VICTORIAN Farmers Federation (VFF) president Peter Tuohey said the importance of trade has trumped petty politics after legislation was passed through the House of Representatives allowing the China Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) to move ahead.

The agreement, which is touted to open up trade opportunities worth billions of dollars to the Australian agricultural industry with our biggest trading partners, has been welcomed by many industry groups and stakeholders, in particular those in the dairy and wine sectors.

“This is not just a good deal for dairy, cattle farmers and horticulture growers, this is an historic agreement to propel the Australian economy,” Mr Tuohey said.

ment and Labor will not in any way change the commitments concluded on the free trade agreement negotiations, nor discriminate against our biggest trading partner.

The Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) chair Noel Campbell said the deal recognises dairy as one of the nation’s export strongholds and must be ratified as soon as possible to open up markets for Australian dairy producers.

“This is a genuine free trade agreement that when implemented will set Australian dairy products on a path to full trade liberalisation into China,” he said.

Skyrocketing local rates could be a thing of the past CAPPING local council rates is one step closer to becoming a reality after it was recently introduced into Parliament amendments to the Local Government Act. The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) has welcomed the state government’s commitment to implementing a cap on local council rates, with VFF vice president David Jochinke having said that farmers have had enough of skyrocketing local council rates year on year. “The VFF welcomes rates capping as a tool to ensure that local councils remain accountable to their community of ratepayers, including farmers who contribute substantially to local government revenue,� he said.

“While we are disappointed that the cap will not be applicable at the rate category level, we welcome the increased scrutiny and improved transparency that will be required of local councils as they prepare their next budgets.�

The VFF have previously argued that to prevent the burden of municipal council rates being shifted from one category of ratepayers to another, that a cap should be implemented at category level – residential, commercial, farm.

This would place a maximum threshold on what revenue could be drawn from farming families. “The amendments that have been proposed to the legislation use the consumer price index

(CPI) as the base for the rate cap, however, there is exibility provided in what the ultimate cap may be,� Mr Jochinke said.

The detail of implementing and complying with the cap will sit outside of the legislation and be set by the local government minister after consultation with the Essential Services Commission. “Many shires are reliant on farmers for the majority of their income. “Increasing rates is a burden which cannot be continually sustained by farmers, especially in a year with very poor seasonal conditions. “We strongly urge the minister for local government to challenge local councils to keep any rate rises well below a CPI cap. “The government’s

EGG Farmers Australia (EFA) is adamant that they are united in their approach on a definition for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;free rangeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in response to the Consultation Regulation Impact Statement on Free Range egg labelling.

OUTSTANDING COMPETITION: Semex general manager Jim Conroy said the quality of cows that have been judged to date has been outstanding.

AUSTRALIA’S largest annual dairy livestock competition is now under way bringing together commercial and registered dairymen together like no other event in the country.

The 15th Semex and Holstein Australia On-Farm Competition is now in full swing, having started in Tasmania and South Australia in October and moving to Queensland and Western Australia in November and finishing in NSW and Victoria in December.

The competition involves close to 3000 cows and 500 farms throughout the country with Semex general manager Jim Conroy having said that the feedback from the regional competitions that have taken place so far has been “quite outstanding”.

“There is no doubt that this competition is gaining more and more impetus every year, if that’s possible,” he said.

“It is still the priority of our farmers to breed quality cows that have longevity that they can be proud of and be happy to work with.

“This competition is all about helping our producers gain exposure and marketability for their animals without the workload and costs usually associated with showing, picturing and/or marketing cattle.

“It is also getting more and more prominence in terms of the values people put on the results with regard to the promotional and marketing value for their cattle,” Mr Conroy said.

The cows are judged for their conformation on-farm, without preparation and many of Holstein Australia’s 29 sub-branches have already kicked off their local competitions which involves one judge per sub-branch.

Entries peak at more than 250 animals in some of the subbranch strongholds.

The first and second place getter from each class at the sub-branch level will graduate to their respective state finals where they will be re-assessed by a fresh over-judge to find the individual state champions for age.

Mr Conroy said the beauty of the competition is that “you just don’t know where the next great ones are coming from”.

“There can be no doubt that the breeding industry remains alive and well and there is always good money to be made in selling high-end livestock,” he said.

The Victorian presentation date and venue will be held at the Witchmount Estate Winery, near Melton on Tuesday, December 1, 2015.

“This means more jobs across the industry, both on farm and in processing plants.

“The flow-on effects of this growth would undoubtedly benefit the rural and regional communities where dairy plays an important role.”

Mr Campbell said that swiftly implementing the agreement will ensure Australia does not fall further behind its competitors who already have a free trade agreement with China.

“Ratifying the agreement before the end of the year will mean that Australian dairy can take advantage of the tariff reduction timeline as of January, 1, 2016.

“Any further delay in the parliamentary process will cost the Australian dairy industry up to $76 million in tariff savings for Australian origin product.

“It’s vital that Australia acts quickly to seize the opportunity for early implementation of this agreement.

“We must get the ball rolling – every day of unnecessary delay holds Australia’s growth and prosperity back,” Mr

Campbell said.

Dumbalk North dairy farmer Damian Murphy said the ChAFTA is a fantastic opportunity to get our products into China on a level playing field.

“New Zealand is our major dairy competitor in this area and they have had an agreement in place now for a long time and we Aussies like an even fight and it has felt like we have been punching with one hand behind our back,” he said.

Mr Murphy has grown up on his family’s dairy farm and has been working on it for the past 15 years having recently just fully taken ownership of the 350 acre property.

Some of his product is exported through Murray Goulburn who he supplies his milk to.

“I supply to Murray Goulburn and they export about 40 per cent to China and keep about 60 per cent for the domestic market.

“So besides this agreement making us more competitive to Chinese consumers, it gives us dairy farmers more confidence to know that our products are getting out there around the world and competing.

“I have been to China twice and it is a very competitive market in terms of dairy, with all of Europe selling into there too, so this is a very positive step for the industry.

“And I would just like to say that UDV (United Dairyfarmers of Victoria) did a fantastic job at getting it front and centre.

“We missed out in Japan, and didn’t get a good deal in Korea, so we needed a good deal for dairy in China and they did a terrific job,” Mr Murphy said.

The V F F and the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria (UDV), together with the Australian Dairy Farmers and the National Farmers Federation (NFF) have campaigned tirelessly to ensure the ChAFTA passed Federal Parliament before the end of 2015.

UDV president Adam Jenkins said delaying the agreement could cost the agricultural export trade up to $300 million in 2016 alone, with untold flow-on effects in loss of jobs and future income to rural and regional communities across Australia.

“We expect that around 600 to 700 jobs will be cre-

ated within the first year of ratification,” he said.

“More dairy jobs mean more vibrant, prosperous and growing rural and regional communities across all of Australia’s dairying regions,” Mr Jenkins said.

NFF president Brent Finlay said the agreement is a “game-changer for Australian agriculture” and should never have been held to ransom.

“There was always too much riding on this agreement for it to be sidelined,” he said.

“Ratification will mean Australian farmers and agribusinesses can take advantage of the reduced tariffs on food and fibre products as soon as possible.

“This presents huge opportunities for Australian farmers, boosting economic growth and farm-gate returns.

“We have expressed concern about the potential changes to skilled migration policy which could increase the cost and regulatory burden on Australian farmers.

“We will be looking closely at the detail of the agreement to assess its likely impact on the sector.

“Australian farmers are

capitalising on world leading innovation and digital technology to guide them through the next wave of growth.

“Trade is a crucial element to facilitate this investment, connecting our food and fibre to a global network of consumer,” Mr Finlay said.

Australia’s three national grape and wine community organisations welcomed the news as representatives said that the Australian grape and wine community would be significant beneficiaries of ChAFTA.

In the 12 months to October, sales to China rose 47 per cent in value to a record $313 million, driven by demand for wines in the higher price points.

Exports to China above $10 per litre FOB are now worth $116 million.

“Under ChAFTA the current import tariff of 14 per cent for Australian bottled wine and 20 per cent for bulk wine will be phased out over four years, providing a significant boost for Australian wine companies exporting to China,” said Winemakers’ Federation Australia president Tony D’Aloisio.

Coldstream Hills winemaker Andrew Fleming said it was “very exciting” to win and to see so many wines from the Yarra Valley receiving accolades.

“The Yarra Valley winemakers are making some really good wines, with chardonnay doing particularly well as it has for many years and you can see the evidence with the number that got up in the wine show,” he said.

“You are always surprised to win an award as it is incredibly competitive and there are a lot of entries, so you need to have a good wine to start with and a little bit of luck.

“This wine was an accountant’s nightmare as its yields were very small, but we just had an inkling it was going to do well as it was very high-quality fruit.

“It has been entered into four wine shows and won four gold medals, so I think it is just a case of the wine gods smiling and deciding it was going to be our turn.

“You have those inklings sometimes and you know that quality which just makes your lights turn on,” Mr Fleming said.

FOUR of the major wine awards won at this year’s Royal Melbourne Wine Awards (RMWA) were won by wineries situated in the Yarra Valley, cementing the area as the premier cool climate region in Australia.

The 2015 RMWA received 3097 entries from 537 exhibitors, including 114 first-time entrants and was judged over five days at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

A line-up of 35 Australian wine industry experts assessed the entries, led by acting chair of judges Jim Chatto.

With trophies awarded to 16 producers across 12 wine regions, Mr Chatto said the results attest to the depth and breadth of quality winemaking in Australia today.

“In my 18 years of judging, I have never seen such a strong group in wines in the trophy taste-offs,” he said.

“My brief to the team was to judge across style, to look for wines of impeccable balance and harmony.”

Nine major and 15 Best in Class trophies were awarded, including the Victorian Trophies for Wines of Provenance, recognising the best white and red wines over a minimum of 10 years, spanning three vintages of the same label.

This trophy awards the skill and consistency of the winemaker, with the white trophy awarded to Yarra Valley’s TarraWarra Estate’s Chardonnay

2014, 2006 and 2004.

TarraWar r a E st a t e general manager and wine maker Clare Holloran said it was “a nice surprise” to have won the trophy. “ We h ave a l w a y s prided ourselves on the longevity of our wines and their ability to develop and mature with age, so it was really nice to be recognised for us achieving what we want the wine to achieve.”

Ms Holloran said TarraWarra Estate has not entered the RMWA for the past 15 years but this particular class was of interest to them as it was judged on the longevity of the wine.

“It was something that I thought was really worthwhile for us to enter and I thought the way they looked at the three vintages was a very interesting way to judge.

With 70 acres of the Yarra Valley property under vine, all of TarraWarra’s wines are meticulously grown, hand-picked, vinified and aged on the estate.

The Reserve Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the vineyard’s flagship wines and have been joined by single block wines: the K-Block Merlot; J-Block Shiraz; and a Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier (MRV).

TarraWarra also makes the Estate range by blending from blocks across the vineyard.

The vineyard sells directly through cellar door or online and distributes via certain retailers

Since its first vintage in 1985, Coldstream Hills has grown to be one of Australia’s leading small wineries.

With a reputation for producing outstanding single vineyard and reserve wines Coldstream Hills has a particular focus on the internationally heralded varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

In addition Coldstream Hills produces Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and sparkling wine, across three tiers and offerings.

Wine writer, judge and personality James Halliday founded Coldstream Hills in 1985 and although he has since retired from winemaking, he remains active within the business and takes the photo that appears as the labels on the bottles of the vineyard’s wines, which is updated each year.

Mr Fleming said by winning the trophy it “definitely has a flow-on affect” with more awareness of a vineyard’s wines and in terms of sales.

“It’s a tremendous accolade locally and for my team and you find that some of your finewine customers order a little more, so the wine shows do play a part in your business,” he said.

Celebrating ongoing success is Oakridge Wines, also based in the Yarra Valley, which was awarded the Douglas Seabrook Trophy for Best Single Vineyard for the second year in a row; this year for its Chardonnay Oakridge Local Vineyard Series Barkala Ridge 2013.

This wine was also awarded Best Chardonnay at the awards presentation evening.

In a true sign of sustained quality, the viticultural team behind the Barkala Ridge Chardonnay were also awarded the Kim Ludvigsen trophy for viticultural excellence for the second consecutive year.

This award in Ludvigsen’s name recognises excellence in viticulture and is awarded to the team behind the grapes that produce the single vineyard trophy winning wine.

Well-known as the most respected wine show in Australia, the RMWA has been conducted for the past 131 years by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria.

Victorians awarded Rural Finance scholarships A SELECTION of Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top agricultural students have been presented with more than $100,000 in scholarships to help support their studies thanks to Rural Finance.

A total of nine recipients from across Victoria have been awarded as part of the Rural Finance Scholarship Program which aims to provide students with the means to grow and prosper in their pursuit of a career in agriculture.

Mr Bourman also wants the

State Government to explore the benefits of a firearms category classification system, handgun regulations, legalising suppressors, ammunition storage laws and including paintball markers in the current licensing scheme.

The state memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motion comes as the Federal Government undertakes a review of the National Firearms Agreement which is likely to consider recommendations handed down in the recent Martin Place Siege Review. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen from those discussions already,

Cows found to be able to respond to a call ACCORDING to FutureDairy researchers cows can be trained to respond to sound, opening up the possibilities for being able to teach them to come to the dairy when called.

Researcher Cameron Clark said that while there was plenty of anecdotal evidence from farmers that cows could be called to the dairy, this study paved the way for farmers to use cow calling as a powerful management tool.

“It’s given us the confidence for further research on the best way to train cows and to look at the potential to trial individual cows to respond to their own unique sound,” he said.

“It has potential application on farms with both conventional milking systems and robots.

“Dairy farmers can spend more than seven hours a week herding the cows up to the dairy for morning and evening milking sessions.

“The use of automatic gates and calling sounds could eliminate this daily task,” Dr Clark said.

The concept has even greater potential in voluntary milking systems where cows move by themselves from the paddock to the robotic dairy and back to the paddock.

The t-shaped maze had feed bins at both sides of the‘t’.

The three-week study involved six dairy heifers aged about 20 months.

Recognising that young heifers are shy, the team started with a few days training to familiarise the animals with the maze.

Ms Green said the team used Pavlov’s dog principle to teach the cows to associate the sound with a feed reward.

The team was amazed at how quickly the heifers picked up the signals.

“Initially the cows guessed their way through the maze, but they quickly started to turn their heads to where the sound was, they would really think about it,” Ms Green said.

Four of the six heifers received a perfect score four times per day for four days.

The other two managed to get it right 75 per cent of the time.

The FutureDairy team wants to continue the investigations given such promising results, with a follow up study currently being run with cows wearing a collar that generates sound.

“Ultimately we hope we can develop a system where individual cows respond to their own sound by moving from the paddock to the robotic dairy for milking,” Ms Green said.

Goat industry sets pathway to new five-year research plan THE Australian goat industry is set to take on-farm practices, production and exports to the next level with the release of a new five-year research and development plan.

Developed by the Goat Industry Council of Australia (GICA), the Goatmeat and Livestock Industry Strategic Plan 2020 details clear research and development targets for the industry and attributes responsibility to key service providers for achieving those goals.

Projects will include regular market and production reports and best management practice guides, which will assist producers in making more informed business and herd management decisions.

GICA president Rick Gates said it was an exciting time to be in the goat industry, with implementation of the plan an opportunity to grow production and export markets.

“This strategy is a sign that the industry has

matured into a professional and permanent part of the Australian livestock industry landscape, with substantial financial opportunities on offer,” he said.

Australia is currently the world’s largest goatmeat exporter with about 95 per cent of production exported to countries in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and the US, to the value of $241.8 million last year.

“To continue to grow the goatmeat supply base, increased numbers

of producers are needed who choose to add goats as an enterprise within their business, rather than those who view goats as an opportunistic harvesting option,” Mr Gates said.

He added that there is now the opportunity to increase the number of managed herds and for further integration of goats into mixed grazing enterprises, which will assist in improving the consistency of supply which has impeded industry development in the past.

Farmers learn how to benefit from trade agreements at Elmore Field Days FARMERS and agribusinesses learned how they can directly benefit from major trade agreements in North Asia and the Asia-Pacific at seminars hosted by Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie during this year’s Elmore Field Days.

Celebrating rural women globally THE Yarra Valley was the backdrop for a gathering of progressive and inspiring rural women as they celebrated International Day of Rural Women hosted by agribusiness banking specialist, Rabobank.

The celebration was held at family owned winery Helen’s Hill Estate which provided a rare opportunity for like-minded rural women to come together and showcase the crucial role they play in their businesses, communities and families, and how leading by example provides young women with role models when considering a career in agriculture.

Celebrated on October 15 each year, International Day of Rural Women is an initiative of the United Nations, which celebrates the important role that women play in enhancing agricultural and rural development worldwide.

The theme for the 2015 International Day of Rural Women was the need for peace all over the world.

National Farmers’ Federation vice president Fiona Simson said that finding peace for our international counterparts is a key priority.

“Women grow half of the world’s food and represent 43 per cent of the agriculture labour force in developing countries, primarily through the institution of the family farm as unpaid and unrecognised farmers,” she said.

Ms Simson added that it is estimated that one third of Australian women live in rural and regional communities and 40 per cent of Australian farmers are women.

The Rabobank event featured Katrina Myers from Barham Avocados who gave insight into running a multi-

generational business, which includes her mother, her husband and their three young children.

The family farm, ‘Horseshoe-Bend’ at Barham in the western Riverina, has been in the family for four generations, with Ms Myers’ parents planting their first tree 40 years ago.

Avocados are now the core business, with 200 tonnes of fruit produced each year and plans are afoot to increase production further.

“I have always loved farming and feel grateful that Tim (husband) and

I made the decision to return to the family farm five years ago,” Ms Myers said.

“But farming is like any other business, you have to be innovative or you won’t survive.

“You can have the best wheat, the best avocados, the best carrots, but with the marketplace the way it is, you have to find a way to stand out from the crowd.

“And for us, this has meant selling our value-proposition directly to our consumers, which is all about our deli-

cious fresh produce that is pesticide free, and grown with love and picked by hand.

“Consumers want to know about the food they are buying, so we love sharing our story with them, which is not only a story about us, but our region and community,” she said.

As a strong advocate for women in agriculture, Ms Myers said much of her inspiration has come from her mother and grandmother – two strong, successful women.

“For women considering a career in agriculture, doing your research to find out where the gap in the market is and then looking at what other small producers have done to get themselves going is important, as anything is possible,” she said.

Meanwhile, South Australian mixed farmer, community leader and advocate for rural women and youth Sarah Powell is the 2015 national winner of the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women’s Award.

Ms Powell received $10,000 as part of the South Australian state award earlier this year, which will support her to develop the ‘Champions Academy’ pilot program, which will foster personal development through sport and mentoring, and teach aspiring leaders how to lead by example, act with integrity, think selflessly and demonstrate commitment.

As the national winner she will receive a further $10,000 to enable her to develop her leadership skills and participate in speaking engagements.

“And as the Field Days are about the community, we have four local fire brigades benefit and share out the gate takings and all the local primary schools that provided catering reported good sales which helps their fundraising too.”

The showgrounds are now established at Victoria Park, and the annual show is “one of the state’s best exhibitions”.

THE CFA has launched a new online tool to make it easier for people to clear up around their property by offering advice on clearing vegetation including trees and branches without a permit.

Planning exemptions were introduced in 2011 to reduce red tape for residents wanting to clear up ahead of the bushfire season.

A new two minute video ‘Clear up or clear out’has been released to raise awareness of the rules around vegetation clearing and can now be accessed via the CFA’s Facebook and You Tube pages.

The CFA wants everyone to be aware that in most areas outside of Melbourne a permit is not needed to remove trees within 10 metres of their home and understorey vegetation for up to 30 metres from their home.

CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson said in many communities these rules were not widely known or understood.

Be Prepared

THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is calling on farmers to be vigilant following one of the hottest starts to spring.

With temperatures having already reached about 36 degrees Celsius in much of the state and early bushfire conditions experienced, the VFF is encouraging farmers to ensure they are taking the right precautions with their livestock, finances and personal well-being.

VFF president Peter Tuohey said many farmers have spent the past few weeks cutting their failed crops for hay following unprecedented hot weather.

“This is not at all what farmers, in particular grain growers would have liked,” he said.

“This is now two consecutive seasons in a row which have seen the majority of the crops fail due to extreme weather.”

Mr Tuohey said it was crucial that farmers rallied and supported each other over what will be a long and difficult summer.

“Farmers have a history of helping farmers and I have no doubt that the farm community will support each other during what is expected to be a long, hot and dry summer.

The VFF has been consulting with the

state Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources for the past six months to update the department on current season conditions.

VFF grains group president Brian Hosking said this reinforced the need for both our state and federal government to act fast on drought concessional loans.

“We need the stalemate between the state and federal governments to end on the issue of drought concessional loans, they just need to sort it out and make sure they are available as soon as possible,” Mr Hosking said.

“Political squabbling at a time when growers are struggling serves no purpose.

“For many farmers they may not be the right option, but for some they will be and we need clarity over what is available,” he said.

The VFF is encouraging both the federal and state governments to be prepared in the event of a failed season.

“Our initial focus was on stock watering with most farms in the worst affected parts of the state having near empty dams,” Mr Tuohey said.

“This is why water supply points need to be easily accessible.”

“Clearing vegetation around your home is important to give it the best possible chance of surviving bushfire.

“The more fuel around your home the more the intensity of a fire will increase and the greater the chances that fire will burn into your home,” he said.

Some exceptions exist to Victoria’s rules, primarily for newer homes.

For example, residents in homes built or approved after September 10, 2009 still require a permit to clear any vegetation.

AUSVEG releases new one-stop guide for growers FOLLOWING the positive feedback from last year’s AUSVEG Suppliers Guide, the horticultural body has just released its latest version of the 2015-16 guide.

AUSVEG spokesperson Lauren Winterbottom said that once again Australian vegetable and potato growers will have access to the most up-to-date and relevant guide to suppliers.

Offer quality summer forage to reduce heat stress HEAT stress is one of those subjects that we commonly place in the too-hard-basket and accept as a fact-of-life in Australian grazing based dairy production.

Certainly northern Victoria places more emphasis than southern Victorian dairies because its impacts are far more noticeable.

Recent research has shown that milk production decreases start when the temperature-humidity index exceeds 68 (i.e., temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and 45 per cent humidity).

This dismisses the belief heat stress is not a significant issue in southern Victoria.

The most comfortable temperature for a cow is five degrees Celsius.

In fact, given the choice, a cow would choose five degrees Celsius to anything above that.

The higher the milk production per cow, the greater the impact.

This is because high-producing cows eat more and hence generate more heat from fermenting forage.

The first detrimental effects of heat occur before milk production is compromised - these are all fertility issues – oestrus expression, conception rates and early embryo survival and can start at as low as 13 degrees Celsius.

Milk declines do not usually appear until 48 hours after initial heat stress events.

Older cows are more severely affected, but not all cows respond to heat stress in a similar manner.

Immune function also suffers suppression under heat stress leaving our cow susceptible to common infections like mastitis.

Water intake increases dramatically as a means of dissipating body heat via urine.

The remaining milk drop is due to biological changes that occur in the cow as a result of heat stress – metabolism, responsiveness of various tissues and organs to normally produce hormones.

This does not negate proactive feeding strategies such as feeding more heat producing feeds like silage at night.

Increased respiration rates and panting during heat stress increase maintenance energy requirement by seven per cent to 25 per cent.

This is the same energy for between one and 3.5 litres of milk.

Increased respiration/ pant also reduces rumination time which in turn reduces saliva production and is a threat to rumen and blood pH. We cannot afford to reduce ‘effective fibre’ intake and increase starch (grain) to compensate energy diverted to respiration/panting.

HIGH QUALITY FORAGE: High-producing cows eat more, generating more heat from fermenting forage.

The secret of sustaining high forage intakes is in palatable high-quality/ nutrient dense summer fodder crops.

From our experience, turnips in southern Victoria and sorghum in northern Victoria can produce very significant profit outcomes.

Through our consulting and subsequent monthly ration analysis, up to four dollars per cow variations in milk income over feed cost were recorded between herds grazing four kilograms DM of these crops against just silagebased diets.

Yields per hectare under irrigation of sorghum in northern Victoria last summer well out-stripped irrigated pasture and reduced water usage.

Mineral nutrition has significant implications under heat stress.

Cows’ sweat contains high amounts of potassium and sodium.

Although potassium deficiency in dairy fodders is not usually a limitation to summer lactation ration DCADs due to our passion for K fertilisers, but ensuring adequate

sodium in the form of salt beyond normal grain mix inclusions by offering free-choice salt is a simple answer.

Trace minerals and vitamins are essential through all seasons, but particularly through potential heat stress times of late spring, summer and early autumn.

Trace minerals and vitamins will support immune function also under threat during heat stress, and many metabolic and hormonal functions.

Rumination is the cow’s

‘calling and vocation’.

She is the only creature on earth that can breakdown indigestible fibres converting them to simply carbohydrates and proteins to feed monogastrics (humans being the greatest dependents).

This is the core function and purpose of our dairy business.

Rumination is the greatest heat producer in the cow’s body, but rumination is also the greatest influence in cow health and productivity – a major tension for a significant

part of our annual environmental conditions as the above temperature figures highlight.

Perhaps some discussion on rumination will help us better care for our herds in less than conducive conditions for rumination optimisation, which equates to our success as dairy farmers.

Through a client, I’ve had some access to data produced from rumination/temperature/activity monitoring technology.

The rumination data has been fascinating and

an incredible tool for diagnosing cow problems that we’d never have been aware of from observation (sub-clinical).

Rumination is a function of both diet and rest.

As above, rumination is critical to cow health and production.

Dietary issues we can usually manage reasonably well, but do we allow our cows sufficient rest time?

Reduced rest is reduced rumination.

As herds have grown in size, time spent at the dairy and walking distances have all increased to the detriment of rest time and hence rumination.

I wonder how much of our lameness issues are related to reduced rest/ rumination producing sub-optimal rumen pH/ laminitis let alone reduced feed conversion efficiency.

Heat stressed cows spend considerable time standing to try gaining benefit from heat transfer to air movement, at a cost to rumination.

Our challenge is to offer the highest quality forage during summer to achieve a balance between adequate rumination and minimising excessive heat production from rumination.
