SOAKING UP THE SUNSHINE STUDENTS from Wangaratta District Specialist School were happily enjoying the mild autumnal weather at Merriwa Park yesterday. Townhouses refused FIVE double-storey townhouses at the entrance to Fairway Drive at the northern end of the new golf course estate in Waldara have been rejected by Wangaratta council. There were 14 objections received by council with concern from residents about traffic, parking, a lack of proper consultation, and the development being out of local neighbourhood character.

The majority of councillors chose to vote in favour of a motion to refuse the permit despite council officers recommending that it be approved. Plans show that the

double-storey units consist of four three-bedroom and one four-bedroom dwellings, all complete with a double garage each. Property owner in the estate, Michael Ressom, expressed his concern about the scale of the building at council’s March ordinary meeting. “Council’s report says that the key difference of

the development compared to others is the scale of the building and that is what we’re concerned about, five units back to back, one giant building that looks like a motel,” Mr Ressom said. He was also worried about the close proximity of two visitor car parks to the development located right near the estate’s roundabout.

Next door neighbour to the proposed development, Lionel Allpress, pointed out that the development was completely out of character for the estate. “We all purchased in there as it was a golf course estate with a little bit more land,” Mr Allpress said. “This proposed development is going to completely block my view of

the Warbys or anything else out there. “The design of the building, as you would have all seen, is very obnoxious and it’s a bit of an eyesore to the entrance of the estate.” Resident, Kevin Mounty, also commented on the lack of parking for visitors to the townhouses at the estate. ■ Continued page 2
