SOUNDING THE CALL WANGARATTA High School students Stephanie Grant (clarinet), Xavier Zachariou (trombone) and Sam Brooker (trumpet) hope fellow woodwind and brass musicians will take advantage of the chance to participate in the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues’ community project this year. As the festival returns to a live format in 2022, locals will be able to take part in three workshops with Melbourne band Horns of Leroy - the first of them on April 9 - and then hit the stage with the band during the October festival. Jazz & blues live No online N li ffestival i l this hi year as entertainers i prepare to wow audiences di iin person again i LIVE music is back back, and organisers of the 2022 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues couldn’t be more excited. There will be a true sense of celebration in the rural city later this year when the event returns to a live format, following its cancellation in 2019 to ensure the ongoing viability of the festival, and two subsequent years impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

The 2020 festival was an entirely virtual event, while last year organisers were only able to stage the National Jazz Awards online. With planning well in hand to return to a live event this October, locals

are being encouraged to hear more about what’s in store during a festival launch at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre next Friday, April 8. The launch will kick off at 7.30pm with official proceedings, followed by a performance from Melbourne’s Horns of Leroy, a New Orleans-style brass band, then drinks and canapes. The event is free, with

those attending asked to RSVP via email to businessmanager@wangarattajazz. com. “We will launch some elements of the program and make some early announcements about this year’s event,” the festival’s general manager, Leanne Mulcahy, said. “This is a great opportunity to hold an event and let people know the festival is on and happening, and to

acknowledge the Wangaratta community’s role in the festival.” Ms Mulcahy said there had been considerable public interest in whether the event would return to a live presentation this year, and organisers were excited, and feeling “relief and cautious optimism”, as they looked forward to releasing details about the approaching festival with the community.

“We are very fortunate to have got through the last two years and to be in the position to deliver this year’s event,” she said. “The COVID years have been very tough for artists, so we were pleased we were able to run the jazz awards, which gave them the opportunity during those bleak times to be recognised for what they do. ■ Continued page 2
