NEIGHBOURING farmers not happy about a new dairy goat farm to open near Geelong are taking their fight to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Concerned farmers say there are many problems with the intensive farming venture, and fear it will negatively impact on their existing farming enterprises.

Farmers that will be surrounding the new dairy goat farm in Moorabool are concerned that if Nuchev is allowed to run such an intensive farming operation on “small and inappropriate sized land” it will set a precedent for other companies to simply use other farmers’ land as buffer zones.

Moorabool Angus cattle farmer Gerald Knol, who runs his cattle on 75 acres that backs on to the proposed new goat farm site, said there were more than 450 objections to the Nuchev Group

obtaining approval from the Geelong City Council Planning Committee, with another 30 objections lodged against another site proposed at Lara.

Mr Knol said the lower number of objections to the Lara site was a result of residents not knowing the company’s or the council’s plans for “their own backyard”.

Mr Knol said one of the main areas of concern is the sheer number of goats the company is planning to run on the 100 acres at Moorabool.

“They are going to run 14,000 goats on only 100 acres,” he said.

“That block of land would normally only support maybe 150 goats at best if farmed traditionally.

Past alumni Australian delegate Laura Grubb said the 2015 Summit was packed with actionable outcomes for all attendees which resulted in a supportive group who continue to collaborate and support each other.

“After entering the workforce earlier this year, I found that YAS was well received by people in the industry and the prestige of this event will only continue to grow,” she said.

“YAS has allowed me to take home many new ideas and initiatives on food security and sustainability and I would encourage all young Aussies who are passionate about feeding a hungry planet to apply,” Ms Grubb added.

The YAS’ long-term goal is to inspire delegates to not just think, but to act, and action is clearly needed to improve young people’s knowledge about agriculture, since many young people are disconnected from farming and give little thought to where their food comes from.

The Youth Agriculture Literacy Study revealed that the overwhelming majority of young people had no idea when crops were ripe or were harvested.

YOUNG Australian leaders in agriculture are invited to join other thought leaders from around the world to attend the third Global Youth Agriculture Summit (YAS) that will take place in Belgium next year.

Against a backdrop of increasing disconnection between young people and farming, and a world population that is forecast to soar to 10 billion by 2050, visionary thinking, a long-term approach, and creativity are urgently needed to develop solutions to enable the next generation of food producers to face global farming challenges.

Bayer together with two Belgian young farmers associations, Groene Kring and Fédération des Jeunes Agriculteurs, are inviting young people to apply to attend the YAS in Brussels, Belgium which will take place on Monday, October 9 to Friday, October 13, 2017.

About 100 young delegates from around the world will share ideas, develop solutions and engage in an open discussion on one of the world’s most challenging questions - How do we feed a hungry planet sustainably?

To apply, young people aged 18 to 25 are asked to submit an essay on the underlying causes of food insecurity and the effect it can have on a growing population.

The essay question is based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Ability to demonstrate original ideas and passion to help shape the future will be the key selection criteria for the YAS. Essay applications will be accepted online and close on January 13, 2017.

“And that size of the block means the property does not have its own buffer zones, so instead the neighbouring land is forced to act as a buffer.

“This also highlights the lack of ability to control biosecurity and quarantine issues.”

Other concerns the farmer explained to The Southern Farmer includes the spread of odour on neighbouring properties, the risk of Q-fever spreading from the property and the impact it will have on people, the risk of diseases to other animals – both domestic, native wildlife and farm animals and the increase of pests, especially mice, flies and mosquitoes.

“There is also the risk of windborne over-spray and dust, as well as contamination of neighbouring crops grown for human consumption,” Mr Knol said.

“There will also be an increase in noise from equipment and animals due to the industrial opening hours from 4am to 11pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

“Not to mention the environmental risks due to water logging and increased salts due to spraying of trade waste water on the remaining land and the run off of contaminated water over neighbouring cropping land and then into fragile ecological creek and river systems.”

Despite the large number of objections lodged to the Geelong City Council Planning Committee, Nuchev’s application was approved to develop the state-of-the-art dairy goat farm.

Nuchev is anAustralian health and nutrition solutions company with a focus on the Australasian market.

The company works with inmarket partners to deliver premium goat milk-based formula and nutritional products to consumers.

Nuchev Group chief executive officer Ben Dingle had previously stated that Nuchev’s board took on the “very valid concerns” people have raised through the company’s own consultation and has taken steps

to ensure that its facilities will meet and exceed community expectations.

In a statement to the Southern Farmer, Nuchev chief financial officer Darryl Lasnitzki said the company will continue to follow the proper process, including any appeals to VCAT. “This includes providing comprehensive application information on the matters raised (by the residents) which were recently assessed and approved by the Environment Protection Authority and the Geelong City Council Planning Committee,” Mr Lasnitzki said.

A group of concerned residents have set up an online petition which also sets out an objection to Nuchev’s other proposed 4500 goat

feedlot and milk processing plant on farm land that has been set up as a buffer zone for the township of Lara.

This feedlot will be less than 1000 metres from the suburban areas of Lara, Lara Lake and the Grand Lakes residential estate.

These residents are arguing that current landowners and ratepayers should not be expected to give up their rights on their own land and if intensive industries want to establish a business they need to acquire enough land to fully accommodate their activity and any buffer zones it may require.

The petition makes reference to an outbreak of Q-fever from dairy goats in the Netherlands in 2007 where at least 30 people died.

Mr Monnier received one of the 23 scholarships that have been awarded for 2017, with his scholarship supported by the Australian Egg Corporation Limited.

The Melbourne-born, father of three is general manager of Mak Eggs which is owned by the Versteden family who have been producing eggs in Drouin for the past 50 years and recently made purchases of farms in Pearcedale and Misty Mountain.

The group have been supplying Australian families’ eggs through the major retailers as a contract producer under other companies brands and its own private label for many years.

The recent acquisition of the two new farms has given the group ownership of about 500,000 birds spread across cage, barn and free range systems.

Mr Monnier said his research will be particularly

pertinent to the inaccurate perception in Australia that better production is only gained at the expense of animal welfare and he plans to help educate consumers on the topic.

“The Australian egg industry is being forced to move away from more intensive farming systems, largely due to the misleading marketing of some fringe groups,” he said.

“Eggs are one of the cheapest forms of protein available and intensive farming systems currently produce about 60 per cent of all Australian eggs.

“Moving away from this system will both dramatically increase the cost of eggs to consumers and jeopardise the industry’s ability to consistently produce throughout the year,” Mr Monnier added.

He has been working closely with the Australian Egg Corporation and the Victoria Farmers Federation on the issue, having recently produced a television programme called ‘The Truth About Eggs’ with the aim of educating consumers.

Nuffield Australia provides opportunities to Australian primary producers

and managers between the ages of 28 and 40 to travel the globe investigating a research topic important to them and Australian agriculture.

The scholars will undertake extensive and diverse agricultural and fisheries research using their $30,000 bursary for a 16-week program of group and individual travel during 2017.

Mr Monnier will travel to the US, Japan, The Netherlands and Canada.

Victorian Nuffield chairman David Drage said with so much variety within the research topics of the Victorian Scholars a diverse range of findings will be presented on their return from their respective global study tours.

Mr Drage said that when Mr Monnier returns from his study tour he will share his insightful findings with other producers and stakeholders in his respective industry and community.

“Using this model, Nuffield Australia continues to build capacity for the nation’s food and fibre industries to be world-leaders in the adoption of the latest and most effective technology, best practice and innovation,” he said.

Chook therapy proving popular for ARTIST, diversional therapist and devout animal lover Sonya Heron has been taking her chickens to local care facilities to put a smile on the faces of the elderly and disabled.

Having worked as a diversional therapist in aged care for 10 years, Ms Heron knew that by introducing her frizzle bantam chickens to residents in the facility she was working in would provide the support, challenge and enhance the psychological, spiritual, social, emotional and physical wellbeing of individuals.

Diversional therapist practitioners work with people of all ages and abilities to design and facilitate leisure and recreation programs.

The therapist provides opportunities where individuals may choose to participate in leisure and recreation activities which promote self-esteem and personal fulfilment.

Ms Heron and partner, Marty Keays live on 11 acres on a “little farm in the Yarra Valley” in Seville East among their menagerie of animals including chickens and roosters, Hungarian Vizslas, horses, a rescued Red Heeler, Miniature Galloway cattle and three cats.

“We were always busy with the dogs having puppies, with us showing the dogs, and with cattle calving and horses to look after and there was just so much going on all the time that I really needed to be at home so I left my job and now go in and visit these facilities taking the chickens with me,” Ms Heron said.

“I still really like doing the diversional therapy work and I had taken my dogs in to use for therapy before.

“I used to run a coffee group from the facility and I took the residents to my farm to see the calves, ponies, puppies and the chickens and they loved it.

“You get a lot of older people who had chickens or lived on a farm or are even retired famers, so it made sense to me to start taking chickens around to the local facilities as they are really easy to carry around,” she said.

Ms Heron started taking her “very tame” chickens into a friend’s facility to see how the residents would respond to the fluffy birds.

FRIZZLE FRIEND: The residents in care facilities experience many benefits from interacting with the chickens.

It proved to be a huge success with the chickens being able to wander around and sit on people’s laps to be petted.

While the chickens interact with the residents, Ms Heron gives them some fun facts and trivia relating to chickens which she said has many residents reminiscing

about a time when they had chickens, particularly the dementia patients.

“Even the other day at a facility the men started talking about when they bred bantams.

“They will then talk about those chickens for the next week.

“The benefits of pets in care

situations are very well documented as being very good for health and wellbeing.

“It really works fabulously particularly if you don’t want animals in a facility full time as it can be quite expensive and time consuming for staff to have to look after.

“The Frizzle bantams are

cross bred and quite small.

“I breed a variety and use the ones that are most friendly.

“I’ve even got one rooster that walks on a lead!”

Out of Ms Heron’s 60 chickens, about half of them are used to visit the facilities after they are trained and hand reared.

Galloways are a very old Scottish breed and are recognised as the oldest polled beef cattle in the world.

The earliest recorded evidence of the breed in Australia is 1858.

Galloways, with their unique double coat of hair, can be Black, Dun or Red in colour in each of the three types â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Galloway, Belted Galloway and White Galloway (all referred to as Galloways).

Miniature Galloways have all the characteristics and qualities of Galloways, only offering

LAURENCE Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Toole from Doncaster has won the Grand Aggregate Trophy at the 2016 Royal Melbourne Show Woodchop Championships for the second year in a row.

The champion woodchopper claimed the coveted Golden Axe after placing ďŹ rst in more than 20 events throughout the nine-day competition.

Mr Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Toole, who is the current world champion in underhand and standing divisions, is a third generation member of the successful woodchop family, which has dominated woodchopping in Victoria for the past 60 years.

Conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), the Woodchop Championships see axemen and women compete in a number of events including tree felling, axe throwing, chainsaw racing, standing block and underhand.

RASV chief executive ofďŹ cer Mark Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Sullivan said the 2016 competition showcased the world-class standard of woodchop competitors in Australia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Royal Melbourne Show Woodchop Championships continue to showcase the incredible strength and skills of Australian competitors,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We congratulate Laurence not only on his win at the 2016 Royal Melbourne Show, but on

Meanwhile, Katie Anderson from Yarroweyah was awarded the coveted Dairy Youth Travel Scholarship.

The 18-year old is provided with a $10,000 travel bursary to visit dairy regions in Asia, New Zealand and the US. The scholarship application process includes pre-show elements of an essay and panel interview, as well as competing in either the All Breeds Elite Dairy Heifer Show or the Dairy Youth Handlers Classic.

The scholarship gives an emerging dairy industry leader the opportunity to gain insight into global agricultural and food industries.

Ms Anderson has grown up on her familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sun Vale Holstein and Red Holstein stud and she has had considerable success competing at International Dairy Week, regional shows and Royal Shows across Australia.

She was awarded the titles of Supreme Champion Parader and Senior Champion Parader in the Dairy Youth Handlers Classic at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Royal Melbourne Show.

THIS year’s Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society (BAPS) spring show turns 150 with celebrations set to be big when November hits.

BAPS president Kerri Gallagher said the three days of the show will be all about celebrating agriculture and community “in a big way”.

“We want people to come to the show and enjoy the rides and see the animals and maybe enjoy a show bag or three, but that’s not all,” she said.

“We want to showcase all that is amazing about agriculture and bridge the gap between farm and city.

“Education, information and fun is the key,” Ms Gallagher said.

Patrons will see more than 300 displays and attractions from the historical including vintage engines, displays and working Clydesdales and the free Brophy Bros Circus as well as the modern including a very popular and free youth pavilion with activities and entertainment just for kids.

Another much enjoyed area is the craft and cooking pavilions, with locals competing for the title of best slice and cake, winning a prize for art and photography or entering knitting, crochet and sewing.

“We have many classes for children of all ages to enter and it’s exciting to see your work on display, hopefully with a blue ribbon attached,” Ms Gallagher added.

THE founder and captain of the first Chinese Australian Rules footy competition in China is calling on the Australian dairy industry to get behind supplying milk to Chinese middle school footy teams.

Darrell Egan said Australia should be doing everything it can to access higher prices for struggling dairy farmers and he has come up with a very unique way to do just that.

Mr Egan lived in Macau and southern China for three years where he established the Dongguan Blues football team.

“In 2011, my wife and I were buying one litre of milk for $3 Australian,” he said.

“If there is a higher price for milk in China we should take every promotional opportunity to push Australian dairy in the market and Aussie farmers should get a fair deal from this price.

“It would be great if processors and Dairy Australia could get behind this and see the merits of our plan and assist with sponsorship.

“It would also help if the dairy farming community could lobby for it.”

Captain and coach of the Dongguan Blues ‘Leighton’ Lin Honghui is currently in Melbourne to learn about the game of Australian Rules and said that he has grown strong on Australian dairy, putting on five kilograms of muscle in his first five weeks of playing football for the Blackburn-based Whitehorse Pioneers.

He is also undertaking Auskick sessions and visiting schools in the Whitehorse area hoping to inspire young Chinese people to take up the sport.

“These are things participation in a sport like Australian Rules football can bring.

“We hope the same values which Australia prides itself on to the rest of the world can be shown to Australian dairy farmers.”

Photo competition proves popular

JUNIOR HANDLERS: Students from Mount Lilydale Mercy College celebrate their first place in last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Royal Melbourne Show for their Boer goats.

College students to showcase their animals and skills FOR the past few years the students at Mount Lilydale Mercy College have been honing their love of animals and agriculture by participating in the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s young farmers club at lunchtimes on a Friday.

Meeting at the school farm, the students have access to a range of activities in the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mixed orchard, vineyard, winery, poultry pens, vegetable gardens, plastic house and goat paddocks.

Students from years seven to 12 come together to share their love of farming and gain skills in the club.

Centred on the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s small flock of Boer goats, the students have many amazing opportunities including the option of taking this passion to the classroom with agriculture offered as a subject from years nine to 12.

Some of the young farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; recent accomplishments include winning a bronze medal at the Eltham Wine Show for their 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon wine, first places in both the Royal Melbourne and Lilydale shows for their Boar goats, novice handler award at the Stud Beef Victoria cattle handlers camp in Bendigo and champion junior handler (goats)- at the Royal Melbourne Show, Lilydale Show and runner up at the Seymour Show.

The students have also been on overnight camps to the University of Melbourne Dookie Campus and RSIT Agricultural training centre in Hamilton, while visiting local wineries, sheep properties, orchards and berry farms.

The school is now keen to

get involved with local farmers and suppliers at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wandin Silvan Field Days as they take on their first exhibit with support from Rural Fence and Trade.

The students will showcase their skills by demonstrating a range of fencing equipment as well as running a pet show on the Saturday.

This show is open to all children under the age of 18, with a parent or guardian present, with contestants bringing along their own pets to be judged by Jan West from Deakin University and Eloise Deen from Wandin Vet Clinic.

The pet show is not exclusive for dogs and cats with some of the awards on offer for the most unusual, smallest and best type.

Green Edge Contracting Pty Ltd was established in 2012 by Christian Peterson.

His focus has always been on providing prestigious services to property owners with jobs unable to be achieved with conventional machinery.

Mr Peterson said that many of his clients have had “unfavourable experiences” with other excavators that tear up driveways and lawns while his particular equipment only leaves minor depressions.

“We do a lot of dam clean outs and expansions, from within the dam itself,” he explained.

“We use site dumpers (an offroad dump truck with balloon tyres) moving dam waste to another spot on the property, leaving everything nice and tidy.

“We also do a lot of mulching in hard to reach places.

“Our mulching heads are attached to the boom of the machine and mulch vegetation down to ground level, leaving mulch evenly spread on the ground,” Mr Peterson said.

He added that he often gets strange looks from people when he is loading the machinery off the trucks with people referring to

the equipment as “transformers” or “moon walkers”, however, in Europe the machines are known as spider excavators.

“They unfold to step over fences and walls and we can work in up to 1.8 metres of water or mud, reaching eight metres high.

“But one of the most impressive things is it can lift more than six tons, which is impressive for a machine that weighs just over 10 ton,” he said.

About 90 per cent of the company’s work is to private clients via word of mouth.

Green Edge Contracting undertakes work for small holdings, hobby farms, Bed and Breakfasts and wineries.

“People are really happy with the

results and tell their friends,” Mr Peterson said.

“We get a lot of business that way and people are impressed with the productivity.

“We’re working straight away no need to set up work areas like standard machines.

“We run biodegradable hydraulic oil and grease, which is a plus with a lot of our clients because of the minor footprint we leave behind - tyre depressions instead of ruts churned up by tracks,” he added.

Celebrations to be held for River Health Incentives Program

IMPROVED WATERWAYS: Since the RHIP began, more than 12,000 projects to the value of $45 million have been facilitated.

The program promotes community participation by collaboratively developing landholder skills and increasing their knowledge about the land, environment and adjoining waterways.

It shares costs and effort with the recipients, many who have been in the program for a number of years.

MELBOURNE Water’s River Health Incentives Program (RHIP) is about to mark its 21st birthday and to celebrate the milestone an awards and recognition night will be held on Wednesday, November 23.

The RHIP awards recognise and celebrate the dedication and passion of the program’s participants who have contributed to ongoing weed control, vegetation management, the planting of more than 3 million plants and the instalment of 1512 kilometres of fencing along waterways.

The RHIP provides financial and technical assistance to landowners, local government, Parks Victoria and community groups to help them improve the condition of our waterways.

It consists of four different program types suited to different landholders to deliver different waterway health outcomes including stream

Wandin Seville Community Bank is committed to supporting youth through various initiatives, including its annual scholarship program.

Each year scholarships are awarded to full-time, first year undergraduates studying at an Australian university or

The scholarship program makes a significant difference to hard working and talented students by helping them cover some of the costs of living and studying at university.

In 2015, 2016/2017 Jack Cornish was awarded a two-year scholarship and he is currently studying at RMIT University undertaking a software engineering course.

The Wandin Seville Community Bank is now looking for a recipient for its 2017 program.

The community bank was formed when the Wandin and Seville townships found out they were to have both local banks closed by two separate major banks.

Naturally, people and local traders were very concerned what this would mean to the towns.

This was when the idea of a Bendigo branch of a community bank was formed.

A group of interested community members was briefed by Bendigo Bank back in February 2001 to establish Wandin Seville Community Bank branch and a committee

was formed to evaluate the proposal.

The results of a feasibility study were presented to the committee and it was unanimously voted to proceed towards the establishment of the first Wandin Seville Community Bank branch.

The Wandin branch was officially opened by Bendigo Bank chairman Richard Guy on May 29, 2002.

The community bank branch is operated by a public company called Wandin Seville Financial Services Ltd, which has

become a successful part of the local community and has given back to local organisations through monetary support for special projects, equipment, apparel, education needs and much more.

It has reached more than $135 million in funds under management and has been able to pay out substantial dividends to shareholders in recent years.

Weedwakka helps avoid the frustration of dealing with weeds

FIELD DAY STAND: David Thorne proudly displays his Weedwakka at many of the field days taking place around Victoria.

WHETHER you are farming, contracting or clearing the back yard, a specialised cutting attachment for your brushcutter has been designed to eliminate the frustration of using nylon cord and conventional steel blades.

David Thorne has developed and manufactured the Weedwakka, designed for heavy vegetation such as blackberry and said the attachment’s hardened steel blades will cut anything from grass to thumb thickness woody weeds without ever needing sharpening.

“If the blades strike a rock they are able to deflect, greatly reducing the kick back, and

minimising stress on the brushcutter,” he said.

“This makes the Weedwakka Heavy Duty ideal for clearing scrub in rocky country.”

There are two models of Weedwakka – the Weedwakka Heavy Duty and the Weedwakka MultiCut. The Weedwakka MultiCut has flexible nylon blades that cut cleanly through much heavier vegetation than nylon cord will handle.

The blades are clearly visible when rotating, and can be used around trees without damaging the bark.

The MultiCut is ideal for cutting along paths, walls and

netting fences, as it eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord.

When the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools.

Both Weedwakka models are designed for straight shaft brushcutters, and are easily attached in exactly the same way as a conventional steel blade.

The Weedwakka complies with Australian Standard AS35751995 and meets Work Cover requirements.

Multi-vendor Corriedale sale to take place THE annual blue ribbon, multi-vendor Corriedale sale has been gaining momentum over the years with this year’s sale taking place at Milton and Tracey Savage’s ‘Gambier View’ property in Derrinallum.

The other two studs participating in this year’s sale are ‘Fairburn’owned by Darryl and Jan MacDonald and ‘Loddon Park’ owned by Shane and Amber Baker.

The MacDonalds’ Fairburn Stud is situated on the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range near Daylesford; with the family having a strong tradition of breeding Corriedales for more than 110 years.

The aim of the stud is to produce soft handling wool (26 to 28 micron) on correctly conformed sheep with dark feet.

Fairburn rams always create interest due to their trueness to type and ability to perform.

Since 2004, the entire flock has been Gudair vaccinated and brucellosis accredited.

Since 1966 the Bakers’ Loddon Park stud has been handed down through the generations starting from Ed, to son, Peter, and now grandson Shane together with his wife Amber.

Their aim has always been to breed a true self replacing, dual purpose sheep that will prosper under all conditions.

The stud’s focus has been on lambing percentages, true Corriedale wool and muscling.

Loddon Park has been Gudair vaccinated since 2004 and is Brucellosis accredited (Vic certificate 2008).

Milton and Tracey Savage of ‘Gambier View’ and ‘Compton House’ believe that a Corriedale is a dual purpose sheep, therefore they place equal amounts of emphasis on meat and wool.

“When selecting sheep the first priority is that structurally the sheep has an excellent, sound conformation that stands on good black feet,” Mr Savage explained.

“Then we select for a wellmuscled sheep that has a lot of soft, lustrous wool.

“Most of the rams have good open heads, but we have not lost wool cuts, as our well-wooled bellies will indicate,” he said.

WildDogScan is one element of the FeralScan program allowing users to record information in their local area for 12 invasive animal species.

FeralScan project manager Peter West said the app is to be used for local community members planning control efforts and to help them decide on the best course of action.

“Peter West has made a real impact by visiting and teaching community and landholder groups how to use the programme.

“It’s a positive move to have an online tutorial everyone can access, at any time,” Mr Power added.

WildDogScan is a landholder, community, industry, research and government collaboration led by the Invasive Animal Cooperative Research Centre and NSW Department of Primary Industries.

Interstate studs dominate Royal Show

By DAVID RIZZOLI INTERSTATE stud sheep producers from South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania took out top honours at this year’s final interbreed sheep judging at the Royal Melbourne Show.

The Allendale Suffolk Stud of A.E Day and Sons from Bordertown, SA stood the All Breeds Interbreed Ram, with James Frost from Bannister, via Goulburn taking Reserve Champion with a Poll Dorset ram.

The Interbreed Champion Ewe went to the Border Leicester ewe from Jeff Sutto at Wattle Farm Temora, NSW, with the ewe from Deva Weitman’s Blur Rock Suffolk Stud at Romsey.

The Interbreed Champion Sires Progeny went to the Suffolk from A.E Day and Sons, with the Interbreed Breeders Group going to the Poll Dorsets of James Frost.

Victoria’s only other success in the Interbreeds came when the Ireland family’s Southdown Stud at Bunding took the honours in the Ram Trifecta.

ACCORDING to the team at AgMin many mineral deficiencies in livestock are not noticed until after a prolonged period of underfeeding has occurred.

Although it may take time for clinical symptoms of a mineral deficiency to appear, subclinical deficiencies (Hidden Hunger) may have been impairing optimum performance for quite some time, but regular laboratory testing can identify these problems before it is too late.

mance does not meet the farmer’s expectations, particularly when animal growth rates do not meet target weights, when livestock have a low resistance to parasites causing production levels of wool or milk to drop, or when reproductive performance of mature animals is poor, mineral deficiencies are frequently suspected to be causing the problems.

“Therefore, it is important to provide livestock with highly absorptive minerals in a protected form, which are rapidly utilised by the rumen microflora, but not converted into an unavailable form in the rumen.

“Also it is important not to wait for the time when productivity is reduced and thus, loss of profit to the farmer has already occurred,” Mr Ludvig said.

So how can you tell if mineral requirements are not being met or are not properly balanced?

Mr Ludvig said that generally, problems will first be observed in the areas of nutrition-related symptoms of animal health and reproduction.

Monitor sheep closely as spring is blowfly season

FLYSTRIKE SEASON: Flystrike can occur in sheep from spring through summer to autumn.

Spring shorn sheep are not as susceptible to flystrike due to their short wool cover, but as the wool grows may require crutching in autumn.

Earlier shorn sheep, particularly autumn shorn, will almost certainly require crutching as spring approaches.

Body wrinkles in Merino sheep came about around 1900 with the introduction of the Vermont strain resulting in wrinkling in these sheep particularly around the crutch and upper hind legs.

Urine and faeces accumulate in these wrinkles setting up ideal conditions for the primary blowfly to lay its eggs.

In the late 1920s, South Australian J.H.W. Mules developed the mules operation in which wrinkled skin from the upper leg and around the crutch is cut away resulting, as the wound heals, in an area of bare skin around the crutch.

In recent years many ram breeders are selecting for rams with naturally occurring bare areas.

Much controversy has arisen over the mules operation, with animal rights groups calling for its abolition and a number of wool buyers paying a bonus for wool from unmulsed sheep.

However, without legislation banning the practice it is likely to remain as long as wrinkles remain on sheep, particularly Merinos.

Prevention of fly strike can

also be attempted by jetting in which a long acting repellent is applied at pressure to the crutch region.

Treatment of flystruck sheep begins by shearing away the wool from the affected area and creating a five centimetre buffer of shorn clean wool around the struck area.

Liberal applications of flystrike powder or liquid are then applied to the whole affected area.

Most chemicals used in controlling blowflies are also effective in controlling lice in sheep.

These fall into seven main groups including: Organophosphates (OPs) that operate by interfering with nerve signal transmission (classed as high human health risk, low in raw wool residue).

Synthetic pyrethroids (SPs) that over excite the insect’s nervous system causing paralysis (medium in human health risk, high in long wool raw wool residue).

Insect growth regulators (IGRs) that prevent an insect from reaching maturity by interfering with the moulting process (low in human health risk, medium in long wool raw wool residue).

Macrocyclic lactones (MLs) that block nerve signals (low in human health risk, medium in long wool raw wool residue).

LUCILIA cuprina is a name that rolls easily off the tongue.

It is also the name of a scourge that has been with the Australian sheep industry for more than 100 years costing millions of dollars each year in prevention and treatment.

Lucilia cuprina or as it is more commonly called, the primary green blowfly, is responsible for establishing the conditions which attract other blowflies, including the large brown blowfly, the lesser brown blowfly and a number of other secondary and small blowflies.

Types of flystrike include breech strike caused when the wool around the crutch is moistened by urine or faeces, body strike from shearing cuts or other wounds and pizzle strike in wethers and rams from urine stain around the sheath.

Head strike, mainly in rams through fighting, may also occur although this is becoming less of a problem as wool producers select and breed for polling in otherwise horned animals.

The primary fly is attracted by the presence of moisture and ‘scalding’ or inflamed skin, laying eggs which hatch in two to eight days with the maggots eating the skin and causing further staining with their excretions attracting the secondary blowflies.

Lucilia cuprina survives winter as post-feeding larvae or pre-pupae in the soil.

These flies feed on the damaged skin and their excretions cause an ever expanding moist area and inflamed skin.

As the infestation spreads, it is not long before the wool on the affected area drops away leaving ugly areas of black skin and flesh.

If not treated early in the infestation, gangrene can set in and death can follow through septicaemia.

Flystrike can occur from spring through summer to autumn.

Warm moist conditions in spring, and to a lesser extent in autumn, favour the flies but the hot dry and sometimes windy conditions of summer see a reduction of flystrike.

For all these chemical groups the brand name is on the labels of the containers (for example, Diazinon) and the user should select the one that he/she considers best suits their operation.

Chemical residues in wool can threaten access to some markets, for example, European processors.

We can plan the nutrient quality of our silage By JOHN LYNE Dairytech dairy production specialist Straw from the 2015/2016 harvest has tested very high for energy, with the test revealing very high sugars.

We know from experience, drought stricken wheat crops taken off as hay also yield very high in sugars and often lift milk production when fed.

Unfortunately, there is a major drawback of both these drought hays: wastage.

They are very brittle and breakdown to small pieces facilitating high wastage – 50 per cent and greater.

Given a year like 2016 and the late start and demand for hay driving prices upward, even these drought hays reached $300/tonne.

With 50 per cent wastage, consumed hay cost $660/tonne dry matter – very expensive feed; well in excess of grain cost, and well below a grain mix for protein.

A friend made the recent comment (although general, but it does bare truth) “The Australian dairy industry has not been driven by profitable milk production, but land investment and inflation”.

Apart from a few strategic

areas (close proximity to Melbourne) dairy land has not inflated for several years.

We must now turn to making profit from converting feed to milk.

Feed cost/litre is an obvious determinant of profit within the context of converting feed dollars to milk dollars.

Interestingly, the higher the quality (digestibility) the lower the feed cost/litre, and worse, the higher the quality feed (silage in this case) the higher the milk production and the gap in income over feed cost widens rapidly.

Digestibility, after palatability, becomes a major issue and is determined by plant maturity.

Digestibility falls away rapidly as plants mature.

This is half the story; the

other is adequate silage reserves as addressed in August’s feed budget article.

This past summer has left many farms naked on feed reserves and the cost multiplied by wastage of bought-in hay, has only added insult to milk price injury.

We must change our farming systems as this is the third milk price crash in seven years.

Silage reserves produced in better season/milk price years are lower cost and will at least soften the impact of the next milk price dilemma.

Summarising both August and September’s articles, increasing forage production per hectare and ensuring we harvest highly digestible grasses, forage crops, either grazed (turnip/sorghum) or ensiled is

paramount to a viable future.

In real terms, milk price has been falling for many years; our only strategy to counter this is increased productivity - more tonnes of dry matter per hectare and from quality/digestible feeds, more litres per cow.

There are two significant issues with silage that too often ‘pass under the radar’.

Shrinkage – Do tonnes of dry matter ensiled match tonnes of dry matter fed out?

Obviously handling silage at feed out can impact this equation.

Initially from a ‘wastage’ factor in handling (spillage etc) but then wastage due to secondary fermentation.

This occurs when silage is fed out well before cows will have access to it.

Secondary fermentation starts immediately silage is exposed to oxygen, and is always a butyric acid fermentation which renders silage very unpalatable, which equates to wastage.

Shrinkage is also promoted at the other end of the silage operation when ensiling.

Baled silage should be wrapped as rapidly as possible - within four hours in cool overcast conditions, and two hours in sunny conditions.

Both are aimed at minimising unwanted bacterial activity.

Oxygen is always silage’s greatest enemy.

Pit/stack silage’s greatest threat is lack of compaction causing the same problem of expelling/limiting oxygen.

From there, once wrapped/ covered controlling the type of fermentation that occurs is critical.

The use of a quality lactic acid producing bacterial inoculant will lower pH rapidly and bring all bacterial activity to a halt.

Lactic acid fermentation is very palatable; alternate bacterial fermentations do not reach stable pH so ongoing breakdown of fibre will reduce tonnes of silage fed out.

The second issue, which seems to be increasing, is mycotoxins in feed, particularly silage.

Mycotoxins are climatedependent with plant and storage associated problems.

Prevention is by far the best option.

Again, inoculating silage with a quality lactic acid bacterial inoculant is the most appropriate action we can take at ensiling.

We cannot control climate -related causes, but can minimise their impact with quality inoculant (low pH = no microbial activity).

From the perspective of silage nutrient value, research shows dry/droughty conditions produce the highest quality silage.

Certainly tonnage is important as feed budgets must be met, but will never surpass energy/protein/kg DM or digestibility.

Winemakers have been aware of the benefits to wine quality from stressed vines for many years.

In fact, they will deliberately stress vines, knowing full well it will reduce yield, but produce a far better quality wine with potential for higher price.

No dairy farmer would dream of stressing pastures for higher nutrient silage even if we could.

Nevertheless, the lesson stands.

Whatever this coming spring delivers, with this knowledge we can plan, given knowledge of our silage nutrient quality.

This becomes valuable information to ration balancing.

HIGH YIELDING: Maize grower Adam Whipp said people are now chasing Corson Maize Z71-F1 to boost their bottom line.

New maize silage hybrid delivers exceptional yield for dairy farmers A NEW range of maize seed silage has been released that can help farmers boost their productivity and profitability.

The new addition to the PGG Wrightson Seeds’Corson Maize Seed silage range, Z71-F1, is producing exceptional yields, particularly for dairy farmers.

Maize grower Adam Whipp said people are now chasing Corson Maize Z71-F1 because it brings a wider harvest window, greater yield and higher profit.

“Corson Maize Z71-F1 interested me because it promised above average early-growth, a tall and bulky plant with large cobs, as well as superior stay green attributes…and it delivered,” he said.

Yields from the Corson Maize Z71-F1 were about 25 tonne/ha; an extra five tonne/ ha increase from the traditional maize varieties on Mr Whipp’s farm.

“That extra five tonne a hectare makes a big difference in terms of profit,” he added.

Located in the heart of dairy country at Nanneella, near Shepparton, Adam Whipp runs a 100ha property where maize

is a big part of his annual crop rotation.

“Generally, I’ll grow shaftal clover for the winter from April to November, then I’ll sow maize at the end of November.”

However, increasing water costs and reduced allocations left Mr Whipp searching for a higher yielding maize silage that could offset this increasing cost.

Working with his local agronomist, he initially sowed Corson Maize Z71-F1 as a “trial” but said it performed that well he has made it a permanent part of his crop rotation system.

“The Corson Maize Z71-F1 grew a metre taller than the other variety of maize I normally grow and has 11 to 12 leaves on the plant above the corn cob, compared to the standard variety which has about six leaves above the corn cob.

“It also has a stay green gene in it and it does stay greener, so when you go to chop it, it doesn’t dry off like the other varieties.

“The other varieties go brown very quick but this one hung on pretty well,” Mr Whipp explained.

In preparation for planting, he first cut the shaftal hay, then ran over the area with a disc plough, before pre-irrigating, adding a broadcast based fertiliser and incorporating it with a grader board.

Five days later, he planted the Corson Maize Z71-F1 at 85,000 seeds/ha to a depth of 2.5 inches, and also added 50 litres/ha of liquid starter fertiliser.

Mr Whipp said for this crop he used about seven megalitres/ ha of water through the growing period and deployed 300 litres/ ha of liquid fertiliser that he applied with a water applicator so that it “dribbled into the irrigation channel and gave the soil a nitrogen boost”.

“Corson Maize Z71-F1 is at least 10 per cent better than the other varieties I have grown.

“I would definitely recommend Corson Maize Z71-F1 to other growers and to dairy farmers as a quality supplement to their pasture-based systems,” he said.

Feed testing on the Corson Maize Z71-F1 also showed good nutrition results, especially the starch levels.

ORGANISERS of the rural recycling program drumMUSTER are calling on Victorian farmers to bring in their empty chemical drums to help the environment. drumMUSTER national program manager Allan McGann said that with the recent significant rainfall farmers can expect excellent crop yields and with plenty of feed for livestock producers there should also be an increase in hay production across the region.

“With the rainfall there are reports of increased fungicide

spraying activity, which in turn sees an increase in containers requiring proper disposal,” he said.

“Following the spraying period and before harvest, it would be a good time to clean up the farms and deliver all eligible cleaned containers to the various collection sites across the region.

“A lot of farmers have been active in delivering their drums in, but there are still others that have not recognised the benefits of the drumMUSTER program,” Mr McGann added.

All eligible containers have a small levy applied that allows the containers to be accepted at the collection sites at no additional cost.

Since 1999, drumMUSTER has collected more than 28 million drums nation-wide, representing more than 28,000 tonnes of waste avoiding landfill and being recycled.

Identifying Serrated Tussock is the first step to controlling the invasive weed ACCORDING to Hamish Munro from Granular Products the invasive weed Serrated Tussock manages to compete strongly against Australia’s natives and over introduced pasture species, reducing any pastures productivity potential.

Serrated Tussock is generally located in a large pocket north west of Melbourne (around Geelong, Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury to the Hume Highway) but there are also several other locations across Victoria that have patches of the invasive tussock grass.

It (Nassella Trichotoma) is predominately located in tablelands and ridge-type country that is generally non-arable and has lower soil fertility, but it usually does not grow in the wet, low-lying areas of arable, higher productivity paddocks.

Mr Munro said the invasive grass has a prolific seeding nature - adult plants can produce 80,000 to 100,000 seeds each year that can remain viable in the soil for up to 10 years.

“Serrated Tussock is a perennial tussock grass, which has a large crown and fibrous root system and during flowering and seed set the plant has a light purple to white weeping appearance,” Mr Munro explained.

“A key point of identification is when the outer leaf is separated or pulled away, a small white ligule - approximately 1mm long - can clearly be seen.

“It also has a high cellulose content, retaining a green colouring well into dry spells and makes digestion and palatability very low,” he added.

Mr Munro said that Granular Products has assisted control of large sections of Serrated Tussock in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania with GP Flupropanate using hand and ground rig solutions.

YAC was originally pushed back due to the drawn out election and uncertainty with relevant government departments involved in the event.

YAC is an open forum for young people in agriculture to communicate their aspirations for policy change directly to the Federal Government.

FFN then champions the actions from the YAC, keeping its community up to date on policy progress.

FFN chair Dan Korff said the event is the time young people have their voice heard.

“Some pasture species are more susceptible to the chemistry than others and a qualified agronomist is recommended to select application rates, specific to your property and expectation.”

Mr Munro said that managing Serrated Tussock requires a long-term management plan involving a combination of approaches.

“Chemistry alone will provide control of the current weeds and seeds, however, it is more effective if pasture composition, soil nutrition and grazing practices are considered and implemented.

“There is a constant pressure of seedling germinations trying to find bare and less competitive areas to establish new plants within the landscape.

“A couple of outlying plants left for a couple of years can quickly turn into a long-term and expensive issue to combat,” Mr Munro said.

New wheat varieties for Victorian growers TWO new wheat varieties for Victorian growers are currently being bulked up on farms to be ready for purchase and sowing next season.

Australian wheat breeding company LongReach Plant Breeders (LRPB) has revealed the new varieties - LRPB110140 and Arrow.

LRPB11-0140 is a high yielding, dual-purpose wheat variety suited to all areas that grow Wedgetail.

It is a long season type with an Australian Hard (AH) rating in Victoria.

Arrow is a high yielding AH variety with mid-maturity and a short canopy that is focused on producing grain rather than extra straw.

Agronomic and vegetable seed company Advanta Seeds’ wheat technical manager Colin Edmondson said the new releases will provide growers with options that work better on-farm.

“With every new release we aim to build on our record of consistent field performance with high strike rates for grain receival specifications, and sought-after quality classifications,” he said.

Mr Edmondson said LRPB11-0140 (which is yet to be named) contained three winter genes so it is suited to early planting similar to how growers use Wedgetail.

It also offers improved

for screenings, even in the tight 2015 finish when it had lower screenings than Mace.”

He said test weights are similar to reliable lines such as Corack and Mace.

Sprouting tolerance is an improvement over Wyalkatchem and looks similar to Trojan, while Black Point tolerance is good.

Mr Edmondson said Arrow is mid-maturity with heading time being between Mace and Trojan.

“Arrow shows a good tillering ability that fills space laterally early in the season, with a compact plant type that is comparable to Cobra in plant structure.

“As maturity, Arrow is similar height to Wyalkatchem and Derrimut with the short erect habit being a standout feature.

“The canopy structure suits direct drilling and stubble retention systems,” he said.

Arrow is suitable for a wheat-on-wheat rotation phase with very good yellow leaf spot resistance.

Arrow is susceptible to strip rust and will require some form of chemical protection to maximise performance, especially in the cooler winter period.

It has solid resistance to stem rust, but is susceptible to leaf rust.

“Arrow has performed very well in main season LongReach and NVT trials with similar yield and yield stability to Mace.
