OUR CUP OF JOY THOUSANDS of people are expected to flock to the Wangaratta Racecourse tomorrow for the Wangaratta Cup, with the race day free of any COVID restrictions. Nordic Pride (pictured) from the stables of Wangaratta trainer Ben Brisbourne will shoulder local hopes in the $100,000 Wangaratta Cup, although the Warrnambool trained Irish gelding Guizot, which has a number of local part owners, is among the cup’s dozen starters. Wangaratta’s Rebecca Prestianni was happy to show Nordic Pride what he is racing for. Further story page 7, with race fields, form guides and latest updates in SPORT. PHOTO: Kurtis Hickling

1 surgeries at Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW). The code brown was initiated to create greater

capacity in the hospital that had up to 80 staff away from work in the peak of the recent local COVID-19 outbreak. Category 1 surgeries are operations that if they are not performed within 30 days it will have a profound effect on the patient, for

example cancer surgery. Wangaratta orthopaedic surgeon Richard Kjar said they are getting back up to 30 surgeries a day after only doing Category 1 and emergency surgery during the code brown. “It has had a profound effect on the hospital’s

ability to deliver surgical services, with a lot of the major surgeries cancelled, particularly from my perspective as an orthopaedic surgeon and joint replacement surgery,” Mr Kjar said. “There is a huge need for this type of surgery in

the community, so that has been a sense of frustration for the last six weeks.” Joint replacement surgery consists of hip, knee and shoulder surgery, but there has also been some gynaecological and general surgery cancelled as well. ■ Continued page 2
