HE Murray River region stretching from Corryong in the east through to Mildura in the west is a priority destination for keen anglers and budding ďŹ shermen alike. Lake Hume near Albury Wodonga covers a surface area of 23,000 hectares and boasts a brimming livelihood of Murray cod, golden perch and redďŹ n. Lake Mulwala is the chief hub of Murray cod especially during the warmer months where numbers multiply. The beginning of cod-ďŹ shing season is celebrated each year in December with the Cod Opening Classic. Victoria’s majestic high country known for its famed alpine ranges as well as mystic mountain streams and picturesque hills and valleys is also a ďŹ sherman’s delight, boasting some of the biggest river-dwelling trout in the country. At the bottom of the misty mountains lies the winding Goulburn River where the trout are plentiful and the banks provide ideal access to launch a line. Lake Eildon is a ďŹ sherman’s haven and brown and rainbow trout, redďŹ n, golden perch and the famous native Murray cod can all be found dwelling prosperously here. A taste of the ďŹ fties T
HE fun of the 1950s will be in full effect in Tallangatta during October, as the town once again holds its annual Tallangatta Fifties Festival on October 25-26. The festival is a mainstay of the local events calendar and was established to commemorate the time when the entire town was relocated to make way for the Hume Dam. With fun, music, markets and more, the festival celebrates all things 1950s. This year’s highlight events begin on the Saturday morning, with the MEGAS Music Battle of the Bands seeing local musicians battle it out for hundreds of dollars worth of prizes. On the Saturday a half marathon will be held, with around 200 competitors expected (entry details at www. eventstallangatta.com.au). Saturday night will see a rollicking rock and roll dance, with music performed by popular band No Brakes, and admission to the dance is just $20.
ROCK ON: Honey B and the Stingers will be performing this year at the Tallangatta Fifties Festival.
The fun continues on Sunday, including a market, cake bake off and more music. The cake bake off with creations made to a rock and roll theme, will begin at 11am. Visitors can enjoy the sounds of Honey B and the Stingers between 12-4pm, and the MC for the day will be sought after local entertainer Rodney Vincent. Entry to Sunday’s event is $15 (under 18 free) and a combined ticket for Saturday’s
Rock and Roll Dance and Sunday’s event is available for $30. Other events taking place during the weekend include car displays, a carnival, and much more. Children’s rides, such as a jumping castle and dodgems, will be available on both days. More information on the festival is available on the website at www. tallangattaďŹ fties.com.au.

F you love a small winery which has loads of history, then John Gehrig Wines is for you. The small Oxley winery is family owned and operated, continuing with tradition and creating innovation along the way. The Gehrig family is justiďŹ ably proud of its reputation as one of the older winemaking families in Victoria, with its heritage stretching back to the late 1850s. John Gehrig, a fourth generation vigneron, established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976, only minutes from the many gourmet delights that the region has to offer. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the ďŹ fth winemaking generation of Gehrigs to craft some ďŹ ne wines. Armed with a wine science degree, international winemaking experiences in Alsace, Burgundy and Israel, Ross’s obsession is in producing the best grapes to produce wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic North East Victorian winery. His strengths and passion include Riesling, pinot noir and durif, but you will also ďŹ nd some hidden treasures like chenin blanc and pinot meunier.
The 2012 Riesling was rated 94/100 by James Halliday in his 2014 Wine Companion, and just recently in the new James Halliday Wine Companion 2015, the 2013 Riesling has kept its points rated 94/100, making John Gehrig Wines a 4 ½ star rated winery. If you are after something red, well, the 2011 durif may be for you, as it was awarded silver (which was top of the class) at the 2013 Victorian Wine Show. When you pay a visit to the winery over spring you may not think there is much happening, but the vineyard is certainly a hive of activity, with pruning being completed ready for the 2015 season to produce some ďŹ ne grapes. The Gehrig family is hoping for an improved season as they received heavy frosts during 2014. With the winter frosts, cool days lifting and with spring in the air, Meghan Gehrig said attention was turning to the aromatic whites like Riesling and chenin blanc, light red like the pinot noir and even people starting to think about sparkling wine. continued page 13....

HE recently opened Ned Kelly Vault presents the largest collection of Kelly Gang artefacts and associated memorabilia in the world. The Kelly Gang members spent many of their days in and around Beechworth and North East Victoria, where their story started before they became outlaws. The museum presents a display of stories and various artefacts not to glorify the Kelly reign, but to ensure that the history is preserved for each person to contemplate the Kelly story. The collection includes original artefacts and more current day memorabilia attributed to the outlaw’s legend. Ned Kelly’s death mask, a gun he had in his possession and photographs will be on display.
As well as some popular modern articles such as the suit of armor Mick Jagger wore in the 1970 movie ‘Ned Kelly’ which is notable for being the ďŹ rst color ďŹ lm produced about the bushranger. IGHT from the start, the Beechworth Bakery has always been so much more than a distinctive building and sought after tourist attraction – it is a vital part of the local community. Each Beechworth Bakery venue is immersed in its local community, supporting sporting as well as other groups, with product, facilities and/or money as well as promotional support. In addition, Beechworth Bakery is a true community gathering place where people can get together and enjoy a conversation as well as a cup of coffee and some delicious food. Beechworth local Karen Nankervis is a familiar face at the bakery each Wednesday afternoon, where she has been meeting friends for 4.30pm catch ups for the past three years. “Working for myself from
home, it’s easy to get distracted catching up with people and not getting any work done, she said, adding that initially she emailed her friends saying that she would be at the bakery at the same time each week, for anyone who wanted to catch up. “There are some that come every week, others that are a couple of times a month and some drop in whenever they can. “We’ve organised trips to shows, concerts, dinners etc; supported each other with family, health and work issues; had a lot of laughs and generally had some ‘me’ time that we all need. “I think the bakery is a great community hub, nice bright inviting atmosphere, good food, and having locals behind the counter is great for other locals, it makes you feel very welcome. Beechworth Bakery marketing

walking and cycling, as well as ďŹ shing swimming and boating,â€? he said. “We want to attract more tourists to the area and see what educational and cultural events might be held there. Lake Sambell management committee chairman Bill van Dorssen and secretary Iris Mannik said major works would be needed in the Chinese Gardens – created between 1997 and 2006 as a memorial to Chinese miners who helped to transform Beechworth into what Ned Kelly biographer Ian Jones described as “the capital of the North Eastâ€? in the second half of the nineteenth century. In announcing the $2 million funding Mr Tilley said Lake Sambell was a valued community asset, enjoyed by residents and visitors since it was created in the 1920s on the former site of the old Rocky Mountain mine workings. He said the new dam wall would meet current standards according to the Australian National Committee On Large Dams (ANCOLD).

OIN the new team at Beechworth Ghost Tours for a night you won’t forget as you are guided though one of the most infamous, darkest and scariest lunatic asylums in Australia. Carina Milone, who runs Beechworth Ghost Tours with her team of paranormal experts, will take you deep inside historical haunted asylum buildings. Before taking over Beechworth Ghost Tours, Carina had experienced many paranormal events and believes now that the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum is the most haunted building in Australia. Opened in 1867 as one of the three main lunatic asylums in Victoria, the Beechworth building housed almost 2000 staff and patients, once hidden by a large “Ha Ha Wall. On their nightly ghost tour, staff take you though the oldest buildings on site where you will hear spine tingling stories of treatments and ghosts that still wander the hall and cells. Ghost tours run seven nights a week, or if you dare, join Fiona Miller, their lead paranormal investigator, who has had over 10 years’ experience in the world of the unknown, on a Paranormal Investigation Tour. Indigenous artworks come UP UIF GPSF JO #SJHIU O
PENING on September 19, and on display until November 4, is a major exhibition of Aboriginal art never before seen in North East Victoria. In fact, because the works of art are from private collections, many of the paintings have never been exhibited in Australia. However, they have been seen in Italy in 2011 to great acclaim. For Time and Place 2, Bright Gallery has chosen the best of the paintings from the exhibition “Dreamtime Lo Spirito Dell’Arte Aborigena’; the largest body of Aboriginal art ever displayed in Europe. These paintings have been described by the Koori Heritage Trust and the Australian Museum as: s MODERN !BORIGINAL ART REPRESENTATIVE OF many regions and styles; s CUTTING EDGE ART THAT REPRESENTS traditional stories expressed in a contemporary style; s ART THAT INCLUDES ESTABLISHED ARTISTS AS WELL as urban artists breaking new ground in
their interpretation of their culture. Artists include Mary McLean and Eunice Napangardi whose wonderful paintings are used on the advertising for the exhibition, Djambu Barra Barra (who combines crosshatching with modern acrylics) and Billy Doolan whose unique stories and style has become familiar to many in Bright. Several Aboriginal communities are supporting the exhibition and providing works for sale at very affordable prices. As a contrast to the ‘modern’ depictions of traditional stories on canvas, we are really thrilled to include examples of the ancient traditions and methods of recording stories. Mike Donaldson, Australia’s foremost photographer and historian of Pilbara and Kimberley Rock Art has agreed to provide a selection of his photographic works shown in the Western Australian Museum. These artworks, listed as National Heritage, have been published with the permission of the traditional owners. Be sure not to miss this unique exhibition.

CHILTERN
Pause and contemplate life T
HE late Robin Williams said: “spring is nature’s way of saying – let’s partyâ€?. And in Chiltern the last vestiges of winter quickly make way for longer fun-ďŹ lled days and a new energy to be outside embracing North East Victoria’s clear air. Children love spring in the country, where they get to spend longer times outdoors in the ever-increasing daylight playing or just going for a walk with the family. Even on the hottest of spring days there is always a zephyr of a breeze to keep you cool. The air is ďŹ lled with the smell of fresh cut grass, the wisps of smoke from cottage chimneys are fast fading, and it is winter sport ďŹ nals time. Visitors to Chiltern are well advised to pause a little on these days and take time to contemplate what is happening beneath their feet.
Sitting on a fallen tree or stump in the Chiltern – Mount Pilot National Park can do wonders for your blood pressure. Around you there will be the song of birds returning from their winter excursion north. Birdwatchers silently rejoice from the cover of their hides at a variety of locations in and around Chiltern. A brochure from the Chiltern Visitor Information Centre will help you identify the birds you see while they too rejoice in the newfound warmth and fresh air. Spring is an ideal time to perfect your “strollingâ€?. Chiltern even has its own walking tour brochure to help you stroll. Spring is soft and warm - the time between the harshness of winter and summer. The menus at the multitude of local ďŹ ne dining establishments

changes in spring. Sit in Conness Street and watch the world go smiling by, or look to the nearby hills of the Chiltern–Mount Pilot National Park. Visit the newly restored Goods Shed at the railway precinct, or even hire a bike from there and see even more of Chiltern. Key events taking place in
Chiltern this spring include the Chiltern Town Garage Sale on November 16, and Mo Ride related activities, raising funds and awareness for men’s health, taking place from November 21-23. More information is available by calling (03) 57261611 or see www.chilternvic.com. There is no place quite like Chiltern in spring.

With its imposing façade, located at 95 High Street, MansďŹ eld, the Delatite Hotel is now being run by owners Dean and Gillian Belle and manager Chris Redmond after being closed late in 2013. Having been extensively renovated in recent months, including improvements to the beer garden and accommodation, the hotel now has a new lease on life. The Delatite Hotel retains its old world charm while presenting a welcoming new look for visitors and locals alike. The beer garden now includes facilities
for bocce and has a giant chess set, ideal for an afternoon’s relaxation. A new beer system has been added and those wishing to enjoy some refreshments have a wide choice – everything from a traditional pot of beer and chicken parma, to a good quality coffee and tempting cake. The hotel, which is located only 500m from the rail trail, has also become more cyclist friendly, with secure bike storage available. Motorcyclists can also have peace of mind, with a lockable carpark located at the rear of the building. There are a dozen accommodation rooms upstairs, ranging from single rooms to rooms that can accommodate families, and the hotel also boasts several function rooms ideal for your next event. The hotel is fast becoming known for live music performances, including blues, jazz and indie music, in their courtyard and front bar. O experience one of the best ‘bush markets’ in Victoria, a visit to the 35th Annual Oxley Bush Market, scheduled for Saturday November 1 at the historic Oxley Shire Hall, is a must. The Oxley Hall Committee, which organises the event, is anticipating another extremely successful ‘market day’, with a huge range of
goods, crafts, produce, clothes and gift items again available for sale at bargain prices. “Apart from the great support we receive from local stallholders, many also travel long distances to the market and large crowds are again expected to ock to Oxley,â€? said Janet Heath, secretary of the hall committee. “Many people come to take advantage of

the specials on offer, but others come to simply enjoy the atmosphere and meet up with old friends,â€? she said. While many of the stallholders are regulars to the market, this year again sees numerous â€˜ďŹ rst timers’ hawking their home-made, home-grown, home-produced and new items. Rides for the children, drinks and toetapping music will add to the festive atmosphere. “The market is in full swing right up until the closing time of 3pm, so those wishing to avoid the morning crowds will ďŹ nd everything happening all day. “And, of course, the hall committee starts drawing the monster community rafe from about 2.30pm,â€? Mrs Heath said. The Oxley Bush Market is again an ofďŹ cial “Waste Wiseâ€? event and the committee is encouraging stallholders and visitors alike to ‘put the right thing in the right bin’. The Oxley Bush Market will commence at 9am and conclude at 3pm. Entry is free, and dogs are not permitted (guide dogs excepted). During spring, customers will ďŹ nd a number of taste tempting mustards, condiments and dressings instore. ENTURE into Milawa Bakery Cafe for a snack or meal this spring, and not only will you ďŹ nd tempting bakery treats, you will also see unique sculptures manufactured right here in the King Valley. Tony Fisher, whose wife Di runs the bakery cafe, has turned his hand to making sculptures made entirely of scrap metal, which are now being sold at the bakery under the name King Valley Sculptures, and visitors can see his latest works in the bakery’s sculpture corner. Mrs Fisher said that he ďŹ nds scrap metal from a number of local sources, from scrap metal yards to clearing sales, and that the
shape of the pieces usually inuences the ďŹ nal sculpture, from birds and animals, to more abstract artistic forms. Sculptures can also be made to order. As well as making the sculptures, running the family’s farm and working regularly at the bakery, Mr Fisher also passes on his welding skills to students at Myrrhee Primary School. Visitors at the bakery cafĂŠ can continue to enjoy their tempting array of food, from their award winning pies to delicious
sandwiches, quiches and frittatas, and an array of beautifully made cakes. There are also several gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options, perfect for those with speciďŹ c dietary needs. EVIN and Robyn Norris of Kaceen Empire, makers of concrete garden ornaments, suffered a crushing blow to their manufacturing plant during the devastating North East bushďŹ res of 2009. The recovery process has been continuous hard work, so to showcase their large range of garden ornaments, they have developed an acre and a half of theme gardens. Visitors enter through a medieval style archway where several rustic buildings immediately stand out, including a lovely stone Welsh cottage.
They then walk through Kevin’s stump garden, a pioneer’s single room hut and Blacksmith Shoppe and a path leading to the banks of the Barwidgee Creek, were you can sit on bench seats among Greek and Romanesque statues. Elsewhere, a fallen eucalypt has been converted into a Wizard’s mystery home, and there is a compact silver birch forest with resident American Indians or Kaw Liga statues, as well as a delightful fairy garden. Guided tours through the gardens can be arranged or visitors may take self-guided
strolls for a gold coin entry. Fairy parties can be arranged by advance bookings. Kaceen have an extensive catalogue of garden ornaments made and stocked onsite, and there is also a gift shop. Kaceen Empire is at 913 Myrtleford/ Yackandandah Road, Myrtleford and is open 9am-4pm each Monday, Thursday and Friday and 10am-3pm on weekends. HE 2014 lineup for the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival has been announced, with another exciting program for Australia’s much-loved festival, now in its milestone 25th year. Across the four days and nights of the pre-Melbourne Cup Day long weekend – Friday, October 31 to Monday, November 3 the city will jump to the sounds of jazz and blues, from more than 300 musicians in over 80 concerts on the main program, and over 30 concerts on the Main Street free stages; as well as artist talks and masterclasses,

all in venues in walking distance within the township, and at nearby wineries. The program features a lineup of international jazz and blues artists from the USA, Italy and New Zealand performing alongside the cream of Australia’s best musicians. Artistic director Adrian Jackson said “25 years is a landmark that no-one would have been willing to bet on back when the festival began as a relatively modest but ambitious event in 1990. “The fact that we have made it this far is due to the incredible
support the festival has received from the local community, and the way it has been embraced so enthusiastically by musicians and music lovers from around Australia and overseas, he said. “We have a strong component of international artists coming this year, like Enrico Rava, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Joe Louis Walker. “Among them are several expatriate Australians like Lisa Parrott, Harper, Troy Roberts and Sarah McKenzie. The program also features a strong lineup of jazz vocalists
and the blues program will be headlined by Blues Hall of Famer Joe Louis Walker (USA), one of the hottest guitarist-singers in the business; and trailblazing singer/songwriter, and virtuoso harmonica and didgeridoo player Harper, joined by a strong lineup of Australian blues acts. The National Jazz Awards feature guitarists this year and an increased prize pool. For more information and ticket bookings see www. wangarattajazz.com, or keep tabs on the festival’s Facebook or Twitter feeds.

OME visit every year, some are new to the area, but all who come to stay at Yackandandah Holiday Park come away impressed with the facilities, friendly hospitality and central location of the park. Yackandandah Holiday Park has been run under the new management of Trevor and Shirley Barker for the past year. The couple have had many years of experience in hotel management, and are dedicated members of the local community. Mr Barker said the holiday park, while green and luscious year round, is a restful oasis during warmer months. Guests can take advantage of the two creeks that border the park – Yackandandah Creek and Commissioner Creek – to enjoy a cool paddle or maybe try some ďŹ shing. The communal barbecue area has also been recently
renovated, including a new fridge and stove, just in time for guests to enjoy relaxing warm weather barbecues. Yackandandah Holiday Park is a quiet, secluded spot, but is also a short 300m walk from Yackandandah’s bustling shops and tourist attractions. The diverse range of accommodation includes powered caravan/camping sites, ensuite sites, and cabins. Visitors can explore the natural beauty of Yackandandah and surrounds, or use the park as a base to explore the many attractions of the North East. Bookings are currently being taken for the Christmas-New Year period. Yackandandah Holiday Park is located at 1 Dederang Road, Yackandandah. URING the year ending March 2014, Australians took more domestic overnight trips than ever before and spent $52.3 billion, the latest National Visitor Survey released by Tourism Research Australia has found. “The higher level of overnight trips and expenditure was reported across all purpose of visit categories, with the largest increases being for those travelling for business or visiting friends or relatives, said Dr Leo Jago, Tourism Research Australia’s chief economist. “While the number of trips is up to record levels, the average length of these trips reduced
slightly, Dr Jago said. The majority of overnight trip expenditure (76 per cent) was spent in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. The domestic holiday sector showed only a small increase as the strong Australian dollar continues to lure Australians away from home. While the number of Australians holidaying domestically has increased by 10 per cent since the year ending March 2006, Australians holidaying overseas increased by 131 per cent over the same period. The National Visitor Survey is available at www.tra.gov.au.
ingredient at the Giddy Goat CafĂŠ, however, was fun. “We love what we do, enjoying the whole process of menu planning, preparation and then feeding the masses with our delicious goodies. “There’s always lots of laughs, and genuinely warm and friendly customer service is our style.â€? Ms Baker said that the food offered by the cafĂŠ was hugely popular with visitors and locals alike, and said people come from miles around for their famous vanilla slices and passionfruit sponge. Staff at the cafĂŠ are preparing a spring menu to accommodate the many travellers that appear as the weather turns fair, including the inux of cycling tourists. “Being adjacent to the Great Victorian Rail Trail means we see lots of cyclists and we do our best to offer light, fast and tasty meals for those about to jump back on their bikes and pedal off into the
distance,â€? Ms Baker said. The Giddy Goat CafĂŠ not only welcomes humans, they are also accommodating for man’s best friend, with a dog friendly area making a perfect stop for those travelling with or walking their pooch. People with food allergies/ intolerances can also be catered for. “Being that we cook everything from scratch, we can nearly always ďŹ nd you something scrumptious to eat,â€? Ms Baker said. “If you seriously want to indulge, stay overnight in our B and B, Yarckcottage and be ready to launch a new attack on our reknowned Cake Fridge the next day.â€? Giddy Goat CafĂŠ is open from Thursday-Sunday for breakfast and lunch from 6.30am, and you can ďŹ nd details on their Facebook page by searching for Giddy Goat CafĂŠ Yarck, or their website at www.giddygoat.com.au.
