Not only does Daniel believe that regenerative farming can arrest global warming on a local scale, he also believes that the system makes good business sense and encourages other farmers to explore it.

Four years ago, Daniel Kelton and his partner, Aldona Baranowski moved to Alexandra from Sydney.

Daniel had grown up in country New South Wales, in the central west.

His family was of a diverse background with Aboriginal, English and Irish ancestors, and an intriguing history in lighthouse keeping, stock work and orchards.

Daniel’s father was a jack-ofall trades who spent a significant part of his life as a shearer in New South Wales and Western Australia.

His mother was from a farming family who would buy stock from Queensland and drove it down to New South Wales, farming on the roads as they didn’t own their own farm.

Daniel’s own childhood was one of shearing and hay carting.

Aldona had grown up in the Blue Mountains.

Her parents were Polish immigrants and had been born in a displaced persons camp in Poland, before moving to Australia.

Self-sufficient they lived in a then-rural part of Western Sydney, with the Blue Mountains’ bush becoming Aldona’s playground.

working as the bushwalking guide on a hike that Aldona took. <HDUV ODWHU WKH\ ZRXOG o QG themselves in Sydney with a young family, but with a yearning to get out of the city.

Daniel applied for numerous jobs, and it was a job as an outdoor education teacher at the Rubicon Outdoor Centre that tempted the Keltons south.

Knowing nothing about Alexandra and little about Victoria, the family took a leap of faith and relocated.

Holistic Pastoral was born out of the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s belief in only eating meat that they had produced and killed themselves.

The interest generated from their endeavours rapidly turned into an enterprise as others wanted to

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We fence, we repair dams and we give people meat.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We feed the community with meat that we produce, and we look after the lands that are not being used.â&#x20AC;?

Daniel explains that though the set-up costs are minimal, and that they have no bank debt, the enterprise itself is labour intensive and time consuming.

The family graze their Wiltipoll Dorper sheep in a cell, secured by portable electric fencing designed for rotational grazing.

The size of the cell is dictated by stock numbers and the amount of available feed, however Holistic Pastoral often opts to run 100 sheep in a 50 by 50 metre square as a rule of thumb. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not much grass in the area so we move the sheep every day and the results have been amazing,â&#x20AC;? said Daniel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The sheep take the top part grass, they manure the ground, they take care of your weed problem because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trained to eat everything inside the cell, and the passon effects have been incredible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The sheep are not eating next to where they shit the day before,

breaking pathogen cycles, and all of a sudden we can run an organic system, with no drenching or foot troubles.â&#x20AC;?

The land itself has also seen a complete transformation, with the family only grazing when the grass is ready.

The grass needs to go through a full cycle, and Daniel waits until the grass has a couple of dead leaves on it before re-introducing the stock. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When the grass is high the animals trample it feeding the soil, the fungus, the worms, the bacteria, and ultimately converting the grass into soil carbon,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For pastures depleted by overgrazing, we are returning food and carbon to the soil.â&#x20AC;?

Daniel sees grazing a pasture too soon as the biggest challenge for farming. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Issues with stock density or grazing a piece of land for too long FDQ EH UHFWLo HG y 'DQLHO VDLG â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the length of the grass and the depth of the roots that is crucial. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To combat global warming we need full length pasture pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and putting it back into the soil.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;And when a pasture is left to rest itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing what comes up from dormant seed stocks in the ground.â&#x20AC;?

As an integral part of their grazing management the Keltons run meat chickens after the sheep.

Commonly known as Broilers, the chickens are purchased as day-old chicks and housed in a handmade brooder before being released into the paddock at roughly three weeks old, depending on the season.

Protected by an electric mesh fence and able to roost in a speFLo FDOO\ GHVLJQHG HQFORVXUH WKH chickens are free-range until 10 weeks of age when they are sent to the abbatoir.

Commercial chickens raised in VKHGV DUH SURFHVVHG DW o YH ZHHNV of age, however Holistic Pastoral believe in growing their chickens out to 10 weeks.

Holistic Pastoral processes 100 chickens a month, and sell out every time.

The chickens are sent to an abbatoir in Keysborough which is the only abbatoir in the state that accepts poultry from small time farmers.

Daniel and Aldona also run cattle

in their rotational grazing model.

Initially they started with 20 head of cattle, bought as poddy calves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We took whatever we could o QG y 'DQLHO VDLG â&#x20AC;&#x153;A fair few dairy breeds, Red Angus, Square Meaters...they all shit on the ground, they all eat grass, they all convert into beef.â&#x20AC;?

This year however they did bring in some breeders, four Jersey house cows with heifer calves at foot, which they use for milk as well.

The decision to run Jerseys was based on the desire for a smaller PRUH HIo FLHQW FRZ WKDW ZRXOG LP pact the environment less, and was also light in colour as the paddocks the family use sometimes donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have shade.

The temperament of Jerseys was also a huge consideration. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our system quietens down the animals,â&#x20AC;? said Daniel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However if we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t move them around and work them, they become hard work and a liability. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And if we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t train them to our fences then we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t keep them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We found Jerseys work perfectly in our system.â&#x20AC;?

Staying true to their system and ideals is the main consideration

for the Daniel and Aldona,and has determined the direction in which Holistic Pastoral has grown.

They plan their grazing for a year ahead, to ensure that they have grass all year round.

Should they get it wrong or the season throws them a curly one they de-stock.

Everything has been considered and factored in, so that Holistic 3DVWRUDO QHYHU o JKWV WKH V\VWHP they always work within it and ideally complement it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to grow big, we want to stay small and stay local,â&#x20AC;?

Daniel said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And we set our own prices, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not at the mercy of the market. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re producing food, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re pretty small but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably the right way to grow from the ground up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the planning stages we asked ourselves â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important if weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to do this?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; k7KH ODQG KDV WR FRPH o UVW y Daniel said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we choose the right animals and run them in the right way, we produce this clean meat, we have happy customers and everything comes from that if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve nurtured the land.â&#x20AC;?

Cash-drought to cash-flow

Liquidity is just a fancy term for cash â&#x20AC;&#x201C; ensuring more cash is coming into the business than going out.

Yes, we would all love thatâ&#x20AC;Ś but smoothing out payment arrangements and adjusting spend to current realities allows for resilience during difo FXOW RU ORZ LQFRPH SHULRGV Agriculture is a dynamic, high risk and ever-changing industry, and farmers need to be proactive and forward planning to remain viable.

8SGDWLQJ FDVK p RZV DQG budgets could be the difference between making or breaking a farm business ZKHQ HYHQ WKH PRVW SURo WDEOH ventures can be undone by a cash-drought.

7KHUHIRUH FDVK p RZV DQG budgets should not be a setand-forget exercise, just to satisfy lenders or to show eligibly for other funding.

It should be used as a farm management and decision tool.

Banks (particularly after the recent Royal Commission) rely heavily on proven, prudent, reDOLVWLF DQG XSGDWHG FDVK p RZ management to provide lending, therefore no longer just relying on asset equity. +RZHYHU WKH UHDO EHQHo W LV farm management.

It provides the ability to identify trigger points throughout the year for activities such as farm improvements; investment; expansion; building cash reserves, or alternatively, LPSOHPHQW HIo FLHQFLHV WR HQ sure no long-term damage.

Budgeting is only a forecast estimate of what is expected, often based on previous year(s).

But how often does a budget really pan out as expected?

Current climatic changes; volatile and unstable physical and trading environments; inQRYDWLYH SUDFWLFHV GLYHUVLo FD WLRQ LQp DWLQJ FRVWV LQFUHDVHG farming demands; disease; plague; and limited time to

It may become more appropriate to delay spending and consolidate, bring forward improvement plans, invest further in contingency reserves, or pay down debt.

Key considerations when GHYHORSLQJ WKH FDVK p RZ

budget include more than just itemising general incomings and outgoings. z Forecast potential risks and budget for worse-case scenarios. z Build in contingency cash reserves where possible. z Smooth regular expense payments throughout the year rather than in lump sums. z Negotiate loan and lease payments that are affordable during non-income seasons for instance a lower rate in the off season and higher rates during income season. z $VVHVV EHQHo WV RI SXU chasing assets via instalments versus lump sum versus lease to purchase versus hire. z (YDOXDWH o [HG YHUVXV YDUL able interest rates for both borrowings and savings. z Consider additional revenue opportunities. z Review the business plan itemising and prioritising or defering projects that require

Family, employees and professional advisors are part of the team and should be included to help brainstorm possibilities. z Review spending and non-essentials. z Renegotiate loan repayments, consolidate debt, or spread debt risk. z Adjust superannuation or other future nest egg contributions.

z Discuss expected tax with accountant. z Research available grants for farm improvements and efo FLHQFLHV z Seek support available for farm labour and/or stock feed. z Consider government assistance such as Farm Household Allowance. z Seek additional revenue options (either ongoing or as a cash injection).

Consider renting out machinery, potential off-farm income, seeking out new customers, diversifying your VWRFN RU o QGLQJ QHZ PDUNHW industries, leasing out space (storage, agistment, accommodation or workspace), and in extreme circumstances, sale of stock or non-essential assets.

All these reasons and more are why it is crucial that farmers update budgets with actual FDVK o JXUHV RQ D UHJXODU EDVLV (at least monthly) to get an accurate picture of what is realistically ahead and make adjustments accordingly.

Regularly monitoring cash is just as important as feeding cattle and must be prioritised.

Farmers have a huge number of tasks to undertake on a daily basis, and therefore cashp RZ PDQDJHPHQW FDQ RIWHQ fall by the wayside.

Best practice for Victorian beekeepers Victorian beekeepers are now required to adopt stronger biosecurity practices to help protect the state’s valuable honey bee population from pests and diseases.

Minister for Agriculture, Jaclyn Symes today met Kyneton beekeeper and AgriFutures Victorian Rural Women’s Award winner, Claire Moore to announce the Australian Honey Bee Industry Biosecurity Code of Practice has been adopted into the state’s beekeeping regulations.

The announcement coincides with the start of almond pollination season – the biggest livestock movement in Australia, where about 4.2 billion bees are transported to Northern Victoria to pollinate almond orchards.

Best practice biosecurity is crucial in protecting the agriculture sector into the future – and is particularly important during almond season, when the risk of transferring pests and diseases between bees is high.

“The new Code is a reminder to all livestock owners, beekeepers and farmers that we all have to follow best practices to safeguard our valuable agricultural industries,” said Ms Symes.

and transmission to other hives and remove hives no longer containing bees from their apiary.

The honey bee industry contributes about $17.5 million to the Victorian economy annually, while the value of pollination services to Australia has been estimated at more than $8 billion.

Victoria was reminded of the importance of protecting our honey bee population last year when the Varroa mite pest was intercepted on a ship at the Port of Melbourne.

“Last year, Victoria’s honey bee industry was threatened by the exotic parasite Varroa mite,” Ms Symes said.

“Adopting these new standards is a great step in protecting Victoria’s valuable honey bee and pollination industries, and supporting the many regional jobs that rely on them.”

Northern Victoria’s grocery, food manufacturing = $9.23b NORTHERN Victoria has emerged as a food and grocery manufacturing powerhouse, generating $9.23 billion in output per year and employing 14,221 Victorians, according to new research released today by the Australian Food and Grocery Council.

Northern Victorian food and grocery processing is now the second largest contributor in terms of output and the eighth largest employer across the four Federal Victorian electorates of Mallee, Bendigo, Indi and Nicholls.

This has helped underpin the economy of Northern Victoria and delivered thousands of jobs contributing to an unemployment rate of only 5.1 per cemt, compared to 6 per cent for the rest of the state.

Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top 100 dairy farmers for milk quality named DAIRY farmers producing Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best quality milk have been named in Dairy Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2019 Milk Quality Awards.

The awards recognise farmers who produce the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best milk based on bulk milk cell count (BMCC).

Gold Awards recognise the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;top 100â&#x20AC;&#x2122; dairy farmers nationwide for milk quality, while Silver Awards are given to the top five per cent of producers.

Dairy Australia managing director Dr David Nation congratulated the 2019 winners. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t achieve an award like this without focus across the year on milk quality,â&#x20AC;? Dr Nation said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For many farmers, it reflects dedication over many years to get to this level. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These awards recognise the quality and safety of Australian milk that all farmers should take pride in.â&#x20AC;?

A focus on a low BMCC in milk production helps farmers prevent mastitis in their herd and can boost profitability, as producers are often paid a premium for qualifying milk by dairy processors.

Dairy Australia analysis has found that a farmer milking 300 cows who lowers their BMCC from 300,000 to 200,000 would be financially better off to the tune of $35,700 per year.

Dr Nation said Dairy Australia supports farmers to build their skills through its network of eight Regional Development Programs around the country, which run workshops and events to assist farmers to up skill themselves and their farm workers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dairy farmers can improve milk quality by attending training courses nationwide, available through our Regional Development Programs,â&#x20AC;? Dr Nation said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Farmers can also access a range of resources online to improve their milk quality by visiting Dairy Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website and using services like DataGene.â&#x20AC;?

OH, DEER: Sambar deer are the number one hunted deer species in Victoria.

LATEST research into deer hunting in Victoria shows the highest number of licensed recreational deer hunters harvesting the highest number of deer ever recorded.

The estimates of the 2018 deer harvest in Victoria report has found that 121,600 wild deer were harvested in 2018 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an increase from 106,275 deer harvested in 2017.

THE State Government has been challenged to provide more assistance to drought-affected Victorian farmers in the form of municipal rate relief.

Speaking in State Parliament during an adjournment debate directed to Agriculture Minister Jaclyn Symes, Liberal MP Wendy Lovell (MLC, Northern Victoria) last month called on the government to commit funding to provide municipal rate relief to Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drought affected farmers, including those in Northern Victoria.

Ms Lovell described the current situation faced by farmers of scarce and highly priced feed, together with the current exorbitant price of water as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;perfect storm of adversityâ&#x20AC;?.

She said the recent arrival of the dreaded 2019/20 municipal rate notice is yet another challenge for Victorian farmers.

Ms Lovell warned that â&#x20AC;&#x153;the potential loss of a generation of young farmers will be devastating for the fabric of Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s agriculturalâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The support previously offered of a one off cash payment of up to $3500 is far from adequate with most farmers facing an annual rates bill in excess of $20,000,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Minister Symes has previously indicated that rate subsidies for Victorian farmers may be considered in the future and I call on her to put her money where her mouth is and give our wonderful farmers the support they need.â&#x20AC;?

Illegal wood harvesting targeted across Victoria PARKS Victoria officers have stepped up patrols and surveillance over the past month following several cases of illegal tree felling and removal within parks and reserves in Victoria.

“It is illegal for people to fell trees or collect firewood in a national park,” said Chris Mercier from Parks Victoria statewide enforcement operations.

“We take a zerotolerance approach to those breaking firewood collection laws and anyone caught will be prosecuted.

“If you observe anyone causing damage to park habitat, removing wood or have information about environmental offences please contact Parks Victoria on 13 1963.

“All information will be treated confidentially.”

Significant hollow trees have been cut down and removed from national parks, destroying important habitats for mammals, reptiles, birds and invertebrates.

Since July, Operation Crookwell has targeted people who are allegedly cutting down trees to supply buyers with firewood.

In the latest seizure last month, Parks Victoria and Victoria Police intercepted a man in possession of more than two cubic meters of wood, al-

legedly taken from Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park.

The man’s vehicle, three chainsaws and the wood were confiscated.

He will be charged with several offences including cutting and taking firewood in a national park, driving off road and destroying wildlife habitat.

At least six other people will be charged with various offences as part of the operation and a total of three motor vehicles, six chainsaws and seven cubic metres of wood have been seized as evidence with the operation ongoing.

“Tree hollows provide precious habitat for hundreds of species of native birds, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates,” said Dr John Wright from Parks Victoria Science and Management Effectiveness.

“Amazing creatures like the Squirrel Glider, Brush-tailed Phascogale, Regent Parrot, Red-tailed Black Cockatoo and the Tree Goanna all depend on hollows for their survival.

“It can take centuries for nature to create the hollows that so many of our unique and threatened wildlife rely on.

“Destroying these precious resources through selfish and reckless behaviour is a tragedy.”

THE National Farmers’ Federation says ensuring Australia’s biosecurity is adequately resourced must be a number one priority for the government to protect the economy, the environment and agriculture from unwanted pests and diseases.

The NFF is calling for the government to prioritise the implementation of the Biosecurity Imports Levy.

The levy would make available additional funding to strengthen biosecurity systems and protect against the incursion of pests and diseases.

“Our biosecurity system has a huge job to do,” NFF chief executive Tony Mahar said.

Queensland Fruit Fly Feature

Keeping the Yarra Valley fruit fly free in spring and summer

FRUIT FLY READY: A typical farm bike fruit fly bait set-up with a hand wand and rear Jetstream nozzles located on either side of the spray rig to apply fruit fly bait droplets on foliage.

TRADITIONALLY our Yarra Valley winters are very cold, and this cold weather is a vital management tool against any fruit fly that have attempted to make the Yarra Valley home.

We can only learn from our northern neighbours what fruit fly attempt so they can survive over winter.

Cold weather makes over-wintering fruit flies search for warm dry places to see the winter out.

Other than sheds and buildings, Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) can seek refuge in citrus and other evergreen trees.

An adult fly can survive some frosts hidden in the curl of a leaf.

Researcher, Andrew Jessup has shown how much warmer an evergreen tree can be compared with the ambient air temperature,

and how this can assist fruit fly survival over the colder months.

Getting on top of the QFF population early can bring about reward.

Lower summer numbers can be achieved if there are less fruit flies to breed in the first place.

Springtime is the time also to freshen up old monitoring traps and install any new traps.

If you have noticed fruit fly damage in a particular part of the garden or farm last season â&#x20AC;&#x201C; make sure to do some extra surveillance there this season.

Refresh and teach others what to look for in traps so that you can be forewarned.

Ensure all pruning is done and the fruit production area is going to be easy to manage for harvest.

An easy harvest is more likely to be done more frequently and will promote good fruit fly management.

As summer can get quite busy with watering and

fruit harvest, the lead up to spring can be best used to check that fruit fly baiting equipment is functioning and ready to go.

Check in with your agronomist or garden centre on how you can be prepared with fruit fly baiting as this program should ideally start six to eight weeks before harvest to get a good level of protection.

These preparations can be applied to any region which prevents fruit flies establishing.

Compact breed with a big future THIS year’s Royal Melbourne Show will again showcase the very best in Australian Lowline cattle – the compact beef breed with a big future.

The registered Australian Lowline cattle of today are descended from those original Aberdeen Angus cattle imported from Canada and Scotland in 1929 by the NSW Department of Agriculture - to run at their Trangie and Glen Innes Farms.

From there, every Lowline animal in Australia is able to trace their DNA, and is parent verified before registration to prove they come from the same genetic pool as the one that originated in 1929.

According to Lowline breeder and Whitby Farm stud principal, Ken Lorains, Australian Lowline cattle are one of the few breeds that retain pure genetics from the original herds in their coun-

tries of origin.

Benefits of the Lowline breed include: Compact frames – at just 60% of the size of larger breeds, it is possible to run more Lowline cattle per hectare; and Excellent feed efficiency – the breed offers an exceptional feed to energy ratio, and are early maturing, able to be finished on grass and produce more kilos per hectare.

The Australian Lowline Cattle Association (ALCA) is available to provide information, support and guidance to all breeders, and will be on site at the Royal Melbourne Show to talk about the breed that has everyone interested.

OUR area was not hit anywhere as hard as other regions, and we got out of the drought relatively well.

Newer style farmers who have been pushing the envelope a little bit, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been effected, but the old traditional farmers have got through it okay.

Numbers in the area, some may be back a little, but overall weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re travelling okay.

We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get much of a spring, and autumn was so late, but with winter being so mild the grass has kept growing, and that has been a positive.

For those who have held onto their stock, this additional feed on the ground has been unexpected and welcome.

And with stock prices continuing to rise, farmers should feel heartened.

In previous droughts, stock prices have been a disaster â&#x20AC;&#x201C; worth absolutely nothing.

In a lot of the big droughts, stock have been nearly give-away prices, or like in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;72 and â&#x20AC;&#x2122;73 farmers had to shoot their cattle.

Today those same animals are still worth 300 or 400 dollars.

The market has held, and people are still getting reasonable money for livestock as long as they havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t got too light.

With the hope of more rain, and with stock commanding rates previously unseen the industry in the Central East looks well on the way to recovery.

Sheep Sales Gestation length, lamb survival and eating quality MANAGEMENT and nutrition of the ewe will always have the greatest influence over lamb survival.

So says Derrynock Poll Dorset stud principals, Simon and Ted Beattie.

The pair have been at the forefront of Dorset breeding for years, their philosophy of stronger lambs at birth, with a greater cold tolerance, paying dividends on the farm.

Their focus on moderate birth weights with an

average or shorter gestation length, and increased milk production, has helped to decrease the ewe assist-rate at birth.

“Improving lambing ease, and lifting survival rates to above 95 per cent at Derrynock - well above the industry standard of around 70 per cent – is a very exciting development for us,” Simon said.

“With scanning rates reaching 185 per cent in

our commercial flock of approximately 800 meat maternal ewes in recent years, it was time to increase our focus on lamb survival.

“We are finding our best results are coming from ewes having 4.5 - 5.5 kilogram lambs at birth.”

Lambs that are born earlier are not necessarily lighter, but are born with a lot more ease.

Ag machinery sales market likely to be down 10-15 per cent

THE Tractor and Machinery Association (TMA) held its annual conference at the Hyatt Essendon Fields on July 16 and was strongly attended by manufacturers, dealers DQG DIoOLDWHV IURP DURXQG WKH nation.

Delegates were treated to a range of presentations centred around the theme Know Your Customer in an effort to sharpen the focus on the needs of tomorrowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s customer.

Producers brace for blue over cheese and other products in proposed FTA

FARMERS across the region are being urged to UHYLHZ WKH GHWDLOV RI WKH proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the European Union (EU) and Australia.

The Nationalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; State Deputy Leader Steph Ryan VDLG WKH )HGHUDO *RYHUQment was seeking feedback on the impacts that might arise from the proposed agreement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Local wine producers DUH ILJKWLQJ D PRYH E\ WKH EU to ban them from using the term prosecco,â&#x20AC;? Ms Ryan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The EU is now seeking to protect a number of other food names, known as geographical indicators, DV SDUW RI QHJRWLDWLRQV RYHU a free trade agreement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These protections are a real bone of contention for a lot of Australian producers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In total, the EU wants 236 spirit names and 172 agricultural and other foodstuff names as geographical indicators in Australia including dairy, meat, smallgoods, horticulture, confectionery, oils, beer and spirits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A number of these

goods are the common names used for products in Australia. The EUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dePDQGV FRXOG KDYH VLJQLILcant ramifications for local farmers, including cheese PDNHUV SRUN DQG ROLYH RLO producers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Parmesan, gorgonzola, Grana Padano, taleggio, haloumi, brie, camembert, edam, gouda, pecorino and cheddar could all be impacted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The geographical indicators also include meats like bresola, jamon and prosciutto.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Ryan said producers had the opportunity to object to the protections the EU was trying to place on particular products. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no doubt that market access to the EU would be a huge boon for many producers, but it is important that the rights of Australian farmers are not traded away,â&#x20AC;? Ms Ryan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The European Union is an enormous market, with a gross domestic product of more than $17 trillion US dollars and a population of half a billion people.â&#x20AC;?

Worm Hit â&#x20AC;&#x201C; working when it counts to lift crop yield

The Brunskills also used Worm Hit exclusively with Moby barley on their other property, where they are getting similar results despite the current drought conditions.

Worm Hit had humble beginnings when Chris Curran and a couple of farmer mates discussed the possibility of compressing composted green waste into a form that could be spread or sown by farmers using conventional equipment.

Chris was already in the recycling business - shredding green waste and other materials for councils around Australia, and what he was seeing was vast mountains of composted material building up around the country with very little uptake by farmers.

The reason for this was the cost of moving the compost was cost prohibitive, unless the buyer was located close to the source.

Chris decided to work with an organisation that used worms to breakdown the compost, turning it into vermicast (worm poo) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with the idea being then to pelletise the castings.

Given August’s special on Hay and Silage we thought it was a good time to lay out how we apply these elements to your soil and foliage from a pasture perspective.

The first step is always a soil test.

Ideally this would have been completed in the last two years, however if unavailable we can have one completed for you through SWEP Analytical.

Using the results, we present you with recommendations using

appropriate products from our HealthyEarth range of 16.

Yes that’s right, we have 16 products that are specific to agricultural needs.

The majority of these products contain trace elements which will help your silage last longer as the bacteria applied will also be fed with these products.

Step two is we treat the soil for acid, low calcium and trace element deficiencies.

Apply our liquid calcium product, N:Cal, or calcium magnesium, Cal/Mag 5:1, at two to 60 litres per hectare for a low cost, immediately available calcium.

Add our Liquid KickStart NPK and trace element liquid fertiliser to the mix and have a low cost, concentrated trace element application.

Apply five to 10 litres

per hectare.

Mix both together for a minimal pass, low cost trace element mix.

Step three is directly after haying, grazing or mulching, spray onto the soil five to 10 litres of Kickstart per hectare.

If nitrogen,calcium or magnesium is low apply 20 to 60 litres of N:Cal or Cal/ Mag 5:1 per hectare.

Step four is maintaining the yields with foliar spraying.

A few days before grazing, foliar spray with our liquid NPK LeafSpray.

Then add N:Cal and Cal/ Mag 5:1 at one to two litres per hectare.

THE State Government is supporting Victorian farmers to invest in new equipment and technology to improve sustainability and reduce energy costs with the rollout of Agriculture Energy Investment Plan grants.

Minister for Agriculture Jaclyn Symes last month announced 36 farm businesses around the state who are benefitting from over $1 million in the latest round of grants.

The grants will support farm businesses complete projects to improve their energy efficiency, reduce on-farm costs and maintain their competitiveness.

Grants have been awarded to farms across the agricultural sector â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including dairy, sheep, horticulture and viticulture producers.

The grants awarded

so far will be used for projects including solar energy systems, sustainable solar-powered dairy systems and irrigation and electricity upgrades.

Some farms are expected to save over 40 per cent on their annual energy costs.

Farms from across the state, including those in the Wangaratta, Moira, Wellington, Alpine, Gannawarra, South Gippsland, and Campaspe shires have been successful.

The grants process will now be streamlined for dairy farmers applying for small energy grants, who will now be able to receive grants up to $50,000 for eligible equipment without requiring an on-farm energy assessment.

AT THE recent Agsafe Stewardship Conference and Awards in Brisbane, a Victorian cricket club from Kaniva was recognised for their efforts by being awarded the drumMUSTER Community Group of the Year.

When Kaniva Cricket Club needed a way to fundraise for their community group, they choose drumMUSTER as their pathway.

In 2010, the club started inspecting chemical containers and to date have inspected just shy of 50,000 Agvet chemical containers.

The Kaniva Cricket Club’s annual collection returns on average 6,000 drums each year.

In 2010, the cricket club saw the benefit in educating local farmers about the program; conducting a farm to farm drive about how to clean the chemical containers and which ones were participating in the program.

The Kaniva Cricket Club continue to promote the drumMUSTER program with their drum returns growing every year.

AUSTRALIA’S young agricultural innovators, scientists and researchers wanting to make a difference in agriculture are invited to submit their innovative agricultural research project ideas for a chance to receive a share in up to $242,000 in grants.

Minister for Agriculture, Bridget McKenzie, has encouraged 18–35 year old innovators to undertake new and creative research to help agricultural industries to overcome industry challenges and to realise its potential.

“Australia is a world leader in agricultural innovation, and ingenuity has allowed Australian agricultural industries to become more competitive, resilient, productive and profitable, and to overcome barriers to growth,” Minister McKenzie said.

“Our continued advancement is this area is needed more than ever.

“Many of these ideas come from young people working or studying in the industry, and the Science and Innovation Award grants aim to support early career researchers, scientists and other innovators to develop new approaches to industry issues.

“On top of that, one grant recipient receives the Minister’s Award for an extended research project which will have real and practical benefits to the agriculture sector.

“The depth of scientific research underway in our research institutions has a very practical application in addressing long term challenges

to increasing productivity for our primary industries.

“It is inspiring work and I look forward to seeing this type of innovation on farm.

“I encourage passionate young people who are studying or working in these fields to submit the projects they have to improve the productivity, competitiveness and sustainability of their industries.”

Last year’s special Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Award recipient, Dr Kateryna Bazaka of the Australian National University ,was recognised for her project which investigated integrated electric discharges and aquaculture for abattoir wastewater treatment.
