AROUND THE REGION
Discover, honour Victorian military history THE Goulburn River Valley region, in the heart of Victoria, has a rich military history consisting of countless stories of bravery and sacrifice. Visitors can now follow in the footsteps of these incredible war heroes by discovering the new Military Touring Route, which honours those who served in a 334km round trip across Euroa, Benalla, Shepparton, Tatura and Murchison. The journey begins in Seymour, only 1.5 hours’ drive from Melbourne, at the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk where visitors can honour the 60,000 plus courageous men and women who served in Australia’s most divisive war. A wall of emotive images displays the names of these veterans and the harrowing conflict they endured. Next is the Australian Light Horse Memorial Park, located on part

of Camp Seymour where guests can stroll through the park of what was once Victoria’s largest military training and staging facility until 1939. The military route then proceeds through a plethora of war history including, RAAC Memorial & Army
Tank Museum, Italian Ossario, Calder Woodburn Memorial Avenue, German War Cemetery, Tatura Irrigation & Wartime Camps Museum, Benalla Aviation Museum and Honouring Our Heroes Memorial. Military aficionados can plan a
pilgrimage along the moving Military Touring Route in the Goulburn River Valley region by visiting www. heartofvictoria.com.au/militaryhistory. The interactive map will help plan an unforgettable visit to this historic region.
Mt Hotham bushwalking MT Hotham’s bushwalking season has arrived, with the most comprehensive bushwalking program and tracks and trails network to suit all ages and fitness levels. The mountain is home to an iconic range of alpine tracks and trails, with access to picturesque scenery, unique flora and fauna, and some of the region’s richest indigenous and gold mining history. Mt Hotham will also reintroduce its free summer bushwalking program, which will kick off on Boxing Day and will run over the long weekends between December and April. The Summer Guided Bushwalking Program is now in its sixth year of operation, a unique activity to Mt Hotham for visitors to enjoy. Each walk has strong historical themes, where individuals can explore the gold mining history and learn how the golden era
eventually transformed the region from wilderness to the resort we know today. Mt Hotham’s tourism information coordinator, Jo Kortman, said that the tracks and trails offering at Mt Hotham was an experience not to be missed when visiting the alpine area. “Take a short stroll and learn about the history of Hotham, take in some of the most stunning mountain views or set out for the day, deep into the valley and explore some of our historic huts and natural resources,” Miss Kortman said. “We very lucky to be the only Victorian Alpine Resort to be running free guided tours, where our tour guides offer visitors with passionate local knowledge you can’t find anywhere else.” The free guided bushwalking program can be found at www. mthotham.com.au.

Plenty on the calendar at John Gehrig Wines
TRANQUIL: Enjoy the great outdoors at John Gehrig Wines this summer.
IF you love a winery with history then John Gehrig Wines is for you – John a fourth generation winemaker, established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976; only minutes from the Milawa Gourmet Region. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the next winemaking generation of Gehrigs to craft fine wines. Ross has an obsession with producing the best grapes to produce
wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic Northeast Victorian winery. In 2011, the allure of returning back into John’s original birthplace Rutherglen - was too strong, thus Ross with wife Meghan, have expanded to a new vineyard and cellar door site in Gooramadda (east Rutherglen) If you are planning a trip to either cellar door this season you may see a flurry of activity as preparation begins for harvest as this is the one of the
busiest times of year, “vintage”. So if you enjoy a wide range of diverse wines - why not come and see them this season when you are out enjoying North East Victoria at Rutherglen or Oxley. There are plenty of upcoming events for your 2018 calendar: February 3 sees the Ales on the Ovens Festival, John Gehrig Wines will be serving up plenty of glasses of wine. On February 17-18, there will be the Love + Light wedding festival,
where their rustic historic charming cellar door will be on showcase. During March 10-11 at Tastes of Rutherglen, they are working with Indigo Gelato and “That Macaron Lady”. In May, as part of High Country Harvest, they will be running their Yoga, Bubbles, Brekkie, Bliss event. So for more information on any of the 2018 events or the winery, please see the website at www.johngehrigwines.com.au.

Art gallery brings new cultural dimension to Rutherglen winescape THE natural harmony of wine, art and cultural heritage underpins a landmark new winery tourism and Aboriginal art project, which was launched in late October at Rutherglen Estates. In something of a cultural coup for the region, Aboriginal Exhibitions
Gallery at Rutherglen Estates, represents a powerful creative collaboration between the iconic winery and major Aboriginal arts collector, Hans Sip. Quarterly exhibitions will launch with each new season and feature artworks from over 90 Aboriginal

artists, represented in Hans Sip’s diverse collection. The respectful repurposing of the 1880s winery building, to house the new cellar door and art gallery, has left the rustic walls, beams and welltrodden floor, mostly untouched. The sympathetic refresh of the historic cellar has allowed the art to breathe new life into the once forgotten space, creating warmth, texture and a perfect backdrop for the significant art works. Marc Scalzo (general manager amd chief winemaker, Rutherglen Estates) explained that adding the gallery concept to the precinct allows visitors to flow seamlessly between
immersive and memorable wine and art experiences. Close connections to their Murray River homelands and the sacred nature of the river are some of the themes explored in works by Latje Latje and Yorta Yorta artists in the first exhibition, Dhungala -Trevor ‘Turbo’ Brown and Craig Charles, which runs until February 2018. Fitness fun for all PEOPLE of all ages and fitness levels are now able to tone up by the side of the Murray River, thanks to the opening of AlburyCity’s new fitness station at Noreuil Park. The station has 13 pieces of exercise equipment, including parallel, chin-up and dip bars as well as fully adjustable hydraulic resistance machines - all designed and manufactured for outdoor use. It’s the first fitness zone in Albury to use hydraulic equipment and complements static fitness zones at Lavington and East Albury. AlburyCity deputy mayor Amanda Cohn said the equipment was not only for fitness fanatics, but suited to people of all ages and abilities. “The great thing about this station is that anyone of any level of fitness can use it to improve their general health and wellbeing and it’s all in the beautiful surrounds of our riverside precinct,” she said. “It’s totally free to use so I’d urge everyone to flex their muscles a little
the next time they’re at Noreuil Park and give this fantastic new facility a try.” Nathan Rogers, 21 and his sister Brianna, 19, were among the first to road test the new equipment. Nathan, a professional triathlete regularly trains at Noreuil Park, running the Wagirra Trail as part of his preparation for an upcoming triathlon series. He says the new fitness zone is a welcome addition to the area and is confident it will be well used. “Where else can you work out against such a sensational backdrop like the Murray River,” he said. Brianna, who loves to keep fit, believes the new equipment will quickly become one of the most popular attractions at Noreuil Park for dedicated athletes and casual exercisers alike. The project has been jointly funded by AlburyCity with assistance from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program.

New rail trail is on track for 2018 FOLLOWING a series of information sessions and planning in the past few months, work on the new rail trail from Beechworth to Yackandandah and Osbornes Flat is set to begin in early 2018. Funding for the North East Victoria Cycle Optimisation project, a $12 million regional rail trail project, was announced by the State Government
in the May budget and was followed by a confirmation visit by the Premier Daniel Andrews to Yackandandah in July. The Beechworth to Yackandandah component will cost $6 million. “Beechworth and Yackandandah are much-loved and frequently visited historic towns that will be easily linked via the new rail trail.
“Both towns and the communities of Wooragee and Osbornes Flat and businesses along the trail such as wineries and farm gate businesses will benefit economically from increased tourist trade,” mayor Jenny O’Connor said. “The new rail trail will be an asset that draws residents and tourists alike to enjoy its various attractions.”
Cr O’Connor said the trail alignment had been determined for many years based on availability of public land, connectivity of key nodes, suitable off-road alignment, and accessibility. The work will begin with an underpass at the Wodonga RoadYackandandah turn-off. For further information visit www.indigoshire.vic.gov.au/railtrail.

This year the artists include Mark Vincent, winner of Australia’s Got Talent and currently on top of the music charts; James Morrison, one of Australia’s most extraordinary musical talents; and Anna Voshege, the dazzling young Australian soprano currently taking Europe by storm. *RUJH D PDJQL²FHQW DQG UXJJHG ODQGPDUN FOR millennia, people have found themselves drawn to Beechworth Gorge. The overhanging rock shelters were once used by the Dhudhoroa, Bpangerang, Jaitmathang and Minjambuta people, who lived by Spring Creek thousands of years ago, and the area is a haven for native wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, possums, parrots, cockatoos, wombats and the occasional sleepy koala. You can also find beautiful flora, from lilies and wildflowers to red gums, wattles and more. During the gold rush, many flocked to the area around Beechworth Gorge in search of gold, and some of the lookouts in the gorge were reportedly used to signal the Kelly Gang. These days, the gorge flora includes lilies, orchids and other wildflowers, as well as bush peas,

Beechworth to get its castle THE Kerrigans’ house from the iconic movie ‘The Castle’ will soon be moved to ‘Soak up the Serenity’ at its new home in Mayday Hills Village. Beechworth ‘larrikin’ George Fendyk first floated the idea earlier this year when the house came up for sale, and regarding the purchase, his partner Geoff Lucas said, “tell him he’s dreaming”. But he warmed to the idea and they bought the house in July at auction for $40,000. The house is set to be transported to its new home at the back of Mayday Hills in the very near future, according to Mr Fendyk. “The pool room will be set up as shown in the movie and will be open to the public, and the rest of the house will probably be the caretaker’s cottage for the caravan park that is being planned. “This is an important piece of Australian movie history... the film is full of good fun and fine messages about raising kids and standing up against big corporations. “It is going to make Beechworth a better place and bring many different people to the area, and that has got to be good. “The big project - Mayday Hills - has got to be finished - it can’t be left half done.”

Beer to tantalise tastebuds BRIGHT Brewery has brewed up a new beer for this summer, crafting a traditional saison to ensure your tastebuds are tantalised with a beer style made famous in Belgium and France as a refreshing reward for hard working farmers. Head brewer, Richard Chamberlin, developed his Summer Saison to be easy drinking and very refreshing on the hottest of days. With many craft beers focused on hops these days, providing floral or fruity flavours and aromas, a saison derives its flavours from yeast providing citrus and spice flavours with low bitterness. Open every day for lunch and dinner, Bright Brewery is an ideal destination to enjoy a lazy summer afternoon, overlooking parklands

and the adventure playground alongside the Ovens River. One of Bright Brewery’s most renowned offerings is their Sunday Sessions of live music. Catch a free gig every Sunday afternoon featuring local and touring artists as you kick back with a beer, cider or wine. Live music is also the feature of
Bright Brewery’s annual New Year’s Eve party. This year, the event will feature Scarecrow – The Mellencamp Show. Welcome in the new year with the full Mellencamp experience, which even the man himself, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer John Mellencamp has called one of the most authentic and musically accurate interpretations of
his songs he has seen. Rock into 2018 as Scarecrow pump out songs like ‘Hurt So Good’, ‘Cherry Bomb’ and ‘Pink Houses’; anthems of a generation and now the classic hits of today. Tickets are $25, available from the Bright Brewery website or over the bar. For more information, see www. brightbrewery.com.au/scarecrow.

Adventure on the screen HELD in the picturesque Victorian township of Bright, in the heart of Australia’s Alpine region, the Adventure Travel Film Festival is not just a celebration of the world’s greatest adventure travel films from the 1930s to the present day. It’s also a weekend of inspiring speakers and authors who will motivate and enthuse you. The seventh annual festival will be held on February 9, 10 and 11 with Festival HQ right next door to the Bright Brewery. The festival takes place at various venues in Bright with the Starlight Cinema in the parkland behind the brewery, in the heart of town, one of the best places to enjoy the films as night falls. Festival director Rupert Shaw says anyone attending won’t fail to be inspired by the films being screened and adventurers sharing their stories. This year’s films being screened will allow festival guests to travel vicariously by canoe, bicycle, uni-cycle and even a WWII amphibious jeep, along with the story of an explorer who pushed his daughter across England in a pram. There will be plenty of opportunities to meet the presenters and guests at the great restaurants and cafes around Bright. Full details can be found on the festival website at www.adventuretravelfilmfestival.com.

FALLS CREEK
PEDAL ON: Mountain biking is more accessible than ever with over 37km of trails for beginners and intermediate riders at Falls Creek. PHOTO: Chris Hocking
Spectacular lifestyle to enjoy at Falls Creek SUMMER tourism in the High Country has grown from strength to strength as more visitors than ever travel to experience the spectacular lifestyle of the region. In North East Victoria, Falls Creek is at the forefront of this surge with years of dedicated efforts to build its summer offering paying big dividends come the warmer months. The appeal of the High Country is undeniable – crisp mountain air, cool summer days and spectacular landscape is a mix that’s hard to deny. At Falls Creek the attraction runs much deeper. These days, bushwalkers are joined by families, athletes and adventurers in a resort atmosphere reminiscent of the bustling winter period. The biggest drawcard is the new Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park. Over 40km in total, the purpose-built trail network includes more than 10km of green trails for beginners and 27km for intermediates to make Falls Creek perfect for those new to the sport. The inclusion of bike patrollers
TAKE A BREAK: Mountain biking is hugely popular with all standards of riders due to the diversity of trails and spectacular scenery like this. PHOTO: Matt Staggs
and shuttle services every weekend make for safer (and less gruelling) experiences and all trails start and finish in the village. If road cycling is more your thing, Falls Creek gives the best of many worlds. There are two climbs to Falls Creek from each approach plus plenty of flat-riding opportunities for tens of
kilometres out of the village. Falls Creek is as cycle friendly as they come and most accommodation options include bike storage to let you treat your bike as well as you do at home. One highlight that might surprise is Rocky Valley Lake - Australia’s highest significant body of water. Just 2km from the village the lake
is a massive 250 hectares in area so there are plenty of opportunities to fish, swim and explore. Bring your own boat or visit in the summer holidays to hire kayaks, sailboats, pedal boats and paddle boards. Events are a big part of the furniture at Falls Creek and there is something for most interests. In January MTB De Femme brings together riders of all abilities for a ladies-only mountain bike festival. Australia Day weekend is popular also with the traditional Mile High Dragon Boat Championship regatta. One of the staff’s favourite picks is sampling the culinary delights of the region at the World’s Longest Lunch – hosted at a secret location by renowned chef Barry Iddles. Falls Creek is Just 120km from Albury and well within reach for a day trip or short escape. If you haven’t seen what the hype is about, it’s high time you did. GLENROWAN
Take in history and local attractions in Glenrowan SITUATED between Wangaratta and Benalla, Glenrowan is famous for its links to Ned Kelly, but there is so much more to this close knit community than what happened in 1880. Today, Glenrowan is a town that not only embraces its history, but looks to the future with ďŹ ne regional wines and delicious local produce on offer as well as warm hospitality, tourist attractions and stunning bushland and natural landscapes. The Glenrowan wine region has a long and rich winemaking history, as 130 years of winemaking has established the region’s reputation for full-bodied reds, fragrant whites and fortiďŹ eds, and the region’s cellar doors are cosy and welcoming to wine lovers. The cellar doors are intimate and
welcoming, many offering casual fare on weekends featuring local produce and delicacies. Glenrowan itself also has several dining options to suit travellers and locals alike. There are also several fruit orchards and growers in the area producing various delicious fresh produce to tempt the tastebuds. Nearby natural attractions include the Warby Ovens National Park, the Winton Wetlands and more, offering many options for a picturesque picnic spot, bird watching and bushwalking, as well as vantage points and lookouts including Ryan’s Lookout, Mt Glenrowan and Salisbury Falls. Whatever activity you choose, there is plenty to explore and enjoy in Glenrowan and district.

The tradition of the Tolmie Sports continues Old favourites, the Warby Engine Club and the Fergie Club are also very popular with both our locals and visitors. The axeman and equestrian programe run throughout the day; one of the big highlights being the Three Man Challenge Event, involving a race between teams - each consisting of an axeman, a runner and a horse and rider. The day will also include one of our most anticipated and loved events – the dog jump. There will be lots of stalls and food outlets selling yummy wholesome country tucker to suit all tastes, or you can bring along a picnic and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere and spirit of a good old fashioned country sports day. The Tolmie Mechanics Institute Hall will double as the “tearooms” for the day, where you can take some quiet time out to relax and enjoy homemade sandwiches and cakes,
and a Devonshire tea with the best scones in the North East. You can also keep up to date with all that is happening on Tolmie Sports Day, on our Facebook page - tell your friends to come along and experience a day you will always remember.

Many of the original events are still held today, such as the foot races, the dog jump, the wood chopping and the equestrian events - and these are as popular as ever. What can you expect from a day at the 132nd Tolmie Sports? Aside from the novelty events and foot races for adults and children, there will be plenty of country fun with raffles, guessing competitions and entertainment for all, including Trixie the Clown, “Bash the Rat”, face painting and woodworking displays, local historical and craft displays, a whipcracker, the cross cut saw and egg toss, a wheelbarrow race, tug of war, kiddies tennis - “Hot Shots”, SES and CFA displays as well as a great favourite - the “Boys Toys” display.
A day of old-style activities for all the family to enjoy. There’ll be axemen & equestrian events, the dog jump, novelty events, stalls, displays and all the old favourites for kids as well as adults to try their hand at .. and all activities are free!

DURING November, the Hunt Club Hotel officially changed hands – with Merrijig locals Ralph Nemeth and Patrick “Paddy” Purcell taking over. The boys are keen to bring back the atmosphere of days gone by – when country pubs were a place for the community to come together for a good time. More than that, they want to see the pub continue to flourish as a hot-spot for all things Merrijig. “We are really excited about making a few changes, but also about providing the same great customer service and food that the Hunt Club is known for,” Paddy said. “We hope to have more live music and events, as well as continuing on with the old favourites – like trivia every second Tuesday, and Jack the Joker on a Thursday night.” To really make Thursday night happy hour hum, all drinks will be offered at half price from 5-7pm, with free bar snacks and raffle prizes also on offer. Despite the Hunt Club being the first hotel purchase for Paddy and Ralph, they are certainly familiar with the Merrijig community. Paddy is born and bred in Merrijig, and after a successful career on the rodeo circuit returned

State forests are great forests for holidays VISITING state forests is a great free activity that both kids and adults can enjoy during the school holidays. Acting assistant chief fire officer for Hume Brett Haines said: “There is a wealth of state forests, and recreation sites within them, to enjoy right across our region. “From checking out the stunning Steavenson Falls at Marysville, exploring walking tracks throughout Mansfield State Forest, or relaxing beside the King River at the Edi Cutting campsite, there are plenty of activities everyone can enjoy in state forests,” Mr Haines said. “Many have free camp sites in beautiful bushland where you often spot local wildlife. “You can also just enjoy a day trip with a picnic and perhaps a stroll along one of the many walking tracks. “Details of where state forests are located and what visitor facilities are available can be found at www.

“To explore Victoria’s state forests on a trail bike you must have a motorcycle licence or learner permit and your trail bike must be registered. “All road rules apply so you must always wear an approved helmet,
keep left and ride safely, according to the conditions. “There are some fantastic trail bike areas with loading ramps, barbecues, toilets and track signs close to Stanley and Yackandandah, which is also great for mountain bike riders too. “Forest Fire Management Victoria officers will be undertaking regular patrols of state forests throughout the school holidays to make sure everyone is doing the right thing. If you see any irresponsible, suspicious or illegal behaviour in public land areas, please report it to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 136 186. SHEPPARTON
SUMMER FUN: A beach stadium similar to this will be set up in Shepparton for the upcoming beach netball series.
Beach netball to come to Shepparton GREATER Shepparton has been announced host of the 2018 Netball Victoria Beach Netball series. The event will take place at the Victoria Park Lake on a temporary built beach stadium on the weekend of February 10 and 11, 2018. Greater Shepparton is one of the two regional locations where the beach netball competitions will take place, as Lakes Entrance will host the event in January followed by Shepparton in February. Beach netball is an extension to the traditional game of netball, with the same rules and regulations, the exception being that participants aren’t required to wear shoes and the game is played on a half-court marked out in the sand. Beach netball teams can be made up of all-female and mixed players. Players must be aged 16 years or older. Greater Shepparton City Council mayor Kim O’Keeffe is excited that Shepparton had been named as one of the two Victorian venues to host this new and unique form of netball. “Many teams enjoy playing beach netball to serve as training for the up coming netball season.
“Beach netball can be played allfemale or mixed teams, so I suggest local netball teams register before January 31 to have the unique experience of playing their beloved sport on sand. “Hosting this event continues our tradition of hosting high profile events and will give netball enthusiasts the opportunity to watch some fast and a different format of netball. “This event also helps build our reputation as the sporting capital of regional Victoria, and adds to our impressive list of recently acquired new major events including the return of the World Tour International Beach Volleyball in February 2018, the securing of the Victoria Long Course Swimming Championships on the Australia Day weekend, the Little Athletics Victoria Northern Region Track and Field Championships at the redeveloped Shepparton Sports City and the return of the Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Limited Basketball Classic for three years from 2018.” To register for beach netball visit www.vic.netball.com.au.

Meanwhile, at Sedona Estate, you can check out the venue’s new permanent indoor/outdoor art exhibitions, as well as enjoy platters of local delicacies on weekends and public holidays, or even learn more from winemaker Paul Evans. Included in the winery’s new releases this summer is the 2015 vintage brut, which is handcrafted using the traditional method of bottle fermentation, and is made up of 50 per cent chardonnay and 50 per cent pinot noir. Generous time on lees has resulted in a wine with yeasty biscuit aromas and further ageing will enhance the baked apple, oat and citrus flavours to deliver a finely beaded, dry sparkling wine with a persistent mousse and semi dry finish.
