More capacity AN additional 16 acute mental health beds will bolster Northeast Health Wangaratta’s (NHW) treatment capabilities, with a complete redevelopment of the hospital’s Kerferd Clinic set to take place with funding detailed in yesterday’s state budget. Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced the funding at NHW yesterday, with

a share in $35.5m set to contribute to the planned acquisition of land and expansion of the clinic’s existing 20-bed unit. With an ongoing $22m

redevelopment of the hospital already underway, Ms Symes said the promise of a new 36-bed acute mental health unit in Wangaratta, as well as additional beds at Shepparton and Ballarat, were important steps towards expanding the capabilities of rural health precincts. “(Northeast Health Wangaratta) currently have

a facility of 16 beds, which is really not fit for purpose,” she said. “The hardworking staff do their best to provide treatment to people in need in a very outdated facility that really is in need of some modernisation. “So this planning money today to really think about the service requirements

of the region and the needs of the staff will deliver a facility that will cater for 36 people at a time. “What this will do is take pressure off our emergency departments - we know that the experience from the staff in those centres is that more and more people are presenting with mental health issues without the

options locally to provide the services required. “It’s putting pressure on areas of our health services that really will benefit from a dedicated service for not only providing appropriate treatment but making sure that other services and other parts of the hospital aren’t burdened by something that is better treated in a dedicated facility.” ■ Continued page 2
