Mountain enjoyment, whatever the season LAKE Mountain is Melbourne’s closest and most affordable alpine resort, offering a mountain of fun all year round.

From June to September, Lake Mountain transforms into a winter wonderland providing an ideal first time snow experience.

The mountain offers over 30 kilometres of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with an abundance of snow play areas and toboggan runs.

A range of adventure activities are also available, including a dual 240 metre flying fox, outdoor laser skirmish and an exhilarating tube run.

Snowmaking facilities ensure a guaranteed snow cover for snow play and tobogganing throughout the season, regardless of temperature or natural snow conditions.

The Snowsports School and Fischer Nordic Demo Centre confirm Lake Mountain’s position as the premier

cross-country skiing mountain, with world-class instructors and equipment bringing skiers back year after year.

2016 brought the launch of the new Burton Riglet Park, giving kids aged 3–6 years the chance to try out snowboarding.

During the warmer months the trails are great for walking, with many scenic lookouts, spectacular wildflowers and regenerating forest.

Lake Mountain is popular for both mountain biking and road cycling during the green season.

The Lake Mountain Café is open Friday to Monday during the green season, offering visitors delicious meals, coffee and local wines.

A giant Jurassic themed Jumping Castle is inflated inside, and a range of different sized mountain bikes are available to hire – all including a helmet.

AROUND THE REGION

THERE is plenty going on across the North East’s snow resorts this winter.

After a record breaking year for visitors in 2016, Falls Creek is gearing up for another season of snow-fuelled fun in winter 2017.

With snow tubing, tobogganing, kids snowmobiles and weekly fireworks shows, kids and families enjoy an amazing time in the fluffy white stuff without too much pressure on the budget.

The best part is, all of this snowplay fun is kept in the one village-based location and even has a free chairlift ride from the car park.

Recently, the Mount Hotham Skiing Company has invested millions into expanded snowmaking coverage, with the final stage of the Summit area expected to be

running this season.

Among the many initiatives for this year are their new Max 7 lessons, which see guests receive more personalised tuition and quicker progression with maximum group size of only seven guests, meaning extra instruction and more individual feedback.

As well, in 2017 all rental purchases of four days or greater will now include rest days as do lift tickets, and there are plenty of progams, events and more to help visitors enjoy the mountain throughout winter.

Mount Buffalo is set to once again appeal as a family mountain this year.

The mountain will offer toboggan and snow play areas, with two managed areas at the national park at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley.

For those who prefer walking, there is a marked walking route at both Dingo Dell and Cresta to enjoy, or well prepared walkers can use one of the other established walking tracks on the mountain.

11 PLENTY OF FUN: Thousands of people enjoy the Winery Walkabout every year.

Highlight on the Rutherglen calendar

THE legendary Winery Walkabout is on again on June 10-11, and it’s anticipated that more than 15,000 wine lovers will descend on Rutherglen to enjoy the great wine, food trucks, live music and much more.

Now in its 43rd year, Winery Walkabout has become a fixture on the calendar for almost everyone living on the border, plus many more from far and wide.

With massive crowds expected to enjoy the revelry and atmosphere at the 19 participating wineries, it’s expected to be bigger and better than ever.

With a program of great wine, food from around the world, impressive live music acts, fun games and masterclasses, VIP experiences and plenty of evening activities, Winery Walkabout continues to be an unmissable event for many.

The Rutherglen Country Fair will be on again on Sunday, June 11,

with hundreds of stalls, great food, and the famous grape stomping and barrel rolling competitions keeping the crowds entertained.

Regional buses and winery shuttle buses will again run in 2017, making it easy and safe to enjoy Winery Walkabout.

The regional bus services the towns of Corowa, Wahgunyah, Yarrawonga, Mulwala, Bundalong, Wangaratta, Chiltern, Beechworth, Howlong, Albury and Wodonga.

The winery shuttle bus runs a hop on/hop off service to all 19 participating wineries every half hour.

For those bringing private buses, coaches or limousines, you will need to register your vehicle before booking in to each winery you want to visit.

Hotel Mitchelton set to open soon THE Nagambie region is on the verge of an exciting tourism boost with the establishment of a 58 room boutique hotel and day spa facility at Mitchelton Winery which will open its doors to the public in late spring.

Mitchelton is an established winery and hospitality destination.

The inclusion of a boutique residential hotel will complement and enhance these activities.

The hotel will also enable Mitchelton Winery to establish itself as a self-contained conference and seminar venue, only 1.5 hour’s drive from Melbourne.

The hotel will boast an attractive form which is modern and striking, yet complementary to the site’s location on the banks of the Goulburn River and the Robin Boyd influenced architectural style of the existing winery and restaurant buildings.

CENTRE OF ART: GIGS Art Gallery is offering patrons a unique opportunity to become involved in the arts.

Keeping regional art Pozible GIGS Art Gallery and Studios is thrilled to be in a position to play a pivotal role in the development of the arts in the regional areas especially on the Victoria/New South Wales border.

Established eight years ago with the support of the Wodonga City Council, GIGS Art Gallery is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit gallery located in the Gateway Arts Precinct on the Lincoln Causeway, Wodonga.

With two exhibition spaces, a gallery shop, workshop space and seven studios, GIGS provides local artists with a unique opportunity to showcase and sell their works.

The gallery has been fortunate in the past to receive grants that assist with the running of the space.

According to GIGS Gallery coordinator, Erika Grimes, “for GIGS to continue in the future, it is critical that our gallery become self-sustaining.

“To do this we envision creating a warm and inviting indoor and outdoor space and updating to modern and efficient internal systems.”

On June 5, for the first time, GIGS is offering limited sponsorship and support packages via a Pozible crowd-funding campaign supported by Regional Arts Victoria.

A successful campaign will allow GIGS to invest in much-needed items such as a new printer, cataloguing system, outdoor heater, catering cart, display equipment and a projector and screen.

Erika stated, “with these purchases the gallery can move into the 21st century with confidence,

continuing to be an important platform for regional artists.

“Additionally, the gallery can be utilised as a unique meeting and small events venue.”

Local artist Milinda Hamilton agrees.

“Without GIGS Gallery, I would not have had the opportunity to have my first exhibition last year,” she said.

“It’s a great space and the support was fantastic”.

Mayor welcomes tourism funding ALBURY City mayor Kevin Mack has welcomed news that the Murray Regional Tourism Organisation (MRTO) will receive continued NSW Government funding.

The organisation will receive $90,000 per year until 2019, after a review into tourism led by the NSW Department of Industry, with the support of the NSW Cross Border Commissioner.

Member for Albury Greg Aplin said the Murray region is unique and the NSW Government has committed to funding the MRTO, the only cross-border, jointly funded Regional Tourism Organisation.

“The Department of Industry review recommended continued funding of the MRTO with revised governance arrangements to ensure MRTO can work effectively to help deliver NSW Government commitments,” Mr Aplin said.

“In addition to funding, an implementation and change plan will be developed, which sets out new roles and responsibilities for both MRTO and the Riverina Murray Destination Network.

This will enable both organisations to work together in their efforts to promote the region.”

Giant Steps - a chance to give back THIS year’s Kerferd Oration is to be delivered by Barry Irvin AM, the executive chairman of Bega Cheese.

Mr Irvin has extensive experience in the dairy industry and has been chairman of Bega Cheese since 2000.

Under his leadership Bega Cheese has grown from a small regionally based dairy company to one of the largest dairy companies in Australia, supplying a large range of dairy products in Australia and around the world.

Barry is also chairman of Giant Steps, which supports children and families dealing with the challenges of autism, and is a director of the Gardiner Foundation, which funds leadership programs, study tours, scholarships and in the disciplines of dairy production and marketing, and farm business management.

“I have always believed in giving back, giving a hand up, helping those in need,” Mr Irvin said.

“In my life I have great demonstrations of that, as people have been so generous to me; at first they wanted to help me with my autistic son Matthew and later help in developing and growing Giant Steps.

“The strength and wisdom of the collective has been demonstrated to me over and over again in both my business and charitable activities.”

Happiness is a sandy beach at Lake Sambell IMPROVEMENTS to Sandy Beach at Lake Sambell in Beechworth started in March with construction of two retaining walls. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The walls will ensure the beach remains sandier for longer -- and help prevent the lake silting up -- and will provide seating and convenience to swimmers and sight-seers,â&#x20AC;? State dollars for Chiltern redevelopment INDIGO Shire Council has welcomed a Victorian government commitment to boost Chiltern’s development.

Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria) announced an additional $300,000 from the Andrews Government for a town centre development and connectivity project.

The funding includes $200,000 from the Victorian regional jobs and infrastructure fund and $100,000 from VicRoads.

The fresh funding follows the provision of $238,000 in December

last year for a Children’s Early Years Hub as part of Indigo’s Chiltern community ‘placemaking’ project.

Ms Symes said Chiltern’s precincts would be better connected with a network of pedestrian and cycling paths between the town’s business and recreation areas.

Indigo council will deliver the project, which will provide a co-ordinated series of pedestrian and cycle ways to connect the key precincts of town and highlight Chiltern’s entrance.

“The Chiltern town centre and connectivity project will help to create an attractive, even more liveable Chiltern that capitalises on its economic, community and social assets,” Ms Symes said.

“Labor has provided more than $500,000 towards projects in Chiltern and if the federal Coalition government funds its share we will have the town at its absolute best.”

Indigo mayor Jenny O’Connor

said the community and council were hopeful an application for $975,000 from the federal government’s Building Better Regions Fund would be successful.

She said it would bring the $2.2 million placemaking community identity and development project together.

“The state’s contribution today is a vital part of that – it demonstrates faith in the project.”

Exciting new activities at Dinner Plain A TRIP to the snow just got even better, with Dinner Plain set to host two new exciting activities this winter: ice skating and alpine laser skirmish.

For the first time ever, Dinner Plain will offer winter visitors the opportunity to go ice skating in the snow.

A pop-up rink will operate in the village centre during the school holidays between July 8-16.

Ice skates and penguins (to help young children learn to skate) are available at the rink.

On top of that, laser skirmish is making its outdoor snow debut.

Run by Great Alpine Adventures out of Crisps Hut in Dinner Plain – where you’ll also find Howling Husky Sled Dog Tours – grab some friends and get ready for an action-packed frolic in the snow.

Adding to the fun, this year all Dinner Plain lift passes on the beginner ski slope include access to the Tube Slide, which is normally $19 for a session.

MOUNT Buffalo has some of the best and most accessible snow play in Victoria, and it’s free, as there are no resort fees to enter the park.

The mountain has extensive areas of snow at both Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley for snow play and tobogganing, cross country skiing or just enjoying the view.

Rustic reminder of Milawa’s early days

By STEVE KELLY MILAWA is known nationally for its exemplary wine and award winning cheese but when driving into the small town on the Snow Road, there’s a building that everyone notices, but not much is known about it.

A glance to the left on the corner of Woodberry Road is an old flour mill that’s been in the family of the same name since the late 1800s.

Norm and Joy Woodberry still work the land it sits on and the iconic, rustic structure has been

well photographed over the years.

It’s been a backdrop of many couples’ wedding days, curious tourists’ photo scrapbooks, or even the subject adorning an artist’s easel.

Beneath the intrigue lies a story about the past, a solid building that generations of the Woodberry family still look at as part of their daily scenery.

Norm’s grandparents George and Ellis Woodberry bought the land in about 1890 and with it came the Oxley Steam Flour Mill building.

The five acres was for sale when the mill business, owned by William Allan, relocated to Wangaratta due to transport issues.

When the building was built in the late 1850s, bricks were made on the property and the house that Norm and Joy still live in was built at the same time.

The icon status of the mill partly comes because there’s not many like it in Victoria, with two others that Norm and Joy know about in Portarlington – made of stone - on the Mornington Peninsula, and one at Kyneton.

Passionate about cheese making process AMONG the cheesemakers at Milawa Cheese Company is Jack Condron, who recently stepped up to head cheesemaker.

He started at Milawa cheese in April 2013 where he was working retail in the cheese shop.

“While I was there I was asked many questions about the cheese making process, so I got permission to do a bit of work in the factory itself to gain a better understanding of our cheeses and provide accurate answers for our customers,” he said.

“During these shifts I really became enamoured with the process, so I progressively started working more and more in the factory “When I expressed my interest in cheese making the guys really took me under their wing and I just tried to soak in everything they were telling me.

“I secured the role of assistant cheese maker when Luke Armstrong left in mid-2014.

“Luckily for me I had Tony Peterson (head cheese maker) who really showed me the ins and outs of cheese making on a daily basis until he left in early 2016.

“I then assumed the role of head cheese maker and have worked in close conjunction with Stephen Russell to help better our cheeses

and the cheese making process.

“I have Connor Bowes (assistant cheese maker) and Wade Goodwin (junior cheese maker) working with me crafting cheeses, who have been absolutely brilliant and shown to be highly talented!”

Mr Condron said he loved his work.

“It’s quite easy to become passionate about cheese making, many people do it at home in their spare time as a hobby.

“I guess what I love about it is the idea of creating something delicious that other people really enjoy, the process too is a rare mix of art and science where you have to think about the microbes and how they work within a cheese and then also thinking about how that cheese will look and taste.

“It can be frustrating,but it’s a thoroughly enjoyable job.

“Throughout my time here I’ve been lucky to have worked with such knowledgeable people who are widely renowned throughout the industry.”

Mr Condron said his favourite Milawa Cheese to make was the Tommé , because of its unique process, but his favourite to eat is the Milawa Blue.

ART SPECTACULAR: More than 400 entries are expected for the 20th anniversary of the King Valley Art Show, which will hold its gala opening on June 9. PHOTO: Marc Bongers

King Valley art event celebrates 20 years IT’S time to celebrate, as the King Valley Art Show prepares to hold its 20th anniversary show on the Queen’s Birthday weekend this year.

The show began in 1996 when a group of King Valley business people met at the local pub and decided to form a tourism group with the aim of promoting the region as a tourist destination.

The following year, they held their first event in the modest surrounds of the Whitfield Uniting Church, offering prizes totalling just over $2000.

Now the show is a major tourism attraction for the region, drawing over 800 visitors to the King Valley during its three day run in June.

With a prize pool of $18,750 including a grand prize of $3000 sponsored by Dal Zotto Wines, this year’s show is expected to attract more than 400 entries from both amateur and major artists.

King Valley Art Show president Anita Laurence said the event had grown considerably over the last two decades, thanks to the unwavering support of the community and generous sponsors.

She said major developments included a boost in sponsorship, the establishment of its Friends of the Art Show sponsorship group, and moving into bigger premises at the King Valley Cucina, now the home

of King River Brewing.

“It’s also thanks to the success of the show over the years that we’ve been able to establish a grant program which supports other events and initiatives held throughout the year that enrich the King Valley’s arts culture and benefit the community,” she said.

“As the reputation of the show has grown, so has the calibre of entries and we’re thrilled to be able to give artists the opportunity to show their work to a wider audience, and be rewarded for it.”

Visitors can expect to see another spectacular display featuring a wide variety of styles and mediums, from landscapes, portraits and still life, to watercolours, prints and abstract works, with most available to purchase at affordable prices.

To celebrate its 20th year, the show looks forward to welcoming renowned artist, regular entrant and the event’s co-founder Jim van Geet as this year’s judge, as well as offering an additional 10 “highly commended” prizes of $200 each.

The King Valley Art Show will be held from June 9 to June 12 at King River Brewing, opening to the public from 10am until 5pm from Saturday until Monday with entry $3 for adults and more information is available at www.kingvalleyartshow. com.au.

$12 million funding boost for iconic rail trail CYCLE tourism in Victoria’s High Country has received a massive vote of confidence with a State Government commitment of $12 million during 2017/18 to extend, enhance and market the iconic Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.

The funding boost was announced by Jaclyn Symes (MLC Northern Victoria) with the project forming part of a broader cycling master plan, being developed for the North East, which looks to optimise cycle tourism opportunities across the region’s rail trail, road cycling and mountain bike offering.

Tourism North East CEO Amber Gardner said that the funding was a major acknowledgement of the High Country’s world-class cycle tourism assets.

“The High Country has long been recognised as having the strongest cycle tourism credentials in the state,” she said.

“This funding acknowledges the region’s competitive strengths in this space and will assist the High Country in achieving its vision of becoming the premier cycle tourism destination in Victoria.
