WHEN Laura Tucker was diagnosed with brain cancer at the 26-week stage of her pregnancy last year, it was a tumultuous time for the 30-year-old Wangaratta mum-to-be. “My whole world went from the exciting news of ‘I’m going to be a mum’ to ‘Wow, I’m going to be a mum, and I’ve got brain cancer’ which was huge,” she said. Laura was diagnosed with adult medulloblastoma in May last year, after experiencing migraines which were initially attributed to her pregnancy. When the migraines continued, she underwent an MRI at 26 weeks, and was airlifted to the Austin Hospital that night. “I got to the point where I was sensitive to light, I was vomiting, and felt like my head was going to explode, and I had emergency surgery the next day,” she said. Laura was treated by a multi-

disciplinary team including perinatal experts, obstetricians and gynaecologists at the Royal Women’s Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women, with baby Theo delivered by Caesarean at 35 weeks. While thrilled to be cancer-free and at home enjoying being a mum to oneyear-old Theo, the last year has been something of a whirlwind for Laura. As well as Theo’s Caesarean birth under general anaesthetic at 35 weeks, she has undergone two brain surgeries, six weeks of radiation therapy in Bendigo, and ovarian tissue grafting, which was arranged to assist her and husband Mathew with any future family plans. ■ Continued page 2
