.

Russell O’Brien was celebrating under the old oak tree like he had won the Melbourne Cup by eight lengths as he finished the day with 24/8.

Russell Canning was a

dejected soul as he finished in second position with 18 games.

The remaining players in the section were a shattered lot as Geoff Allen (14 games), Max McAulliffe (14 Games) and Tony Clarebrough (10 games) had no answers to the speed around the court of the Russell twin towers.

Section six was played out on court 14 with some exceptional shots being hit but there was only one winner and this was Geoff Davidson on 22 games.

In second was Beth Cope

with 20 games from John Shanley on 17 games.

The remaining spots were close with the old postie in Peter Ablazej (15 games) edging ahead of the State Rivers stalwart in Mick Keogh who ended the day with 14 games.

NERTA teams win through to grand finals

Section 1 RUTHERGLEN are the first team through to the section one grand final after they defeated Wang Hardcourt on Saturday.

Before the mixed sets the two teams were locked at three sets and 40 games each.

It was time for someone from either team to step up and stamp their authority.

It was Rutherglen captain Jono “too many keys” Keys and Tasanne James that played flawless tennis against their opponents and never allowed them to find a rhythm and a consistency that would get them back into the match.

Hardourt fought to the finish but in the end Rutherglen had too many answers to the questions Hardcourt posed.

Rutherglen’s best were Scott Francis, Jono Keys and Helen Fuge.

Hardcourts’ best were Kerrie Henderson, Matt Lucas and Kylie Doig.

Wahgunyah has bowed out of the flag race at the hands of Corowa, after a successful season in section one.

Wahgunyah never threatened to cause an upset although they were always thereabouts.

Corowa controlled the match from the outset and were determined not to let this match slip, as they played steady consistent tennis.

Corowa put the icing on the cake by winning the three mixed sets to ensure themselves a comfortable victory over Wahgunyah.

Corowa’s was an even team performance but Claire Davidson shone out with three sets.

Wahgunyah had none better than Travis “Ronald” McDonald, Kylie Greig and Max Harvey.

Section 2 Wang Hardcourt have one hand on the premiership shield after they demolished their nearest rivals Everton Red on Saturday.

Everton were always behind the eight ball after the

first two sets, and they never recovered.

Everton went close to putting themselves back into the match with a couple of close sets but the youthful exuberance of Hardcourt held sway and they galloped away with a comfortable victory.

Everton will need to regroup if they are to win back the right to challenge Hardcourt in this week’s preliminary final against Myrrhee.

Chris Lestino, Henry Dean and Tomo Moriya were outstanding for Hardcourt, while Jo Lucas, Julie Deretic and Mel Hellibrand fought hard for Everton.

Myrrhee have won the right to contest the preliminary final after they narrowly defeated Boorhaman on Saturday.

The match was neck and neck all day, firstly Boorhaman had the momentum then it swung back to Myrrhee and when it mattered the experienced Myrrhee team used all their years of finals experience to gain the ascendancy.

Boorhaman were far from disgraced and can hold their heads high after their performance.

Boorhaman’s best were Jack Nolan, Shirley Fuller and Darren Saward.

Section 3 Wahgunyah Wahnation (Kane Palmer, Jack Reid, Ollie Struve, Andrew Palmer) held on to win against a determined Wahgunyah United (Brad Schmidt, Matt Davis, Brian Jones, Rob Hill).

The match was in the balance with two sets remaining and it was the Wahnation team that steadied in a crisis to come out on top.

Boorhaman (Nick Batchelor, Merryn Byrne, Jack Keys, Darby Parr) have advanced to the preliminary with a win over Wooragee (Alison “Beetroot” Maher, Mark Knoth, Dean Bensted, Eiylish McRostie).

Wooragee were unfortunate to lose a player to illness early which made their

task near impossible but to their credit they continued to play the match to completion.

Section 2: Everton will regroup and return with a clear head and a different attitude to claim a victory over Myrrhee.

Myrrhee faces a heavy schedule in the latter part of the week which will disrupt their preparation and in turn affect their performance.

Section 3: Wahgunyah United should win against Boorhaman and return for a rematch against Wahnation next week.

Boorhaman are hit with unavailability of some players which may make it difficult for them to win.

Juniors: Wahgunyah have been the best performed team for the year and it will only be stage fright that will stop them from defeating Corowa Hewitt.

Corowa Hewitt would not surprise if they upset the favourites but things will need to fall their way.

Moyhu fall at final hurdle B1: MOYHU went down to St James at Wangaratta in the B1 grand final on Saturday.

In front of a strong crowd of spectators Moyhu got off to a good start to hold a small lead before St James kicked into gear and began to open up a healthy lead at the halfway mark.

Moyhu managed to close the gap to just over double figures in the second half, but St James resisted the challenge and ran away with the game.

Stuart Brain, Joe Northey, Graham Batten and Neale Grimshaw (13-19) went down to Beth Parker’s rink and Ian Ritchie, Neil Magee, Howard White, and Anthea Nockels (11-19) lost to Stephen Bament’s rink.

WDCA Under 12 division champions decided THE Blue and Gold divisions in the under 12 Wangaratta and District Cricket Association have new premiers, following the division grand finals on Saturday.

City Colts White claimed victory in the Blue Division grand final by three runs against Beechworth Wanderers Blue, and the Gold Division title was claimed by Yarrawonga Mulwala Bulls by four wickets over Wangaratta Magpies White.

City Colts White was sent in to bat after Beechworth won the toss in their match, and made

7/64 from their 20 overs.

Luca Solimo top scored with 12 from 19 deliveries, including two boundaries, while Beechworth’s Luke Balzer took 2/5 from three overs.

With a score to chase, Beechworth’s openers laid a strong foundation but it was George Pfahlert who shone with the bat, belting 19 from 49 deliveries in an innings which lasted almost an hour.

However, the City Colts were too good with the ball, with player of the match Liam Solimo taking 2/2 from his three overs on top of his 7*.

The Wangaratta Magpies won the toss and batted first in their grand final, with Timothy Tilbrook outstanding with the bat.

Tilbrook made 17* as the Magpies worked their way to a competitive 5/94.

Five Yarrawonga Mulwala bowlers took a wicket apiece, with Benji Wollington the best among them with figures of 1/5 from his two overs.

In response, Yarrawonga Mulwala opener Darcy Hargreaves led the way with the willow, smashing

THE Ovens and King Football Netball League remains buoyant at the prospect of a full 2023 season in both seniors and reserves football competitions.

Numbers across multiple codes of community sport were of concern following the COVID pandemic and subsequent complications, however, an uninterrupted and seemingly ‘back to normal’ 2022 season seems to have stabilised participation numbers in the O&K. League operations manager Pranav Menon said in his communications with clubs, it was all systems go for both competitions.

“When you speak about numbers in January and February, I think it’s always low and that’s been the case in all clubs,” he said.

“I’ve been in contact with all clubs because we have a few meetings before the season, and all the clubs have had good numbers in regards to reserves and seniors.

“There are no concerns from any of the clubs that they’d struggle to fill the reserves.

“If there are injuries or anything in the season, they’re capable of getting enough numbers, they have plans for that.”

to declining numbers - the 2019 edition of the thirds competition only featured four teams, down from the seven sides who played just a decade prior.

Menon said numbers in the Wangaratta and District Junior Football League, which feed into the O&K, were higher than before the pandemic hit.

“A positive note to that is the junior league, which is a base for the Ovens and King league, has been at a high,” he said.

“Registration numbers have been really good, much better than in 201718 when the pandemic was not around.

“That’s a really positive point, that the junior base is growing in the region that creates a strong base for Ovens and King clubs in the future.”

Bright senior coach Paul Harrison said reserves numbers at training have been as strong as ever.

“We’re pretty lucky, to be honest, we’ve got a fairly solid list with a lot of local guys.

“We’ve probably had about 50 train, so I think our twos numbers will still be pretty good.”

The 2023 Ovens and King season kicks off in just over three weeks, with the first bounce of round one set for Saturday, April 1.
