SUMMER LOVING
16-Page Feature
AFTER our wet and mild spring, Wangaratta and district residents have been soaking up the sun in our first week of summer. Wangaratta Splash Park has been getting a healthy workout, with four year old Fletcher Kelley among those enjoying the cool outdoor facilities last Saturday, when the temperature crept up to a high of 29.1 degrees Celsius at 6.30pm. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting another maximum of 29 degrees today, with cooler days tomorrow and Friday before the temperature rises to 28 and 29 degrees this weekend. Odour crackdown A SOUTH Wangaratta meatworks business has been issued a notice to comply by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) due to foul odours, which have been emitting across the town for several weeks, impacting the local community. the EPA issued the notice for the company “to take immediate action to reduce odour escaping its property and impacting the local community”. The odour is caused by the amount of organic matter in
the wastewater exceeding acceptable ratio levels. The effects have been widespread with hundreds of local households having to remain indoors, unable to turn on air-conditioners and sickened by pungent odours infiltrating indoor living areas. EPA issued the notice on the company last Friday requiring it to make changes to its wastewater treatment
processes to reduce odours from its site. “We have received a large number of complaints from the local community which has been badly affected by the odour,” EPA North East regional manager Renee Palmer said. “EPA licensed sites operate under strict regulations that protect human health and the environment.
“These regulations include the general environmental duty (GED). “The GED requires anyone conducting activities that pose risks to human health and the environment to minimise those risks so far as reasonably practicable. “Odour can cause discomfort and some people may want to remove themselves from the area if possible.
“Odour does not cause long term issues and once removed any ill-effects being felt should quickly reduce.” Ms Palmer said she expected the company to move quickly to implement the requirements of the notice, but should these measures not improve the situation then additional regulatory actions will be considered by the EPA. ■ Continued page 2
