Politics put aside to ensure China trade China free trade agreement passed through Parliament at last

VICTORIAN Farmers Federation (VFF) president Peter Tuohey said the importance of trade has trumped petty politics after legislation was passed through the House of Representatives allowing the China Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) to move ahead. The agreement, which is touted to open up trade opportunities worth billions of dollars to the Australian agricultural industry with our biggest trading partners, has been welcomed by many industry groups and stakeholders, in particular those in the dairy and wine sectors. “This is not just a good deal for dairy, cattle farmers and horticulture growers, this is an historic agreement to propel the Australian economy,” Mr Tuohey said. ment and Labor will not in any way change the commitments concluded on the free trade agreement negotiations, nor discriminate against our biggest trading partner. The Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) chair Noel Campbell said the deal recognises dairy as one of the nation’s export strongholds and must be ratified as soon as possible to open up markets for Australian dairy producers. “This is a genuine free trade agreement that when implemented will set Australian dairy products on a path to full trade liberalisation into China,” he said.
