DEFENCE lawyer Daniel Sala has told jurors his client did a disservice to himself in a police record of interview following the fatal stabbing of teenager Jaxen Henderson-Gillespie in August 2021.

Zachary Johnson, now 20, is charged with murdering 18-year-old Henderson-Gillespie during an altercation at Vincent Road’s Scout Park on August 21, after meeting with the deceased and another man, Brody Rouse, to complete a drug deal.

Mr Johnson has pleaded not guilty to the charge, with Mr Sala contending his client had not intended to cause serious injury or death when he stabbed the deceased, and had acted in self-defence.

prosecutor Mark Gibson KC said the accused had failed to de-escalate the situation after he was allegedly set upon by the deceased, stabbing him in the neck, despite Mr Johnson telling police in a record of interview he had been aiming for Mr Henderson-Gillespie’s shoulder.

Mr Gibson told jurors Mr Johnson’s intent could have been decided “in the blink of an eye” and said at no point could he have feared suffering serious injury or death at the hands of Mr Henderson-Gillespie and Mr Rouse, who were both unarmed.

He claimed Mr Johnson’s record of interview had glossed over significant details of the altercation.

WORKSAFE accepted 58 injury claims from workers aged 15-19 last year throughout the Hume region, which includes the Wangaratta, Alpine, Benalla, Indigo, Mansfield, Mitchell, Moira, Murrundindi, Shepparton, Strathbogie, Towong, and Wodonga local government areas.

A total of 600 claims from people within that age group were lodged across that state, prompting the recent launch of WorkSafe’s 101 program.

The program is free to all secondary schools and can be used to help prepare students from year nine to 12 enter the workforce safely.

“Our research shows young workers are more likely to accept unsafe work conditions and less likely to raise safety concerns or to report issues when they do occur, due to lack of knowledge, experience and awareness about Occupational Health and Safety,” WorkSafe executive director health and safety Narelle Beer said.

Many schools already have activities and classes on workplace safety, such as Cathedral College in Wangaratta to help educate students before entering the workforce.

Cathedral College career coordinator, Rod Dunbar, said he often used case studies and other methods to teach students about these issues.

Mr Dunbar said he also worked with students to make sure their current workplaces are safe and that employers should be aware of the risks when hiring young people.

“There are particular employ-

ers who hire young people and they have quite a responsibility to make sure that the kids are made aware of any dangers or work issues in workplaces,” he said.

Murder defence questions killer’s intent during stabbing Delivering his own closing address on Friday, Mr Sala said the altercation had taken place in the context of two men barely of age in the midst of a drug deal during the COVID pandemic.

“Mr Johnson was only 18 when this happened - he’s not even 21 now,” he said.

According to Mr Sala, his client had provided an honest account of the incident, but had done himself a disservice by neglecting to expand on

what Mr Sala contended had been a two-on-one fight.

He said from the outset of the interview, Mr Johnson had spoken with homicide detectives honestly, including immediately owning up to attending the park to buy drugs.

He urged jurors to consider the meeting had been a set-up by Mr Rouse and the deceased, after Mr Johnson allegedly had spread rumours Mr Rouse was a ‘crackhead’.

the end of that interview,” he told jurors.

“He’s been set up by two people and panicked, that’s going through his head too.

“He’s sitting there talking about the action of stabbing someone in the neck.”

Mr Sala said his client had repeatedly told family members immediately after the incident

“What is his motivation for intentionally causing serious injury or murdering the deceased,” Mr Sala asked jurors.

“There’s nothing in this that supports that proposition - look at all the evidence immediately thereafter - you cannot be satisfied of that.”

Justice Amanda Fox is expected to present her charge to jurors today, ahead of deliberation and a verdict.

Coins roll in for fundraiser

THAT spare change rattling around your pocket, wallet or car console could make a real difference to families experiencing tough times, through a fundraiser planned by Oxley Primary School this week.

In honour of Imogen Booth (an Oxley Primary student who passed away suddenly in December following a bleed on the brain from an unknown tumour), a memorial day will be held at the school on the final day of term one, Thursday, April 6.

On this day and in the leadup to it, the school is fundraising for Ronald McDonald House, a service the Booth family was able to utilise during Immy’s time in hospital.

Families are being asked to donate any coins they can contribute, and a number of local businesses have also jumped on board to ensure there are plenty of coins at hand to be used to spell out ‘Immy’ on the school’s basketball court.

John Gehrig Wines will provide a box at the winery asking for donations for tasting, and other businesses including Sam Miranda Winery, Oxley Roadhouse, Milawa Bakery Café and Milawa Hotel are helping to gather coins.

The communities of surrounding primary schools Milawa, Carraragarmungee, Whorouly and Wangaratta West will also rattle tins for coin collections.

“Immy was a student with a love of entertaining others, and all things fun and bright,” Oxley Primary School principal Tim Seal said.

“In honour of these qualities, we would like to have the letters of her name as bright as we can get them, so the more coins donated, the brighter the letters will be.”

Immy’s mum, Molly Booth, said the family was looking

forward to taking part in the memorial day.

“It will be bright, colourful and fun,” she said.

Molly said it would be a wonderful way to support Ronald McDonald House Charities, which had been a valuable support for her family while Immy was at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“Especially for us living regionally, if you have kids in hospital, you don’t need to think about finding a hotel,” she said.

“The process was very simple when we needed to use the service, which was just a five minute walk from the hospital.”

The Booth family stayed at Melbourne’s Ronald McDonald House for a week, and Molly said it had been wellequipped with staple pantry items and even offered Christmas lunch, as well as small gifts which brightened the stay for the Booth siblings during a difficult time.

“It’s one of those services you hope you will never have to use, but it meant that any spare moment we had could be spent with Imogen. It meant time, which is priceless,” she said.

Cool final weeks to end our March IT has been notably cooler in Victoria and the Riverina in the final two weeks of March.

This cool spell has resulted in daily maximum temperatures for March falling below normal.

Melbourne this March was cooler than normal for the 10th successive month, the longest stretch of below normal monthly maxima since April 1906 to June 1907.

Many other centres in Victoria have experienced below normal monthly maxima for 10 successive months.

Rain and thunderstorms were a feature in the final week of March in North East Victoria.

Many towns have exceeded their average rainfalls for March and also in Alpine regions where Falls Creek has recorded 233mms to date this month.

Wangaratta, Rutherglen, Wodonga and Benalla have recorded their fourth wetter than average March in succession.

All four towns did previously record five successive wetter than average March from 1899 to 1903 and again from March 1955 to March 1959.

Wangaratta has now had 93.4mms this month, the wettest March since 170.8mms in 2012.

The very hot weather which saw heat records for March in the Central West of NSW did continue right up to last weekend, particularly around Walgett, Collarenebri and Bourke.

It will be the warmest March in 142 years of records with mean maximum temperature for March at 36.1 degree being four degrees above normal at Walgett.

Bourke is on target to record it' hottest March with a mean maximum to date of 36.6 degrees, the hottest since 1903.

Both Walgett and Bourke have had well below average rain this month.

Hoppers light up night with big win over Blues Wednesday, April 3, 2013

Greta’s Scott Glover and Moyhu’s Aaron Cheong shared this contest but it was the Hoppers who clearly won the match, victorious by 122 points.

THE Ovens and King Football League entered foreign territory last Friday with Moyhu hosting Greta at the Norm Minns Oval in the league’s first ever night match.

But the match is unlikely to be remembered as a great spectacle after the Hoppers belted Greta by 122 points in a shock result.

The result wasn’t so much of a shock given the Hoppers’ recent hold over the Blues, however, the way in which they won was.

The first quarter was tightly contested with Greta throwing itself into the contest as the artificial light slowly began to take over as the sun went down.

Moyhu led by 12 points at the first change but despite having a player sent off on the stroke of the break, the Hoppers stamped their authority after quarter time.

They held Greta to just one behind in the second term and blew the lead out to 50 points at the main break after slamming on six goals.

And the second half was just as productive for the Hoppers as they kicked seven

goals in the third term and eight in the last to complete a stunning 24.17 (161) to 6.3 (39) win.

Nathan Waite was everywhere for the Hoppers kicking seven goals from 29 touches while Jeremy Wilson and Peter Sullivan both kicked bags of five.

Aaron Cheong, Jaimon McGeehan, Jim Gales and Ed Cartledge also starred for the Hoppers while Scott Glover and Dan McLaughlin battled against the odds for the Blues.

The other two matches of the round were just as onesided with Milawa crushing Bonnie Doon by 177 points on Good Friday while King Valley handed Benalla All Blacks a 174-point loss.

Brent Newton kicked eight goals in a best on ground performance for Milawa while Russell Whyllie announced his senior comeback with seven goals in the Roos’ big win.

UPWARDS of 250kg of chocolate will be spread across Wangaratta’s Barr two oval this week, as part of a major fundraising effort for local health providers.

Set to take place this Thursday, April 6, the event will see well over 33,000 Easter eggs strewn across the field, set to be collected by more than 600 local children.

Overseeing the event’s fifth iteration, OBrien Real Estate Joyce marketing manager Rebecca Joyce said staff were hoping to build on the event’s previous success.

“We’re sitting at 611 (registered children) at the moment, so we’re expecting that to grow a little more,” she said.

“They’re pretty comparable to last year’s numbers - I think we had 673 register last year and then I think we had just over 700 in actual attendance on the day for the kids.

“We’ve got 260kgs (of chocolate) which is 33,500 eggs.”

LOCAL residents are being urged to remain vigilant through the final month of the 2022/23 mosquito season, after a case of Murray Valley encephalitis was identified in the Rural City of Wangaratta last month.

A mosquito trapped in the Wangaratta local government area (LGA) on March 15 formally returned a positive reading for the virus.

In humans, the mosquito-borne virus often does not present with any symptoms, and most infected individuals make a full recovery, however, in severe cases, the infection can lead to serious disease, brain damage, and death.

So far this year, four cases of Murray Valley encephalitis have been identified in humans statewide, claiming three lives.

According to acting deputy chief health officer, Dr Mihaela Ivan, people in northern Victoria, particular those in inland riverine regions, were at higher risk of infection and should take measures to protect against mosquito bites.

Dr Ivan said symptoms could include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle aches, and urged clinicians to test for both Murray Valley and Japanese encephalitis in patients who present with a compatible illness.

To avoid mosquito bites, residents and visitors to the region should wear an appropriate mosquito repellent at all times when outdoors, and avoid spending time outdoors at dusk and dawn as much as possible.

Ms Joyce said supporting the local health effort had been a key focus of the event in recent years.

“It’s potentially a service that we’ll all need, so it’s nice to be able to give back locally,” she said.

“We do know there are quite a few events happen-

ing around the region for Good Friday, so that’s why we were trying to focus locally, just to share it around a little bit.”

Outside of the major Easter egg hunt, set to commence at 6pm, the event will feature a host of local entertainment.

“The event starts and 4pm and the hunt itself

will off at 6pm, and we’ve got lots of entertainment for the kids, and barbecues and pizza trucks and chip vans and coffee vans and sweet treats,” Ms Joyce said.

“We’ve got the local dance studio Pulsate Dance Force doing some dancing for us to entertain us while we’re doing the egg drop itself.

Cultural trail blocked off following suspicious fire

By RYAN MALCOLM POLICE officers from Wangaratta’s Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) are investigating a “fire of suspicious circumstances”, after a tree believed to have cultural significance was set alight on Friday morning.

Fire Rescue Victoria and CFA members were called to the Bullawah Cultural Trail near Northern Beach-

es around 7am, following reports of a tree alight in the vicinity of the trail.

Detective Senior Constable Timothy Doyle said police were appealing for members of the public in the area between 6.30am and 7.30am to come forward with information, after a single tree was set alight from the base.

He said the tree was still standing, and noted talks

were ongoing between Parks Victoria and the local council as to whether the tree would need to be felled for safety.

The trail was temporarily closed on Friday morning as firefighters assessed the scene.

Gold coins show community spirit IT’S hard to argue there’s a more important time for local community spirit to shine through than around the Easter break.

Often a busy period for many, with the commencement of the school holidays signaling a mass influx of visitors to and from the region, the Easter break has also become synonymous with fundraising efforts for children facing serious health issues.

The CFA’s involvement with the Good Friday appeal is well–known, and local firefighters will be out in force on their trucks later this week to rattle tins and collect generous donations to support the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

An event at Eldorado’s McEvoy Tavern will aim to raise upwards of $20,000 for the Good Friday Appeal, while a major Easter egg hunt at Wangaratta’s Barr Reserve will directly benefit Northeast Health Wangaratta’s paediatric ward, supporting the purchase of play therapy equipment.

Today’s page three story speaks to the memory of Oxley Primary student Imogen Booth, who sadly passed away late last year in sudden circumstances.

Imogen had a resounding impact on the lives of many in the local community, and it’s excellent to see so many local businesses and residents, as well as members of her school, fundraising for an initiative which provided Imogen’s family so much assistance during her time in hospital.

The work these programs do to put smiles on sick children’s faces and ease the stress on families is remarkable, and couldn’t be done as comprehensively without the support and empathy of community members.

Solar savings not showing for locals

HAVING read Gabriel Stecher’s letter on solar (Wangaratta Chronicle, March 29); he wrote in the third paragraph: “We chose to stay on the grid both as insurance (which we never use) and a little extra free income, miserable as the feed in tariff is.

I ask the question; How did you get power when the solar wasn‘t working but you never use the grid?; if you have a battery, you didn‘t mention it.

Generating 12500kwh and only using 5700kwh leaves a surplus of 6800kwh and at a miserable rate for export, say 0.10cents, would give you $680 less daily charge of roughly $1.10 which totals $401.50 leaving a credit of $278.50.

You mentioned you accumulated a $1000 surplus over the year.

I have had solar panels for 10 years; my electricity bills present the true facts and if what you have written tells your whole story, well done.

Regional fare cap to transform travel The Andrews Labor Government is transforming the way Victorians travel across the state, with the regional fare cap now in effect to make regional public transport fares fair.

The cost of a daily ticket on the entire regional Victorian network is now capped at the same prices as metropolitan daily fares – currently $9.20 for a full fare or $4.60 for a concession. On a weekend or public holiday, daily fares are capped at $6.70 and currently just $3.35 for concession.

That means more money in regional Victorians’ pockets, and more opportunities for families in Melbourne and visitors to the state to explore everything Victoria has to offer. It also ensures families living in rural and regional Victoria can visit loved ones, and access health and education services in other regional cities and in Melbourne.

For those who take long–distance V/Line journeys, the regional fare cap can save people more than $40 for each and every one–way journey on the regional public transport network.

The fare cap applies to all PTV regional buses, town buses and V/Line trains and coaches.

Feedback will help to inform rural solar project MEADOW Creek Solar Farm Pty Ltd says community feedback from two public ‘drop-in’ sessions it held at Milawa last month will help inform the project design and planning.

Company project development manager Cameron Munro said the sessions had a good turnout, with residents able to to meet and speak directly with members of the project team.

“During the session we shared early concept designs, and invited questions and feedback on the proposal... overall the community is supportive of renewable energy,” he said.

“We heard concerns around use of agricultural land, fire risk mitigations, and potential impacts to native vegetation, waterways and visual amenity, and our technical assessments will need to address these.

“Over the next few months we’ll progress our technical assessments and prepare our planning application.

“When the planning application is on public notice there will be another opportunity for the community to share their views on the project to be considered by the minister for planning.”

The Meadow Creek Solar Farm is a proposed renewable energy development located south-east of Wangaratta.

The site could host up to 330MW of renewable energy and a 250MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

Members of the Meadow Creek Agricultural Community Action Group were also out in force to provide information on their opposition to the project.

Check in on your skin with free visit WHILE we may be starting to cover up as the weather grows cooler, now is still a great time to think about how exposure to the sun over summer may have affected our skin.

To help with this, the Lions Club of Wangaratta is now taking bookings for free appointments at a mobile skin check and awareness unit which is set to roll into the rural city in early May. A joint project with the Lions V Districts Cancer Foundation, the van’s Wangaratta visit has been supported by

a $2100 Rural City of Wangaratta community grant.

The unit will be stationed at Lions Park in Batchelors Green (adjacent to the Wangaratta Artists Society studio) on the weekend of May 6 and 7.

Three trained volunteer dermoscopists (skin screeners) will be on duty over the two days, with bookings available between 9am and 3.15pm.

The unit will be a valuable resource for local people to access not only the skin check but also timely infor-

mation about skin care and self–checking techniques.

Early detection of skin lesions potentially saves lives, so the skin check and awareness unit offers locals an important reminder of the need to take care of their skin.

Following the skin check, visitors will be issued with a referral to their GP if there are any suspect spots or lesions.

The unit is not a medical clinic, so diagnosis or treatment requirements are not discussed.

It simply provides the skin check and alerts visitors to skin lesions that require further checking and attention, so is a great first step in ensuring urgent needs are addressed.

The air–conditioned van has three fully–equipped screening rooms and an entry foyer, as well as a disabled lift and entry at the rear.

Local poetry book sales to benefit UNHCR

LOCAL writer, poet, celebrant, PhD and farmer Dr Roxanne Bodsworth is holding an online book launch and poetry reading from her new book The Book of Hours this evening.

Dr Bodsworth’s new work are poems for the February 2023 earthquake survivors in Turkiye (Turkey) and Syria.

“I guess I wrote it because I was so inspired by the stories of rescue and survival and the sheer resilience of the human spirit in times of unimaginable loss and trauma, but felt powerless to do anything but I’m a storyteller and a poet so I thought that was the thing that I could do,” Dr Bodsworth said.

“Life is pretty chaotic but I wanted to get this out before people had forgotten all about it, and they seemed like stories that shouldn’t just be allowed to disappear into the next news sensation.”

At 4.17am on February 6 2023, the countdown began in the search for survivors of the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria.

Each hour that passed diminished the chances of finding any more survivors and yet the rescuers kept finding people alive, young, old, and in-between.

There are poems to be found in the stories of those who survived, those that searched for them, those that rescued them, those who waited for their return, those still waiting.

Their lives are to be celebrated as much as the lives that were lost are to be grieved.

Survival brings its own challenges as they stand among the rubble and detritus of the lives they had built and now must build again.

These poems gather together many of these stories and pay tribute to the people to whom they belong.

Perhaps the poems may go some way to helping these people reconstruct their lives, to continue the act of survival in a world destroyed.

All proceeds will be donated to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist the more than 30,000 people displaced by this disaster.

Dr Bodsworth is donating the cost of production of the book while Kathy Allan from Purple Possum Designs has donated her skill and time as well.

Poet and social justice advocate Paola Bilbrough will be the guest speaker during the launch.

Local poet and author Frank Prem wrote the following review:

Names matter.

RTB (Roxanne Bodsworth) has named the calamity and devastation of earthquake.

Its name is Khalil.

Its name is Afraa and it is Gazwal, and Zeligha and Ali. So real are these poems of the quake and its aftermath that the dust still swirls.

It has the taste in it of death and of despair.

And hope.

The Book of Hours is a collection, not just of disaster, but of survival and hope bitter hope - for a future that exists when a life is spared here, or a child is found new-born under the rubble, there.

RTB has captured the poetry of people speaking their experience and their shock, sorrow and grief in their own voices.

This is a beautiful and terrible collection of verse.

I commend it, wholeheartedly.

Exclusive backstage tour for the Youthies

FOR the first time ever, the CDP theatre production company opened their national tour at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre (WPACC) last week with a stage production of David Walliams’ Mr Stink.

Wangaratta Players Youth Group (Youthies) were given an exclusive backstage look, and CDP producer, Suzie Franke, told them everything there was to know about putting a tour show together, from script to stage, and said she was excited to open at the WPACC last Thursday.

“It’s terrific to be able to be touring shows into regional areas,” she said.

The Youthies asked Ms Franke many questions, from what her role as producer entails to how conflicts between actors are dealt with.

She said for their current show, they haven’t had trouble with conflicts between cast and crew and have employed a touring psychologist, who also understands the arts, to support the cast and crew.

As for her job as producer, Ms Franke said she essen-

“Producing requires people skills and you also need to be able to keep people going and motivated and doing their job,” she said.

Ms Franke also said while

they started getting ready at WPACC three days in advance, normally bumpins - where they get all the set, lighting, costumes and props into the theatre and performance ready - is typically only four hours when on tour.

Ben Fletcher, the tech-

nical team leader at the WPACC, said bump-in and bump-out can even be on the same day.

“Very often for a kids show it might be the same day, which can mean a 12 to 16 hour day for a venue technician,” he said.

Youthies to see the set on stage before a backstage tour where they were introduced to ‘Duchess the dog’ and saw other props from the show.

CDP has presented performances at the WPACC before and Mr Fletcher said they were excited to have

“They’re one of our favourite tour companies because their crews are always really good to work with, their set design and their show design is really thorough, and their documentation and their information are very easy to follow,” he said.

“Every time they come here, we are pretty much guaranteed to fill out auditorium full of schools and full of kids.”

Lexi Aivaliotis, one of Youthies mentors, said some of the kids from the group went to see the performance on Thursday and were grateful for the behind the scene experience they had earlier in the week.

“They had a lot of fun I think they really enjoyed seeing how a professional show was run,” she said.

“We’re super thankful to WPACC and CDP for the opportunity and that we’d love to do it again in the future.”

Paris entertains Terrace guests

ST JOHN’S Terrace had the privilege of hosting former Wangaratta resident and renowned entertainer Paris Zachariou last Thursday.

Around 125 guests were entertained by the talented singer, who has worked the stage with Oprah Winfrey, and dazzled large audiences at the Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne.

The next musical afternoon on October 12 will feature local entertainer Jade Gibson, who is well known for her country and western music, enhanced by 12 months in Nashville plying her trade.

Grants will support North East projects WANGARATTA and other North East communities will share in the latest round of grants from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal.

Australia-wide, FRRR is providing $2,309,331 to 176 community projects across remote, rural and regional Australia as part of its Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) program.

A grant of $10,000 to Ardoch Limited will facilitate the development of a creative arts program in Wangaratta to help support the mental health and wellbeing of children impacted by bushfires.

Myrtleford Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc will receive $25,000 to help purchase a vehicle to provide a mobile health and wellbeing service to support community recovery from bushfires.

Another $25,000 has been awarded to Startup Shakeup

Ltd to help strengthen community connections in Bright through an IT training initiative, while $8430 will support craft and skills workshops in Bright.

In Yackandandah, a grant of $9970 will be used by Indigo Valley Landcare Group Inc to work with Duduroa Dhargal Aboriginal Corporation to share cultural geography knowledge with Landcare groups and the wider community.

Stanley Athenaeum has also been granted $4862 to bolster its facilities.

Mansfield projects also fared well, with $10,000 to the Mansfield Historical Society to restore local historical artefacts; $9500 to Up2Us Landcare Alliance to help provide training and bolster leadership skills for Landcare members; and $9859 to the Arts Council of Mansfield for ugprades to a community facility to be a fit-for-purpose arts activity centre.

Stroke survivor shares epic mission

By CHLOE JAENICKE STROKE survivor Tommy Quick had some inspiring words of wisdom for Wangaratta High School students on Friday, as had pedalled his sit down bike into the Phillipson Street campus for a break on his 9000km charity ride.

Mr Quick spoke to students about his life experiences, sharing how he sur-

vived a stroke at age 12 which impacted him physically and affected his communication.

“I essentially let them know that life is precious,” he said.

While it is only early days on Mr Quick’s 9000km ride across Victoria to raise money for the Stroke Foundation, he said everything was going smoothly.

He first attempted this

ride back in 2021 but it came to a sudden stop after he was hit by a car 3638km into the epic ride.

“Preparations were much calmer than in 2021 when we had to escape Victoria due to lockdown,” he said.

“This time I’m much more relaxed.”

Mr Quick said he wants to educate Australians about stroke, particular-

ly young people.

According to the Stroke Foundation, in the federal electorate of Indi, which includes Wangaratta, there are 3355 people living with stroke and in Australia around 600 children have a stroke each year.

Cropping preparations are promising after good falls

By KURT HICKLING RECENT rainfall has set up favourable conditions for local farmers to commence ground work on paddocks in preparation to sow their annual winter crops.

Doug James, who has lived on his ‘Viewbank’ sheep property at Boweya and cropped in the Bungeet area for the past 53 years, remained optimistic on Friday that preparations can now go ahead, particularly after falls in the final week of March.

“The autumn period is looking very promising with early rain falling which is a positive because we usually see the better rainfall in May,” he said.

“That early rain puts us ahead of schedule providing we see follow up rain.

“We have already commenced soil and ground preparations by burning and turning the soil and adding lime so sowing can commence.

“The recent rain has also been great as new grass is also growing which helps our animal grazing property.

“Further burning and direct drilling will commence in two weeks time.

“We have had patchy rain

fall here receiving around 15mm (last week) where other areas have recorded 50mm.”

Doug plans to commence sowing on Anzac Day, which is the calendar date most farmers rely on, rather than how much rain has been received.

Mid-April is often the latest period that seeds will be sown.

“The weather plays a critical role in cropping so we are not only governed by the weather, but also trusting our personal ex-

“Things will begin to ramp up with sowing come Anzac Day, however in the meantime it’s all about preparation, planning and timing with lime and fertilisers being added before the sowing period,along with our sheep which will commence lambing in mid-April which is another commitment we need to focus on.”

Burn-offs set to increase as restricitons are lifted WITH the Fire Danger Period (FDP) finishing at 1am this morning in CFA’s District 22 and 23, which includes the Rural City of Wangaratta, burn-offs are expected to increase over coming weeks, The CFA has said it still expects the grassfire risk to remain across the state in the coming months and is urging landowners to remain alert and prepared, and check that local conditions are safe before undertaking any burn-offs.

It is reminding landholders that they must register burn–offs, check the weather forecast and follow local council laws and regulations, and if possible notify neighbours of the burn.

“Registering your burn– off ensures that if smoke or fire is reported, the incident is crosschecked with our register, which prevents firefighters from unnecessarily responding,” a CFA spokesperson said.

Landowners are also being reminded to have a fire break and sufficient equipment and water to stop fire spreading.

Deeper look at nitrogen loss in flooded soils

By TANYA DOBRIJEVIC, Agriculture Victoria Flood Recovery Officer AS flood waters recede, it’s natural to want to get straight back to business as usual.

While it can be easy to see the damage done above ground, losses that lie beneath the soil can sometimes be overlooked.

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth.

To be utilised by plants, soil microorganisms must convert nitrogen into forms that are able to be taken up by the roots.

However, in some forms, nitrogen can be very mobile in the soil and is prone to being lost, particularly in very wet or waterlogged conditions.

The way in which nitrogen is lost in a flood depends on soil type and how long the soil remains saturated.

Sandy textured soils generally have limited nutrient holding capacity.

Nitrogen is prone to leaching in sandy soils as water flows through the more porous structure.

This soil type can commonly display nitrogen deficiencies and is made worse in wet conditions following flooding or heavy rains, with nitrogen flushed below the root zone and unavailable to plants.

Clay and loam soils have higher nutrient holding capacities in

comparison to sand.

However, these soils can limit deep drainage and become waterlogged in wet conditions.

Sand over clay subsoil can also become waterlogged in floods.

Nitrogen in the form of nitrate (NO3) is most prone to leaching.

Nitrate nitrogen losses from leaching can be significant where inorganic fertilisers, particularly those containing nitrate, have been applied.

Losses can also be high in spring as the soil warms up, increasing soil microbial activity and decomposition of plant residues and soil organic matter which releases nitrate (mineralisation).

With extended periods of waterlogging, oxygen availability to the soil is restricted and nitrogen may be depleted through the process of denitrification.

Aerobic microorganisms are responsible for nitrogen conversion but cannot survive without oxygen.

Consequently, in waterlogged conditions soil nitrogen is converted by anaerobic bacteria (microbes that don’t need oxygen) into its gas forms, which are released from the soil and no longer available for plant uptake.

The longer the soil is waterlogged, the greater the poten-

tial loss of nitrogen from the soil profile.

Losses can begin to occur if soil is waterlogged for more than two days and become significant after more than a week of waterlogging.

Nitrogen losses through denitrification will also be higher in soils that are high in soil organic matter, nitrogen and reduced oxygen.

Denitrification is driven by soil microorganisms, with warm temperature resulting in more rapid nitrogen losses to the atmosphere.

Soil testing close to when you plan to sow crops and pastures will help determine nitrogen fertility levels.

Separate soils samples should be taken in previously flooded and non-flood affected areas for comparison.

Deep soil testing (to 60cm) can indicate if nitrogen has been leached deeper in the soil profile, but still within the root zone and available for plant uptake.

Knowing the soil type or types you have on your property may assist you in identifying the possible impacts on nutrient availability caused by flooding and help with target zones to conduct soil tests.

A soil test will be able to provide you with an overview of your soil fertility and indicate whether additional fertiliser applications are required.

Giving evidence at the ongoing murder trial of Zachary Johnson on Friday, Corey Smith said he had been driving west along Vincent Road with his son when a thick-set man ran

in front of his vehicle from Ryan Avenue towards two men who appeared to be wrestling with each other in the park.

Mr Johnson is alleged to have fatally stabbed fellow teenager Jaxen Henderson-Gillespie during an altercation at Scout Park on August 21, 2021, with prosecutors arguing Mr Johnson had acted with

intent to cause serious injury or death.

Defence counsel Daniel Sala has reasoned Mr Johnson acted in selfdefence, after he told police he was allegedly set upon by the deceased and another male.

Mr Smith said he had travelled a further 50 metres down the road before making a u-turn, slowing to 30kph

as he allegedly saw one man lying down with two either side, one of whom was the man who had run in front of his car, and said he was unsure whether an argument or fight had taken place.

Having continued along Vincent Road east, Mr Smith said he had dropped his son at a Crisp Street address before returning along Vincent Road, when

he noticed an ambulance, police and a small group of onlookers had gathered at the park.

Questioned by crown prosecutor Mark Gibson KC, Mr Smith said he had been unable to see the hands of the parties as they kneeled over the prone man.

He said the two men wrestling had been mere metres away from a green

fenceline separating the park from 7 Vincent Road when he first passed, and all three had been huddled in the same spot following the u-turn.

Mr Sala said the alleged incident had been a “dynamic situation,” which during a preliminary hearing last year, Mr Smith had likened to a football fight.

Teens look to the future with uni

WANGARATTA High School year 12 graduates Kayla Fisher and Amy Henderson were among hundreds of local students, and tens of thousands around the state, who received their first round university offers yesterday.

The pair are both interested in humanitarian work and development, and were offered their first choice course at their chosen universities.

Kayla, 17, has been offered a

double degree in Arts and Public Policy with a major in third-world development at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“I was happy with my ATAR score even if I thought I could do better but it’s been a tough year,” Kayla said.

“It was difficult not having feedback from classmates because I didn’t know if I was doing okay or needed to improve.

“But, I got there in the end and am

looking forward to the next step.”

Amy, 18, will be doing occupational therapy at Deakin but hopes to branch into humanitarian work in third world countries.

“I had hoped for a higher ATAR but I didn’t need one, I’m pretty happy with how I went,” Amy said.

“Last year I really missed out on having the balance of sport and social aspects of school which really help me get through the study aspect.

“I’ll jump straight in this year I think because my initial plans to have a gap year and travel aren’t likely now.

Eldorado’s depth was on full display on Saturday, with the brigade’s B squad also taking home third in the division three aggregate competition.

Chiltern’s Trinity Williams was the outstanding female of the championships, securing first in the female firefighter sprint, while Springhurst’s Lachlan Lewis finished second

in the male iteration.

In junior competition, Springhurst brigade showcased its host of youth talent on Sunday, taking home aggregate third in the 11-15 years competition as Matilda Lewis finished second for the brigade in the 11-15 years female junior sprint.

Eldorado’s Lily Gibbs finished a close third in the same event, while Gapsted’s Tom Griffiths was crowned 1st in the 11-13 years male competition.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said the state championships were always a highlight of the CFA calendar for all involved.

“The state championships are a big part of CFA’s volunteer culture, and promotes the important values of teamwork and respect, as well as engaging our members in some friendly competition with like-minded competitors,” he said.

Wangaratta cyclists impress on big stage THE Wangaratta Cycling Club has enjoyed an exciting month with both Reuben Smith and Riley Corke competing on national and Oceania stages.

Smith competed for Victoria at the AusCycling Track National Championships at the Anna Mears Stadium in Brisbane, while Corke rode in the Oceania Continental Championships - cross-country at Mount Cotton (QLD).

Smith’s Victorian team was the most successful at the championships, while he also picked up a bronze medal in the team sprint.

Corke excelled in the u23 division at the Oceania Championships, finishing seventh as an 18-year-old in a time of 1:15:58.42, behind winner Ethan Rose (1:10:45.34).

His seventh place finish comes after coming third at the XCO National Championships in Thredbo earlier in March.

“Riley did really well to ride the way he did in the u23’s as an 18-yearold,” Paul Somerville said.

“To come third at nationals is an exceptional effort coming off year 12 exams where he proba-

bly hasn’t done as much training as he normally would.”

Corke said he was stoked with his efforts at nationals.

“I had a blast at XCO National Championships up in Thredbo,” Corke said.

“I headed up there with low expectations due to a crash several weeks prior in Canberra.

“Surprisingly my form was good, producing a third place in the XCC on the Saturday and fourth in the main XCO race on Sunday.

“I’m super happy with my performance since it is my first year in U23.”

Naish no longer with Magpies PATRICK Naish named Wangaratta as his home club when free of VFL commitments with Box Hill but that won’t be the case anymore.

Naish has quit the VFL and will play at Old Ivanhoe full-time in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

The midfielder played 20 games at Richmond and West Coast from 2018-2022 but was delisted from the Eagles last September.

He joined VFL club Box Hill and nominated Wangaratta as his second club, where his father Chris started his career, before playing 143 games at Richmond, followed by 18 at Port Adelaide over a decade-long career.

However, Naish has elected to join the VAFA Premier C club, which is attached to his former school.

IN a round full of surprising results at the weekend, one of the biggest upsets came from Friendlies Oval in Benalla, where reigning premiers All Blacks were handed a 43-point loss at the hands of Whorouly.

A surging second and third quarter spelled defeat for the Panthers, with the Lions coming home winners 14.12 (96) to 8.5 (53).

After a small ceremony before the match saw the All Blacks raise the second of their two premiership flags from last year, the two sides got stuck into the contest, with two points separating them by quarter time.

The Lions exploded through the second term, working the ball cleanly through the middle of the ground and avoiding Friendlies Oval’s expansive wings to deliver into their forward line.

Whorouly managed 10 scoring shots in the second term to Benalla’s three to head into the long break four goals up.

Benalla fought hard after half-time but

couldn’t manage a goal for the entire quarter, while the Lions extended their lead to 40 points.

Both sides ran out the game well, with some minor cramping, but the Lions were too good by the final siren.

Kyle Collison impressed for the All Blacks in the midfield, while Whorouly’s Jake Riley and Darcy O’Shannessy helped win the game for their side with their run.

Whorouly coach Riley Calvene said the ball movement from his side, especially out of the back line, really helped run over Benalla.

“Our ball movement was quite slick, we used the ball quite well - Benalla bombed a lot to their forward 50 and we were able to pick them off, rebound it and beat them back the other way,” he said.

“Last year we got caught trying to go too wide, so we knew we needed to own the corridor and attack through there.

“Our midfield was able to put a lot of pressure onto their midfielders, and the likes of Paul Glanville, Max Grant and Darcy

O’Shannessy read the ball quite well in the air, then we were able to have Will Allen and Sam Piazza run the ball out of our back half.”

All Blacks’ coach Nich Spencer said the squad who took to the field was different from the flag-winning group.

“It’s a new team this year with a lot of guys that are still under 50 senior games so we will have some really good quarters and some poor quarters but I’m excited for the future of our group,” he said.

“We had a lapse in the second which unfortunately just put us a bit far behind.

“It was good to see fight in the boys though, we could have easily put the cue in the rack and rolled over in the last quarter but we didn’t stop until the final siren.”

It was a closer match in the reserves, with Benalla holding on to take the win 9.8 (62) to the Lions’ 10.1 (61).

A dominant first term from the Panthers was enough to hold back a charging and fired up Whorouly outfit.

“The boys were as clean as we’ve been for a while, and that’s how we’ve been training.

“To bring it with a bit of pressure of game day, it was really pleasing to see they could still do that.”

Bell said a group of experienced and younger players really stepped up on the night, giving the Hoppers a much-needed win.

“There are some kids that were already out there at the club when I got there who have really stood up,” he said.

“They’re only 22 years old but they’ve really grown up and matured and taken up leadership at the club.

“Charlie West led from the front in the middle as the captain, he led all day and didn’t give in.

“Jett Roberts, who only signed up last week, was best on ground - he’s just a hard-edged kid, doesn’t give up.

“You could see it in the way they sang the song, they’ve only sung it four times in three years, so they’re pretty happy to win one at the start of the year, I could see it in their eyes.”

North Wangaratta coach Steve Manning said his side fought hard

throughout the match.

“We were able to equalise around the ground in the second quarter and got ourselves back into the contest,” he said.

“We felt at half time if we kept that intensity at the contest we could wear them down in the second half.

“But full credit to Moyhu, they got the first goal and continued to run and spread from the contest and skipped away to a three goal lead that we just couldn’t peg back in the end.

“My boys fought it out to the end and we’ll trouble plenty of teams this year - the night was a terrific night and it was a pleasure to be involved in.”

In other matches, King Valley and Greta dispatched their opponents by more than 100 points, with the Blues downing the Bats 24.14 (158) to 2.5 (17), and the Roos taking down Tarrawingee 19.18 (132) to 2.6 (18).

Milawa proved they’d be a side to watch out for with a 36-point win over Bright at home, while reigning premiers Benalla All Blacks were stunned by Whorouly, with the Lions taking the win 14.12 (96) to 8.5 (53).
