Not guilty verdict JURORS have found Zachary Johnson not guilty of murdering fellow teenager Jaxen Henderson-Gillespie in Wangaratta, and cleared him of a lesser charge of manslaughter. Mr Johnson, now 20, had been charged with murder following the stabbing death of Mr Henderson-Gillespie at Vincent Road’s Scout Park on the evening of August 21, 2021, after he fatally struck the deceased in the neck with a knife.
The stabbing severed the deceased’s carotid artery and jugular vein, and he was unable to be revived by emergency service crews at the scene. The court had previously heard Mr Johnson had intended to meet with a third man at the park in order to
obtain drugs, and had completed the transaction when he was allegedly punched from behind by Mr Henderson-Gillespie. Crown prosecutor Mark Gibson KC had argued Mr Johnson had acted with intent to cause serious injury or death to the accused,
while defence counsel Daniel Sala had contended his client had acted in self-defence, and had attempted to stab the deceased in the shoulder in an effort to ward off the attack. He told jurors the alleged attack had been set up by the third man, in order to
