A NEW dairy goat farm in Moorabool, near Geelong, is expected to house 14,000 dairy goats as well as providing people in the Geelong region job growth opportunities after the Geelong City Council Planning Committee approved an application

by Nuchev to develop the state-of-the art dairy goat farm.

Nuchev is an Australian health and nutrition solutions company with a focus on the Australasian market.

The company is working with in-market partners to deliver premium goat milk based formula and nutritional products to consumers.

Nuchev Group chief executive officer Ben Dingle said the company was “delighted” that the planning committee made a thorough and public assessment of the application which resulted in a positive decision.

“We can now start to put plans into action,” he said.

What’s on for southern Victorian farmers *THE Nuffield Australia National Conference is to take place on Wednesday, September 14 to Friday, September 16 at the Adelaide Convention Centre in Adelaide.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Vision, Innovation and Progress’ and will deliver new technology, innovation and cutting edge ideas for the latest novel onfarm solutions.

More than 300 primary producers, industry leaders and influencers will hear from 24 returning Nuffield Scholars as they share unique insights into their scholarship experiences and study tour findings.

Time is up for farmers to stop controversial backpacker tax

MAIN Ridge-based Matilda’s Australian Frozen Fruit is now being stocked by supermarket giant Coles making it the first 100 per cent Australian grown, processed and packaged frozen fruit range to hit the retailer’s shelves.

Matilda’s berries are mostly sourced from Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm which has been in the Gallace family for 50 years, covering 800 acres of land in Victoria and Queensland.

The berries are all handpicked and graded before being washed and snap frozen in an entirely new purpose-built facility in the Yarra Valley.

Matilda’s Australian Frozen Fruit was launched in December 2015 by third generation strawberry farmers Matt and Ruth Gallace after dozens of people contracted hepatitis A from eating imported contaminated frozen mixed berries.

Matilda’s co-founder Ruth Gallace said the origin of each product is completely transparent, with the fruits’ growing region clearly labelled on every bag.

“We’re really proud to provide a product that clearly states where the produce originates from and where it is packaged,” she said.

“We have long argued that there needs to be far more

transparency around food origin and how it’s processed and packaged.”

Already available in more than 700 independent retailers, Matilda’s frozen strawberries, blueberries, mixed berries and mango will be available in 100 Coles stores across Victoria.

Mrs Gallace said the family has been a preferred Coles supplier for almost 40 years, so selling through the retailer is a natural fit.

“Coles has closely monitored our progress from the beginning: from factory construction to the launch of the business and the enthusiastic uptake of the range in the Australian market.

“At present we have enough berries to supply Coles in Victoria, but if the customer response is similar to what we’ve experienced in other channels, we expect it won’t be long before Matilda’s is available in Coles nationally,” she said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce recently announced the release of a consultation Regulation Impact Statement for public comment that will strengthen Australia’s imported food safety system to avoid a repeat of the contaminated frozen berries incident.

“These proposed changes are designed to give the community greater confidence about the safety of the food they eat, however, in creating a more robust system, it’s important the changes don’t impose unnecessary costs or regulatory burden on industry, consumers or trading partners,” he said.

“Recent food safety issues – such as the cases of hepatitis A in frozen Chinese berries last year – have further underlined the importance of making sure our imported food system can quickly identify, respond to and manage food safety risks, while meeting our international obligations.

“We will work in consultation with the imported food industry, state and territory food authorities and our trading partners on a range of reform options to keep our imported food system strong, modern and flexible.

“I encourage food importers and other stakeholders to have their say and help us understand the potential impact on the food industry from any proposed reforms,” Minister Joyce said.

The consultation Regulation Impact Statement is available for public comment at agriculture.gov.au/importedfood-reform until close of business September 30.

“NFF will actively participate in the review, and will be seeking to meet with the consultants leading the review as soon as possible, to ensure they understand how important this issue is for Australian agriculture.

“We continue to urge the government to abandon this ill-conceived measure which will ultimately damage the economy in the long term,” Mr Finlay said.

“We’d like to see this review result in a sensible solution that acknowledges the vital role that backpackers play in the vegetable industry, as well as many other industries, and avoids damaging regional economies,” he said.

in which time we came up with solutions that the government rejected.

“So it’s frustrating that we now have less than a month to come back and tell them what we’ve already said,” Ms Germano said.

She added that the review process should have started earlier to give the community and government more time to make an informed decision on the future of the backpacker tax.

“Instead of starting a new review process, the government should have provided some kind of feedback on our submission to the last review of the tax (in April this year).

“The backpacker tax is a threat to two of our biggest industries – agriculture and tourism – and it isn’t going to go away until it’s dealt with properly.

“Working holiday makers bring in about $3.5 billion to the Australian economy every year, and we risk losing that revenue if the backpacker tax goes ahead,” she said.

The backpacker tax was scheduled to be implemented from July 1 this year but was delayed pending a further review.

The VFF together with the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) lodged a submission opposing the tax.

TIME has run out for farmers wanting to convince the Federal Government to abandon its backpacker tax, with submissions having to be lodged on the controversial tax by September 2.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce recently announced a review of the government’s proposed 32.5 per cent tax on working holiday makers which is due to come into effect on January 1, 2017.

Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) horticulture vice president Emma Germano said that while it is “great” the Federal Government is taking notice of the people who will be affected by the tax; those wanting to lodge submissions to the review only have until the early September deadline.

“Backpackers are a major source of labour for farmers across the nation and this tax threatens to drive them away, to choose working holidays in other nations,” she said.

“Our farmers know the backpacker tax is a serious threat to their ability to recruit harvest labour, so we’re glad to see Minister Joyce has acknowledged the problem, which is a positive step.

“But we’ve been fighting this tax for more than a year,

Gippsland winery gets thumbs up in Halliday Wine Companion GIPPSLAND-based winery Lightfoot & Sons has been awarded the top 5-star rating in the latest Halliday Wine Companion compiled by pre-eminent wine writer James Halliday.

Every year wineries around Australia eagerly await the release of the annual Halliday Wine Companion, an encyclopaedic reference of all of the wines of Australia.

In the companion, respected wine critic James Halliday delivers his thoughts on the best wines in Australia after tasting more than 9000.

To receive a 5-star rating, wineries must produce at least two wines rating 95 points (out of 100) or above.

Lightfoot & Sons not only received a 5-star rating, with Halliday describing the winery as “outstanding” and “capable of producing wines of a very high quality”, but it was also awarded one of only 10 Dark Horse awards.

Each year the Halliday Wine Companion identifies 10 Dark Horses which are wineries that may not be well known, but are identified as having a bright future.

Lightfoot & Sons’ Myrtle Point Vineyard is located in East Gippsland, Victoria, within view of the Gippsland Lakes.

The vineyard site, situated between the foothills of the Great

Dividing Range and Bass Strait, was selected when soil mapping of the region identified tracts of the much celebrated Terra Rosa over Limestone soil structure.

The 29Ha vineyard was planted between 1995-1997 by the Lightfoot family on their farm ‘Myrtle Point’.

Since then their family business has grown, and the second generation of family, sons Rob and Tom Lightfoot, now manage the business, with their wines now being made by Alastair Butt and Tom Lightfoot.

Pinot Noir plantings make up almost half, with smaller blocks of

Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet.

“We aim to make wines that reflect the unique character and quality of the fruit we grow in Gippsland, and it’s great to see our wines being recognised in the wine companion,” Mr Butt said.

Mr Lightfoot said that they have always believed that viticulture in Gippsland has enormous potential.

“A lot of the time you are on your own and you have to work out what to do without the benefit of seeing how other people are going about it.

“The 5 star rating from James Halliday is a nice endorsement of East Gippsland as a premium wine producing region,” he added.

All set for a bumper Henty Machinery Field Days WIDESPREAD rain across the mixed farming belt and strong commodity prices will combine with a full house of exhibitors at the 53rd annual Henty Machinery Field Days (HMFD).

The 105ha grounds are at capacity with the event expected to draw a crowd of 60,000 keen to inspect more than $100 million worth of machinery on site.

More than 850 exhibitors will display their products on more than 1200 sites in what is now the single largest agricultural and open-air event in southern Australia which is set to take place on Tuesday, September

20 to Thursday, September 22.

As the Henty Machinery Field Days heads into its 53rd year, an economic impact study revealed the event contributes $92 million to the national economy.

The study undertaken by Crowe Horwarth last year showed the field days created around $30 million in economic value and sustained 321 fulltime jobs in southern NSW and northern Victoria.

HMFD chairman Ross Edwards said the study had certainly spelt out the importance of the field days.

“Not only in this region but across Australia – to think this is

the result of a one day header school in the 1960s makes one feel humble to be the leader of this massive achievement,” he said.

Among the features for the 2016 event will be the popular agronomy demonstration plots.

Grain growers will be able to inspect 22 wheat varieties, including a potential replacement for Wedgetail, at the site’s dedicated agronomy plots.

Farm inventors, backyard tinkerers and students will display their innovative ideas at the Agri-Innovators site.

The entries had to meet the criteria of having a practical

on-farm application, be based on an original idea of the entrant and not be in full scale production at the time of entry.

Other drawcards at the 2016 event will be the daily demonstrations of Parelli natural horsemanship, the sheep and yard dog trials, agronomy plots, 2016 Natural Fibre Fashion Awards, chainsaw carving, vintage farm machinery, and the Farm Gate Produce Market Area with entertainment by Dreamfields creative mentoring program.

The prestigious Henty Machine of the Year Award will be judged on September 19 and presented at the

official opening on Tuesday, September 20.

To pay tribute to the nation’s dairy industry during its time of crisis, the field days will be officially opened by Australian Dairy Farmers vice-president and Wagga dairy farmer, Simone Jolliffe. .To mark the 40th anniversary of the field days at the Cookardinia Road site, there will be vintage fashion parades featuring garments from the mid-1970s daily at 11am and 2.30pm.

Designers with a flair for converting natural fibres into wearable art will compete for almost $6000 worth of prizes.

One of the few full-time professional chainsaw sculptors in Australia, Angie Polglaze, will be showcasing this art form each day during the morning and afternoon sessions near The Stump.

Visitors will be able to take 10-minute helicopter joy flights over the field day site and surrounding countryside with Wagga Air Centre pilot Chris Cabot.

Gates are open from 8am to 5pm, with adult tickets $20, children 12 to 16 years $5, and children under 12 free when accompanied by an adult.

Analysis provides dairy farmers with more power to breed for better reproductive performance A RECENT analysis into trying to stop the downward trend in Australian dairy herd reproductive performance has conďŹ rmed that the daughter fertility Australian Breeding Value (ABV) is an effective tool to improve herd reproductive performance.

Conducted by John Morton, the analysis found that the daughters of sires with higher ABVs for daughter fertility have markedly better reproductive performance than daughters of sires with lower daughter fertility ABVs. Dr Morton said that continual selection of sires with a high Balanced Performance Index (BPI) would result in small but ongoing improvements in herd reproductive performance. “This is signiďŹ cant because genetic improvement is both permanent and cumulative,â€? he said. “Some farmers may choose to use the Health Weighted Index (HWI) which puts more emphasis on daughter fertility than the BPI. “However, to maximise

genetic gain for herd fertility, select high BPI/HWI sires from the Good Bulls Guide that have high ABVs for daughter fertility,� Dr Morton said.

Michelle Axford from the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS) said farmers could expect continued improvements in herd fertility, as more cows with better genes for fertility enter the milking herd. “Farmers have more choice than in the past, with the number of high BPI bulls with a daughter fertility ABV of at least 105 increasing from 16 in 2011 to 478 in 2016 in the Good Bulls Guide/App,� she said.

As well as this, the reliability of the daughter fertility ABV has improved.

In 2003, only 10 of the top 50 Holstein bulls and eight of the top 20 Jersey bulls had a daughter fertility ABV. Today, with improvements to the genetic evaluation model and increased reliability, every Holstein and Jersey bull listed

in the Good Bulls Guide has a daughter fertility ABV. Similar improvements have been achieved in other dairy breeds.

This improvement provides dairy farmers with even more power to breed for better reproduction. “Of course, genetics complement other management strategies used by dairy farmers to improve herd fertility, including nutrition, heat detection, AI practices and bull management,� she said.

The study drew upon data from 74 seasonal and split calving commercial herds with high-quality reproductive data, covering more than 60,000 lactations from Holstein cows and almost 3000 Jersey cow lactations.

ADHIS is an initiative of Australian Dairy Farmers Ltd that receives the majority of its funding from Dairy Australia through the Dairy Services Levy.

LEGENDAIRY farmers Tim and Amanda Calder’s Meeniyan-based dairy farm is regularly flooded and while most would see this as a curse, it in fact allows feed to grow for the family’s cows.

The family own the iconic paddocks that travellers on the South Gippsland Highway see as they cross the Tarwin River.

The land is regularly flooded, turning the low-lying areas of the farm into a picturesque ‘Lake Meeniyan’ that eventually drains away into the Tarwin River.

After heavy rainfall, two branches of the river - from as far afield as the Strzelecki Ranges - bottleneck at the bridge, forcing water to backup onto the paddocks until it can make its way downstream.

Luckily, the river silt and moist soil can help grow feed for the Calders’ cows until well into the dry summer months.

The rest of the 122 hectare property is a productive dairy farm, with the Calder’s having turned a run-down property into a well-run dairy business that milks 250 stud Holsteins.

It’s taken 15 years of hard work, but the Calders finally have the herd and infrastructure they need to take the next step in their business.

“Every year you chip away a bit more and 15 years later you have a dairy and laneways and paddocks,” Mrs Calder said.

For Mr Calder, building up his herd size and quality has been a particularly satisfying part of the journey.

Today, together with Mr Calder’s parents, they run Calderlea Holstein Stud, which has an enviable reputation for breeding bulls that produce top-quality cows.

“When I started out I had 60 cows that I bought from Maffra in the middle of a drought for $600 each

and we got 12 mature cows from Mum and Dad,” he said.

His parents farm in a business partnership with Tim and Amanda, but run a separate herd, milking them in their own dairy on a similar sized property next door.

Mr Calder said he is grateful for the assistance and advice he’s received from his parents, but was also keen to gain a broader education away from the family farm.

“I have an agricultural science degree which opened my eyes to different ways of thinking,” he said.

“You don’t just look at what your parents did and think that’s the best way to do it.

“A science degree teaches you analytical thinking.”

With two young children –

Lloyd, 2, and James, 6 months – the couple is also analysing the pros and cons of business growth versus family happiness.

Mrs Calder, who has a business degree and will shortly return to work as a manager at Rabobank, said the dairy lifestyle can be great for raising a family.

“I was talking with some mums at Mothers’ Group the other day and they were quite envious because Tim gets to come in most days and have breakfast with us,” she said.

Mrs Calder, who sees the economics of dairy farming through her work, said the impact of the industry on the local area should not be underestimated.

“You see the whole service provider side of things and how

much money flows through the community from it,” she said.

It’s a sentiment backed up by her husband, who said the money that washes through the dairy industry impacts on every aspect of life in Gippsland.

“Not everyone around here is involved in the dairy industry itself, but you see the money that flows from dairy and feeds back into the district,” he added.

AUSVEG throws weight behind Hort code reform spotlight recently after several Bundaberg sweet potato growers claimed they were owed a combined total of nearly $2 million by agents at Melbourne Produce Markets.

AUSVEG spokesperson Jordan Brooke-Barnett said it is vital that there is a strong, effective code of conduct regulating trading relationships and the recommended reforms will help to increase the code’s ability to provide protections for growers against unfair behaviour from their trading partners.

AUSVEG has thrown its weight behind calls for reform to the Horticulture Code of Conduct calling on the Federal Government to implement reforms from a recent independent review.

The review of the code, which regulates sales of fresh fruit and vegetables between growers and traders, was released earlier this year and included 13 recommendations for targeted reforms including an improved system for dispute resolution.

By DAVID RIZZOLI THE ancient French beef cattle breed, the Charolais, is the feature beef cattle breed for this year’s Royal Melbourne Show.

Introduced into Australia in 1969 as semen from France, the breed goes back; legend has it, to 878 AD when white cattle were first noticed in the west-central to south eastern regions comprising the old French Provinces of Charolais and Nievre.

It is believed that these native cattle were developed with some infusion of Shorthorn.

What is known is these cattle were popular in major French markets by the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Selection which followed developed a white breed of cattle, which, typical of most cattle breeds, was developed for meat and milk and as a draft animal.

Around the time of the

French Revolution in 1773, a cattle farmer named Claude Mathieu from the Charolais region moved to the Nievre area taking his white cattle with him.

The cattle thrived in the new environment and improved to the extent that they were renamed and more widely known as Nivemias cattle.

In the 1800s two separate Herd Books, one for the new breed and one for Charolais were established.

The books were merged in 1919, with the Charolais holding the records of the newer book and retaining the name.

In 1969 the Charolais was the first of the western European beef breeds to be introduced into Australia, with semen following from a small number of select bulls and heifers.

Initially, the new breed had major calving problems, as almost invariably the recipient females were consider-

ably smaller than the double muscled donor Charolais bulls.

Almost all births had to be delivered by caesarean section, but as more Charolais blood was introduced into the subsequent crosses this problem became minimised.

Charolais producers in Australia claim that theirs is the Breed of Need, that need being to make money.

The breeders claim that the breed is renowned for its remarkable growth rate allowing for earlier turnoff of cattle into specific markets.

Also, they say, the modern Australian Charolais has adapted to suit the many and varied climatic conditions found in the harsh Australian environment.

It is believed that this adaptability has been brought about by one factor only – the need to make money.

The Charolais cross is a cross into profit.

ONE of the oldest Downs breeds that originated in the United Kingdom (UK), the Southdown, will be the feature sheep breed at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Royal Melbourne Show.

Southdowns may have arrived with the First Fleet, but were earliest recorded in Australia when the Reverend Samuel Marsden imported them in 1793 soon after his arrival in the colony.

Until around the mid-1970s, Southdowns were the standard choice by which all other fat or prime lambs were graded.

With the majority of fat lambs being exported to the UK, particularly immediately following World War II and sold at the SmithďŹ eld market, the smaller joints from the Southdown and its crosses were particularly suited for purchase

by British housewives under post war meat rationing.

All this changed in 1974 when the ban on the import of sheep from New Zealand into Australia was lifted.

Up until then, a 15 month old Southdown would weigh 150lbs to 170lbs (68kg to 77kg) and a mature ram 210lbs to 230lbs (95kg to 104kg).

With the infusion of New Zealand blood todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top 15 month old Southdown rams weigh 100kg to 125kgs and mature rams 155kg to 165kg.

Lambing percentage among the ewes is often as high as 150 per cent.

The ďŹ&#x201A;eece on the Southdown is dense with a staple length of four to ďŹ ve centimetres.

The average ďŹ&#x201A;eece cut is about 2.7kg to 3.5 kg, with a micron of 24 to 31.

Genetic bee research could protect Aussie bees from Varroa mite

KILLER BEES: Researchers have developed genetic tests to differentiate semen from bees such as this Apis mellifera capensis queen, black Capensis worker, and yellow Apis mellifera scutellata.

THE development of a genetic test that allows imports of semen from honey bees from resistant breeding stock is one step closer thanks to research from Australian scientists.

Beekeepers will be able to protect themselves from the devastating Varroa mite with a new test likely to allow imports of honey bee semen from resistant breeding stock without putting the industry at risk from another pest – Africanised bees.

Africanised bees are hybrids of European honey bees and A. m. capensis from Africa that are highly aggressive, unsuitable for beekeeping, and extremely invasive.

The development of a genetic test to differentiate Africanised bees from non-Africanised bees could allow imports of honey bee semen from countries that have desirable stock, but also have Africanised bees.

The research has been carried out by Nadine Chapman and Ben Oldroyd from the University of Sydney as part of the Honey Bee and Pollination Program, a partnership between the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), Horticulture Innovation Australia and the Australian Government.

Chair of the program’s advisory panel Michael Hornitzky said honey bee breeders in Australia have a keen interest in importing strains of honey

bees bred for resistance to diseases, as well as other types of genetically improved stock.

“Australia is currently home to the only significant population of Varroa-free European honey bees in the world but we cannot be complacent as our bees have little resistance to this mite,” he said.

“While we’ve been able to import queen bees from countries without Africanised bees, this will allow semen to be tested and brought in from other countries without the risk of importing Africanised bees as well as Varroa which is not transmitted through semen.”

Dr Hornitzky said the research is of even greater importance in the wake of a species of Varroa mite being found on Asian honey bees in Townsville, North Queensland.

“The opportunity to import more strains of bees that have been bred for resistance to the Varroa mite would offer a safeguard for the future of not only our industry, but also the broader agriculture sector that relies so heavily on a healthy honey bee population,” he said.

He added that the Africanised honey bee test offers exciting possibilities in regards to the draft policy review for the importation of honey bee semen currently being considered by policy makers.

College’s show team tastes success

By DAVID RIZZOLI HOW do you run 20 Corriedale stud sheep, 28 White Suffolk stud sheep, 27 Hampshire Down stud sheep, one Southdown sheep, four stud Texel sheep, 16 black and coloured sheep and 25 Angora goats, a “few” calves and pigs, a pony, three alpacas and “heaps” of chickens all on one and a half acres?

You don’t. But if you are the 45 students at Elisabeth

Murdoch College at Langwarrin you do it with the aid of a number of kindly neighbours from the surrounding district.

Headed up by teacher, Andrew Cosby and year 12 student Shanae Hall, the agriculture students at the school attend to this variety of stud and other animals all year round, seven days a week.

The students range from year 7 to year 12 and not one of them has come off a farm.

They do it through the dedi-

cation of their teacher who is a past Victorian Teacher of the Year and the enthusiasm of their leader, Shanae, who apart from her studies, looks after the animals every weekend.

Shanae, who finishes at Elisabeth Murdoch after year 12 this year hopes to go to the University of New England and study environmental science and then return to the school as a teacher, heads up the school’s Show Team.

When Southern Farmer caught up with the enthusiastic team of eleven students at the 2016 Hamilton and Western District Sheep Show they were celebrating their recent win of Reserve Senior Champion Corriedale Ewe. This follows success at the Australian Sheep Breeders’ Association Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo in midJuly where they won Supreme School Corriedale Exhibit, Best Corriedale Breeders Group in

the black and coloured sheep section, Champion Lamb, Sires Progeny Group and the Best Breeders Group together with Champion and Reserve Champion Angora Doe. Elisabeth Murdoch College has a long history of success at major sheep shows and agricultural shows, not only in the schools sections but against all comers in the open competitions.

Through its agriculture studies and farm the Elisabeth Mur-

doch College is giving young people an insight into animal and food production that is not available to students at metropolitan and larger regional cities’ secondary schools even though many of the school’s students will not go on to be involved in farming.

But, as Shanae explains, the only real problem their little farm has is when they fertilise their pastures the local population of wild rabbits eats all the new growth.

Wurrook Merino Stud dominates at 2016 Ballarat Sheep Show

By DAVID RIZZOLI HUNDREDS of sheep and exhibitors braved the elements to witness the ongoing domination of the Merino sections by the Walton family’s Wurrook Merino Stud at Rokewood at this year’s Ballarat A&P Society’s Sheep Show.

Many studs in the Southern Farmer region won their fair share of the broad ribbons that were awarded at the event, which has become one of the most prestigious shows for sheep and wool growers.

Chairman of the Society’s Sheep Committee John Harbour said that he was very pleased with this year’s event.

“We have seen some outstanding sheep of many breeds

here and it’s a credit to the industry.

“We welcomed new competitors and are looking to attract many more in 2017,” he said.

The show was followed on by the Ballarat Merino Ram Sale with the district stud, Coryule at Willowvale, with Craig Tricky as stud master, taking the top price of $7000 and the title of Best Ram in Sale judged prior to the sale.

There’s more at Elmore than ever before

POPULAR EVENT: There will be plenty on offer for visitors at this year’s Elmore Field Days with some 700 stalls featuring the latest and greatest technology on offer.

EACH year the organisers of Elmore Field Days offer patrons something new to the three-day event and this year’s exciting new addition is the live music on site with three different performers on each day.

Starting on Tuesday, October 4 and running through to Thursday, October 6, with gates opening at 8.30am and closing at 5.30pm each day, visitors to the 2016 event will be treated to as many as 700 stalls featuring the latest technology and handy gadgets.

The field days showcase some of the latest machinery, innovation and techniques used in the agricultural industry.

The popular Ag Art Wear Competition is back for its 16th year, with designers battling it out for the best garment from materials found on the farm or land.

Mental health will be a central focus this year with many guest speakers and activities over the three days.

Jason McCartney will be attending the Elmore Field Days as this year’s guest speaker.

Mr McCartney became a national hero in the wake of the Bali Bombings in 2002.

A young Australian with an exceptional talent for Australian Rules football, he was quickly placed into the hearts and minds of all through his courageous fight-back from the horrible burns he suffered in Bali.

This year there will be an Equestrian Showcase encompassing demonstrations as well as many exhibitors within the equine industry.

The shearing shed will be packed full of demonstrations as well as guest speakers.

There is more to see and do this year inside the General

Interest Pavilion, hosting many new exhibitors.

The Agribusiness Pavilion will be packed, hosting more than 100 exhibitors.

Camel Milk Victoria will be returning again after being such a hit last year with their soap, body butters and laundry detergents.

For those who love photography there will be a photography competition with many prizes on offer and the opportunity to have photos placed in the 2017 Elmore Field Days calendar.

Country life inspires young performer’s passion for music WHEN she’s not studying at Melbourne University for a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Laura Byrne is taking part in her passion of performing country/folk music and is part of this year’s Elmore Field Days live entertainment line-up.

At just 18 years of age, Laura is a CMAA Academy Of Country Music graduate and has already released a self-titled debut EP. The EP features co-writes with some of Australian country music’s finest including Alan Caswell, Drew McAlister and Brianna Lee, while the music was bought to life by producer Simon Johnson and his team of musicians Vaughan Jones, Glen Hannah, Pete Drummond and Dave Ristrim.

Music has been a part of family life for Laura who grew up singing with her cousins and grandparents.

Spending her childhood on the family farm in northern Victoria has given Laura a passion for all things country which can be heard through her songs.

Laura spent her childhood in and out of hospital with serve allergies including eczema, asthma and ear infections.

These infections lead to hearing complications, which caused her to be deaf and created speech problems.

After two operations Laura’s hearing improved and is now free from difficulties most of the time.

This is where singing lessons helped Laura to boost her confidence and speech as well as her love of music.

Laura’s classical training opened many doors for her including 13 musical theatre productions, four of them in the lead role.

Over the years, Laura has received two Georgie Award nominations from the Goulburn Valley Theatre Awards.

President recognises the commitment to community

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME: Elmore Field Days president Derek Shotton said he is very excited that the organising committee is moving with the times as it embraces more technologically to enhance the popular farming event.

ELMORE and District Machinery Field Days Inc has grown since 1964 to be a leader of agricultural field days across Australia by celebrating and supporting rural industries and communities.

The past year has seen an enormous growth in relationships with our sponsors and strategic partners, coming together to provide economic benefits to our organisation and thus local communities and the region.

This is the result of professionalism and hard work from our dedicated committee, members, event centre staff and volunteers working together to ensure we honour our visitors and exhibitors

in providing a service to the thousands who come to explore, evaluate, dream and maybe even purchase for three days in October.

Behind the scenes our values of encouraging innovation, accepting growth and change and embracing the future all in an exhibition space that encourages both static and comparative comparisons are as strong as ever.

Obviously we are very proud of our past, both as an organisation and an industry, but we are also proud to be moving with the world and embracing technology.

Our organisation is very excited in moving further towards a more

technologically orientated event, with many new concepts already well advanced in the planning for the 2017 Field Days.

Obviously in all communities there is always someone that is doing it harder than others and this is especially prevalent in our farming community.

With this in mind, the committee is very proud to have partnered Narelle Fraser and received sponsorship from Rural Finance in pulling together a feature highlighting mental health called ‘Put up your Hand’.

I encourage you all to pop in and have a look and listen to all the professional speakers that have been assembled.

If you only pick up one

little thing it could be the one thing that might help you help yourself or a loved one in the future.

At the time of writing this report the feeling in the local farming community is the most positive we have seen for many years.

A good old fashioned winter and some mud around (instead of dust) has lifted all our spirits.

Envisage designing custom-made timber furniture that is uniquely individual NOT many people still handcraft or custom build solid timber furniture, which is why Envisage Furniture’s owners and timber craftsmen Chris Willis and Mathew Irwin are kept busy making beautiful pieces for their increasing client base.

The Shepparton-based company has been in business since 2001 and has recently moved locations to accommodate a larger showroom that includes a viewing window for people to see the craftsmen at work.

Also included at their new site is a range of top-quality lounges and recliners from Molmic – a Melbourne-based couch manufacturer and IMG Norway, which is a Norwegian-based company that specialise in “super comfortable” leather recliners and sofas with space saving ideas and functionality.

Chris Willis said that not one of Envisage Furniture’s pieces is the same, offering a unique sense of individuality to all of their clients.

“We apply the best glues and finishes along with the best jointing practices to produce a product that will become the

antiques of the future,” he said.

“We involve our clients when we can.

“They can supply timber they may have milled, even timbers from their past like old house frames or farm sheds, or they can simply pick out their own timbers from our supplies.

“We can design the piece with our client or they can bring in their own designs,” Mr Willis added.

The company stocks and specialises in Redgum, Ash, Blackwood, Jarrah, Reclaimed Hardwood and American Oak and can also source other timbers on request, with the craftsmen having already used more than 60 varieties of timber.

Envisage Furniture will be attending this year’s Elmore Field Days with a collection of their finest work and can be found at site 1025.

“Our pieces travel all over Victoria, with some being sent interstate and a few have even gone international,” Mr Willis said.

RECHARGE program offers longer battery life, maximum performance ACCORDING to Gerard Anselmi of RECHARGE Battery Revitaliser & Conditioner sulphation buildup on lead acid batteries is very easy to treat in order to prevent premature battery failure.

Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphation build-up on internal lead plates, however, Mr Anselmi has a simple solution to the problem with his RECHARGE battery conditioning programme.

“We have been saying for years that farmers are getting eight to 10 years in our battery conditioning program,” he said.

“However, most shows we do these days we meet people using our RECHARGE battery conditioning program with 12 and 14 year old batteries often still going.

“In fact, our record is now 18 years old and still starting his tractor and after 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia, I think we may do better yet.”

A RECHARGE treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons.

Sealed batteries can also be treated by simply drilling into each cell treating and resealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.

RECHARGE is also great for deep cycle batteries like forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.

“We are chemically reversing the sulphation build-up process, one chemical reaction to counter another,” Mr Anselmi explained.

“Once treated, a battery

is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition and prevention is the key.

“Treat them early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged.”

Mr Anselmi and his partner, Debbie will be at this year’s Elmore Field Days on site 232.

“The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.20 per car battery or $8.50 to treat an N-70.

“A more cost-effective two litre commercial pack is also available and can also be purchased online or on Ebay.

“As RECHARGE is acid based, it is dangerous goods and expensive to freight, so getting it at the field days is by far the cheapest option,” Mr Anselmi added.

WHETHER you are farming, contracting or clearing the back yard, a specialised cutting attachment for your brushcutter has been designed to eliminate the frustration of using nylon cord and conventional steel blades.

David Thorne has developed and manufactured the Weedwakka, designed for heavy vegetation such as blackberry and said the attachment’s hardened steel blades will cut anything from grass to thumb thickness woody weeds without ever needing sharpening.

“If the blades strike a rock they are able to deflect, greatly reducing the kick back, and minimising stress on the brushcutter,” he said.

“This makes the Weedwakka Heavy Duty ideal for clearing scrub in rocky country.”

There are two models of Weedwakka – the Weedwakka Heavy Duty and the Weedwakka MultiCut. The Weedwakka MultiCut has flexible nylon blades that cut cleanly through much heavier vegetation than nylon cord will handle.

The blades are clearly visible when rotating, and can be used around trees without damaging the bark.

The MultiCut is ideal for cutting along paths, walls and netting fences, as it eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord.

When the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools.

Both Weedwakka models are designed for straight shaft brushcutters, and are easily attached in exactly the same way as a conventional steel blade.

The Weedwakka complies with Australian Standard AS3575-1995 and meets Work Cover requirements.

Rex 600 bulk firewood processor in action at this year’s Elmore Field Days

THINKING about producing firewood for a profit?

Whitlands Engineering will be demonstrating the Rex 600 firewood processor at this year’s Elmore Field Days.

According to Whitlands Engineering chief executive officer and head designer David Burder, this machine has single handedly revolutionised the fire-for-profit industry, injecting huge efficiencies into firewood production by cutting labour input.

“Whitlands Engineering is one of the last remaining local wood splitter manufacturers, eschewing imported goods in favour of local jobs, strict quality control and the pride that comes with being Australian owned and made,” he said.

The Whitlands Engineering story started more than 20 years ago when Mr Burder designed and built the first vertical hydraulic log splitter on the market the now iconic Superaxe.

Mr Burder said the Rex 600 is probably the most revolutionary machine his company has built, its production potential is massive, and is the perfect solution to splitting firewood for business.

“The combination of mobility, affordability and production efficiency means that the Rex 600 has already carved out a market for itself, notching up record sales in the past two years,” he added.

The Rex 600 essentially is a smaller version of the hugely successful Rex 900 firewood processor.

The Rex 600 utilises the multi head blade system mounted on a fully towable unit, which folds up to the size of a small trailer.

This system is incredibly efficient, and can produce between eight and 12 cubic metres of split firewood per hour with two people operating the machine.

“The Rex 600 utilises a Kohler 40hp diesel engine, which developed up to 28 tons of power at the base of the blade easily splitting the toughest Australian hardwood with ease,” Mr Burder explained.

“Then factor in a powerful block lifter and roller bench, a four metre out-feed elevator for stockpiling and a safe and easy to use control system and what you’ve got is the perfect solution to splitting firewood for profit.”

All machines are designed and built in North East Victoria distributing throughout Australia and New Zealand and employing a workforce of 22 people.

Dairy production specialist asks who’s in charge of silage IN my consultancy work, I’ve criticised silage for a variety of reasons, invariably, someone or something is to blame, be it contractors, workers or whoever/whatever.

Many farms invest $100,000 or more into silage and abdicate all responsibility for its quality, which is astounding.

I doubt there is any other investment/cost of this magnitude we simply hand to someone else or chance; be it by design or by default.

There are a number of critical control points that well managed, can produce quality silage capable of good conversion to milk dollars from both the nutrient perspective and reduced wastage: wastage being the highest cost to silage.

These management points can be controlled irrespective of whether we do the silage ourselves, use contractors or employees.

Moisture content Checking moisture is paramount to good fermentation.

Sixty-five per cent moisture is a very well researched optimum for pasture silage (in the low 30s for maize when processed through a chopper).

By JOHN LYNE Dairytech dairy production specialist The real need here is to understand just how quickly cut pasture can dry.

I suggest taking a sample straight out of the mower, drying it in a microwave oven to establish its moisture content.

Repeat this each hour by taking another sample from the same windrow.

Once we’ve grasped how quickly grass can dry, we are then well placed to schedule baling/ensiling.

Sugar content When cut pasture is exposed to sunlight it will increase in sugars through photosynthesis.

Sunlight will cause plant water to combine with atmospheric carbon dioxide to form sugars and release oxygen to the atmosphere – hence cut pasture moisture drops quite rapidly in sunlight.

The reverse of this happens overnight – reduced sugars and increased moisture.

Furthermore, tedding two hours after the mower will expose more leaf to sunlight drying it faster and increasing energy (sugars).

Leaving silage in windrows, as all mowers do, is not drying, but windrow composting.

Inside a windrow it will be 100 per cent humidity; no hope of drying.

While sitting in windrows it will be burning off highly digestible sugars and starches that should have been converted to milk.

Last spring I wrote an article entitled ‘Silage in a Day’ that drew criticism, however, try the above and see if you can get cut pasture down to 65 per cent moisture within a day.

I assure you it can be done, and is done, producing high energy, very palatable silage reducing wastage and converting profitably to milk dollars.

Compaction Air or oxygen is the greatest enemy of silage.

Exclusion of oxygen is critical to rapid fermentation and stable pH. In the case of balers, running the belt pressure in the red will ensure very dense bales.

Add to this chopping, and the presence of oxygen in a bale at baling will be greatly reduced.

Both my sons and a number of clients practice both these things and produce extremely high-quality silage with no shrinkage (a sign of ongoing fermentation/unstable pH).

Exclusion of oxygen will also minimise growth of moulds and yeasts (a cause of heating in silage or hay reducing energy and denaturing protein).

Sealing silage On a warm day, bales need to be wrapped within two hours of baling; in cooler weather, no more than four hours.

However, as above, due to being able to make silage in a day, choosing a warm sunny day (increasing sugars and rapid drying) to make silage is good management.

Shifting bales to a storage area as soon as possible after baling will reduce plastic movement allowing oxygen back into the bale.

Cutting height The advent of disc mowers has a corresponding and adverse effect of increasing ash (dirt) in silage. Feed testing

laboratories can verify this.

An increase from nine per cent ash to 11 per cent ash content can reduce milk production by one litre.

Ash or dirt has negative impacts on rumen digestive bacteria, as well as the risk of introducing harmful bacteria such as clostridia.

Skids are available from machinery dealers to raise the height of the cutter bar.

Research has shown for optimum quality (digestibility), lowest ash content and most rapid regrowth, grass should have a cut height of 10 cm.

A secondary benefit of raised cutting height is rapid regrowth.

A paddock should still be green after cutting.

This indicates the plant has not been defoliated and still has leaf left to capture energy from sunlight for rapid regrowth.

A white paddock indicates total defoliation of the plants and requires energy to be drawn from the root system to grow one leaf.

This leaf then takes in energy from sunlight, restores what was borrowed from the root system, then begins growing

more leaf – a very slow process.

In uneven or pugged paddocks, disc mowers can ‘scalp’ ryegrass plants killing them and reducing plant density.

Adjusting cutter bar height leaving 10 cm of stubble will also reduce ash inclusion from tedding and raking.

None of these management issues creates more physical work; mental, certainly, but unless we improve our productivity in both increased dry matter harvest/ha/year and increase digestibility (conversion of forage dollars to milk dollars), we face further low milk prices from more competitive milk producing nations (USA especially).

My greatest fear for our industry is shrinkage to a domestic supply-only industry.

Although this may sound attractive in terms of milk price, it leaves us extremely vulnerable to cheaper imports and total annihilation of our dairy industry, as other local food producers have found.

Our government has only one concern in this regard: cheap food for metropolitan Australia with no concern for where it comes from.

New export fodder charge now under way THE Federal Goverment has approved the new fodder export charge which took effect on July 1.

A levy of 50 cents per tonne has been introduced on all exported fodder.

Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation’s (RIRDC) Peter Phillipzen said the introduction of a R&D levy for export hay with contributions from

government would help maintain and strengthen the viability of the Australian export hay industry.

A committee of exporters has been formed to give direction to RIRDC on how best to invest the funds for the export sector, and currently a five-year research development and extension plan is being drafted for the Export Hay Levy program.

According to Hamish Munro from Granular Products graziers looking to maximise pasture productivity that have invasive grasses like Serrated Tussock could experience varying levels of pasture impairment and may not be able to take full advantage of this spring’s potential.

Demand remains strong for good quality hay A LEADING Australian feed trader has debunked claims that the hay market is in decline.

Feed Central managing director Tim Ford said demand for hay remains strong and good quality product will continue to fetch good prices. “ E v e r y o n e ’s t a l k i n g about there being a big hay crop and talking the market down, but right now there is strong demand for hay and shortage of quality product,” he said.

“We’re now in the market

looking for product to meet that demand.”

Mr Ford said last year’s drought, low stockpiles in hay sheds, difficulties in accessing some supplies due to wet weather, and strong demand from the beef sector and exports had combined to keep the market strong.

“Some are talking the market down but we have an alternative view – right now there is a shortage and we have buyers,” Mr Ford said.

“There has been strong demand all winter and we

need product now.”

Mr Ford said the cold and wet winter across Australia had been good for trade but could lead to access and quality problems.

“It has been a good growing season but there have been problems with cattle getting on the paddocks and bogging paddocks, which leads to strong demand for hay.

“Every hayshed in the country is empty and there’s no carry-over of stock, but customers still want product.”

Mr Ford said many growers

had been unable to apply fertiliser due to the wet weather and waterlogging could also affect future yields, however, demand remains strong.

“The beef market is very strong with an increased demand for hay and at some point the dairy industry will recover,” he said.

He added that predictions of lower prices reflected an uneducated view of the market.

“I think the price will come back in the new season.

“The fundamental requirements for new-season

product remain the same; easy all-weather access to a good quality product with minimal weather damage in a heavy large square bale and shedded over multiple months.”

Mr Ford said there was a risk of a lot of poor quality hay because of the wet conditions but good growers would get good returns.

“The professional grower who makes good quality hay should and will be rewarded for their efforts and get very good returns,” he said.

The export market remains

strong and the significant price setter, particularly in Victoria.

Ballarat Ram Sale proves to be a success for Coryule Merino Stud

By DAVID RIZZOLI BUYERS from NSW, Tasmania and the major sheep regions of Victoria descended upon the recent Ballarat Merino Ram Sale with the top price ram selling for $7000.

Six Victorian Merino studs and four New South Wales Merino studs offered rams for auction at the highly successful sale that had a clearance of 94 per cent, with an average selling price of $2069.12.

The top price was secured by the Coryule Merino Stud of R and P Sloan at Willowvale, South of Ballarat, with Craig Trickey as manager and purchased by agents Roberts and Co. for Damien Meburn of Tasmania.

Second top price of $5250 was for a ram from the renowned Meryville Merino Stud of Wal and George Merriman at Boorowa, NSW and purchased by another NSW stud, Demondrille Merinos

of Paddy and Charlie Davis, Fairview, Harden.

Third top price was for a ram from another leading Merino stud, that of the Walton family’s Wurrook Stud at Rokewood, south of Ballarat, purchased by K.J. Remilton for $3500 through Elders, Ballarat.

It was the regular buyers who snapped up many of the rams including the Warratah Pastoral Co. who purchased five rams for $10,000 with a top of $3000, D and M Elsom from Hamilton, through Landmark who purchased four rams for $8250, Glenisla Trust (R and C Barber) purchased three Demondrille rams for $4500 and R and B McErvale from Ballarat, through Elders, took home three rams for $3160.

Coryule Merino Stud took out first and second place in the judging of the sale rams, with Rod and Sue Miller from Glenpaen at Brimpaen in Victoria taking out third.

STRUCTURAL SOUNDNESS: Changes to Derrynock Poll Dorset Stud’s breeding program are a direct result from the feedback stud principal Simon Beattie receives from his clients.

Derrynock adapts to its clients’ needs and a changing industry IN recent years, Derrynock Poll Dorset stud principal Simon Beattie has focused on producing a line of meat maternal rams, with particular focus on carcase, fertility, milk and ease of management.

Mr Beattie said he was quick to embrace the technology for scanning for eye muscle, fat and recording weights as he strives to breed the best Poll Dorset rams possible – something he has been doing for the past 40 years.

“Most changes in our breeding program are a direct result from the feedback we receive from our clients, from progeny testing programs we complete each year in our own commercial flock, and through the adoption of new breeding technologies,” he said.

Despite the stud’s sale rams averaging almost 30 per cent above the LambPlan carcase

+ average for all Poll Dorsets in Australia, it is not the East Trentham-based stud’s only focus.

Structural soundness and fertility have been key criteria over the years, with the stud ewes now averaging 165 per cent to 170 per cent lambing each year, and the maternal ewes scanning 190 per cent on average over the past two years.

“In the meat maternal flock our breeding objective is primarily focused on ewe efficiency, with the aim of each ewe weaning her body weight in lamb at weaning,” Mr Beattie said.

“This is reliant on a medium frame ewe selected for early maturity, fertility and particular emphasis on milking ability – often the forgotten factor.

“This has resulted in the top 10 per cent of the commercial meat maternal ewes with a mature

body weight of 60 kg to 65 kg, rearing 80kg to 90kg of lamb at 14 weeks,” he added.

In more recent times, the stud’s focus has also been on worm resistance, loin length, gestation length and lambing ease breeding values, along with DNA testing for intramuscular fat (marbling), shear force (tenderness) and lean meat yield.

“As pressure increases on stocking rates and extreme growth genetics, a focus on rams exhibiting moderate birth weights and shorter gestation with a good resistance to worms and eating quality has helped us service the needs of a changing prime lamb industry,” Mr Beattie said.

$6 million delivered to farmers for quad bike safety rebate scheme WORKSAFE Victoria and the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) have teamed up to deliver $6 million in a quad bike safety rebate scheme.

The scheme is expected to deliver rebates to more than 5000 farmers over the next two years.

Under the scheme rebates will be available on purchases made on and after September

1, with farmers able to lodge applications to claim the rebate from October 1.

The rebates will be available for two years from October 1, or until the funds are exhausted, with rebates allocated on a first-in first-served basis to eligible applicants with complete applications.

VFF vice president Brett Hosking said farmers

should get in early and take the opportunity to protect their families, workers and themselves from the risks of using quad bikes.

“It’s an undeniable fact that quad bikes are one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment on our farms, and we should all be doing what we can to make them safer or replace them with another vehicle,” he said.

“Rebates of up to $600 can be claimed on the two eligible OPDs - the Quadbar and the ATV Lifeguard - as well as a $1200 rebate on alternate vehicles.”

Mr Hosking said the rebate had been restricted to two types of OPD, as they had been designed and manufactured in accordance with approved engineering standards and independently

tested to be eligible for the rebate.

“While many farmers are pretty damned good welders, I’m sorry to say you can’t just bend a bit of bar, bolt it on the bike and claim a $600 rebate,” Mr Hosking added.

“I’m sure that as time goes on other OPD manufacturers might come along, but for now it’s just the Quadbar and ATV Lifeguard.

“There’s obviously a bit of cross-over here, but we’re not going to be handing out rebates on vehicles that are designed for sport, not farming.

“And you can’t claim the rebate on purchasing secondhand vehicles,” he said.

Case IH tour takes on the weather to enlighten regional customers CHALLENGING weather conditions didn’t dampen the spirits of about 600 Case IH customers who attended the recent Case IH Red Excellence Tour event in Horsham.

The tour was a unique opportunity for regional customers to meet global product experts face to face and gain hands on experience driving machinery in the field.

Held over three weeks, Case IH specialists from Australia, North America and New Zealand presented 17 of the latest product models, from the Farmall, Puma and Maxxum range of tractors, to the Steiger Quadtrac ‘Machine of the Year 2014’ and the ‘2015 Tractor of the Year’ Magnum Rowtrac.

A range of hay, tillage and harvesting gear was also on show, including the Axial-Flow

combine harvester and the new Ecolo-Tiger 875 disk ripper, due for release in Australia later this year Case IH marketing manager – Australia New Zealand Pete McCann said the open days were a great success, with customers leaving excited and informed about the current and up-and-coming products.

“This is the second year we’ve undertaken a travelling roadshow of Case IH products, and while it’s a bit of a logistical challenge, it’s a great opportunity to talk to our customers about their needs for the future,” he said.

“We’re constantly looking at how we can add value to our customers’ farming practice and lowering the cost of ownership.

“Our Advanced Farming

Systems team were on hand to talk customers through the range of automated guidance, section and rate control tools, software and display options available across the Case IH suite of tractors, harvesting and spraying equipment.

“It’s interesting to hear about what’s important to our customers in their businesses, so we can work together to give them the products they need.

“And nothing beats being able to touch and test the new machines and see the technology firsthand,” Mr McCann added.
