Police on high alert ahead of expected tourist influx POLICE have issued a final warning to motorists planning to drive in an unsafe manner throughout the North East this long weekend.

Police Operation Furlong, which commenced this morning and will run through to midnight on Tuesday, will see additional police resources, including a booze bus, deployed in the region to manage an expected influx in tourists cashing in on the warm weather throughout the North East.

Wangaratta Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant David Gillespie said alcohol and drug driving would be of key concern for local officers this weekend, particularly after one in every 295 drivers tested across the state during last year’s operation was over the legal alcohol limit.

He said those who elected to drink and drive in the region could face fines starting at more than $500, while those caught with a blood alcohol content of more than 0.1 could expect to see their vehicle impounded.

Snr Sgt Gillespie said relatively “small” errors, such as exceeding the speed limit by a small amount or not obeying road signs would carry an infringement notice rather than a warning, and urged drivers to limit distractions and wear their seatbelt when driving.

“The implications of drink driving in respect to the driver having to go to court and losing their vehicle, particularly in the rural areas, is quite significant because that impacts people’s ability to move

around, they lose their licence, they lose their car,” he said.

“We’ve had a number of collisions in our local area this year alone which have been quite significant where there have been incidences of occupants of the vehicle not wearing seatbelts.

“It’s the driver’s responsibility to make sure all passengers have their seatbelts on, so I ask all drivers to enforce that rule in their cars.

“We’ve tried for a long time to encourage people to do the right thing, but there’s come a time that trauma is so substantial or so significant on our roads that Victoria Police are going to give you an infringement notice.”

So far this year, 237 motorists have died on Victorian roads, a figure just shy of the 241 lives lost during the entirety of last year.

Road policing assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said those making the decision to drink and drive would face costly consequences.

“Police will have zero tolerance for drink and drug driving – these behaviours continue to contribute significantly to serious injury and fatal collisions, and we’re doing everything we can to reduce further trauma on our roads this year,” he said.

“There is a general feeling of excitement to get to the weekend and do it again, but also an underlying sadness that this is expected to be the last one,” Mr Fuller said.

The festival board announced in August that the 2023 event would be the last in its current form, citing ongoing financial constraints; a shifting and uncertain outlook for music festivals in Australia; and diminished resources for the board and its volunteer base as key reasons for the decision.

Mr Fuller reiterated

that there would be an opportunity at the festival’s annual general meeting in early 2024 for anyone interested in seeing the event continue to explore opportunities.

“It’s a blank canvas for the future - not only for the festival, but what might exist on this weekend in future,” Mr Fuller said.

“There are a few people talking about where it might go, but my focus is on the weekend ahead, and celebrating the event.”

Mr Fuller said interest had been expressed in the future of the National Jazz Awards,

which were launched in conjunction with the festival in its first year, when 2023 performer Barney McAll was the inaugural winner.

This year they focus on bass, with five finalists vying for the title on Saturday.

Before arrangements are made for the future, though, Mr Fuller said this weekend would be a chance for locals and visitors to soak up the sounds of the final festival in its current form, and to celebrate all it had offered the district.

“I’m looking forward to thanking a lot of people,” he said.

Gambling action quizzed Councillors asked whether p policyy to reduce $ $10m local ggambling g losses actuallyy does enough g COUNCIL has released a draft policy and action plan for community feedback aimed at reducing the rates of gambling among the Rural City of Wangaratta community.

It comes as in the last two financial years people have lost $19.562 million on electronic gaming machines (EGMs) across four venues in Wangaratta.

Council’s action plan shows that Wangaratta has a higher density of EGMs per 1000 adults (6.5) compared to regional Victoria (5.9) and Victoria as a whole (4.8).

It also notes that Wangaratta is currently operating at 69 per cent of its municipal cap of 223 EGMS.

At the October meeting of council this week, Wangaratta resident Jeremy Kraybill expressed concern over the tangible function of the policy and asked council what it would actually do to reduce gambling in the municipality.

He made note of the alltime high losses through use of EGMs in Wangaratta and warned that they will keep on rising unless council does something meaningful.

“One of the problems has been that we haven’t had a policy and I know it’s not going to be the answer to all the problems but the policy addresses issues around planning and how we can prevent gaming machines going into certain areas of our community,” she said.

“It also looks at how we deal with groups across the community and our responsibility to community groups who may use gambling as a way of raising revenue.

“More than anything this is

a community problem and I think it’s one that’s been there, it’s grown bigger and more difficult and we need to be working together as a community to address the issue.

“I’m really interested what this will get back to us when it goes out for consultation.

“I hope the community gives feedback to help council frame more meat around the policy in the future.”

Councillor Jack Herry acknowledged there is “a serious problem with gambling in this municipality”.

“We’re in the top half with respect to losses, harm and experience and are we doing enough with this policy?” he asked

“If you look at some of our fellow municipalities, how does this policy compare to them?”

Cr Herry raised concerns over several potential shortfalls with the policy, for example, not excluding council events from venues with EGMs. Councillor Harvey Benton said there are limitations on what council can achieve and noted that gambling was really a health problem.

He said that somewhere along the line people have to take responsibility for their own actions.

Councillor Dave Fuller moved the motion to endorse the policy for public

consultation until 5pm November 30.

“It is an emotional subject for some, especially those who are affected by the process,” he said.

“Addiction, like alcohol, it sometimes requires the individual to move past that pride and ask for help and as a community backing each other and helping those who need that help.”

Cr Fuller also urged members of the community to read the draft Gambling Policy and Action Plan and contribute to it by providing feedback.

Greta Road fatal crash accused to face committal DEFENCE counsel will seek to determine whether a 23-year-old local man attempted to decelerate ahead of a crash which claimed the lives of his 16-year-old brother and a 26-year-old cousin at Greta Road in Wangaratta earlier this year, ahead of a committal hearing later this year.

Appearing before Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Thursday, lawyer Codey Larkin sought leave to question a police mechanical expert about the functionality of the man’s vehicle, after it left the roadway near Clarkes Lane and careened into a nearby paddock on April 9.

The 26-year-old man died at the scene, while the defendant’s brother passed as a result of his injuries six days after the crash.

A 24-year-old Beaconsfield man, another cousin of the defendant, was hospitalised but later discharged after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Crown prosecutor Ben Kerlin initially opposed Mr Larkin’s application to question the expert witness on the matter of speed, noting the specialist had only been tasked with assessing the vehicle after the crash.

In charge sheets, the defendant was accused of reaching an alleged speed of 223kph in a 100kph zone between Pyles and Panes lanes on the same day, and had also allegedly reached 152kph in an 80kph zone on Clarkes Lane between Bodsworth Lane and Greta Road.

The defendant is also alleged to have reached 96kph in an 80kph zone on Murdoch Road near Pelican Court on April 9, and reportedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.079 after the crash.

Mr Larkin said the condition of the car and the functionality of the car were “live” matters in assessing the speed of the vehicle.

He said he wished to determine whether deceleration had occurred prior to the crash, and whether it had been possible.

Magistrate Alexandra Burt permitted Mr Larkin to question whether attempts had been made to decelerate the vehicle, but noted the expert witness would not be able to comment on the alleged speed of the vehicle in the lead-up to the incident.

A half-day committal hearing is scheduled to take place on December 13.

Man allegedly encouraged dogs to attack wildlife A MYRTLEFORD man has been charged with 25 wildlife and cruelty offences for allegedly allowing and encouraging his four pet dogs to fatally attack animals on several occasions between 2020 and June of this year.

The 40-year-old is accused of committing 23 offences under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986, in-

cluding eight cruelty and six aggravated cruelty acts, for allegedly causing the pain, suffering and eventual death or serious disablement of a variety of animals during the period.

Easter grey kangaroos, a common wombat, a sambar deer and a cat are alleged to have been impacted when the main allegedly either set his dogs on the wildlife

or failed to intervene in the fight.

He also faces two charges under the Wildlife Act 1975 for illegally taking and possessing the remains of an eastern grey kangaroo.

Conservation Regulator authorised officers investigated after receiving information from RSPCA Victoria relating to allega-

tions of wildlife cruelty.

The man faces penalties of up $48,077 or 12 months in jail for animal cruelty and up to $96,155 or two years in jail for aggravated animal cruelty for each charge if found guilty.

It is also illegal in Victoria to take or possess protected wildlife without appropriate authorisation, with a maximum penalty of $9615 and/

or six months in jail available under the Wildlife Act 1975.

Conservation Regulator Hume regional manager Greg Chant said Crime Stoppers could be contacted to report similar animal cruelty.

“Any act of animal cruelty is completely unacceptable, and the Conservation Regulator is committed to inves-

tigating and prosecuting offenders of wildlife crime,” he said.

“We rely on public information to help us solve wildlife crime and urge anyone who has witnessed animal cruelty or suspicious behaviour to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

The man will face Wodonga Magistrates Court on November 21.

Students to embrace Rotary exchange THREE local students will travel to Europe next week, as part of a 12-week exchange program in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta.

The program will see the three hosted by local families and Rotary Clubs in their respective countries, before playing host in Australia to a reciprocal student from their host family in the middle of next year.

Cathedral College student Hunter Kerr will travel to Hamburg, Germany to attend Grund-und Stadtteilschule Alter Teichweg, while fellow Cathedral student Santiago Zavellos will establish roots in nearby Berlin and attend Französiches Gymnasium.

Big changes for One Mile Motors

A LONGSTANDING business in Wangaratta, One Mile Motors Wangaratta Mazda, has changed hands with Kyal Tripodi acquiring the dealership from Michael Henderson.

Mr Tripodi has worked in the car sales industry having originally hailed from Swan Hill and following some time living in Kyneton, he and his wife Kate and two children have made the move to Wangaratta.

It’s exciting times ahead, with plans to move the business from Templeton Street to Parfitt Road locked in, and Mr Tripodi is eager to activate the change which will spruce up the northern entrance to Wangaratta.

The Parfitt Road relocation has been a project of Mr Henderson’s for several years and it will offer a larger building for staff and clients, with a six-car showroom, a drive-in service drop-off, an eight-bay workshop, lounge area and kids’ zone.

“When people drop their car off for a service they’ll enter via Ashmore Street and they’ll be able to drive through the middle of the building where we’ll valet park people’s cars,” Mr Tripodi said.

Plans are to start demolition of existing infrastructure before the end of 2023 and construction in the new year, with the move to the Parfitt Road site by the end of 2024.

“The building will be custom designed for us and Wangaratta’s needs, but also Mazda’s requirements as well and the building has a huge footprint,” he said.

“We are one of the strongest Mazda dealerships in Australia when it comes to customer satisfaction and we plan to continue that.”

Mr Tripodi made a point to note that One Mile Motors has been a family business for so long and it’s going to continue to be a family business.

“For my family it’s not a career move but rather a lifestyle move to buy and run the business, to be successful and be a part of the community and continue the great work that Michael has

Mr Henderson has spent 20 years at the business, first as a sales manager and then as dealer principal for the last seven years.

“The selling of the business was a hard decision and selling to the right people to take the business forward was really important to us, and we have full confidence in Kyal to make that happen,” Mr Henderson said.

A NEW indoor stadium featuring a 900-seat capacity show court alongside two new basketball courts is set to be unveiled in Wangaratta by early next year.

While works on the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre upgrade have been curtailed by wet weather delays in recent months, concrete pours for the stadium’s new grandstand, steel structures for the show court and courts four and five, and external cladding of the show court have been completed.

Southern Cross Developers recently commenced the internal wall and roof cladding and boxing for the stadium’s seats.

The installation of roofing, as well as the preparation of the stadium’s concrete floor, which will then be timbered, is set to commence shortly.

The next stage of the project will also see internal plastering of the stadium’s storeroom completed and painted, before the floors are prepped for new floorcoverings, with the timber flooring and battens for all three courts now in dry storage locally.

Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre manager Sonya Dalgliesh said it could be challenging to keep the centre’s facilities open for the staff and public during major builds, but committed to providing access where possible and to inform stakeholders of necessary closures.

“With the construction for our indoor stadium well underway, our vision is taking shape,” she said.

“Its completion in early 2024 will ensure a brighter, better space for all sports enthusiasts.”

‘Not guilty’ plea to charges over Eldorado fatal rollover

A NORTH East man alleged to have been driving a Volkswagen utility when it rolled and fatally trapped a 19-year-old colleague near Eldorado in 2021 has pleaded not guilty to the offending.

Witnesses were crossexamined in relation to the September 11, 2021 incident during a two-day hearing at Wodonga Magistrates Court recently, with a magistrate

electing to progress the charges to be heard before the County Court.

The defendant, who was 18 at the time of the incident, is alleged to have been behind the wheel of the deceased’s utility when it rolled along Lonies Gap Road near Mulls Track around 10.45pm.

He faces charges including dangerous driving

causing death, drink driving and careless driving.

A number of defence force personnel were cross-examined during the hearing, recounting the events which ensued after they travelled from the Bandiana barracks for a camping trip.

The court heard several of the witnesses had been drinking alcohol at the

campsite throughout the evening, before six members elected to go for a drive in the victim’s twin-cab utility, with several seated in the tray of the vehicle.

A number of witnesses said all six had eventually exited the vehicle to assist in finding a witnesses’ hat which had blown off during the drive, when the defendant allegedly climbed

into the driver’s seat and began to drive the vehicle away.

One witness said he saw the deceased chase the vehicle on foot before jumping on to the vehicle’s step and attempting to talk to the driver through the utility’s open window.

The defendant reportedly told one friend who had remained at the

campsite that the deceased man had been holding onto the steering wheel in the lead-up to the fatal crash.

Neither lawyer made formal submissions to the court following crossexamination.

A directions hearing for the matter to be heard before the County Court was set for November 30.

LOCAL Lachlan Carboon was part of the Deakin University team ASCEND which competed in the week-long Bridgestone World Solar Challenge that wound down in Adelaide recently.

The former Galen Catholic College student and 2021 Wangaratta Youth Citizen of the Year enjoyed being part of the Deakin team, which was awarded the Bridgestone E8 Commitment Award for innovation in sustainability, as well as the PR and media award for its promotion of the challenge.

Held every two years, the challenge aims to push the limits of technological innovation, with teams of secondary and tertiary students travelling the outback in vehicles they have designed, engineered and built themselves, and which are powered only by the sun’s energy.

Recognised as the world’s biggest and most prestigious solar challenge, the Bridgestone event has been running since 1987, with many

alumni having progressed from participation in the event to employment with some of the world’s leading engineering, automotive and sustainable transport companies.

Lachlan, who is currently studying mechatronics at Deakin University, worked with fellow students to design and build the ASCEND team’s solar car over a year at the Waurn Ponds campus.

ASCEND was designed in line with electric cars in the current market, but with a twist. Students were challenged to design a vehicle for the Cruiser division which could be driven daily, and was sustainable in design and construction.

The result was an aerodynamic car which looks and feels as comfortable in the outback as it would on a city street, balancing aesthetics, innovation, efficiency, and practicality.

Lachlan and his fellow students used additive manufacturing (3D printing) to construct complex automo-

tive parts not easily produced through traditional manufacturing techniques.

They formed the first team from the university to enter the international competition, and the first team from Victoria to compete in a decade.

Their vehicle underwent extensive scrutineering in Darwin to qualify for the race in the CSIRO solar electric Cruiser Class.

It performed well during the hot lap time trials at Hidden Valley raceway in Darwin, gaining the team a third place grid position for the Cruiser Class at the start of the race from the forecourt of Darwin’s Parliament House.

While no Cruiser class cars made the Coober Pedy check-in point in time, the team enjoyed being part of the adventure class for the trip into Adelaide.

As first-time participants in the challenge, they left the event inspired by the people and places they encountered along the way.

The draft Financial Hardship Policy – Rates 2023 is now out for public consultation until 5pm December 1.

“There have been changes in government legislation on ratings and council are being held to account more to make sure there is very good documentation on rates

agreements that are in place and debt collection does not commence until an appropriate period of time has passed to enable community members to get back on the front foot,” Ms Brindley said.

Taking steps to reduce gambling ELECTRONIC gaming machines (EGMs) have long been problematic for society, and with the continuing rise of online gambling, the community’s most vulnerable have many ‘convenient’ ways to lose money.

There have been measures over the years to better deter gamblers from losing too much on EGMs and many would argue that the measures have not gone far enough.

Judging by the losses in Wangaratta over the last two years amounting to almost $20 million, it is fair to say more needs to be done to markedly reduce this scourge on our local community.

Many people who gamble can least afford to and as the cost of living stays high, there would be problem gamblers in the community facing extreme financial hardship.

Wangaratta council has introduced a gambling policy and action plan to act, for example, as a framework when deciding on future planning applications by venues either wanting to introduce or increase the number of EGMs. But a point was made at the October ordinary meeting this week about whether the scope the policy actually contains effectively reduces problem gambling in the city.

Cr Jack Herry suggested that Wangaratta council should be implementing the highest measures possible to help curb problem gambling.

The question has to be asked as to whether this is something that should lie with council to implement, or should it be up to anyone else but the gamblers themselves as a matter of personal choice Wangaratta council’s draft Gambling Policy and Action Plan is currently out for public consultation.

Men’s Shed seeking financial support AT an interview I conducted with a local TV station that went to air on Monday of last week, listeners were informed that the Wangaratta Men’s Shed had received a grant of $100,000 from the Victorian Men’s Shed Association from the $1 million the government had allocated to Men’s sheds.

That is totally incorrect.

There are 360 registered sheds in Victoria chasing the $860k that was available as $140k is used to run the VMSA. If each shed was to get their share, then this equates to less than $2400 per shed.

It is true that I indicated we would be making an application to the VMSA for part of that grant money, but only to the tune of $30,000.

Sister sheds Yackandandah, Wodonga and Mount Beauty have given us some assistance which is greatly appreciated.

We have also made applications to the Glenrowan Solar Farm and ARTC under their community grants but are still awaiting any decisions from them.

Apart from donations from our members, we have not received any assistance of a monetary nature toward our loss.

We have also set up a Go Fund Me page with a goal of $30,000 under the title Shed A Donation for anyone who wishes to donate.

Birchwood Open Garden raises $9429 JULIE and Gary Campbell very generously open their stunning garden Birchwood to the public every second year in order to raise funds for local hospitals and the anticancer group.

The profits are split evenly between the Benalla Hospital Auxiliary, Wangaratta Hospital Volunteer Group, and the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria’s Wangaratta Volunteer Group.

This year’s total means each group will receive $3143.

More than 125 workers contributed to lowering the track by about 1.4m under the highway bridge. The project required 400m of track to be dug up and five Olympic swimming pools of soil to be removed to allow double-stacked freight trains to pass underneath the bridge.

Open garden raised almost $8k for Friends of Lacluta

By CHLOE JAENICKE THE Wangaratta Friends of Lacluta Open Garden on Sunday, October 22 was a huge success for both fundraising and promotion.

The event featured three unique gardens owned by Robyn and Martin Cameron, Marg and Clive Pullen, and Julie and Rob Lamond.

Almost 300 people visited the gardens, raising a total of $7850.

“We had gate takings of $5800,” said John Bradford.

“Takings on the Devonshire tea, raffle and donations was $2000 and the plant stall had a profit of $500.”

“Not only did we do very well financially, it was a great day socially and it was a chance to promote the Wangaratta Friends of Lacluta and the work we do in Timor Leste.”

Mr Bradford said they were grateful for the efforts of the garden hosts and entertainment they had.

“Our garden hosts were great to work with so thank you to them and Tim Dickinson and his friends for the great music,” he said.

Physio aims to make a difference for NHW Reducing prevalence of non-urgent lower acuity ED presentations

A PROJECT to embed an advanced practice primary contact physiotherapy service into the Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) emergency department has commenced with the appointment of an advanced musculoskeletal physiotherapist (AMP).

Advanced practice physiotherapy (APP) roles have been successfully implemented across a number of health services in regional Victoria, following the lead of established services at tertiary metropolitan hospitals in Melbourne, such as The Alfred, Austin and Monash hospitals.

This innovative model aims to address the rising prevalence of non-urgent lower acuity emergency department presentations and associated demand, such as musculoskeletal disorders and acute musculoskeletal injuries.

There is strong evidence that AMP’s can improve patient flow through emergency departments, reducing patient waiting times and length of stay, resulting in a better patient experience and satisfaction.

Research has found that primary contact AMP’s spare emergency medical resources, preserving their capacity to focus on high acuity presentations.

The AMP position has been made possible through the Department of Health’s Allied Health Workforce Advance Practice Grant.

Lee Cresswell (pictured) joined the team in July and has spent the last few months setting up the scope of practice and operational guidelines for the service in the emergency department.

Mr Cresswell is an experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist who brings a breadth of clinical knowledge across the public and private sectors to the role.

His experience includes working as a senior physiotherapist and community care manager at Corryong Health

Service and physiotherapy clinical educator and lecturer at both Charles Sturt and Monash universities.

NHW’s executive director of clinical operations, Bernadette Hammond, said the emergency department managed 2336 presentations with orthopaedic/musculoskeletal conditions over a period of six months, accounting for about 16 per cent of all emergency admissions.

“Embedding a primary contact physiotherapy service should improve access to timely care for people presenting to our emergency department,” Ms Hammond said.

“We hope to achieve this by reducing wait times and improving flow for patients with orthopaedic and musculoskeletal presentations, freeing up these beds for others requiring urgent, high acuity.”

Implementation of similar services in emergency departments in the UK and Canada led to decreased wait times and up to 63pc of referrals to outpatient clinics with appropriate non-surgical manage-

ment by a physiotherapist.

Mr Cresswell said that while it was only early days, the department was already seeing benefits to the flow of patients due to the timely care and discharge of acute musculoskeletal presentations.

In the short time the service has been operating, Mr Cresswell has on average managed five musculoskeletal presentations independently per shift, plus co-managed many more patients who have presented with more complex injuries.

These numbers are projected to increase as the weather starts to warm up.

“This is not a service for people who haven’t been able to get into their usual physio for general conditions – it is an acute service dealing with emergency situations,” he said.

“It’s a busy emergency department and I have treated a vast range of presentations, from simple fractures and back pain to major muscle and joint injuries.

“It is exciting to be part of such a supportive and collaborative team.”

Driver banned after highrange drink driving charge A DRIVER caught swerving along Wangaratta’s main street without the proper licence and while more than three times the legal alcohol limit has been banned from driving for 18 months.

Defending himself at Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Monday, the Wangaratta resident pleaded guilty to a number of driving-related charges stemming from September this year, after police intercepted him in Ryley Street in the early hours of the morning.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Victoria Lennon said officers had first identified the man getting into his car and driving south along Murphy Street around 2.50am on September 3, before the vehicle began swerving within the lane and randomly pressing the brake.

He was intercepted near the Perry and Ryley Street intersection, displaying “bloodshot, glazed eye” and a strong smell of intoxicating liquor, according to Sen Const Lennon.

An evidentiary breath test subsequently carried out around 3.30am returned a 0.181 result, more than three times above the legal alcohol limit.

The court heard the man had a Samoan driver’s licence, but had not gained a Victorian licence, despite being in the state for almost two years.

Sen Const Lennon said the accused had told officers he felt alright to drive, and did not know what the legal blood alcohol limit in Victoria was.

He had started drinking at 6pm the previous evening.

The defendant told the court he had offered to give his friend a ride in the early hours of the morning.

He said he was unaware he was supposed to have sought a Victorian licence, having been working in the state for more than six months.

Magistrate Victoria Campbell urged the man not to drive during his period of disqualification, and imposed a $500 fine.

Tarrawingee gets the blues

Local line-up on free stage

By SIMONE KERWIN ‘SATELLITE’ events around Wangaratta and district are being hinted at as the potential future for a local festival feel over Melbourne Cup-eve weekend - and among them in 2023 is the inaugural Tarrawingee Blues Festival.

Happening on Sunday from 12 noon to 9pm at Tarra’s historic Plough Inn, the festival is something licencees Phil and Cate Lithgow have been considering for some time.

“We just love blues and love live music, and we thought this would be complementary to the festival,” Phil said.

“Tarrawingee is so central to Beechworth and the Milawa region, and we are often sending people on to those places, so we thought this would be a chance to draw more people to the area.

“We’re already taking enquiries from musicians asking whether we’ll make it two days next year.”

Local favourites Red Brick Radio, JD & The Cat and Soli’s Blues will kick off proceedings on Sunday.

International recording artist and touring musician Fiona Boyes, who is well-known to locals and Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues regulars having performed here on this weekend at least 13 times, is also part of the line-up at Tarrawingee.

Fiona said her performances at the Wangaratta Festival stretched back to 1993, when she lined up with her first band The Mojos, and

“We also brought out several well-known USA blues musicians to play with us over the years,” she said.

she’ll be in New Zealand for the Blues and BBQ Festival.

“I’m looking forward to performing in your neck of the woods on Sunday,” she said.

Also on the program at Tarrawingee are Melbourne-based six-piece blues/funk/soul band Rambal - featuring Nardia Brancatisano (vocals), Justin Yap (vocals/guitar), Ollie Rolfe (vocals/ keyboard), Sunny Reyne (vocals), Sam Watts (bass guitar) and Jor-

dan Pereira (drums) - as well as Melbourne blues institution Blues Roulette.

SATURDAY’S ‘Reid off Reid’ free stage at the Wangaratta Club will feature performances by four local groups who will help locals farewell the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues.

Sweet Buzz will begin the community celebration on the bowling green area at the club in Victoria Parade between 4pm and 4.45pm, followed by Soli’s Blues from 5pm to 6pm.

From 6.15pm, to 6.45pm, Wangaratta High School Sol-Cats will take to the free stage.

Rounding out the line-up at the Wangaratta Club will be Rod Paine and the Fulltime Lovers from 7pm to 8pm.

The Wangaratta Club offered to host the community free stage after a call-out from the festival board, putting forward the venue as well as the availability of food and drinks which patrons can purchase from the club’s bar and restaurant.

Festival chair Dave Fuller said the location, just around the corner from where the original, muchloved Reid Street free stage was held, would be a great chance for community members to come together and recall memories of the event.

Those conversations could perhaps even provide a springboard to where the event may lead beyond the festival’s annual general meeting early in 2024, where anyone interested in continuing the festival will be able to register their interest.

Cathedral part of festival to the last Jazz Mass on

TWO local bands will take full advantage of Holy Trinity Cathedral’s acoustics on Sunday afternoon, when they perform at the traditional festival venue.

The cathedral, on the corner of Ovens and Docker Streets, has been part of the festival most years since the early 1990s - from hosting a variety of jazz and blues performances on the Saturday of the event, through to providing the backdrop for the Sunday morning jazz mass.

For The Last Hurrah, the cathedral will be part of the last day of the final festival in its current form.

It has long been a must for festival visitors, and has also been strongly supported by locals, who enjoy seeing the attributes of the city’s beautiful cathedral on display.

The Jazz Mass is free to attend, and will this year feature the talents of vocalist Kerri Simpson (pictured) and pianist Bob Sedergreen.

Five finalists poised for National Jazz Awards

AN integral part of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues since it began in 1990 has been the National Jazz Awards.

Initially created to recognise Australia’s best jazz pianists under the age of 35, the awards were later extended to include other instruments, and vocals, with a different instrument selected for competition each year.

This year the focus is on bass, and five finalists chosen from a field of 30 will compete on Saturday afternoon at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre for what looks likely to be the final time in the rural city.

A previous NJA winner for bass, Brendan Clarke, is one of three judges - along with Andrea Keller and Chris Hale - who will deliberate on the performances of finalists Alistair Peel, Noel Mason, Anton Schulz, Jordan Tarento and Blakely McLean Davies, at the WPACC from 12pm to 4.30pm on Saturday.

Originally from Fremantle, finalist Alistair Peel found the electric bass at age 12, studied bass and French horn at school, and picked up double bass during his first year of university. He has gone on to learn from and perform with great musicians on both the local and international scenes.

Melbourne-based Anton Schulz relocated to Mount Gambier, South

Australia in 2019 to complete a Bachelor of Music at the James Morrison Academy of Music, and plays regularly in his hometown and beyond.

Blakely McLean Davies is an improvising bassist and composer, also from Melbourne, who has been a member of Tina Arena’s band since 2021. A graduate of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, he is a freelance musician in a variety of styles.

Another Melbourne-based finalist, Jordan Tarento is a double bassist, bass guitarist and composer who performs an eclectic variety of contemporary, jazz and improvised music. His debut album as a bandleader, ‘Lattices’, is due for release in early 2024.

Noel Mason is one of Australia’s most versatile and sought-after bassists. In 2015 he moved to New York to pursue a scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music, and on returning to Australia was part of Jessica Mauboy’s live band until 2023. He features on The Vampires’ latest ARIA-nominated release, ‘Nightjar’.

First prize winner in the National Jazz Awards will receive $7000, supported by the Rural City of Wangaratta, and a recording session with Pughouse Studios, while the secondplaced artist will receive $4000, and third place $2000.

Gala dinner sold out, tickets remain for Saturday

By SIMONE KERWIN FRIDAY evening’s gala dinner featuring Wilbur Wilde and Blowout will be a sell-out kick-start for the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues.

A gathering of 150 will attend the sold-out dinner at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre, which aims to offer a chance to reflect on and celebrate the festival’s 33 year history.

The gala dinner was a popular feature of the festival for many years, and was revived with Wilde - who performed at the inaugural festival in 1990 - at the helm, to help the event bow out in style.

Other ticketed performances at the WPACC which are part of the official festival program are the National Jazz Awards on Saturday from 12pm to 4.30pm, and Saturday evening’s lineup which begins at 7pm with Barney McAll and continues at 8pm with Elixir featuring Katie Noonan, Zac Hurren and Benjamin Hauptmann.

Pianist McAll was the original National Jazz Award winner at Wangaratta in 1990, and he will perform at the festival this year with improvising quartet Unforeseen, alongside Julien Wilson, Ben Hanlon and Danny Fischer.

Unforeseen will be followed by Elixir, which has evolved from its original lineup founded in 1997 by Noonan, who will take the stage with Hurren (her partner of 24 years), and Hauptmann.

Generous donor sees the benefits in backing Give Wangaratta IN a remarkable display of generosity, a silent donor and his wife, who prefer to remain anonymous, have stepped forward to support the GIVE Wangaratta organisation.

They are the latest supporters of GIVE Wangaratta’s $100,000 Challenge, which has now raised $67,000.

The silent donors’ journey towards philanthropy was inspired by their association with Garry Nash Real Estate and Mike Noble, their former solicitor.

They learned about GIVE Wangaratta, a sub-fund of Into Our Hands Community Foundation, and found it resonated deeply with their values.

Further discussions with the then executive officer of Into Our Hands, Sarah Thompson, supported the fact that GIVE Wangaratta, unlike traditional philanthropic endeavours, channels resources directly to individuals in Wangaratta who require assistance.

“This can be a simple as

supporting existing community groups or helping someone with essential needs,” the donor said.

“We wanted to make a difference to the community and know that the money was staying within Wangaratta as that was really important to both my wife and myself.

ratta for several years.

Earlier this year, upon attending the 2023 GIVE Wangaratta grant recipient presentations, they were so moved by the story of the Wangaratta Community Food Pantry that they gave an additional $5000 to support this organisation.

“I was particularly moved during their grants ceremony and felt the community pantry was doing good work – I had looked into the work they were doing previously and wasn’t sure how I could

help them but giving them this extra money was something I could do to assist in the delivery of their work,” the donor said.

The donor encouraged anyone who was considering giving to the GIVE Wangaratta $100,000 Challenge to do so.

“If you are business or a local person, know that the majority of the money will stay in Wangaratta,” he said.

“What I like about GIVE Wangaratta and Into Our Hands is that they identify

people who need help and are a conduit for bringing together people who need support with those who are in a position to give – as a community it would be great if we could see more of it.”

WANGARATTA’S Zac’s Place homelessness initiative is set to benefit to the tune of more than $1000, following a day of music, storytelling and fundraising at the Wangaratta Club recently.

The event, which was organised courtesy of local musician Michelle Britt and her band ‘Intensity’ alongside more than 15 other musical groups from around regional and metropolitan Victoria, treated attendees to eight hours of fun on the Wangaratta Club’s bowling greens on October 22.

Raffle prizes were also available on the day donated by a number of local businesses, with students of Wangaratta High School’s VCE vocational major tasked with pitching the event to potential sponsors and organising the raffle prizes.

It continued a long affiliation between the school and the night shelter project, with students having previously assisted with the creation of rough sleeper bags to be strewn throughout the community, as well as fundraising for the implementation of purpose-built lockers to be erected in town for those experiencing homelessness.

Ms Britt said she was rapt to see the community come together to show its support for the initiative, and noted the

event had strong backing from all involved to become an annual affair.

“I was over the moon... I was totally stoked with all the musicians who came together to do it and the Wangaratta Club went out of its way, so it was just brilliant – it brought the musical community together again,” she said.

“Musicians always join together for stuff like this.”

Zac’s Place coordinator Di Duursma said the fundraiser would allow the community to continue to meet regularly, as well as support the maintenance of important equipment.

She said members of the local community experiencing a challenging period in their life had also attended the event and witnessed the outpouring of support.

“People just turning up makes such a big difference – every small bit helps and that’s why we kept the cost at the door down low,” she said.

“All of the bands turned up and they performed to a small crowd in the exact same way they would to a crowd of thousands, to their credit.

“They told stories of personal experiences or of a friend’s who has experienced homelessness, so I think for many of them they had a personal reason to be there as well as just a sense of community and being able to do something to support us.”

A successful Diwali celebration

NORTH East Multicultural Association (NEMA) hosted a successful Diwali celebration filled with music, dancing and food in Wangaratta on Saturday, October 28.

Outreach worker for NEMA, Faryal Khan, said many people from the community came to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of light which symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”.

“We had an unbelievable turnout with around 200 people in attendance throughout the night,” she said.

The celebration featured a wide array of speakers, as well as entertainment ranging from dancers to face painting.

“Our guest speakers were Cr Jack Herry from the Rural City of Wangaratta and Craig Beamish, Hume region OCEL coordinator,” Ms Khan said “We’d also like to thank our entertainers, Shalika

and Shanika (Sri Lankan dancers), Sebastiano (local crooner), Arisa Herry (photographer), San who kindly agreed to do the face painting at the last minute, Giggle N Scoop for their delicious ice cream, Francis the DJ, and our cultural advocates for their help in organising the event.

“We’d also like to give a special thank you to our sponsors: Aroma Deli Café, Masala Corner, Metro Petroleum Rutherglen and Wangaratta Indian Grocery and Snacks.”

Busy locals clean up as part of Adopt-a-Roadside initiative

FOLLOWING another strenuous clean up of the 3.5km Adopta-Roadside, Bowser Road, members of the North Wangaratta Community Group gathered for a friendly chat and a welcome cuppa in the recently installed pod seat.

This is a great new asset near the playground area at the North Wangaratta Recreation Reserve.

The group acknowledges the support of the council for the pod and especially for cutting

the roadside grass, as this made collecting the bags of rubbish an easier and much safer task.

The collection always turns up an interesting assortment of discarded rubbish; besides the ubiquitous takeaway cartons, there were lead pipes, an old frying pan and a partial set of Scrabble letters among other things.

Members ask the community to please dispose of rubbish responsibly.

New Holland Honeyeater backyard revival

IN the past, garrulous New Holland Honeyeaters were only occasionally seen in local towns like Wangaratta, but now are common pretty common residents.

They are often detected by their voice which comprises a loud ‘chik’, a fainter ‘pseet’ and some chattering notes The New Holland Honeyeater is mostly black and white, with a large yellow wing patch and yellow sides on the tail.

It has a small white ear patch, a thin white whisker at the base of the bill and a white eye.

This honeyeater is an active bird, and rarely sits still long enough to give an extended view.

Sexes are similar in looks, but females are slightly smaller.

Young birds are browner and have a grey eye.

The New Holland

Honeyeater is common in heath, forests, woodland and gardens, mainly where grevilleas and banksias are found.

They are inquisitive and will often approach humans.

They also mix with other types of honeyeaters.

The New Holland Honeyeater’s range extends throughout southern Australia, from about Brisbane, to just north of Perth in Western Australia.

These Honeyeaters are active feeders.

With long, slender beaks and a tongue which can protrude well beyond the end of their beaks, New Holland Honeyeaters are able to probe for nectar in the deep flowers of Banksias and Grevilleas.

They busily dart from flower to flower in search of this high-energy food.

Their diet also includes fruit, insects and spiders.

Birds may feed alone, but normally gather in groups.

Most feeding takes place in lower areas of bushes and thickets.

New Holland Honeyeaters build a cup-shaped nest made of bark and grasses, bound together with spider web, which is lined with soft material and is placed in a bush or tree, anywhere from ground level up to 6m.

Both sexes feed the chicks.

A pair of adults may raise two or three broods of 2-3 chicks in a year.

Locally, New Holland Honeyeaters have become more common in recent years across Wangaratta probably in response to the increase in native gardens which have many nectarrich shrubs.

These gardens are proving ideal for these honeyeaters to live yearround throughout the rural city.

Walking through grief, together

By CHLOE JAENICKE WANGARATTA’S Bereavement Walking Group recently celebrated its 16th birthday.

The group was initially started by Denise Ritchens from palliative care at Northeast Health Wangaratta to help those struggling with grief to find connection with others.

“It is well documented that grief can contribute to health issues particularly in the first 12 to 18 months of bereavement,” Ms Ritchens said.

“Combining physical exercise and bereavement support within a community based approach was considered suitable to support bereavement community members, with the ultimate aim to build confidence of participants to reconnect in community activities.”

Ms Ritchens said at first the group members would walk independently and struggled to bring up the topics of death and grief, relying on the bereavement support workers there, but as time went on the group became self-sufficient as members began to support each other.

“Over time I have witnessed each member grow and blossom into confident members who can raise challenging issues of death and dying, loss and grief, with compassion,

The group is now run independently by the members after one of the founding members, Ruth Shalders, began coordinating the group around 14 years ago.

Ms Shalders said over the past 16 years the group has

helped her immensely in grieving the loss of her husband and hopes the group can help others as well.

“When I joined the support was incredible because everyone there was going through the same grief and loss, we understood the feelings everyone had, if you cried it didn’t matter,” she said.

Currently there are two groups, the Bereavement Walking Group, which meets every Tuesday, and the Bereavement Activity Group.

The Bereavement Activity Group was started for those who struggle with walking

and mobility and meets fortnightly on Thursdays.

Ms Shalders said it was great to celebrate the friendships she’s made at the 16th anniversary celebrations at the King George Gardens where members celebrated with coffee and cake.

“Denise and others from palliative care came down and it was just a really

lovely morning,” she said.

“Without grief, none of these lovely friendships would have ever developed and that to me is just the underlying benefit of the group.”

Alison Walpole celebrates 96th birthday with family AT Whorouly Senior Citizens’ October meeting a big birthday milestone was celebrated.

South Whorouly resident Alison Walpole reached the fabulous age of 96 years.

While Alison has help from relatives, she amazingly still lives at home.

She is well known as the former mayor of the Oxley Shire council, which preceded the

present Wangaratta council, and was for many years a regular letter writer to the Wangaratta Chronicle on important local issues.

Alison was accompanied at the lunch by two of her family, Peter from Melbourne and Roz from South Whorouly.

At the end of the lunch she was presented with a beautiful box of flowers and a birthday cake.

Blockbuster match to attract thousands to Wangaratta Friday, November 1, 2013

BY STEVEN BURKE WANGARATTA has secured another AFL blockbuster, locking in Collingwood and Richmond for a pre-season clash on February 22 next year.

It follows hot on the heels from this year’s sell-out Richmond Essendon clash at the Norm Minns Oval that attracted 11,000 patrons, 120,000 viewers on Foxtel and pumped an estimated $1.5 million into the local economy.

Next February’s clash is expected to be even bigger, with the biggest club in Australia, Collingwood, boasting 80,000 members in 2013, while Richmond is considered one of the “big four” Victorian clubs with 60,000 of its own members.

Both played finals this year and would be expected to do the same next season.

Other regional Australian cities will also share the preseason spoils, with Wagga, North Ballarat, Townsville and Alice Springs to host games, though in this region Lavington has missed out for 2014.

events coordinator, Tanya McAlpin, said council was ecstatic at hosting the game, arguably one of the most intriguing of the 18 match NAB Challenge that will be played over 18 days.

“If you had to choose two teams you knew would sell out, it would be these two,” she said.

“You couldn’t ask for that, it’s better than we could have expected.

“Without a doubt it will be a sell-out – we expect it to sellout faster than the previous two.”

Ms McAlpin said Wangaratta’s success hosting this year’s game was a big factor in securing the event.

“We had to put in a submission to get a game,” she said.

“The AFL actually came to us and asked us a few questions about what we did to make the event so successful and attract so many people to the game.

Ms McAlpin said the economic benefits for Wangaratta were enormous.

“Last time there was 550 room nights booked just from the teams, the AFL and Foxtel

– not including the fans,” she said.

“We did postcode surveys of all the people who attended, calculated how many were from more than 100km away and estimated

those people would have stayed for meals and for the night.

“The benefit was $1.5 million to the local economy.

“The flow-on effects were enormous.”

AFL North East Border made a joint application with council to secure the game and its football development manager, Zac Guilfoyle, said the Norm Minns Oval handled this year’s match extremely well.

“The clubs in particular were very impressed with the facilities and the show we put on for them last year,” he said.

“We’ll work hand in hand with council to share the responsibility for putting this on.”

Arrangements for the event will be similar to this year, with tickets to go on sale at a date to be advised, while capacity will be capped at 11,000, with no gate sales.

The match will begin at 4.40pm at the Norm Minns Oval on February 22 and will be televised on Foxtel.

Cat curfew, mandatory desexing CAT owners in Indigo Shire will be given six months to ensure their cats are confined within their property boundaries before a shire-wide 24/7 cat curfew is introduced next year.

instance in cats – but also in protecting our amenity, our environment and the broader consequences of cats that do roam, and do multiply in unfavourable conditions,” she said.

Some 86.18 per cent of people surveyed earlier this year were supportive of cat confinement being introduced, with 60.18pc in favour of a 24-hour curfew as opposed to a dusk to dawn curfew (26pc).

Indigo Shire cat owners were also in support of the measures (71.26pc), however,

the majority (58pc) favoured a dusk to dawn disposition.

Protecting local wildlife (94.5pc), preventing trespass (55.4pc) and protecting cats from injury, disease or being lost (48.7pc) were among the key reasons cited for support of confinement measures.

Both the RSPCA (NSW and Victoria) and the Cat Protection Society of Victoria also backed council’s recommendation.

Cr Diane Shepheard said the push for cat control had

largely come from the community.

“There’s a six-month leadin so that people can get their head around this, so I think this is going to be a great result for our community and our cats and our wildlife.”

All current registered cat owners throughout the shire are expected to be contacted by council in the interim, and provided access to brochures and information detailing how to build cat-proof fencing and cat enclosures.

Council grants regiment Freedom of Entry

By BRODIE EVERIST ONLOOKERS lined Ireland Street for the 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment’s Freedom of Entry parade in Bright last Saturday, recognising the regiment’s long association with the town and celebrating the Bright RSL’s 100th anniversary.

The ceremony began at around 11am when the regiment began marching from Park Street at around 11am, with swords drawn and accompanied by a military band.

Before they reached Mafeking Square they were halted by Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll, as per tradition.

The commanding officer of the regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Munro, was then given a scroll conferring on the unit Freedom of Entry, allowing them to enter the town with swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating, guidons flying and band playing.

Mayor John Forsyth was

then invited to inspect the regiment.

“This ceremony is a significant honour bestowed upon a military unit by the community; it’s also an opportunity for our community to express gratitude for the dedication and valour of the soldiers who have safeguarded our nation,” Cr Forsyth said.

“This is the first time the Alpine Shire Council has granted freedom of entry to any military unit.

“It is an event that pays tribute to the history of military involvement in our region and honours the local families whose loved ones served in the light horse during World Wars One and Two.” According to council, between 1913 and 1918 C squadron of the 16th Light Horse, a predecessor to the 4/19th regiment, had troops stationed in Beechworth, Bright and Myrtleford with squadron headquarters in Wangaratta.

Sunshine Walk coming home to the riverside THE 2023 Sunshine Walk to support the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund will return to a route running alongside the Murray River after flooding forced the 2022 walk north to Alexandra Park.

Trust Fund board member Di Thomas said the board and staff were delighted the walk on November 12 would return to the riverside and Gateway Island.

“Our five, 10 and 20km walks are coming home,” Ms Thomas said.

“Just as it has always been important to many walkers that the 20km walk pass the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre on Borella Road, so too is it important that we have been able to return to the Murray River.

“We are so excited that all three walks will take in the newly-opened Albury Riverside Precinct redevelopment including the new pathway along the river’s edge on Hovell Tree Drive.”

All three walks will begin and end at the Albury Sportsground in Wodonga Place, with access to the ground at the rear, adjacent to the Albury Swim Centre.

Taking part in the 20km walk for a second consecutive year is Thurgoona’s Simone McLees, who lost her mum, Deb McLees, to bile duct cancer in February, 2022.

Deb was the second person recruited to the Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) clinical trial funded by the Trust to investigate the best treatment for rare, advanced cancers.

“It gets harder each year to ask for people to donate to the same cause, but it gets harder each year to live without a mum,” Ms McLees said.

“Those who have or had cancer, or know someone who has had it, may understand the struggles of not getting treatment, not getting on a trial, lack of equip-

ment and services, or lack of staffing to support your needs.

“The Trust Fund is a 100 per cent local charity that allocates donations to the service area most in need like equipment, staff training and development, research and the Wellness Centre.

“Because of money donated to the Trust, mum was accepted to a cancer treatment trial.

Unfortunately she passed before the trial could begin, but without the community’s support, our cancer centre could

not have offered this.”

The 20km walk will begin at 7am and will make an emotional journey past the cancer centre, before heading to Gateway Island, Sumsion Gardens and back to the Albury Sportsground.

The 10km will travel along the Lincoln Causeway to Sumsion Gardens and back, while the 5km route will take in Gateway Island.

There is still time to register yourself and/or a team for any of the three walks on November 12.

Police enforcing alcohol rules at Bright Rod Run

By BRODIE EVERIST POLICE will be enforcing alcohol restrictions at this year’s Rod Run, with between 3035 officers patrolling Bright’s streets during the three-day event, according to Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of Bright Police.

As seen in previous years, alcohol consumption will be prohibited from designated public areas of the Bright CBD during the Rod Run from 10pm on Thursday, November 9 until 7am on Monday, November 13.

Snr Sgt Incoll reminded eventgoers that police can issue $200 on-the-spot fines for breaches of alcohol restrictions.

“It’s all about moderating people’s behaviour and ensuring that people enjoy the event safely without being adversely affected by drunken behaviour and other associated offenses,” he said.

The alcohol restrictions apply to public areas across the Bright CBD, including Gavan Street, Railway Avenue, Ireland Street, Howitt Park and Centenary Park.

Alcohol restrictions are recommended each year by the Events Risk Assessment Panel, which includes representatives from Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Alpine Health, council and other emergency services.

According to the Alpine Shire Council, traffic restrictions for the event will apply from the morning of November 9 to November 13, with barriers across the CBD to manage traffic flow.

Barriers will be also installed at Cobden Street, Hawthorn Lane and Pioneer Lane from 6am-2pm on Sunday November 12.

Council advises residents that Ireland Street, as well as parts of Barnard Street, Wood Street, Anderson Street and Burke Street will be closed from 10pm November 10 to 12pm November 11 to ensure the safe operation of the Remembrance Day ceremony.

Snr Sgt Incoll said they expect up to 20,000 people to attend the three-day Rod Run.

After years of mixing it with off-road heavy hitters the Jeep Grand Cherokee has taken on a certain charm, with its latest version of the Overland making a play to join the SUV aristocracy.

With its new-found power to please and attract, the Aussie Cherokee five-seater new order is represented by three variants – Night Eagle at $77,950, Limited ($83,950) and Overland, starting at $98,450, all before on-road costs.

All are powered by a single petrol V6 engine.

The opening pair come with single-speed all-wheel drive, with low range and coil springs, while the Overland (on test here) has a low range transfer case and height adjustable air suspension.

In comparison, the previous Cherokee roster included high spec Summit and S-Overland, with a 3-litre turbo-diesel V6, set back buyers around $85,000, plus on-roads, $10,000 under the petrol new chum.

Two cost options now include a Luxury Tech Group ($4500) and Off Road Group ($2750), pushing the price over a hundred grand.

The test vehicle boasted the luxury pack.

As far as customer care is concerned, the so-called ‘Jeep Wave Commitment’ includes capped servicing, five-year/100,000 km warranty and lifetime roadside assistance,

providing the regular service schedule at a Jeep dealer is adhered to.

STYLING Following on from its big brother Grand Cherokee L the WL Grand Cherokee is shorter by around 300 mm of overall length and 128 mm of wheelbase, and in looks is more SUV than Jeep 4x4.

With this modern, upmarket move, however, the newbie refuses to let go completely of its Jeep roots with the company’s trademark seven-slot radiator grille up front. Twin-pane panoramic sunroof and 20inch alloy wheels add appeal both inside and out.

INTERIOR With the trimmed body comes five seats instead of seven, with top-notch Nappa leather cladding, a big twinpane sunroof opening up the cabin, and LED ambient lighting to set the tone at night.

There’s more room (1067 litres to the roof), too, to accommodate the better class of cargo (luggage).

This is upped to 2005 litres with the rear seat backs folded.

The space includes a 12V power outlet, four tie-down points, and a full-size spare wheel nestled under the floor.

As mentioned above, the test vehicle was also blessed with $4500 worth of the Luxury Tech Group extras, including front seats that are 12-way power adjustable, with memory and massage function, there’s four-zone climate control and secondrow ventilated outboard

seats and window shades.

Up front digital rear-view mirror is augmented by a wireless charging pad.

ENGINES/ TRANSMISSIONS Unlike the previous Grand Cherokees – with optional turbo-diesel or V8 power the new WL range is limited to a single 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine producing 210 kW and 344 Nm, mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

SAFETY The five-seat petrol models have earned a four-star ANCAP rating, as opposed to the sevenseater’s five-star, due to a problem with the performance of the rear seat belts.

Standard systems include active emergency braking and pedestrian/cyclist detection, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning with active lane keeping, advanced brake assist, front and rear parking sensors and 360-degree camera view.

A word about lane departure warning: there seems to be little consistency in its workings, the beeps come thick and fast or not at all, under pretty much identical driving conditions.

Artificial intelligence, indeed.

DRIVING The accelerator pedal needs some concentrated attention, with the car being a bit skittish from the get-go, especially on inclines with ragged surfaces.

Conversely, with peak torque not coming up until 4000 rpm, it’s not surprising

the new Grand Cherokee Overland feels short on performance on the bitumen.

On road, the Grand Cherokee Overland is said to be capable of fuel consumption of 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle.

The Tester averaged more than 13 litres per 100 kilometres around town and 7.6 on a motorway dash.

Off road, the SUV takes advantage of Jeep’s QuadraTrac 2 Active 4x4 System with Selec-Terrain, low-range transfer case and Quadra Lift air suspension.

For an extra $2750 the Off Road Group adds 230 mm rear axle, electronic limited-slip differential, Trail Rated badge, 265/60 R18 Goodyear all-terrain tyres, 18inch polished/painted alloy wheels, fuel tank/transfer case/front suspension skid plate, which is good enough to earn the company’s trail rating won over the Rubicon Trail in Nevada, one of the most testing off-road challenges in the US. SUMMARY The new Grand Cherokee Overland won’t be every rusted-on Jeep fan’s favourite, but could attract the attention of a more discerning soft-road adventurer.

WARBY WALKERS SUNDAY, October 22 Bowser to Boorhaman Five people took part in this walk for the first time by the Warby Range Bushwalkers.

The weather was kind, as it was overcast which made the thirteen kilometre walk enjoyable.

This adventure started near the start of Back Estcourt Road on Three Chain Road/Federation Way. The walk was predominantly on Back Estcourt Road but in several places, we could walk on the former rail line bench.

The Peechelba East railway line was a track branching off of the North East railway line at Bowser railway station.

It was opened on October 31 1927 and closed on December 8 1986.

The line was built to primarily serve soldier settlers in the area.

We stopped near the Bowser CFA shed for morning tea.

After approximately four hours the crew arrived at the Boorhaman Golf Course and enjoyed lunch along with

the flies.

It was a pity that the Canola and Wattle flowers had just come to an end, but it was still an enjoyable walk.

Coming Events Saturday, November 4 Horseshoe Gap Loop Walk (Lesley, 0439 776 687).

A pleasant medium loop walk of approximately 15 km beginning at the Everton store.

Walking on country roads, and partly on the rail trail, and a walking track between farms.

The terrain is undulating, and there are great views of the surrounding farmlands from Horseshoe Gap. Tuesday, November 7 Mt Glenrowan to Morrisons winery (Andy, 0439 209 749).

An easy to medium walk of approx 7km to Mt Glenrowan along gravel road, and bush track, and then descending off track along the ridge to Morrisons winery for afternoon tea, and celebrating the ‘Cup’ with shared afternoon tea, wine, cupcakes and of course don’t forget your ‘Cup Day’ hat.

Non walking club members can join the walkers at the winery from about 2pm when the descent from Mt Glenrowan will be completed and the cup will be run at 3pm.

West Ridge Walk, Mt Buller, (Anne, 0427 576 664) This walk is subject to the weather as it climbs to exposed terrain and altitude.

A challenging walk of approx 6km from near Mirimbah, following the West Ridge along bush tracks, then ascending along a rocky ridge to Mt Buller summit.

It involves steep rock scrambling, and boulder climbing nearing the summit.

Car shuffle, or free bus, required back to start after enjoying a coffee at Mt Buller village.

This walk will take place on the day with weather best suited for the walk.

Easy options may be offered depending on interest.

Junior Warriors’ second tournament a blast

LAST weekend, eight junior Wangaratta Warriors basketball teams travelled to Swan Hill for their annual tournament, marking the Warriors’ second tournament of the season.

This is the first time post COVID Swan Hill has held their tournament - last year’s was cancelled at the last minute due to the floods in the area.

The under 16 division two girls finished with wins against Echu-

ca, Mildura and Yarrawonga and a loss to Wodonga that saw them finish second on the ladder and qualify for the grand final against Wodonga.

The Warriors battled hard, but went down to the strong Wodonga side 15-47.

The under 18 division two boys started the weekend with a loss to Benalla, but followed it up with wins against Echuca, Yarrawonga and Kerang.

The win against Kerang saw the team leapfrog Yarrawonga into second spot and a grand final matchup against the undefeated Wodonga Wolves.

Wodonga jumped out to a lead early in the game, but the Warriors turned up the defensive pressure and were able to tie up the score at 18 all at half-time.

The start of the second half was a tight contest with neither team giving an inch until the

Warriors went on a 22-2 run to finish the game with a 44-24 win.

Top scorers for the grand final were Max Bihun (20), Kallam Pensak (eight), Harry Pople (six) and Jacob Saunders (six), while Max Bihun was named Grand Final MVP. This weekend, the U16 D1 boys and girls and the under 18 division one boys and girls head to Geelong for their second tournament of the season.

Holly McCarthy off to Victorian trials

By WILLSON MACK WANGARATTA Rovers young gun Holly McCarthy has been invited to trial for Victoria’s u17 team.

After making her way through the Netball Victoria pathway program, which includes Wangaratta representative games, State Titles and Netball Victoria’s talent academy, McCarthy has been selected to trial for her state.

This year’s Wangaratta Rovers under 17s coach Lisa Beck believes McCarthy has a bright future.

“Holly and Milly Sharp were equal top in our best and fairest and Holly was a bottom age player which is a huge effort,” Beck said.

“I certainly think she can go on and do some big things with her netball, she works really hard and never misses training.

“She’s a player that wants to get the best out of herself.”

McCarthy starred for Rovers across the mid court this season, while also pinch hitting in the goal circle as her side reached the semi-finals.

Beck said McCarthy’s a versatile player.

“She played mostly in centre for us but was also used in goals when we needed her,” Beck said.

“I think her strength is she’s a fierce competitor and doesn’t take a backwards step.

“She’s just a strong attacking player.”

Road safety awareness windfall for College WANGARATTA College Junior Football Club has received part of $600,000 from the Victorian Government and Transport Accident Commission for their efforts in campaigning to eliminate road trauma.

The Blues will receive a $1800 boost as part of the TAC Club Rewards program, incentivising grassroots clubs across the state for showing a commitment to promoting road safety during the 2023 season.

The program encourages clubs to engage with players, members and their communities on key road safety issues and promote safe behaviours, with the dangers of distracted driving a key focus of this year’s campaign.

AFL Victoria-affiliated clubs from across the state were able to apply for the program by showing how they supported road safety throughout the year, including taking part in the TAC’s Road Safety Round ‘Band Together’ campaign.

Successful clubs are able to use the money for a range of initiatives including education programs, club transport initiatives, new equipment and uniforms and facility upgrades and improvements.

So far this year, 236 people have died on Victoria’s roads and more than half of those deaths have happened on in regional areas, where tens of thousands of local footballers and netballers travel for games and training.

Distracted driving is one of the major causes of fatal and serious injury crashes on Victoria’s roads and is particularly concerning on regional roads where people are travelling at higher speeds.

College JFC’s Matt Fraser said it was an important message to impart on the next generation of road users.

“We’ll use the majority of the funds towards some sort of targeted initiative for the under 17 player group, whether it’s additional lessons or getting someone in to talk to the team about distracted driving,” he said.

The TAC Club Rewards Program is part of the TAC’s 31-year partnership with AFL Victoria, which aims to empower clubs to develop a culture where all players and members are expected to be safe on the roads.

“We need to win this weekend and then try and even the ledger before Christmas, that’s the goal for us,” Davies said.

“We know how the track and ground plays at home so we’ll back ourselves in any day to chase 189 down, anything under 200 we’ll take.

“The deck wasn’t playing any tricks, you know what you’re going to get out of it so we just need to be prepared to roll up and dig in.”

“Tight lines and pressure in the field is our ultimate goal,” Giggins said.

“The game is still very much in the balance, two quick wickets and it’s game on - Rovers bat quite deep so

that’s our concern, but two quick wickets will put a lot pressure on them.

“We’re looking for Josh Nanson to continue his form with the ball - taking three on day one was huge for his confidence.

“Tyler Nanson can hopefully snag one or two, Matt Lister and Kent Braden can also hopefully do some damage.

“Matt has been in good touch with the ball so far this season (4/29 from 16 overs, two matches).

Bell wins NEDGA Championship

GOOD WIN: Ethan Bell took out the North Eastern District Golf Association’s Men’s District Championship on the weekend.

WANGARATTA Golf Club member Ethan Bell took out the North Eastern District Golf Association’s Men’s District Championship on the weekend.

Bell shot 114 off the stick through 27 holes at the Myrtleford Golf Course to finish two shots ahead of Beechworth Golf Club’s Vaughan Saunders.

“I’ve had an ordinary month or two so it’s nice to find some form again,” Bell said.

“The day was a grind more than anything, the course was playing really tough.

“I started well but then had a bogey on 17 and double (bogey) on 18, luckily I was able to put together a good back nine and fight back a bit.”

Bell, who now plays off scratch, said the picturesque Myrtleford Golf Club gave all golfers a challenge.

“The course was lush but it was pretty tough on the weekend,” he said.

“The ball was running a long way, it was hard to hold fairways because it was so bouncy and firm.

“There were a fair few good golfers getting around, a few around that scratch to two handicap mark and they

all found it pretty hard.

“The greens were firm and dry so trying to hold the greens was tough.”

Bell said he feels his game is in good shape ahead of the final round of the Wangaratta Golf Club’s club championships which sees the gun golfer lead by seven shots.

“September I was playing bad, I think coming out of winter and work was really busy I just wasn’t able to play as much as I would’ve liked,” he said.

“The last month or so I feel like I just haven’t been concentrating enough throughout my rounds but I think

I’m starting to find form.

“I was (playing) off one but I’m back to scratch now.”

Bell’s a dual member of both the Wangaratta and Corowa golf clubs and will captain the latter throughout the upcoming pennant season.

“Coming up I’ve got the Wangaratta club championships so hopefully I can finish off well in that and then I’ve got pennant season coming up where I’m captaining Corowa,” he said.

“The North East pennant season should be good fun, pros are eligible for it so there’ll be some good golfers getting around.”

OUTGOING coach Greg Newbold may have left some big shoes to fill out at the Greta Recreation Reserve, but if anyone can fill them, it’s Chris Dube.

The 2018 Clyde Baker Medallist was confirmed as the Blues’ senior coach on the weekend after holding the coaching reins in the twos in the 2023 season.

Dube said it was an honour to take on the responsibility of coaching a club he truly loved.

“I’ve been in a fortunate position working with and under Greg, there was probably a sense of difference but also familiarity,” he said.

“We’ve done a lot of hard work over a period of time, and you don’t want to lose any traction or go backwards, so they put the feelers out and advertised for candidates, and lo and behold I had a discussion with the coaching selection committee and spoke about where we were at as a club and a list, and things we could do to grow.

“They are big shoes to fill, but we’ve been fortunate in Greg’s time he’s developed more leaders, hopefully one of those has been myself.

“I’m not daunted by the shoes I fill, I’m the next person taking on that mantle and I’m really excited about it.”

Last season’s assistant coaches Josh Bell and James McClounan will remain on board to help Dube out, while the reserves squad will be headed up by Stewart McLeod.

The Blues have been one of the premier teams in both competitions, with the seniors and reserves both making it to the preliminary final.

Dube said there was still room to improve on the already stellar performances coming out of the sides.

“Finishing disappointingly last year leaves a bit of a taste in people’s mouths, which fuels the desire for the next season,” he said.

“I do think we’ll add some talent – I think every club wants to add to their list every year, but one thing we do really well at Greta is we don’t lose players so we are going to retain the very vast majority of our side.

This season’s wedding trends

SUMMER WEDDINGS: There are many trends set to emerge next year including smaller weddings and local destination weddings.

AS summer rolls around with warmer weather, wedding season is about to begin and there are many new trends to look out for.

One of the biggest trends to emerge since the pandemic that has stuck around is more intimate weddings.

The focus is shifting to the couple themselves as opposed to the wedding itself with smaller and often more invisible wedding parties and cutting back on luxuries
