Wealth of new talent for Tourism North East Board TWO new skills-based directors have brought an impressive depth of talent and experience to the Board of Tourism North East (TNE). TNE board chair, Paul Carrick, announced the vacant positions had been filled by Natalie O’Brien, the CEO of Melbourne Food & Wine Events, and Rosie Koop, an experienced arts and culture advisor and marketing strategist. The current CEO of Melbourne Food & Wine Events, Natalie O’Brien, has previously worked for Tourism Victoria in marketing, infrastructure and investment roles. She also has extensive board experience, currently as a director on the Parks Victoria board and the People and Parks Foundation, and previously on the boards of the Victorian Food Wine and Tourism Council (as chair), City of Melbourne Hospitality Advisory Board and The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. The second skills-based appointee, Rosie Koop, worked as a publisher at Harlequin Enterprises for many years before tree-changing to Glenrowan to run a sheep farm. Since then, her local strategic marketing-based roles have included work for Hothouse Theatre in Wodonga and Centre Against Violence in Wangaratta. She is a recent graduate and now board member of Alpine Valleys Community Leadership Inc, and an active member of the Advisory Committee for Arts, Culture and Heritage for Wangaratta Council.

New Victorian hunting manual to replace guide VICTORIAN hunters will soon receive a copy of the most comprehensive game hunting manual ever produced in Victoria. The new manual ‘Game Hunting in Victoria - a manual for responsible and sustainable hunting’ will be mailed out to all Victorian Game Licence holders and will replace the previous annual Victorian Hunting Guide. Hard copies will also be available from some DELWP, DEDJTR and GMA offices. Game Management Authority (GMA) chairperson Brian Hine said the new manual is an important

milestone that demonstrates the government’s commitment to responsible hunting in Victoria. “The new manual was developed in close consultation with hunting organisations and relevant government departments to assist game hunters in acting safely,
sustainably, humanely and legally,” Mr Hine said. “Delivered as part of the Victorian Government’s Sustainable Hunting Action Plan 2016 – 2020, the new comprehensive manual outlines the current laws, firearms safety, hunting methods and equipment, ethics,
survival skills and provides improved education and training for game hunters.” The guide is available at www.gma. vic.gov.au. Hunters are reminded to keep their personal copy of the new manual in a safe place as this more extensive manual will not be mailed out annually. An electronic version of this edition of the manual is now available on the Game Management Authority’s (GMA) website www.gma.vic.gov.au and future updated versions will be posted on the website as required. “The future of game hunting in Victoria depends upon ethical and responsible hunter behaviour and I urge all hunters to ensure they comply with the critical information contained in this manual,” Mr Hine said. Hunters are reminded to check the GMA website www.gma.vic.gov. au regularly to ensure they have the most up-to-date information available on game hunting and seasonal arrangements.

with an exclusive lunch in Melbourne, presenting the best regional produce their chefs uncovered during their regional forays. This year’s High Country Harvest officially opens in fine style on Friday, May 5 at Brown Brothers’ historic barn with a grand, candlelit dinner by Hatted chef, Douglas Elder. Over the following weeks the festival will offer visitors an amazing array of events, from informal campfire cookouts, to cooking, wine blending, cocktail mixing, coffee roasting and beer making with the experts. To warm the cockles on a crisp autumn night, festival favourites Village Bonfires return this year along with High Country Harvest warmers and menus at cafes and restaurants region-wide. The celebration will be held in spectacular settings right across the High Country, including Beechworth, Benalla, Bright, Glenrowan, Falls Creek, Mansfield, Milawa and the King Valley, Mount Beauty, Rutherglen and Tallangatta. Durif a perfect companion for a relaxed meal By ANITA M C PHERSON
Rutherglen Estates 2014 Durif (around $24) THERE is nothing quite like getting the barbecue fired up and cooking up a storm in the great outdoors. Whether you’ve got a baby-sized Hibachi, a gas four-burner or one of those glamorous outdoor kitchens that cost as much as a small car, it’s as much about the process as it is about the taste. Recently we’ve been getting into cooking over real charcoal and just getting it fired up and watching the smoke drift on the evening breeze is enough to whet the appetite. Pop on a well-seasoned T-bone, wait until the flames pipe up and lick the flesh and you’ve got yourself a bit of pure barbie magic with very little effort. We enjoyed our beefy feast with a bottle of Rutherglen Estates Durif, made from fruit growing

The Hoodoo Gurus and the Violent Femmes will headline the Saturday, March 18 concert, the 14th annual a day on the green in Rutherglen. Joining them will be The Whitlams, Tim Rogers and Models. ALBURY/WODONGA
Antiques and Collectables Fair a big draw THE Albury-Wodonga Antiques and Collectables Fair is returning again in 2017 with a host of new professional dealers as well as old favourites. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, in conjunction with the AlburyWodonga Antiques Fair Committee and The Zonta Club of AlburyWodonga, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. April 22-23 will see the Mirambeena Community Centre at Lavington transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the fair. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to twenty different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is also a fundraiser for Antiques Fair Committee and The Zonta Club

Experience a taste of the Border’s heritage TAKE an intimate glimpse into the lives of Australia’s post-war migrants at the Border’s heritage-listed Bonegilla Migrant Experience (BME). Located on the shores of Lake Hume and just 9km from Wodonga, visitors can weave their way through an interactive exhibition in a section of the former Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre. This self-guided tour sees visitors experience the journeys of the 300,000 migrants that passed through its doors over the years, from Europe, the United States and further afield. This autumn, BME is hosting two unique foodie experiences, giving participants a taste of making their very own artisan produce. On Saturday, April 8, Maree Roberts will teach those aged seven to 13 years how to make deliciously sweet chocolate truffles – just in time for Easter. The budding chefs can take part for just $15 per child and will return home with their creations to share.
INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE: Discover Border history at Bonegilla Migrant Experience.
For the cheese lovers, local cheese master Anna Pizzini will host two sessions on Saturday, May 6 to share the art of making halloumi. Join her from 10am to noon, or 1pm to 3pm, and leave with the skills to make your own batch at home. Further information about these events and BME are available online at bonegilla.org.au or by phoning (02) 60206912.
Tantalising Truffles Come and spend time bonding over melt-in-yourmouth truffles. Learn chocolate truffle making with Maree Roberts, and leave with the sweet treats you have created and instructions to make at home for Easter gifts.
Bookings for the events are essential and can be made via The Cube Wodonga at thecubewodonga. com.au/tickets or on (02) 6022 9311. Bonegilla Migrant Experience is open from 10am to 4pm daily (closed Anzac Day), with free entry to the self-guided tour. For a small cost, an optional guided tour is available at 11am each day.
The Art of Cheese Making Join us in learning the steps of cheese making from region’s master, Anna-Kate Pizzini. During this two-hour demonstration, Anna-Kate will take you through the process required to make your own halloumi cheese and give you the knowledge to try it yourself at home.

CELEBRATE the 2017 hops harvest with the High Country brewers at the third annual High Country Hops Festival on March 25. The event, taking place from 11am5pm, brings together like minded-craft brewers and the local growers of that vital brewing ingredient, hops. This family-friendly festival is a celebration of hops, and includes local food producers, musicians, performers, children’s activities and even some archery for the earlybirds. The festival brings together all seven High Country Brewery Trail brewers, including three recent arrivals, Rutherglen Brewery, Social Bandit (Mansfield) and Blizzard Brewery (Dinner Plain) who will be offering their beers away from their home base. The High Country Brewers all share strong links with each other and with local hop growers. Peter Hull from Sweetwater Brewing Co in Mount Beauty said the festival was a “fun day which showcases the breweries and beers of the High

Autumn festival taking shape ORGANISERS of one of Bright’s major festivals hope to add a different aspect to the program in 2017. Bright Autumn Festival president Brendan Holland said the committee is looking to hold more events at night, something the long standing festival has lacked over its 55 years. Mr Holland said 2016 saw a number of new activities successfully introduced to the 10-day festival, which celebrates life in the Alpine High Country. “Last year we had the woodwork and the ironwork workshops, the bush dance and the Instameet which were all quite successful,” he said. Aside from ghost and murder mystery tours put on by the Bright and District Historical Society, at the time of going to press there were few events after dusk, and the festival is hoping to add more to its evening schedule for this year. This year’s festival takes place from Friday, April

Italian heritage centre of La Fiera celebrations
NOW in its ninth year of celebration, Myrtleford’s La Fiera, hosted by the Myrtleford Chamber of Industry and Commerce, has grown to wonderfully successful proportions and is a major event in the Alpine High Country’s autumn season of festivals. La Fiera is a celebration of the Italian contribution to the region, highlighting the food, wines, music, dance and theatre. The town’s active Cicolo (Clubs) include the Trentini, Vincentini, and Trevisani from the northern Italian regions, and the Calabrese from the southern and Sicilian region. The fiesta begins on Tuesday, May 16 with an official opening at the cellar door of major festival sponsor, Michelini Wines, which promises to be an evening of excellent food, wines and music. Bookings must be made for this event. May 20-21 are the event days, for the large part, focused on, and in, the Myrtleford Piazza. Saturday begins with a mass in the Piazza and procession through the streets with the statue of St Anthony. There will also be a pizza dough throwing exhibition and workshop, Italian food and wine stalls throughout the day, entertainment
from people such as singer Toni Marchi and comedian James Liotta and more, a grape stomp competition, Tarantella School of Dance demonstration and workshop, a barista race, Nonni in Cucina cooking demonstration, children’s entertainment, and much more. Saturday afternoon will see a performance in the Piazza by Wangaratta West Primary School’s Italian choir. On Sunday, activities begin from 11.30am and include entertainment from Michael Tennace, Tastes of Trentino catering, a Commedia Dell’Arte presentation, a Living Chess Match, the La Fiera Cup Soccer Challenge, historical displays, movie screenings and more. Michelini Wines,Club Savoy, Gapsted Winery, Bastoni Pizzeria, Delizie Deli all present lunches and/or dinners over the six days, highlighting and featuring Italian cuisine. The gardens surrounding the Piazza square (giant chessboard and dancing area with stage) will be festooned with tables and chairs, with catering provided by up to 20 food and wine stalls, and together with non stop entertainment, good Italian food and local wines, will ensure that once again the weekend is a ‘sellout’. Discover local produce A NEW website has just been launched to showcase the diversity of fresh food grown in the region. The Mountains to Murray Local Produce Guide features over 100 local farm businesses and makes it easy for people to source local produce. The guide is an initiative of the North East Catchment Management Authority, with funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. “The Mountains to Murray Local Produce Guide is a celebration of the wonderful diversity of foods grown in North East Victoria and the Albury region, says Amber Croft, Regional Landcare Facilitator. “Everything from potatoes and pork, to saffron, capers and pumpkin seeds are grown by our local farmers. “We’re very lucky. “By purchasing locally-grown food, we’re supporting local
agricultural production and boosting our local economy, plus we’re reducing our environmental impact because our food isn’t coming from the other side of the country, or the other side of the world. The new website includes the categories of fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, eggs and dairy, nuts and seeds, oils, honey, and herbs and spices. Farm businesses can register to be added to the guide at any time, free of charge, via the website. “Buying direct from our local farmers at the farm gate or farmers market, we’re also building a sense of community by developing relationships with the people who grow our food, says Ms Croft. “And we’re teaching our kids where their food comes from. Check out the new guide at www. localproduceguide.com.au and embrace fresh, seasonal produce.

Historic Huts across the Alps undergo repairs BINDAREE, Howitt and McNamara’s huts have all been the subject of recent repair works after Parks Victoria banded together with members of the community to help return them to their former glory. All three huts are well known to local campers, hunters and recreational users – with Bindaree Hut located off the Mount Stirling Circuit Road. Parks Victoria senior rangerMansfield, Fleur Smith, said it never ceased to amaze her how generous volunteers could be when it came to help restore historic huts in the area. “At the recent Bindaree Hut working

bee, we had a team of three volunteers from the VHCHA as well as 12 volunteers from the Mansfield Four Wheel Drive Club,” she said. “There were also members of the Mansfield community, who led the chimney rebuilding team, as well as Ang Golin who was there bricklaying, and who did a beautiful job in laying the bricks for the rebuilt fireplace.” Parks Victoria has spent the last 15 years developing a partnership with the Victorian High Country Huts Association (VHCHA), and are proud
that the two groups are able to work in conjunction with each other. Wayne Peterken, from the VHCHA, oversaw the recent Howitt Hut project on the Howitt Plains in the High Country, and said the hut was in a precarious state before they got there. “Our volunteers had their work cut out for them at Howitt Hut to undertake a series of repairs in such a short time frame including renovation of the fireplace, chimney and mantle, along with replacement of key posts that support the rear of the structure,” he explained.
“We will continue to do further works during 2017 to complete the restoration of Howitt Hut as it’s a project we have all enjoyed, despite the many challenges we faced.” Parks Victoria ranger team leader Mt Beauty, Kevin Cosgriff, said the work on restoring McNamara’s Hut was now complete after teams had spent days working on the hut. “In early 2016, the volunteers worked together to undertake an archaeological recovery, rebuild the chimney, hut reconstruction and complete the drainage works,” he explained of the mammoth task. “Then in December, the team reconvened to finalise the remaining works including the reframing of the Chaff House, completing the floor and a general tidy up of the area. “We were excited to finally complete the restoration of McNamara’s Hut, and we look forward to the Centenary Celebration with the volunteers and community members in spring 2017.” For more information on the Victorian High Country Huts association, go to the website at https://hutsvictoria.org.au/.

The Working Equitation event will be held over two days at the Forge family property at Oxley on April 22 and 23. Up to 32 teams will do battle in a four-phase competition based on methods for working cattle. The event, being staged by Working Equitation North East Victoria (WENEV), hopes to pave the way
for more competitions in the state in what is a relatively new horse sport in Australia. Londrigan resident and event secretary Renee Paola, said the sport is a great spectacle due to its unique format. She said the competition comprises of a dressage phase, two ease of handling phases - one judged on style and the other on speed - and a team cattle component.
“We have dressage riders, cutting, camp drafting, western and endurance riders all training and competing together which is not something that usually happens in horse sport,” Ms Paola said. “It would be like mountain bike riders competing against road bike riders which means horses and trainers need to be truly versatile to get through the four phases.” Ms Paola will be among a number

New site a one-stop shop for cyclists TOURISM North East has launched a new website, ridehighcountry.com.au , giving visitors to the region a onestop-shop for all things cycling, covering road, mountain biking and recreational rail trails. The site will inspire riders to travel to the High Country and also provide detailed information for seamless trip planning with suggested cycling routes, comprehensive trail mapping, cycle friendly accommodation options, transport providers, bike hire and cycle touring companies. This will ensure that all of their cycle tourism needs are catered for by one easy to use portal. The High Country is one of Australia’s leading cycling hotspots, offering fantastic experiences for all interests and levels. There are more than 250 km of safe, sealed off-road rail trails through vineyards, farmland and picturesque villages and for

beginners to experienced riders, five fantastic mountain bike hubs at Bright, Mount Beauty, Beechworth/ Yackandandah, Falls Creek and Mount Buller.
For road warriors, there are seven challenging alpine peaks to climb up, and coast down. “The High Country has long been acknowledged as having
the strongest cycle tourism credentials in the state, featuring three signature rail trails, the only internationally recognised mountain bike trails in the Southern Hemisphere, and the toughest and most popular road cycling rides in the country,” said Amber Gardner, CEO of Tourism North East. “We’re now looking to unify this significant offering with a new regional Ride High Country brand that will lead marketing efforts to establish the High Country as the premier bike destination in Victoria,” she said. In line with this new strategic direction , a $310,000 State Government grant was announced late last year for the development of a North East Victoria Cycling Optimisation master plan to develop a coordinated regional approach to cycle tourism in the High Country taking into account infrastructure investment, marketing and private sector involvement.

Pedals, produce and partying in the King Valley THIS Easter, families are encouraged to come and join the community of Moyhu in the King Valley for the inaugural King Valley Easter Escape. It is set to be a family friendly event being held in and around the village of Moyhu - The Gateway to the King Valley – and will feature a produce market, recreational cycling, and night entertainment. Discover this little slice of Italy located at the foothills of the Alpine National Park, surrounded by mountains, rivers and rolling vineyards, and head into Moyhu, voted the “friendliest town during the 2014 Great Victorian Bike Ride. The King Valley boasts some of the best camping in Victoria, with great campsites and beautiful autumn weather. Begin your weekend with coffee, breakfast and a stroll at the Moyhu Farmers’ and Community Market where fresh autumn produce will be available in the shady Lions Park. Pedal your way through the picturesque valley on sealed quiet country roads. Choose from 25km, 57km or 82km. Lunch for riders is included in their ride entry fee. Space is limited on the rides so get in quick. The shortest ride is quite easy while the other two provide some challenging sections. Saturday afternoon presents an opportunity to visit the other attractions of the King Valley including the King Valley Dairy, wineries, cafes, pubs, lookouts, swimming holes and waterfalls. As afternoon moves to evening the village of Moyhu turns the lights on and the Easter Escape festival begins.

YEA
Historic Yea a joy to explore THERE is much more to Yea than first meets the eye. Take a stroll around the township itself and you can find some interesting buildings - many dating back to the mid 1800s. In fact there are 27 heritage sites listed on the Yea Heritage walk – some that stand out the most include the Yea Post Office built in 1890, Yea Shire Hall 1894, Railway Station which is described as being the best remaining example of Gothic style stations in Victoria, the Marmalades building built 1897 and formerly the commercial store. The railway station is the site of the Yea Markets – regularly held and growing in popularity. But there is also a walk in the wetlands – cross the waterways on bridges and wooden walkways; observe the bird life within the wetlands and marvel at how they survive in a lush setting – many nesting during the spring months. A little out of town is Cheviot Tunnel – a key piece of Yea’s history.
RIDING THROUGH: Popular with Yea visitors is the Cheviot Tunnel now a part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail – this is an Inside look at the tunnel’s red clay bricks.
The tunnel was a part of the Tallarook to Mansfield rail line which operated between 1883 and 1978. The tunnel was constructed using handmade clay bricks from a clay pit near its site – a
staggering 675,000 of them. Today the tunnel is open as part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail which runs from Tallarook to Mansfield.
