Exploring the wonder of Winton Wetlands THE serene and picturesque Winton Wetlands has become easily recognisable, largely because of the seemingly endless blue sky and the sculptural quality of the dead trees which dot the landscape.

Long before the area was inundated to create Lake Mokoan, the wetland system which flooded seasonally had ideally accommodated local indigenous peoples, providing an abundance of resources including water, traditional food, medicines and shelter, as well as being an important meeting place.

The road to restoration began in 2010 and the 8,750 hectare reserve became a project of national significance, believed to be the largest in the southern hemisphere, and a community based committee was established to manage the restoration of the Winton Wetlands.

Fast forward to today and the reserve has become a popular tourist destination because of

its natural assets and its cultural heritage.

People are visiting to walk and see the sights, ride bikes, bird watch, take photographs and go canoeing.

The centrepiece of the Winton Wetlands is “Mokoan Hub and Café” which opened in May 2015 and is considered one of the most important stages of the reserve’s restoration.

The hub has become the arrival point for visitors wanting to access bike tracks, walks and the lookout.

A canoe launching facility now provides a long passageway with a channel made deep enough so it can be used even when the wetlands is only 30 per cent full.

The observation pad constructed on the northern foreshore is believed to be the ideal location to view the stars, with a local astronomy group regularly visiting the site, although it is also a popular viewing platform for birdwatchers.

NEW ADDITION: The Mokoan Hub and Café which opened in 2015 is now the meeting point for visitors to the spectacular wetlands.

Annual dragon boat regatta THE Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club will host the 8th Annual Albury Wodonga Dragon Boat Regatta on the last weekend of February next year at the Gateway Lakes Precinct, Lemke Road, Wodonga.

This regatta will also celebrate an important 10 year birthday milestone.

This being the launch of the beautiful Brave Hearts Dragon Boat, built by a remarkable local group of cancer survivors who captured the hearts of the region by becoming the first group of women to have ever built a 12 metre dragon boat at the TAFE NSW Riverina Institute, Albury Campus.

This also saw the commencement of this great sport to our region.

The much loved Community Day Regatta which will take place on Saturday February 27, 2016 will have an underlying theme of Get Active for Your Health, and in the process have fun.

The event aims to have over 20 corporate and community teams including both councils competing against each other in the true spirit of

healthy competition and camaraderie.

They welcome newcomers to this day.

A team consists of 20 people who will be provided with everything including life jackets, paddles and of course a dragon boat to paddle and a qualified Sweep to steer the boat.

Each team will be given 2 one hour coaching tuition sessions on the two weekends prior to the regatta.

As well as a great day of sporting fun there will be a special, touching remembrance ceremony on the water to commemorate and celebrate the lives of those who have lost theirs to cancer, as well as individuals who are having cancer treatments or are now in remission.

Bonegilla Migrant Experience upgrade A NEW Welcome Centre is part of a major redevelopment officially opened at the Bonegilla Migrant Experience in November.

Victorian Senator Bridget McKenzie joined Wodonga mayor Anna Speedie in opening the $760,000 project which also includes landscaping, signage, restoration of the recreation hut and two public artworks.

Cr Speedie said the redevelopment has made the Bonegilla Migrant Experience more visitorfriendly and will help preserve an important part of Australian history for future generations.

“The Bonegilla Migrant Experience is a significant tourist attraction for the region and last financial year, welcomed 17,500 visitors,” she said.

“The site has links with people in every state and territory in Australia.

ALBURY / WODONGA PARIS comes to Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) this December with a stunning exhibition of more than 150 prints, posters, drawings and monotypes by the Impressionist masters, Lautrec, Degas and Daumier drawn from the collection of the National Gallery of Australia.

Impressions of Paris: Lautrec, Degas, Daumier examines the role of each artist in the development of 19th Century art in France—their inuence and their originality.

This special exhibition of works on paper will be further complemented by a suite of ďŹ ve bronze sculptures of ballet dancers by Degas, on loan to MAMA from the collections of the NGA, Art Gallery of NSW and Queensland Art Gallery.

MAMA curator, Bianca Acimovic, said the exhibition marked an important milestone for the new contemporary art museum. “For the ďŹ rst time in this region we have facilities which meet the

conservation and exhibition standards required by leading Australian and international galleries to present such important works of art. “Impressions of Paris represents a signiďŹ cant departure from the sorts of exhibitions we are used to seeing in Albury,â€? she said.

The exhibition will look at the major contribution to French art made by three key ďŹ gures: HonorĂŠ-Victorin Daumier (1808–1879), Edgar Degas (1834–1917) and Henri de ToulouseLautrec (1864–1901).

A generation apart, each was a consummate draughtsman whose innovative compositions and embrace of modern subject matter played a signiďŹ cant role in artistic developments in France over the 19th Century.

Outdoor delights in summer ON A CLEAR DAY: Mt Pilot summit within Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park.

Ryan’s Lookout: In Warby-Ovens National Park, on a clear day you’ll get a spectacular view to the Alps.

This might just be the first stop of a drive and walk tour through the Warby Range where you can enjoy several lookouts, picnic areas and walking tracks

including Wenham’s Camp and Pine Gully.

Look out for the stunning kangaroo grass, with their flowering spikes on display.

Woolshed Falls: With increased water coming over the falls there’s no better time to visit the falls in Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park.

Enjoy the view from the lookout or get a bit closer by rock hopping down to the top of the falls. Please be careful as the rocks can become slippery.

Enjoy a picnic, a bushwalk or just stop in briefly as you tour the many sights to see in the area.

Mt Pilot summit: With an easy walk from the carpark to the summit, you won’t be disappointed.

Dotted in yellow, white and purple wildflowers and with sweeping views of the surrounding plains it’s a photographer’s paradise.

Touring the Indigo Gold Trail INDIGO’S unique Gold Trail can now be explored using a smartphone.

A Gold Trail app was developed last year to help people navigate the rich history of this historic trail.

The Indigo Gold Trail, officially unveiled in 2011, is a touring route connecting the gold heritage towns and sites of Beechworth, Rutherglen, Chiltern and Yackandandah.

The route includes dozens of historic sites including heritage-listed buildings and important gold mining sites.

Indigo Shire Tourism describes it as an evolving collection of gold history, being preserved for future generations to gain an understanding of how important gold mining was in establishing the region.

SMART WAY: Visitors touring Beechworth on the Indigo Gold Trail, can now be guided by a mobile app.

Music festival brings the people good times THE ever growing Beechworth Music Festival continues to go from strength to strength, with the next festival happening on Saturday, January 23, 2016.

All Rhodes lead to Opera in the Alps THE distinctive voice of Teddy Tahu Rhodes will ring out in Beechworth this summer as Australian Music Events once again holds the popular Opera in the Alps event.

The event will be held at Beechworth Golf Course on Saturday, January 16, 2016.

Teddy Tahu Rhodes has been a big name in Australian opera and musical theatre for many years, having starred in a range of productions, from Don Giovanni and Antony and Cleopatra, to The King and I and South PaciďŹ c.

Fishing North East Victoria in summer

SUMMER is a great time to ďŹ sh right across North East Victoria.

The Murray cod season opens on December 1 and remains open right through until the end of August next year.

TROUT Trout ďŹ shing will be quite limited this summer.

It’s been a tough spring after last year’s terrible heatwave took its toll on many waterways.

This summer the small rural streams will be worth avoiding.

Your best bet is to head high into the mountains in search of the cooler water streams with reliable ows.

MURRAY COD Summer is all about Murray cod ďŹ shing in North East Victoria.

Lower reaches of the Ovens, King, Broken, Kiewa, Mitta Mitta, Murray and Goulburn Rivers all have decent numbers of Murray cod, as well as

many of their tributaries.

Bardi grubs are the best bait for larger cod, however, worms catch the most cod although they are usually smaller.

Surface lures and spinnerbaits are also very effective right across the region.

YELLOWBELLY The Broken and Goulburn River catchments are the best places in North East Victoria to target yellowbelly during summer.

The Broken Creek also gets stocked regularly with yellowbelly, and Lake Nillahcootie is the standout lake in the region to target yellowbelly by both boat and land based.

A paternoster rig baited with either a live shrimp, or bunch of garden worms is deadly on yellowbelly, so too are lipless crank bait lures and small spinnerbaits.

Blazing beer trail

SURROUNDED by the shine of rows of brewing equipment and vats, the atmosphere in the shed at Black Dog Brewery at Taminick Cellars is jovial and chatty.

But what is coming together is different to what brewer James Booth produces every day.

This particular amber liquid, a Belgian farmhouse style ale known as grisette, is the product of hard work from a group of passionate brewers who call the North East their home.

As well as James, gathered at the brewery are Ryan Tyack from Bright Brewery, Pete Hull from Sweetwater Brewing Company, and Stefan Landvogt, hailing from Beechworth’s Bridge Road Brewery.

And what this quartet of ale enthusiasts are making together is the latest limited edition beer in a series

they have produced for the past few years as a way to showcase, and raise money to market, the North East Brewery Trail.

Bright Brewery marketing manager James Davidson said the brewers get together each year to produce the special beer, aimed at showcasing the ingredients available in the North East as well as the skills of the brewers.

Pete said after the trail (driven by brewers and facilitated by Tourism

North East) was established, the idea for the collaborative brew came, naturally enough, from chatting over a few beers.

And Ryan admitted the process “is a great excuse to catch up and check out someone else’s brewery”.

“We play around with brewery toys, and we learn from each other,” he said, noting the collaborative beer making process was an ideal way to forge “mateship” between all the brewers.

He said local brewers already had an informal and sharing relationship, often visiting each other’s breweries and trying each other’s beers.

“Everyone’s out to help each other,” Ryan said.

Pete said he enjoyed the collaborative nature of making the brew, and said the profits from its sale go into a pool that helps all the breweries on the trail market themselves.

“It keeps the brand of the High Country Brewery Trail fresh,” he said, adding that the brew has become part of the renewed push towards activity based tourism, including cycling.

“There’s a foundation core of strong brewing history here.”

The collaborative beer, known as High Country Brewers Collaboration Rule 48, will be available from each brewery on the trail.

HUNDREDS of forest and park tracks and roads across Victoria reopened for the warmer weather at the end of October.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) planning manager Tony Dowler said: “Roads and tracks are closed temporarily to protect them from damage during the wetter months each year as part of DELWP and Parks Victoria’s seasonal road closure program. “These roads and tracks were closed over winter and spring for public safety and to protect track surfaces as well as water quality and the forest environment,â€? Mr Dowler said. “While most of the roads and tracks closed over the wetter months reopened in time for the Melbourne Cup weekend, some tracks may remain closed for repairs. “We want all drivers to obey any signs, such as track closures and detours, that they encounter in the bush. “BushďŹ res in recent times have left a legacy of dead or damaged trees in Victoria. “As a result we encourage all forest and park users to take care when entering forested areas and be mindful of the environment you are in. “The forest and park

The business was established in October 2014 by Len Kilpatrick, a knowledgeable local who can give you a new perspective on local landmarks.

He operates an Australian made Oz Trike capable of seating three passengers, the vehicle is fully equipped with seatbelts and complies with Australian design regulation.

Mr Kilpatrick says he caters for a wide range of people, from couples to families or small groups of friends, and he and his trike

have even transported brides and grooms to their weddings.

Tour itineraries are up to the individual customer, and Mr Kilpatrick said that when riding on the trike, taking in the scenery with the wind in your hair, it is more about the trip than the destination.

He covers a wide area in the North East, including Mt Buffalo, Mt Beauty, Myrtleford, Bright and the Ovens Valley, and tours can be anywhere from a half hour in length to a full day.

Helmets are supplied and jackets can be supplied if the weather calls for it.

Parks Victoria acting chief executive officer Chris Rose said while the organisation encouraged people to get outdoors and enjoy the weather, it’s critical people don’t leave a campfire unattended and make sure it is properly extinguished before leaving the area.

“Campfires that escape are a big problem in Victoria with about 10 per cent of all fires on public land started by escaped campfires,” he said.

“While having a campfire is part of the camping experience, we want people to do the right thing including extinguishing them properly using water, not soil, as fires can still smoulder under soil.

Kids getting in touch with great outdoors FOUR of Victoria’s top alpine resorts will play host to hundreds of kids aged four to 12 and their parents from December 2015 to April 2016, pulling them away from screens at home and pushing them into Victoria’s pristine natural alpine environments.

The Adventure Kids Festival, back for its third year, offers a wide range of activities and aims to encourage fun physical activity and a deeper connection with the great outdoors in Victorian families.

GLENROWAN

Plenty of history and things to see JUST over two hoursâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; drive from Melbourne, and 15 minutes by car from Wangaratta, Glenrowan is perhaps most famous as the site of the famous 1880 siege and capture of Ned Kelly and his gang in 1880.

The siege, which took place in late June, 1880, saw the gang take a number of hostages in the Glenrowan Inn, and ended with the death of three gang members and ultimately, the capture of Ned Kelly who was then tried, convicted of murder and hanged on November 11, 1880 at the Old Melbourne Gaol.

Many attractions around the town bring together various aspects of Kelly history, or have books and other paraphernalia on the subject, making it easy for tourists and locals alike to learn more about one of the most larger than life characters in Australian history.

130th Tolmie Sports Day TOLMIE Sports will happen again on Saturday, February 13.

There will be the ever popular woodchop and equestrian events, Trixie the Clown and face painting for the kids, all the novelty and foot races, egg, gumboot and sheaf tossing competitions, dog jump and the premier event of the day, the Three Man Challenge.

This year will see a revamped Three Man Challenge with the return of a horse and rider leg.

The event will occur earlier in the day and the format has had a major revamp, so the surprise will not be

spoiled with too many details, but be prepared to be amazed, excited and thrilled by this unique event.

Historical displays will include the working blacksmith Jack Smith, the Warby Steam Engine display, Old Fergie tractors and Bobâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Curiosity Hut. Take time out at the food and drink precinct under the beautiful old eucalypts. Tables and chairs will be available for patrons to sit, eat, drink and soak up the atmosphere.

If you still have some energy after this action packed day, the traditional Bush Dance will be held in the Tolmie Hall starting at 7.30pm.

Marysville and surrounds open for business PICTURESQUE WALK: Marysville’s Murchison Street offers shopping, food and wine and a pleasant walk in shaded avenues for the visitors.

Visitors passing through the area to the goldfields realised there was beauty to be enjoyed in its own right.

Other pioneer families who left their indelible print on the village of Marysville include Bartons, Keppels and Learys.

Their names also greet visitors – still remembered nearly 150 years later with many of the local attractions and streets named after them.

On February 7,2009, all that changed with the destruction of many homes not only in Marysville but throughout the Narbethong and Buxton area during what is now called the Black Saturday fires.

RENEWAL, REBIRTH, RECOVERY – another version of the old three Rs - has taken place since then and the region is again thriving.

The recovery has been encouraged by the generosity of people from around the world, not only Australians, who knew and loved the area.

Walkabout Apiaries honey very versatile THERE is plenty you can do with the tempting honey varieties at Walkabout Apiaries, from drizzling it on your breakfast to using it in your favourite dish.

In this recipe, it can bring flavour to your next nibbles plate.

MARGARET’S HONEY PICKLE ONIONS Ingredients

I kg small pickling onions 1/2 cup salt and 1 extra teaspoon salt 2 cups white vinegar 2/3 cup water 1/2 to 2/3 cup honey (preferably Red Gum) 1 tablespoon pickling spice 1 red chilli (optional)

Method

Soak onions in boiling water for 15 minutes – drain and peel.

Return to bowl and cover with water mixed with 1/3 cup salt for 48 hours.

Drain and rinse onions in cold water.

In a large boiler, place vinegar, 2/3 of a cup of water, honey, pickling spices and one teaspoon salt and bring to the boil. $GG RQLRQV DQG FRRN IRU ² YH PLQXWHV Divide onions between sterilised jars and cover with hot spiced vinegar.

Seal jars with lids and store in a cool place for two weeks.

Cycle a top rail trail

VICTORIA is home to some of the most iconic rail trails in the country, and one of the best is “The Murray to Mountain Rail Trail”.

This rail trail is the perfect way to discover the diverse landscape of North East Victoria.

Talented new chef at Club Savoy

AFTER months of searching for a new culinary wizard Club Savoy appears to have struck gold with the newest addition to their kitchen.

Club manager Rick Watt was in search of an experienced and confident head chef who could cater for large functions, their bistro dining and had a familiarity with Italian cuisine.

It appears he has found the perfect candidate in Ryan Mendoza who migrated to Australia from the Philippines earlier this year in search of a better life.

With 14 years’ experience working on some of the biggest cruise liners in Europe, including the last four as head chef, it will be a new challenge.

From preparing 3500 meals three times a day and managing 120 cooks and 60 other kitchen staff it’s fair to say he won’t be required to cook-up anywhere near the same number of meals he’s used to.

“We are very lucky to have someone of Ryan’s skill and expertise come and work for us,” Mr Watt said.

“He will take our food offerings to a whole new level as we continue to improve all aspects of our venue here at Club Savoy.”

While Ryan will continue on with the authentic Italian and contemporary Australian dishes the club has always served the man himself hopes to add a new complexion to their dining.

“On the cruise ships I specialised in Italian food as well as going a lot of Spanish and Greek and I hope to add more variety to the menu here,” Mr Mendoza said.

“I will focus on quality fresh food and would really like to offer fresh seafood dishes as something new.

“It’s a beautiful community here and I am very happy to be a part of it and to start work here.”

Showcasing prosperity and diversity THE sub-alpine valley township of Myrtleford in North East Victoria will come to life once again when the community celebrates the 56th Myrtleford Festival to be held from Thursday, March 10 to Monday, March 14, 2016.

Excitement builds for art exhibition ONE of the highlights on the Rutherglen calendar, the Rutherglen District Artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Society Inc are busy preparing for their 23rd annual art and photography exhibition, to be held at the Rutherglen Memorial Hall from March 11-20, 2016.

The exhibition will include the work of two prominent Australian artists, John Olando Birt and Ron Muller.

Broken Hill-born and Adelaideeducated, John Olando Birt attended the South Australian School of Art, studying Fine Art and Art History, and later studied industrial design before moving into the automotive industry.

Now based in Melbourne, he is an accomplished oil painter and given his background, has a keen eye for mechanical objects, including boats.

He is passionate about capturing mood and light in his paintings and prefers to paint on location to capture the essence of the subject.

Ron Muller is widely recognised as an outstanding professional artist and teacher, and conducts numerous workshops both in Australia and overseas.

The exhibition will have an opening night on Friday, March 11, with a $15 entry fee including a light supper and a lucky program competition, as well as words from local councillor Bernard Gaffney.

the entry fee will be $5 per person including a lucky program, and it will be open from March 12-20 from 10am-4pm and on March 15 between 10am-3.30pm.

A RECENT study about recreational ďŹ shing in the Nagambie Lakes has bench-marked angler catches, ďŹ shing methods, angler satisfaction and spending patterns to provide a clear picture of this developing ďŹ shery and how it can grow local tourism in the future.

Fisheries Victoria executive director, Travis Dowling, said the study revealed most anglers were satisďŹ ed with their ďŹ shing experience and that catches were now dominated by golden perch and Murray cod, both of which had been stocked extensively in recent years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Recreational ďŹ shing licence fees have helped stock more than one million golden perch and Murray cod ďŹ ngerlings into the Nagambie Lakes system since 2009 so it is great to see anglersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; investment paying off,â&#x20AC;? Mr Dowling said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The study was undertaken over four summer months by Fisheries Victoria with a contribution from the Shire of Strathbogie, which was keen to know more about the role of ďŹ shing and its economic beneďŹ ts to regional tourism.

THE Wangaratta Art Gallery in conjunction with the Australian Tapestry Workshop is presenting an exhibition of major tapestries from the Tapestry Workshop’s collection until January 24.

It is a rare opportunity to see some of these accomplished works outside Melbourne and an amazing opportunity to see some of the finest tapestries in Australia.

The Australian Tapestry Workshop was established in 1976, is the only workshop of its kind in Australia, and one of only a handful in the world producing hand-woven tapestries.

Artists worldwide are discovering how this traditional medium can be used in completely new ways, and the workshop is in the vanguard of this revival.

Using the same techniques employed in Europe since the 15th century, the workshop’s skilled weavers work with artists from Australia and overseas to produce

tapestries that are known for their vibrancy, technical accomplishment and inventive interpretation.

Its philosophy has been to employ weavers trained as artists enabling close collaboration with the artists whose work they are interpreting.

Many notable Australian and international artists have collaborated with the workshop’s weavers over the years, some of which included in the exhibition are Arthur Boyd, John Olsen, David Larwill, Mike Brown and Lesley Dumbell.

To date, the workshop has created more than 400 tapestries ranging from palm-size to monumental.

They are woven using the finest Australian wool, which is dyed onsite forming a unique palette of 370 colours.

These works hang in significant public and private collections around the world, and now for a period of time, they grace the walls of the Wangaratta Art Gallery.

Bike hub a boon for cyclists

The bike hub, developed with State Government funding through the Local Government Infrastructure Fund ($180,000), Putting Locals First program ($220,000) and North East Transport Connections project ($50,000) along with $242,000 from council, also features a new deck which looks over the picturesque park, offering views not previously afforded, and outdoor seating and bike racks.

Developed in the former comfort station at the intersection of Ryley Street and Ford Street, the facility aims to encourage locals to ride to work â&#x20AC;&#x201C; thereby easing trafďŹ c conditions in the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centre â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and to promote Wangarattaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bike-friendly attitude to visitors.

Cool way to beat the heat in Wangaratta WANGARATTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S splash park is the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new water attraction for locals and visitors alike.

Located in Mitchell Avenue Park, the splash park was completed in November and was built by the same company that built Brightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s splash park, Water Features by Design.

The park is based on a Mountains and Valleys theme that was voted for by local children.

It features a big red bucket that dumps water on those below every few minutes, as well as plenty of other features, including a dragonďŹ&#x201A;y, water mushrooms, tunnels with water jets inside, and a creek running down the side of the biggest mountain.

The splash park operates from 9am to 8pm throughout the summer pool season, which is due to end on March 31 in 2016.

Momentum building for Wangaratta Marathon FUN RUN: The Wangaratta Marathon in February has events suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

AN 80 per cent growth in the number of marathon entrants in the 2015 event gave the Wangaratta Marathon an extra competitive edge.

The Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Run includes a 42km marathon, 21km half marathon, a 10km run or walk, a five kilometre run or walk and a two kilometre primary school challenge.

Organisers Justin and Sharon Scholz had also recorded an increase of 300 entrants across the five events well before it was held, with more runners and walkers continuing to register.

“We’ve been hearing in some running circles that the Wangaratta Marathon is becoming

the marathon of choice because it has all the features of the Melbourne Marathon but without the issues of size, lack of parking and other logistics like that,” said Justin.

“The thing with the Wangaratta Marathon is that it is big, with a good, competitive field and it has all the bells and whistles of the Melbourne Marathon for a fraction of the cost.”

The 2016 Wangaratta Marathon and Fun

Run will be held on Sunday, February 28 at the Wangaratta Showgrounds, with around 2500 entrants expected to take part.

The event is open to people of all ages interested in getting active and having fun, including individuals, community and corporate teams and schools.

Summer is time to party in Yea THE January long weekend will see the historic town of Yea become the centre for music, singing, dance, art displays, food and local wine as the community celebrates its third Arts Carnivale.

Already, local farmers and children are preparing their marvellous hay-bale art to be displayed around Yea and on all approaches to the town, setting the mood for a fun time.

Over the four days this summer the pretty town of Yea is the place to be, with something for everyone and fabulous events scheduled from Friday, January 22 through to Australia Day on Tuesday, January 26.

Festivities kick off with the official opening on Friday afternoon at Yea’s remarkable 19th century railway station with its surrounding 11 acres of parkland and playgrounds.

The exciting “big band” sound of the fabulous “Redgaters” will fill the park with jazz and swing music and make it almost impossible not to want to get up and dance.

Meanwhile the kids can make the most of the many fun projects on offer while parents enjoy the local food and wine.

CULTURE: Music, dance and the arts will be celebrated throughout the historic region during the Yea Arts Carnivale in January.

Through to Australia Day, the Yea Rotary Club’s grand annual art show will display some wonderful work from renowned local artists.

Saturday will see buskers performing throughout the shopping strip, while at the beautiful racecourse, thoroughbreds of all kinds will be putting on a show.

The Yea Cup might be the feature event, but others will be more interested in the “Best Hat Competition” while the kids will love the free jumping castle and other fun activities.

Sunday sees the action at another historic venue – the Cheviot Tunnel.

Built around 1889, the solid brick tunnel is about five kilometres from Yea and is part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail, which now hosts cyclists, walkers and horseriders along the track between Tallarook and Mansfield.

Walk or ride there to see this beautiful piece of 19th century engineering and enjoy the buskers – along with other surprises, or go on a scenic drive to the highlands and visit talented local artists at
