VOLUNTEERS STILL IN HQ LIMBO BUILDING A STRONG FUTURE ALPINE Truss has been a big part of Wangaratta’s growth over the past two decades. The company is celebrating its 20 year anniversary, and its growth from a handful of employees to a 130-strong workforce today, with ongoing expansion, is something managing director George Prothero (pictured) is understandably proud of.

O&K: A BATTLE OF THE BEST

“From day one we have tried to support local business as much as we possibly can and the local businesses continue to go out of their way to support us and our employees,” Mr Prothero said. “We have plans to continue to grow to meet our customers demands although the biggest issue

that continues to hinder the growth of Alpine Truss is the lack of employable people within our community, and of course the issue with rental properties limits the possibility of potential employees moving from other areas to Wangaratta.” ■ A 12 page lift out can be found in today’s edition to mark the milestone.

$3.8m CBD promise MAJOR Wangaratta CBD street works costing $11.75 million will be partly funded by the Federal Government if the Coalition is re-elected at the May 21 election. The Coalition yesterday committed $3.8m for the first two stages of works - taking in Ovens and Ford streets - which will “revitalise and activate” the area, following the theme of already completed works at the northern end of Ovens Street, near King George V Gardens. A priority of the works will be to provide greater access to pedestrians, address some of the vehicular speed issues

and provide more pedestrian priority crossings in the CBD. Liberal candidate for Indi Ross Lyman, alongside Nationals candidate Liz Fisher, revealed the plan to fund two of six stages of works which would begin with the revitalisation of Ovens and Ford streets in Wangaratta. Mr Lyman said the works are designed to invest in the

infrastructure that Wangaratta needs to get trade and tourism into the city. “This investment will enhance the safety, connection and amenity of the Wangaratta CBD,” Mr Lyman said. “Improving the movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists throughout the CBD will encourage more people, more often into the Wangaratta CBD. “As we return to normal post COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, we want to see locals and tourists in the CBD,

spending money and growing the local economy. “This redevelopment and activation will increase business confidence to invest in Wangaratta, and will encourage more visitors to the region, boosting local businesses and tourism.” Ms Fisher said the plan will give people a sense of place which gives people such positive feelings. “It will really provide linkages between the works that have already been done and I’m looking forward to Ross or I being elected and

seeing this project come to fruition,” she said. Council acting chief executive officer Marcus Goonan said they are not looking to remove any parking in Ford Street, but they will be looking to connect the area to the arts and culture theme that already exists in Ovens and Docker streets. The works on Ovens Street will cost $1.5m, Ford Street $1.65m, with future works costing $7.95m on Reid, Murphy, and Faithfull streets and Victoria Parade to be

funded by council under its long-term financial plan. Part of stages 3-6 will involve a pedestrian priority crossing on Reid Street, near Molonys Arcade, but also the activation of laneways, another aspect in Wangaratta’s CBD Masterplan. “If you look at what we’ve done with Molonys Arcade, most people are seeing it as a positive as having another place to just sit, eat and talk during their busy work day and out the front of Big W there is scope to do some more work as well,” Mr Goonan said. ■ Continued page 2
