Stellar jazz and blues festival in the works
Hit the
road SCAT TO IT: Australian jazz legend James Morrison is among the performers at this year’s Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival.
OFF the back of a hugely successful 2015 program, the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival is preparing to welcome back jazz cats, blues enthusiasts and music lovers to jitterbug and jive for another stellar festival in 2016. Now in its 27th year and with a 2016 line-up that is sure to hit all the high notes, the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival is the perfect opportunity for music enthusiasts to unwind and enjoy a jam-packed long weekend of premium jazz and blues from a stellar line-up of Australian and international musicians. Over the last weekend in October – October 28-30 - festival goers will be treated to the musical delights of more than 300 musicians in over 80 concerts, across seven concert locations. More than just a music festival, the 2016 program will also see the streets of Wangaratta come alive with live art events, a buskers’ boulevard and window art – making Jazz and Blues a family affair. Artistic director Adrian Jackson says the diverse program of local artists, alongside a host of up and coming international acts, makes this year’s program particularly unique. “The international line-up features some outstanding up and coming artists, including the remarkable talent that is the Mississippi Diva, JJ Thames (USA), Chilean native and saxophonist Melissa Aldana, and the contemporary jazz delights of the Ronan Guilfoyle Trio (IRE),” said Mr Jackson. “The Australian line-up is equally
strong with the hugely popular James Morrison, the unstoppable Pierce Brothers, ARIA award winning pianist Barney McAll, veteran blues soloist, Geoff Achison, rising jazz chanteuse Kimba Griffith and soulful nine-piece outfit, The Bamboos. “This year’s program also features a plethora of extremely talented female bandleaders and soloists, including, Shannon Barnett, Sandy Evans, Andrea Keller, Bridie King, Kellie Santin, Zoe Black, Tamara Murphy, Belinda Woods and Mary Doumany,” he added. Festival chair Paul Squires says the range of ticketing options and the seven performance venues ensure that all music tastes and budgets are catered for. “We have a range of ticketing options that start from as little as $30. “A Weekend Pass at our King George Gardens stage will set you back $50 and includes an outdoor entertainment, cross-over music on the open air stage and access to local food and wine. “For those after the full Jazz and Blues music experience, the highly sought after festival Gold Pass offers unlimited access, guaranteed seating, and no queues, in all seven concert venues.” Visitors to the high country can also take advantage of the flexible Festival Pass, which provides access to all shows with the flexibility to build in regional activities over the weekend. Tickets for the 2016 Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival are on sale now and can be purchased from www. wangarattajazz.com.

THE Rutherglen wine region has seen a strong increase in visitation over the last 18 months, with Rutherglen wines experiencing a renaissance amongst wine lovers, in particular fortified wines. Muscat is seeing increased sales and popularity in the region, thanks to some concerted marketing efforts from Winemakers of Rutherglen, Destination Rutherglen and the Indigo Shire Council. Belinda Chambers, Chair of Winemakers of Rutherglen explains, “Across the board Rutherglen is experiencing a resurgence in demand for fortified wine as the market expands into younger age brackets. “There is a noticeable shift towards a younger fortified drinker.” The federal government and Indigo Shire Council, along with private contributors, are investing

more than $1.8 million on upgrades and improvements to the Rutherglen township. Indigo Shire Mayor Cr James Trenery said the Council had confidence in the potential for growth of the Rutherglen region. “We are spending $1.84 million on Rutherglen to boost economic growth and tourism, and just recently the Federal Government announced $2 million funding for planning on an alternative heavy vehicle route to get trucks out of the Main Street of Rutherglen. “This is all very positive and points to a growing economy in the Rutherglen region.” Winemakers of Rutherglen, Destination Rutherglen and the Indigo Shire Council are all working closely to further build on the strong economic climate in Rutherglen.

Celebrate ‘the sweet life’ at King Valley wine and food festival WINES of the King Valley will host the eternally popular La Dolce Vita wine and food festival this spring, November 19-20. Visitors are invited to purchase a ticket, which includes a tasting glass to take home, and visit 11 participating wineries throughout the region. Wineries offer tastings of new release and museum release wines, authentic cuisine prepared by Nonna or a renowned local chef, live music, roving entertainers, competitions, kids’ activities, masterclasses and more. “This is an opportunity to experience life in the King Valley the way we know it – time with friends, family and great food, in a beautiful setting. “The chance to discover a new favourite wine is always exciting, too - here you get to speak to the person who grew the grapes and made the wine,”

says Alison Lloyd, marketing officer for the group. “It’s such a lovely day out; I highly recommend using your ticket across both days and trying to visit every one of our eleven unique wineries.” Participating wineries this year include Brown Brothers, Sam Miranda, Merkel Wines, Symphonia, La Cantina, Dal Zotto, Darling Estate, Pizzini, Politini, Chrismont and Francesco Wines. BEECHWORTH
Oktoberfest, Australian style in Beechworth BEECHWORTH’S craft-brewery Bridge Road Brewers is hosting its 12th annual Oktoberfest. Located in the heart of town, this small brewery has a swag of awards to its name, and is ready for this year’s celebration of beer and music. The event is based around the original Oktoberfest held in Munich in late September each year. The authenticity of this event is
bolstered not only by the OhmPah band, traditional outfits and cuisine, but also by the beer brewed especially for the occasion. As is tradition in Munich, Bridge Road also brew their own Marzen, or Oktoberfest beer, more than two months ahead of the event. Brewery founders, Ben Kraus and his partner Maria Frischmann, have strong links to the Oktoberfest.
Maria hails from the heart of the Tyrol region in Austria and has worked as a bier-maid at the Munich Oktoberfest. Ben gained his brewing knowledge in the same region and has been brewing the Bridge Road beers for a little over six years. Visitors are encouraged to dress in the traditional Lederhosen or Dirndl (traditional Bavarian dress) and enjoy the festivities.
The Beechworth Oktoberfest will be held at Bridge Road Brewers, off Ford St, behind Tanswells Hotel, rear access from High Street. It will be held between 11am-6pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 8-9. Tickets are set to sell out quickly, so get in quickly to avoid disappointment. For more information see www. bridgeroadbrewers.com.au, or the brewery’s Facebook and Twitter feeds.
RAISE A GLASS: Enjoy the fun of Oktoberfest.
FROM November 4-6, Beechworth’s annual Celtic Festival is once again set to entertain all those enthusiastic about Celtic music and culture. The packed schedule will include markets, bands, activities, Celtic dancing and much more.
Access to all activities/locations except market sites will be via a wrist band purchased at sites or the information kiosk on the day – single $15, couples $20 and family $25. For more information, see www.beechworthcelticfestival. com.au.

AROUND THE REGION
The Beechworth Sweet Co – “Tasting is Believing” A VISIT to Beechworth Sweet Co is sensory overload in a shop full of confectionery, which smells and tastes amazing. Add to that everything that is bright and colourful with lots of children’s and adult novelty gift lines. Fairies and dinosaurs abound. There are lots of children’s lollies, or introduce them to some old time favourites like boiled lollies or licorice blocks. Maybe choose something made by The Beechworth Sweet Co like exploding toads or chocolate pizzas. If you are looking for gifts there are jars and tins of selected products for you to choose from, like packs of licorice, Turkish delight and ginger for those with a specific taste. There are handmade chocolates in boxes or make up your own selection. The staff take pride in selecting a wide range of Australian made product along with other favourites from around the world especially Dutch licorice, and many English products.
It is, however, the fudge and nougat made on the premises that is really special. There are packs already made up or, pick out your own choice of flavours. The hardest part is choosing, as they all taste fantastic. Each season the flavours change so there is
always something different as well as the year round favourites. But then there is chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. The team can’t wait to see you at The Beechworth Sweet Co and introduce you to their world of sweet treats.

CELEBRATING its 26th year, the Bright Spring Festival (October 15-November 1) showcases the Alpine Valley coming alive, with blooms and birds putting on nature’s showcase. Bright and surrounding towns are a display of new life: cheeky bulbs in all colors, delicate roses, dogwood flowers everywhere and trees bursting into lush green foliage. The Bright Spring Festival showcases what the Great Alpine Valleys is all about; great cafes and restaurants, access to three wine regions, accommodation to suit all budgets, gardens, adventure sports, walking tracks and bike trails, street and river markets, art exhibitions, theatre, expos and workshops and a natural beauty not found elsewhere in Victoria. New gardens will be added to the
poets and published authors, including Carter and Carter, Sylvia Fraser and Ester de Boer (October 21-23), including a showcase concert starring Carter and Carter, and some workshop participants (October 22). For all things handmade, home grown or home cooked enjoy the Bright Make it Bake it Grow It Market (October 15) and don’t forget Rotary’s Monster Street Market (October 31). If recycling is your thing then look for treasures and pre-loved household items at the All Town Garage Sale Bonanza (October 29). A fabulous feature of the Spring Festival is of course the Grand Fireworks Spectacular, this annual event is full of fun and entertainment for the whole family including a petting zoo, market and of course fireworks and is on Melbourne Cup weekend (October 29). The Alpine Equine Extravaganza is a fully catered, no hassle, fun filled weekend (October 7-9). For further information visit www. brightspringfestival.com.au or email brightspringfestival@gmail.com.

FROM the roar of the water and white-water rapids to the towering cliffs and inviting lagoons, it’s no surprise Victoria’s waterfalls have been capturing imaginations for thousands of years. With rainfall at its highest throughout winter and spring, there is no better time of year to check them out. Steavenson Falls One of Victoria’s highest waterfalls, Steavenson Falls is located just outside of Marysville, a short drive from Buxton. A 700 metre return-walk leads to a viewing platform just below the falls that plummet over 80 metres. Floodlit between dusk and midnight, the spectacular falls are just a three kilometre drive from the heart of town. Alternatively visitors can take the Tree Fern Gully Trail, a scenic 3.4 kilometre return walk to the base of the falls and back. Snobs Creek Falls In the High Country, Snobs Creek Falls drop more than 100 metres over a series of rocky outcrops. A number of observation platforms are

Barrel racing coming to Merrijig in September MERRIJIG’S first ever Barrel Racing Series came closer to fruition recently, when Latoya Wards invited all those interested in helping out to put up their hands. Held at McCormack Park, the same venue the Series will use, residents, competitors and volunteers were all encouraged so that preparation can begin to get the first event under way. Recent news that the Chiltern Barrels and Buckles Series will not
run in 2016 boosted hopes that the Merrijig Series could potentially benefit, with many competitors looking for somewhere to run their horses. At this stage, the first round of the series is due to be held on September 24. The event will be organised by current Australian Rodeo Queen and barrel racer, Latoya Wards. The Olive Shop is the store that offers more - from food to gifts THE Olive Shop may be named in honour of the tasty green fruit, but the store is not just about all things olive. There isn’t a corner, shelf or counter here that isn’t filled with something utterly delicious and delightful. Handcrafted pieces, EVOO organic skincare products and olive related ceramics all jostle for space with a cool range of books and cards. It’s about regional condiments, handmade nutty dukkahs, gourmet dressings, rustic wooden hamper boxes and a range of produce to taste, all set out on a long river red gum counter. Spring now sees new season oils
flowing with local boutique groves releasing their oil and olives. Try a bottle of agrumato citrusinfused oil drizzled over salad or a risotto dish. Use walnut oil directly on your face and massage it onto your body skin. Olive oil makes an excellent treatment to apply before washing your hair. Each season also sees an eclectic range of scarves, wraps, books and gifts carefully chosen by Anna-Maria to suit all budgets. The Olive Shop and Provender is open daily from 10am at 1065 Snow Road, Milawa. Phone (03) 57273887 or email contact@theoliveshop.com.au.

Milawa Cheese wins gold at Australian Food Awards GOLD by name and gold by notoriety, Milawa Cheese Company’s ‘King River Gold’ recently won Gold in the 2016 Australian Food Awards ‘Washed Rind’ category. The cheese, one of the first of its kind produced in Australia by Milawa Cheese Company, has become an iconic product in Australia’s artisan cheese industry. Milawa Cheese Company’s Ceridwen Brown describes it as having the ‘smelly socks’ aroma that many European cheeses are celebrated for. Don’t let the pungent aroma scare you away though, the King River Gold is a multiple award winner for good reason. The taste of this cow’s milk cheese is nutty, slightly smoky and delicious. The awards didn’t stop there for the local innovators, Steve Russell (head cheesemaker) and his team also took out a silver for their Milawa Brie. David and Annie Brown bought the old Milawa Dairy Factory on Factory Road, Milawa and set about producing handmade artisan cheese and they are making it the same way today. These award winning cheeses are available for purchase and tastings at the Milawa Cheese Cellar door and restaurant, seven days a week between 10am and 5pm. The Milawa Cheese Factory is open from 9am for breakfast, 11:30 for lunch and all day for cheese tastings and sales. It is located at 17 Factory Road, Milawa and more information is available on (03) 57273589 or on their website at www.milawacheese.com.au.

See you in the crowd at the Oxley Bush Market MAKE sure to ‘ink in’ the 37th Annual Oxley Bush Market for a visit on Saturday, October 29 at the historic Oxley Shire Hall. Staged on the weekend of the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, this market commences at 9am and is in full swing until 3pm. It features over 170 stalls with an unbelievable range of homemade, home grown, home-produced and new items, with something on offer for all visitors. The Oxley Shire Hall Committee, which organises the event, is anticipating another extremely successful ‘market day’, and hall secretary, Janet Heath, said the bargains on offer again promise to be ‘amazing’. “Apart from the great support we receive from local stallholders, many also travel long distances to the market and large crowds are again expected to flock to Oxley,” she said. “The atmosphere of the event is fantastic, with visitors purchasing goods, meeting up and talking with old friends, and children having rides and lucky dips.” While many of the stallholders are regulars to the market, this year again sees numerous ‘first timers’ hawking their wares. Gourmet food, drinks and toe-tapping music will add to the festive atmosphere. “The market is in full swing right up until closing

stallholders and visitors alike to ‘put the right thing in the right bin’. Entry is free, and dogs are not permitted (guide dogs excepted). The market is also a ‘no smoking’ event. For further information, go to www.oxley.vic.au email oxleyhall@gmail.com or phone 0437 243 583.

TALLANGATTA
Enjoy the 1950s vibe and more in Tallangatta THE bouncy, infectious sounds and sights of yesteryear will once again rule Tallangatta this spring as part of the Tallangatta Fifties Festival on October 29-30. With events covering everything from markets to music performances and dances, and even a show and shine, there will be plenty to do to keep the whole family amused. The schedule is packed with great performers, including Wilbur Wilde and the Trouble Makers, and The Rockin Daddys. Vocalist and saxman, Wilbur Wilde has been a fixture on the Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll music scene since Ol’55 got together in Sydney in 1975. Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons occupied another four years before he joined the cast of Hey Hey It’s Saturday for sixteen years. Meanwhile, the Rockin Daddys are a Melbourne based Rockabilly band that has quickly become one of the most in demand Rockabilly bands in Australia. The band currently comprises Cliff Jolly (Cliffy) on lead vocals, Ben Guest (The Undertaker) on lead guitar, Robby Sharrock (Slap) on slap bass and Frankie Dabaco (Boom Boom) on drums. More information is available on www. tallangattafifties.com.au.

JUST moments from Wangaratta is this rugged waterfall, one of the major waterfalls in the Warby-Ovens National Park that has benefited from the wet winter experienced in the North East. The Briens Gorge falls are situated near the Jubilee Golf Club. To get there, take Wangandary Road off the WangarattaYarrawonga Road and follow it until you reach Jubilee Road. From there, head towards the golf club but take a left at Grandview Road, where signs will point you towards the Briens Gorge car park. Take a short walk along the path a few hundred metres and you can
witness the falls, which feed into an underground spring. There are picnic facilities near the car park and it is a tranquil spot to enjoy the bushland and local flora and fauna. Visitors are urged to keep safety in mind at all times, including wearing appropriate footwear, staying on the tracks provided, and avoiding wet and slippery areas in and around the waterfall. For more information on the attractions in the area including other nearby waterfalls, visit parkweb.vic.gov.au or speak to the friendly staff at your nearest visitor information centre.
