Easing floods A $4 million upgrade to drainage at Wangaratta’s Newman Street hopes to aid further business growth in one of the city’s key industrial areas. private land would entice prospective commercial enterprises. Cr Rees said works will improve Newman Street with kerb, channel and drainage because the area
currently floods quite regularly after a small downpour. He said there will be drainage areas out the back of the council depot which will take all the water away from the street. “It will encourage existing business owners to really tidy up their properties because it is a main link in Wangaratta and it has
been downgraded for a long time,” Cr Rees said. “With the expansion of the existing Bunnings building as well, it will really tidy up the situation.” There is still private land on Newman Street owned by the Judd Group and Cr Rees said this could offer more scope for development in the area. “Industrial land is super
tight at the moment so hopefully private land in the street will be developed by existing or incoming businesses,” he said. Council this week awarded the contract to Hill’s Civil Contracting to carry out kerb and channel works, a retarding basin in Avian Park and the installation of a pump station. Works will start in
