B BeyondHousing dH i aims i tto build 70 homes next year and 305 byy the end of 2025
A GOAL to end homelessness in the area remains the fundamental drive for the region’s leading affordable housing developer, BeyondHousing, as it aims to construct 305 homes by the end of 2025. The housing provider is currently building 220 homes and they aim to construct 70 more in 2024, involving an investment of about $24m alongside key partner the Peter & Lyndy White Foundation. It comes at a time the Victorian Housing Register or waitlist for public housing is at an all-time high - there are more than 1000 people in the region, and 67,120 (Dec 2022) across the state on the register. Home Victoria CEO Simon Newport attended BeyondHousing’s annual general meeting on Wednesday and had earlier visited some of the housing developments that are being delivered or proposed for Wangaratta. He said Homes Victoria is busily working on the regional housing package announced by the State Government and he would like “a good whack” of properties to be delivered in the North East. “Housing for the first time and for the wrong reasons is a mainstream issue and we need to take advantage of that and convince all levels of government that

continued, sustained investment is required,” Mr Newport said. “Victoria is actually leading the country at the moment in terms of what the government is putting in, so it’s my job to deliver that as quickly and as well as I can. “The waitlist is a large number and we acknowledge that, but every project helps and the former premier was absolutely right and the only real solution is more supply. “We’re getting on doing that and I visited the Templeton Street project through Uniting this morning and whether it’s Beyond or Uniting we’re really grateful to have partners. “This is an all hands on deck problem and it’s going to take everybody heading in the right direction to help fix it.” There are two multi-level developments in Wangaratta that have been approved which Uniting is a partnering with, including the 44 units in Templeton Street and the 40-unit student youth foyer on Docker Street. ■ Continued page 2
