DEFENCE lawyer Daniel Sala has told jurors his client did a disservice to himself in a police record of interview following the fatal stabbing of teenager Jaxen Henderson-Gillespie in August 2021. Zachary Johnson, now 20, is charged with murdering 18-year-old Henderson-Gillespie during an altercation at Vincent Road’s Scout Park on August 21, after meeting with the deceased and another man, Brody Rouse, to complete a drug deal. Mr Johnson has pleaded not guilty to the charge, with Mr Sala contending his client had not intended to cause serious injury or death when he stabbed the deceased, and had acted in self-defence. prosecutor Mark Gibson KC said the accused had failed to de-escalate the situation after he was allegedly set upon by the deceased, stabbing him in the neck, despite Mr Johnson telling police in a record of interview he had been aiming for Mr Henderson-Gillespie’s shoulder. Mr Gibson told jurors Mr Johnson’s intent could have been decided “in the blink of an eye” and said at no point could he have feared suffering serious injury or death at the hands of Mr Henderson-Gillespie and Mr Rouse, who were both unarmed.
