WHEN Laura Tucker was diagnosed with brain cancer at the 26-week stage of her pregnancy last year, it was a tumultuous time for the 30-year-old Wangaratta mum-to-be.

“My whole world went from the exciting news of ‘I’m going to be a mum’ to ‘Wow, I’m going to be a mum, and I’ve got brain cancer’ which was huge,” she said.

Laura was diagnosed with adult medulloblastoma in May last year, after experiencing migraines which were initially attributed to her pregnancy.

When the migraines continued, she underwent an MRI at 26 weeks, and was airlifted to the Austin Hospital that night.

“I got to the point where I was sensitive to light, I was vomiting, and felt like my head was going to explode, and I had emergency surgery the next day,” she said.

disciplinary team including perinatal experts, obstetricians and gynaecologists at the Royal Women’s Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women, with baby Theo delivered by Caesarean at 35 weeks.

While thrilled to be cancer-free and at home enjoying being a mum to oneyear-old Theo, the last year has been something of a whirlwind for Laura.

As well as Theo’s Caesarean birth under general anaesthetic at 35 weeks, she has undergone two brain surgeries, six weeks of radiation therapy in Bendigo, and ovarian tissue grafting, which was arranged to assist her and husband Mathew with any future family plans.

McCurdy takes up new Coalition roles

By STEVE KELLY OVENS Valley MP Tim McCurdy has been appointed to two assistant shadow minister roles in the areas of regional health and ambulance services.

The Wangaratta-based Nationals’ state MP has also been appointed as his party’s whip in the Legislative Assembly.

Mr McCurdy will cover MP Danny O’Brien’s role after the Member for South Gippsland stepped up to cover former

leader Steph Ryan’s portfolios following her recent announcement she would not contest the November election.

Mr McCurdy said it is an honour to take on these new roles and noted there is a lot of work to be done.

“The government has abandoned regional healthcare and continues to oversee a major ambulance crisis,” he said.

“I didn’t have the option of having eggs retrieved, as I was pregnant, so we arranged to get some ovarian tissue taken during my C-section at 35 weeks,” Laura said.

“I hadn’t even had one child, let alone thinking about planning for another, but when they talked to us and gave us a bit more information, having that option was fantastic, and it ended up being a very simple process.

“I know we’ve got that ovarian tissue available if we want a second child - it’s like insurance.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen, and if you lose that option, it’s unfortunate.

“If the obstetricians had not told me, I would not have had a clue about ovarian tissue grafting.

“I don’t know if we will have any issues (conceiving) or not, but having that option gives you hope.”

Once considered experimen-

tal, fertility preservation is now within reach of the 8400 Australians aged under 40 who are diagnosed with cancer each year.

Royal Women’s Hospital fertility expert Associate Professor Kate Stern said ovarian tissue cryopreservation had seen great success, with multiple babies born after tissue storage at the hospital.

“Since 2014, we have been part of nine births and one current pregnancy - thanks to ovarian tissue grafting,” she said.

“Our oncofertility technology also takes in egg and embryo freezing, and cryopreservation.

“We offer these treatments to children, teenagers, and adults about to undergo cancer treatment, just like Laura.

“This gives patients a realistic possibility of having their own family, or a bigger family, after they recover from cancer.”

Young women going through cancer treatment at the Royal Women’s Hospital can opt for egg and embryo freezing or ovarian tissue cryopreservation.

The latter involves freezing a section of ovarian tissue (or a whole ovary), and then grafting it back into the pelvis.

This procedure is no longer

considered experimental for female patients who are past puberty, and can also be offered to young girls.

Researchers at the Royal Women’s Hospital have found conclusively that grafted ovarian tissue can be stimulated to produce eggs, and fertilised later through IVF. Current options for men and boys include semen cryopreservation and testicular tissue biopsy.

Associate Professor Stern said she wanted all oncology and health professionals to become familiar with oncofertility options, so young patients did not miss out on life-changing fertility treatment, and Laura concurred.

“The biggest thing for me is educating people, and also inspiring people that, even though we went through a difficult time, it was important to keep a positive mindset and look to the future,” Laura said.

“I want to drive awareness of the fact these options are there, because while it doesn’t even cross your mind when you’re looking at your situation then and there, it’s wonderful to have these opportunities available to you.”

Severe weather warning for North East A SEVERE weather warning has been issued to parts of the North East, expected to be in effect from today and into Thursday.

A strong cold front is expected to sweep through Victoria, bringing vigorous winds averaging 65km/h, with peak gusts reaching 110km/h and possible gusts of over 130km/h over the Alpine peaks.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely to come with the cold front and bring heavy rain across parts of the North East.

With the combination of heavy rainfall and expected snowmelt, minor to moderate flooding may develop from overnight Wednesday into Thursday across North East catchments, which include the Ovens and King rivers.

ADDITIONAL resources are desperately required to address increasing housing demand among the region’s at-risk population, with more than 6400 households impacted across the Ovens, Murray and Goulburn regions last financial year.

Local community housing organisation BeyondHousing managed 3538 households at risk of experiencing or currently homeless during the same time period, 63 per cent of which were returning clients who had previously engaged the local support network.

According to BeyondHousing data, some 20 per cent of those engaging in support were doing so as a direct result of a lack of available housing in regional areas.

In the 12 months since the last Homelessness Week (the first week of August), Beyon-

dHousing has constructed 34 new homes in the region through support from the Peter and Lyndy White Foundation and the State Government, with a further 150 currently planned or under construction.

However, BeyondHousing chief executive officer Celia Adams said significantly more needed to be done at a government level to implement evidence based, housing-focused solutions to the region’s housing shortage.

“Unfortunately the issues of homelessness and a lack of affordable housing are not new, it has been going on for many years, for far too long across the country,” she said.

“We can make an impact by increasing the construction of affordable housing at a scale that meets the needs of the community - but significantly more homes are needed.

This is a housing and homelessness crisis in this region that is not going to be easy or quick to solve and organisations like ours cannot do it alone. - Celia Adams “Even at the current rate of construction we could not build enough homes for the 2062 households already on the lengthy priority housing waitlist, let alone respond to the demand for affordable housing given a dire shortage of private rentals in the region.

“On the current trajectory, housing stress is only going to worsen for people on low and middle incomes - people’s ability to maintain their current housing situation is being increasingly compromised by the rising cost of food, petrol and other living expenses.”

According to Ms Adams, the rise in cost of living across the board had not been matched by an increase to the rate of income support, with two in three individuals government support rendered vulnerable and likely to access a homelessness service in the immediate future.

She said true societal change would be necessary to truly address a social housing shortfall of at least 5600 homes throughout the region, compounded by “disastrously low rental vacancy rates like we haven’t witnessed before”.

“This is a housing and homelessness crisis in this region that is not going to be easy or quick to solve and organisations like ours cannot do it alone,” she said.

“We can’t wait anymore for a long-term systematic

investment in social housing, for affordable appropriate land or courage in decision and policy making that will help alleviate rental housing shortages, such as inclusionary zoning or caps on tax breaks for investment properties, as suggested by the recent OECD report.

“Houses are places for people to live in, to create secure futures and families.

“They’re not just investments.

“As a society we need to think about having those important, brave conversations on how we all might be prepared to address the crisis and the system that has led us to this point.

“There are too many families and individuals who have already waited for too long and many more that will join this list by the time the next Homelessness Week rolls around.”

Wangaratta region has endured frosty, dry July

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN DRY skies and frosty mornings were the theme for Wangaratta last month as the region recorded a historically cold and dry July.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), it’s the first time since 1997 the average minimum temperature for July has been below zero in Wangaratta and just the second time this century rainfall for July has been recorded below 30mm.

Just 24.2mm of rain was recorded at the Wangaratta Airport last month, 40mm less than the monthly mean average recorded over the past 35 years.

The BOM had predicted last month that the July rainfall would exceed its monthly average, but fell well short.

North of Wangaratta saw similar low rainfall numbers well below July averages with Rutherglen receiving 23.8mm of rain and Yarrawonga just 12.2mm.

July was also the month for frosty

and freezing cold mornings with the average minimum temperature for the month at a chilly -0.6 degrees.

Minimum temperatures were at below zero for 10 of the first 11 days in July, with the coldest being -4.7 degrees on July 5.

But with the colder mornings came sunny skies and a higher than average maximum temperature of 14 degrees across the month.

Last year July saw more historically consistent temperature averages and a much higher 81.2mm of rainfall.

The BOM is expecting more rain to hit Wangaratta this month, predicting a 62 per cent chance Wangaratta exceeds its average 67.3mm of historical August rainfall.

There is also an extremely high chance Wangaratta sees fewer frosty mornings, with the BOM predicting a five per cent chance the monthly average minimum to be colder than the August average of 2.7 degrees and a 77 per cent chance of the maximum temperatures being hotter than the average 14.7 degrees.

COMMUNITY groups and not-for-profit organisations in the Rural City of Wangaratta could make their projects a reality by applying for help through council’s community grants program.

The program aims to help community organisations within the municipality deliver projects which help improve accessibility and equity; provide cultural or arts experiences; increase community resilience, safety, mental health and wellbeing; or encourage healthy behaviours and environmentally sustainable projects.

Grants of $1000 to $10,000 are available, with applications open from now until September 30.

THIS is an ongoing series to help the community get to know new members of the Wangaratta police force.

The series will feature different officers from the Wangaratta police station, sharing their reasons for joining the force and their favourite everyday interests.

What inspired you to become a police officer?

I joined the job relatively late being in my mid-40s entering the Police Academy.

Still actively fit and healthy I was looking to challenge myself with a career change after 25 years in the workforce.

Where did your career start? Where has it taken you?

My working career started in the health sciences as a scientist in the public healthcare sector.

I transitioned into the private sector selling scientific equipment before helping people find jobs in Science.

Now with over a decade with Victoria Police focused on the North West Metro area, I very happily took up the opportunity to take up a sergeant’s role in regional Victoria here at Wangaratta.

What brought you to Wangaratta?

Having been a regular visitor to the region to enjoy the fresh Alpine air as an athlete and cycling enthusiast, there was a magnetic attraction for my partner and I to living up here permanently.

When the opportunity arose of combining a position with Victoria Police here at Wangaratta and settling and enjoying the beauty and treasures offered by the region, my partner and I jumped at the opportunity.

Have you spent much time in the North East? What are you most looking forward to doing in the region?

My connection to the region has been through many locally run sporting events over the last 15-20 years especially in

the Victorian High Country and greater Wangaratta area.

We have grown to love the region and have returned at every available spare opportunity.

Naturally we hope to gain a more intimate and diverse knowledge of the region and explore the natural beauty and hospitality of the greater North East Victoria.

I look forward to getting involved in the local community, gain insight into what makes North East living so unique, and appreciate the many awesome places that showcase the beautiful North East.

What can you be found doing away from work?

You will probably find me out on the bike somewhere with friends enjoying the hundreds of kilometres of cycling trails, mountain bike tracks and road rides found across the high country.

Afterwards you will probably find me relaxing and enjoying some local hospitality!

A MAN has been hit with a $750 fine after carving his name into several police amenities while in custody late last year.

On Monday, Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court heard the accused was in police custody at Wangaratta Police Station on October 5, completing exercise in the station’s

rear yard when he etched his surname into the frame of the station’s rear door with an unnamed implement.

He was also said to have carved his name into a table in the station’s rear courtyard, while an alleged co-offender was also accused of vandalising the door frame.

said the act was similar to graffiti in that it could breed further poor behaviour going forward.

“It destroys the amenity of the custody suite,” he said.

The accused, who did not appear in court, was convicted and fined $750 as well as $87.20 in court costs.

Students are dancing towards bright future

By SIMONE KERWIN A GROUP of local dancers spent the recent school holidays showcasing and honing their talents as part of the Performing Artists Company’s production of ‘Newsies Jnr’ at Monash University’s Alexander Theatre in Melbourne.

After just two weeks of intensive rehearsals, Georgina Little, Lachlan Newton and Emily Masin, who are all students at Wangaratta’s Pulsate Dance Force, helped bring to life the rousing true story of newsboys fighting together for what’s right in turn-of-thecentury New York.

They applied for the roles by lodging video submissions highlighting their dancing skills.

The production of the hit Broadway musical was part of the Performing Artists Company’s Young Industry Project, which aims to bridge the gap between studio training and the professional musical theatre industry for young performers training at an elite level.

It offers students a firsthand insight into the pace and level at which the professional industry works, with the young people workshopping, rehearsing and presenting a full-scale musical over a

It also gave them the chance to work with Australian musical theatre professionals, including actor Rob Mills.

The students’ four professionally-produced performances held at the end of the July holidays featured full costuming, set design, lighting and sound production.

Samantha Pulvirenti, studio director at Pulsate Dance Force, said it was wonderful for the students to be given the opportunity, and as their long-

time teacher, to watch them shine.

“Georgina has been with us since she was two years old, Emily since she was about seven, and Lachlan since grade six, so it’s exciting to see them looking to turn something they love into a career,” she said.

“Especially as regional students, it’s a great opportunity to take part in something like this.”

Georgina, Lachlan and fellow Pulsate Dance Force student Xavier McKenzie are also excited to have been accepted to full-time dance programs

based in Sydney beyond their current year 12 studies.

While Georgina and Lachlan will undertake advance diploma of performing arts at ED5 International, Xavier has been offered a place at Village Nation to complete a diploma of dance, with a part scholarship awarded.

It’s the second consecutive year that three Pulsate students will go on to further study in the performing arts.

“The talent coming through at the moment is so strong, and having three in a year go on is really something,” Samantha said.

Paramedic boost to rural city SEVEN more paramedics have been recruited to the Rural City of Wangaratta as part of a major statewide push by the Victorian Government to lift the emergency service workforce.

Wodonga has also received seven new recruits, Benalla three and Yarrawonga two each, but there area no new recruits for Alpine or Indigo shires.

Minister for Health, Mary-Anne Thomas, confirmed the recruits on Friday, saying 404 had been signed up this year, including 64 who started their training last week, 18 off whom will be off to regional Victoria once completed on August 22.

Beginning with a four-week induction program which gives them the vital skills they need before they hit the road, recruits learn how to safely move and load patients to prevent injuries, undertake aggression and assault prevention training, and driving ambulance vehicles to ‘lights and sirens’ cases.

Graduate paramedics become fully credentialed after one year, after which they continue professional development and education for their entire careers to help them provide the best care and stay safe while they’re doing so.

Ms Thomas said the government’s $35 million boost earlier this year fast-tracked the recruitment of 120 paramedics, who started in May. As part of the Victorian Budget 2022/23, a further $124 million has been invested to put even more paramedics on the road and build on record recruitment levels.

Ambulance Victoria recruited 700 paramedics in 2021 - its single largest annual recruitment ever - and is on track to recruit the same number this year.

“This will be critical in responding to increasing demand, with the organisation recently experiencing its busiest two quarters on record,” Ms Thomas said.

Youth artwork sparked by creative sessions ARTWORK created by students from local primary schools in the King Valley region will take centre stage when the Spark Kids exhibition opens at the Wangaratta Art Gallery on Friday.

It involves students from Myrrhee, Whitfield District, Greta Valley and Edi Upper primary pchools, who worked in collaboration with artists including Marc Bongers, Kim Ciancio, Ben Jenkins, Jamie McNeil and Cameron Robbins.

The exhibition is one outcome from a specifically designed recovery program in partnership with the King Valley cluster schools which was made possible through the generous funding from Murray Primary Health Networks (PHN).

The creative learning program was delivered over a six-month period engaging local, national and international artists together with the Wangaratta Art Gallery staff to support the creative arts in the King Valley schools cluster through participation in workshops and art making sessions.

The gallery said students engaged in creative practice that connected them to their immediate environment; renewing their knowledge and understanding of the fragility of the endangered environment around them and how to use that environment as the starting point for creative expressions and innovative arts practice.

One aim of the program was to foster a continuation of the creative thinking, higher order thinking and problemsolving process inherent in artmaking for both the students and staff.

The exhibition includes drawing machines, solarography prints, wind drawings, video and sculptural works.

The opening will take place on Friday, August 5 from 10.30am to 12pm and it will be officially opened by Ian Davidson, director of Regeneration Solutions Pty Ltd. Fast, bipartisan gas action needed THERE has been plenty said in recent weeks from politicians at every level, vested interests and lobby groups, and support services and welfare agencies about our current energy crisis.

While the current portents of doom have been hurried upon us largely because of Russia‘s despicable invasion of Ukraine, we were heading to this anyway as more and more coal–fired generators closed in Australia.

The inaction of the last decade, largely by the Coalition government, has meant we are in a far more vulnerable situation than we needed to be.

Whatever solutions people may argue about for our energy future, without an actual energy policy there was little chance private enterprise was going to make any major investments or commitments to create the replacements.

Now we desperately need gas to get us through whatever transition period we have to a renewable future and that must be the priority for all political parties.

The Federal Government must be given bipartisan support to demand gas suppliers maintain a gas reserve for the east coast to ensure a secure and affordable energy supply.

These companies have been making windfall profits while Ukraine and half the world suffer from Russia‘s actions, profits that are barely taxed due to arrangements with previous governments of both persuasions, and it has to stop.

This does not mean they won‘t still be in the black, it just means the portion saved from export will be less profitable, and that will be a small percentage compared to what they export.

It has worked in WA, so there is no excuse.

Even The Greens, the cross–bench and the opposition would have to agree with that.

Great for residents to offer Afghanis hope RE: A helping hand for Afghan refugees Wangaratta Chronicle, Friday, July 29.

I AM writing to commend the Wangaratta Chronicle for researching and publishing this important, informative and timely article.

It outlines clearly the needs of innocent Afghani families facing persecution and the efforts of the Barker family and Ms Weinberg in Wangaratta (and others throughout Indi) to do something significant to help them.

I hope you receive many letters of support for your apposite journalism and, conversely, very few from those unable to see how wonderful it is that these sponsors in Indi are willing to provide hope and future safety to Afghanis in fear of their lives - for doing no more than we, in Australia, would consider highly commendable.

The Regional Medical Training (RMT) website regionalmedicaltraining.com.au is the result of a collaboration of 11 universities with rural clinical schools and regional training hubs in the regions.

It is a shared initiative to support local graduates to stay rural, funded by the Federal Department of Health’s Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program.

With 24 medical specialty pathways and accredited placements mapped, the website increases its capacity as a one-stop shop for medical students and trainees investigating career and training study options in south east regional Australia.

The new additions to the website are updated General Practice and Rural Generalist fact sheets, with cardiology, respiratory medicine and nephrology newly joining 21 other medical training pathways found across regional Tasmania, Victoria and NSW, as well as the limestone coast region of South Australia.

This complements the extensive resources already included on the site.

Regional Medical Training’s unique search portal maps out regional training futures that can be searched by either location or specialty.

If you’re particularly keen to live in a specific regional location you can search by region or, alternatively, if you are focused on pursuing a particular medical specialty you

can enter it into the map engine and all of the regional towns and cities where you can train are documented.

This is a big boost for visibility of rural training opportunities and works to attract doctors to the regions.

Here in the border region, there are multiple specialty pathways that graduating medical students and local trainees can pursue at a local level.

On top of the current 24 specialty training pathways currently showcased on the website, more will be added over the coming months, including urology and addiction medicine.

Families must be at centre of Australia’s energy policy OPINION

A

ustralia has an energy crisis and a new government.

These two facts give us both an opportunity for sensible energy reform, and a government that might be smart enough to seize it.

So far, the blame game for the crisis has focused heavily on supply side problems in electricity generation - the unreliable coal power stations, the broken supply lines.

But this only tells half the story.

If we are to lower energy bills and meet our climate targets, we really need to think about the demand side.

Households and communities - the people who purchase and use electricity - must move to the centre of energy and climate policy.

Australians know rooftop solar has been a good deal, and only continues to get better.

That is why they are frustrated when the government changes the feedin tariffs they have enjoyed.

Australians also know electric vehicles are coming.

They want them and cannot fathom why government policy has frustrated their arrival.

Australians understand once we are driving electric cars fuelled by rooftop solar, it will be much cheaper.

In fact, at just two cents per kilometre, driving an electric car will be 90 per cent cheaper than a petrol one.

Australians also know batteries are getting cheaper and will level the playing field in the energy system, allowing energy to be stored and used far cheaper than it can be from the grid.

We are also waking up

to the fact using gas in our homes for cooking and heating is not only expensive, but also a leading cause of respiratory illness.

Going electric at home with modern induction stoves, and electric hot water and heating, is a cheaper than burning gas, and healthier, too.

Reducing household emissions doesn’t mean sitting in the dark and cold.

It means using energy smarter, enjoying more comfortable homes, and saving money.

And we have never had a better chance to help Australians seize these opportunities from renewables. It’s time to start empowering Australians to take control of their energy.

That’s why the current moment calls for a comprehensive household and community energy package, led by the Federal Government.

Such a package would have five parts.

• First: electrification loans.

Australians know technologies cheaper to run over the long haul are more expensive to buy up front.

And with the price of everything going up, most people don’t have the cash on hand to get into the great electrification savings game.

This is where the government can step up.

A $10,000 loan for households to install solar, batteries, reverse-cycle air conditioners, solar hot water, electric cooktops or double-glazing would unlock immediate savings for millions of households.

As it stands poorer Australians are stuck paying higher power bills because they are locked out of renewables for their home, or more efficient appliances.

No-interest loans address this inequity as well as reducing demand on the grid.

• Second: the government could also give the market

TIME FOR ACTION: Now is the time for sensible energy reform according to Indi Independent federal MP Helen Haines and founder of Rewiring Australia Dr Saul Griffiths. certainty by adopting phaseout dates for the sale of new fossil-burning machines.

The UK will end the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

Norway will do it by 2025.

With our vast distances and after a decade of bad policy, these timelines are probably too ambitious for Australia.

But electric vehicles are coming, and a clear timeline and incentives for their adoption will make them cheaper for everyone.

The Netherlands is phasing out new natural gas appliances by 2025 and will heat all its eight million homes with electricity by 2050.

Nearly every appliance manufacturer that makes gas appliances also makes electric equivalents, so a clear timeline for transition allows for straightforward business planning.

• Third: we need to secure the grid by accelerating the roll-out of batteries.

Labor’s community battery plan should be brought forward, starting with the most vulnerable communities at edge-of-grid locations like Corryong, which is developing its own micro-grid in response to the 2019-20 bushfires.

• Fourth: we need to boost local ownership of renewable energy generation.

Australia needs more renewables, and fast.

To move at the required speed, we need to deliver more of the economic benefits of renewables to the regional communities that play host to them.

The government could achieve this by unlocking investment in mid-scale, community-owned solar and wind projects with a simple underwriting scheme.

Australia already has a handful of such locallyowned projects. We could have hundreds more.

And at the community scale, the government should pick up the successful Victorian Power Hub program and roll it out nationally.

This program delivered dozens of small-scale renewable projects for community groups like sporting clubs and childcare facilities, returning $13 of benefit for every dollar invested.

Let’s take it national.

• Fifth: Finally, we need new rules that back households, not fossil fuel companies.

As the government redesigns the electricity market, it must deliver a set of rules suited not to the world that is passed, but the world that is coming: a world in which most machines in our lives will be electric, where most of our energy will come from the sun, where the cheapest power will be the stuff that comes off our roofs.

The rules of the current system were written for a handful of giant coal and gas plants that caused our current crisis.

But in a few short years, our millions of households and businesses will operate a vast network of tiny power stations, batteries and flexible loads.

We need them all working together to make our energy more affordable, reliable and robust than it has ever been.

So we need a fairer system to pay households for the energy they generate, to incentivise vehicles to charge during the day, to bring community batteries into the system where they would do the most good.

This basic guiding principle is called “grid neutrality” - the idea all power generators and batteries should be treated equally, regardless of their size, be they households or mega wind farms.

Fairer rules will incentivise households to electrify, decarbonise, and save money.

None of this is easy, but Australia has so much to win.

Going electric can save a household $5000 a year.

Weaning our economy off imported fossil fuels would end our vulnerability to global price shocks.

And we’d fix our emissions problem to boot.

Australia’s future can and should be as a more selfreliant, low-emission nation powered by ultra-cheap renewables, where everyone saves money.

With a new government, and an energy system that needs rebuilding, now is the moment to start making that happen.

Wrong time for solar batteries

By STEVE KELLY THE skyrocketing cost of energy, including electricity prices, has injected some life back into the solar industry with more households searching for ways to save money.

But while many people might like the idea of harvesting power, the economics can still be a battle.

Watters Electrical sales and marketing manager Troy Coburn said there are still a few blockades within the industry that prevent easy access to affordable battery uptake.

Mr Coburn said batteries still aren’t at a level where they’re financially viable, even with the

He said this would have many people paying off their batteries beyond the life of the battery itself.

Mr Coburn said people buying batteries use them more as a necessity if the power goes out, to refrigerate food or pump water to their homes, or there are the people who buy a battery solely for environmental reasons.

Another way to access the benefits of excess energy from a solar system is to join a virtual power hub such as the one in Yackandandah.

Mr Coburn said this allows people to send the power from their home to the energy storage area within their community and other residents can access power from there.

Generally batteries being used to store solar generated energy are good in theory in that they allow consumers to harvest energy for use when the sun goes down, but in a practical sense more work is

needed to make them financially viable.

There are also complicated factors due to a change in regulations that came into place two years ago that requires all solar panels to be installed 20mm from the guttering on a roof, however, 90 per cent of existing installs are less than this, as they were screwed to the start line on the gutter.

Mr Coburn explained that if an owner has an existing solar system and wants to connect a battery they need to upgrade to a hybrid invertor.

But to do this it requires a

new certificate of electrical safety and the inspector will inspect the entire system before it’s approved.

“If the system is older than two years it’s not going to meet the 2022 standards,” he said.

“Any of those systems installed at the starting point are not compliant so you have to physically move panels around to get the certificate approval to upgrade the invertor.”

The invertor and the redesign of the system would all come at a much greater cost to the installer.

Mr Coburn said Victoria has had the best battery subsidy in the country, last year at $4174, and as of July 1 it dropped to $2950.

The sticking point though has also been for people who have already accessed the Solar Homes Program’s PV panel rebate, as they have not been eligible for the battery rebate.

When battery tech improves, prices come down and government and industry find a way to make them more affordable, perhaps then it will be the right time to maximise the benefits.

Bridget ready for Rotary exchange adventure

By SIMONE KERWIN BRIDGET Pizzini is counting the days until she flies out on Saturday, bound for a 12-month exchange to Germany with the support of the Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta.

The year 10 Cathedral College student will travel from her home in Tarrawingee to be based for the next year around the German city of Giessen, which is situated 60km out of Frankfurt and is similar in size to Ballarat.

She will return this time next year to complete her year 10 studies, before heading into VCE in 2024.

Bridget’s host club is the Rotary Club of Giessen Altes Schloss, and she will stay with four host families during her 12-month adventure, firstly in the small village of Lich-Eberstadt.

“It’s amazing - I’m really excited,” she said.

While she studied German for a while in junior school, Bridget is looking forward to

She has travelled overseas before, for a month-long family holiday to Italy in 2019, and like most young Australians amid the pandemic, can’t wait to see more of the world.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting new friends in Germany, and learning about a new

culture,” she said.

A keen artist and photographer, Bridget said she was also looking forward to exploring the country’s centuries-old architecture.

“I would like to do something in design when I’m older, so this will give me another perspective,” she said.

“I’m very grateful to the Rotary

Club of Appin Park Wangaratta for giving me this amazing opportunity.”

In the lead-up to her exchange, Bridget has been attending the Rotary Club’s meetings and assisted with its Anzac Day barbecue, and said she had enjoyed the chance to find out more about the club’s activities.

A LOCAL woman who requested a welfare check on her father was almost three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she drove from the scene earlier this year.

The 49-year-old did not appear at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Monday, with Magistrate Peter Dunn electing to hear the matter ex-parte after the accused allegedly called for emergency service crews to attend her father’s Glenrowan home on the night of February 8.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Les Hare said response crews had met

the woman near Gladstone Street’s tourist centre, when police noticed the woman was behaving in an erratic manner.

After the wellbeing of her father was confirmed, LSC Hare said the woman began driving northbound along Gladstone Street towards Wangaratta around 9:30pm, travelling approximately 100m without her headlights on.

She reportedly became “highly emotional” and “borderline hysterical” when subsequently intercepted by police, initially refusing to cooperate before returning

a blood-alcohol reading of 0.139.

According to LSC Hare, the woman had been drinking with friends earlier in the evening telling officers she had not drunk more than three quarters of a bottle of wine.

Magistrate Peter Dunn said a prior conviction of drink driving in 2013, when she blew a reading of 0.154, was relevant in the matter, and imposed a fine of $750.

He also cancelled her licence for 26 months, with the sentence backdated to February 8.

Road Safety Act questioned in court A MAN who attempted to question the legality of the Road Safety Act has been sidelined from driving for two years, after refusing breath and oral fluid tests during a routine traffic stop near Myrtleford last year.

The 49-year-old Wodonga man attempted to adjourn the matters at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Thursday in order to engage a lawyer, however, Magistrate Peter Mithen said the accused had sat on his rights following previous adjournments in December and April, and ordered the matter be heard.

Senior Constable Graeme Weldon detailed to the court how he and Leading Senior Constable Colin Boyle had been conducting traffic stops along Buffalo River Road near Myrtleford on May 1 when the accused revved the V8 engine of his Pontiac coupe several times while driving past.

An elderly woman police had been conversing with asked the officers whether they would be speaking to the man as a result.

Body-worn camera footage of the subsequent intercept was shown to the court, showcasing the defendant refusing to comply with Snr Const Weldon’s requests to view his driver’s licence and to undergo roadside drug and alcohol tests.

The accused told police “I don’t give a s*** about your (Road Safety Act) sections” before extending a piece of paper which he told police was a legal document, and attempting to record the interaction with his phone.

Snr Const Weldon informed the accused he would be charged as a result of his refusal to comply with police directions, while LSC Boyle linked the man’s vehicle registration to an image of his licence on a police database.

“There’s no crime here sir, do not threaten me,” the accused was heard to say.

“Are you my creator? I only answer to my creator.”

Defending himself, the accused contested the validity of the charges in court, regularly objecting to statements made by police prosecutors

and refusing to acknowledge his prior convictions when tabled by police.

He said police had failed to present to court with a proclamation certificate for each charge, however, Mr Mithen said it would not be necessary.

Mr Mithen said the footage clearly showed police had operated within their rights under the Road Safety Act. “I’m satifsfied the act is legitimate and valid - (the accused) clearly in my view refused a breath test and an oral fluid test.”

Magistrate Mithen imposed a mandatory licence disqualification of two years and a $1200 fine, however, the accused said he would contest the sentence in the high court.

“I haven’t been in good health for the last two to three years, and Mr Weldon and Mr Boyle have caught me on a really bad day,” he said.

“Your decision will cause me harm and I have no other choice but to take this to the high court.”

Vocal Dimension set to sing music for our time FINAL preparations are underway for local choir Vocal Dimension’s performances in Benalla and Wangaratta this weekend.

According to the group’s publicity officer, John Schilling, the choir is looking forward to sharing a program of poignant music with an audience once again, after what has been a considerable hiatus.

“The path to bringing these concerts to fruition has again been challenging, thanks to COVID-19, with these being the group’s first performances in over 12 months,” he said “We’re presenting a slightlyshorter program of diverse, very attractive works, titled ‘Music for our time’.”

A feature of the program is

a suite of five choral excerpts from Karl Jenkins’ acclaimed “The Armed Man: a mass for peace”.

Sir Karl Jenkins is a Welsh composer and performer with an amazingly diverse career, having started with jazz and rock, performed with groups in the late 60s and 70s and gradually incorporating more ‘classical’ elements into his compositions.

His compositions including the hit ‘Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary’ and he has collaborated with many artists, drawing lyrics from ancient to modern texts.

John said The Armed Man was a commission from the Royal Armouries Museum as part of the millennial celebrations and was dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo crisis.

He said it is an anti-war work, with the listener first hearing ‘the armed man is to be feared’ - the 14-movement work finishing with ‘better is peace’.

Elements of the Christian Latin Mass are included, the Islamic Call to Prayer and a passage from the Indian ‘Mahabharata’ are among the many sources of text and style of the work.

It has become very popular, having being performed in all corners of the globe since its premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in 2000.

“We’re performing the five choruses only, and thus the progression to the call to peace is not as evident as when hearing the work in its entirety,” said John.

“We encourage everyone to

explore Karl Jenkins and his music, much of which is available online - meanwhile we’re bringing our audiences this taster of ‘The Armed Man’.

“With the continuing conflict in Ukraine very much in our thoughts, this is very much ‘music for our time’.”

Also on the program is Byrd, Lauridsen, Mozart, Bruckner and more.

Performances will be held at the Benalla Uniting Church on Saturday at 3pm and at the Wangaratta Uniting Church hall on Sunday at 3pm.

Galen Catholic College PLANET Ark’s National Tree Day started in 1996 and has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event.

This year the Galen Social Justice team thought this was a great opportunity to promote.

Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink and provide habitat to over 80 per cent of the world’s biodiversity.

ALL classrooms have their reading program well scheduled so that the students can take on their learning when they are fresh.

First thing each morning, classes can be observed reading their Just Right books, having reading conferences with their classroom teacher, working on suitable texts in like groups and enjoying listening to either fiction or non-fiction books being read aloud.

The focus is not only to create fluent readers but also to show an understanding and some comprehension of what is being read.

Reading is a skill that students will take with them into everyday their living and although it is not something every student enjoys doing, having the confidence to know they are capable of being able to read a variety of material allows them to grow as a student and an individual.

Locals say changing speeds in Cheshunt won’t fix the road RESIDENTS of Cheshunt have called for a review of recent changes to speed limit zones in the township, saying signs alone will not address the problem of dodgy roads and speeding motorists.

Two locals decided to start a publically accessible petition, calling for previous speed limits to be reinstated and other measures be adopted to address the issues, including improving the roads, installing ripple strips on entry to the crossroads and potentially introducing a 40 kph speed limit from the crossroads to the first bridge at Cheshunt where cars frequently stop to access the local store, bakery, bus stops and community hall.

Cheshunt, a 60 zone on the Rose River Road from Millers Lane to the crossroads, and new signage in Cheshunt suddenly going up and being placed too close to the road.

“The locals who use that road every day were not happy, so we decided to put in a petition to council to counter balance what had been done,” she said.

“The other issue was that when they removed the original signs, they cut them off at ground level and left open, metal pipes in the ground that an animal could put its foot into and get hurt.

“They’ve put the new signs even closer to the road to the point where if two large vehicles like a bus and a truck pass each other, they could hit their side mirrors on them.

ANGLICARE Victoria and the Diocese of Wangaratta are planning for their first Winter Appeal since 2019, this Sunday.

Rev David Still, who has been in the role of Anglicare Victoria community development worker/parish partnerships coordinator for Wangaratta for almost three months, said the appeal would involve the collection of soup cans and financial donations for those in need, as well as fundraising ‘Soup Sunday’ gatherings in

parishes across the diocese.

Fifth Sundays in the Diocese of Wangaratta are usually an opportunity for multi-centre parishes to gather for lunch or morning tea, and Rev Still said this would fit well with the Soup Sunday concept.

“Soup is a great offering; if you have access to a barbecue or stove, it’s a warm, filling, hearty meal during these cold winter

months which can help you get through,” Rev Still said.

“Especially this year, the donations of funds and soup will go a long way to support local people in need.

“I certainly expect demands on our services, including (emergency relief program) Loaves and Fishes Christians Caring, to grow in the coming 12 months, as a result of the challenges facing us as a community.”

Rev Still said he was regularly heartened by the generosity displayed by the Wangaratta and district community when residents were called upon to help those in need, and the current economic and social climate would again prompt those generous donations.

“For instance, we had someone come in who needed help for six months, and then when their own

circumstances changed for the better, wanted to donate to help give that support to others,” he said.

Donations of soup or funds from non-parishioners are welcome as part of the Winter Appeal, and can be arranged by contacting Anglicare on 5723 7900.

Rev Still said he was enjoying his new role, after spending 29 years in parish ministry, most recently in

the Wangaratta West and the Warbys parish.

“I finished school and worked for a time in this area, so I feel quite connected to the North East,” he said.

His new position involves assisting with Loaves and Fishes Christians Caring, as well as partnership programs with parishes across the diocese.

Lions sneak back into finals, Bats soaring ■

Elsewhere, Goorambat maintained a healthy run of form with a 59-53 win over a talented Moyhu side at Moyhu.

The Hoppers led by a goal at quarter time, but the Bats’ class shone through the second quarter, breaking out to a seven goal advantage before widening the margin to 10 ahead of the final term.

Goorambat managed to hold off a resurgent Moyhu attack, home by six

goals and maintaining their top three position.

Bats’ coach Amelia Gall said the final touches were being made to her side ahead of a challenging finals campaign.

“We have been trying new things before finals and we are really starting to see what works for us and when,” she said.

“Moyhu came out hungry and had a great start and had us rattled at the beginning - they had improved a lot and there shooters were very accurate and fast.

“We made some changes in the second quarter and we were able to settle and start to get our style of play back.

“Fitness and court flow are going to be a big focus for us in the next few games.”

In other round 18 matches, Benalla handed Bright a nine-goal loss, and Milawa dispatched North Wangaratta 67-27.

English pair combine for nine

WANGARATTA City’s striking duo combined for a whopping nine goals in their poleaxing of Wodonga Diamonds on Sunday.

Dan Kelly booted five, while Adam Burchell kicked four as the Devils romped to a massive 10-3 victory at South Wangaratta Reserve.

“It was a bit of a blow out,” Wangaratta City coach Daniel Vasilevski said.

“It was good to score a few goals and great for ‘Burch’ (Burchell) and DK (Kelly) to get a few each.

“They were both clinical and finished the chances they were given which was good to see because if we had done that last weekend the result may have been different.

“But it wasn’t the greatest performance even though we did win by a bit, there’s certainly still plenty of improvement to do.”

Vasilevski still believes his midfield isn’t settled.

“We’re still struggling in the midfield even though we did get (Liam) Nash back on the weekend,” he said.

“I feel like we’ve been too casual in there all year, we’re not marking players close enough and Diamonds scored three goals through that.

“We felt like Sunday was a good chance to keep a clean sheet but we allowed them to get through too easily.

“It just comes down to not being settled in there because we’ve been swapping players in the midfield every week because of injuries.”

On the positive side, Ethan Whiley made his return from injury, coming off the bench with 30 minutes left to play.

“Ethan came on in the

last 30 mins and did really well,” Vasilevski said.

“He set up a couple of goals and it was good to see him back in the attacking line.

“He’s a really creative player so it was a real positive getting him back.”

The Devils goal difference received a massive and now sits nine clear of the second placed Cobram so if the Roar are to slip up in the next few rounds Wangaratta could end up rising a spot.

“If Cobram do slip up we could finish second now that our goal difference has gone up a fair bit,” Vasilevski said.

“For us though we just need to focus on playing well ahead of finals because right now we’re not playing at a level that will hold us in good stead come finals time.

“We’ve got games against Melrose and then Boomers so they’re going to be great opportunities to touch up a few areas of our game.”

Lady Devils outplayed in final 10 minutes

By NATHAN de VRIES A FIERCE back-and-forth between Wangaratta’s division one women and their Wodonga Diamonds foes resulted in a flurry of goals in the dying minutes of the match, with the Lady Devils coming up second best in the 1-2 defeat.

Wangaratta went into the match severely undermanned, without star Beth Cope and powerhouse players like Georgia Mahoney and Ruby Snowdon all absent due to injuries, but the young side

fought valiantly to half-time.

Coach Lockie Campbell said the effort provided from the team in tough circumstances was very impressive, but wasn’t sustained properly.

“We knew it was going to be difficult from the start, being down three key players, but the girls held their heads high and wanted to soldier on and try and get the points,” he said.

“At the start of the match we looked really strong, the first half was our better half.

“We came out strong, we were determined and had a couple of chances on goal

but we just couldn’t put them away, unfortunately.

“It was just the mentality on the field, the way some of the girls went about certain aspects of the game.

“In the first half there was a lot of cheering for each other from the sideline and on the field, and then the second half all of that died away.

“They scored a goal and the heads start to drop, so instead of fighting a bit harder, we kind of just threw our hands up in the air and thought ‘that’s it’ when it wasn’t, there were still goals in the game.

“We could’ve bounced back but unfortunately the heads just weren’t there.”

Without their captain, Anika Miller Cooper stepped into the vacuum left by Cope, and led her side ably.

“She (Miller Cooper) was determined, she’d get around the girls, all the other girls look up to her - she walked out as our captain on the weekend and she definitely took on that role,” Campbell said.

“Some of the young girls played well like Reese Chuck, she had an absolute killer of a first half out on the left wing,

and young Ella Antonello, she was the one who scored our goal (90th minute).

“She got thrown around all day, from playing centre-back to midfield, to out wide - just her ability to play anywhere I ask her to and she just goes 110 per cent, she’s just incredible.”

The division one side has only one match remaining in the home and away season, set for Saturday, August 13 at Glen Park against St Pat’s.

The reserves side also tasted defeat, downed 0-3 by Diamonds.

Female footballers celebrate Indigenous round WANGARATTA Rovers and Thurgoona Bulldogs celebrated an Indigenous round during their matches at the WJ Findlay Oval on Sunday.

The day was an opportunity for the Hawks to learn about Aboriginal culture, and the importance of being allies with Indigenous people and being part of reconciliation.

In the lead-up to the game, Indigenous Hawks player Ally Ballard shared her story with the under 14s, under 17s and opens women’s teams at training.

On game day, before the start of the open women’s match, fellow Indigenous Hawks player Nikita Brown spoke to the girls about where her family is from, and the importance of sharing stories and talking

about reconciliation.

The Rovers’ players, runners, coaches and umpires from both sides then gathered on the oval, with Bpangerang Elder Uncle Dozer leading the welcome to country and smoking ceremony.

Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees also attended, and acknowledged the passing and special contribution to Indigenous culture of Archie Roach, in whose honour all three Rovers teams wore black arm bands.

Thurgoona players wore Aboriginal designed coloured armbands, while the Rovers also wore Indigenous-designed socks; the design acknowledged the determination, fight and wisdom that has come before us, and the foundations laid that continue to be built on.

Open women look to finals WANGARATTA Rovers hosted the last home and away game of the season on Sunday, taking on Thurgoona in all three grades.

Amid a scrappy start to the open women’s match, the middle of the ground was well-controlled by Celia Piesse, Emma Gosbell and Amy Collins in the ruck, and after settling in, the Hawks started to take control of the game.

After a long kick to the goal square, Kat Ginnivan booted her first-ever goal, and Rovers then started to get on top of the contest, with repeat forward entries leading to a Jess Whitehead major.

In the second term, Leanne Branson was fantastic on the wing, picking the ball up cleanly and taking on the opposition at every opportunity. One of Leanne’s brilliant runs ended in a great goal on the run on her non-dominant foot.

Jess Maddy played well in the middle, and her long kicks hit targets when running towards the Rovers’ goals.

Kate Burns, in her first game back since knee surgery, took some great marks in the backline and fed the ball out to Crystal Stevens, whose run and carry was a highlight of the second term.

Helen Collins dominated while playing for the Bulldogs to boost their numbers, racking up possessions as well as laying tackles on her Rovers teammates.

Celia Piesse stepped up to get the ball moving back in the Rovers’ direction, her on-field leadership showing as she directed play in the middle of the ground, while Bron McGorlick read the play well, collected possessions and blocked Thurgoona’s attack.

In the final term, the game opened up, and Rovers piled on three quick goals, with Megan Quick (in her 40th game) scoring a goal on the run after a great forward entry from Bianca Mulqueen.

Jacinta Findlay’s rebounding run helped Thurgoona break through the middle of the ground and get the ball forward to Tia Charles, who kicked the Bulldogs’ first goal for the game, and fol-

lowed up with their second.

Jess Whitehead scored her second goal before setting up Mikayla Trethowan, who had moved into the forward line. Meanwhile, Amy Hopkins tackled well and kept the ball locked in the forward line.

Rovers finished third on the ladder, and are now anticipating next Sunday’s finals clash with Murray Felines at Lavington.

for the season against Thurgoona saw them outplayed in the first half, as the Bulldogs kicked 6.3 to 0.

To their credit, Rovers fought it out and restricted the Bulldogs to just 2.4 in the second half.

Mak Clark had another brilliant game, both in ruck and when playing in the key centre half forward and centre half back positions, while Mia Johnston, Ash Foubister, Sophie Boyle and Lili Fan all made significant contributions.

The match signalled the end of a season of growth and learning for the side after 16 rounds of football.

Final score: Wangaratta Rovers 0.1 (1) lost to Thurgoona Bulldogs 8.7 (55).

The Hawks’ under 14s celebrated the 30-game milestone for Lucy Kiely, one of the team’s most improved, competitive and dedicated players.

Captain for the day was Ella Pund, who led the girls in her usual upbeat, supportive manner.

The first quarter was one of the Hawks’ best for the season, matching a strong Bulldogs side at each contest, with plenty of tackling, pressure acts, bumps, and looking for teammates to handball to.

Improvement in running, kicking and marking has been excellent throughout the season.

In the final term, some great clearance work from the hard-running mids and wings saw the ball propelled into the forward 50.

All players contributed around the ground when it was their turn to get involved in the contest, in a fantastic finish to the under 14s’ season.

Successful meet for swim club

FUN TIMES: (L-R) Dylan Dickson, Maddie Craven and Olivia Miller had fun at the Victorian Country Short Course Swimming Championships.

WANGARATTA Amateur Swimming Club enjoyed a highly successful competition in Ballarat at the Victorian Country Short Course Swimming Championships on the weekend.

Ten Wangaratta Amateur swimmers travelled to the Goldfields region on July 30 and 31 to swim in 36 events.

Of these events, 31 personal best times were achieved, 24 swims improved their swimmer’s rankings, two new state championships qualifying times and two new national championships qualifying times were achieved, and Gabe Watson came away with two silver medals in the 50m breaststroke and the 100m individual medley.

Tayah Dickson, Henry Lee, Olivia Miller and Gabe Watson all achieved top 10 finishes, and Wangaratta Amateur Swimming Club placed 13th overall of the 35 competing Victorian country clubs.

Congratulations to Maddie Craven, Layla Graham, Dylan Dickson and Tayah Dickson for competing in the Victorian Country Short Course Championships for the first time.

Preparation continues for upcoming significant competitions, with Olivia Miller, Tayah Dickson, Harry Allen, Nina Fortaliza, Gabe Watson, Henry Lee and Cody Ward qualifying for the Victorian Age and Open State Short Course Championships in Melbourne, and Gabe Watson competing in the Australian National Short Course Championships in Sydney in August.

The Wangaratta Amateur Swimming Club team are also looking forward to the Australian Country Long Course Championships in Darwin in October, where they will continue to put into practice the club values of teamwork, friendship and achievement.

Mitchell selected in Victoria’s SEEKING EXPRESSIONS OF emerging players program INTEREST FOR 2023 SEASON THE Wangaratta Chronicle published a story about local cricketers being selected in Cricket Victoria’s emerging players program.

It was reported that four juniors (Jimmy Thewlis, Will Ashton, Darcy Wilson and Sienna Sims) were all picked in their respective age groups when there were in fact five.

Emily Mitchell was selected in Victoria Country’s under 19s program as an underage player making the achievement more impressive.

The winter program will commence on the weekend and will go through until the Premier Cricket season gets underway in October.

Mitchell plays her premier cricket at Plenty Valley and started her journey at City Colts.

THE last two weeks of the O&K home and away season will be thrilling to watch, as a number of teams vie for a coveted spot in finals.

Whorouly’s A grade squad managed to get back into the top six with their 84-26 win over King Valley at Whitfield, a seasonhigh score for the entire A grade competition.

The Lions were in control for the entire match, with shooting pair of Tayla Allen and Katie Ivone packing on goal after goal including an impressive 25-goal second term - Ivone shot 47 goals at 94 per cent accuracy for the match.

“It was an awesome win by our girls in King Valley,” Whorouly cocoach Ebony Allen said.

“It was a game we knew we had to win to try and secure the last spot in finals and everyone just worked so hard to make sure we got the points.

“The team was able to settle in the game by the second quarter and really put the foot down and work hard to get as far ahead as possible.
