NEXT ISSUE Spring 2017 ADVERTISING BOOKING DEADLINE: Friday, November 10, 2017

Still time for visitors to enjoy the snow ALTHOUGH it is ofďŹ cially spring, there is still time to head up to the mountains and enjoy the North East’s various snow resorts before the end of snow season. And, of course, once the snow is gone, there are still plenty of warm weather activities to enjoy, such as hiking, mountain biking, and much more. While the snow season is still on, there are still events for you to enjoy. At Falls Creek, you can experience the action of the McKayos Snow/Dirt/ Road Enduro on September 23, or the Big Dig hunt for buried treasure on the last day of the season on October 1. The Big Dig will include a number of fun community activities and there are plenty of prizes to be won. Meanwhile, Mt Hotham’s events

calendar includes plenty of fun and activity. Wednesday, September 13 sees the mountain host the Camp Quality Fancy Dress Run Walk to raise funds for the worthy work that the camp does. Fast and furious female athletic prowess, and valuable ski and snowboard instruction, will be on show at the Chix with Stix Shred Sessions on September 16-17. That weekend will also see the Ormond Ski Club Race on September 16 and the Hotham Junior Freeride throughout the weekend. Finally, the weekend of September 23-24 at Mt Hotham will see the enjoyment and competition of the 2017 Spring Cup. For more information on the events taking place at your favourite resort, be sure to search the web or social media.

SNOW NEWS

Make the trip to a brewery with altitude AT an altitude of 1550 metres, Blizzard Brewing Company is Australia’s highest brewery. Located in the Victorian Alps at Dinner Plain, it is 10km from the ski lifts at Mt Hotham, and 50 metres from the Cobungra ski lift. Blizzard Brewing Company founder Mark Hubbard hails from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, where there is a strong craft beer tradition and a long history of breweries being located at altitude in ski resorts. As a passionate skier, hiker and cyclist, Mark was drawn to the High Country of North East Victoria, where the only thing needed to make the Alpine experience complete was a brewery above the snowline. So Blizzard Brewing was born to bring that particular aspect of the Rocky Mountain Alpine experience to the Victorian Alps. There is another reason for situating a craft brewery in Victoria’s

High Country – the water. At Blizzard, today’s powder is tomorrow’s beer. Basically, Blizzard brews with snow-melt. Fresh, pure Victorian Alps spring water, sourced from the high altitude aquifers of Dinner Plain. Water is the main ingredient in beer, and Blizzard pride themselves on using the purest available. Visit Blizzard in the High Country to enjoy beer above all. Whether in the Lift Line Tap Room, The Mile High Beer Lounge or the Overlook Tasting Deck, Blizzard offers: +DQG PDGH FUDIW EHHU RQ WDS 7DVWLQJ SDGGOHV %UHZHU\ WRXUV 3DFNDJH VDOHV /RFDO ZLQHV *URZOHUV DQG 6QDFNV DQG IXQ For more information, see www. blizzardbrewing.com.

9LVLWLQJ ZLQHPDNHU DGGV (XURSHDQ ³ DLU MONICHINO Wines recently farewelled their visiting French winemaker Marine Fouchet. Ms Fouchet has been working with chief winemaker Terry Monichino over the past six months. Marine was thrilled to have won a bronze medal on her 2017 Reisling when Monichino took home bronze and two silver medals at the Cairns Wine Show, kicking off the wine show circuit for the season. “This is my first real baby, I’ve never worked on a Riesling before and I

worked on it from beginning to end. “It is also my first wine award,” Ms Fouchet said. Ms Fouchet said she only bottled the white fruit a fortnight before sending it to be judged. She said the fresh and crispy young wine could be enjoyed now or kept in the cellar to mature for 10 years. The young winemaker had come to Monichino as part of an Australian study tour, after specialising in sparkling white wine back home in the famous French province of Champagne.

“At Monichino I learned how to make red wine as well as the whites and sparkling varietals,” she said. “This has improved my confidence and set me on a direction.” Monichino Wines partner, Anna Sergi, said Ms Fouchet was their “yeast whisperer” for her knack with different types of yeast and fermentations. “She was special here and we enjoyed having a European winemaker’s

input into this year’s vintage. “It adds something to our business, and gives our wines a new life.” Monichino welcomes all tourists to their boutique winery. Farmhouse Platters are available at the winery from Tuesday - Sunday. Come and chat with Monichino Wines’ friendly staff and family. Try a large selection of exceptional red and white table wines and the selection of Museum Fortified wines.

BEECHWORTH

Celtic culture comes to life in Beechworth THIS year, Beechworth Celtic Festival comes to life again, with the event moving to the iconic Old Beechworth Gaol. Pipe bands will now fill the inside of the Old Beechworth Gaol with a tattoo that will rival international events. Friday night will begin the

weekend with pure Celtic indulgence as the Priory again hosts the opening night dinner. Other attractions will include the Celtic market and food stalls, Celtic dancing, Barry Vs Kelly and more. For details see beechworthceltic festival.com.au or search Facebook for Beechworth Celtic Festival.

CHEERS: Partake in some European-style festivities at Bridge Road Brewers’ Oktoberfest.

Enjoy yourself at Oktoberfest Kraus, have recently returned from a trip to Austria and Germany. They managed to stock up on authentic Bavarian outfits to ensure the staff are kitted out for the weekend. Visitors are also encouraged to dress in the traditional Lederhosen or Dirndl (traditional Bavarian dress) and enjoy the festivities. The weekend will include plenty of beer, German cuisine and fun for all with a traditional ohm-pah band from Berlin belting out some great drinking tunes. The Beechworth Oktoberfest will be held at Bridge Road Brewers, off Ford St, behind Tanswells Hotel, rear access from High St. It will be held between 11am-8pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 8-9, with drink service concluding at 6pm each day.

BEECHWORTH craft brewery Bridge Road Brewers is hosting its 13th annual Oktoberfest this spring. Located in the heart of town, this small brewery has a swag of awards to its name, and is ready for this year’s celebration of beer and music. The event is based around the original Oktoberfest held in Munich in late September each year, and those at Bridge Road Brewers believe this Beechworth Oktoberfest is probably as close as you will get to the real thing without forking out the dollars to fly to Europe. They also have brewed two beers especially for the occasion. As is tradition in Munich, Bridge Road Brewers also brew their own Marzen, or Oktoberfest beer, more than two months ahead of the event. and were the culmination of the Independent Brewers Association’s three-day conference and trade expo at the Adelaide Convention Centre. There were 682 entries from 115 breweries in this year’s awards with the winners representing a diverse range and wonderful cross-section of the craft industry, from the small to larger operations. Mr Davidson said the English heritage of Bright Brewery head brewer Richard Chamberlin had helped lift the

quality of the Hellfire Amber Ale while Chamberlin and assistant brewer Tom Wood had also worked on refining the Fainters Dubbel. Mr Chamberlin said he was most proud of the gold medal for the unique Belgian style Dubbel. “I’m most proud of the way we’ve refined Fainters Dubbel over the last year,” he said. “No batch has been the same since I started at Bright Brewery last year, as we’ve worked on bringing

out the beautiful yeast and dark fruit flavours of traditional strong Belgian dark beers. “These awards highlight the high quality of our beers, which is a priority for us as we build our production brewery on Churchill Ave so that we can sell our beers to the wider Victorian market.” Melbourne’s Dainton Family Brewery won Champion Beer with a special release Cherrywood Smoked Rye Baltic Porter.

BRIGHT Brewery has returned from the 2017 Craft Beer Awards with a swag of medals. Gold medals for local favourites Hellfire Amber Ale and Fainters Dubbel were the first the small and independently owned brewery has received in the four year history of the brewing industry awards. Bright Brewery’s other three entries Blowhard Pale Ale, Staircase Porter and the special release Pumpkin Harvest Ale made in collaboration with the Australian Pumpkin Seed Company were all awarded bronze medals. “We’re honoured and proud to be awarded gold by our peers from across Australia’s brewing industry,” Bright Brewery marketing manager James Davidson said. “In a market dominated by Pale Ales and IPA, it’s fantastic to be recognised for our malt driven beers, with our High Country interpretations of styles that originate from England and Belgium. “Both Hellfire and Fainters have very strong followings in our local community and are ideal beers for savouring during these winter months.” This year’s Craft Beer Awards took place at Adelaide Oval during winter

Spotlight on Bright’s spring beauty THE Bright Spring Festival, now in its 29th year, is set to be held from October 21 until November 7. The festival showcases the special attractions of the Great Alpine Valleys; great cafes and restaurants, access to three wine regions, diverse accommodation, adventure sports, walking tracks and bike trails, markets, art exhibitions and a natural beauty not found elsewhere in Victoria. During spring, Bright and surrounding towns are a display of new life: cheeky bulbs in all colours, delicate roses, dogwood owers everywhere and trees bursting into lush green foliage. The fun ďŹ lled festival also features the gorgeous open gardens that it is famous for, a trash and treasure event at Bright Brewery, a grand Fireworks Spectacular on November 4 (which promises to be bigger and better than ever, thanks to a special benefactor), and much more. For more information, see www.brightspringfestival. com.au or the festival’s Facebook page, or email brightspringfestival@gmail.com. Spring into local music festivals THIS October will be the last time you can enjoy the sweet sounds of Swagger Music Festival - at least for a year anyway. The three-day folk music festival in Wandiligong is set for a year off in 2018 before a likely return in 2019. Organiser Michael Patterson said increasing expenses after growing the festival from a few hundred people to now capping it at 1500 people had forced him to consider his options. “Last year with the rain it made me realise our site is too weatherdependent and possibly too far out of the way,â€? he said. “There is limited phone reception at the location, people live off social media but it’s also an issue if we do have an emergency. “Although I’ve been doing this for seven years now I’m still learning things each year. “We’re probably going to look at moving the festival to a new location - having it at the new Alpine Events Centre in Bright is something we will weigh up or maybe having it out in the Buckland. “A change of date from spring to summer is possibly on the cards, too, as at the moment uni exams are happening during our current date in October.â€? In the meantime this year’s event will be headlined by Kylie Lionheart,

Fingers Mitchell Cullen, Josh Cashman and Little Georgia. “Kyle Lionheart has just come back from touring in the United Kingdom with Xavier Rudd and Fingers Mitchell Cullen is fast becoming known for his guitar skills and being a talented multi-instrumentalist,â€? Mr Patterson said. “Josh Cashman and Little Georgia were popular last year and outside of those two we’re excited to have a lot of different artists joining us for the ďŹ rst time.â€? Second round tickets are currently selling fast while this year people will be able to purchase single day entry if they are unable to attend all three days of the festival. “With single day tickets available for the ďŹ rst time, it will give more people the chance to head along.â€? Tickets are available online through the Swagger Music Festival website while locals can purchase theirs from Sixpence Coffee in Bright. Swagger Music Festival will be held October 20-22. Also on the local calendar this spring is bluegrass and old time music festival, Mountaingrass, which will take place on November 17-19. The event will include concerts, workshops and much more, and more information is available on mountaingrass.com.au.

LAW BREAKERS LOOK OUT: Victoria Police’s new toy: the $160,000 Mercedes E43 AMG police car. (Photograph courtesy of Victoria Police Road Policing Command.)

Australia’s fastest police car in Euroa including a number of historic police cars such as a Studebaker and HK Holden, all presented in their original colours and with all equipment. Powered by a twin-turbocharged V6, the $160,000 Mercedes AMG E43 can reach the speed limit in just 4.6 seconds - about the same as a Porsche, and quicker than previous Holdens and Falcons used as police pursuit cars. Unlike other expensive and exotic cars occasionally used by police for public awareness campaigns including a Porsche 911 once used by NSW Police - the imposing Mercedes will be a fully functional highway patrol vehicle used for everyday police work by Victoria Police. The Guardian V2 is pictured here with Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer. It won’t cost the taxpayer one cent because it is on loan from MercedesBenz as part of a 12-month trial.

COURTESY of Victoria Police, the Australian National Show and Shine Euroa on October 1 will have on show Australia’s fastest cop car - a $160,000 Mercedes E43 AMG. Police in Victoria have taken delivery of Australia’s most hi-tech police car. It’s a first for Victoria but other states will get a chance to sample the semiautonomous vehicle over the coming months. It is not just for show – the Mercedes will be on active duty on local roads for about three weeks surrounding its October 1 appearance in Euroa. The E43 is capable of steering itself and automatically braking in an emergency. Its ability to read the road, monitor driver fatigue and avoid collisions with cars and pedestrians will be the focus of police. The mega-Mercedes, dubbed “the Guardian V2” will star in a line-up of vehicles on show from Victoria Police,

Prestigious wine showcase in Rutherglen year, with expected entry numbers of around 2000 wines. Wine show secretary treasurer Geoff O’Dwyer is particularly pleased to see a number of new wineries entering table wines in the Rutherglen show this year. There is a growing recognition that a medal from the Rutherglen Wine Show or the Australian Fortified Wine Show is an indication of a superior wine and wine consumers recognise a Rutherglen medal or award as a mark of quality. The event has attracted a team of highly experienced judges to Rutherglen, with wine show chairman Chris Pfeiffer and local representatives joined by judges from Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania.

Judging takes place over five days with wines to be judged in almost 140 different classes. An important part of the Rutherglen Wine Show is the “Presentation of Awards Dinner” on Thursday, September 28 and the public tasting which is held on Friday, September 29. A small number of tickets to this tasting and dinner are still available and inquiries can be made by contacting the Rutherglen Agricultural

Society office in Rutherglen on (02) 6032 9388 or via email wineagshow@ westnet.com.au. The Wine Show concludes on Sunday October 1 with the sale of award winning wines and other show entrants. The sale starts at 8am after a talk from Malcolm Campbell about the wines, and is usually concluded by 10.30am. For more information see www. rutherglewineshow.com.au.

38th Oxley Bush Market a ‘must visit’ MAKE sure you visit the 38th Annual Oxley Bush Market on Saturday, November 4 at the historic Oxley Shire Hall. Held on the weekend of the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, the market commences at 9am and is in full swing until 3pm. Entry is free and the market features over 170 stalls with an unbelievable range of homemade, home grown, home-produced and new items. The Oxley Shire Hall Committee, which organises the event, is anticipating another extremely successful ‘market day’. Hall secretary, Janet Heath, said the bargains on offer again promise to be ‘amazing’. “While many stallholders come from our local North East area, others travel long distances to the market and large crowds are again expected to flock to Oxley, which is just a short drive from Wangaratta at the entrance to the Milawa Gourmet Region,” she said. And, as usual, this year will feature many ‘first time’ stallholders as well as a host of regulars offering unique goods at great prices. “The Oxley Bush Market is a great place to kick off your Christmas shopping. “Gourmet food, drinks and toe-tapping music all add to the festive atmosphere, with many people

meeting up with friends and enjoying the vibrant surroundings. “The market is in full swing right up until closing time, so those wishing to avoid the morning crowds will find everything happening all day. “Another highlight is the Oxley Residents’ Association’s Monster Community Raffle drawn from about 2.30pm,” Mrs Heath said.

The Oxley Bush Market is again an official “Waste Wise” event and the committee is encouraging stallholders and visitors alike to ‘put the right thing in the right bin’. Dogs are not permitted (guide dogs excepted), and smoking is discouraged for safety reasons. For further information, go to www.oxley.vic.au, email oxleyhall@gmail.com or phone 0437 243583.

Life is sweet when visiting the King Valley WINES of the King Valley invites wine-lovers to the home of Italian wine styles this spring. La Dolce Vita (November 18-19) sees 11 participating wineries open their cellar doors for tastings of new release and museum release wines, authentic cuisine prepared by Nonna or a renowned local chef, live music, roving entertainers, competitions, kids’ activities, masterclasses and more. “This is an opportunity to experience

life in the King Valley the way we know it – time with friends, family and great food, in a beautiful setting. “The chance to discover a new favourite wine is always exciting, too - here you get to speak to the person who grew the grapes and made the wine,” says Alison Lloyd, marketing officer for the group. “It’s such a lovely day out; I highly recommend using your ticket across both days and trying to visit every

one of our eleven unique wineries.” Participating wineries are Brown Brothers, Chrismont, Dal Zotto, Darling Estate, Francesco, La Cantina, Merkel, Pizzini, Politini, Sam Miranda and Symphonia. The region is well known for its Italian varietal wines, such as prosecco, pinot grigio, arneis, sangiovese and nebbiolo. The valley offers a great environment for growing high quality

wine grapes, as well as an enviable lifestyle enjoyed by the winemaking families. Children are very welcome, with a range of treats and activities such as gelato, face-painting and bocce on the lawns. Entry to the festival is $25, which includes a souvenir tasting glass. Children play free. Book tickets online in advance at www.winesofthekingvalley.com.au.

King River Gold lives up to its name MILAWA Cheese Company’s King River Gold cheese has once again been recognised on the national stage, recently receiving a gold medal at the Australian Food Awards. Milawa Cheese Company CEO Ceridwen Brown said everyone at Milawa Cheese Company, especially the cheesemaking team, were happy with the award win. She said the King River Gold has been a consistent award winner for Milawa Cheese Company, having won several gold medals at AFA over the past five years, as well as being recognised for its consistent quality.

“It’s really exciting,” she said. “It’s a really great validation of the work we’ve been putting into these cheeses.” Ceridwen said King River Gold cheese has been constantly changing and evolving since her father David developed the recipe in the late 1980s. In recent years, cheesemakers Stephen Russell and Jack Condron have also refined the recipe. The Australian Food Awards (AFA) is one of Australia’s leading national food awards programs, conducted annually by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria.

GREATER Shepparton has been announced for the second time as host of the Tennis Seniors Australia, Australian Teams Carnival and Australian Individual Championships to be held from January 6-18, 2019. The Tennis Seniors Australia Championships are held annually and are hosted by the state organisations. The championships are held over two weeks, with the Australian Teams Carnival event held in the first week across over 50 courts which will be hosted between the permanent Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club courts with temporary grass courts to be built at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve. Australian Individual Championships will be held in the second week at Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club. Greater Shepparton mayor Dinny Adem said “this event continues our tradition of hosting major tennis events”. “We’ve recently hosted the 2014 Country Week Tennis, 2015 Asia Oceania Junior Davis Cup and Federation Cup qualifying ties and 2016 Tennis Seniors Australia events. The championships will see over 1000 visitors from around Australia and overseas spend time and money in our region. “This event will be a big win for our tourism and business industry helping

create more jobs in the region with an estimated $2 million injection into the economy in accommodation bookings, retail spending, entertainment and dining and tourism attractions,” said Cr Adem. “As a city we are setting the bar high as we aspire to be regional Australia’s sporting event capital. “This announcement further highlights recent additions to our impressive major events calendar including September’s Victorian Ultimate Mixed Frisbee Championships, Melbourne City Football Club v Western Sydney Wanderers’ preseason friendly at our redeveloped Shepparton Sports Precinct and the Shepparton Squash International being secured to the region until 2019.” Seniors’ tennis in Australia is booming and Tennis Seniors NSW president Mick Bruton was excited about bringing the 2019 events back to Greater Shepparton after the successful 2016 event. “Tennis Seniors NSW are very grateful to the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club for offering to host the Australian Championships at their popular venue. Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club president Malcolm Thiel was excited by the announcement. “This is a real coup for our club and the sport in the region.”

composer, instrumentalist and dancer Jen Shyu and will delight in the musical marvels of one of Finland’s top jazz exports the Kari Ikonen Trio,” Mr Simmons said. “The Australian line-up is equally strong with three of Australia’s highest profile musicians in James Morrison, Paul Grabowsky and

Spiderbait’s Kram premiering their unlikely yet all-improvised trio ‘The Others’, sure to be a festival highlight. “We are also very excited to have the much loved Lucky Oceans make his Wangaratta debut with his Perth trio, and a quintet featuring musicians from Western Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. “Audiences will be delighted by the quality and diversity of the 2017 program.” Festival chair Paul Squires said the range of ticketing options ensure that all music tastes and budgets are catered for. “With ticket prices starting at as little as $80 the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues has something for everyone,” Mr Squires said. “For those after the full jazz and blues music experience, the highly sought after festival Gold Pass offers unlimited access, guaranteed seating, and no queues,” he added An exciting change to this year’s festival will see Ford Street become the festival hub with a free community stage featuring local jazz and blues artists. WHILE wine and food is what draws many to Sedona Estate, the winery recently added another string to its bow – art exhibition space. Sonja Herges from Sedona Estate said that the cellar door now offers permanent indoor/outdoor exhibitions, mainly featuring the work of local Highland artist Darren Gilbert. Darren Gilbert’s distinctive metal sculptures can be found in the surrounding garden and his contrasting fine pen art, mainly featuring native animals, is on display in the cellar door. Sonja said the aim of exhibiting art, which the winery has done since autumn this year, is to present affordable artwork to visitors and locals alike, and give artists the chance to showcase and sell their work. The cellar door is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 11.30am to 5pm. On weekends and public holidays, a delicious cheese platter with a great selection of many local delicacies is available.

RELAX: A visit to Sedona Estate is a feast for all the senses.

Winemaker Paul Evans recommends trying some of the winery’s latest releases, including the 2017 chardonnay and a long awaited sparkling wine from the 2015 vintage, as well as the 2017 pinot gris. For more information go to www. sedonaestate.com.au.
