After a wet and wild start to the weekend, runners enjoyed clear skies as they powered through either a 2km kids run, a 5km run, a 10km run, a 21.1km half marathon and a full 42.2km marathon. Registrations in the event’s second year trumped last year’s by 20 percent.

More than 640 runners had the chance to run through four beautiful vineyards and soak up the country scenery at the second annual Four Vines Running Festival on Sunday November 3. Starting in Avenel at Fowles Wines, the runners journeyed through the vineyards of Box Grove and Mitchelton Wines, finishing at Tahbilk Winery.

Four Vines Running Festival is known for it's over sized, heavy medals, and the food, wine and live music experience at the finish line and the 2019 edition of Four Vines did not disappoint. Runners, family and friends toasted their achievements and settled in to enjoy the festivities and surrounds.

Festival organiser Mel Likos said the 2019 event had been well received, “The rain on Saturday settled the dust and the running conditions were perfect. We already have participants wanting to register for next year’s event.”

Strathbogie Shire Council has released its draft Arts and Culture Strategy which aims to increase opportunities for creative stimulation and connectedness, increase arts and cultural experiences, preserve heritage and foster diverse cultural sustainability in the shire.

I can't believe after the severe drought we had early this year that my garden has bounced back into it's best show ever.

Last Spring I threw a heap of poppy seeds into the garden and left them with no attention you just can't imagine how many I have this year it's just a glorious show of red poppies and of course they seem to have the knack of flowering in time for Nov 11th Remembrance day - isn't nature wonderful?

This season I have some glorious irises blooming and the new colours I purchased last year are starting to flower now. As you probably know, I am a great Iris collector and the colours available if you shop around privately are worth the one time bloom every year.

As I am into recycling everything in a big way I have found a use for those white plastic knives that you buy in packs in the supermarket or the op shop that people still struggle to use at parties or picnics.

Perfect garden and plant markers, just get your waterproof pen and write the plant’s name on the blade end of the knife and insert the handle end into your garden or pot plant, very tough and they cost next to nothing.

On Sat Nov 23rd a project which I have been working on as a volunteer to help establish a Community Garden in Seymour has it's opening day. An initiative of the Salvation Army, the garden has been constructed by a group of volunteers who have done a fantastic job. Come and see our garden from 9.30 am to 4 pm at 8-10 Victoria St, Seymour (next to Salvos Op Shop). Demo's on Chicken care, Bonsai, Glass and ceramics, worm farming and composting and fruit fly management are on during the day. Live music, silent auction, jumping castle, pony rides and a big plant and veggie sale are all there for you.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor, Cr Amanda McClaren sits on the Arts and Culture Advisory Group who have developed the draft Arts and Culture Strategy.

“Council recognised the need for a greater focus on supporting and developing arts and culture within our communities, which was highlighted by our community at the beginning of our Council’s term and features in our Council Plan,” Cr McClaren explained.

“We had great conversations with our community during the development of the strategy and what we heard was that people wanted more opportunities to tell their stories and celebrate local identities, more opportunities for entertainment and community events and better access to arts and cultural experiences,” Cr McClaren said.

“What we have created is a strategy that looks to achieve these things by stimulating creativity and connectedness, supporting growth and learning and supporting our community to preserve and celebrate our culture.”

“After listening to our community and developing this draft strategy, we hope that we are better positioned to support arts and culture within our shire going forward.”

Tourism, Arts and Culture Advisory Group member and local artist Tess Noonan Egan said the draft strategy aims to strengthen the important connections needed for success between local government and our community.

“Communities will bring the ideas and energy as they always have, but now there will be a deeper understanding of where local government can contribute, enhance and value what is being suggested,” Ms Noonan Egan said.

Council encourages our community to take a look at the strategy and provide feedback to be considered in the final review before it goes to Council for consideration.

Nagambie Sub-Branch President, David Keall, is calling on the local community to support this year's Poppy Appeal, “from November, our volunteers will be selling the much-loved and iconic red poppy in our local community.”

“By purchasing a poppy, you are not only remembering those who have served in the past, but you are also helping to support those who are still serving today, as 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of every poppy goes towards supporting service men, women and their families in times of need.”

RSL Victoria State President, Dr Robert Webster OAM, added: “Every donation to the Poppy Appeal contributes to the RSL’s vital work of supporting veterans and their families when in need.”

“For example, the funds raised by the sale of single $10 Poppy Appeal pin may go towards the purchase of a mobility scooter for an elderly veteran, pay for a young veteran’s crisis accommodation, and support health and wellbeing programs for veterans throughout Victoria,’ he said.

Dr Webster went on to say that people should feel proud then they wear the Poppy.

“You should feel proud when you wear the red poppy, as your donation will have helped to change a veteran’s life.” he said.

MURCHISON STAND TOGETHER

There has been a lot of publicity about the demonstrations throughout Australia in relation to climate change.

However, for one small country town there was a demonstration of a different kind last week.

The residents of Murchison, turned out in force to show their disgust at the decision to close the DP Jones Nursing Home.

Warwick Gregory, the interim Chairman of the Murchison Community Action Group which convened the meeting, said “we were overwhelmed by the support our town has shown for its vital community assets; the Nursing Home, the Neighbourhood House and the Medical Centre and Pharmacy. This

The Member for Nicholls Damian Drum and the Member for Euroa Steph Ryan were also in attendance and addressed the meeting.

Mr Gregory explained that those in attendance were astonished to hear the magnitude of the financial situation of the nursing home, and a number expressed their concern about how the nursing home got into the position in the first place and the

lack of financial support from the Federal Government to enable another accredited aged care operator to operate the home.

Damian Drum and Steph Ryan both told the meeting that they would work hard on behalf of their constituents to see if a financial solution can be found.

Mr Gregory finished the meeting by imploring all those present “to make sure you let your local members and politicians of all persuasions just how important aged care and health facilities are in Murchison, and throughout Australia”.

These were the most common items found in the recycling bin which do not belong there.

Where provided, take plastic shopping bags and food wrappers to the collection bins at your local supermarket.

Otherwise, place all soft plastic packaging in your garbage bin, not your recycling bin.

Place recyclables loosely in your recycling bin to ensure they are recycled.

All household garbage including bagged waste belongs in the garbage bin not the recycling bin.

Bulky items

Clothing, shoes, blankets and linen should be donated if in good condition or placed in the garbage bin if in poor condition.

These items cannot be recycled in your kerbside recycling bin. Take them to your local Resource Recovery Centre instead.

Samuel Johnson, Gold Logie winning actor, advocate and winner of Dancing with The Stars, has raised $10m, campaigned at over 800 community events and continues his mission travelling the country in his motorhome, amassing an army around the issue of personalised medicine for ALL Australian cancer patients.The right treatment, first time, every time!

Movember is upon us and there’s nowhere to hide. Look around you and see if you can spot the mo’s.

There will be a few mo's that flourish and a few that‌well‌might be struggling a tad.

Try the Post office for starters, Andrew has been known to lead the pack in the past.

Failing that, take a walk along Lakeside Drive, there are a few shady characters along there. Check out the Bowls Club on a Wednesday morning where you will always find a few desperados.

Movember is the month that men create an awareness of their health issues which may include depression, prostate cancer and

loneliness. Men don’t often seek help, but we are getting better at it.

To celebrate this month there will be three special events; The Pub to Pub walk on 10th Movember.

Starting at 6.30 am from the Royal Mail, Nagambie to the Murchison East Hotel. Run, ride, walk the full distance or just part of it. If you can’t do that, just come and have a cool drink with us at the finish line. Entry is by donation and it is open to all-comers. There will be support vehicles, so if you feel at all

stressed there will be help at hand. Maybe you know someone who is participating, then you could support them with a donation. All funds raised stay in Nagambie.

Following that is the breakfast. To be held at the Royal Mail, starting at 7.30am through to 9.00am on Wednesday, 13th Movember.

Cost is $20 per person and there will be entertainment by Russell Turner. Guest speaker is Brent Davies from Goulburn Physiotherapy. Lots of prizes have been donated, so get in quick as bookings are filling fast.

EPA Regional Manager for the North East, Renee Palmer, says the management responsibilities for a landfill continue long after it has been closed. “Landfill gas and leachate are normal issues with any landfill, even long after it has been closed and covered, and EPA uses licensing and Post Closure Pollution Abatement Notices (PC PANs) to apply conditions that the operator must meet, for the protection of the environment and public health,� Ms Palmer said.

Landfill gas is generated as organic material in the landfill decays. Leachate is created as part of the breakdown of organic material in the landfill and when rainwater soaks through the buried waste and collects decaying organic material on the way. “In this case, the Council failed to report to EPA that the landfill was not compliant with licence limits on those emissions,� Ms Palmer said. “Leachate and landfill gas must be properly managed to prevent them from affecting ground or surface water and causing problems with odour. When the licence holder fails to notify EPA of a non-compliance, it hinders the Authority’s

ability to require that licence holder to take action to fix the problem,� she said. Among the conditions EPA placed on the former Violet Town Landfill are requirements for environmental monitoring and the reporting of any non-compliance with the licence limits.

Strathbogie Shire Council has now employed a Waste Management Officer, whose role includes overseeing the management of the former landfill. EPA will look to work with Council to ensure it meets its environmental obligations at the Violet Town landfill.

Under the Environment Protection Act 1970 and the Infringements Act 2006, the Council has the right to have the decision to issue the

infringement notice reviewed or alternatively to have the matter heard and determined by a court.

Victoria’s new environment laws take effect on 1 July 2020 and introduce a general environmental duty requiring businesses and individuals to prevent harm to the environment and human health. The hall has never looked better, there was so much to be done and everyone pulled their weight to ensure the much overdue and greatly needed spring clean ensured the birthday party was able to reflect the renewed intentions and enthusiasm of all involved.

Margaret Page, our life member of 33 years was acknowledged by the President, John Berry and her long contribution is recognised and much appreciated.

We were very grateful to have the Larks come to perform and our other main entertainer was Charles Calleja.

Everyone enjoyed the show, and some tables were moved later to allow for some dancing, further appreciating the great music.

The food was certainly plentiful and enjoyed by all. A lot of attention was paid to ensuring all members were catered for, with their special dietary needs considered. Thanks go to those who worked in the kitchen and all the preparation in the days before, well done.

A birthday cake also marked the occasion and plenty of desserts were also provided.

The committee have been working hard to ensure the needs and requests of members are their first priority, so please ensure you let your views and ideas known so they can be catered for in the planning of the calendar for next year.

We hope to have many exciting events that will be allowing everyone to have a say in our

inclusive club. The committee has already achieved so much in the short time they have been installed, and the new chairs are certainly a highlight. Everyone agrees how comfortable they are and how long overdue their need has been.

BOOK LAUNCH - SPACE GEM

Murchison and District Historical Society has launched its newest book, Space Gem – Mysteries of the Murchison Meteorite. The new book coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Murchison meteor landing in September, 1969.

Space Gem contains a host of amazing meteorite facts, eyewitness reports and images, together with an extensive glossary and list of resources to encourage readers to navigate the never-ending treasure trove relating to this world-famous meteorite.

With this being the only witnessed meteorite fall in Victoria, as well as one of the world’s most studied and celebrated meteorites, scientists have confirmed that it is one of the most important meteorite falls in human history.

Space Gem also reveals scientific facts and findings relating to one of the world’s most primitive CM2 (Type 2) carbonaceous chondrites which rained hundreds of meteorite pieces along a 11.3-km long trajectory in the Murchison district on Sunday, 28 September 1969, two months following man’s first footsteps on the Moon.

JIM WEBSTER JOINS THE COTAGENERIAN CLUB Well known and respected local businessman Jim Webster was able to celebrate his 80 th birthday with his family on Sunday 29 September at Fowles winery.

Jim’s actual birth date was 26 September.

Jim has not been too well lately, but was happy that he could celebrate this milestone in his life and has been able to get back pottering in his shed now it is warmer.

Congratulations Jim on turning 80 from your family and friends and the district community of which you have worked and served for many years.

It is with pleasure that I present my Nagambie Rowing Club report for 2018-19 - Henry Moss Buckley Park has been a very busy place with a large number of rowers enjoying social and competitor action with quite a lot of success.

Here at High Street we have had a very good year with the business showing very favourable figures. We are continually putting back into the Club with things such as our new Bistro furniture and electronic notice boards. The Gaming Machines are continually being updated. We have also purchased new boats and other rowing equipment to the value of $66,000. The Flat at Buckley Park has had quite an update to make the area more user friendly. The Club ran two very successful Rowing Regatta.

The Head of the Goulburn being one of the best events on the Rowing Calendar.

The two day February Regatta was a great success.

I would like to thank everybody involved in running these events; all active rowers and volunteers, Meryl & Louise McNamara, all our river hazard markers and especially Rosie & Ian Metherall for allowing us to start the Head of the Goulburn from their property.

Due to the efforts of a lot of members, I consider we as a Club are a very good “Community Citizen”. We contribute to a large list of worthy causes, namely: Flying Doctor, Walk for Kids, Nagambie Football, Netball, Bowls, Tennis, Golf Clubs, Bailieston CFA, Murchison Community Centre, Karingal Lodge, Nagambie Pre School, Nagambie Bridge Club & Nagambie Healthcare.

PHIL O’BRIEN RECOGNISED FOR HIS WORK WITH SCHOOL CHILDREN The wonderful connection between senior citizens and younger children is being recognised very much nowadays.

LAKEVIEW LODGE HOSTEL RESIDENT PHIL O’BRIEN

Grade 4 students of Nagambie Primary School have for many years been making friends with the older residents of the Lakeview Lodge Hostel. They visit the old folk each week to play games, talk, and enjoy each other’s company.

Recently, students from the Nagambie Primary School who have good connections with Lakeview Lodge hostel resident Phil O’Brien gathered for a special presentation to Phil on Thursday, 17 October at the hostel.

Other residents, hostel staff and volunteers attended the presentation to show their support for Phil and the children. Phil’s son Robert and wife Judy came especially up from Melbourne for the special occasion.

Phil’s two daughters were unable to make it but sent their best wishes. Local friend Terry Keenan was also proud to attend.

Phil in his early years was a VFL football player in the Hawthorn team and wore the No 15 Guernsey. He played over seventy games in the 1950’s for the Hawks and was assistant coach in the early 1960’s when

they won a premiership. He also played for Victoria, when only the 20 best players in the whole league were selected.

Phil over many years while living in Boyd Street, near the school, went along and helped out on sports days. For the years he has been in the hostel he has played games and chatted with the students from the Nagambie Primary School. Phil is greatly admired by the students for his kindness and enthusiasm to talk to them about sport.

“I wanted to say a few words” said School Principal Rob French who spoke on behalf of the school students who over the years have appreciated Phil’s support. I wanted to say thank you to the residents for inviting the school children into their home each week.

The children like visiting with you as I am sure you like them coming here too.”

“One special resident has been Phil, and he has made some special connections over the years with many students, especially the boys.

They are always touched by his friendliness and kindness and are also impressed that he played football for the Hawks. Phil always enjoys their company and makes them feel special. At our school we learn about kindness and how important it is for us all”.

Phil came along to school a few years back when Hawks Captain Luke Hodge visited the school. They realised that they both wore the No 15 jumper. Luke ran a footy clinic at the school and Phil enjoyed his day there with one of his club Successors.”

Mr French said “We had an idea for a presentation for Phil. A Hawthorn jumper signed by Luke Hodge was in the hallway.

We thought it would be good if Phil signed it

too. Then the school contacted his family and were able to obtain a special pic of Phil when he was a young Hawks player, and a couple of pics of him and Luke Hodge were also in the gift that was framed for Phil’s presentation.

Another highlight was finding and including Phil’s footy card from the 1950s.”

Young Darcy Bale and Bryce Ashcroft presented the framed souvenir gift to Phil and his son Robert thanked all for the magnificent gesture they have given his father. He thanked everyone for the special day to help Phil celebrate his memories.

Young Bryce then gave Phil a small Hawthorn football that he had purchased himself as a Memento.

Congratulations Phil on behalf of the school and general community for your kindness and for your support of our young children.

A HOUSE OPEN TO EVERYONE It’s November and Christmas is approaching fast. Before you know it there will be Christmas music playing in every store, beautiful decorations lighting up our street and that vague look of panic in the eyes of all parents with little kids. This time of the year is usually also often a time to look back at the year that’s gone, remember the good and the bad and start setting up new goals for whatever is to happen on the other side of the New Years Eve fire works. The Nagambie Lakes Community House would like to invite you to participate in this process. Come and stroll down memory lane with us and help us think up some new exciting plans for 2020.

I work with some of the most generous, fun, talented and hard working people I’ve ever met. They lead our different groups, arrange ‘one off courses’, set up stalls at the market, fix catering for the library author talks and are in so many ways contributing in making Nagambie an amazing place to live.”

The Nagambie Lakes Community House has been a vital part of the Nagambie Community for over ten years. We have run Garden Groups, Welcome Groups Ukulele Groups and many more for a lot longer than there’s been a Black Caviar Statue by the lake. This work has been carried out by many devoted volunteers, who have laughed, laboured and contributed in a way that is truly inspiring.

This year has seen many new activities and groups started, like a Music and Drama group for Primary school children, a Photography Group, a Computer Group. However, we have also welcomed a few already existing groups in under our umbrella, such as the Neighbourhood Watch, the Boomerang Bags and GoMen, who work to raise awareness for men’s health. “I love that we can offer a ‘home’ to these groups who might otherwise not have a place to meet,” Anna says. “I’ve always believed that we are stronger together, and by working alongside one another we can draw strength and inspiration from one another. In my role as coordinator I’m also able to support and be a bit of a backup if necessary.”

Back in April, The Community House coordinated a big Block Party alongside the Youth Hub and Strathbogie Shire. Over 200 people found their way down to Glass Square where there were inflatable soccer balls, jumping castles, pizza, sausage sizzles, archery wars and different games for people to participate in. “I loved that we were able to provide a fun, family event during the school holidays for all those who for different reason stayed in town. My favourite part however, was probably to see so many different community groups come together. The CFA was there, so also were the Lions, the Police, Ambulance Victoria, the Men's Shed, different Community House Groups, the Neighbourhood Watch and different representatives from the Strathbogie Shire. So many people do so many amazing things for our community, and it was beautiful to see them all come together and share their knowledge and experience.”

With the start of 2019 however, the Community House started receiving funding from the Department of Health and Human Services. In brief, this meant the House, for the first time, was able to employ a coordinator helping to expand and broaden the work already carried out. Anna

STATE CHAMPION Congratulations to Hugh Murphy from St. Joseph's who became the State Champion last week for triple jump in the boys 12/13 year old category. Hugh jumped 10.69m and won by 1cm!

To compete against the best young athletes in the state is a tremendous achievement and acknowledges the talent, commitment and resilience of these students. All of them performed well in their events – Eliza 1500m, Campbell discus, Charlie 100m, long jump & shot put and Brodie 100m, 200m & shotput.

Congratulation to Jacinta who earned three medals from her three events – 1 st in the shot put, 2 nd in the 100m and third in the long jump.

NAGAMBIE PRE-SCHOOL

THE CHILDREN AT NAGAMBIE PRE-SCHOOL AND CHILDCARE THIS WEEK CELEBRATED HALLOWEEN. The children in both the Kinder groups and the childcare centre dressed up in costumes ranging from scary to fairy. We had dinosaurs, aliens, princesses, witches, ghosts, super heroes, cartoon characters as well as movie characters. Lots of different costumes graced our rooms.

In the Kinder we decorated the room with spider webs, and we made large black spiders and spooky looking bats, scary looking pumpkins, we also made chocolate spiders to eat.

Yum Yum. We read, “There is room on my broom for you”, and Meg and Mog books, keeping with the Halloween theme.

NAGAMBIE GOLF The Nagambie open sponsored by the The Royal Mail Hotel 'The Top Pub' Nagambie attracted a big field of players from far and wide. The unpredictable spring weather held out for the Sunday four ball best with some great scores returned on the day. The winning pair in the men's event were Daryl Harrison and Michael Roberts compiling the impressive total of 47 points. Harrison a visitor from Tatura on a handicap of 17 showed a liking to the Nagambie course firing potentially a 78 off the sticks and Michael Robert turning up when needed with birdies on the longer holes helped the guys take the win. A count back was needed for runners up with 3 pairing all recording 46 points at the end of that, Kelly Cheong and Garrick Campbell from Rushworth were awarded second place, follow

by Michael Le Deux with the late hook up with Heath Wylie from Avenel, the unlucky fourth place went to the brothers O'Connell with Mick and Bill producing a solid 46 points.

AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MID WEEK Division 2 travelled to Hill Top to play round 5 of mid week pennant. Hill Top were successful by a mere two shots, Avenel 2-71 lost to Hill Top 14-73. Joyce White, Iris Sidebottom, Archie Patterson, Jenny Furletti (s) were 12 down after end 17, then won the next 5 ends including a six to bring them 2 up after end 22. It was a mighty come back but Hill Top scored 3 shots on the last end for a one point win over Avenel, 27 – 28. Ruth King, Graeme Toy, Noel Slater, Grace Kenworthy (s) won the first 3 ends in a promising start but could not head off a strong Hill Top unit who took the points with a 16-29 win. Kate Donovan, Dennis McGregor, David Furletti, Pam Pedder (s) got off to a flying start with a 14-1 lead after 8 ends and were never challenged to secure a 22 – 16 win. Division 2 remain in seventh spot on the ladder and the next game is against 5 th placed Tatura at home after the Melbourne Cup bye.

The women's event was exciting as always with a tightly bunched field at the top but it was the popular pairing of Annette Mills and Ronda Richards that walked away winners with a stylish 44 points, Richards winning speech was as commanding as her days golf helping out the bar takings on the day. Runners up were Maureen King and Pam Pedder combining beautifully for 42 points beating the pedigreed pair of Moz Fowler and Sally Bazeley on count back.

Division 5 had a bye and are in sixth spot on the ladder with the next game against Seymour at home after the Melbourne Cup bye.

The women's nearest the pins went to Lyn McLean claiming both the 3rd and 8th and visiting Avenel golfer Pam Pedder getting the job done on the 13th and 16th. The November monthly medal was played across the Melbourne cup long weekend with plenty of activity on the course due to the extra days away from work, and the rain from the night before meant to course was in good order. The first medalist for the new year was Shane McCormick making a putt on the last hole of the day to go into a count back to claim the medal, McCormick returned a 79-8-71.

Dean Brown was runner up with a steady round throughout signing for a 81-10-71, third place was rounded out by another quality golfer in the way of Graeme Galvin a winner of three monthly medals over the previous 12 months, Graeme carded a handicap equaling 82-10-72.

WEEKEND PENNANT A wash out was declared without a bowl going down for Avenel teams in Division 4 and Division 6E. Games from this round have been rescheduled for 21 December. Next Saturday Division 4 play Euroa at home and Division 6E play Euroa at Euroa.

November is the month for the VicHealth ‘Girls on the Grass’ initiative. There are spots left for morning and evening sessions on Wednesdays through out November. NAGAMBIE CRICKET CLUB No cricket was played last Saturday due to the inclement weather but after the opening month of the season all teams have registered at least one win.

To great excitement the under 10 team recorded their first win in their second season in the Shepparton competition,. The side has steadily improved due to the efforts of coach Amber Langham.

The under 12's are in sixth position after winning two of their first three matches.

Flynn O'Brien and Campbell Baker are leading the way with the bat. The under 14 team have also won two out of three games are are in third place. Darby O'Brien has the distinction of being the top run scorer in the division.

The under 16 team occupy top spot after two wins and an exciting tie in their last match. Will O"Brien and Angus Murray are the most successful bowlers whilst Jonathon Moore and James Auld are the best of batsmen.

The A Grade team have made the most of a favourable schedule with three wins and a draw in their first four rounds. Sitting in third position the side has batted well each week with Mark Nolan the top run scorer.

Jonathon Moore and Brayden Biggs have four wicket apiece.

The C Grade team have batted well in all three matches, narrowly losing the first two.

In their winning result, James Auld batted the entire innings scoring 53 not out, Will Ulrich made 42 and Will Baker remained 38 not out. Will Baker is also the leading wicket taker for the side with Blair TaylorLloyd the top run scorer. Sam Villenger and Michael Sloan are welcome additions after a few years break.

The Master Blasters, 5 to 7 year age group, has commenced on Thursday afternoons .

The six week program , co ordinated by Rick Misiti, is a fun introduction to cricketing skills and a good work out for Rick!

The major fund raiser for the club was held last Sunday. The Melbourne Cup Calcutta was a roaring success, thanks to all who supported and assisted with the event in particular spruikers Linc Sullivan and Tyson Bush.

NAGAMBIE PETANQUE CLUB The club is pleased to have the Nagambie Primary School children participating again for 5 weeks as part of their Kids Matter Program.

They will be coming along on Wednesday afternoons. We are going to be having some lessons and games for them to participate in, learning the basics of Petanque. We know they enjoyed the last time we did the program, and this demonstrates the versatility of the game, and the wide age range able to participate. The game is suitable to all ages and abilities and very easy to learn.

We have adjusted to daylight saving times for our practices and now start at 3pm on both the Thursday and the Sunday. The weather last week was wonderful, and a most enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

If you would like to come try our fun game at our regular practice times, we meet at 3 pm on Thursday and Sunday at our piste area behind the public pool, Recreation Reserve, Vickers Road.

We are quite flexible and have worked on other times that may suit others so please give us a call if you would like to arrange other times.

NAGAMBIE RIFLE CLUB Nagambie Target Rifle Club members cleaned up the trophies Friday night at the annual presentation. Josh Weaire took out the FO champion and the long range individual, Craig Weaire (Dad) won the FS champion, the team won the sought after, McCauliffe Shield as well as the new revived Tehan Shield, 2 years in a row. Congratulations, well done team.

Congratulations to all other winners, a great night was had by all with raffles and a fantastic meal at the Royal Mail Hotel, a big thanks to Trevor & staff.

A FAMILY TRADITION REACHES A 50 YEAR MILESTONE In the early 1960s Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wine and food scene was not nearly as diverse and exciting as it is today. There were no FXOLQDU\ LFRQV PHDW DQG WKUHH YHJ VWLOO UXOHG WKH WDEOH DQG \RX ZHUH PRVW OLNHO\ WR FRQVXPH IRUWLÂżHG ZLQH <HW E\ WKH turn of the decade attitudes towards food and wine had shifted from the 6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;oclock swill to enjoying liquor as a leisurely drink with food.

Innovative by nature, the Purbrick family took advantage of the change in community attitudes opening the first ever Cellar Door in the region in November 1969 as soon as legislation was changed allowing wineries to sell direct to the public.. Now 50 years on and the original cellar door continues to pave the way for a vibrant tourism economy in the Nagambie region.

The beginnings of the Cellar door started without any fanfare. Legislation of the time ensuring all liquor was locked away behind cyclone wire screens out of hours, but the Tahbilk cellar door was finally open for business.

In 1988 the Liquor Control Act was introduced which saw the Tahbilk Cellar Door being able to remove the ugly lock up cage and so ensued a tidy up of the Cellar Door area to be more visually appealing to the public. The coming decade would see Tahbilk boom as a tourism site despite the recession, Tahbilk taking the plunge to formalise Ericâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newsletter to create the Tahbilk Wine Club in 1993.

The Tahbilk Cellar Door was complemented in 2005 with the addition of the Tahbilk Wetlands View CafĂŠ and the opening of the wetlands walking tracks. These investments saw an increase in visitor numbers to the region and new partnerships with local groups such as the Dookie Seedbank and the Nagambie Farmers Market.

Eric Purbrick had long been pioneering varietal labelling in Australia. Unhappy with the use of generic wine labelling such as moselle, burgundy, hock or claret he sought to argue against their pointless application.

The cellar door opening enabled him to take his fight against generic labelling up a level by teaching visiting wine lovers about this very cause. The success of varietal labelling culminated for Tahbilk in 1979 with the inaugural release of the 1860 Vines Shiraz.

The distinct Shiraz and Marsanne varieties, so perfectly suited to the Nagambie region, have become synonymous with the names Purbrick and Tahbilk.

With a growing interest in wine continuing Eric sent his first newsletter to his dedicated following in 1971. By the late 1980s the Australian wine and food industry was evolving alongside the establishment of the International Slow Food movement, Taste Festivals and the introduction of
