RAIN DASHES HOPES OF A PERFECT START FOR COUNTRY WEEK

AUSSIE DAY FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

UNRELENTING rainfall in Wangaratta yesterday saw the first round of junior Country Week cricket matches abandoned. It was a disappointing false start for WDCA U15 co-captains Lucas Ham (left) and Reid McNamara, and their fellow team mates, who only got two overs in against their CAW opponents. “We’d been looking forward to this for the past month so it’s not ideal,” the captains said. “We’ve got a pretty good team and are hoping to go well this year...we’re to play Benalla on Monday but that may not happen either because of the rain.” ■ Further story on the rain, and calls for help to the Wangaratta SES on page 3. inclusive and accessible opportunities for locals to be and stay active. Developed with the help of funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, the document will provide a blueprint for programming, priorities, and activation of both existing and planned

open spaces within the municipality. Along with the survey quoted in the draft strategy, community engagement to develop the draft strategy was sought via drop-in sessions and stakeholder interviews, in order to canvass a broad cross-section of the community.

A number of government organisations and agencies were also consulted, with input from specialist agencies including Sport and Recreation Victoria, Gateway Health, Sport North East, Tourism North East and Parks Victoria. “We know the impact of well-planned and managed

community spaces,” rural city deputy mayor Harvey Benton said. “In our rural communities, a reserve can be the heart of the community, and in Wangaratta they provide somewhere to gather, to play, and to build connections. ■ Continued page 2
