The first word

Welcome to our August edition and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. The snow is starting to kick up another gear and you can see by this great picture, there has been great skiing after the mid July storm. The resorts are nearly in full swing as we go to print, and August is shaping up as a great month. As much that is going on with the snow, there is so much more happening in the region. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Cooma for a Snowy 2.0 update. Let’s hope the feasibility study on this huge projects gets the green light in the near future, which would be massive news for the Snowy Mountains. We have updated news on the Perisher Range Governance Review. NPWS at this stage have not granted a head lease for Perisher Valley, a decision we hope does change in the near future as a head lease operator would be a good outcome for the Perisher Range. We hope you like our cover photo, it is

amazing to see how much terrain we have on the Main Range away from the resorts. It is not just as easy as walking out and skiing it, you do need to have backcountry skills. This trip for Matt and Liz was a long all-day venture to get there and return. Stay tuned for back country stories in our next Spring Edition. For cycling fans, we hope you have noticed the great advertising we have been receiving via the Tour de France coverage. SBS have been sensational in promoting the L’Étape Australia race here in December. It is expected this year we will have over 5000 riders, plus Chris Froome will return as ambassador again to ride. PERISHER

No head lease for Perisher

THE NSW Government and Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) recently advised they have not granted any company a new head lease arrangement for Perisher Range in their recent Governance Review. The decision, which was not expected until October was released to Perisher, Perisher Chamber of Commerce and Perisher SLOPES who had entered a three way joint submission indicating they preferred a head lease option as the best way going forward. The media release from NPWS stated, “The Expression of Interest responses were evaluated for Perisher Range. On the advice of the tender panel the Government will not be offering a head lease to any proponent for Perisher Range at this time.” “A sustainable service delivery model for Perisher Range is important for the future of the resort. Government is investigating better cost recovery options for providing services at Perisher Range Resorts and will progress this in consultation with stakeholders.” Since that decision was handed down it is known that OEH (National Parks) and the joint submission parties have met on at least one occasion to discuss the decision. At this stage there are no facts coming out from meetings and no party would make any comment. It is thought that ongoing discussions could take place to see if an outcome could

◆ DEVELOPMENT: The entrance to Perisher and the proposed site of any future village, the carpark.

eventuate for a head lease to be granted. There is no confirmation of how many parties submitted an expression of interest for the head lease, but it is highly likely that only one, from Vail Resorts (Perisher) could have been submitted. Perisher, who have huge vested interests in the valley as the lift company would be the best operator of a head lease, but what price are they willing to pay and what are the NPWS expectations on this lease fee. That is a likely stumbling block at the moment. Perisher have the support of the Chamber of Commerce who deal with commercial

lodges and SLOPES who look after the 88 club lodges. A head lease model is what Thredbo currently have, where the lift company also run all aspects of the village and are effectively the landlord for all lodges and residences. In 2002, the Walker Report recommended that a head lease model was the best solution for the Perisher and Charlotte Pass areas. It appears that the Charlotte Pass head lease will be a separate case altogether, with NPWS offering a statement in the same document. In short, the statement said expressions of interest have been evaluated and direct negotiations will now commence. Lodge owners at Charlotte Pass can take waitlist bookings for 2018 with OEH anticipating a further announcement made by early snow season (assume 2017).

Future So where does that leave the OEH and Perisher now? OEH were the ones who initiated the Governance Review. The NSW Government said they “had a vision for the Perisher Range and Charlotte Pass Resorts to create a world-class tourism destination with year round visitor activities, that is financially sustainable and, given its location in Kosciuszko National Park, environmentally responsible.” OEH currently run the Perisher Range in its present capacity, where they are the

landlords and look after all the municipal services including the sewerage plant and waste collection plus operate the land of the Perisher car park. Perisher only own their lifts and a few main buildings and lease that land from National Parks. After consultation with all interested parties involved at Perisher it was agreed that the community wanted a head lease operation. The Perisher Range Master Plan has been on the drawing board for over two decades and still nothing has eventuated with any sings of development in the way of a village centre. Perisher resort would be the best option as it is doubtful that OEH are willing to develop Perisher Valley themselves. And would they be able to find a developer willing to invest tens of millions of dollars to create any type of village..? If you were to ask Perisher’s loyal legion of snow enthusiasts would they like to see Perisher hold a head lease and create a new village with added infrastructure we are sure the answer would be yes. It would be nice to see a village in our lifetime... You can see an extended article on this discussion on our website, www. snowymagazine.com.au

COOMA businesses are truly welcoming all snow visitors this season with a huge light display as an official greeting for the snow season. The main street has been lit up like a Christmas tree with colourful lights and shops also joining in the snow festivities. Once travellers reach Jindabyne they will see the Banjo Paterson Park trees also brightly decorated by lights. Red Energy have always supported the region and have sponsored the Cooma town and Jindabyne town lights as part of their community engagement commitment to the region. The Cooma light show has now run for two winters and with the amalgamation of the councils have extended the lights into Jindabyne this season. In the future they hope to extend the welcoming lights throughout more of the council region. The lights are designed to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for visitors to our region, encouraging them to stop in our towns. For local residents it makes our towns bright and fun during the cold grey winter months. The Cooma Chamber of Commerce have initiated a ‘Winter Starts Here’ campaign in conjunction with the Red Energy lights – where local businesses have been encouraged to light up and dress their shop windows with a winter/snowman theme.

Over 20 businesses have joined the campaign with windows decorated with snow flakes and snowmen everywhere. It is a real feature and reason for families to stop and wander throughout the town. “We have had families come into the Cooma Visitor Centre asking about the lights and wanting to know all about them,” said Donna Smith, Snowy Monaro Regional Council Tourism Manager. “They love them, especially the kids spotting snowmen everywhere. We have received so much positive feedback about the lights and the flashing snowmen in the Cooma roundabouts – people love them.” Cooma has a lot to offer the snow traveller, from the biggest snow shop in the Southern Hemisphere at Rhythm Snow Sports, to some great cafes and eateries on the main street. Be sure to stop at PD Murphys, The Lott Foodstore or Subway for a great meal. A stroll down the main street for shopping will see a vast selection of clothing and outdoor shops and you can also stock up on supplies before heading into the mountains. There is also a selection of great motels within Cooma and on the main road. Cooma Visitor Centre next to Centennial Park has a wealth of knowledge for all visitors, and can help you will all your information needs.

â—† GREET: Prime Minister Turnbull visited Cooma to talk about Snowy 2.0 updates PHOTOS: Steve Cuff

Snowy 2.0 drill testing By Steve Cuff PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Cooma in late June to be briefed on upcoming drilling tests as part of the feasibility study for the Snowy 2.0 project announced earlier in the year. Snowy 2.0 is a potential $2 billion expansion of the current Snowy Hydro Scheme, the Federal Government allocating $500,000 for the feasibility study to see if the project is viable. When talking about the vast scale and the underground components of such a large project, Mr Turnbull said, “This is building on the vision and the passion and the patriotism of the men and women that built the Snowy Mountains Scheme. “The feasibility study, all that work will be finished by December. So we are getting on the job. This is building, securing Australia’s energy future, our commitment is affordable reliable energy and meeting our emissions reduction commitments. And this scheme does all of that, this is a massive addition to Australia’s electricity security. While the Canberra press were more interested in Liberal party squabbling, for the Snowy Mountains region the project is vital to creating thousands of more jobs. Mr Turnbull first mingled with staff before addressing the group from Snowy Hydro and Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC). SMEC have relocated 40 staff back to Cooma to assist with the feasibility study. Snowy Hydro CEO Paul Broad further commented that the reason for the gathering was to highlight that they are de risking the project by drilling and testing core samples and rock. “The capital spend will change significantly based on what he find down at depth. We are getting more confident, obviously by the drilling we can take a lot of uncertainty about it on the capital cost, and the economic

modelling which we’ve started is looking promising, so yeah, we are very optimistic and are delighted to have the Prime Ministers support. “We need to have a much more accurate picture of the nature of the rock. The varying ability of rock types and the fault running through the middle makes it a bit of a challenge for us on the geology, so getting more certainty on that is the keystone, and today’s announcement is all about reducing risk.

Drilling Team When the drilling commences at Tantangara, John Mulligan, director of Mulligan Geotechnical from Khancoban will be continuing on a family tradition. “My father and the Grech brothers were part of Snowy drilling team in the early days, said John who was 14 at the time his father worked on the Snowy. Now it truly is a family affair business with John’s wife Jenny running the office in Khancoban, his daughter Megan running their Yamba office and both his son Sam and son in law Nick working on drilling teams. They have 15 rigs that they use throughout Australia drilling for hydro companies, including Snowy Hydro, and will be bringing four or five suitable rigs to the new Snowy 2.0 testing site at Tantangara Dam. When queried about his father’s days in the Snowy Scheme and did he actually realise at that young age how big the scheme was, he said, “No I didn’t really appreciate it (size) no, only in the latter years when I started drilling and moving around doing remedial works in the scheme. Having grown up in Khancoban and lived in Talbingo for a while, John and his team will start drilling in mid to late July. “We will be starting the drilling at Tantangara, I think the deepest (hole) is about 1100m and depending on the ground and how many water pressure tests that they want to do, it could be a month.

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2017 - 10

John said he liked the small town of Khancoban and it offered everything his family likes, including the outdoors, skiing and his fishing. “Yeah, keen fisherman, in fact Tantangara is my favourite fishing spot and that’s where we’re going first up, he said laughing. Asked if there would be a few rods strapped to the side of the drill he said jokingly, “There might be a couple of rods in there with us, for sure. “For this first initial stage we will be taking five guys in there, then we will trim it down once we get on the land holes and off the barge, and trim it back to three (people). His drilling team will be staying at Adaminaby during their stint.

â—† FAMILY: Khancoban driller John Mulligan, who also talked with Mr Turnbull will be heading up the drill team at Tantangara Dam.

Timing your stay up the mountain By THE SNOW GAUGE

AUGUST in the mountains invariably brings with it the best snow and conditions for the season. And with it, if you tend to organise your life on a week-to-week basis like me, the most headaches for finding somewhere to stay on short notice. Like many snow enthusiasts I watch the weather charts, balance out my work and family commitments and try to figure out a time to go when I am going to get the best conditions. Coming from Sydney that is easier said than done though, and that sweet spot

will often give me less than a week’s notice. At this point I am seeing locals wisely nodding their heads and telling me I may well have a snowball’s hope in Tathra of getting a decent place to stay. Experience largely gets me agreeing with you. So what’s the solution if I want to leave it late to book? Is there one? I’ve definitely noticed a big increase in listings in the region on Air BNB over the past few years but the bookings clearly thin right out the closer you get to the date. I also wonder what the impact increased usage of Air BNB has on the longer term rentals and those seeking seasonal accommodation in the area. An article earlier this year in the Denver Post didn’t paint the best of pictures with home owners or those with a room to let now frequently eschewing the regular model of say a 12 or 16-week

rental. As one woman who rents out a room in a Colorado ski town put it: “Why would I have someone paying $700 when I can make $2,200 to $3,000 a month?” (Clearly you can bump those figures up for the local market too!) I’ve raised it on my blog but perhaps the answer is a ‘pod’ or ‘capsule’ style accommodation in places like Jindabyne or perhaps even on-snow. Something that caters more for shorter rentals with less lead time. Sydney opened one in May and if you’re looking to the mountains for an example Whistler has the ‘Pangea Pod Hotel’, which I assume will be more winter-friendly, opening in 2018. I know there will be all kinds of council and bed-number hurdles to overcome but the more I think about it, the more I reckon someone could make a portable version work.

The pods are just that, and look like they could potentially be the kind of thing that is eminently transportable. If you could come up with a decent common/storage/ bathroom areas it’d be great. Imagine being able to move the whole set-up - from a season at the snow to summers in popular coastal areas. Or perhaps move them in shipping containers and have them at a popular ski resort in North America and double up for a season down under. Prices? Well, perhaps in the $40-70 range a night. So hopefully I’ve sewn the seed for a clever entrepreneur out there to run with this. In the meantime I may just have to break a lifetime habit and start planning more things in advance! ◆ STRETCH: Jindabyne Yoga Shala classes offer 20 classes per week.

Snow pampering By Gina Woodward NOT everyone comes to the mountains to ski and ride from first lift to last lift. For some it’s all about the balance – some snow action plus time for true relaxation, be it a massage, a treatment, a class, followed by a wine and book session by the fire of course. Those looking for a break need not look far given the range of options here including day spas, yoga classes, pilates and beauty salons. No matter what resort you are visiting, there is a treatment with your name on it so you can feel refreshed before you head home to reality. The Snowy Mountains is a hub for all

things wellness and we were fortunate to experience first-hand a one hour relaxation massage at Lake Crackenback Resort’s day spa. It’s the sense of arrival that makes all the difference when you grab some ‘me’ time. So it was very calming to walk into this peaceful and welcoming spa with stunning mountain views. With a roaring fire in the lounge area plus friendly staff, I knew I was in good hands from the start. Bree-anna was my therapist for this relaxing and effective treatment. Originally from Jindabyne, she brings with her five years’ experience in Accor Spas on the north coast, plus owned her own salon in

Want to use up some more energy or even create a little more? At Jindabyne Yoga Shala, under the supportive guidance of Jane Corben and her team of seven teachers, you will be immediately transported to a state of relaxation. Post working in the mountain bike space at Thredbo, Jane founded Yoga Shala in 2014 and offers classes for all levels including Hatha, Restorative, Yin and Vinyasa Flow. Helping winter sports enthusiasts to stay in shape and balance, there are alignment focused classes, après flow and stretch, plus private sessions in this beautiful and convenient location. Sun streams into the studio on a winter’s morning allowing yogis to connect with themselves and create good energy within. Jane recently returned from Bali where she completed another yoga qualification in traditional hatha yoga, getting back to the premise of true yoga focusing on breath work and spinal activation. On the schedule are 20 classes per week and Jane said, “It’s really popular with visitors and many Sydney clients have remarked it’s the nicest studio they’ve been in.”

◆ TALENT: Andrew “Grassi” Kelaher hard at work and one of his recent Lego sculptures.

Snow sculpture art By Steve Cuff EVER wondered where snow sculptures at the resorts come from. Here is an insight to the snow sculpture man himself. Andrew Kellahar, known usually by his popular nickname ‘Grassi’ is a talented artist. He has shown great promise since a young child and now has paintings hanging in many galleries across the world. “I actually started painting as a kid, probably about four or five, I could just do it,” said Grassi earlier this winter. “My mum and aunty bought me oil paints when I was about five or six, I started oil painting and my first ever painting I can remember it because I got in trouble. I did a portrait of Gene Simmons from Kiss and my dad got angry and threw it out because he reckoned I wasted the oil paint as it was expensive. “So I started painting landscapes to make my old man happy, and my mum entered them into the Easter Show. I used to get them exhibited and they thought I was an adult, but I was younger than thirteen.”

He gave up for a while and did not pick up a brush in anger until about 19 years of age. Now his paintings are well in demand and is often commissioned for work. Here in the mountains what you see are his snow masterpieces. Courtesy of a shovel and with the assistance of a snowcat and mound of snow, Grassi designs and then creates certain promotional signage and logos, depending on what the resorts may be promoting that particular week or month. They are simply remarkable, and to think you can sketch on a piece of paper and then use only a shovel to finish with such great detail and a superb end result. The snow beginning was in the late 90s where Grassi started as a lift operator at Blue Cow for three seasons. He started to make sculptures, his first major one being a huge reptile launching out of the snow adjacent to the Terminal Chair. Lift operator soon delved into part time lifty, and mostly sculpting. Perisher soon realised they were onto something and Grassi became a full time sculptor, with

◆ STYLE: Grassi’s landscape paintings are very much his own style.

creations popping up all over the place. Through a leading art gallery in Sydney, his painting became more in demand and Grassi opted to have a winter off and concentrated on his art. Wife Linda also did the maths and figured it was more viable to stay at home and paint, as well as drop the kids, Kai and Jay at school and pick them up. There might have also been some surfing in between as well. Thredbo then approached Grassi to create exclusively for them for a few years, but now with resorts knowing what promotions they have well in advance, he switches between both resorts and is booked quite solid during winter. Grassi met wife Linda in the snow, and now the family all go skiing as a holiday which does on occasions incorporate some sculpting. For guests who are sliding around the resort it is a welcome surprise to stumble across Grassi’s work. Kids are hugely excited and the creations often have a seat or some way in which you can interact with the sculpture and have a

photo taken. Naturally the corporations receive huge exposure from these sculptures, with social media helping expand their products. Grassi said it takes him varying times to build. “Normally it is two hours in the night, then a full day and that is a small one. A bigger one would be two and half days, and that includes colouring.” Food dye is used to finish off the sculpture, mixing colour just like he would his paints. One thing is for sure, there is a lot of talent that goes into both forms of his art. In his paintings Grassi also incorporates a subtle naked lady into his paintings in what started out as a joke with friends “I had a show and we were giggling about the naked lady, and a buyer thought it was fantastic, and started running around to other paintings looking for it. From that exhibition it is a trade mark.” You can see various sculptures on the snow this winter, and visit his website to see more of his previous sculptures and paintings. www.grassi.com.au

On your way to the snow? Take the time to visit Berridale.

Berridale marching forward By Steve Cuff WHILE it may be a smaller town on the way through to the snow for many, Berridale is in the midst of a mini boom. With some new and enthusiastic businesses now in operation, real estate prices increasing, and a great vibe among the residents, it is about time that instead of driving through you stop and take a wander. In between big sister Cooma and big brother Jindabyne, Berridale is now emerging out of the shadow of its bigger siblings and has more to offer than most people would think. Not only is it a great place to bring up a family with affordable house prices, there is a thriving smaller business community who are all riding off the back of each other. As well as catering to the many tourists who stop year round - as the town has started to grow, residents have also become a big driver of increased business.

◆ BOOM: Berridale business owners are striding ahead and enjoying life in Berridale.

Berridale has a selection of accommodation options, two ski hires, car rental, a winery cellar door, gift and clothes shops, wellness and physio services, a thriving café scene and art and craft shops that all make for an ideal outing. Annie O’Keefe has owned the Post Office for four years and said they have actually seen a jump in buying and renting properties in Berridale through the increase of mail coming through their business. “It’s in a fantastic place, I think this is the most exciting time we’ve had in Berridale for about five or six years. There’s a real enthusiasm from business owners and residents,” said Annie. “We can actually see that people are wanting to now live here and stay here and enjoying the benefits of a small community.” That sentiment was echoed from many of other businesses and residents Snowy Mountains Magazine spoke to. They

have all seen an increase in activity and strongly believe it is a 12 month of the year destination and a really affordable base for families wanting to have a cheaper snow holiday. There is an abundance of traffic that passes through the town annually and especially during winter. Joe Zammit from the Berridale Inn was asked about the busy traffic and responded cheekily. “We need a big roundabout with a sign saying detour into the pub,” said Joe. The snow traveller does always seem to be in a hurry to arrive at or depart from the snow. So there needs to be attractions for them to stop. Berridale offers them more than enough reasons, and with an abundance of parking, a great café and bakery for food, plus many gift shops, Pauline Coxon’s art gallery and Ray Killen’s photo gallery, it is all worthy of a browse. Sue Broder has run ‘Unique Bootique’ shop

for four years, and said since she had moved to the lower part of town there has been an increase in visitation for her business. Sue is also a passionate Berridale advocate saying, “I don’t think I would live anywhere else.” All agree it is an ideal size town to bring up a family and real estate has been vibrant with Snowy River Real Estate specialising in Berridale properties. Lee Poulton who operates Stone Cottage Berridale upstairs above the Whisk and Cocoa café, said there has been a big boom in selling houses and units. “More people have moved into the area, there’s more families, so there’s more people milling around and with new ideas. I think it is surging ahead a little bit.” Talking with visitors Nina and Rob who were shopping in Stone Cottage, they indicated having been snow lovers all their life and have only for the first time this season stopped in Berridale.

The series continues on August 9 with their d’Arenburg dinner hosted by winemaker Jack Walton in Segreto. Kareela is a popular lunch venue and this event is sure to be in demand. Segreto is again the venue for the Deviation Road dinner hosted by winemakers Hamish and Kate Laurie. Jock suggest his style of music is “Whatever I can remember, ranging from Dire Straits, Pearl Jam, cover originals or Bruce Springstein, Fleetwood Mac, whatever is a great song.” Jock will also play any requests and loves the Candlelight. “It’s got a great sound, great venue, great view, it’s really comfy, a lovely fire, super couches and excellent beer.” Be sure to ask for the ‘Jock-y Hour’ super specials on Maisel’s Weisse German beers, a great beer after a day in the alpine. Traditional Alpine Lodge - In the Heart of Thredbo Village

Thredbo 60 Anniversary th

CELEBRATIONS have been well under way this season for Thredbo’s 60th year. A new book by Chas Keys has been released to mark the occasion, which was officially launched in Sydney in late June. Actress Marta Dusseldorp, granddaughter of one of Thredbo’s pioneers, Dick Dusseldorp officiated at the ceremony. The Thredbo launch was held in late July in a packed mid-winter dinner for 140 people organised by the Thredbo Historical Society. We will have pictures from this later event next edition, but on the night two more ‘Faces of Thredbo’ were inducted into the Thredbo Hall of Fame, Rudi Schatzle and Evelyn Mitchell. Rudi Schätzle is one of the famed entrepreneurs and business people of Thredbo. He began life there during the very early 1960s, shortly after arriving from his native Germany where he had developed skills in joinery and wood crafting. In Thredbo he worked initially in ski hire and then in the development of ski runs, felling trees by hand to fashion the Little Beauty and International runs and others of the early trails. Later, he cut the lift line for the Merritts chair and was also involved in the construction of the facilities at the top of

the mountain at Eagles Nest. Before long he discovered that his niche in the mountains was in food and beverage for hungry, thirsty skiers. With his wife Christine at one stage operated all of the refreshment outlets on the slopes, providing a vital and essential service demanded by skiers. Between them the pair ran the restaurants and kiosks at Eagles Nest, Kareela and Merritts as well as smaller facilities they established next to the Basin T-Bar, Middle Station and at the bottom of the Crackenback run. In the village itself Rudi also held the lease on Bursills lodge (now The Denman), which it is said he ran like a well-oiled machine during the 1970s and 1980s. All Rudi’s business ventures were successes, and in all, the family was involved in Thredbo for forty years including daughter Sonja opening Sante in the Village Square. Elyne Mitchell’s love of skiing and the Snowy Mountains began shortly after her husband, Tom Mitchell taught her to ski soon after their marriage in 1935. They lived on the Mitchell family cattle station ‘Towong Hill’ near Corryong. One of her earliest ski experiences in 1936

Take Pleasure...

was to ascend on horseback and skis, the western face of the Main Range, starting at the Geehi and finishing at Charlotte Pass – a formidable challenge for a novice skier. In 1936 at Mt Ruapehu New Zealand she won her first international ski race and in Banff in 1938 Elyne won the Canadian Downhill Skiing Championship. She was the first woman to descend on skis, the entire western face of the Main Range in 1941 and in 1948 Tom and Elyne managed to drive a motor vehicle from their Towong Hill property, up over the Main Range to Charlotte Pass. This was before the Alpine Way was built and the journey of 122 kilometres took five days. Elyne wrote the ‘Australia’s Alps’ which went to print in 1942 and in the book she noted that “The valley of the Crackenback below Dead Horse Gap is one of the few places in our hills where a small alpine village would not be incongruous.” During her life, she was to write 36 books including the Silver Brumby series and other fictitious works also set in the Snowy Mountains around the Thredbo valley and the Cascade Hut. Her last major work was ‘A vision for the Snowy Mountains’ printed in 1988.

Top to bottom weekend après party When it comes to iconic events mixed with the biggest après parties of the season, Thredbo has all bases loaded and ready to hit the home run with the Thredbo Top2Bottom weekend on August 11-13. But you don’t need to wait for Saturday to fire up your party scene, the action will be hot at Thredbo Alpine Hotel’s poolside from Friday August 11 where the GH Mumm après frivolities begin the weekend long party. On Saturday, the competitors may well have their eye on the early morning

Supertrail for the Top2Bottom race, but the VIP party crowd will be awakening for an early morning champagne breakfast on the Kareela deck. Here they will watch as the racers whizz by and the fizz flows from cork popping bottles of bubbly. This is the scene for Australia’s most iconic snow race and Thredbo will be putting on a weekend long party starting on the Friday in the weekend of all weekends. The race is open to all and competitors ride the chair as the sunrise peaks over the

horizon, before the serious racers turn on the afterburners on the mighty Supertrail, and the enthusiasts compete for their own personal pride. Running 100m to start before clicking into your skis or snowboards, the race tests even the best of them as thighs start to burn well before the crowd lined finish at the bottom of the Kosciuszko Express. The winners will have the joy of spraying the bubbly, but they will be behind the Kareela deck crew who will have started their party a lot earlier. After the race the attention again draws on poolside where there will be more GH Mumm flowing for the after party on Saturday afternoon from 2pm. There are a handful of Australia’s hottest artists taking the Thredbo party vibes to

the next level, including Jess Porsches who has taken time off touring around the globe and headlining both the parties with his mega hits such as ‘Horses’. Supporting Jesse will be Elizabeth Rose who was recently named one of the ‘Top 20 Aussie Indie Bands to Watch’. KLP will also be in attendance across the weekend, known for her own solo music and co-writing she’ll sure bring a unique vibe to the party. MOZA and Commandeur are the final acts to feature during this year’s Top to Bottom weekend and are both at the forefront of the Australian music scene, crafting a name for themselves as the guys who always bring the party to life, they’ll be a definite highlight to not miss. First Base goes après at Thredbo THREDBO have started their 60th anniversary celebrations with a bang in early July, with their First Base retro vintage poolside après party starting the season off in fine boogie 60s ‘style’. Hosted by DJs Danny Clayton and Tom Tilley, and featuring the legendary Hayden James, the mosh pit was alive with retro clad partygoers that danced to crazy beats and styled up some classic retro outfits. Fluro onesies are back as are some of your favourite grandmas’ old school sweaters, and don’t forget the headbands and Bogner puffer jackets straight from Vinnie’s boutique to poolside at Thredbo. After gracing the slopes in aforementioned vintage getup, revellers partied and frolicked between the fire pits and hard into the night as spectacular fireworks lit up the night sky. In true 60s style, some even rocked the classic ski boot on the dance floor routines made famous back in the Thredbo day that defined many a party scene. Hayden James – fresh from the US where he was writing a song for Katy Perry’s new album (#namedrop) really got the night pumping, dropping the beat all the way down to first base. Highlights from the night including Danny Clayton’s crowd

surf and what’s a Thredbo snow party without a shoey? A Thredbo party would not be the same without a few select moves on stage plus a poolside Jacuzzi, knowing full well it was a freezing dash through the throng to reach the comfort of warmth in the hotel. Remembering the old ad campaign, what happens in Thredbo stays in Thredbo may well be the theme of this 2017 winter season as more après parties are set to rock poolside in the coming months. First Base July was a night to remember but don’t’ despair if your missed this epic party, Thredbo will be hosting two more 60s après poolside celebrations. Make sure you get your retro gear out and come to First Base on August 5 and again on September 9 at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel. Next up they have Hugo Gruzman and Tom Tilley back on the decks, featuring Confidence Man, arguably the hottest act currently on the Australian music scene. To wrap up the three part series they have the epic Luke Million… and what’s more, it’s all FREE! So dust off that onesie and grow out your mullet because it’s time to #ShareTheStoke.

chair at the top of Thredbo. While there are some of the best riders in the world, the task is still very demanding and on occasions dish up some spectacular crashes as all riders push it to the limits. The competition side of the event consists of a big air session for both skiers and snowboarders followed by a newly introduced challenge, The GoPro Team Challenge. Each randomly drawn team of pro skiers and snowboarders will be handed a bag of GoPro cameras and mounts with 24 hours to session the jump to their heart’s content and upload a 60 second clip. All the clips will be published online and then it’s up to the public to vote for their favourite clip, ultimately deciding the One Hit Wonder GoPro Challenge winners. The week is also one long party and everyone invited to join in the festivities. Thredbo is hosting some huge live concerts and entertainment to accompany the high flying action,

and you can mingle with the athletes at all these events. Get ready to howl as the famous Keller Bar will host a full moon party on Wednesday 6 for all guests and athletes. Once the high flyers have finished their acrobatics and competition on Saturday 9, poolside will become be the hottest ticket in town before party goers converge on the Village Square. First Base is putting on a party at Poolside and afternoon après with help from Hugo Gruzman (Flight Facilities), Tom Tilley (Triple J) and Luke Million as they play sweet tunes into the night. Following on from First Base at 6pm is the final Heineken Village Concert Series, make sure you save some energy for this one, as Strange Associates, Panama and Winston Surfshit take over the village for some spring après celebrations. Fond memories for Kurt Brandauer FOR long time visitors to Thredbo and particularly the Black Bear Inn, they may well remember former owner and fun loving Austrian Kurt Brandauer. As we mentioned briefly last month, Kurt passed away early in the winter and a service was held in the Thredbo Chapel in June where a long list of Kurt’s many friends and his family attended. Everyone had a tale of how they first met Kurt, often over an ale at the bar but not one bad word could be found. His wife Marita, daughters Anneliese and Giddy along with many others shed tears as they remembered

all the good times they had with Kurt. There were numerous kind words said in his eulogy by Bindi Reitstatter and Peter ‘Noddy’ McDonald and stories of how Kurt arrived in Australia, eventually making his way to Thredbo. Kurt’s love of a good time, his love of Thredbo and the Black Bear Inn were legendary and his generosity towards all of his family and friends were all reminisced during the afternoon. The Black Bear bar and restaurant where Kurt cooked and served drinks was full to capacity and he would have been especially

proud of this great send off. Leo Presslaber played Austrian music on his accordion and to relive old times, a rendition of the slap dance was performed by Klaus Riepler, Rupert Winker, Thomas Reitstatter and Brad Spalding. There was traditional costumes of dirndl for the ladies and lederhosen for the men and the afternoon was a celebration of a great life. We are sure there will many more toasts this winter for Kurt at the Black Bear Inn. He was loved by all who had crossed his likable path in an eventful but too short a life. ◆ LEGEND: Kurt Brandauer brought joy to many Thredbo visitors.

Black Bear Inn

Bernti’s

Ph 6457 6216

Ph 6457 6332

The downstairs restaurant at Candlelight is a hidden gem, and once visited will be on your lifetime radar. With a cosy atmosphere it is open to both public and in house guests. One of the house favourites is braised lamb shoulder with roast vegetable purees, baby carrot herb crumb and smoked yogurt. For a desert one of their signature dishes is any one of the adults only ice cream. Chocolate ice cream topped with violet crumble and butterscotch or toffee cream schnapps is just one of the treats. With superb views to the mountain and a quaint cosy bar with fireplace, a visit is recommended this winter.

Dining at the Black Bear is a ritual for many Thredbo visitors, and with friendly service and superb food it is easy to see why. Start with a refreshing drink at the bar before sampling a few favourite dishes. The seared scallops for entrée with blackened eggplant puree, spiced pumpkin chips and parmesan foam is delicious and for main the rosemary and juniper cured succulent rack of lamb is mandatory. Either of these mains, eye fillet or New York steak, pork cutlet or the twice cooked duck leg with ricotta gnocchi, wilted greens and orange jus will suffice as will the peach melba panacotta for desert.

Bernti’s have a few changes for you this winter, with the new upstairs Zack’s Grill and revamped Brasserie Bar. At Zack’s Grill the South Coast oysters are delicious for an entrée and are offered in five different styles. The pork belly or scallop ceviche should tempt you and for main course the pan fried gnocchi or Eden mussels will delight. For something more substantial share Zack’s Tomahawk Rib Eye steak, a 1.2kg fine Diamantina Black Angus renowned for its excellent eating and quality marbling. Choose from many fine wines to accompany your meal and finish your evening with an ale in the bar.

The Terrace Restaurant at The Denman offers a relaxed dining experience with delicious food and unlimited views to the mountain. There are many guests who are partial to the succulent Monaro lamb cutlets that have been prepared and cooked to perfection. Sliced from a 12 hour slow roasted lamb shoulder pithivier, with petite winter vegetables and red wine jus it is divine. One of the favourite deserts is without a doubt the apfelschmarrn of chopped pancake with shredded apple, cranberry compote and vanilla bean ice cream. For a lively drink visit the Après bar downstairs or their new relaxing library bar for pre-dinner drinks.

At the top of the Kosciuszko chair you will find Eagles Nest with 270 degree views of the mountain. With two choices of eateries from a quick and easy stop at the Bullwheel bistro or upstairs Eagles Nest, you have all bases covered. For breakfast the poached eggs on sourdough with additional options of mushrooms and salmon is recommended. There are great snacks and cakes for coffee stops and for lunch the vegetarian or chicken quesadilla are delicious. The Kosci hot pot, a hearty and spicy stew with tender beef and slow stewed vegetables served with crusty bread is ideal for a cold winter day.

Executive chef Kane Stamp has created an exquisite menu this winter at Cascades. For starters try freshly shucked Merimubla South Coast oysters, seared scallops in almond citrus pangitat and local horseradish or Eden mussels ‘provencal’. The Lake Eucumbene rainbow trout with green beans and miso caramel is a fine local dish or the Amelia Park classic lamb rack with stinging nettle and mint salsa verde will melt in your mouth. For desert the rhubarb crumble with blackcurrant, vanilla, hazlenuts and vanilla ice cream will complete your evening. You can also dine at Segreto for a more intimate evening, and look for the wine and dine series dinners.

The Local Pub

With a menu revamp, the Local Pub at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel is ideal for a light meal or more casual dining. For a snack with drinks order nachos grande or the wedges with sweet chilli sauce. The 300g Riverine scotch fillet grain fed steak or the New York cut both come with fries, slow cooked tomatoes and corn. With a full bar of different drinks you will find an ale or wine to suit, and for classic meals you have choices of chicken parmigiana, always a skiers favourite or the braised lamb shanks with creamy potato, baby vegetables and cab sav jus.

Merritts Mountain House

Skier and snowboarders love the Cruiser chair area of Thredbo, and you are in luck with one of the best eateries, Merritts Mountain House. On a fine sunny day enjoy the outside alfresco dining and watch the world of snow lovers schuss the slopes. Refuel with a big selection of European and modern favourites including lamb shanks, European Bratwurst, Austrian goulash, winter warmer bread bowls and a big selection of fresh salads, wraps, pastries and house-made cakes and slices. Keep the European feeling rolling with a stein of beer or Schnapps from the bar and indulge with a hot gluhwein or famous hot chocolates.

7 Tips for the Interschools Championships NSW Interschools had their biggest Travelplan Ski Northern NSW and QLD Interschools Snowsports Championships and Sydney Championships in July with combined entries of 4,925 from 2,261 school students from 262 schools. NSW students will now head to the Subaru NSW State Championships in August at Perisher. The Subaru ACT-Southern NSW Interschools Snowpsorts Championships will be held in Perisher July 26-28 and big event entry numbers are also expected. ACT and QLD students have qualified straight to the Australian Championships at Mt Buller in September. Whether this is your first time competing this season in Interschools, or whether you have been around for longer, the tips for the Interschools Championships are relevant to all participants, team mangers and families. 1. Have Fun. Be on time. Enjoy the event, help everyone else enjoy the event too... Interschools is important, but keep things in perspective and enjoy the day. Be a good sport. Most of the people on course are volunteers, so smile and say thanks. Allow extra time to get to your courses, as there may be queues, bad weather conditions and location changes. 2. Parents: the most important things you can do…

Only one participant will be fastest, maybe not yours. Praise effort and participation, rather than winning or losing. Define success with your child, which is achievable with effort, such as finishing without falling, beating a mate, having fun, or achieving a medal if capable. Help them prepare with calm, positive encouragement. Remind them to race like they practiced and stay in control. Avoid yapping about the course being icy or rutted as this could work others into a frenzy and stress the participants. The course is what it is. Instead, help your racer calmly prepare and keep perspective of what they can control. 3. Competitors: Perform a thorough course inspection… Slowly slip the course. This is not a practice run so stop regularly looking at the terrain and sequences of gates. Think about how you’ll approach your run. Look for and remember tricky gates and key features. Slip early and watch the time. Plan for plenty of time to get back through queues, and calmly warm up. ̘ 4. Prepare before your run: before your number is called to line up, stop idle chat and find some space 1. Check your equipment. 2. Stretch. Warm up. Breathe.

Do what helps you calmly focus, not what makes you stressed. ̘ Run through the course in your mind, rehearse key sections from inspection and think positive: mindset matters. If you are late, don’t panic or rush: prepare with these steps, and ask an official politely when you can start. ̘ 5. If you want to finish first, you first have to finish. Stay upright. Stay in control. Race it like you practiced, look ahead, remember key features and stay in control. Cars can’t go full speed around tight corners: neither can you. Stay in control. Course conditions do change during racing: ruts form, snow builds up. Look ahead. Stay in control. 6. Problems on the course. If you think you missed a gate… BOTH feet must pass between each gate and near side of the course (the ‘Gate Line’)

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2017 - 28

one or more times. If you walk back to a gate, you need only pass the ‘gate line’ (don’t need to go right around the gate). You may ask the gate judge if you have correctly passed the gate. If you are obstructed or think you need a rerun, stop! Report to nearest gate judge then finish referee. DO NOT FINISH: if you finish, you will not get a re-run. Falling and finishing - the best racers fall too. Get back up and keep going. Your team needs your finish time to get a result. If you fall at or after the last gate, you may finish without your skis/snowboard/poles. If you fall anywhere else, you must put on your skis/ snowboard/poles back on before continuing. 7. If there is a problem… Take time to cool off if you’re mad before talking to anyone. Ask your team manager to talk respectfully to the appropriate official. Respect their decision.

On the XC trail CROSS country skiing is a popular sport for not only enthusiast XC skiers, but for recreational visitors and those keen to learn more about the sport. One of the beauties of the sport is once you have your basic gear, cross country skiing is free with kilometres of terrain to explore. Perisher Cross Country trails are as good as anywhere in the world and 2017 promises to be another busy year at the Perisher XC Centre. During the course of the season the centre hosts approximately 30 different events you can participate in, or just go for a leisurely skate with friends. Apart from fun skiing competitions and championship races, there are many events and classes you can take to both get you started, help fine tune your technique and just have fun in the outdoors. Once you are able to manoeuvre your skis confidently, there is a wealth of scenery to behold once out on the trails. The Perisher XC Centre is located behind the Man from Snowy River Hotel and they can help you out getting started or steering you in the right direction. K7 Adventures have the most experienced cross country instructors that can offer lessons on beginner terrain and show you all aspects of cross country skiing. Additionally they have intermediate and advanced classes and

dedicated seasonal programs. Jane Scheer’s Jindy Faster Masters programs offer season long novice and intermediate classes similar to alpine skiing, where each week you have the same instructor and can build on your skills during the season. You can contact Jane at jane.scheer.js@gmail.com The Fast and Female classes on August 5 offer dedicated women’s lessons on how to be more efficient and faster on your skis with the experienced Brooke Darlington. The day starts at 9am and you can contact Brooke at fastandfemaleaus@ gmail.com Cross Country Ski Week is a nine day XC festival from August 5-13 that has now been running for 50 years. This week is great for skiers of all standards with plenty of social events, coffee tours, fun competitions, fun raising events and tour races to test your skills and fitness. The Mystery Coffee tours are on again Tuesday 8 and Friday 11 and after the Saturday 12 Snowy Mountains Classic event, there is a presentation where all you have to do is take part in an event or several during the week to have a chance of winning great prizes. The NSW Ski-O Champs on Sunday 13 is an event worth promoting on its own. Here you can participate in ski orienteering with a distance and level of

difficulty catering for all levels of skier/ orienteer. Contact Maina Iskhakova direct on 0412 308 310 to find out more. On August 24 the NSW Interschools Champs will see 100’s of juniors from schools all over compete with some enjoying their first time experience. To be involved in this event contact Peter Ward on 0409 338 978. Come September, the Snowy Mountains Nordic Family Cup is a fun day for all the family run by Jindabyne’s own Nordic club. They would love to see new participants and everyone is invited to join the event.

To find out about all the other events being held at Perisher or Charlotte Pass visit the www. perisherxcountry.org website, click on “Events” and then “Local Events Calendar”. PERISHER

Top juniors for FreeRide A SELECTION of the best junior skiers and snowboarders will converge on Perisher for this year’s Australian Junior FreeRide Championships on August 11-13. Regarded as the pinnacle event for aspiring juniors, they will take to the Perisher parks for a hotly contested competition format. Celebrating its 10th anniversary since inception at Perisher in 2007, the competition is open to all junior athletes and will attract a large field in ages ranging from six to 18 years age. The event will be contested over three consecutive days in Perisher Playstation Parks, including the Front Valley slopestyle park, Playstation halfpipe and Playstation Sun Valley rider cross course. Up to 200 competitors line up to compete across the various age categories, being Mini-Groms (6-10yrs), Groms (11-14yrs) and Rookies (15-18yrs). In previous years, competitors have come from local areas, throughout NSW, interstate and from overseas including Korea, Japan, Austria and the USA. Skiers and snowboarders will each have the chance to be crowned Australian champion in their respective discipline by Ski and Snowboard Australia.

A household of athlete names have come through this series and gone to achieve great results on a global scale including Scotty James, Nate Johnstone, Josh Vagne, Alex Brookes, Cam Waddell and Luke Staveley to name a few. In this year’s event, spectators should look out for the talents of upcoming juniors such as last year’s series winner (in his age group), 12 year old Valentino Guseli who this summer placed 2nd in the US Open and is currently the US National Champion. Ripcurl team rider Oskar Schulz and Joey Ellis are also in the mix. Sixteen year old Tess Coady who won this event last year became the first Australian snowboarder to ever win a junior world championship in April. Coady is also a current Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) Park and Pipe scholarship holder and won rising star at the recent SSA snow athlete awards. Testament to the growth of the freeride movement in skiing, three years ago the event was expanded beyond snowboarding only to include ski events. Originally starting as the Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage, it then became the Australian Junior series, an initiative of the Northern Snowboard committee.

PERISHER

◆ FIRST: Making your first snowman can be exciting. PHOTOS courtesy of Perisher.

◆ BLAST: See fireworks on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

◆ SLIDE: Have fun riding a toboggan or tube town.

Snow play is fun for all ages A SNOW experience can be full of firsts – be it a snowball, a snowman or a snow angel. Whether it’s your first time visit to the snow, or you’ve been visiting since you were a little kid, snow memories stay with you forever. Snow play is fun for all ages at Perisher. Visitors to the snow, first timers or long timers, can enjoy a range of activities that will ensure their time at the snow is even more fun than one could dream of. Check out the action at TubeTown - buy a single or multiple tube ride pass, pick up your tube and ride to the top for a wild slide down the slope. Toboggans can be hired too so you can use the dedicated toboggan slope, the biggest in Australia. Visitors can easily walk over from the carpark or the Skitube station. Scenic chairlift rides are a great way to get to the top to enjoy the stunning views of the Snowy Mountains. Perisher’s Quad Express takes you to an altitude of just over 2000m about sea level. Take a break and grab an indulgent hot chocolate at mid-station on the way up. Did you know that Perisher is truly unique in that you can experience 360 views of nothing but snow covered mountains from

On-snow accommodation, award winning dining room, famous pub bar, cocktail lounge, open fireplaces, daily APRÉS live music and entertainment, gym, day spa and Perisher’s only undercover, onsite parking. the top? Discover this when you take a ride on the Skitube to Blue Cow from Bullocks Flat or Perisher Valley. Take a short walk in the snow to the Main Range lookout at the top of Blue Cow, where you’ll see the Australian Alps in all their glory. You’ll also get to spy on Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko at 2228m. There’s a helpful map to show what each mountain is and how high each is too. Fireworks go off on Tuesday and Saturdays in Perisher, plus Wednesday nights in Smiggin Holes. For something different, grab an exciting ride in a Snow Groomer (bookings are essential). This is an exciting way to learn about what happens at night and behind the scenes to preparing the slopes for skiers and boarders to enjoy each day. It’s true that the mountain never sleeps! Ever travelled in a tunnel through the mountains? Don’t forget that a ride on the Skitube is also pretty fun. It’s Australia’s highest train service (and most on-time ride too!). Kids should make sure they get the best seat in the house at the front of the train for a ride to remember. Make loads of snow memories and more at Perisher this season.

Skitube 30th Anniversary

By Jamie Kerr IN 1987 the Skitube commenced operation, and on Sunday July 26, at 5.55am, the first passenger carrying train driven by Georgina Burke departed Bullocks Flat, commencing services between Bullocks Flat and Perisher Valley. The Skitube changed the way many people travelled to the snow and also coincided with the opening of Mt Blue Cow in July 1987. During Blue Cow’s first season in 1987, access was originally by bus transfer through the tunnel from Perisher Valley to Blue Cow. The final stage of Skitube was complete in 1988 and the Blue Cow tunnel section opened on March 31, 1988. The Skitube rack and pinion underground alpine railway was conceived by Ken Bilston as a solution to traffic congestion and winter hazards on the Perisher road. They commenced building in October 1984 and started actual tunnelling in July 1985. The main tunnel is named the Bilston tunnel after Ken. The Skitube Terminal at Bullocks Flat located below the snow line eliminated many of the resort access problems in a growing snow industry by providing safe access to Perisher Valley via a short 10 minute train journey. Construction was well underway and timing was right to establish a team to take over the project on completion, to establish an operating

company, procedures, authority approvals and staffing. In September 1985 I arrived at the temporary North Sydney office set up in the Transfield building to be introduced to the business team who were all meeting for the first time. Original Skitube Management consisted of general manager Karl Bruner, operations, Jamie Kerr, finance Andrew McInerney, retail Paul Swire and marketing Jim Cleary. At that stage we were also setting up Mt Blue Cow Ski Resort as part of the Joint Venture arrangement with Skitube, and subsequently set up a company called Blue Tube Pty Ltd to jointly manage both businesses. Much was happening with the preparation of operating budgets, setting up all aspects of the proposed retail outlets, marketing, brochures and general operations and staffing. As there was no available expertise or experience in the country to draw on regarding rack railway system operations, with the assistance of the Rack Rail Consortium project manager Henry Mooser, I was sent to Switzerland to train with the Jungfrau railway management team. Much was gained observing the Swiss process: how they operated and addressed safety within the railway system, and integrating the operation with a ski resort. Time was also spent with Swiss Locomotive Machine Works (SLM) who provided the rack rail expertise plus Brown Boveri who supplied electrical equipment. We worked with Transmark, the

It was exciting and an amazing opportunity and to be involved in such a prestige project, especially as young engineer. Today over four million people have travelled on the Skitube and I am proud to acknowledge all those involved who enabled this historic event in the history of the Snowy Mountains.

consulting arm of British Rail to produce a set of approved operating and maintenance procedures, along with advice on safety and operating of Skitube. Transmark consultants also spent time in Jindabyne to assist in practical training. Leading up to opening we needed to source key staff and in early 1987 a search found four highly experienced managers in their respective fields. Grahame Linkenbagh was employed as senior train driver to recruit and manage train drivers and control the day to day movements of the trains. Bill Rolfs was our electrical supervisor who managed the maintenance of all electrical systems from trains to electronics, sub stations and buildings. Werner Jecklin was mechanical maintenance supervisor and managed the maintenance of trains, railway track and property and Wally Weston was appointed in charge of guest services and marketing. Following train commissioning and training, we had to demonstrate to all relevant authorities that we were competent to efficiently and safely operate the train for public use. This included many simulated emergency situations inside and outside the tunnel requiring evacuations. Final sign off by the authorities saw a historic event successfully commence operations.

To buy or hire gear IT is an age old debate and one many skiers and boarder might have during the season. Should you buy new skis and snowboard, or hire them for your week? There is no right or wrong answer and there are pros and cons for both. Buying new you naturally have your own gear and obviously a ski or snowboard that you like. You get the feel of your planks and understand how they respond to certain situations. There is a lot to be said for this, and if you factor in that you may only buy new equipment every 4-6 years, you know you are not up for that expense each year. Snowy Mountains Magazine often test new skis we have not tried before, and on occasions skis we have previously tried. It is best to try skis before you buy, so you know how they perform. In July we sampled a Stockli Laser AX 78, on recommendations from Swiss shop owner Fred. He had been raving about them and we can tell you, they lived up to all recommendations of a smooth ride with the highest performance. We then reverted back to the Kastle MX88 we purchased last year, a ski that also performs up to a high standard given the pilots ability. David Harrison from Lake Crackenback had suggested to try the Kastle LX 85, which while a slightly softer and lighter ski, was still torsionally stiff. Testing skis is the right way to go, but then you would have to decide what ski to buy, do you go 78 underfoot for the groomers, 88 for more all mountain or even bigger again for some powder days. You probably don’t want to buy more than one pair of skis. Other points you could consider is how many days you are actually on snow. If you are going to be riding all season or at least 10 to 15 days buying new is a great decision. The hire case covers some of these bases, and depending on the shop you hire from, there is the possibility to return one pair of skis if you don’t like then and try some different. You don’t want to ski on a ski you don’t like. If you know the snow pack is firm and no fresh snow forecast for your week, you

could just rent a pair of skis dedicated to the groomed runs, such as a 78 under foot. If you arrive at your resort and there is snow dumping for the seven days, you would ask the shop staff for fatter pair of skis like 90 or 95 under foot, or even more.

◆ HIRE: Alpine Sports’ Richie in the hire department.

◆ BRAND: Fred from Stockli with the Laser AX ski ◆ CHOOSING: Which Kastle ski suits you?

So although you are hiring, you do have possibly a few more choices than if you arrive with just one pair of skis. The other advantage of hiring especially for a beginner or intermediate, is the cost. Most hire places have similar prices, so paying $200 for five days is quite good. You could ski for five or six years and it would work out a similar cost to buying. At that time in the future there will be more advanced skis so each year hiring you are generally getting some of the latest skis. Alpine Sports (see ad adjacent page) have hire and new skis, as do Stockli shop in Jindabyne (see ad page 10) and Harros Snowsports at Lake Crackenback Resort (see ad page 29). The resorts all have new and hire gear as well, so there are many places to shop.

Après in August LET’S be honest here, if you are visiting the snow in August there is a fair chance you are just as partial to the après scene as you are the actual snow scene. And rightly so, after all you do need to enjoy yourself on your snow holiday. There are many ways to après your way through August, but we thought we could offer some suggestions with local Snowy Mountain products and traditional European après favourites. The macho male may prefer a few ales, but their wives and girlfriends are sure to like a nice white wine, or perhaps a glass hosting a few extra bubbles. There are no shortage of venues and music to accompany your après and you can see listings in our extensive gig guide on pages 50-51. On the mountain there are many favourite watering holes, so next time you step up to the bar, ask for one of these popular drinks. Kosciuszko Pale Ale, created by legendary brewer Chuck Hahn is the fifth most popular NSW beer. Chuck is a keen skier himself and part time Jindabyne resident and can often be found at the Banjo Paterson Inn brewing his ‘Kosi’ Pale Ale. At the Banjo you can sample the famous brew direct from the vat to the tap and even see the brewery downstairs from the Muster Bar. Lookout for the Kosciuszko Pale Ale poolside après party on August 19 at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel. Another favourite alpine beer is the German imported Maisel’s Weisse. When poured into its own dedicated beer glass, it certainly is a great sight for a thirsty snow enthusiast, on the mountain or in the bar. With a mix of wheat and barley malt, this favourite is a winter tradition on all slopes across the world. An après favourite for the ladies is champagne, or these days, sparking wine. A bottle of GH Mumm has never gone

astray in Thredbo and the sound of corks popping brings music to a skier’s ear. Perfect after you have conquered a double black run, or just had a super cruiser. Any excuse is ok. Glühwein has been warming up European winters for hundreds of years, and the Wildbrumby Distillery located on the Alpine Way serves its own signature recipe studded with winter spices and its own Pink Lady Apple schnapps. The Nürnberger Christkindles Glühwein from Germany will also warm the heart on those chilly blizzard days. The award winning Courabyra Wines from Tumbarumba are made from fine Snowy Mountains grapes. Lake Crackenback Resort are one of their stockists as are Thredbo Alpine Hotel and it can be found at Kareela Hutte and also Merritts Mountain House. Make sure you ask at your favourite bar for Courabyra or visit their cellar door if you venture west over the mountains. You will have noticed Shut the Gate cellar door at Berridale on your drive through, well they also have a good selection of all their fine wines spread across the mountain establishments. They have a great variety, either direct from their Clare Valley winery, plus use a selection of grapes from Tumbarumba as well. Try a Shut the Gate with dinner or any après occasion. Capital Brewing Co from Canberra are keen snow lovers and now have their beer stocked into Perisher resort outlets. You can now drink their Coast Ale on tap at Jax Chargrill and The Station Resort, plus find cans of Capital Brewing beers at Blue Cow, a great spot for après on the deck. In Jindabyne you will find Jindabyne Brewing, a new brewery this winter that also stock many favourite watering holes on the slopes. Their local beer has soon developed into one of the most popular and

has a true following in the mountains. You can visit the brewery on Nettin Circuit or look for their taps at the LJH, CBD, Eiger Chalet or Guthega Hotel, also one of the best lunch spots in the mountains. For cocktail lovers your bases are covered at the Cocina Mexican in the Town Centre Jindabyne. Con Poulos selects the best tequilas to use in their many creations, and their Agave upstairs bar with a cosy fireplace is a great après bar or for a predinner drink. Wildbrumby Distillery on the Alpine Way have the most famous schnapps in the mountains, and their brand new baked apple schnapps is also bringing a glow to

the cheeks of winter distillery visitors this season. While best known for their schnapps over the past few years, the distillery has been undergoing something of a ‘gin revolution’. They have recently won ‘Gold’ for their Rubus Patch gin at the Melbourne International Spirits Competition, on top of winning the classic gin award at last year’s competition. The distillery is also serving up a very schnappy twist on the classic Negroni cocktail, by blending the baked apple schnapps with Campari and its own award winning gin. They also have fine Paulaner beer on tap to complete your snow day.

Search for gold – PyeongChang By Steve Cuff AUSTRALIA will send one of their biggest and strongest teams to PyeongChang in February 2018. Overall the team exudes a mix of experience and youthful enthusiasm in all disciplines and have realistic chances for up to eight podiums in skiing and snowboarding. We have asked athletes their thoughts and aspirations and this edition we gaze into the crystal ball and look at our skiing prospects. In our Spring edition we preview snowboard potential medals. Olympic seasons are often gauged by previous success in World Championships. If that is the case we can expect to seriously contend for at least a gold medal in moguls after Britt Cox’s victory, Danielle Scott won silver in aerials and David Morris a bronze in aerials.

Moguls

◆ Mogul skier Matt Graham PHOTOS: Steve Cuff

Britt Cox first ventured onto the Winter Olympic stage as a fresh faced 15 year old in Vancouver 2010. She will return eight years later as the favourite to win gold after a huge breakthrough season in 2016-17. She has won gold at World Championships and the overall World Cup Crystal Globe and said it

was her best season to date. “I was really excited to finish the season ranked number one in World Cup standings as well as take the win at the World Championships. This definitely puts a target on my back going into next season, but that’s the position I want to be in and look forward to the challenge. “I understand that next season is a new season altogether and I will need to work hard over the coming months to continue to progress my skills to be the competitor I want to be next season.” Matt Graham was disappointed with his World Championships. He is currently ranked third and come next February if he has a steady lead up on the World Cup circuit watch him perform the runs of his life. “I always try to make a point to improve each season . My main focus in this Olympic campaign is focused on the process. This off-season I am working really hard to put myself in the best position going into the Games, and I am feeling confident with where I am currently at in comparison to past seasons. “Obviously, the Olympics are the focus this next season so everything is aimed at peaking in February. But, we still have seven more Olympic qualifying World Cup competitions in December and January, so

once we knock a few of those out of the way I will know where I stand. “To bring home a gold medal from Korea would be a dream come true, and I am trying to do everything I can to make that become a reality.” Brodie Summers has been improving each season in the men’s moguls, is currently ranked eighth and has been on the World Cup podium previously. The mogul team will train in Perisher starting in August and contest the Australian freestyle Mogul Championships later this month

Aerials The women’s aerial team have a tremendous record at the elite level. This games should be no different, we have a very strong team and all of the top girls have podiumed in World Cup. Former Olympic champion Lydia Lassila would like nothing more than to write one more glorious final chapter to her career by winning another medal. Still ranked number three and now competing as a mother, Lydia admits it’s tough to juggle family and aerial commitments. She now limits her training somewhat and takes less risk. “I think there’s a way to be able to have it all, and that’s what I am trying to balance at the moment.”

2018 Winter Olympics Samantha Wells is ranked 12 and has experienced the podium life. In the world of erails and its complexity, don’t discount her for a medal chance. David Morris has shown he has the mettle to reach those dizzy heights of the podium with silver in Sochi 2014. He has the ability to come from the clouds and perform for big events, as was the case where he secured a bronze medal at the World Championships in a season where other results were not his best. He is an outside chance of medal.

Skier Cross Our best hope of any medal in skier cross lies with Sami Kennedy-Sim and she has just finished her best season, including a podium. Sami said it was very exciting although a long time coming in her 80th World Cup start to get on the podium. “Not quite on the top, but close enough.” She will like to have a better Olympics than last time, and after showing speed she crashed out and was disappointed in her result and never got to enjoy it. “This time around ever since I left Sochi, my focus has been on embracing the fact I am already achieving the dreams that I wanted to as a little 12 year old ski racer out of Sport and Rec Jindabyne. You have got to make the most of it as it is not going to last forever.”

Slopestyle Russell Henshaw described the last Olympics as an interesting ordeal considering what he went through. “A year out from it I tore my right ACL and decided to ski without it to qualify, and then a week before the Olympics I tore my left ACL. Considering all of that I am really, really happy with my performance there, I was able to land a run and finish in the top ten.” This time around the 27 year old said he is fit and the main goal now was to not hurt himself. He is ranked eighth and said anyone in the top 20 can win on any given day. “I still feel like I am right up there with the best of them, I feel like I’ve got the tricks to get on the podium.” ◆ Mogul Britt Cox ready for next season

“I would love to win a medal and clearly it’s possible. If I do all the right things, play my cards right and jump well on the day which is the most important thing, it’s possible.” Danielle Scott has been working her way up the rankings, now sits at number two and is in the best form of her career. “My personal goals for South Korea are obviously to do my best but to also land on the podium. Claiming silver at the 2017 World Champs has definitely boosted my confidence so I hope to continue building on that performance. “Aerials is a very competitive discipline and especially when we have such a rich history in the sport. I definitely love a healthy competitive environment where we push each other to be better.” Laura Peel is ranked sixth, is a former 2015 World Champion and constantly competes for podiums every week. Last year she returned from injury but still had good results and said her ultimate goal in South Korea is to land on the podium. “Right now we’re still in the first half of summer training, so I’m focusing on dialling in all the basics. I’m confident that if I execute my best jumps in PyeongChang the podium is possible. I’m not sure if I’ll add anything new at this stage that decision will probably be made on the day.”

Red Door Ph 6457 1112 For early starters ready to hit the slopes, the aroma of the Red Door in house roasted coffee beans at their Town Centre café alone is a great start to the day. Whether you are eating in or take away try any of the great meals on the all-day menu. The bacon and egg toastie is a favourite as is the deluxe brekkie wrap with smoked ham, scrambled egg, red onion, cheese, mushroom, spinach, tomato and BBQ sauce. If on the run grab a take away coffee with choices of blends. For lunch the chicken avocado toasted focaccia is delicious and keep your eye on the specials board, particularly the salmon. The Rueben sandwich is fantastic and for a light snack their cakes and slices with a tasty cup of tea or fresh juice compliment your day on slopes.

The Premiere have new owners with Anita and George Nimmo, who were café managers for the past three years now finding themselves as owners of the business. Anita said everyone thought they were running the business anyway, as they were always the face behind the counter. Nothing will change and they will still be serving up their favourite delicious meals. We are known for our coffee and everyone comes back for our coffee said George. If you fancy eggs benedict then the Premiere is the place for you, as they serve the best in town and is one of their most popular dishes. You can find club chicken sandwiches and schnitzels or burgers and fries and if you desire a drink after you day skiing or with lunch they are licensed.

Tracing big air moves

By Adam Begg

WITH stadium big airs becoming more popular and the Air and Style tour becoming a fixture on the snowboard world tour calendar, should we try and create a more modern judging system to take some of the subjectivity out of the result. At the moment there is a panel of up to five judges with a head judge and we drop the top and bottom score to achieve the best outcome possible for an event. At the end of the day it is subjective and often very hard to get people to agree with the result. But what if we could take some of the guess work out of a big air? What if we could use technology to agree on a few factors of each jump? Could Trace be the answer to this dilemma? Trace is a small GPS sensor that attaches to your board and tracks your activity with incredible accuracy. It can track speed, airtime, and rotation. Just think of the implications of this for judging a

snowboard big air. Imagine being able to know exactly how far a rider jumped and how long they were in the air for. This means we can focus more on the execution of the trick. How long was the grab held and how did it look in the air will always be subjective. But this weighted with a tangible distance and airtime ranking can help to come up with a better fairer result. For a big air comp to be successful the jump needs to be big which enables riders to execute their biggest manoeuvres. Plus a big jump makes better viewing for spectators. The only problem is, the bigger the jump the harder for judges to see the whole thing. The better the view you have of the

take-off, airtime and landing limits how well you see the riders’ grabs and slight nuances in the air. Most big comps have a live feed which allows close up views of grabs, but you still need to judge it live and often due to live scoring and constraints you don’t get to watch the feed over and over. What if we used go pro with multiple angles and in one quick snapshot we were able to pull the angle we wanted. If you add Trace to the mix you could have the airtime, distance travelled and

rotation, or have documented they came up short so all you had to do was watch the trick and its execution. Earlier this year at Air and Style the top 5 riders all did backside triple cork 1440 mutes with one doing an Indy grab. On paper straight away if they were all executed cleanly the Indy wins as it is a point of difference and slightly harder. If they had exact airtime and how big the riders went, would the result have changed? Certainly the riders would not have a point to argue if it was a computer calculated result. It would give the judges a standpoint on how the winner was chosen rather than just “I liked that one more”. Could this be the future and a way to make everyone happy with the outcome of freestyle snowboarding competitions?

Summer in sight YES it’s still winter but summer is not far away now in the Snowy Mountains. For people who may not have visited after the snow melts, you are certainly missing out on a wonderful time of year in the alpine. You can hike on various high alpine trails with surrounding lakes and peaks, some even still holding onto pockets of winter snow plus witness the wild flowers blooming from December to February. Thredbo comes alive in summer for outdoor activities including the walk to the top of Australia and Mt Kosciuszko. Each year tens of thousands of hikers make the pilgrimage and follow the 6.5km manmade path from Eagles Nest Restaurant at the top of Thredbo to Mt Kosciuszko. Mountain biking has grown in leaps and bounds recently, and Thredbo have world class gravity trails from the top of the Kosciuszko Chairlift. Ride the Cannonball, Flow Trail or All Mountain Trail to the valley floor and then take the chair back up for more runs. Just like in winter only different equipment…. The Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) from Thredbo to Lake Crackenback is 17km of the best cross country trail you can find, and crossing back and forth over the Thredbo River. This trail is being extended and will eventually end up in Jindabyne. Then you will be able to ride from the

top of Thredbo on a mountain bike over 40km all the way to Jindabyne on one trail. Watch this space, there is a chance it could be finished at the end of this summer. Jindabyne has exceptional trails around the lake edge and you can find all maps and information at local bike shops and Sacred Ride in Jindabyne. Cooma have great trails at Mt Gladstone so ideal to stop on your way in or out of the mountains for a ride. Cycling now has a new meaning in the Snowies after last year’s inaugural L’Étape Australia race that attracted over 3500 riders. This year they expect over 5000 participants in December. The attraction of the event is riding on closed roads from Bullocks Flat, through Jindabyne, Berridale and Dalgety and then the shorter ride finishes in Jindabyne, and the main ride continuing to finish in Perisher. Plus Tour de France champion Chris Froome is returning as ambassador, so you could get to ride alongside the best cyclist in the world. While there are extensive activities, lakes and mountain trails to explore, the calendar is also full of great events every month. Attend the country race days at Adaminaby, Cooma and Tumut, plus there is plenty of rodeo action and town shows each summer.

◆ RIDE: Mountain biking is a big activity in the mountains, especially in summer.

On the western side of the mountains, Tumbarumba, Batlow and Tumut host a number of great events plus have many great sightseeing opportunities. The Tumbarumba Tastebuds on October 28-29 is ideal for a weekend away to visit cellar doors and some of the best gardens in Tumbarumba region. The event is a collaboration of the Tumbarumba and District Garden Club’s open gardens and flower show with the Tumbarumba Vignerons Association open cellar doors. The Garden Club will feature select gardens and a spectacular flower show and following one of the best grape harvests to date, Tumbarumba vignerons are excited to be part of this fantastic event again in 2017. Take the opportunity to meet and talk with the vignerons who produce awardwinning local wines and some of the cellar doors are open exclusively for this Tastebuds weekend. For more information follow them on Facebook – Tumbarumba Tastebuds. Tumbafest in February is a huge weekend for everyone in the region and make sure you visit the Batlow Ciderfest. This huge daylong May celebration offers the best apples in Australia and tastings of great local ciders. In Tumut they have Lanterns on the Lagoon this spring, plus the music festival Rock the Turf at the Tumut Race Club in January. Trout fishing is a great sport across the

region and you don’t need to be an expert. You can take lessons or hire a fishing guide and simply throw in a line. And the beauty of fishing is you can do it all year round in the lakes, and only in the rivers after the October long weekend. Lake Jindabyne is a popular fishing spot and our resident fishing guru Steve Williamson can help you out with all your fishing requirements.

SNOWY MONARO REGIONAL COUNCIL

Residents need to act this election ON September 9 the newly amalgamated Snowy Monaro Regional Council will go to the polling booths to elect a new council. In what may be a difficult situation or for some who may have a grudge or a personal issue with the new merged council version, now is not the time to dwell on past council boundaries or debate should we or should we not have merged. The region needs to unite together, elect the best possible people for the new 11 council positions and get on with the job of moving forward. In the past 12 months the council has been under the guidance of Dean Lynch as Administrator. Mr Lynch was also a former mayor of Cooma Monaro Shire Council, one of the councils to merge with Snowy River Shire and Bombala Shire. Under the administrator the amalgamated council has been ironing out all their teething problems, merging staff and updating systems to be able to present to the new councillors an easier path. The new council will have a $70m budget which is significant but on the same hand could see squabbling over where any money for future projects is distributed. This fact alone highlights the importance of ensuring you both vote for a decent candidate who wants to work for the region,

council weighted too much by another sector of the region. The region is very diverse, combining industry from logging, farming to tourism and everyone has different needs and expectations. Voting correctly can help your town achieve these expectations.

but also ensure your vote counts. It is only natural that each town would like their specific area to receive their fair share of future projects. It would be naive to think there would still not be some allegiances to former shires, so the more candidates can represent your area the better.

Staggering Statistics At the last 2012 elections across the three previous shires, there were a large number of votes that in the end did not register at all. The former Snowy River Shire showed that of the 4672 people eligible to vote, 22% did not bother to vote. That figure of 1039 people would be enough votes to ensure one candidate gets voted this time around. So please urge all friends and neighbours in all areas to make sure they vote.

Snowy Guide App:

Out of 7,138 people registered in Cooma Monaro Shire 20% or 1,421 people did not bother to vote. The percentage was smaller but still significant in Bombala at 17%. When you combine the informal votes average of 8% that is a staggering combined number of wasted votes. Another huge statistic from the 2011 Census shows there was a whopping 17% of people from Snowy River Shire who were not even enrolled, compared to 4% and 3% respectively from Cooma and Bombala. This may well be an indication of a younger transient generation who may not care for local politics, but one day they will be older and wiser and wish they had tried to make a difference. Mr Lynch also indicated that if residents don’t vote they run they risk of having the

Can you make a difference? Council is calling for candidates with a ‘can do’ attitude and regional focus to nominate in the upcoming September 9 Council elections. Nominations open July 31 and close August 9 at 12pm.

Members of the public can enrol as candidates for the upcoming elections from July 31 until 12 noon on August 9. In the past month council have held information nights across the region to present the different scenarios councillors can face, and informing them of their duties and what lies ahead. It is noted that there will be more travel for councils as they traverse this large region. These nights also revealed the workload of a councillor is beyond what most people would think. They sit on a number of various committees and will make decisions that will affect all residents in the area. Mr Lynch said that the size of the region is something councillors will need to get their head around and, “Whoever stands for council should be forward thinking, we can never go back. That is the attitude residents of the region should also embrace.

Candidates must nominate in person at Snowy Monaro Returning Office 88 Vale St, Cooma NSW. )RU IXUWKHU FDQGLGDWH LQIRUPDWLRQ SKRQH 6XH %XUNH

Party scene in August August presents a huge line-up of entertainment, so be in the mood to party as there is a venue with your name on it every night of the week. From one man bands to comedy routines stretching from Perisher, Jindabyne and Thredbo, the nightlife is pumping. For afternoon Perisher après chill out at Jax Chargrill on Front Valley as Jordan McRobbie and Jacinta Counihan rotate each week. Jacinta is a snow lover and wows her audiences with her acoustic guitar and heralded, powerful yet beautiful voice. The Man from Snowy River have live après music from 4-6pm each afternoon, so make sure you stop by for an afternoon snack and a few ales. Performing in August are Hazy, Hardcover Duo and Harvey Duo . Eiger Chalet have 4-6pm après live music and the Sundeck have comedy night every Tuesday, so head up for a few laughs, plus live music on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Jindabyne is the place for evening entertainment, so once you have dusted off the snowflakes head out on the town. The Banjo has all your gigs covered, Clancy’s Cocktail Bar has Jae Haydon playing live Wednesday night and Oli Statham most Friday nights. DJs pump out tunes in the nightclub and catch favourites DJ TA$K and DJ LT this month. The Bowlo have Jae Haydon live on Sunday night and Monday, for what could be Australia’s biggest chicken wing night. Lake Jindabyne Hotel have live music every Friday night and Brumby Bar live music Saturday nights. If you rate yourself on the vocals, open mic at Rydges is on every Tuesday, plus live music every Saturday evening and comedy laughs with dinner on Sunday. Thredbo is the home of après and poolside brings out the big guns in August with First Base on August 5 and music and DJs every day. Mark Travers rocks the Après Bar at the Denman from Friday to Monday and find more Thredbo entertainment on pages 18-21.

Snowtunes 2017 Back again this year and expanding its program over two days in September, Snowtunes 2017 is set to be one crazy big party with two stages. The festival’s tune component will be taken care of by acts like Gang Of Youths, SAFIA, DZ Deathrays and French DJ and producer Klingande who will be playing across two open air stages in Jindabyne at the Claypits venue. There’ll be a ‘Bag Jump Adventure Park’, a Moet Hennessey VIP bar and an exclusive Chandon bar. So put your leave in, plan a snow trip and head to Jindy for one big snow party. With the venue in walking distance from town, can you find a better venue than on the shores of Lake Jindabyne. Plus just up the road are Australia’s two best resorts of

Highway powder poaching By Glenn Cullen - The Snow Gauge IF you had a giant lasso that stretched from Canada’s British Columbia’s Glacier National Park to Creston in the south (with a little rope slack for Fernie) you’d pretty much encapsulate the Powder Highway. Eight ski resorts, 14 snowcat operations and 11 heli-skiing outfits that quite simply offer some of the best bang for your buck snow experiences in the world. The Snow Gauge test drove four ski resorts and a snowcat operation over the Northern Hemisphere spring and liked what he saw.

Red Mountain In many ways Red is the mountain that time forgot: slow chairs, a rather laid back community and a location that, shall we say, is a little out of the way. But that is part of what makes the place so damn good. Three mountains (Red, Granite and Gray)

offer mind-blowing 360 degree riding that can be as accommodating as some languid turns off Paradise or as hard core as the steeps from the back of the microwave tower which tip more than 50 degrees. There’s deeper snowpacks in BC but the eight annual metres are nothing to sneeze at and it is renowned for its regular top-ups. Sealing the deal is the chocolate box town of Rossland - the sense of community and dearth of fast food joints only adding to its charm. If you want (more or less) guaranteed pow, drop into Big Red Cats at the base of the hill for a day or more’s epic cat skiing. Web: redresort.com or bigredcatskiing. com

Fernie So many ski areas try to market themselves as having something for everyone – Fernie is one of those rare places that actually delivers. At the eastern edge of the Powder Highway it can get more than 10 metres of snow in a good season and spread across 2,500+ acres, it’s a destination resort in its own right. In my opinion it’s one of the best resorts for mixed abilities that I have been to in the world. Five alpine bowls, four substantial tree-skiing zones, super-long cruisers and a

blob of beginner terrain at the hub make it great for all-comers. The downtown area has also gone through something of renaissance in recent years and its collection of chic but not ridiculously priced restaurants, art galleries and ski shops have it challenging the likes of Rossland and Nelson in the best town stakes. DOLOMITES MOUNTAINS – The world’s largest skiing region!

This place puts the big back into big mountain. With a vertical drop of 1713 metres it is home to the longest runs in North America - at least until the touted Valemount Resort in upper BC gets built, anyway. In a good season like the one just past it’s ski-able almost right through the season - we found ourselves riding to the base well into April. But the reality is the best terrain is at the top third of the

mountain, the many runs off The North Bowl delivering gold even in spring. There’s a raft of hiking opportunities and good drops off the Southside that will obviously get a bit more sun affected. The possibilities here seem endless but at this stage there are only three lifts, so don’t come looking for a place that holds your hand - Revie will steer you in the right direction but ultimately delivers best for people that are prepared to put in. accommodation on the hill or you can head a few kilometres downtown which is livelier. Revelstoke has town-before-ski resort feel so it’s quite far removed from purpose-built resorts of this world such as Whistler and Vail. Web: revelstokemountainresort.com

Kicking Horse The northern most of the Powder Highway resorts, Kicking Horse is not dissimilar to Revelstoke in many ways but it edges it for variety, tree-skiing and development. The Horse is trying to downplay its fearsome reputation but with options such as Terminator I and Terminator II you’ll probably want to be pretty confident on your planks to spend any significant time here. The masterplan here is a doosey with scope for another half a dozen lifts and substantial terrain expansion and accommodation at the foot of the mountain to go with it. You’ll invariably find yourself soaking up the extraordinary 360 degree views at Eagle’s Eye restaurant but here’s a quick tip – try to book yourself a night there too. It’s not hugely publicised but there are two rooms available that would make a perfect couple’s getaway and with any luck some powder skiing out your door the next day. The town of Golden is about 13km away, just across the Columbia River. Web: Kickinghorseresort.com ◆ Red Mountain. PHOTO: R Flett

Alpine Academy ◆ SMOOTH: Carving turns on the Hakuba piste.

LITTLE did Dave Enright know that failing French in grade nine at his Canadian school would set him on a course toward Japan, and later, an international ski business that would change his, and many others’, lives forever. As Dave soon learned, experience is an induction to the world of living a snow season in the mountains, aka ‘living the dream.’ Over two decades Dave has built an extraordinary company in Evergreen Outdoor Centre, giving opportunities to outdoor lovers the world around to come live in the pristine Hakuba Village, four hours from Tokyo, and live like a local with authentic mountain experiences. Now Dave and his team are giving you an opportunity to live outside the brochure, joining the worldclass Evergreen Alpine Academy (EAA).

What is the EAA? Shredding both sides of the boundary between Hakuba’s resorts and vast backcountry, and with programs from one day through to 12 weeks, the Evergreen Alpine Academy is a High Performance Centre that is home to Evergreen’s high-end rider development programs. The Academy offers gap year programs (412 weeks), career breaks (5 days – 12 weeks), rider development workshops (1-5 days), backcountry courses (1-5 weeks), women’s programs (4 days), ski and snowboard instructor courses, and short off piste clinics focused on steep and deep riding techniques. Develop your riding, expand your knowledge and enhance your skill-set, all whilst experiencing life in an authentic Japanese ski village. Beyond paving the stepping-stones for a future career in the snow industry, your Academy experience will immerse you in a network of likeminded people who will inevitably become lifelong friends and snow riding buddies.

You’ll also meet local Japanese snow lovers and villagers, participate in a fire festival and have the opportunity to learn the local lingo. The Academy is just the first step in your journey.

The Japan Alps average over 12 metres of powder snow each year, and Evergreen hosts an array of backcountry tours to suit varying powder riding abilities.
