WELCOME TO THE WINTER EDITION OF NORTH EAST TOURIST NEWS 2013 Table of Contents

F

ROM skiing the pristine white slopes of our resorts, to getting cosy beside an open ďŹ re in the North East’s welcoming pubs or restaurants, the region shows off its diverse attractions during winter.

The weather may be cold, but there is still a wide array of festivals and events throughout the season.

During the Queen’s Birthday weekend in particular, visitors and locals alike are spoiled for choice.

Wine lovers ock to Rutherglen for their popular Winery Walkabout, or head across to the King Valley for their Weekend Fit For A King, or the Glenrowan area for Trails, Tastings and Tales.

The weekend also sees local mountains and alpine villages, including Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Dinner Plain and Mt Buller, welcome in the ofďŹ cial start to the snow season.

The snow attracts many to the region to enjoy a range of activities, including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, snowshoe walks, and après ski socialising.

Textile fans will once again ock to Wangaratta for the Stitched Up Textile Festival, showcasing all manner of textile creations and underlining Wangaratta’s reputation for textiles.

more about Ned Kelly at the Ned Kelly Weekend in Beechworth.

It’s always a good idea to drop in to your nearest visitor information centre for helpful advice on upcoming events and other opportunities to make the most of your stay, whether it is for a few days or a few weeks.

Mount Buffalo National Park a winter wonderland T

HE Island in the Sky winter team, in conjunction with Parks Victoria, invite you to visit a family friendly winter wonderland - Mount Buffalo National Park - for an amazing snow experience this winter.

Mount Buffalo provides a memorable snow experience for all ages with their warm cafĂŠ and visitor facilities at Dingo Dell.

They have great toboggan runs at Dingo Dell and Cresta, with toboggan hire available, while cross country skiers are well catered for with both groomed and back country ski trails.

For cross-country skiers, there are a range of opportunities for all skill levels, with groomed marked cross-country trails at Cresta Valley, remote, unmarked trails, and almost unlimited back-country ski touring.

Downhill ski tows do not operate at Mount Buffalo.

Join Mount Buffalo Ski School, to learn to cross-country ski at Dingo Dell, or book a snowshoe ramble.

They can provide leaders to take you on a tour of one of the many ski trails on the plateau, with skill tuition along the way.

They also run alpine abseiling, ice climbing, mountaineering, and much more.

The Dingo Dell Cafe will operate all winter and there is plenty of parking. Light lunches, snacks, coffee and hot chocolate and some winter apparel are available.

Have a cup of coffee, a hot meal or a snack while the kids toboggan, the cafe window wall out to the snow provides great views, open 10am-5pm most days.

Toboggan, snowshoe and some crosscountry ski hire is available at the CafĂŠ/Ski School.

The Parks Victoria ranger team have been preparing for the snow since early May and the rangers advise all vehicles are to carry chains and ďŹ t as directed.

Appropriate warm winter clothing and footwear should be worn.

SCAPE to John Gehrig Wines’ cellar doors in Oxley and Gooramadda this winter to sample the best of what the local winery has to offer.

The Gooramadda cellar door will be open during the Winery Walkabout festival over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

The Gehrig family built the cellar door within the old winery site on the property, which originally dates back to the 1870s; so there is plenty of historic infrastructure for history buffs to check out.

During winter at the Oxley cellar door, the Gehrig family will be hosting French Paradox events, run by local business La Petite Piaf, featuring French inspired food, cheese and wine.

These will be held on June 29, July 20 and August 31.

Visitors to either cellar doors can also sample some of the winery’s new vintage releases, including Cabernet Merlot, Durif, Riesling and Elizabeth’s Block.

The Trails, Tastings and Tales celebration is held from Saturday, June 8 through to Monday, June 10 and takes in ďŹ ve wineries – Baileys of Glenrowan, Silent Range Estate, Auldstone Cellars, Booth’s Taminick Cellars and Morrisons of Glenrowan. “To participate we offer a tasting glass for purchase at $5 which people take on the wine trail with them,â€? Ms Booth said. “They also go into the draw for a Glenrowan winemakers’ pack of premium wines when they get their card stamped at all ďŹ ve wineries over the weekend.â€?

The wineries are open from 10am-5pm over the three days.

There will be a ďŹ ve course degustation dinner matched with Glenrowan regional wines, held at Rinaldo’s in Wangaratta on Sunday, June 9. Tickets for the dinner are $95 per person.

AID to be one of Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most historic areas, Beechworthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heritage is deeply entrenched in the gold rush era and continues to live via its historical and cultural precinct in the centre of town.

Established in 1852 as a direct result of the discovery of gold in Spring Creek, it is one of the few Victorian towns that have retained the character and appearance it developed by the 1880s.

In the centre of Beechworth stands the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous post ofďŹ ce, which has a clock that has chimed every hour since 1859.

It has stood the test of time, despite alterations and additions, and survived the disastrous Camp Street ďŹ re in 1867.

Perhaps one of the most popular of Beechworthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attractions is the courthouse, where visitors can see the dock

A more recent addition to the precinct is the Powder Magazine on Gorge Road, built in 1859 in order to store gunpowder for the use of miners.

HE various facets of the life of one of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most infamous ďŹ gures, Ned Kelly, will once again be examined in Beechworth during the Ned Kelly Weekend on August 9-11.

The weekend will once again feature re-enactments of Ned Kellyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ nal trial, as well as Ellen Kellyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trial for the attempted murder of Constable Fitzpatrick.

The re-enactments will once again feature John Murphy as Ned Kelly, and Rosemary English as Ellen Kelly.

The weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s events will also include a re-enactment of the siege at Glenrowan, noted author Ian Jones giving a talk on the

myths surrounding Ned Kelly, and Michael Beattie, who formerly played Ned Kelly in the re-enactments, speaking about his years playing the role.

Local tour guide will speak about Joe Byrne, and there will be a â&#x20AC;&#x153;heritage villageâ&#x20AC;? set up on Beechworthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s police paddocks.

The many activities over the weekend will include a gold nugget hunt for the kids, and the many re-enactments will include bushrangers â&#x20AC;&#x153;robbingâ&#x20AC;? Bendigo Bank.

HE only Victorian showing of the 2013 Bald Archy Prize will be in the charming Benalla satellite village of Swanpool this August.

On announcing this positive development, the founder/ director of the widely popular event, Peter Batey OAM, congratulated the Swanpool and District Community Development Association Inc. The winner was announced in Sydney on April 5, with talented Melbourne artist Warren Lane taking out the 2013 award with his â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Banquet of Gina and Giniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, which is a modern interpretation of the circa 1640 work, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Banquet of Esther and Ahasuerisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

HE new owners at The Enchanted Forest in Bright have travelled across the country to become part of the local tourism industry.

Husband and wife Stacy and Greg Kershaw moved to Bright in May 2012 after years planning a tree-change from Perth.

The pair had previously holidayed in the area and Mr Kershaw said â&#x20AC;&#x153;we kind of fell in love with the placeâ&#x20AC;?.

They came on board as new owners of the shop in March this year and Mr Kershaw said although the management had changed, the shop would still

retain its diverse range of products and high level of service.

The Enchanted Forest continues to stock a wide range of giftware, including greeting cards, soaps, candles and an array of ďŹ gurines, including fairies, dragons, woodland animals and more.

Mr Kershaw said that additional products may be added to the storeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s range in the future.

The exhibition will be once again held at King Valley Cucina, with the full support of the Sartori family, after the sad loss of Barbara Sartori. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She was such an integral part of the whole show,â&#x20AC;? said organising committee member Chris Hazell.

Organising committee members said that art show sponsors have continued with their generosity this year, with Dal Zotto Wines still putting forward the main prize, and new sponsors including Brown Brothers.

Catering at the exhibitionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gala opening is being organised by local chefs together with the

parents and teachers of WhitďŹ eld Primary School, in order to raise money for the school.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exhibition judge is Tasmanian born, Melbourne based artist Tom Alberts, who is highly respected in art circles.

Mr King hails from Sydney where he worked at places like Armstrongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Peats Bite and the Cruising Yacht Club before running his own catering company.

He has also been motivated to start making small batches of his own preserves that will be available in the shop.

N career and life, things have come full circle for Kerry and Nicholas Versteegen, the new owners of Myrtlefordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Heinerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bakery.

They took over the bakery in March this year, but their background with the business goes back two decades.

Both lifelong Myrtleford residents, Nicholas began there as an apprentice at age 16, while Kerry began working there

as a 15 year old, and after ďŹ rst meeting at the bakery, they have been married for many years.

Mrs Versteegen said that they were excited to have taken over the bakery and aim to continue with the great products and friendly service that the bakery is known for.

Heinerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bakery ďŹ rst opened its doors in 1966, and the Versteegens took over ownership of the bakery from previous

HE Wangaratta Stitched Up Festival is set to run again this winter, from July 6-14.

The festival has a sensational line up of stitchy fun, including exhibitions, workshops, crafternoons, demonstrations and a fantastic market by a range of makers and creators.

The festival coincides with Strictly Quilts presented by the RCoW quilters at St Bernardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Primary School, the Threads of Faith exhibition presented by the Friends of Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award at the Wangaratta Art Gallery and much more.

The Workshop Space at the Wangaratta Art Gallery will be â&#x20AC;&#x153;stitchy centralâ&#x20AC;? and should

The Workshop Space will host the Stitched Up competition entries.

Showcase of UFYUJMF BSUJTUSZ T HE Nationally signiďŹ cant Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award, presented by Wangaratta Art Gallery every second year since 2009, will again be a showcase of textile artistry and talent from across Australia this winter.

Forty-six artists working in contemporary textile-related media as varied as tapestry, sculpture, printing, dyeing, assemblage, embroidery, felting, digital projection, paper ďŹ bre, and natural grasses, have been selected for the award exhibition from over 160 entries from all over Australia.

The judge for the 2013 award is Kelly Gellatly, newly announced director of the Ian Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne and prior senior curator of

Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Ms Gellatly will announce the winner of the $8000 acquisitive award at the exhibition opening on Saturday, June 1 at 11am.

The prize will be awarded to one artist, the winning work will then become part of the Wangaratta Art Galleryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growing art collection.

In addition â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rebusâ&#x20AC;? of Beechworth has sponsored a Highly Commended award of $500.

An informative Textile Forum will also be held following the opening and award announcement with guest speakers and artist talks to be lead by the eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s patron and National Living Craft Treasure, textile artist Liz Williamson.

Wangaratta has a long and prominent history of textiles, both in manufacturing and as a craft form.

UROPEAN settlement in the tranquil town of Yackandandah dates back to the early 19th century.

Settlement in the area ďŹ rst followed in the footsteps of Hume and Hovell after 1824, and in the late 1840s, squatters began establishing their properties and pastoral runs.

The town was not immune to the gold rush, with gold being discovered in the area in 1852 and miners of many different nationalities seeking their fortunes in the area, in Yackandandah and many surrounding towns.

By the late 1850s, the town had become much more established.

Colonial establishments soon took the form of education, the Roads Board (1862) and Postal Services.

In 1861 the telegraph arrived, in the early 1890s the railway and the local newspaper.

Reef mining came and went, and large scale mining also made its mark in the latter part of the 19th century.

Today, the community remains as vibrant, diverse, and close knit as ever, and the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rich history is reďŹ&#x201A;ected in its streetscape, landmarks such as its bridges and memorial gardens, and more.
