LIFTS ROLLING AS RESORTS GET EARLY START TO SNOW SEASON MT HOTHAM and Falls Creek kicked off their 2022 snow season a week early on Saturday, with lifts rolling and heavy snowfall greeting excited locals and visitors to the alpine resorts. Mt Hotham Skiing Company general manager Nathan Butterworth said incredible snowfall and snowmaking conditions earlier in the week had allowed the resort to get its earliest opening in 22 years. Both resorts opened with a snow depth of more than 40cms, which will continue to build with up to a metre of fresh snow forecast this week, providing an incredible base ahead of the traditional opening this long weekend. Falls Creek Ski Lifts general manager Richard Phillips said it was a great feeling to be welcoming guests back, with the village buzzing with excitement. Both resorts’ lift tickets can only be purchased on line - check the Falls Creek and Hotham websites for more information. PHOTO: Vail Resorts Australia

doing so as a result of experiencing family violence. “Access to housing right across the region is scarce, and our staff spend significant time trying to find appropriate and affordable accommodation for women and children seeking support to leave abusive relationships,” she said. “Private rental opportunities are drastically limited

- the availability of affordable housing is the main roadblock to women leaving family violence - and when they do leave, they are leaving into homelessness. “Family violence and the lack of affordable housing have been at crisis point for some time across regional Victoria - and the pressure on the sector increases every day.”

According to Ms Nelson, BeyondHousing’s Wangaratta office saw a 14.3 per cent increase in the number of households seeking assistance to find or sustain private rental housing in the 2020/21 financial year. Up to 56 per cent of households supported by the scheme had never needed support before. ■ Continued page 3
