Page 7

By THOMAS CHAMBEYRON CREATIVITY was on display at the Wangaratta Library on Wednesday as part of the school holiday program. With paintbrushes in hand and rocks on demand, primary school aged children, including 8 year old Piper Mathews (pictured) enjoyed ‘Painted Rocks’, making colourful rock creatures from the little treasures they had found. If you missed out on Wednesday’s event don’t be too disappointed as school holiday activities continue next week with ‘Watercolour Monsters’ on Tuesday and Fun with Solargraphy on Wednesday. Permit refusal Mayor ayor annoye annoyed as counc councillors ors rejec reject 56 6 lot o su subdivision v s on plans ans on Mason ason S Street ree

A PLANNING permit application for the staged subdivision of 56 lots of land on Mason Street in Wangaratta has been refused by Rural City of Wangaratta councillors. Councillors considered a report from council officers on Tuesday night which recommended the permit be rejected because it didn’t meet requirements of the Wangaratta Planning

Scheme due to the absence of public open space for the emerging community and failed to respond to the (significant) vegetation on the subject land. Mayor Dean Rees, who attended the meeting virtual-

ly, put forward an alternate motion to have the permit granted by council. “This is good for Wangaratta,” he said. “We have huge amounts of land as open space that we can’t afford to maintain correctly.” Under the plan’s design, the subdivision would have required a loss of native vegetation and public space in order to create housing

lots and an easement of drainage. Nine public objections had shown concern about the open spaces the subdivision would take away and the loss of trees and vegetation. Cr Rees said he reached out to the Department of Environment and Water Planning and said they were happy with the subdivision to be granted in its current

form, reiterating they were happy with the number of trees and vegetation planned to be cut down. Other councillors rejected the alternate motion, voting against the mayor and Cr Harvey Benton, fearing the design of the plan would risk too great a loss of native vegetation in the area. “I’m worried that unless we have controls in place, we run the risk of losing

trees and vegetation unnecessarily,” Cr Irene Grant said. After Cr Harry Bussell said he would not support the motion, Cr Rees expressed his frustrations. “You’re the one who says we need more subdivisions, more opportunities, more growth, to obtain more rates and you’re saying no, aren’t you hypocritical?” he said. ■ Continued page 2
