WORK is being done to explore the development of social housing on land where the former Ovens College was located as part of a guaranteed $20 million minimum under the Big Housing Build fund. Homes Victoria confirmed that it is working with Wangaratta council on delivery options for social and affordable housing on the council–owned land.

A Home Victoria spokesperson said options include partnering with a Community Housing Organisation to develop projects on council–owned land. “Community housing

providers are key delivery partners in the Big Housing Build and can work with local governments to develop projects and seek funding for these through Big Housing Build funding streams,” the spokesperson said. “The landmark Big Housing Build guarantees at least $20 million will be invested in social and affordable housing in Wangaratta.”

Council director of development services, Stephen Swart, said since purchasing the former Ovens College site council has sought to facilitate its development for community purposes. He said over time the site has been subdivided with sections currently being used by the Country Fire Authority, State Emergency Services, and Department of

Health and Human Services‘ recently opened 30–bed drug rehabilitation centre. “One part of the site remains undeveloped, and council continues to look for opportunities for this land to also be developed to the benefit of the community,” Mr Swart said. “This includes working with the State Government and other organisations to consider options for social

and affordable housing to be established on the land, however, at this stage no preferred development option has been decided on. “There is a clear need for social and affordable housing in Wangaratta and this centrally located site would be a good location for this type of housing with access to services and facilities.” ■ Continued page 2
