litre cut in fuel tax set to expire on September 28.

But it’s not just wholesale price that’s determining prices, with market competition between

service stations in certain towns a factor that’s considered by retailers.

This phenomenon is called the “petrol price discount cycle” and it describes the tendency for service stations to voluntarily discount their fuel in order to attract customers away from the competition.

On Wednesday Unleaded91 in Wangaratta was cheapest at APCO ($1.85.9 per litre) with Shell and Woolworths offering it at $1.89.9, with Greta Road’s Ampol at $1.89.9 and BP at $1.95.9.

But if you were looking to source a cheaper deal, two service stations in Benalla on the Midland Highway were offering Unleaded91

for $1.63.9 per litre, while you could get the same product at $1.67.9 on the Baddaginnie exit from town.

If you were driving through Wodonga you could get a better deal with Woolworths Ampol on High Street selling for $1.55.5 per litre, two service stations on Moorefield Park Drive were at $1.55.5, while United on

Melrose Drive was at $1.59.9.

In both Benalla and Wodonga some of the cheaper petrol stations also offer the E10 (10 per cent Ethanol) product to give motorists even greater savings at the bowser.

But why do prices fluctuate between service stations within a town and compared to other nearby regional cities?

MAV calls for Fair Go Rates rethink

THE lobby group for Victoria’s 79 councils is asking the State Government to revisit the Fair Go Rates cap of 1.75 per cent as it’s currently less than a third the proportion of the 6.1 per cent inflation rate announced last week.

Municipal Association of Victoria (MA) president Cr David Clark said the current rate cap mechanism is illdesigned to provide capacity for future rises to catch up amounts lost through the current rises in CPI. He said in both the 202122 and 2022-23 year the rate cap has fallen well short of actual CPI figures and hence the costs flowing through to

councils’ operations.

But homeowners with hefty mortgages are feeling the pinch, with the Reserve Bank of Australia again raising the cash rate by 0.5 per cent on Wednesday.

This has further put pressure on household budgets and the ability to pay for other extra costs such as municipal rates, energy bills, fuel and groceries.

MAV continues to call for the State Government to objectively review the rate cap and its implications.

It wants the government to do this with the clear goal to restore financial independence for local governments across the state, in order to deliver on local community needs and aspirations.

Get set for Everton talent quest LOCAL entertainers interested in strutting their stuff on the stage are invited to take part in the Everton‘s Got Talent event taking place at the Everton Hall on August 19.

An initiative of Everton Primary School, the event welcomes those in the community who perhaps have a hidden talent they might like to share with others.

Budding singers, dancers and variety acts have already registered their interest and coordinator Linda Newton said there are still some places available for those wanting to have a go.

“We wanted to hold an event that would bring the community together and also show what the school has to offer,” she said.

“We’ve been lucky to have the support of local businesses and there will be a lucky door prize, prizes to be won for the performers and a silent action on the night.”

Entry is $5 and all those who attend on the night can enjoy a supper prepared by children as part of their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program, with funds raised supporting the program.

Judges will announce the prize winners on the night in categories for both children and adult performers.

PURSE STRINGS TIGHTEN: Homeowners on a variable interest rate are starting to feel the heat with the cash rate again rising by 0.5 per cent this week.

“With increasing cost of living pressures, councils are conscious of their role to minimise financial imposts on families and businesses, while continuing to deliver quality services and infra-

structure for local communities,” Cr Clark said.

“But, just like Victorian households and businesses, our councils are exposed to the financial pressures created by rising inflation.

“Councils are having to make hard decisions around specific capital works, prioritising some projects over others and redirecting capital to deal with cost escalations.

“Within operating budgets, they are making difficult choices to minimise the cashflow impacts of the current inflationary pressures.”

Cr Clark said while the intent of the rate cap legislation is clear to not disadvantage the operational spending of councils, the structure of how this is applies is clearly failing to deliver this steady state of operational funding.

He said with multiple cost pressures in mind, local government is working hard to meet community expectations.

“Every council in the state has completed deliberative engagements with their 79 diverse communities and not one community has asked their council to do less, despite each year having less funds to work with,” he said.

Rural City of Wangaratta chief executive officer Brendan McGrath last week acknowledged how much the cost of living is impacting the local community and that personal circumstances may affect people’s ability to pay rates and charges.

“Wodonga’s range in pricing is between $1.55.5 and $1.99.9 for an average of $175.5 and they are always going to have lower price average due to higher volume of turnover than Wangaratta and Benalla,” he said.

“Wangaratta’s range was between $1.85.9 and $1.95.9 for an average of $1.89.9, compared to Benalla’s range of $1.63.9 and $1.99.9 for an average of $1.84.9.”

A couple of independents, United and Liberty, in Benalla were offering discounted prices as it’s a key marketing tool to compete with the larger branded companies.

Mr McKenzie said with a service station 80 per cent of revenue is from fuel but 60 per cent of profit can be from non-fuel products, so businesses look to get more customers by lowering the fuel price, resulting in a

higher profit with the sale of non-fuel products.

“Independent service stations that don’t have a branding agreement with a renowned oil refinery company usually have a marketing proposition to customers that is generally built around price,” he said.

“That means that their mechanism to compete is to consistently drag the price of fuel down.

“It’s these businesses, if there are significant numbers in the market, which drive the price cycle.”

Some 85 per cent of the price consumers pay at the bowser is not related to retail, and it’s estimated that 15 cents is the wholesale cost covering transport to the service station, and then the retail cost.

Mr McKenzie said it’s not all profit and just like any other business a service station has rent, wages, and electricity costs to cover.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recognises the profit for a service station is between two cents and 2.2 cents per litre.

Hail, lightning buffer city, causing damage to homes

THE North East copped the brunt of a storm cell which brought dramatic lightning and golf ball-sized hailstones early yesterday morning.

Trees fell and buildings suffered minor damage throughout the region, with Wangaratta SES crews the busiest in the North East, called to nine requests for assistance through to 2pm yesterday.

Water covered parts of Greta Road, while residents awoke to hail stones on cars and in gutters, as Wangaratta Aerodrome’s Automatic Weather Station (AWS) recorded 7.8mm of rain during a 50 minute downpour in the early hours, and a total of 9.4mm to 9am yesterday.

Wangaratta SES Unit controller Jess Zuber said some local residents had also experienced sporadic power outages overnight.

“We’re predominantly seeing building damage caused by hail and lightning,” she said.

“We’ve seen a few houses with a loss of power and water coming through ceilings.

“It’s important residents keep up to date with the most current warnings and check VicTraffic before driving because we know we’ll have road closures.”

Both the Ovens and King rivers were placed on flood watch late Wednesday afternoon, with minor flooding occurring at the King’s Docker Road Bridge mid-morning yesterday.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast severe weather would continue throughout the region yesterday evening, with a powerful cold front expected to deliver localised totals of up to 60mm, which they warned could bring moderate to major flooding to the Wangaratta area as a result of alpine snow melt.

Up to 20mm of rain is expected to fall on Wangaratta over the next three days, with weather forecast to clear early next week.

Amendment ensures regions considered in climate policy WA NG A R AT TA- b a s e d Indi Independent MP Helen Haines has successfully amended the government’s Climate Change Bill, ensuring regional Australia is explicitly considered in future government climate policy.

The government’s Climate Change Bill passed the House of Representatives yesterday after being amended by Dr Haines and other members of the crossbench, with a vote of 89 to 56.

The Climate Change Bill, if it passes through the Senate, likely next month, will legislate a target to cut greenhouse emissions by 43 per cent by 2030.

“This is a victory for regional Australia and its impact will be felt for decades

to come,” Dr Haines said.

“These changes mean the Climate Change Authority will be required to ensure that any measures to respond to climate change will boost economic, employment and social benefits in regional and rural Australia.

“The regions will be explicitly considered when setting new emissions reduction targets and the minister must address the economic, employment and social benefits to regional Australia in the annual statement on emissions reductions.”

Expertise in regional development will also be an eligible qualification for appointments to the Climate Change Authority.

“These measures will put

regional Australia in the drivers’ seat,” Dr Haines said.

“They will hold this government and future governments accountable to regional Australia and make sure we experience the benefits we know are possible from action on climate change.”

Despite being in isolation after testing positive to COVID-19, Dr Haines worked successfully with the government and members of the crossbench to move the amendments, particularly with Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie who moved the amendments drafted by Dr Haines.

“I am grateful to the Member for Mayo for moving the amendments on my behalf and to the govern-

ment for agreeing to them in the good faith with which they were put forward,” Dr Haines said.

“I am disappointed members of the Coalition who purport to represent regional Australia did not support my amendments.

“By voting against these amendments, the Coalition voted against jobs and investment in the regions, and put party politics above their own communities’ interests.

“Regional Australians are not stuck in the last century but the Nationals are.

“As an Independent, I didn’t follow a party line dictated by dinosaurs, I worked constructively with the government of the day to improve legislation.

“Once again regional

Australians have only been represented in the parliament by having Independents there arguing for sensible policy.

“The Coalition needs to do better.

“This is what I promised the people of Indi I would do, and what I will continue to do throughout the life of this parliament.

“This is not the end on action on climate change.

There is still so much more to do.

“And I will work every day to make sure regional Australia becomes the renewable economy powerhouse I know it can be.”

The bill is likely to receive the backing it requires from the minor party of the house and a crossbench Senator.

Local film festival shares wider perspectives

By SIMONE KERWIN WANGARATTA’S Tracey McGeehan is looking forward not only to her big screen debut, but the chance to showcase Deaf and hardof-hearing storytellers, during a film festival to be held in the rural city this month.

Tracey, a Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) employee, features in ‘Amplify This’, one of four short films focusing on lived experiences which will be presented on August 17, as part of Soundfair’s Unheard Stories Film Festival at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre.

In her role as a disability support officer at NHW, Tracey supports staff who identify as having a disability, and also assists colleagues who have patients with a disability.

“During the beginning of COVID in 2020, I was actively seeking online connections with people with hearing impairments in similar situations, especially in regard to how I was feeling with the use of masks taking away lip-reading power,” Tracey said.

“Soundfair fit the bill well.

“I saw on their website that there was a film project looking for people with lived experiences of hearing conditions.

“I instantly thought it would be beneficial for me to be a part of.”

Soundfair is a not-for-profit organisation committed to hearing equality, and all proceeds from ticket sales for the August 17 film festival will support its future work.

Tracey encouraged locals interested in growing their understanding of Deafness to attend the film festival.

“These are great films, and include a winner at the Cannes Film Festival 2021 (We Hear You),” Tracey said.

“That is one of the reasons to come along, as it demonstrates the effectiveness of sto-

rytelling as an educational tool for disability awareness.

“However, it is not the only reason; even if you do not necessarily have contact with people with hearing conditions, the films will give you a taste and appreciation for how people with the same disability can have very different lives and identities, as well as learning about different communication methods.

“I hope each person is inspired to think of how people can communicate differently and celebrate this, and how this can open up worlds of opportunities.

“Sharing lived experiences

is powerful; it is heartfelt, raw, and usually works in helping people to remember what they just saw.”

There will also be an opportunity to direct questions related to the theme to a panel of three speakers.

Unheard Stories, which will run at the WPACC from 4pm on August 17, is sponsored by NHW, Hearing Australia and Northeast Earcare.

An Auslan interpreter will be available on the night, films will have closed captions, and the building is accessible.

Annual community survey reflects largely positive sentiment towards rural city council services

By RYAN MALCOLM B A COMMUNITY survey detailing the concerns and sentiment of 400 local ratepayers has largely lauded the work of Rural City of Wangaratta staff members, with the council ranking highly in 16 out of 18 performance indexes.

Following an increase in performance ranking last year largely due to COVID-19 concerns, the most recent Victorian Community Satisfaction Survey (VCSS) saw rural city performance regress to the mean but outperform the regional centre average (59) in almost 90 per cent of performance indicators.

Its overall performance ranking of 64 was the rural city’s equal second-highest since 2012, with residents aged 65 years and over (index score of 69) and rural area residents (index score of 59) reflecting the spectrum of overall satisfaction.

Speaking at last week’s monthly council meeting, council director corporate and leisure Sarah Brindley said the survey had engaged with 400 ratepayers ran-

domly with data d l via i ttelephone, l h ith d t providing benchmarking and valuable insight into community perceptions.

“Waste management, business, community development, tourism, art centres and libraries and community consultation and engagement are all perceived as relatively very strong compared to other councils,” she said.

“Sixteen of the 18 measures are on par or better than average for our regional counterpart councils and the state average of councils so it’s been a very positive performance for the council this year.

“We’ve seen a bit of levelling out of the results this year but we’re happy to report that the ongoing positive trend that council has been seeing with the community since 2014 and 2015 has still been maintained and continues.”

Council’s art centres and libraries received the highest satisfaction rate (77) for the sixth year in a row, while maintenance of unsealed roads (45) fell seven points to represent a record low, however, continued to exceed the state average of 41.

Appearance off public A bli areas fell four points (74), with recommendations tabled to council to address an issue which the report detailed “has a moderate to strong influence on perceptions of overall performance”.

Councilor Jack Herry seconded the motion brought forward by Cr Ashlee Fitzpatrick to take on board the results of the survey.

“It is a valuable source of information but it definitely is just one form of input that goes into what determines all of our focus areas,” he said.

“It’s interesting to note the performance on unsealed roads took a bit of a dive and is sitting at a low point - I guess that is curious given we have a significant spend on the unsealed roads and when some of the asset condition assessments have been performed they’re in pretty good nick according to those assessments.

“I guess it just demonstrates that no one’s ever happy with a dirt road at the end of the day.”

A WANGARATTA woman alleged to have stolen more than $77,000 while employed by a local National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider is set to fight the charges.

Appearing at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court yesterday, the defendant contested allegations she gained an advantage by deception, when her weekly pay was more than doubled through eight separate salary increases between June 2020 and May last year.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Heath Dosser detailed how the accused’s weekly salary had risen to more than $91 an hour, while allegedly employed as an operations manager for a rural city care provider for elderly individuals and those living with disability.

Sgt Dosser alleged the accused had been the recipient of a pay rise to $45 per hour in April 2020 which had been green-lit by the business owner and victim, before going on to regularly change her own pay rate in increments of between $2 and $12 per hour which ultimately saw her weekly salary rise to $1770 more than agreed.

The court heard the accused was fired in August last year, before denying she had clearance to access salary awards before February 2021 during a police interview last November.

The funds are yet to be recovered.

Defence counsel Jamie Singh said his client contended she had been given authorisation to receive the pay increase, and said defence were not opposing the dates of the payment.

Magistrate Peter Dunn acknowledged the matter would require a two day hearing early next year.

“It seems one person says one thing and your client says another,” he told Mr Singh.

Mr Singh outlined three witnesses would be called by the defence, a number matched by the prosecution.

The matter will return for a special mention on December 19.

Private hospital cover stand-off is continuing Negotiations g fail between Bupa p and Ramsayy Health Care

By SHANE DOUTHIE HEALTH insurance company Bupa has reassured its members they remain fully covered and can continue to access a no gap experience on admission to Ramsay Health Care hospitals until at least October 1 despite Ramsay ending its current contract with Bupa on August 2.

According to a statement on the Bupa website, there are no immediate changes to the coverage for Bupa members and they remain fully covered at Ramsay hospitals, including Wangaratta and Shepparton private hospitals.

Some treatments, including maternity and oncology, and any treatments already commenced are covered up to August 2023 according to Bupa.

At the same time Ramsay Health Care sent out a media release on Wednesday morning urging Bupa members in North East Victoria to review their health cover if they want to avoid additional out-ofpocket costs at Ramsay Health Care hospitals.

The Ramsay release said the health care provider and Bupa have been unable to reach agreement on key elements of a new contract, including the indexation rate which enables private hospitals to cover

Wangaratta and Shepparton private hospitals chief executive officer, Rhys Jones, said it was disappointing but necessary after Bupa offered Ramsay a rate of indexation significantly below inflation.

“Hospitals have faced enormous challenges through COVID protecting our patients and staff, providing appropriate PPE, increasing our cleaning, and ensuring additional infection prevention training for our staff and doctors,” Mr Jones said.

“This increase in vigilance and ensuring patient safety comes at a significant cost.

“Since Bupa’s indexation rate will not cover the cost of care for its members in Ramsay hospitals, additional out-of-pocket costs will soon apply to Bupa-insured patients.

“We’re committed to continuing to provide quality care for our patients, including the ageing communities here in the North East, but this isn’t possible without appropriate agreements in place with health insurers.

“Ramsay has agreements with all other private health funds in Australia, where this additional out of pocket cost won’t apply.”

By law, consumers changing funds won’t have to re-serve the waiting periods for hospital benefits again if retaining the same level of hospital cover.

“We want our members to know that our first priority in our negotiations with Ramsay has been to keep healthcare costs affordable especially when cost of living pressures continue to impact families.”

Driver dodged pandemic orders A LONG-HAUL truck driver deemed to have illegally entered the North East while state borders were closed last year will be required to pay fines exceeding $3000.

The driver, who hails from Queensland, had been driving along the Hume Freeway when he parked at the Mokoan rest stop near Glenrowan around 6pm on September 16, with Wangaratta Highway Patrol members proceeding to undertake a routine inspection of the defendant’s documents.

Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court heard this week that the defendant, who pleaded guilty to a freight movement related charge, had received an infringement notice of $5452 from intercepting police, after failing to present an appropriate permit to enter the state.

The accused told police he had entered Victoria a number of times during pandemic-related border closures, but police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Les Hare said at no point was the accused able to present a relevant permit for any of his journeys.

Defence counsel Dominic Robinson said repeated changes to the permit system for freight drivers had led to similar charges being withdrawn by police throughout the state.

However, Magistrate Peter Dunn said the defendant’s breach of pandemic regulations was “not an issue for an insignificant penalty”.

“These rules were put in place for very good reasons of sound public policy,” he said.

“Truck drivers had the privilege of travelling between states to maintain the supply chain.”

Magistrate Dunn chose to spare the driver a conviction, instead imposing a fine of $3500.

Tax hike hits the bar

THE largest beer tax rise in 30 years has been added to a growing list of cost-of-living increases in 2022, with local businesses among those forced to pass on the hike to customers.

“We obviously juggle CPI regularly, and always make decisions about whether it will be passed on to customers over the bar,” Shayne Gannon, owner of Greta Road’s Old Town ‘n’ Country Tavern, said.

“We try to hold off where we can, but this is not a CPI we can wear internally this time.

“Tap beer prices are the big one; I don’t think there would be many places that wouldn’t be putting their prices up.”

Brewers Association of Australia chief executive officer John Preston expressed disappointment this week in the rise, which Ms Gannon said equated to 20 cents across the bar on the price of a pot of beer.

“When you’ve got regulars who carry a certain amount of money and put that on the bar, you can sometimes see a backlash, but with costs increasing everywhere at the moment, I think people are a lot more understanding,” she said.

“They have been pretty good, and we do cut a bit of slack initially for those who have the correct change, and tell them about the increase for next time.

“People seem to be aware of the rise, as there is so much talk about it in the media at the moment.

“It will be interesting to see, long-term, how patrons respond.”

PHOTO: Kurt Hickling Ms Gannon said the tax hike, which kicked in on Monday, had seen the price of a pot of midstrength beer across the bar at the Old Town ‘n’ Country rise from $5 to $5.20, and a pot of heavy from $5.30 to $5.50, while a schooner of heavy was now $7.60, and a pint of heavy $11.50.

She said when there were increases in tap beer, the business often saw growth in its bottle shop sales.

However, she said the tax increase would also filter to these products, with an expected rise of up to $2 per case for most box beer, and $3 to $4 per case for craft and specialty beers due to the hike.

In a business which also offers dining, Ms Gannon said rising costs at the moment were a constant consideration.

“The idea that you can go to a pub and have a meal and have a few drinks more than once a week is becoming less affordable for most people,” she said.

Mr Preston said Australians were taxed on beer more than almost any other nation.

“We have seen almost 20 increases in Australia’s beer tax over the past decade alone,” he said.

“Brewers and pub and club operators were extremely disappointed the former government did not deliver on a proposed reduction in beer tax at

this year’s March budget.”

He said as well as pub patrons facing the rising costs, for small pubs, clubs and venues, the latest tax hike meant an increase of more than $2700 a year in their tax bill, at a time when they were still struggling to deal with the ongoing effects of the pandemic.

“We believe there is a strong case for beer tax relief to be provided by the new Federal Government - with the hidden beer tax to go up again in February, 2023,” he said.

Ms Gannon said it would be “astronomical if we keep seeing these kinds of rises”.

“The Australian culture of having a beer in the pub will change dramatically,” she said.

Friends and family arrived to surprise the centenarian, whose actual birthday was Sunday, July 31, with a decadent afternoon tea, a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday and a delicious cake, which Glenore was eager to cut into.

Glenore has been a resident of Rangeview since 2018 and is the second oldest resident at the facility after Unice Bullied who will turn 105 next month.

Over 500,000 get free flu jab MANY hundreds of Rural City of Wangaratta residents are among more than half a million Victorians who have so far received a free influenza vaccine to protect themselves and their loved ones this flu season.

Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas said the Victorians have received a vaccine from more than 2150 GPs and pharmacies that have participated in the State Government’s $33 million free flu vaccine program between June 1 and July 10 this year.

While flu rates in the Victorian community have declined from their peak in June, it remains a risk this winter and it is never too late to receive a flu vaccine.

Education key for proposed paid domestic violence leave bill

By RYAN MALCOLM VICTIMS of violent relationships could soon be given financial support to escape a hostile home environment, under a new scheme introduced by Labor MP Tony Burke last week.

Legislation was last week introduced into federal parliament which would see victims of family violence granted up to 10 days of paid domestic violence leave from work, in order to improve access to vital support systems only available during business hours.

The scheme would also allow those under full-time and casual employment to attend important housing and legal appointments, without jeopardising their employment or worrying about a loss of income.

Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) president Michele O’Neil said it costs $18,000 on average to escape a violent relationship.

However, despite labelling the initiative a “positive step” for victims of domestic violence, chief executive officer of Wangaratta’s Centre Against Violence, Jaime Chubb, said the legislation would need to be refined to be able to provide appropriate ongoing support for victims.

“In that time, not even my closes friends or family members knew what was happening behind closed doors,” they said.

“For me, I felt shame in admitting to my employer that I needed help - I was thankful that my organisation at the time fully embraced and supported me.”

Ms Chubb said further education for employers would need to accompany a change in legislation, particularly in rural communities where family violence offenders may be well known.

APPROXIMATELY 70,000 children aged six months to five– years–old are set to gain access to coronavirus vaccinations as early as next month.

The Federal Government this week confirmed children at higher risk of developing severe illness from COVID–19 would be able to access vaccinations from September 5, with 500,000 doses currently en route to Australia to be distributed to select vaccination sites.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended only children who are severely immunocompromised, with complex health conditions or with disability be part of the initial rollout.

A rates rise is the last thing we need THE Municipal Association of Victoria‘s call for the State Government to “objectively review” the Fair Go Rates system (FGRS), with a goal to restore financial independence for location governments, is greatly problematic in such uncertain times.

Households are facing financial pressure, some unlike they have ever endured, and now is not the time for the State Government to consider yet another burden on those already doing it tough.

In the Rural City of Wangaratta forecast revenue from rates in 2022–23 is $38.346 million, but employee costs alone are just $10m less than this figure, at $28.913m.

Ever since the FGRS came into play council has regularly looked at how savings can be made and staffing costs are certainly one area where there have been.

Job descriptions have been redesigned with employees becoming more adaptive in their roles or duties have been amalgamated when staff leave the organisation.

The rising cost of inflation is leaving little wiggle room for any unforeseen operational expenses and services for the local community.

The cost of living is getting unmanageable for many families with groceries at all time high prices, people are unable to drive their cars because they cannot afford fuel, and rents or mortgages are already getting beyond the means of low to average income earners.

Yes, councils do need to maintain operations but this should not be at an extra expense to ratepayers in these times, but rather perhaps at the cost of the State Government.

The rate increase should be frozen until financial clarity is broadly achieved and during this time all unnecessary capital works projects should be put on hold.

Lack of supply inflates local house lots AS alarming energy, food and rental accommodation costs force consumers to make difficult survival choices, the cost of Low Density Residential Zone (LDRZ) land in Wangaratta has likely stifled future population growth in Wangaratta.

Statistically, the price of LDRZ lots in Wangaratta have inflated by a staggering 315 per cent in the past eight years.

In 2014 one acre LDRZ lots in Waldara sold for $160,000.

As of June 2022, one acre LDRZ lots in Waldara have sold for $495,000 with new listings asking a staggering $505,000.

The power of supply/demand ratios impact us all.

No wonder drastic interest rate rises are required to quell inflation.

Those saving up for a ‘Lifestyle Living‘ opportunity in Wangaratta will surely be eagerly anticipating a resolution to the 2020 Urban Enterprise Wangaratta Low Density and Rural Living Strategy that is required by the Victorian Government to provide at least 15 years of supply.

It‘s curious to understand what happened to the past decade‘s mandated supply.

The 2020 LDRZ and RRZ Strategy has documented a 30 lots per year minimum supply to address the strong demand from ‘tree changers‘ and local demand.

Seemingly, with no current solution to the provision of 450 lots in and around Wangaratta, it may be that LDRZ land prices will continue to inflate by the day.

It may be useful for current owners within the LDRZ to budget for the significant rate rises when the next council valuations reflect the ‘out of control‘ prices.

No adjustment was made by the BOM for this failure, and as a result, the rainfall that year was significantly underreported.

NEW funding opportunities for LGBTQIA+ communities announced last week have got local organisations excited for future events with bigger and better ideas already forming.

LGBTQIA+ organisations and community groups can apply for grants of up to $10,000 for the planning and delivery of events that promote queer arts and culture, celebrate the diversity in rainbow communities and raise awareness to combat discrimination.

LGBTQIA+ in the North East

(LINE) Wangaratta president Allison Winters (they/them) said volunteers were “really excited” to see the opening of the next round of funding.

“As a volunteer-led organisation, we’re buzzing with ideas for how we can potentially bring more events to the region next year,” Allison said.

“We know events specifically celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community are incredibly important, particularly in regional areas, where LGBTQIA+ people are less likely to be aware of allies and safe places and services.

“LGBTQIA+ people are dis-

proportionally represented in mental health, domestic violence and homelessness data, and we at LINE Wangaratta are committed to seeing an inclusive and safe region for our LGBTQIA+ folks, their families and allies.

Parkrun flies past seven years

PARKRUN, the community movement that gets people running and walking alongside one of Wangaratta’s most pristine natural attractions every Saturday morning, celebrated its seventh birthday recently.

The all-year-round activity has attracted from 40 to 60 people braving the cold during the winter months, as they navigate their way along the 5km Bullawah Cultural Trail circuit, all in the name of health, fitness, with a hint of socialisation.

Parkrun Wangaratta acting event director Laura Tonkin was a founding member of the local event and said people

register for the run for a variety of reasons.

“Some people use it as part of their training plan for those bigger events, there are those who come because it’s their social outing each week, others just want to get fit or lose a bit of weight and be active, and families use it as something to do together,” Ms Tonkin said.

Parkrun is a worldwide event and when it started in Wangaratta it was just beginning to gain momentum in Australia with Albury-

Wodonga and Shepparton.

Now there are events in Cobram, Yarrawonga, Bright and Mt Beauty and Ms Tonkin said the popularity is growing because people see the value in the event and the community.

Although Parkrun is a timed event, Ms Tonkin wanted to emphasise that it’s not a race and entrants can do it at their own pace whether they run or walk.

“We wait for everyone and there is no cut off, so don’t think you’re too slow - we only time it because some people like to see their improvements from week to week,” she said.

Maxwell says “pay it back”

WA N G A R AT TA - b a s e d state MP Tania Maxwell has thrown her support behind calls for the Labor Party to repay taxpayer funds found to be misused following an investigation by the state’s Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) and Ombudsman.

The Operation Watts special report initially published on July 20 uncovered a catalogue of “unethical and inappropriate behaviour” which included the hiring of unqualified employees into

taxpayer-funded roles and interference with government grants provided to community organisations.

Speaking in parliament earlier this week, Ms Maxwell expressed her disappointment in the State Government, calling on Premier Daniel Andrews to set an example for parliamentary integrity and pay back the misused money.

“On June 8, in this very place, I put forward a motion about that type of conduct as it relates to bullying and har-

assment and to examine what support and oversight was in place - at the time I reflected that parliament and its members should be exemplars of best practice,” she said.

“Reading the Operation Watts report further affirms my view that the review of the parliament as a workplace that I proposed is essential - the heads of the highest integrity bodies in our state say that Victoria is now a laggard rather than a leader in parliamentary integrity.

“I am bewildered how the

premier can say he takes full responsibility for the conduct outlined in the report and that he supports its 21 recommendations, but then says that repaying taxpayers’ money, which was clearly identified in the inquiry, is not required because it was a recommendation.”

Ms Maxwell’s motion, in response to opposition leader in the upper house David Davis’ call for Mr Andrews to repay more than $1.3 million in misappropriated funds, stated the Operation Watts report

had gone to the heart of the integrity and ethical conduct of parliamentarian, ministers and their respective staff.

“It is completely hypocritical to say that you’re going beyond the recommendations when it does not include repaying public money that was blatantly misused,” she said.

“Pay back the money - you said yourself that you need to do more than just offer words - it has to be about action.

“Be true to that statement and pay the money back.”

YOUNG people from throughout the North East, including Wangaratta, made the most of the return of the North East Health Careers Forum when it was held at Tone Road’s Wangaratta Regional Study Centre on Wednesday.

About 120 students from 10 schools in the region, including Wangaratta High School, Cathedral College Wangaratta, Galen Catholic College and Wangaratta District Specialist School,

took part in the first forum held since the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students were able to choose from more than 28 different health workshops, from general nursing and mental health to a simulation lab, and a fiveperson panel session on health pathways, including university and other tertiary providers.

They also had the chance to speak to exhibitors including the Victorian Aboriginal Child

Care Agency, The Centre, GOTAFE and apprenticeship provider Mas National to find out about careers in the health sector.

Organisers Charles Sturt University, NE Tracks Local Learning and Employment Network, Gateway Health and Northeast Health Wangaratta were pleased that 45 health care professionals, including several medical students, were able to donate their time to the event.

VULNERABLE individuals unable to access vaccinations are set to benefit from a new outreach and homebound care model orchestrated by South Wangaratta Medical Centre.

Courtesy of a COVID-19 Vaccination of Vulnerable Populations small grant from the Murray Public Health Network (PHN), the local healthcare provider will allow temporary residents, those without a medicare card and those unable to access COVID-19 and flu vaccines to do so throughout August.

A Murray PHN spokesperson said South Wangaratta Medical Centre, led by local vaccine champion Kim Ching, had been quick to reach out for financial support in order to provide vaccines for those left in the lurch following the closure of the Tone Road Vaccination Clinic in June.

“Murray PHN works closely with local health services and primary care providers to understand community needs and service gaps,” the spokesperson said.

“When the local vaccination hub recently closed, we knew that general practices and pharmacies would need to step up to fill the gaps.

“South Wangaratta Medical Centre has previously been successful in engaging communities and delivering vaccination services to people who may not have received this service otherwise.

Tip-offs lead to record year THE availability of online crime reporting has been linked to a record year for Crime Stoppers Victoria, with more than 100,000 community tip-offs across the state resulting in an average of 14 apprehensions each week.

According to Crime Stoppers data, the agency received 106,413 contacts from concerned community members throughout Victoria in 2021/22, directly resulting in 733 arrests and almost 1500 charges being laid.

The ease of access to online reporting, where tipsters can provide anonymous information in a convenient manner, was said to have played a key role in increasing community engagement.

Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith said the community’s willingness to share information had helped police seize more than $34m in criminal proceeds throughout last fiscal year.

“Thousands more people are coming forward to Crime Stoppers each year every piece of information they share with us contributes to a safer Victoria,” she said.

“The record number of contacts is a great indication of the trust people have in Crime Stoppers.

“Every time someone comes forward with information that results in an arrest or the seizure of drugs and criminal proceeds, there is a reduction in harm to the community.

“It is not just the cases you hear about on the news that matter - crimes that few people know about can matter just as much - even the smallest piece of information can help solve or prevent a crime.”

Some 2369 criminal offences were recorded in Wangaratta in the year to March, compared to Alpine (548), Indigo (675) and Strathbogie (710).

Spark Kids exhibition to open

CWA exhibition in Tallangatta

AN exhibition of artworks made by local students in the King Valley cluster who have been working in partnership with artists and the Wangaratta Art Gallery, will be officially opened today.

The goal of the Spark Kids project was to bring art into the local community, targeting bushfire impacted areas across Wangaratta and support school community connectedness and wellbeing through artmaking.

This creative learning program was delivered over a six month period and the resulting exhibition includes drawing machines, solarography prints, wind drawings, video and sculptural works.

The opening will take place today at 10.30am with the exhibition to run until September 11 in Gallery 2.

A MAJOR exhibition which draws exhibitors and supporters of the CWA from across the state will be held at the Tallangatta Memorial Hall this weekend.

The CWA 2022 State Creative Arts Exhibition includes over 1500 exhibits showcasing the skills of CWA members from across Victoria in more than 270 categories including art, crafts, knitting, embroidery, cooking and more.

Including exhibits from the CWA North Eastern Group, the event will be open today from 9am until 5pm and on Saturday from 9am until 4pm with entry $12 (children free).

Dog owner’s $3700 compo order A WANGARATTA man has escaped a conviction after failing to seek veterinary help for his Kelpie crossbreed when it suffered burn wounds which were allegedly accrued during a party at the man’s premises last year.

The defendant, who was 21 when his dog was seized by RSPCA employees last February, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide adequate medical assistance, after wounds to the dog’s left hip and right rump were identi-

fied by welfare officers.

Earlier this week, Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court heard the accused had initially refused entry to RSPCA representatives on February 12, before they ultimately returned and seized the dog the following week.

According to prosecutor Natalie Perera, the accused had acted aggressively towards RSPCA officers at his home, while a police summary detailed how the accused had subsequently visited the RSPCA’s Connell Street premises

and intimidated staff on two occasions in the ensuing days.

According to Leading Senior Constable Les Hare, the accused had been spotted alcohol-affected at 7:45am on February 23 near Connell Street, with police later called to Wangaratta RSPCA where significant damage to a colourbond fence was identified.

LSC Hare said the accused had been “emotional and distressed” about his dog during a police interview around criminal damage

charges, and blamed RSPCA for stealing his dog.

The circumstances around how the dog was injured were not disclosed in court.

Defence counsel Bess Smallwood said her client had initially noticed the injury a week before RSPCA employees attended his home, and had been prepared to consult a vet in the event of an infection to the wound.

“It’s not the case he wasn’t taking care of the wound - he was putting antiseptic cream

on each day,” she told the court.

The accused was depressed and distressed throughout, often drinking alcohol “all day, every day” according to Ms Smallwood, behaviour which had been curbed since the accused gained full-time employment late last year.

Magistrate Peter Dunn said an application by the prosecution to exclude the accused from owning dogs for a period of five years would be refused, however, admitted the accused should have tempered

his behaviour towards police and RSPCA employees.

“No one says you have to be polite but in life you tend to get more with honey than with vinegar,” he said.

Placed on a good behaviour bond without conviction, the accused will be expected to contribute $250 a month in order to pay off a $3700 compensation order, largely comprising of veterinary bills.

The court heard the accused had since surrendered the dog into the care of RSPCA.

Families can hunt for hidden creatures in Merriwa Park

The Rural City of Wangaratta recently worked with Arena Theatre Company to engage with local school students in workshops to develop the creatures, and disks where they ‘live” have been hidden within the park.

Manager of arts, culture and events, Simone Nolan, said the work was part laboratory, part performance and all imagination.

She said the Hidden Creature Gallery is an exciting interactive work for school aged children and their families.

“Sitting between the digital and the real, this work empowered young people to bring to life the places and objects around them and

give them voice,” she said.

The students were encouraged to engage with their surroundings, notice the signs, smells and sounds and create an imaginary virtual reality creature.

Local schools including Whitfield District, Carraragarmungee, Everton, St Patrick’s, Springhurst, Oxley and Wangaratta West all took part.

Once the hidden disks are scanned with the finder’s device, a virtual reality creature developed by local students will appear.

The creature also has a voice-over recorded by the students.

Flyers with a map of the hunting area can be collected from the Visitor Information Centre in Murphy Street or community members are encouraged to start searching throughout the grassed area between Christopher Robin Kindergarten and the water’s edge.

Although they are a common species, they attract the attention of any passersby - their confiding nature coupled with their sheer splendor making them somewhat of crowd favourite.

In many areas, they have become habituated to human presence, readily taking seed when offered and even becoming so tame to feed from people’s hands.

Crimson Rosellas occur throughout the coastal and mountain regions of eastern Australia, being most common in the tall moist forests and associated foothill forests of the ranges.

However, they also inhabit a variety of other habitat types such as open box-ironbark forests, riverine woodlands and nearby farmland.

Wherever they occur, be it feeding along the roadside or dashing through the forest in

noisy flocks, they are very flashy and conspicuous.

For their first 12-18 months of life, Crimson Rosellas take on a very different appearance to what they will become in their adult colouration.

Young birds are mostly dull olive green mottled with patches of red around the head, chest and belly.

As they age, they progressively moult into their striking red and blue plumage.

During the non-breeding season, it is common to see numerous young birds banding together in wandering feeding flocks, hanging out in these groups until they mature enough to form a pair bond.

Adults tend to form flocks less frequently and are much more sedentary than young birds.

Even when they do form groups outside of breeding, pairs typically remain close-knit and rarely stray apart.

Essentially seed and fruit

eaters, Crimson Rosellas are equally adept at foraging in trees and shrubs as they are on the ground.

In either situation, food is either taken freely or they hold fruit or larger seeds firmly in their left foot while breaking into it with their powerful beaks.

Eucalypt fruits and buds, wattle seeds and seeds from native grasses and herbs form the most part of their diet though they are highly adaptable and have taken advantage of many introduced plants, including pasture grasses, weeds and ornamental trees and bushes.

Throughout this region, Crimson Rosellas are best observed around places such as Bright and Myrtleford, and other areas typically to the south of Wangaratta. However, especially during autumn and winter, they do occur further north, at times even reaching the red gum forests of the Murray River and its tributaries.

In these habitats, they occur alongside the Yellow Rosella, which is actually a recognised form of the Crimson Rosella, with which they occasionally hybridise.

Gun storage laws are set to change FIREARM owners are being urged to prepare for changes to firearm storage requirements from August 30, with new legislation to be imposed on all licensed firearm owners.

From August 30, Category A and B longarms must be stored in a purpose-built steel storage receptacle that:  is of a thickness of at least 1.6mm which complies with Australian/New Zealand standard 1594:2002 (as amended from time to time);  if the receptacle weighs less than 150kg when it is empty - must be bolted to the structure of the premises where the firearm is authorised to be kept; and  is locked with a lock of sturdy construction when the firearm is stored in it.

Also from August 30, Category C and D longarms and general category handguns must be stored in a purposebuilt steel storage receptacle of the aforementioned specifications.

The new receptacles will be expected to be purposebuilt for the storage of firearms, with those licence holders currently storing their firearms in bolted

clothing lockers or hardwood receptacles encouraged to begin making plans to upgrade.

Eastern Region Division 4 Divisional Firearms Officer Leading Senior Constable Andrew Auhl said the new changes were designed to curtail further serious offending if firearms fell into the hands of thieves.

Police are anticipating high-demand for commercially made gun safes, and outlined discretion may be granted to owners who attempt to proactively upgrade their storage before August 30, as long as proof of purchase is provided.

LSC Auhl said police will be carrying out regular checks at the premises of licence holders over the coming months to ensure owners have addressed their storage compliance.

Licence holders are urged to avoid keeping firearms at vacant properties or holiday homes, which can become the target of theft, as these properties do not meet safety requirements and standards.

LSC Auhl also warned gun owners not to leave tools lying around in the vicinity of any storage receptacle but to

make sure they are locked away to prevent them being used in a theft or break-in.

He said it was important to secure the safe keys in a room separate to the room the firearms are secured to make it more difficult for firearms to be stolen.

“Offenders will often look for soft targets and take advantage by stealing firearms,” he said.

“You should also store ammunition in a separate locked container.

“Remember - if your guns are stolen due to your lack of care and attention, you may be charged with offences that carry heavy fines and you may be deemed ‘not fit and proper’ and have your licence cancelled.”

With the changes set to impact Category A and B licence holders in particular, more than 80 per cent of the total registered firearms throughout the state which are registered against these licences are expected to be subject to the new storage requirements.

According to Kristie O’Brien, GOTAFE executive director education, the flexibility required by schools to deal with pandemic restrictions and the various waves of new strains of COVID-19 and influenza, while still catering for their student and staff needs, have contributed to the increasing demand.

“It’s a real silver lining from the last couple of years which has created flexible opportunities for learning and training,” Ms O’Brien said.

“We have a strong online presence like all training providers and the pandemic accelerated that move to study from home which has benefited students and staff.

“Certain courses lend themselves to that sort of training and students and staff are appreciative of the flexibility.

“We have been challenged in some areas due to absences because of illness but there has been a stronger engagement from staff and students still connecting even if they have to isolate at home.

SILVER LINING: GOTAFE executive director education, Kristie O’Brien (centre, pictured at a GOTAFE conference last week) said lessons learned through the pandemic had given the training provider greater fleixibility in delivering their courses for students and staff.

Mt Hotham chain pain Resort turning back motorists, but safety message starting to get through

MT HOTHAM Alpine Resort staff have been turning back almost 450 motorists a week at Harrietville since the start of the snow season because drivers aren’t carrying snow chains.

As of Monday this week - around eight weeks into the snow season - resort management staff had turned around 3530 cars at the Hotham Resort Management traffic booth in Harrietville.

Anita Coia, media and stakeholder communications manager at Mt Hotham Resort Management, said more people were visiting the resort than before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Latest resort visitation figures up until Sunday, July 25 indicate there have been 94,120 visitors, which is almost 140 per cent up on the 10 year average.

Despite the high numbers of turnbacks, Ms Coia said people are getting the message, pointing to the low numbers of motorists without chains over the past few days.

According to Ms Coia, 2151 vehicles were at Mt Hotham on Saturday and only 80 were turned back,

while on Monday only one car was turned back with around 1400 vehicles at the resort.

Ms Coia urged motorists to drive to conditions and check the resort website before heading up the mountain.

“Make sure you’ve got chains, make sure they fit their vehicle, make sure you know how to fit them,” she said.

“Ideally, practice beforehand - you don’t want to be doing it for the first time in a blizzard.”

Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of Bright police said Great Alpine Road is one of the most dangerous roads in Australia during winter.

“It is really imperative that all drivers have appropriate chains in their vehicles that can be fitted when required,” he said.

“Drivers that don’t carry chains, or don’t fit them when required, cause the most angst on the road and this inaction can have dire ramifications.”

Visitation rise renews calls for mid-week trips to Falls NEAR record visitation to Falls Creek Alpine Resort has seen day tripper car parks filled to capacity over the past two weekends, forcing authorities to stop some visitors from entering the resort.

Resort visitation for the first eight weeks of the season is up 35 per cent on 2019, and a whopping 64 per cent on 10 year visitation averages.

Falls Creek Resort Management (FCRM)said prepurchased resort entry permit holders are given prioritised access during busy periods.

“As of this week, resort entry permits will not be available for purchase at the ticket box during peak periods (Saturday mornings) and the ability to purchase online will be removed when day permit sales are reaching capacity,” FCRM said this week.

“These actions will be put in place to ensure the safety of our visitors and mountain staff.”

FCRM said that guests that plan ahead and pre-purchase resort entry permits, lift tickets and lessons are being given priority.

FCRM is encouraging day trippers to consider mid-week visitation, and also for people to consider using local private transfer operators to access the mountain.

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE POREPUNKAH Bridge Holiday Park will see a further $1 million investment for upgrades and refurbishments, after regional accommodation provider, the G’day Group, announced its acquisition of the crown-leased property.

Located just off Mount Buffalo Road on the banks of the Ovens River, the

popular holiday park will be reimagined as Discovery Parks - Mount Buffalo, and adds to the company’s growing alpine footprint, which also includes properties nearby Bright and in Jindabyne NSW. G’day Group chief executive officer Grant Wilckens said the upgrade will include the construction of a games room and a second camp kitchen.

“The company aims to

leverage its significant tourism and marketing expertise to entice more visitors to discover the Porepunkah/Mount Buffalo region all year round,” he said.

“Victoria’s High Country is already one of Australia’s favourite holiday spots, but the region still has so much potential for growth as an all-season destination.

“We absolutely love the

location of the park; it has more than 400m of river frontage and is the perfect base for exploring the region’s hiking and cycling trails and provides easy access to the ski fields in winter, as well as the many other attractions the area has to offer.

THE Alpine Community Plantation (ACP) board is doing everything it can to make sure Mystic Park stays open, according to board member Ally Wilson.

Ms Wilson, representative of the Bright Chamber of Commerce, said the board is working through issues surrounding Mystic Park’s potential closure, including maintaining and funding the park.

The board met last week to discuss the park, and while Ms Wilson said there is a long list of issues, stakeholders are committed to keeping the park open.

“It’s looking promising,” she said.

ACP comprises representatives from HVP, the Alpine Shire Council, the Alpine Cycling Club, the Bright and District Chamber of Commerce and the North East Victoria Hang Gliding Club.

Last week ACP announced the potential closure of the park, citing financial pressures and increased demand for usage, predominantly for the mountain bike trails.

ACP said the cost of maintaining and operating the park through the 2023 financial year is forecast to significantly exceed generated revenue leading to the partial or complete closure of Mystic Park and associated mountain bike trails over the next few months.

Priced out of housing market “I CAN’T afford to live in a place I grew up,” said 22-yearold Jessica Dale.

Born and raised in Myrtleford, she is as local as it gets - daughter of a town butcher, she works here and in Bright.

But like many, her plans with partner Michael Moore to own a home have been stymied since buyers fled Melbourne during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing house prices to double over the past two years.

Ms Dale understands why people want to move to Myrtleford, but said it’s pushed local people out.

“It’s a gorgeous area, it’s a great lifestyle,” she said.

“People are realising this and they’re selling their houses in Melbourne for millions of dollars, so they can easily afford something

around Myrtleford, which pushes everyone that grew up in Myrtleford out, because how can we afford that?”

The insecurity of rental living only adds to the impetus to find a place of their own.

“We’re on a month to month contract - it’s been nerve racking for us,” she said.

“They only have to give us a like a month warning and then we have to be out by the next month.

“And once we’re out, it’s so hard to find anywhere else to live because everyone else is struggling to find rentals.”

“It’s so hard to find affordable housing, and even find a house in general,” she said.

According to data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV), Myrtleford’s house prices have jumped from a median price of $330,000 in mid-2020 to $660,000 in the 2022 MarchJune quarter.

Principal at Ray White Myrtleford, Sandra Dondio, said the pandemic drove

up house prices as people sought to escape Melbourne and the associated COVID-19 lockdowns between 2020 and 2021.

“Everyone wanted to get out of Melbourne,” she said.

“They were panic buying here just to get into the fresh air of the country.”

Myrtleford resident Fiona Chambers experienced the frenzy directly - she sold her Rangeview Drive ex-commission house in 2020 while COVID-19 lockdowns were hitting Melbourne.

“I had a price in mind, real estate agents suggested the higher one - I thought ‘you’ve got to be kidding’,” she said.

“In a week it sold for full price.”

This year house buyers have become more cautious amid rising interest rates, leading to a cooldown in the market across Australia, but Myrtleford real estate agents aren’t confident it will result in a significant drop in prices.

“Country real estate will probably stay reasonably

stable,” branch manager at Paull and Scollard Bernard Ivone said.

“You mightn’t see the increase that we have seen over the last 12 months, but I can’t see any reason why it will go backwards.”

Ms Dondio was less willing to give a prediction.

“Every day the market is changing,” she said.

“We suggest to all our vendors to put it on the market for a reasonable price and then see what the market is telling you.”

■ STILL APPEALING: Bold styling, practicality and competitive pricing makes the Mitsubishi ASX a popular small SUV.

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY MITSUBISHI ASX is the smallest vehicle in the company’s four-model SUV range beneath the Eclipse Cross, Outlander and Pajero Sport.

ASX (the acronym stands for Active Sports Crossover, not Australian Stock Exchange!) has been around since 2010 and competes against a host of rivals in the small SUV category including Hyundai Kona; Mazda CX-30; Kia Seltos; Subaru XV; Toyota C-HR; and the class sales leading MG ZS. Despite being largely unchanged throughout the decade ASX has been a star performer for Mitsubishi thanks to a combination of sensible design, functionality and sharp pricing.

The ASX comes with the choice of five variants: ES, MR, LS, GSR and Exceed.

The first three are powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine, while the GSR and Exceed step up to 2.4 litres.

ES comes with the choice of manual or automatic transmission, all others are auto only.

As is the case with most vehicles in its class, ASX doesn’t have an all-wheel drive option with drive going through the front wheels.

STYLING With its styling looking somewhat dated a 2019 facelift for the ASX worked wonders with a new bolder version of the Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield front end and other tweaks turning it into one of the best-looking

vehicles in its class.

The side and rear are largely unchanged except for a new bumper and taillights.

available in the MR but are standard in the LS, GSR and Exceed.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Going against the present trend towards turbocharging, both ASX engines are naturally aspirated.

The GSR and Exceed get a 2.4-litre unit with power of 123 kW and torque of 222 Nm at 4100 rpm. ES, MR and LS get a 2.0-litre powerplant with outputs of 110 kW and 197 Nm at 4200 revs.

The ES manual has five speeds, while all other models have continuously variable automatic transmission.

INFOTAINMENT All variants have an eight-inch touchscreen system in the top centre of the dashboard. It’s clear and easy to read with only minimal distraction needed to operate.

There’s also voice activation.

Bluetooth pairing is fast and intuitive and there’s smartphone mirroring through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto along with DAB digital radio where available.

The Exceed gets a ninespeaker Rockford Fosgate premium sound system as well as integrated satellite navigation.

Other models get four- or six-speaker generic audio.

There are twin USB ports at the base of the centre console and two more in the rear.

SAFETY Standard safety features across the ASX range include seven airbags; ABS brakes with emergency brake assist, brake override and electronic brakeforce distribution; emergency stop signal; forward collision mitigation; active stability control; reversing camera; and two Isofix child seat anchors.

The entry-level ES can be ordered with an ADAS package which adds lane departure warning; automatic dusk sensing headlights; blind spot warning; lane change assist; and rear cross traffic alert.

These features are not

DRIVING Access is impressively easy and it has a spacious feel for a relatively small vehicle.

Once settled in, the front seats are well-shaped, supportive and comfortable.

Rear seat legroom is pretty good for all but more than six-foot passengers who will need the usual compromise with those in front.

Five can be carried but it’s better if the three in the back are kids.

There’s good headroom in all seats, although that could be an issue with the panoramic sunroof in the top-of-the-range Exceed.

INTERIOR Inside are black cloth headlining, microsuede and leather-look seats with red stitching.

The Exceed has leather seats.

2.4-litre GSR. The engine has plenty of grunt with just a hint of torque steer if you flatten the throttle from a standing start.

It’s nicely responsive, which we like as it’s more pleasant to drive than the small displacement turbopetrol engines that are in vogue nowadays.

The drive is smooth and comfortable.

Steering has a pleasant nice feel and gives the driver good response.

It’s no sports SUV, though the engine almost puts it into that category at times.

Cornering is simple and the ASX generally follows the chosen line without you having to correct it midway through.

Road noise is generally well damped, but some stretches of Australia’s notorious coarse-chip surfaces set up a fair bit of noise in the cabin.

Fuel consumption in the GSR is listed at 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres.

During our usual mix of urban and motorway con-

ditions we averaged 8.7 L/100 km.

SUMMING UP Although it’s gone 12 years without a new model Mitsubishi ASX continues to feel as though it’s only a few years old with styling and technology updates and keen pricing letting it keep pace with its many, much younger rivals.

It’s stylish, easy to drive and will appeal to both families with preteen children and retirees alike.

Note that Mitsubishi is headlining its advertising with an industry-leading 10year warranty.

It certainly sounds attractive on the surface but less so when you check the fine print because not only is the 10-year deal dependent upon having your vehicles serviced exclusively at its dealerships, but also the distance is limited at 200,000km.

If you choose to have your servicing done elsewhere then the coverage drops down to five years and 100,000 kilometres.

Unfortunately, no play was possible on Wednesday due to rain making the courts unplayable.

Maureen O’Keefe and Terry Wilson attended the VCA season opening day at the Victorian Croquet Centre located at Cairnlea in Melbourne where the weather was fine, but very windy.

Playing days are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 1pm.

WARBY WALKERS SUNDAY, July 31 Kancoona Gap Track, Kancoona near the Kiewa Valley There are meaningful moments in history when something momentous occurs, and you know exactly where you were on that day.

For a few of us from the WRBC, it will be Sunday, July 31 and the Kancoona Gap Track walk.

What we didn’t realise was that the history being made that day was by our club walkers.

For what I believe is the first time ever, we had men outnumbering the ladies on a walk.

That’s correct, 57% of the walkers that day were men!! I have contacted the people at Guinness World Records and am eagerly awaiting their reply to hear how they rate our record-breaking achievement.

It was a bit of a bleak, cloudy day with 13 degrees forecast and predicted rain approaching.

Our incentive for the walk, was to beat the rain and allow sufficient time for the promised wine tasting at Eagle Range Estate on the way home.

Our starting point was on the edge of the plantation at Rolland Road, beginning at an elevation of 425m.

For most of us beanies were the order of the day as we began our gradual ascent.

This road bordered the edge of plantation and state forest for all this section.

A little further along at about the 4.5km point morning tea was taken.

We resumed our walk and 300 metres later we took the Kancoona Gap track.

Although by no means daunting, we were now climbing steadily to reach a height of 753m over about 1.5km.

Pat handed out the snakes by way of inducement for the next section of the walk.

It wasn’t a constant uphill trudge,

with the undulating ridge providing respite at points.

The group was walking faster than anticipated, and with about 4kms to go at the 6km mark, it was suggested that lunch could be taken.

Forest trees partially obscured the views of Happy Valley on one side and Running Creek on the other.

There were no birds to be heard in the forest, possibly the cold had killed them all?

The one lone wallaby spotted, was surely heading to a warmer place, probably beside a farmer’s bonfire.

Geoff’s beard looked like icicles would form at any minute.

About halfway along the track it descends about 70m before engaging you to rise to another peak of about 747m.

This up and down continued for about 2km, until finally, the long descent over about 1.5km to the cars.

A covered shelter and table provided us with a suitable lunch venue.

Pat’s welcoming cuppa was also consumed, warming us all up from the inside.

The 10.2km walk was completed in about 3 ¼ hours.

Congratulations to the seven walkers (57% were men).

The journey home was rewarded with a visit to Eagle Range Estate wines.

Coming events Saturday, August 13 White Box Walk, Chiltern - Mt Pilot NP Sandi, 0439 552 152 An easy loop walk of about 8k on bush tracks in the Chiltern - Mt Pilot National Park, a remnant of the BoxIronbark forest that was once more widespread in Victoria.

This walk starts and finishes at the Honeyeater Picnic Area.

The forest is noted for its birdlife, as well as its natural and historical features.

Knights Ladies triumph over Wolfpack THE Lady Knights were too strong for the unbeaten Benalla Wolfpack.

With round 15 being Ladies in League round the Knights took on the Wolfpack.

Only minutes into the game Benalla ran through the Knights defence and scored and converted to take the score to 0/6.

Both teams were defending well but it was not until the 20 minute mark that another score went on the board but is was the Knights Janine Lambert placing the ball over the line but the conversion was unsuccessful, 4/6.

As a result of a penalty, Adelaide Hamilton was determined to make the most of it and scored but again no conversion, 8/6.

For the first time this season the Knights went into half-time with a winning edge over the Wolfpack 8/6.

Devils face “bogey side”

WANGARATTA City won’t be expecting an easy task when they come up against Melrose at home on Sunday.

The purple army has been a bit of a bogey side for the Devils in recent times with coach Daniel Vasilevski suffering two losses at their hands since coaching his first season in 2019.

Wangaratta will take confidence out of their 4-1 win over their opponents in round seven though.

“We’ve got Melrose, Boomers and then a bye to end our

season so hopefully we can fix a few things in these final few games before finals,” Vasilevski said.

“Hopefully we can settle our midfield and you never know what can happen in finals.

“The next two weeks will be a tough run to finals so it’ll be a good chance for the boys to sharpen up a bit.”

Melrose suffered an exodus of outs in their 3-2 win over Albury Hotspurs last Sunday with players suffering injuries and illnesses so it’s unsure how they will look on Sunday.

After a 4-1 win against Hotspurs at the start of July, the Lady Devils have been starved of success, losing two matches

without scoring a goal, and fighting out a 1-1 draw.

With their form in a trough, and with only three matches of the regular season left to play, coach Georgia Mahoney said her side will need to lift their game.

“We’re looking to get our groove back on - I feel like this is going to be where we find our feet again after all that’s happened,” she said.

the intention we had was to be able to get a smaller scoreline than we had with them the first time, and that’s exactly what happened.

“Then we played against United and we could’ve really beat them no problem, but the thing is we had no benches, everyone was getting injured and it was all topsy-turvy, really.

“We had six girls available last week and over 17 girls not available to play so we

had to forfeit which was really annoying.

“I had to put my coach pants on and say we’re getting to the finals season so we need to start showing up to training and showing up to the games.

“Hopefully this is the cherry on top that we can have and get our confidence back in reserves.”

Despite missing several players due to injuries, including goalkeeper Beth Cope and

Melrose FC

Mahoney herself, the reserves side are overflowing with options to fill out their list.

“We’ve got Beth Cope, who is our goalie, she’s out with a sprained ankle for the next four or five weeks, so that’s putting a bit of a kink in our plans for our goalie,” Mahoney said.

“We’re looking at Estella Hernandez or Georgia Long - they’re our current (senior) keepers at the moment, they’ve been absolutely

smashing it, doing some training one-on-one with our senior men’s goalkeeper.

“I’ll be out, but we’ve got high numbers who are wanting to play this weekend, we’ve got 17 girls who are wanting to play which is really good compared to the last time we played Melrose when we were playing with no bench.”

The Lady Devils host Melrose FC at the South Wangaratta Reserve this Sunday.

Friday races moved to Monday THE Wangaratta Turf Club has been forced to move today’s races to Monday afternoon due to wet weather.

Racing Victoria stewards inspected the track on yesterday and determined it would not be suitable for racing due to surface water.

With no appropriate transfer locations due to the weather and the current racing schedule, the decision was made to postpone the meeting as the track is expected to dry out by Monday.

Oxley Table Tennis channels Commonwealth Games fever

WHILE Australia’s elite athletes were competing and winning medals at the Commonwealth Games, there were 20 players all winning gold medals in the many table tennis events contested at the Oxley Hall last Monday night.

With everyone fired up and raring to go, tables were filled quickly for singles and doubles contests between young and old, long and short and all with the same motto, ‘it matters not if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game’.

First through the turnstiles was Simon Brown, who was ‘wheelie’ on top of his game, scooping up short balls and ripping long drives from partner Brian ‘back o’ Bourke, in a thrilling contest against the driving force of Graham Stephens, and William Bonwick, who was on the ball all evening.

In the marathon contest which left players and spectators exhausted it was a great display of the three D’s, desire, determination and desperation, with both pairs voted worthy winners.

In a re-match that had been penciled in the previous week, surprise packets Margot Ingwersen and June Uebergang partnered the Poulos brothers, Manni and Theo respectively and respectfully.

While many of the shots played were out of the book, most were ‘out of this world’.

Ingwersen’s edge of the table shaves and Uebergang’s sliced serves were continually outshone by the Poulos boys’ more orthodox and deliberate strokes from go to whoa.

Scores were not recorded but it was great fun and enjoyed by all.

Zac Mullins were in fine form when they challenged teenager, Archie Crispin and the man who plans his game well, Neil Spurgeon.

With all players driven by ‘big engines’ in their nonstop race to the finish line, it was almost too dangerous for spectators to get too close to the action.

Delivering and receiving high speed shots from all angles, the whole match had it all.

So many superlatives could describe the game, but ‘bloomin good’ will suffice.

The adage ‘she’s all over the place’, aptly describes Janet Heath’s performance when she partnered her mainstay husband Don to take on ‘Johnson Street’ Jason Mullins and his near neighbour Erica Pike.

But much of this riptearing play was nullified

by Pike and Mullins, as they stood their ground and nailed many opportunities in a very even match.

It was hard to tell who won, but ‘golden handshakes’ all round indicated everyone got their moneys worth.

Concluding another enjoyable night of both physical and social interaction, everyone tucked into a ‘cuppa’ and tasty treats in what everyone agreed was a ‘gold standard’ event.

Adults and secondary schoolers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the group which meets at the Oxley hall each Monday night, beginning at 7pm.

MATCH PREVIEWS 19 Tarrawingee eager to play the rest of the season out ROUND

By NATHAN DE VRIES THEY won’t play past next weekend, but for Tarrawingee’s senior football side, the coming fortnight is a chance to play for the pride of the club.

The Bulldogs sit 10 points behind making the cut for finals and face flag favourites Benalla All Blacks tomorrow, playing at home for the last time this season.

Coach Xavier Norden said the seventh rung on the ladder wasn’t where he expected his side to end up.

“I think it’s probably reflective on the things that

we’ve had to deal with this season in regards to those long-term injuries, the unavailabilities and probably a few games we lost that we should’ve won,” he said.

“I think it sums up our season pretty well, where we’re sitting, but in regard to what we set at the start of the year, it’s by far a fair bit off the mark, unfortunately.

“As we know, you have seasons where you play really well and you surprise yourselves, and sometimes you have seasons where you don’t live up to those expectations.

“We’ve all found it a really challenging and tough year,

but we’re all on board helping each other get the most out of ourselves in our individual performance.

“Taking the game on, having our shots on goal, flying for those marks, run and carry with the footy - it’s a great opportunity to play with a bit of freedom like that.”

Despite having a rollercoaster season in terms of performances, Norden said the young blood rising through the ranks at the Kennel gives him hope for a stronger showing next year.

“The biggest improvement is definitely from a core group of younger fellas

that have had to stand up, and the great thing is, they have,” he said.

“I would think even if we got our full list back and really healthy, those young fellas would probably still be holding their positions that’s how well they’ve gone.

“I know from myself as a coach when things aren’t particularly going that well, but to be able to think ‘what are the positives to take from the season’, I think the likes of Brandon Igri, Angus Beck, Austin Amery and those sorts of lads, to see their development is just something all of the older lads are defi-

nitely proud of.”

As it’s their last home game for the home and away season, the club will gather to remember Brian Kerwin, a long-time servant of the red white and blue who passed away last year.

“Brian was a big part of our club and he passed away during the lockdowns last year, and the club felt we never had the opportunity to spend time with his family and celebrate everything he did for our club,” Norden said.

“We’re using this weekend, , as a chance for all of his family and friends to be there - it’s a chance for us to

celebrate the Kerlin family, Brian in particular, and say thank you for all the things he did for our club.

“Things like that is what community sports are about, to have someone like that who stood up and did jobs and always supported the club in a range of different roles to make the club what it is today.

“The least we can do is make sure we take the time to celebrate that and appreciate that.”

The afternoon tea remembering Brian will commence at 2pm, in line with the start of the senior match.

O&K footy season starts to wind down

By NATHAN DE VRIES FOR five senior footy teams in the senior O&K, tomorrow marks the penultimate game of their year as the competition enters round 19.

Despite the likes of Moyhu, King Valley, Whorouly, North Wangaratta and Tarrawingee unable to play past next Saturday, each side will enter the next two hit-outs with nothing to lose and pride to play for.

North Wangaratta head up the Great Alpine Road to take on the Mountain Men in Bright, and a win is not out of the question despite their disparate ladder rankings.

The Hawks have strung together three wins from their

past four matches, including against a top six side, whereas Bright were on the receiving end of two back-to-back spankings by Benalla and Milawa over the past fortnight.

Over at the Whorouly Recreation Reserve, the Lions will be looking to avenge their one point-loss to the Hoppers from round three.

With two wins from their last two starts, Whorouly’s late-season form will be a test for the struggling Hoppers, but Moyhu will enter the match with the mental advantage of history on their side.

Benalla will seek to make an example of Tarrawingee ahead of finals, with the powerhouse Panthers’ forward

unit able to kick substantial scores with even a moment’s lapse from defenders.

The match of the round is arguably the showdown between Greta and Milawa, with both sides chasing consistent form before they get stuck into finals footy.

When they last met in round one, the Demons blew Greta away by 33 points, but Milawa have shown signs of weakness throughout the year.

The final match of the round will see Bonnie Doon and Goorambat scrap it out at the Goorambat Recreation Reserve, with the Bombers eager to hold on to their top two status while the Bats will look to prove they deserve to play finals.

TWO of the best A grade squads in the O&K competition will face off for the first time since the start of the season, as Milawa and Greta go head to head in what could be a sneak peek at the grand final.

The Demons have dropped four matches so far this year, sitting in second place behind the untouchable Blues, and Milawa coach Stacey Lamb said her side was eager to put a dent in Greta’s season.

“We have been the best two teams for many years, but we have dropped some games to other teams this year so it is kind of like, who can catch Greta?” she said.

“So much has changed throughout the year and we weren’t full strength back when we played them in round one.

“It is hard to gauge any team in the first little while, let alone 18 weeks ago.

“Greta are very strong across all areas of the court as are Milawa - the match-ups are always great and the games are

always hotly contested.

“They have great players all across the court and have been playing together for so long.

“We go into the game again unfortunately not at full strength, but we will play our best and focus on the things we have been working on.”

In other matches, North Wangaratta’s A grade will play their final match of the year tomorrow, scheduled to take the bye in round 20 and sitting at ninth.

The Hawks haven’t had the most successful season, with just the four wins to their name, but they have a chance to pick up a fifth when they head up the mountain to take on Bright.

Bright sit below North Wangaratta on the ladder, with the Hawks coming out on top the last time they clashed, a 43-29 win in round two.

Elsewhere, Tarrawingee make preparations for finals against Benalla All Blacks, Goorambat host Bonnie Doon, and the Lions take on Moyhu at Whorouly.

Rangers go toe-to-toe with Warriors WANGARATTA Rangers played Wodonga Warriors in all four grades of North East Baseball at Targoora Park on Sunday with their second B Grade team playing Porepunkah Panthers.

The under 11s started well bringing in two runs in their first dig, then Warriors used the seven batter rule well when they had not lost an out when their seventh batter got on base safely with seven runs counted.

Rangers were not having much luck when they kept hitting straight to the fielders.

They got one more runs in each of their next two innings, while Warriors were picking the gaps and scoring the max to run out winning 20 runs to Rangers 10.

The under 15s match was close all game.

Although there were field errors made by both teams, this was due to the pressure put on by the good base running.

Warriors led four runs to two at the top of the last innings and they added one more in their turn at bat.

It was do or die for Rangers, their first batter got on base safely, with a two base hit.

With the help of a couple of walks and a few more errors

by Warriors in the field, they brought in three runs before they lost their third out.

Just enough to end the game in a draw five runs each.

Rangers Orange batter in 10 runs in their first turn at bat in their B Grade game against

Warriors when with six runs already across the plate, two out and bases loaded, their 12th batter hit a home run bringing in four runs.

Rangers batting was something to watch all game when they had 21 safe hits to Warriors two.

Kelsey Burder was their best with four safe hits from five at bats.

Rangers Orange won 22 runs to Warriors seven.

Rangers other B Grade team, Grey played Porepunkah Panthers.

After having their first two batters struck out, Rangers were able to rally and bring in two runs before losing their third out in the first innings.

Panthers first three batters got on base from safe

hits, but could only get one home before side away.

Panthers had only four batters face the pitcher in each of their next three innings before they lost their three outs, while Rangers Grey added another 10 runs in their turn at bat to run out winning 12 runs to two.

In the A Grade game, Rangers Black played Wodonga Warriors.

Warriors put the pressure on their opponents in their first at bat with good base running, forcing fielding errors to bring in four runs for the dig.

They then had Rangers three outs from four plate appearances.

Rangers came back hard in the second innings, after

shutting Warriors down to add just one run.

They brought in nine runs themselves with their second batter, Owen Godenzi and their fifth batter, John Taylor both hitting home runs to bring in five runs before the pressure got to the Warriors fielding.

This allowed them to add another four run before they lost their third out to hold a four run lead at the top of the third.

Warriors could not get their game together and the Rangers added another six runs over the next three innings to win 15 runs to Warriors five.

Godenzi, Ross Johnson and Bryan Wilson all had three safe hits for Rangers

Black, while Max Garoni was Warriors best with two safe hits.

Riley Corke to debut at World Championships

LOCAL mountain bike talent, Riley Corke, has been selected with 26 other riders named in the Australian team to compete at the 2022 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, in Les Gets, France, from August 24-28.

Headlining the crosscountry team is current Cross-Country Olympic (XCO) Elite Women’s world number one Rebecca McConnell and four-time Olympian Daniel McConnell.

Nine riders were selected in the elite men and women downhill, while 17 athletes were chosen to contest the XCO and short track events in junior, under 23 and elite.

One rider will be competing in E-MTB. Riley will be one of just six junior athletes making their XCO World Championships debut to gain valuable experience and exposure in the sport.

Riley began racing on the outdoor cycle track at the Wangaratta Showgrounds 14 years ago.

He was highly competitive on the track, and in road racing, and found his passion for XCO mountain bike racing for the last 10 years.

“It will be a huge honour to line up on the start grid in Les Gets wearing the Australian Cycling Team Green and Gold kit,” Riley said.

The current challenge for Riley is to complete his year 12 studies at Wangaratta High School while balancing busy training and racing commitments.

Recent recognition by the AIS, and athlete categorisation into the High Performance Network, means Riley is now receiving support from the Victorian Institute of Sport Cycling Program.

Riley acknowledges the support of his family, his coach Todd Cuthbert of ‘RideCoach’, and for the long time support of Rob Sullivan from his local Wangaratta bike shop, Rock and Road Cycles.

Tough trip awaits Magpies

WANGARATTA will make one of the tougher trips of the season when they venture up to the high country to take on Myrtleford tomorrow.

The Magpies will be short favourites to return home with a win after downing the Saints by 32 points in round six but games against Myrtleford at McNamara Reserve are never easy.

And with the weather forecast to be wet it’s set to be a great battle.

“With the way the forecast is looking it’s going to be a pretty contested game,” Wangaratta coach Ben Reid said.

“Coming off the bye I think this sort of game will be perfect for us, straight into hitting bodies and getting back to the things we do best.

“Myrtleford are coming off a strong win against Rovers too so they’ll be up and about.”

Reid believes the Saints have plenty of talent that will keep his team on their toes.

“Cal Crisp has been a really underrated ruck I reckon,” he said.

“All the games I’ve seen this season he’s been a good contributor so he’s one we’re going to have to look out for.

“And then the likes of Sam Martin and Mitch Dalbosco in the middle are playing some really good footy.

“Murray Waite up forward will also give our backs a challenge, he

seems to find space out the back so he’s a hard one to match up on.”

Myrtleford will be without ex-AFL duo Dawson Simpson and Ryan Griffen who both sit on the sidelines with injuries.

With only four games left until finals, the Magpies will be looking to build towards their best football.

“Our focus has always been on being strong in the contest and through the middle of the year we probably went away from that a bit,” Reid said.

“We’re trending back to the way we want it to be now and the next three or four weeks are going to be really important for us ahead of finals.

“We want to be playing our best in five or six weeks so building towards that form starts this weekend for us.”

Wangaratta are set to welcome back a host of players with Matt Grossman (broken arm) the only unavailability.

“It’s going to be a hard week for selection because we’ve got everyone available bar Matt Grossman,” Reid said.

“Hunter Gottschling is back available for selection and hopefully we’ll have Brad Melville again this weekend.

“Tough selection is a good thing to have.”

Golden chance for Hawks, ‘Pies face Saints

WANGARATTA Rovers netballers get the opportunity to win their second game of the season when they face the winless Wodonga tomorrow at WJ Findlay Oval.

The Hawks took bragging rights in their round six encounter against the Dogs when they ran away 28-44 winners at Martin Park.

With tough games against Corowa-Rutherglen, North Albury and Albury to follow this could be the Hawks’ final chance of grabbing another victory this season.

Meanwhile, Wangaratta are returning to the basics as

they look to gain some backend form before finals start in a month.

The Magpies face the eighth placed Myrtleford at McNamara Reserve tomorrow and will be looking for a big win.

“This week we want to focus on the basics and doing them well,” Wangaratta cocoach Chaye Crimmins said.

“We’re also looking to try a few different things on the court.

“If we can focus on those things, I think our team will get huge confidence and trust coming to the final rounds of the season and heading into finals.”

Wangaratta downed

Myrtleford by 13 goals at Norm Minns Oval in round six and will be aiming for a similar result this time around.

“It’s been a while since we played them,” Crimmins said.

“They are tough competition and I’m sure they have improved since our last game against each other.”

The Magpies have gained defender Olivia Richards for the rest of the season and she has made an immediate impact since rejoining Wangaratta three weeks ago.

Crimmins said she is excited to have a full list to select from.

“We are really excited to have Olivia Richards back as a great inclusion for the remainder of the season.

“Other than that we are excited to have everyone available.”

Crimmins believes her team will be trying new things in a bid to improve ahead of finals.

“We’ll be trying to get lots of combinations on the court so we have confidence in them,” she said.

“We’ll continue to stick to our game plans each Saturday and take it game by game, especially with some big games coming into finals.”

Rovers want payback

By WILLSON MACK PAYBACK is on the cards at WJ Findlay Oval this weekend when Wangaratta Rovers take on Wodonga.

Although the Bulldogs have only managed four wins this season, one of those was against the Hawks back in round six when they triumphed by 27 points.

The Hawks are expected to be bolstered with the huge inclusions of Sam Murray, Jake McQueen, Lukas Webb and Will Nolan which will no doubt make a difference after falling to Myrtleford before the weekend off.

“No doubt the boys will be wanting to get one back on them,” Sullivan said.

“We’re also starting to get some important players back at the right time now which is handy.”

Smout are enough to scare any team, let alone one that was already beaten by them.

“They have some really talented players that make you pay and we found that out in that first game against them,” Sullivan said.

“Redcliffe up forward is a real danger, he may only have 10 possessions but he can kick four goals so he’s one we’re going to have to keep in check.

“They’re definitely not to be underestimated which we’ve always known.”
