A positive start to the 2022 school year across the board AFTER an interrupted 2020 and 2021, students and teachers are delighted at being back onsite for the start of the 2022 school year.

There are plenty of new buildings, playgrounds and yard works underway or in the pipeline for the remainder of this year and, for some, into next year.

Literacy and numeracy are high on the agenda from Foundation and Prep classes through to senior years with many schools putting new programs in place or building on ones which have come about due to the pandemic.

Play-based learning and taking advantage of students being able to get out into our picturesque natural environment to learn has also become a high priority.

Children are being encouraged to join sports teams, community groups and other after school activities to reignite a sense of community and camaradarie and to keep them physically healthy and socially stimulated.

Student mental health and wellbeing also continues to be a focus at schools as children re-learn to attend classes with school mates rather than family members and what is expected of them during lessons. #ŧŶ͂şĝŠƠ͂ʼnŠ͂ǰ͂ŶźƁ͂ŧŶ͂źĵīŧŠı͂ŁŶĝıĵźˮ͂Ɓņʼnź͂ ƚʼnřř͂Īĵ͂ƁņĵʼnŶ͂ǰ͂ŶźƁ͂řŧŠŁĵŶ̘ƁĵŶş͂ƁĝźƁĵ͂ŧŀ͂ classroom learning and social skills since attending kindergarten pre-pandemic.

The challenges, lessons and social disconnectedness we have all felt in the past two years is not entirely over just yet,

however the future is looking positive and a more settled school year is expected.

School themes embrace the past and the future - taking lessons from what we have been through while looking to empower our future leaders.

Leadership, compassion, acknowledgement,

independence and engagement are not just words anymore, but rather keywords being taken to heart by students, teachers and whole school communities.

Strengthening ties between home and school has never been more evident (and important) than now and support for

parents, students and teachers are at the forefront of masterplans taking shape.

As our school communities take on term one, we look forward to sharing their news and achievements in our term two education feature, and as they arise throughout the year.

Outdoor Education program is underway at Yarrunga Primary YARRUNGA Primary School are fortunate to have the expertise of Faith Atcheson leading their Outdoor Education program in 2022.

Faith is taking students in prep to grade six to enjoy nature play, creativity and to connect to the outdoors.

Younger students will explore the creek and bush next to the school while older students will go bush to a special hidden property in Eldorado.

Students are looking forward to the challenges and teamwork of setting up a base camp which includes ensuring their shelters are waterproof using natural clay from the base of the stream.

Early structures haven’t kept many of the students dry so far, so further investigation and hands-on practising is needed to improve the situation. xĝŶŶƅŠŁĝ͂TŶʼnşĝŶƠ͂[īņŧŧř͂źƁĝǥ͂​͂ĝŶĵ͂ĝřźŧ͂ŶĵʼnƁĵŶĝƁʼnŠŁ͂ the school values: Be a Learner; Be Responsible; Be Respectful.

Delving into what each value means and how students can embrace each one every day ensures a harmonious school all working towards the same goal, along with giving the school community a sense of pride and a togetherness.

Also in term one, the students are looking forward to a visit from an author and illustrator who uses recycled materials to create her art.

There will be an opportunity for the children to create their own masterpieces from old books, ĪŶŧīņƅŶĵźˮ͂ŁʼnŀƁ͂ƚŶĝųųʼnŠŁˮ͂ųĝƁƁĵŶŠĵı͂īĝŶıĪŧĝŶı͂īŧǥ͂ĵĵ͂ cups, patterned paper and cardboard and teaching źƁĝǥ͂​͂ĝŠı͂ƁņĵʼnŶ͂ŁƅĵźƁ͂ĝŶĵ͂řŧŧŗʼnŠŁ͂ŀŧŶƚĝŶı͂Ɓŧ͂źĵĵʼnŠŁ͂ what they come up with.

Galen believes in creating a learning environment that enables its community members to engage in enriching activities that can improve individual learning experience beyond academic achievements.

The student leadership structure aims to provide a systematic and engaging approach to student leadership development to ensure better outcomes for students while embracing their house culture system and College FIRST values Faith, Integrity, Respect, Self and Team.

The year 12 cohort provides leadership across a number of areas including cocaptains, vice captains and house captain with the role of this group to advocate for their fellow students, develop their leadership capability and contribute to the wider community.

Providing more opportunities for local school students WINTON Solar Farm is delighted to support NE Tracks Hands On Trades Career Expo.

The event helps to support and facilitate employment opportunities for young people in the region, connecting students with new industries and employers.

Winton Solar Farm is also supporting the Social Enterprise Schools program, a student led initiative that brings together students, teachers, and local entrepreneurs to build skills and make a positive social impact.

The community grants program was set up to deliver clear benefit to the region and its communities, with local jobs and skills a priority funding area.

Winton Solar Farm is excited to see NE Tracks deliver these transformational projects and build skills and opportunity for young people in the region.

“The solar farm grants open up many new skills through the Social Enterprise Schools program for our region’s young people and will allow more local school kids to get involved in the event,” NE Tracks chief executive officer Danny O’Donoghue said.

Phonological awareness is the ability to hear, distinguish and manipulate the sounds of speech and this is incredibly important for learning to read and write.

Health and wellbeing focus within community leadership program THE Community Leadership Challenge (CLC) Program is an integral part of Wangaratta High School.

The program encourages students to link their learning to real life situations in a local and global community context whilst working with a dedicated team of teachers and mentors.

An early focus in the program is to develop empathy, which fuels compassion, the driving force in selecting their community project, and the learning focus of ‘do something for someone else in our community’.

The students have started this term by looking at ways to help their own health and wellbeing.

Our students were given the opportunity to travel to Lake William Hovell for their ǰ͂ŶźƁ͂ĵƟīƅŶźʼnŧŠ͂řĝźƁ͂ƚĵĵŗ˳ The students were encouraged to practice being mindful on their walk around the lake socialising with others and working together were an area of focus.

The students enjoyed working in small groups where they had to complete some challenges encouraging teamwork, communication, problem solving and strengthening relationships.

By linking students with the real world, it allows them the opportunity to take control of their learning and develop the essential interpersonal and organisational skills that enables them to take their place as valued members of society.

GROW 2022 THIS year the shared theme for the Cathedral College Wangaratta school community is GROW. This stands for, Grit, Relationships, Opportunities and Wonder. “We now invite all primary school-aged children to register for the 2km Primary School Challenge,” said Wangaratta Chronicle Marathon and Fun Run event manager, Karen Mayhew.

A culture for learning

THE students and teachers have had a wonderful start to the year in 2022.

There has been a lot of excitement among the community with the addition of our new group of Foundation students, new students into other year levels, the work that is getting done to complete the new facilities and the starting of our new outdoor classroom areas (an initiative from the Department of Education and Training). rĵ͂ņĝƙĵ͂źƁĝŶƁĵı͂ʏʍʏʏ͂ƚʼnƁņ͂ǰ͂ƙĵ͂īřĝźźĵź˳ It has been very pleasing to be able to şĝʼnŠƁĝʼnŠ͂Ɓņĵ͂źĝşĵ͂źƁĝǥ͂​͂ĝƁ͂Ɓņĵ͂źīņŧŧř͂ƁņĝƁ͂ we had in 2021.

We will also be welcoming back two of our favourite teachers later this year, Chanel Vincent and Lauren Peters. )ĝƙʼnŠŁ͂ǰ͂ƙĵ͂īřĝźźĵź͂ĝƁ͂Ɓņĵ͂źīņŧŧř͂ʼnź͂ĝŠ͂ initiative that is being driven by School Council.

This number of classes has allowed us to start the year with no greater than 21

students in a classroom. bņŶŧƅŁņŧƅƁ͂ʏʍʏʏ͂Ɓņĵ͂źƁĝǥ͂​͂ĝƁ͂HƟřĵƠ͂ Primary School are going to continue to build on the work that they completed in 2021 around writing.

The aim of this work is to boost student īŧŠǰ͂ıĵŠīĵ͂ʼnŠ͂ƚŶʼnƁʼnŠŁ͂ƁņŶŧƅŁņ͂Ɓņĵ͂ empowerment of skills and knowledge.

So far teachers have adapted the way that they are teaching writing at the school by making sure that there are daily 1:1 or small group, teacher conferences taking place.

Later this term the Oxley Primary [īņŧŧř͂ƚʼnřř͂Īĵ͂ŶƅŠŠʼnŠŁ͂ƁņĵʼnŶ͂şĝŔŧŶ͂ŶĝǨ ͂​͂ĵ˳ They have several very exciting prizes ƁņĝƁ͂ƚʼnřř͂ŀŧŶş͂Ɓņĵ͂Īĝźʼnź͂ŀŧŶ͂Ɓņʼnź͂ŶĝǨ ͂​͂ĵ˳ bņĵ͂ĝʼnş͂ŧŀ͂Ɓņʼnź͂ŶĝǨ ͂​͂ĵ͂ʼnź͂Ɓŧ͂ĝźźʼnźƁ͂Ɓņĵş͂Ɓŧ͂ build enough funds to be able to get a new playground at the school.

Parents and Friends will be trying to raise over $60,000 for the playground throughout 2022.

THE Moyhu Primary School has continued to develop a culture for learning. bņĵ͂źƁĝǥ͂​͂ĝƁ͂AŧƠņƅ͂ĝŶĵ͂īŧŠźʼnźƁĵŠƁřƠ͂ looking at ways to engage, challenge, extend and support student learning through various programs so their students can be the best learners that they can be.

One of the strategies they are using in the classroom is asking the ‘5 Learning for Success Questions’. What are we learning?

What does success look like? How do we know we are successful? How can I be more successful? Where can I go for help?

Creating a positive climate for learning within the classroom allows for the children to feel supported and empowered with their learning.

Last year they launched their school values and their mascots.

This has provided the school community with a shared understanding and a common language to support learning. [ƁƅıĵŠƁź͂ņĝƙĵ͂Ɓņĵ͂īŧŠǰ͂ıĵŠīĵ͂ĝŠı͂ĝŶĵ͂ creating learning goals with their teachers in writing, reading and numbers.

Students are able to observe and track their personal growth against previous work and new learnings are shared and celebrated as a group.

To enhance learning at the school, they provide a 1:1 iPad program and this gives students the ability to be more independent in the learning process, helps them track ĝŠı͂ŶĵDZ͂ĵīƁ͂ŧŠ͂ƁņĵʼnŶ͂řĵĝŶŠʼnŠŁ͂ĝŠı͂Łʼnƙĵź͂ them access to thousands of resources focussing on literacy and numeracy that are not available in conventional classroom environments.

They also work with a range of robotics and coding equipment to support their students in developing innovative and

New student leaders are of high quality STAFF and students at Appin Park Primary School have had a very smooth start the beginning of the 2022 school year.

They have welcomed several new students as well as their new Foundation class, who have all settled in well. [Ɓĝǥ͂​͂ĝŠı͂źƁƅıĵŠƁź͂ĝŶĵ͂ĵƟīʼnƁĵı͂Ɓŧ͂Īĵ͂ĝĪřĵ͂ to start the year onsite and remain positive that most events and activities will be able to go ahead as normal with COVID safe measures in place.

MICHELLE BOOTES The vision for Wangaratta High school is to empower all students to grow academically, socially and emotionally.

We provide an outstanding learning environment built on high expectations for success that will enable all students, with support, to experience quality teaching within a positive climate for learning.

The start of the year has seen the school welcome all of our new Year 7 students along with increased enrolments across all year levels. We continue to support students who need to catch up via the Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) and the Middle Years Numeracy and Literacy (MYLNS) program. Tutor teachers will support students for literacy and numeracy in Mathematics and English classes.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an integral focus of the school curriculum to ensure that we have happy, healthy and active students from Year 7 to Year 12. The Social and Personal Development Program sets out to teach a range of skills including those necessary to: understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. Research shows that student mental health and engagement in learning improves when they are taught SEL, leading to an average 11% gain in academic achievement.

We value the learning that comes from students challenging themselves with new experiences and environments, particularly in Co-Curricula programs: Drama, an outstanding music program, creative and critical thinking in technology, youth parliament and opportunities for students to participate in an overseas personal challenge program.

We would like to invite parents who wish to enrol their child for Year 7 in 2023, to an Information Night to be held in the Flexible Learning Centre on Thursday 17th March at 6pm. Wangaratta High School is proud to be the only school in this area to offer an accredited SEAL program. The Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Program is an innovative program for highly able students that has been running successfully at Wangaratta High School for more than a decade. the Year 7-9 curriculum at a faster pace in a separate class group. This program helps to meet the needs of gifted and high achieving students. Acceleration provides for a faster curriculum which is non-repetitive, gives students an opportunity to work with more complex and abstract course material, and it provides an adaptive and challenging learning environment. Certainly, our outstanding VCE results in 2021 attest to the SEAL program and other educational initiatives explored by the school.

We will continue our work with the wider community this year in developing the Community Garden Project as we seek additional funding to complete the second and third phases of this project.

The purpose of the garden is to create a shared garden that welcomes everyone, to provide students and community with the opportunity to grow and eat fresh produce, to strengthen a sense of place and belonging for WHS and Wangaratta Township, and to connect parents and local community members. The garden will also provide an outdoor teaching classroom that focusses on sustainability issues and expose students to handson environmental education. The completion of a Hospitality kitchen this year will be an integral part of continuing the Community Garden Project.

Student health and wellbeing is integral to all aspects of school life. At Wangaratta High School we see this as a shared responsibility between school, home and the community. We aim to ensure that a safe and supportive environment is created and maintained so that the experience of teaching and learning is enriched for the school community.

In March, Wangaratta High School will be excited to welcome the new Executive Principal, David Armstrong, to our community. David is a very experienced Principal who has worked across all sectors of education and he is currently the Principal of the International School in Vanuatu. I am sure that Wangaratta High School will thrive under his very experienced leadership and I wish him all the best. I would like to thank the Wangaratta community for their support over the past few years, as I have enjoyed working with the school community and I will miss Wangaratta High School.

A new start for a new year I am a Principal who believes in working as a team regardless of our role, to put our students first and to model what I expect through action. In my first two weeks this has taken shape through engaging with our college and community. I have met with each home room group, served toasties and fruit to our students at Breakfast Club, taken replacement classes and have been out to the oval during lunch to kick a footy with a few groups.

We welcomed over 190 new students in their first official day as a Year 7 Galen student and also a number of new Senior School students for the 2022 year, so I am not alone in a new start.

The warm welcome from staff, students and community has made for an excellent start and I have the benefit of being a local resident of Wangaratta and through my involvement in the local footy club to know many of our students and families.

I believe that each student must have a pathway to success based on their gifts and talents. For this to happen for all students we need to make sure that there are multiple learning pathways. At Galen Catholic College our students can immerse themselves in academic, practical and vocational pathways allowing their gifts and talents to shine.

As leaders we are duty bound to provide real leadership opportunities to those we lead, giving them a real chance to navigate their own course. Regardless of what your experience has been before you become a principal, regardless of the size, sector, or the roles you have had previously, we all start “green.” The unique experience of sitting in “the chair”

cannot be underestimated and every new principal must understand the bedrock, the foundation upon which the community they are entering, is built on. A colleague once said that understanding the 11th Commandment was the most important: the commandment of the corridor. It is the culture of the community, what we see and experience as we interact with those who live and breathe the day to day, and not that which is broadcast on the annual review or a glossy strategic plan that is important.

Gaining a deep understanding of the community can only be done through forming meaningful relationships with all staff and students. This relationship will give a window to what has happened and where our community wants to go. But this takes time, much more than one term.

At Galen Catholic College we are an inclusive Catholic community. We welcome all regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identification or the gifts and talents each student brings to our community.

Through our teachings from the gospel such as Luke 6:31 we can ensure our college community is able to “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.”

Last week our Year 12 students received their jumpers which is one of the many important rituals in their last year of school.

The jumper will be a lasting memory of their time at Galen Catholic College and we look forward to supporting each student in their studies and taking the last few steps together in their journey to their future pathways.

EDUCATION IN FOCUS DATES

While these are just some of the challenges we have experienced so far, our predominant feeling is simply gratitude that we have the opportunity to be back together to learn, laugh, play and grow with each other again.

GROW is our school wide theme for the 2022 school year at Cathedral College. GROW is an acronym for Grit, Relationships, Opportunities and Wonder. Together we will be encouraging our whole school community to focus on the important characteristics and opportunities which will assist them to achieve in all aspects of their learning and personal growth.

Wonder is such a crucial, yet sometimes underestimated characteristic for students to be successful learners. I hope that all our students develop a keen sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness which sees them seeking new knowledge and an understanding of the world around them. Self-directed learners who ask questions, seek understanding, and communicate ideas are some of the important qualities that a Cathedral College graduate is supported to develop.

The continued refinement and development of contemporary and highquality teaching and learning continues to be a focus for Cathedral College in 2022. With the introduction of our Bring Your Own Device Program in the Secondary School and our One-to-One iPad Program in the Junior School, our staff continue to ensure that students are immersed in an engaging and progressive learning environment which allows for differentiated and personalised learning.

As a future focussed school, we continue to analyse and evaluate the skills that our young people are going to need to successfully contribute to the modern world. We understand that our young people not only need to acquire foundation and technical skills (including high-level literacy and numeracy skills), but they must also develop the ability to be active problem solvers, effective communicators of ideas and an entrepreneurial mindset with

an appetite for ongoing learning. This requires us as educators to provide our students with immersive and real-world learning experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom environment. Our Year Nine Social Enterprise Program is one such example where our students are exposed to a real-world learning experience which requires collaboration, teamwork, and an ability to effectively communicate ideas.

In 2022 the mental and emotional health of our staff and students remains a key priority as our community recovers from the challenges that the pandemic has presented over the past two years. Cathedral College is proud of our inclusive and supportive school culture and while we have all been challenged during periods of remote learning and lockdowns, our strong sense of community has served us well in challenging times.

Our Anglican identity remains a key pillar for a Cathedral College education and in 2022 we are very excited to see our new chapel completed. The College Chapel, which presides in the heart of the school grounds will provide a beautiful space for students to experience chapel services and other presentations which supports their spiritual and emotional wellbeing and growth. The College Chapel will also be a space for students and staff to come together to reflect, respond and celebrate many life experiences.

Our chaplaincy team are key members of our pastoral and wellbeing staff and this venue will provide another facility to support students in their time of need.

Our new College Chaplain, Reverend Doctor Mark Mickelburough, is very excited to have joined The College in 2022. Reverend Mark is an experienced educator who also has a passion for the outdoors. Reverend Mark has been working for Parks Victoria and he is very much looking forward to working with our students to explore their spirituality and to strengthen their understanding of our Christian values and ethos.

At Cathedral College we are certainly looking forward to the new school year with positivity and optimism. The resilience and perseverance that all our students continue to demonstrate is certainly an inspiration to all of us. I am extremely proud of the education we offer the fine young people in our care and I extend a warm welcome to come and visit us and discover what a Cathedral Education encompasses.
