Yea Elders agent, Ryan Sergeant, said it was a case of too little, too late for some – but that others would now have feed till December.

“We’ve had a large dump

of rain, which is very welcome,” he said.

“It’s really much needed rain for all of our lower country – but our hill country is well and truly gone and dried off, so it’s too late for that.

“We really needed it, just to maintain our lambs and our cows over the next 6-8 weeks.”

It has been one of the driest starts to spring on record, and the latest Rabobank

October commodity report shows September was the driest on Australian record.

The same report also predicts the dry conditions will be on-going – at least until Christmas this year.

Mr Sergeant said the October rain had fallen in a small band across the state, with the North and North East receiving the majority of the good falls while many in Queensland received their yearly averages overnight.

Elders agent from Geelong, Marty Gleeson, said that though the rain had largely missed southern Victoria, some had been lucky enough to receive up to 20ml. “North of Ballarat got 20ml – but it was more patchy down toward Colac; for many it’s too late, the country is already dry,� Mr Gleeson said.

William Anker runs Yarra Valley Hay, producing around 6000 round bales and 30,000 squares each year.

In his 16 years of hay contracting, Mr Anker said he had never seen a season as bad as the current one. “These next few weeks are critical – everyone is looking for the undergrowth to come up and thicken things up,� he explained.

The Yarra Ranges recorded differing amounts of rain last month, with some parts receiving just 17ml in the October falls, while others recorded up to 46ml.

Either way, Mr Anker said it was good news for those wanting to cut hay. “For us here in the valley, our seasons are a little bit later than everywhere else - we don’t start cutting generally till the end of November. “Every bit at the moment counts – it’s pretty light on at the moment; the yields will certainly be down – it just depends if we get summer rain.�

FRESH AND HAPPY: Ant Wilson is asking purchasers to nominate how much they think his organic produce is worth, with any excess funds used to help feed those less fortunate.

ANT Wilson wants to combine community support with ethical farming, and has opened his organic orchard up to doing just that.

Instead of taking his produce direct to market, Ant wants buyers to know their fruit; where it comes from, how it is produced and who is farming it.

Commonly called CSAs, a Community Supported Agriculture program is an emerging method of sales and distribution, used most commonly in the sustainable farming sector.

Ant runs Tellurian Fruit Gardens, an organic orchard in Harcourt, Central Victoria.

Previously known as the Mt Alexander Fruit Gardens, the property was featured in a recent Southern Farmer feature when, along with three other farmers, WKH VWDWH V o UVW RUJDQLF FR RS ZDV formed.

Like many, Ant is concerned about the future of agriculture – the need to balance commercial SURo W ZKLOH PLQLPLVLQJ FDUERQ footprint and food miles.

While the idea of a farming CSA is not new – the scheme is popular in Japan and America – Ant EHOLHYHV KLV LV WKH o UVW IUXLW RQO\ operation.

“I’m excited to be introducing a new way for people to connect directly with the farm and get great value at the same time,� he said. “By engaging with my CSA, members are getting ownership over their food system – they have a chance to learn and participate through our direct relationship.�

In a further break from traditional fruit-boxes, Ant is asking people to nominate a price they wish to pay when they sign-on for the CSA. If a box of fruit is $10 to produce, members are asked to pay its value, rather than the cost.

The hope is, Ant explained, that those who can afford to will pay more; with the excess then used to help those who cannot afford even $10. “Some people have a lot, and some don’t have enough – I’m asking people to pay above the suggested price – so that I can offer the produce to some at a lower price,� he said.

If the current fruit season does not meet expectations, Ant already has a store of stewed, juiced and preserved fruit that will bolster fresh varieties in the weekly deliveries.

THE latest ABS data confirms that the adult cattle slaughter numbers for August â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the most recent figures available, sit 10 per cent higher than at the same time last year.

Meat and Livestock Australia, in a report released last month, confirm that the year to date level increase has been driven entirely by cows and heifers.

Nationally, year-to-August female slaughter was up 22 per cent on 2017, while male slaughter was down one per cent.

Winter female slaughter spike: Dry conditions have driven winter female slaughter to levels not seen since the drought years of 2013â&#x20AC;&#x201C;15.

June to August national female slaughter was up 23 per cent on 2017 figures.

The sharpest rises were recorded in Victoria (31 per cent) and WA (37 per cent).

August marked the fourth successive month in which the proportion of national female slaughter surpassed 50 per cent of total kills, at 52 per cent.

On a 12-month rolling average basis, the figure has risen to 49 per cent, indicating the continuation of a herd liquidation phase.

NAB Rural Commodities Index rises 6.5 per cent

IN what is the biggest monthly gain since December 2010, strong wheat and cattle prices drove a 6.5 per cent rise in the National Australia Bank (NAB) September Rural Commodities Index, released last month.

Results once again varied by state and commodity, largely due to mixed seasonal conditions across the country.

Strong grain prices saw the index rise 10.8 per cent in Western Australia (WA), its biggest gain since 2012, while in Tasmania it only gained 2.8 per cent on the back of weak global dairy prices.

NAB Agribusiness economist, Phin Ziebell, said that challenging seasonal conditions in the eastern states had seen domestic grain prices hit extreme levels, with ASX wheat jumping 22 per cent to average $430/tonne. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Domestic grain premiums are banking on very limited eastern Australian supply and export,â&#x20AC;? Mr Ziebell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tight volumes do look likely given the poor state of eastern winter crops, and there are associated concerns around the ability of livestock producers to absorb feed costs in drought conditions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The national wheat production forecast is down

Although October did bring good rain in some areas, eastern production will still be below average with a lot of cereal crops already cut for hay. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With a large portion of the canola crop now also cut for hay, prices are high and could remain that way for most domestic grain throughout summer and into next year,â&#x20AC;? Mr Ziebell said.

Livestock prices have been mixed, with cattle prices holding up quite well - but lamb falling of late. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After a big increase in late August, the National Trade Lamb Indicator (NTLI) has come back to a similar level as this time last year, sitting at 697 c/kg,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wool has seen some weakness too, although EMI is now back above 2000c/kg.â&#x20AC;?

Cattle prices have remained resilient, with the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) up 6.1 per cent despite tough conditions.

The EYCI is predicted to remain in the mid 400-500c/ kg range over the coming months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although there has been a big drop in demand for re-

Rain over the past week has improved the summer crop outlook, and sorghum planting conditions have been boosted, albeit from a low base.

ABARESâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; September estimate for sorghum production in 2018/19 was around 1.6 million tonnes, however, even a good season is unlikely to fully ameliorate the feed shortage owing to limited pasture and the poor winter crop.

The BoM three month outlook is mostly drier than average, except for parts of WA and the NT. The bureau has now moved to El Nino alert, pointing to a 70 per cent chance of an El Nino event developing this year.

Hereford discount HEREFORDS Australia have introduced an amnesty period until December 31 to allow any members wishing to upgrade eligible animals from the Performance Register (HPR) to Herdbook Register (HBR) to only pay $50 + GST per animal.

All HPR animals in the pedigree will have to be upgraded in order for an animal to be eligible for upgrading.

The fee shall revert to the scheduled fee of $220 from January 1, 2019. Please note that to be eligible the animal must be able to be traced back to Herdbook (HBR) animals through all lines of the pedigree.

Luxury brand lessons for small Australian vignerons AUSTRALIA is home to some of the best winemakers in the world â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but there is a never ending struggle to balance quality, price and the customer perception of both.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s according to 2017 Nufo HOG 6FKRODU DQG 6RXWK $XVWUDOLDQ wine maker, Toby Bekkers, who with support from Wine Australia, has released a research report revealing three key elements of success that luxury brands possess.

Mr Bekkers and his wife run Bekkers Wine in McLaren Vale, and he is convinced that Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s small winemakers could do more to posiWLRQ WKHLU o QH ZLQHV DORQJVLGH WKH best in the world.

Having been fascinated with the psychology and strategy behind prestige brands for many years, Mr Bekkers was motivated to use his 1XIo HOG 6FKRODUVKLS WR UHVHDUFK WKH techniques and concepts that brands use to drive price premiums. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fine wine is a discretionary purchase, and while many small wine producers will not, and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t aspire to, become true luxury brands, there is surely something to be gained by understanding luxury brand strategy and the associated approach to customer engagement,â&#x20AC;? Mr Bekkers said.

Researching and interviewing international luxury brand representatives from a range of industries around the world, including fashion, jewellery, thoroughbred bloodstock, SHDUOV DQG o QH DUW 0U %HNNHUV XQ earthed the fact that most of these

They understand their unique brand identity, they work to understand their customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; emotional drivers and desires, and they are master storytellers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These brands engage with consumer groups that are attracted to their unique attributes, rather than tailoring the product to a particular demographic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not suggesting that they ignore the customer, but they focus on clues to their emotional needs and align communications accordingly,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I came across a perfect example of this at Krug Champagne in Reims, France; at Krug, a training manager told me very clearly that they have their own brand identity, and the

customer gravitates toward them.â&#x20AC;?

For Australian winemakers, a shift from production-centric com-

Coordinated defence against plant disease WINE Australia and Hort Innovation have teamed up through the Plant Biosecurity Research Initiative (PBRI) against a devastating bacteria that could cripple the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s multibillion dollar wine and horticulture sectors.

Xylella fastidiosa is an exotic bacteria that prevents a plant from feeding by impeding the movement of rising sap.

While Australia is currently free from Xylella, it threatens more than 350 commercial, ornamental and native plant species across the country.

The impact of Xylella overseas has been catastrophic, infecting more than 200 million citrus trees in Brazil, destroying one million olive trees in Italy and devastating the Californian grape sector â&#x20AC;&#x201C; causing annual losses in excess of US$100 million.

Dr Jo Luck, program director at the PBRI, said there was no known cure and prevention was the only safeguard against what has been deemed Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most threatening exotic plant disease. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If established, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has estimated the potential cost to Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grape and wine sector alone at up to $7.9 billion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The impact on Australian horticulture would be just as devastating,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Be on lookout for scours in beef calves GET IT EARLY: Bobby calves are often susceptible to scours, particularly those that are taken from their mothers shortly after birth.

A scours outbreak can be time consuming, expensive to treat and, if not managed corUHFWO\ FDQ UHVXOW LQ VLJQLo FDQW losses.

Calf scours is most common in beef calves during the o UVW VL[ ZHHNV RI OLIH ,W V GLIo FXOW WR FRQWURO WKH disease once calves start to scour and become sick.

Therefore, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to manage calving herds to avoid outbreaks.

Scours is caused by an inWHUDFWLRQ EHWZHHQ WKH HQYL ronment, the health of the calf and the presence of disease causing agents (pathoJHQV ZKLFK LQFOXGH EDFWHULD viruses and protozoa.

These pathogens are shed LQ ORZ EXW LQFUHDVHG QXP EHUV LQ WKH PDQXUH RI FRZV around the time of calving, and in much greater numbers in the manure of scouring calves and unaffected calves up to six months of age.

During a scours outbreak, a rapid build-up of pathogens can occur in the environment.

While the pathogensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; actions vary, their effects are

Burra steps up with price rise to milk supply partners

BURRA Foods have announced a step up in base FMP (Farmgate Milk Price) for milk supply partners equivalent to $0.13/kg of milk solids across the FY19 year.

In a letter to milk supply partners, Burra Foods chief executive officer,

Grant Crothers, noted that this step up was the result of a softening AUD against the USD, rather than market improvement.

Speaking late last month, Mr Crothers said â&#x20AC;&#x153;global markets have remained relatively flat so far this

season and in the case of the GDT, every auction bar one has declined since the start of Juneâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thankfully, the Aussie dollar has depreciated by around six per cent since the start of July, which has enabled us to pass on as much

benefit as we can to milk supply partners via this step up,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Mr Crothers noted that conditions were very challenging this year for many farmers, including dairy farmers in Gippsland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We acknowledge the tough

business decisions our milk supply partners are regularly making caused by dry seasonal conditions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It seems each sub-region is impacted differently, and we will continue to regularly review FMP considering all market conditions.â&#x20AC;?

Decades of septic system misery, banished in days.

Queensland couple Mike and Rose Maynard talk about their decadeslong battle with septic tank odours and fouling, and the environmentally friendly solution that restored their pride in their home within two weeks.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our septic system was put in when we built in 1988,â&#x20AC;? says Mike Maynard from his rural property in sunny Queensland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over the years we have had continuing problems with the system not working properly. The area around the trench would get so wet and boggy that we could not even walk near it, let alone use the mower.â&#x20AC;?

But that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the worst bit of their dysfunctional septic system. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The smell would become almost overpowering at times,â&#x20AC;? says Mike, â&#x20AC;&#x153;especially when it rained or when we had visitors to stay, which was quite embarrassing.â&#x20AC;?

The stink that stuck The problem wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go away, which is common with septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As time went on, the smell was becoming a constant thing,â&#x20AC;? explains Rose.

Septic systems are much like a digestive system for your house. Just as you need healthy bacteria in your body, your septic system needs a healthy balance of good bacteria to process the waste from your home.

Accepting help when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needed This is Melissaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story This story is re-printed from the Gippsland Jersey Calendar as part of the Southern Farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ongoing commitment to mental health awareness MELISSA may suffer from mental illness, but sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also an incredibly brave and resilient woman.

Diagnosed with postnatal depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, she realises heavily on her husband, Bruce, to help care for her and their two children.

Melissa does whatever it takes to live life well, and is open to others about the importance of seeking help.

Melissa and Bruce live on a

fourth generation dairy farm, and have had to take steps, such as adjusting milking times, to best manage Melissaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diagnosis.

Bruce says that he has often been confronted at the supermarket, asking why he is the one taking their children to appointments and doing the grocery shopping.

Once, too ashamed to admit to his wifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s condition, Bruce now proudly states that he supports his wife.

Melissa was raised in Melbourne and moved to the dairy farm after she met Bruce.

She loved his resilience and sense of humour.

Melissa said.

Some people in rural communities view mental illness and mental health as a weakness â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and Bruce did too before he was exposed to it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now we see it as a sign of strength and something that people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to be ashamed of,â&#x20AC;? Podcast tells story of herbicide resistance   RESULTS from a five-year national survey, which paints a sobering picture of the growing herbicide resistance issue in key cropping weeds, are the focus of a Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) podcast released last month.

John Broster, from the Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation at Charles Sturt University, spoke about herbicide resistance during his guest stint on the GRDC podcast series, which aims to deliver grain growers, advisers, industry stakeholders and researchers timely information about the latest seasonal issues, groundbreaking research and trial results with on-farm application.

The series is updated weekly, with podcasts collected from across Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grain growing regions, and is firmly focused on delivering seasonally-relevant information to growers and advisers to help inform grower decision making and profitability.

The interview with Dr Broster explains the survey project, which was a joint monitoring initiative that saw the research team visit 3000 randomly selected paddocks, taking 2000 samples of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s number one weed, annual ryegrass.

The survey revealed that nationally, about 75 per cent of the populations of ryegrass tested are resistant to Group A â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; herbicides.

Few people are ever fully prepared for an emergency like a bushfire outbreak and the speed at which the fire front can travel.

Consequently they often allow little time to implement an effective fire defence.

Davey has a list of recommendations for effective management and maintenance for consumers, ahead of the fire season.

1. Know the machine: All members of the household need to be proficient in the location, operation and fitting of attachments like inlet and outlet hoses to the fire pump.

2. Practice: A well rehearsed and documented fire plan is critical to personal survival.

3. Fuel - Petrol: Many people fail to recognise that petrol has a limited life, losing its volatility and effectively becoming ‘stale’. A simple and recommended solution is to change the fuel every two months, either by running the pump or draining it of fuel.

Better still, both leading petrol engine manufacturers offer a fuel stabiliser which will dramatically extend the life of the fuel, but it must be added when new fuel is purchased.

4. Fuel - Diesel: Has a longer shelf life but it generally needs to be stored at low ambient temperatures to extend the storage time. Major fuel companies expect diesel fuel to have 12 months or longer life at an ambient temperature of 20ºC, or six months at an ambient temperature of 30ºC. 5. Engine oils are another consideration and individual engine manufacturers offer their own specially branded engine oils to best suit their engines. Synthetic multi-grade engine oil is NOT a suitable alternative, so it is important to follow the manufacturer’s engine lubrication recommendations.

6. Running the engine regularly will ensure that oil is well distributed around the moving parts to provide best lubrication and a longer working life.

7. Air cleaners are another important consideration, so ensure your pump set has adequate clean air access. The air cleaner or filter needs to be checked and replaced as per the recommendation of the engine manufacturer.

8. Keeping the engine cool also has a dramatic effect on the power it can deliver.

Protecting the pump from radiant heat in a flame proof enclosure is the ultimate solution, while adding a mist spray around the pump or its enclosure will aid cooling and humidify the air.

9. A general maintenance regime involving regular checks will ensure that fuel lines are in good condition, the recoil starter works and a regular service schedule is adhered to will pay dividends.

10. Check the plumbing: Time spent investigating and maintaining the water system is also important.

11. Check for leaves, debris and sticks: These can impede the inlet system, while for permanent installations, a foot valve and strainer at the end of the suction line can overcome obstructions.

12. The system should be checked for air leaks and to check that all gaskets and seals are in good order.

13. Having an underground ring main installed around your property with durable hydrant or standpipe outlets can give you much greater coverage.

So, as the summer fire season approaches the traditional motto of ‘be prepared’ applies. Establish your fire plan early. Adequately brief and train all family members in its resources and features.

UNDER dry seasonal or drought conditions around Australia, many farmers are looking at options to reduce their water consumption in the dairy.

For many, this is a direct result of reduced access to water - for others, it is an attempt to ensure water supplies are maintained for as long as possible.

In 2000, a survey of dairy farmers found the PRVW HIo FLHQW GDLU\ VKHGV XVHG XQGHU OLWUHV of water per cow each year.

At the other end of the scale, the most water used was 38,000 litres per cow each year - almost 20 times more than the best performers.

The average was 9600 litres per cow each year.

This large variation in water use in dairies indicates that there are opportunities to save water and costs on many farms.

Ronobri has been breeding the best for 70 years ROBERT and Lorraine Mitchell run Ronobri Poll Dorset, White Suffolk and Ryeland Studs at Lockington, just north of Bendigo.

The Poll Dorset Stud was founded in 1969, and they annually join around 300 breeding ewes.

The Ryeland Stud was founded in 1948, joining approximately 100 ewes annually.

The White Suffolk Stud was founded in 2003, with 150-plus ewes mated each year.

Across the three studs, between 150-200 stud and flock rams are mostly sold privately on property to clients within a 150km radius.

Ronobri regularly add top sires to the stud to enhance their breeding program – often outlaying $8000-10,000 for these rams.

The outsourced rams are largely purchased from Armdale/Armdale Park at Marrar, NSW, one of the country’s leading Poll Dorset Studs.

At the 2018 annual sale, Armdale Park 198/17T was purchased for the top price of $12,000.

Detpagrove and Anden bloodlines are used in the White Suffolk Stud.

With stable bloodlines, it enables Ronobri to maintain evenness of type and conformation, with a strong emphasis on structural soundness and good Downs-type wool.

Ronobri rams consistently sire prime market topping lambs for their clients.

On property, Ronobri run only their stud sheep, which ensures a very strict health status; in particular brucellosis accreditation and OJD vaccination.

As Ronobri approach almost 50 years of breeding Poll Dorsets, 16 years of breeding White Suffolks and 70 years of Ryeland breeding, they believe the quality within the studs is at an all-time high.

Over the years they have continued to display sheep at major events, such as the Elmore Field Days, Bendigo Agricultural Show and Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society Show.
