NEIGHBOURING farmers not happy about a new dairy goat farm to open near Geelong are taking their fight to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Concerned farmers say there are many problems with the intensive farming venture, and fear it will negatively impact on their existing farming enterprises. Farmers that will be surrounding the new dairy goat farm in Moorabool are concerned that if Nuchev is allowed to run such an intensive farming operation on “small and inappropriate sized land” it will set a precedent for other companies to simply use other farmers’ land as buffer zones. Moorabool Angus cattle farmer Gerald Knol, who runs his cattle on 75 acres that backs on to the proposed new goat farm site, said there were more than 450 objections to the Nuchev Group
obtaining approval from the Geelong City Council Planning Committee, with another 30 objections lodged against another site proposed at Lara. Mr Knol said the lower number of objections to the Lara site was a result of residents not knowing the company’s or the council’s plans for “their own backyard”. Mr Knol said one of the main areas of concern is the sheer number of goats the company is planning to run on the 100 acres at Moorabool. “They are going to run 14,000 goats on only 100 acres,” he said. “That block of land would normally only support maybe 150 goats at best if farmed traditionally.
