Nationals confirm Elizabeth Fisher to contest Indi election By JEFF ZEUSCHNER THE Nationals have confirmed Browns Plains farmer Elizabeth Fisher as their party’s preselected candidate to contest the seat of Indi at this year’s federal election. Speaking to the Wangaratta Chronicle on Friday, the mother of three who has been “deeply invested” in her rural community between Rutherglen and Wodonga for the last two decades, said she was looking forward to her first foray into politics. “I’m someone always prepared to put up my hand to get stuff done...that’s been my prime motivation to stand,” Mrs Fisher said. “While I understand some key issues, I’m am looking forward to getting around the electorate, meeting and listening to people to find out what is important to them.
“My goal is to make sure our leaders in Canberra not only listen but make the decisions for the benefit of Indi. “The trend to Independents concerns me. “I know from experience that making decisions is the only way to get things done. “Being part of a Coalition team is the best way to achieve this to ensure our region gets its fair share of funding. “Indi will not be taken for granted if I have the honour of representing the electorate.” Mrs Fisher joins incumbent independent Helen Haines, the Liberal’s Ross Lyman, Labor’s Nadia David and the Green’s Benjamin Gilbert as confirmed candidates to contest the seat at the federal election, which must take place before May 21. ■ Continued page 3

an average of $1708. Friday’s weaner heifer sale brought in $4,463,845 for 2142 head at an average of $2083.96 each, compared to last year’s 2713 head fetching $4,191,187.50 at an average of $1545 each.
Wangaratta Livestock Exchange manager Andrea Nankervis said it was a record week for the complex. “It was definitely the best blue ribbon week we’ve had, prices are skyrocketing and there were greater numbers overall,” she told the Wangaratta Chronicle. “Thank you for the vendors for supporting us and also to the agents for encouraging them to do so.
“We’re hoping to keep building on this and we’re very competitive in pricing. “Our February sales always outdo the other January weaner sales and the quality is there.” Last week’s sales follow a massive year for the exchange, with 36,219 head sold for record prices totalling just shy of $66m. of a good field of buyers. “There were some northern buyers but in the main it was locals with a lot of farmers after heifers to join with their bulls,” Mr Keane said. “It’s a big change on the last three or four years with famers looking to restock.” Online sales were also popular through AuctionsPlus which Mr Keane said made up around 10 per cent of sales. ■ Continued page 13
