PEDESTRIAN APPEAL ON CROSSINGS

SPLASHING INTO OUR SUMMER NASHJUL Gradina of Wangaratta made the most of the sporadic bouts of sunshine on Saturday by cooling off at the Wangaratta Splashpark. The four-year-old wasn’t the only one seeking some refuge as the city reached a top temperature of 28.3 degrees, with people also heading to the Ovens River and Wangaratta outdoor pool for an afternoon swim. Wangaratta’s relatively mild start to summer is forecast to heat up this week, with 29 degrees expected today, followed by tops of 35 degrees, 33 degrees, 29 degrees and 33 degrees for the remainder of the week. It comes after a much drier than average spring for Wangaratta. ■ Full story page 2. PHOTO: Melissa Beattie

SPORTING HOPE The Academyy 2.0 on the cards as council looks at options p to secure funding g

Deputy Mayor Harvey Benton spoke about the idea for council to work with a provider such as GOTAFE to secure funding so the pro-

gram could be provided for local students in 2025. While the program would aim to resemble the course that students had studied since 2017, Cr Rees said there was scope to take in students with interests across different sporting codes. It would help to address a skills shortage in Wangaratta

across sports, recreation and leisure, which the councillors say currently exists. “The Academy certainly needs funding and cohesion between council and GOTAFE or another education body that can make sure we can get it going,” Cr Rees said. “There are a lot of people

that this program fits and we could even expand the program into female sport and not just Aussie rules football but other sports to help these kids further their education. “Education is one of our big goals as we want to keep people local and there are people who are not academ-

ically minded but they have a sporting background. “We have jobs in this field in the sport, recreation and leisure who we can’t find the right people for, so to be able to open this up and give them pathways into other areas, this is a perfect program.” ■ Continued page 2
