BIG BAND JAZZ HIGH Society Jazz Orchestra including Doug McGregor, Rob Humphrey and David Ashfield, are looking forward to performing at The Vine Hotel in North Wangaratta on Saturday night. It will be the third performance by local jazz bands at The Vine, warming up locals for the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues at the beginning of November.  Story in What’s On page 12.

MOVING INDOORS THIS year’s Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues will operate without an outdoor stage, after a fallen tree in Merriwa Park sparked a reshuffle of event venues. The park was closed to the public on Friday after the large tree fell close to the pond on the Ely Street side of the park, and was re-opened in the late afternoon. While the Rural City of Wangaratta has since deemed the park safe for public use, jazz festival

representative Dave Fuller said organisers felt on hearing about the fallen tree that they needed to pursue alternative plans. “Following the activated flood watch and the cancellation of Borderline Festival due in Wodonga

this weekend, the board and artistic directors began exploring the wet weather contingency plan,” he said. “We did a site walk, and the water underfoot, in conjunction with predicted heavy rainfall, concluded it was likely too wet to activate the park as a venue to ensure public safety. “Mid-way through negotiations with potential alternative venues, we looked to increase usage of

indoor spaces, in particular our partner venues, the RSL, Vine Hotel, Bulls Head, Milawa Cheese Factory and Holy Trinity Cathedral. “We are very fortunate to have a number of local businesses coming on board in 2022 to host performances. It’s a great opportunity to spread people not only around businesses and the CBD, but also to encourage them to explore the region.”

Merriwa Park was to have been used throughout the festival, including to host the popular blues stage, and a community stage on the Sunday of the event, but Mr Fuller said the program had been altered to cater for the change of plans. “We’ve switched the blues venue to the Wangaratta High School performing arts centre; the school has generously supported us in moving to there, and it will

act as a new venue,” he said. “There will be a new ticket available for Wang High Blues on the Saturday afternoon and evening. “We will activate the space with outdoor vendors and seating and create a reduced scope of what should have been the park space, but with the use of terrific indoor facilities from the school, and this will ensure a safer delivery of the program for Friday night and Saturday.” ■ Continued page 2
