VICTORIANS are being encouraged to buy chicken grown and processed in the state to support local farmers, businesses and jobs. The call to action, from Victorian Farmers Federation Chicken Meat president Allan Bullen, is in response to national processor Baiada announcing it would shut its Laverton processing plant from March 31, 2017. The move has impacted 16 broiler farms who are now desperately seeking alternative means to generate income. At Rockbank, just a 15-minute drive from the processing plant, Sham Sharma from Nevas Farms fears he will have to sell up to meet mortgage demands. Mr Sharma spent more than $100,000 replacing shed floors, installing a new water tank and improving access roads in the past 18 months.

He said he received a perplexing letter in July saying that he no longer had a contract with Baiada – a decision which was reversed when the VFF stepped in and he received another letter saying it was an “oversight”. However, the good news was short lived as Mr Sharma was informed in October the processing plant would close, one of the get out clauses available in the contract. The 60-year-old is now running the sheds without a manager, who took up another opportunity to secure employment. Unless he can find another manager his last batch will be sold in December. “I would have liked my son and grandson to have been able to take it on one day but that’s not going to happen now,” Mr Sharma said. “I’ve already been making phone calls to look at all opportunities,” he said.
