WELCOME

index Calendar of Events Snow News

Welcome to the Winter issue of the North East Tourist News 2016 FROM enjoying the pristine white slopes of our diverse snow resorts, to getting cosy beside an open fire in the North East’s welcoming pubs or restaurants, the region shows off its diverse attractions during winter. The weather may be cold, but there is still a wide array of festivals and events throughout the season. During the Queen’s Birthday weekend in particular, visitors and locals alike are spoiled for choice. Wine lovers flock to Rutherglen for their popular Winery Walkabout, or head across to the King Valley for their Weekend Fit For A King, or the Glenrowan area for Trails, Tastings and Tales. The weekend also sees local mountains and alpine villages, including Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Dinner Plain and Mt Buller, welcome in the official start to the snow season. The snow attracts many to the region to enjoy a range of activities, including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, snowshoe walks, and après ski socialising. It’s always a good idea to drop in to your nearest visitor information centre for helpful advice on upcoming events and other opportunities to make the most of your stay, whether it is for a few days or a few weeks. Whatever the duration, we hope you enjoy your time in our beautiful part of the world. Jeff Zeuschner GROUP EDITOR

SNOW NEWS

Ultimate alpine beer experience MELTING snow and clear unpolluted skies make the waters of the high Victorian Alps some of the purest in Australia. Such an unadulterated ingredient – snow melt – is what inspired Blizzard Brewing Company founder Mark Hubbard to produce Australia’s newest brews, carefully crafted by an award-winning brewer. “When you go to a vineyard you can taste the influences of the environment on the wine,” he said. “That’s what I’m mostly excited about in our beer; we’re brewing with the freshest water available to any brewer in Australia.” Nestled among the snow gums at Dinner Plain, 1550 metres above sea level, Blizzard Brewing Co. opened its doors at Easter, with its brews served at venues throughout Dinner Plain, Hotham and Falls Creek. But it’s at the brewery itself that visitors get the ultimate beer experience, with the opportunity to taste the locally sourced ingredients separately, including hops from Myrtleford and lavender from Harrietville.

Bringing it all together is head brewer Alan Sheppard, co-founder of Barcelona’s Edge Brewing, which was voted the Top New Brewer in the World by Rate Beer in 2014. He’s kicked off the menu with six unique takes on a pale ale, amber ale, larger, IPA and kolsch. There is even an aromatic lavender larger on tap, crafted for those who appreciate delicate notes.

“The Brandy Creek Kolsch will be very popular after a big day out on the slopes because it’s very approachable and doesn’t have too much bitterness in it,” Mr Hubbard said. “But for those who do like a hoppy taste, the Powder Pale Ale will be something they’ll go for.” As for his favourite, it’s the Avalanche Amber Ale. “It’s so smooth and delicious.”

SNOW NEWS

Plenty happening in the mountains IF you love the snow, the North East is the place for you, with the snow resorts of Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Buller and many more lying in wait for you. Each mountain offers their own unique delights, challenges and apres ski fun, and are out there to discover for yourself. The snow season officially opens on Queen’s Birthday weekend, with each mountain hosting their own unique events to mark the occasion, and the season will boast a host of events, from races to snowboarding competitions, ski lessons, workshops, and much more. For more information, see: Mt Buller – mtbuller.com.au Mt Hotham – www.hothamholidays.com Falls Creek – www.fallscreek.com.au

HOP TO IT: The Kangaroo Hoppet, held in August, is one of the biggest drawcards to Falls Creek each year. PHOTO: Chris Hocking.

AS the first snowflakes fall on the multi-leveled pitched rooftops of Dinner Plain’s iconic houses this winter, the residents will be celebrating more than just the start of the ski season: this architectural marvel of alpine Australia is turning 30 years old. Dinner Plain is one of Australia’s most unique villages. When it comes to architecture and vision, there is nothing like it anywhere else in Australia says Malcolm Macpherson, a long-term resident. Macpherson says Dinner Plain’s cattlemen’s-hut inspired cabins painted the colours of snow gums, paired with an alpine landscape rare in the Australian environment were key elements inspiring award-winning architect Peter McIntyre’s early design for the village. “His idea was that the buildings

would blend in with the landscape,” Macpherson says. This harmonisation creates a wonderful atmosphere that has made Dinner Plain a family favourite for winter escapes, with adventure at its doorstep, from sunset sled dogs tours, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, tobogganing and tubing, to fine dining at Graze and Stones Throw and craft beer brewed right at the base of the ski slope at Blizzard Brewing Company. Dinner Plain is a one-hour drive from Bright and there is no resort entry. Drive safely and hire some snow chains from Hoys Ski Shop in Harrietville, where they will also show you how to put them on. Or sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery on a bus trip up the Great Alpine Road – one of the best drives in Australia.

Taste, explore and feast like a king ACROSS the Weekend Fit For A King festival, the winemaking families of the King Valley open brand new release wines for festival-goers to taste, including the Italian varietals they are known for – Prosecco, Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. At cellar door the winemakers will guide you through what makes

this region so unique. A tip - it’s partly about soil, climate and location, and partly about that Italian spirit. To accompany the wine, authentic, homemade dishes are made from family recipes. Think farm-made sausages, warming stews, a feast of pasta and pizza, and cannoli from the

A cosy getaway POP into Rutherglen Estates cellar door during winter and you will be greeted by a cosy fire, a warm welcome by friendly, knowledgeable staff, and of course some great wines. With more than 20 wines on tasting daily there is definitely something for everyone. Winter is traditionally a time for hearty stews and casseroles, and what better way to enjoy them than with a glass of red. Rutherglen Estates have a number of exciting red wines including the 2014 Shiraz Durif and the 2014 Durif, both wines are delicious and in fact in the words of their winemaker, some of their best yet. If red wine isn’t your thing, then they have some beautiful full bodied white wines with that will match perfectly with your winter fare. Rutherglen Estates cellar door is located within the Tuileries complex

old country. This is rustic cuisine, made to be eaten with friends, family and wine. Participating wineries are: Brown Brothers, Chrismont, Dal Zotto, Darling Estate, Francesco, La Cantina, Merkel, Pizzini, Politini, Sam Miranda and Symphonia. Throughout the valley there is a host of special events, including

masterclasses, a “King’s Feast”, helicopter flights and more. Entry to the festival is $20, which includes a souvenir tasting glass. Children play free. Book tickets online in advance at www.winesofthekingvalley.com.au. For more information about getting here, www.visitkingvalley. com.au.

ALBURY/WODONGA

Overnight visitors to Border increase OVERNIGHT visitors to Albury-Wodonga increased by 24 per cent in 2015, according to data collated in the 2015 Albury Wodonga Visitor Economy Trends (AWVET). Domestic and international visitors spent 1.72 million nights in Albury-Wodonga in 2015, helping to inject $613m into the Border economy. The number of domestic visitor nights reached 1.465 million in 2015, up from 1.299 million in 2014, which represents a 13 per cent increase. The average stay of international visitors increased by 11 nights per trip, representative of a combined 257,868 nights stayed in 2015 (this change is largely due to an increase in employment visitors, and the inclusion of working holiday makers in the 2015 sample). Tourists are also increasingly engaging with online platforms both before and during their visits, with 48,434 unique visitors utilising the visitALBURYWODONGA website and various social media platforms. Wodonga council mayor Anna Speedie said the 2015 AWVET shows another strong year in tourism, which can be attributed to the everincreasing awareness of Albury-Wodonga as a destination of choice and the work being done to attract events to this region.

“Tourism continues to be a significant sector for Albury-Wodonga, injecting more than $613 million into the local economy in 2015. “Attractions and activities such as Wodonga’s Junction Place precinct, Albury’s MAMA, the Border’s annual events calendar and the scope of accommodation and food offerings can be attributed to this noteworthy economic outcome,” she said. AlburyCity acting mayor David Thurley reiterated the report’s importance in providing a comprehensive profile of tourism in AlburyWodonga, detailing the number and type of visitors to the area as well as their purpose for visiting and primary activities. “Data from the report helps to inform future tourism priorities and strategies for the twin cities, while also providing key data to underpin investor decision making. “The value of tourism can often be overlooked given its impact on many industry sectors, emphasising the strength of this report in providing a consolidated profile of the sector,” he said.

Roads and tracks closing temporarily re-open in time for the Melbourne Cup weekend in November. Some early closures are necessary in some parts of the state. “This includes closures such as Whiskey Creek Track (south of Tatong) to protect Benalla’s water supply, as well as dead end tracks - McCreadys Track and Dandongadale Track (near Lake Buffalo) – to prevent four wheel drives getting stranded due to steep descents. “Lightning Creek Track, near Mitta Mitta, will close this Monday for road maintenance and public safety. “To make sure visitors have a safe and enjoyable time, while still protecting the environment, we want to ensure everyone has the best available information before leaving,â€? Mr Hayse said. “As always we want anyone driving in our parks and forests to stay on the formed roads, take their rubbish home, and take note of campďŹ re rules and regulations.â€? For those wanting to plan their trip go to the Public Access Map site in the visiting parks and forests section at www.depi.vic.gov.au/ forestry-and-land-use/visitingparks-and-forests/visiting-stateforests/public-access-map. For maps of closures in parks check the ‘Safety/closures and conditions’ section at www.parks. vic.gov.au. SELECTED roads and tracks in North East Victoria’s forests and parks will temporarily close to trafďŹ c to improve driver safety, protect track surfaces and mitigate impacts on the environment. As part of an annual program, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria will close a range of tracks during winter and spring in the Ovens, Upper Murray, Goulburn and Murrindindi districts. DELWP’s acting regional manager, forest and ďŹ re operations – Hume, Jarrod Hayse, said: “The majority of the seasonal road closures are in the high country, which is subject to winter snow that in some cases make tracks impassable.â€? “The closures are important because our forest roads and tracks become much more difďŹ cult for drivers to use safely during this period,â€? Mr Hayse said. “The damage to some tracks would be signiďŹ cant if they were left open all year round. “As part of the process we consult with stakeholders, including Four Wheel Drive Victoria, and notify other local user groups and visitor information centres. “By protecting park roads and tracks we can improve water quality by reducing erosion and the amount of silt which is washed into rivers, creeks and reservoirs. “Most of the roads and tracks will close on Thursday, June 16 after the Queen’s Birthday weekend and will

BEECHWORTH

What does it mean to truly belong? RENOWNED author and leading chronicler of Australian life Hugh Mackay will deliver the annual Kerferd Oration in Beechworth this year. Hugh Mackay is a social researcher and the author of 16 books, including the 2013 bestseller, The Good Life, sub-titled What makes a life worth living? His latest book, The Art of Belonging, uses a mixture of social analysis and storytelling to explore the reasons why some communities thrive and others break down, and to explain how community engagement enriches us all. Kerferd Oration committee chair Ian McKinlay said that the oration theme was a natural follow up to the theme of last year’s oration, by Dr Simon Longstaff AO, which focused on ethics and the unseen or ‘invisible’ members of the community. Hugh Mackay’s Oration is entitled The Art of Belonging, and is ‘close to my heart’. “It’s about living in community in changing times ... the challenge of maintaining a decent and inclusive community life, he said. “It’s about how we live, not where we live. “How do we live with the social changes that threaten to fragment communities? “In what ways can we minimise the impact of those changes? “What techniques can we develop together for

increasing our sense of belonging? “The beneďŹ ts, especially the mental health beneďŹ ts, for individuals, as well as communities, in mastering the art of belonging are many and powerful: ‘You don’t really know who you are until you know where you belong’.â€? Mr McKinlay said the Kerferd Oration committee was ‘absolutely delighted’ to have Hugh Mackay deliver this year’s oration.

“He is well known for his insights into people and communities and what makes them work, and what might fracture them, Mr McKinlay said. The Kerferd Oration, now in its 14th year, will be held at the George Kerferd Hotel, Mayday Hills, Beechworth, at 11am on Sunday, July 24. It is a free community event and doors open at 10.15am. The oration is sponsored by Indigo Shire Council, Quercus Beechworth, WAW and La Trobe University.

Plenty brewing at Bridge Road Brewers BEER lovers will find that there is plenty going on at Beechworth’s high profile Bridge Road Brewers. The latest addition to the brewery itself has been their new Foeder Crafter, which Bridge Road Brewers’ Ben Kraus says is the first of its kind in Australia. The brewery made a connection with the crafter manufacturer after recent export success in America, and the manufacturing company

commented, “we are really happy to have one of our Foeders in the land of Crowded House, Men at Work and Courtney Barnett”. As a result Bridge Road Brewers will begin releasing a new series of 100 per cent Brett beers fermented in their Foeder. The range will be rolled out under the Mayday Hills banner, and will focus on including ingredients and influences from the Mayday Hills

area of Beechworth and Stanley. Bridge Road Brewers also recently released two unique beers, named Beer de Wilde, which have been made in conjunction with two local wineries, Sorrenberg and A Rodda. There is an air of celebration at the brewery at the moment, with the upcoming Queen’s Birthday weekend coinciding with their 11th birthday. Revellers can enjoy one of the regular Sunday Sessions at Bridge

Road Brewers on that weekend, with the session happening between 2.30-5.30pm. More information is available by dropping into Bridge Road Brewers at the Old Coach House in Ford Street, Beechworth, via bridgeroadbrewers.com.au or their social media accounts, or by calling (03) 5728 2703.

THE weather may be cold in North East Victoria at this time of year but there is one place you are sure to always receive a warm welcome Chiltern. Regular visitors to the village in Indigo Shire will understand but if you haven’t been to Chiltern recently, much has changed about this gentle old lady of a town and in winter you can almost have the place to yourself. People say you can ‘smell’ winter and the autumn break signifies a stage of renewal in the Chiltern – Mount Pilot National Park. But there is also something wonderful about winter that creates a longing in visitors to Chiltern. It may be the streetscape that harkens back to a bygone era or a visit to one of the three National Trust properties in Chiltern that reach out to you and take you on a journey back in time. It may be one of the new retail outlets in Chiltern that will pique your interest or perhaps just sitting by a

BEECHWORTH

Beechworth in the minds of thousands TWO low-key but highly effective social media projects put Beechworth as a destination in the minds of over 100,000 people in just a few days during autumn. The first project was a short video, supported by the Chamber of Commerce and industry operators, of local people and highlights of the town and surrounds which recorded 30,000 views on facebook within a day of its launch on Tuesday, April 19. The video had over 53,000 views as at 11am on Friday, April 22. Indigo Shire’s tourism manager Clayton Neil said that was 50,000+ people being exposed to some of the best food, wine, shopping, riding, and relaxation activities anywhere in the country. “Visits to council’s tourism website increased 400 per cent the day the video was launched with most people viewing multiple pages to discover more about what’s on offer,” he said. The second project was the

recent hosting of three of Australia’s leading tourism Instagrammers in the Beechworth region. “This Instagram activity was a Tourism North East project which council supported. “The Instagrammers have a collective audience of 715,000 followers and were invited into the region as part of a Murray to Mountains Rail Trail marketing initiative,” Mr Neil said. “One of the images, of the Beechworth Gorge, has since been

posted by @visitmelbourne (Tourism Victoria) and @australia (Tourism Australia). “These two Instagram accounts have a collective audience of 2.5 million followers. “The Tourism Australia post of the Beechworth image attracted 50,000+ likes in less than a day. “This is an outstanding result putting the Beechworth Gorge response right up there with Tourism Australia’s most popular posts of recent times.” In addition to the Instagram post,

Tourism Australia posted an album of one of the Instagrammer’s images to their Facebook page on April 21. Two of the images in the album are from Beechworth, Lake Sambell and Beechworth Gorge. The post currently has 13,000 likes, has been shared nearly 1800 times and features many comments from international travellers. Indigo Shire mayor James Trenery said two projects were both low cost initiatives that were well planned, brilliantly executed, and spectacularly effective. “They show the natural beauty of the Beechworth area, its streetscapes, wineries, restaurants, retail, and all of the good things that we know and love - but often take for granted,” Cr Trenery said. “Importantly, the video also includes a number of local business owners and prominent people.” You can view the video on www. explorebeechworth.com.au and the Explore Indigo Facebook page.

MUSICAL: The Kelly Country Pick attracts musicians from far and wide.

Winter music festival returns to Beechworth THE town of Beechworth comes alive every August to the sounds of banjos, mandolins, fiddles and guitars as the Kelly Country Pick, an annual Bluegrass and Old Time music festival returns from August 19- 21. Now in its 18th year, what began as a small gathering of musical friends has developed into a music festival which draws musicians and lovers of acoustic music from all over the country. Events now take place in four iconic Beechworth venues over the weekend – the Old Priory, the Bridge Rd Brewery, and the Hibernian and Nicholas Hotels. Patrons can buy a variety of tickets to suit their needs – from weekend passes to individual

concert or workshop tickets. The Kelly Country Pick presents a jam packed weekend of concerts, workshops, open mic sessions and jamming opportunities for musicians of all levels. Come along and enjoy the atmosphere in historic Beechworth this winter – cosy open fires, wine and dine with friends and be entertained by some of Australia’s finest string players. Or get involved – go to a workshop, volunteer for a free weekend ticket, or join in the Sunday morning gospel singing in the Priory garden. There is something for everyone. Picturesque Porepunkah comes up a treat

AUTUMN COLOURS: While Porepunkah and the Alpine Shire is picturesque all year round, Benalla photographer Rene Martens captured some of the early change in colour when visiting the upper Ovens Valley during Autumn. Martens took some stunning pictures along the Canyon Walk but it was this photo of the rest area at Porepunkah that really caught the eye. Take a drive to Bright and district and enjoy the picturesque views and relaxed pace of some of the North East’s friendliest towns.

Settle in with a winter brew AS Bright becomes a somewhat sleepy town during winter, with all the snow season action focused on the nearby mountain tops, there’s no better place to enjoy a cosy break than at Bright Brewery in the heart of beautiful Bright. Relax and warm your body in the fully heated brewery bar while you warm your soul with the finest MountainCrafted beers, which are all produced on site. Open every day from 11am until late, there’s always something for everyone at Bright Brewery. Take a seat on the couches by the fire and watch the brewers in action, or enjoy the fresh mountain air out on the covered Hop Terrace. There’s a full menu for lunch and dinner, plus pizzas available all day, along with local wines, cider, coffee and even food and drink for the kids. This winter marks the 10 year anniversary of Bright Brewery opening at 121 Great Alpine Road. The occasion is being marked with a month of celebrations that will set in place a new era for the local brewery. This includes a brand new winter menu and the welcoming of new Head Brewer Richard

Chamberlin, an Englishman whose brewing pedigree includes Brewsters Brewery in the UK and the Mildura Brewery in Victoria’s North West. Richard will help oversee the expansion of Bright Brewery, following the business’s recent purchase of a new site in Bright to build a larger production brewery with the aim to meet the growing demand for their craft beers and to take those products to the national market. “This is a very exciting time for our brewery,” said Bright Brewery’s James Davidson.

“Our second decade will see Bright Brewery’s MountainCrafted beers available in more outlets around the country and also provide us with the opportunity to make more limited release and experimental beers.” Festivities will include an annual Christmas in July fundraiser event on Sunday, July 17, which helps to raise much needed funds to support a member of the community in need. Tickets are available from the Bright Brewery bar and website.

Winter at MOUNT Buffalo is set to once again appeal as a family mountain this year. The mountain will offer toboggan and snow play areas, with two managed areas at the national park. At Dingo Dell, aimed mainly at family groups with young children, there will be a dedicated toboggan slope with a safe runout area at the bottom and ample space for snowplay (visitors are advised that only plastic moulded toboggans are allowed to be used). While the facilities at Cresta Valley may be a little more basic than Dingo Dell, the tobogganing is more diverse and there is also a managed area for family oriented fun. Cresta Valley also has three groomed ski trails plus a large untracked/unmarked area for the more adventurous and well prepared. For those who prefer walking, there is a marked walking route at both Dingo Dell and Cresta to

Inside Keown Lodge there is a heated CafĂŠ and Day Visitor Area; toilet; change rooms; First Aid Centre; and large windows that look directly out on all the fun. Visitors can BYO food and drinks to enjoy inside. The car park is a popular place to set up a BYO gas barbecue for a sausage sizzle. Cresta Valley is serviced by: a small car park area, with additional parking along the road; and portable toilets. Licensed tour operators will be offering cross country ski instruction and snow-shoeing during the winter season. Enquire at local visitor centres or at Dingo Dell. There are a couple of options for those interested in coming to camp at Mt Buffalo over winter. Camping is only permitted in designated sites: Rocky Creek, Mt McLeod and Lake Catani. All campsites require a booking, see www.parkstay.vic.gov.au/bookyour-stay for more details.

WITH over 60 years, and several generations of fruit production expertise, Wandiligong business Nightingale Bros continues to grow and expand. The business got its start in 1954 when family patriarch Keith Nightingale and his brother Alan purchased the business’ original 48 hectare Wandiligong orchard. He travelled widely looking for ways to perfect the art of fruit growing, and after a visit to America, pioneered frost control using “over-tree” sprinklers. In 1968, Nightingale Bros built one of the first coolrooms in the country at their orchard. The fruit growing is now spread across five orchards – two in Wandiligong as well as in the Buckland Valley, Stanley and Batlow, NSW. In early 2014, a $1.2 million upgrade was undertaken to replace the old cold storage facility

KING VALLEY

Gin still brings diversity to tourism scene HURDLE Creek Still is a new family owned gin distillery, situated midway between Milawa and the King Valley. The distillery is owned and operated by Wendy Williams and Simon Brooke-Taylor. Wendy and Simon’s vision started with a farm shed, a great concept and years of experience. Simon has a degree in biochemistry and is also a master brewer while Wendy is a farmer with a background in accounting and sales. The stillhouse was designed by Wendy using recycled materials. The still was purpose built and the rest of the distillery has been created from rescued dairy vats. The still has a direct gas fired pot with a six plate column, and the gin botanicals are vapour infused directly from the head of the still using a custom designed Carter head. It’s important to Wendy and Simon that they use quality ingredients which are grown on the farm at Bobinawarrah or by neighbours, or

AT WORK: Simon Brooke-Taylor at work on a batch of gin.

foraged locally where possible. Pink peppercorn, which grow all around the district, are harvested to give their Yardarm Gin a huge new world gin flavour.

Unlike many distillers, Wendy and Simon make their own spirit from barley and oats, which they mill using a recycled dairy feed mill. The spent grains are fed to their

herd of shorthorn cattle, their horses and chooks so there’s no wastage. They do all their own bottling and labelling so it’s a very hands on business. On weekends they like to have the stillhouse operating so visitors can experience the process and smell the wonderful aromas that various stages of the process produce. Currently Wendy and Simon make two gins - Yardarm, a new world distilled gin, and Evolution, a unique aniseed - but have plans to make other seasonal artisan products. The stillhouse is always open on weekends and public holidays. On weekdays the stillhouse is usually open but they always suggest you ring ahead to avoid the disappointment of a closed gate. Hurdle Creek Still has been receiving great reviews, check them out on www.hurdlecreekstill. com.au or visit their Facebook page at facebook.com/hurdlecreekgin.

MYRTLEFORD

COUNTRY GETAWAY: David Byrne in the grounds at Ardern’s Caravan Park.

Local caravan park continues to evolve STAYING at Ardern’s Caravan Park in Myrtleford has been a tradition for many generations of family, and the park continues to evolve and thrive under the newest owners, David and Leisa Byrne. The couple took over the park in September 2014, making a treechange with their children from bustling Sydney, and they have made many improvements to the venue since then. Mr Byrne said some of the improvements

and changes made in the past 18 months have included regressing and relevelling many sites, the construction of a dedicated office, and building two camp kitchens for the use of guests (with plans to build more). Ardern’s Caravan Park has been popular with visitors for many decades, and the park has a range of accommodation options to suit visitors, from various caravan sites to welcoming cabins. The caravan park is also pet friendly.

They are located a few minutes’ drive or walk from Myrtleford’s CBD, which boasts a range of cafes, restaurants, and other shopping to enjoy, or you can also enjoy nearby cycling trails, or take a trip to Lake Buffalo. Ardern’s Caravan Park is located in Willow Grove, Myrtleford (just off the Great Alpine Road, at the Bright end of town) and more information is available by calling (03) 5752 1394 or on their Facebook page.

Ardern’s Caravan Park - Myrtleford Ardern’s Caravan Park is a friendly family park situated in the Ovens Valley, approximately one kilometre from the Myrtleford Post Office. It is adjacent to the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail and backs onto Happy Valley Creek.

Marmungun Rock begins carving Bullawah Cultural Trail THE next stage of the Bullawah Cultural Trail project has commenced with the carving of the large Marmungun Rock granite rock in Apex Park. The 15 tonne rock, delivered by a large crane earlier this year, will signify the beginning of the walking trail. The Marmungun Rock (Elders Rock) concept was designed by the late Wally Cooper, a highly respected Elder whose pride in his Aboriginal heritage and message for hope for the future inspired many. Local indigenous artist Chris Thorne began carving animal motifs into the rock in May. “This is a really exciting step toward achieving the Marmungun Rock Project and we are pleased Uncle Wally’s passion for reconciliation

SOLID ROCK: Carvings on these rocks mark part of the ongoing Bullawah Cultural Trail project.

will continue and leave a legacy for future generations, Mr Thorne said. “Each year during National Reconciliation Week, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community will publicly recognise local community leaders in a special cultural ceremony and will unveil their handprints on the Marmungun Rock. Council’s chair of administrators, Ailsa Fox, said it’s great to see this project come together. “There will be a lot happening in the coming months and it is fantastic to see relationships strengthen between indigenous and nonindigenous people in the local community who are all working to achieve a shared goal, she said.

The Bullawah Cultural Trail winds along 2.4km of the beautiful Ovens Riverside path in Wangaratta and is due for completion in August. The trail will feature several other sites with rock formations, sculptures, and have interpretive signage to help share indigenous culture and Dreamtime stories. An indigenous garden with bush tucker is also planned. The $180,000 project has been made possible through grants from Regional Development Victoria and Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources and the Rural City of Wangaratta.

PETITE: Miniature Textiles showcases the diversity of approach in textile artistry. This exhibition includes wide-ranging media including tapestry weaving, lace, sculpture, applique, assemblage, embroidery, felting, basketry and dyeing. INTENSE COLOUR: Joy Smith’s work Strange Fruit #3, a 10.5x19.5cm woven tapestry, is part of the PETITE: Miniature Textiles exhibition at Wangaratta Art Gallery this winter.

The beauty of the landscape and the fragile nature of the environment provide inspiration for many of the artists such as Dawn Fleet’s work Outback and Carol Sonogan’s embroidery piece Seascape. Colour is forefront in Joy Smith’s tapestry Strange Fruit, where home grown fruit take on an intense presence. The boundaries of textile art is widened by Marianne Penberthy’s sculptural work Unsettlement and Mollie Rice’s work Floor Plan #1. DO ST UB AND LE AR fro D m $6 5
