‘Sober’ talks on council budget THE Rural City of Wangaratta has been given a green light by the State Government to raise its rate revenue by up to 3.5 per cent in the 2023/24 financial year. Minister for Local Government, Melissa Horne, announced the 3.5 per cent cap for all Victorian councils last week. But whether or not the rural city council imposes the maximum rise is yet to be decided. A draft budget is still in the early stages, with councillor consultation not expected to begin until late January to early February. Acting Mayor Harry Bussell told the Wangaratta Chronicle that “my personal belief is do we really need it...can people cope with the extra increase?” Cr Bussell said he wasn’t surprised to see the rate cap lifted to 3.5 per cent

because “it (cap) and inflation go hand in hand”, but he was disappointed it has reached this level. And he said council will need to have some “sobering conversations” around its budget. “Over the last six years we’ve seen an enormous amount of building with huge capital works programs, but at what point is this no longer sustainable,” he questioned. “Our council strongly advocates to state and federal governments and we’ve a favourable record of gaining funding support because we deliver. ■ Continued page 3
